Business Description

Here at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, we are proud of our yachting heritage and the success of our sailors at Club, State, National and International level. We are equally as proud of the hundreds of young sailors who pass through our training programmes each year and of the sailors who take part in a regatta for the first time.

We’re also proud of our work with school and the community, making sailing and boating experiences available to those who would otherwise find the participation hurdle just too high.

Members of this Club come from all walks of life, united by a passion for being afloat and enjoying friendships that, in many cases, endure for a lifetime. So whether you have ambitions to be a Club sailor or a world beater, you won’t find a better club than Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club to call home.

RFBYC's second Rolex New York Yacht Club

This year will be RFBYC's second Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, following their first IC in 2013.

In 1896, a group involving distinguished Australian colonist, Edward Keane, and Collector of Customs, Aubrey Sherwood, formed a sailing club and built a jetty for their boats in Freshwater Bay, Peppermint Grove, Perth, Western Australia. Following two world wars, countless regattas, world, national, state and local club championships, Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club continues to thrive and bring together Club members and their families at this same picturesque location on the banks of the Swan River. RFBYC is recognized internationally as one of an elite group of yacht clubs and is proud to be a founding member of the International Council of Yacht Clubs.

RFBYC Team Profile

Team profile.

royal freshwater bay yacht club inc

The RFBYC team for this year's Rolex NYYC Invitational Cup was chosen from experienced sailors, mostly in the Etchells fleet and from the Club's youth academy. In preparation for the Invitational Cup, the team has been racing and training on a regular basis and plans to arrive in Newport early for an intense coaching program.

Leading RFBYC as their skipper in this year's Invitational Cup is Peter Ahern (left). Hailing from Perth, Western Australia, Ahern's credentials include Commodore of RFBYC from 2010 to 2012 and Director of the International Council of Yacht Clubs. Alongside his deep involvement in the yacht club world, Ahern's 50 years of racing has allowed him to achieve great success at the highest level of sailing as both a skipper and a tactician. He has excelled in some of the world's most prestigious sailing events, winning both the IRC WA State Championships and the Kings Cup Thailand as a skipper, and claiming first place in the Australian Etchells Championship as a tactician. He is also recognized as the Asian Yachting Grand Prix Champion.

Accompanying Ahern will be RFBYC's

Accompanying Ahern will be RFBYC's tactician and another Perth native, Dirk Van Der Struyf (right). With over 35 years of racing and a diverse array of sailing experiences to his name, Van Der Struyf will be a great asset to RFBYC's team in the Invitational Cup. As a trimmer, he is a two time winner of the Australian Match Racing Championships, an eight time competitor in the Australia Cup Match Racing Championships, a King’s Cup Thailand winner and at the helm, he placed first at the Etchells Australian Championships Corinthian Division and third at the Etchells Worlds Corinthian Division. His accomplishments in these world-renowned sailing competitions and considerable One-Design experience will complement the RFBYC team both on and off the water.

Growth, Capital Projects and Thriving in COVID at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club

Susan Parker

Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club

April 14, 2022

royal freshwater bay yacht club inc

One of the advantages of being one of the most isolated cities in the world is that isolation in these times of COVID has not been difficult. As such, we have led relatively normal lives over the last two years, excluding the inability to travel or to receive visitors.

Indeed, Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club (RFBYC) has flourished over the past 24 months. There has been substantial growth in membership numbers and strong participation in all Club events, on and off water in sail, power, rowing, and even socialising, despite COVID restrictions. Membership is at a seven-year high with encouraging statistics in age, gender and interests. High-level competitive aspects of sailing, such as international and national championship events have, of course, been curtailed, and yet, local and Club participation has been excellent.

Apart from COVID, the last year can be summarized as: “Build, Build, Build.”

The combined efforts of the Club’s Long-Term Planning Committee, General Committee and Capital Works Committee established projects and initiated rapid development that will set the Club up for safe and efficient operations for many decades.

The Club completed works on a new Start Box as well as major works on some of the marina jetties. Achieved on-time and on-budget, the final result provides robust pens for yachts and power boats in an exposed area of the marina, as well as a safe and functional working environment for our volunteer start teams. Reconstruction of the jetties required significant boat movements and the members affected showed great understanding during this time. With overseas travel restricted, increased boat ownership has seen strong demand for pens. The marina has had a strong year financially, but future maintenance is under review to ensure we can continue to offer a safe and functional marina.

The Club’s excellent Discover Sailing Training Centre received national recognition. Our members showed amazing support for the fundraising campaign established to finance the new Dinghy and Training Centre building project. The new Dinghy and Training Centre building and surrounds was completed over the two-year period. The contract, plus professional services and contingency amounted to an expected outlay of approximately $3.2 million. Construction was completed in time for most of the 2021/22 summer sailing season. The facility provides for dinghy storage, coach and administration offices, conference rooms, catering facilities and change rooms. It is a substantial improvement on the 30-year-old ‘games room’ previously used for all these purposes.

Another major project completed in time for the current sailing season has been the rebuilding of a substantial part of the hard-standing, boatlifting and wharf area. Immediately after Closing Day April 2021, works commenced with demolition and removal of the existing structure. The rebuild, over water, abutting soft limestone cliffs, and incorporating two lifting cranes was finished in time for the 21/22 summer season Opening Day in October 2021.

With several major capital projects completed, the Club is now focussed on setting a new program to plan for future needs of Club facilities.
