Interview by sarah drane – december 2014.
I wanted to be back at the coal face of crew recruitment, to be the one doing the interviews and placing the crew, giving clients my full attention. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed training people and improving a business, but I much prefer crew placement. It’s far more challenging and I get a kick out of it.
In short - no. EL CREW CO was created to be personal and boutique. I enjoy getting to know my clients and crew and, the more people I employ, the more the brand is diluted. As a rule clients hate being passed around different personnel in a big office, staff who don’t necessarily know them or indeed their yacht’s needs. My regulars can drop me a message saying “Erica, need a deckhand to join us in Tahiti on the 15th, John’s broken his ankle!” safe in the knowledge that I know them well enough to send them the right person. Recruitment is all about relationships - I don’t want to be the biggest, I’d rather be the best.
In addition to my sparkling personality (coughs), I’m also quite smart. I have plenty of informed opinions, particularly on subjects I’m passionate about, such as yachting. And shoes. But mostly yachting. People come to me for advice on industry hot topics and ask for my views, I am proud of this. I love a good discussion and I know my subject matter very well. Having an engineering background (true story) gives me confidence, while my previous career as a project manager directing teams allows me to empathise with senior crew. And of course, I’ve worked on boats, starting at the bottom of the food chain. A few years back, during a career break, I was also the smallest and only female shark feeder in the Bahamas, this tends to earn respect and a few “ooohs”.
What’s that? Work life what now?! As anyone running a small business will testify, it’s a tricky balance.
When I am busy I work every hour around the clock; however, when I set up EL CREW CO, I intentionally focussed on long-term crew placements, only doing the odd short-term position for regular clients, and this means I have quiet times. When all the yachts are out mid season, in August and January for example, I can set up an ‘out of office’ and get as far away from my desk as possible to tick off a ‘bucket list’ item or two. But truthfully I can’t switch off (I’d welcome tips and advice on that actually) and always travel with a mobile office so I’m available for emergency client requests. The only time in the past two years I’ve disconnected from the internet was when I was at sea and I honestly thought I’d had a limb removed.
Isn’t imitation the biggest form of flattery? I’m happy that, although ‘only’ a boutique agency, my ideas are influencing the marketing departments of bigger companies across the industry. As a little fish in a big sea, I can make one hell of a good ripple.
Incredibly! It’s how everyone communicates for a start, with the added bonus that if I’m having ‘one of those days’ I can flick through Facebook and laugh at someone’s Friday night antics. Social media is an excellent platform to reach a huge amount of people in a very short space of time (instantly in fact) as well as being a great source of information. The trick is to keep it entertaining and light. One of my clients summed it up beautifully - “Facebook is for those jokes you tell down the pub, when you’re not at the pub. Serious stuff is for websites.” I try to keep the EL CREW CO page positive, funny, motivational, informative and personal. There are lots of crew out there whom I’ve not yet met in person, but many feel they already know me a little bit - I have Facebook to thank for that.
Yachting is a very successful and wealthy industry, as such it’s attracted a lot of people looking to exploit and extort both crew and yacht owners. This really grinds my gears, but sadly there are always people who pick on the vulnerable. It’s also not very conducive to happy relationships, I see a lot of break ups. I can’t actually think of a third one…
Bad grammar and spelling – basically when it looks like they’ve put a CV together in five minutes. Your CV is your first impression and, if it looks like a fag-packet sketch, it will create an instant and lasting impression of the wrong kind. Like the closet geek I am, I studied CV psychology across the board and spoke to various captains to create what I perceive to be the best CV guide currently out there (Yes, I actually just said that). This guide is available on the ‘Community’ page of my website and really easy to follow - it’s got a pretty good success rate too.
Second, lateness to appointments. If you have a meeting set up, unless you get struck by lightning, then be on time. No, actually, be five minutes early.
And lastly, Crocs and/or white sunglasses. Just, no. Never. And leave the skateboard at home.
Enthusiasm, smartness, qualifications, eagerness, confidence, a great sense of humour. I know that’s more than three, but the positives outweigh the negatives. I also like to see new crew who’ve done their research. There’s no excuse not to have read up on yachting before coming to seek work, there are so many resources out there. Meanwhile I love to see experienced crew who are serious about their careers and keen to find the right yacht for them. Ambition, passion and drive. These are the crew members I am proud to place.
In Palma, I love how the industry is so tight. Overall I see lots of crew helping each other out to find jobs or day work, decent accommodation, social hangouts and so on. Other yachtie hubs aren’t so warm, Palma is a great base. It’s also a great opportunity to travel and see the world. Yes, you’ll be working for most of that time, but with the great wages on offer and the complete inability to spend them whilst you’re working, think of the holidays… It’s glamorous, unique, and constantly developing. I can’t bear standing still so working in an evolving industry like this suits me down to the ground.
While we already discussed imitation being the greatest form of flattery, I’d at least rather get a head start on my grand plans before I publicly reveal. So you’ll have to wait and see.

Will Bruton on overseas gardiennage, otherwise known as handing over responsibility to others for marine servicing including maintenance.
Pass any marina in the Balearics, and you’ll see yachts with a notice on the guardrail detailing who is responsible for their—usually highly polished—condition. Overseas gardiennage, or handing over responsibility to someone else, is commonplace in the Mediterranean. From a washdown once a month, to a recorded maintenance schedule that looks great when the yacht is sold on, it’s something that’s becoming increasingly popular.
Rory Gillard of Minerva Technical Palma and Pete Stirling of PSA Prime Marine UK are both ex- Clipper Round the World skippers who now run overseas gardiennage businesses as part of their wider marine service operations. Collectively they have hundreds of thousands of miles’ experience and a wealth of yacht maintenance knowledge.

“Gardiennage [or guardiennage] is a French word meaning to protect or take care of, and it does hint at the level of responsibility involved,” explains Gillard. “As an industry it has grown as owners have less time to look after their yachts and as they look for them to be in top working order when turn up to sail. Yachts have also got far more complicated.
“In Palma many of the yachts you see in the marina will be owned by sailors who live abroad and come to the island specifically to sail. Over time, more trust has been placed in businesses like ours to make that work and make it as easy as possible.”
When owners entrust their yacht to gardiennage they are also ensuring someone is close by when things don’t go right. When a storm hit Mallorca last summer, companies like Gillard’s found themselves looking after yachts in their care with a forecast of over 45 knots due to hit the island. “In bad weather we check boats morning and night: lines, fenders, watertight integrity, bilges, batteries. If necessary moving to an alternative berth beforehand to reduce the chance of any damage occurring,” he explains.

Most businesses offer standardised packages, from a basic washdown once a month to much more. Pete and Su Stirling’s PSA Prime Marine has launched a service they have called Prime Maintenance, which gives owners different levels of service with pricing based upon the length of boat. “We launched it this way to make pricing clear and set out our way of going about delivering for clients; it’s important customers know exactly what we are doing for the money. We can do as much or as little for owners as they ask, but they benefit from being able to turn up to their boat and go, knowing that it’s in great working order. We can even provision in advance.
“A recent client came to us with a 12-month-old Jeanneau , so the boat is in good order and they want to keep it that way. We now provide both gardiennage and ongoing maintenance services, such as the annual engine service.”
Regularly running up systems helps keep them working properly. Photo: Rory Gillard
Gillard explains, “Most of the yachts we have under gardiennage are 12m to 15m, above that size we offer more comprehensive management. It is important to understand that gardiennage is not the same as employing a full-time captain; occasionally customers do make that mistake.
“We go above and beyond for our clients and often find ourselves helping on the phone when they are out enjoying their yacht and something isn’t working, but we can’t provide the same level of service as a full time captain would.”
For larger yachts, with more complex systems, gardiennage companies will often build the manufacturers’ service schedule into an agreed plan. “Seacocks need to be worked regularly on all yachts, but for those with systems like air conditioning, a watermaker or genset, regularly running up systems is really important,” Gillard says.

Bluewater cruising can be a transformative journey, filled with remarkable moments and unforgettable adventures. But challenges come hand in hand…
Andrew Allner has been using gardiennage services for over 15 years, keeping a Swan 53 in the South of France. More recently he has engaged PSA Prime Marine to look after a Swan 38 he is purchasing in the UK.
“Here in St Tropez some form of gardiennage is mandatory, which is sensible. When the Mistral blows in the winter you need someone looking after the boat – as a bare minimum, checking the fenders and lines.”

Finding the right people, or person, Allner explains, is crucial. “Over the years we have had mixed experiences, but it has certainly become more professionalised as an industry. It is key to have one point of central contact. As you build trust, they are the link between you and your boat, but also the connection to their contacts and trades in the area.
“They need to know how to sail and to be a conscientious character; Pete is exactly that, he can deal with people and has high standards. We race the Swan and you are placing a lot of trust in people to oversee or undertake work to a high standard because you can’t see it being done yourself.
“When we switch from cruising to racing mode, we leave it to the gardiennage company to change the sails, take excess kit off and get her ready, meaning we can just turn up and enjoy a 600-mile offshore race with little time wasted.”
Checking lazarettes and under the sole boards for water is part of most basic packages. Photo: Rory Gillard
Jonathan Beeston and his family have had their Oyster 62 in gardiennage in Palma since she was commissioned. “We worked for a long time with a one-man operation. He was great but he retired and we have since had mixed experiences with a couple of larger companies.
“You need someone who has attention to detail and communicates well. If you’re a thousand miles away they are your eyes on the boat so they need to keep tabs on more long-term maintenance things that you might need to do as well as what’s on the list you have agreed.
Gardiennage companies often provide maintenance and engineering services. Photo: Will Bruton
“We have turned up before to find things not working – like the fridge, which is important when you’re about to go sailing in the Med for two weeks. A good operation will be checking diligently and running systems, then thinking beyond that. Does the capping rail need revarnishing this year? What condition are the halyards in?
“Our Oyster 62 is now an older boat, so pre-empting things that might need taking care of becomes even more important and, as trust grows, you are more likely to let them take care of them.”
Passing over responsibility for your yacht to someone else demands a high degree of trust.
Rory Gillard (Minerva Technical minervatechnical.co.uk) explains what you should look for in a gardiennage company:
■ Ask for some references from current clients. Companies come and go. ■ Reputation is everything. Check it out. ■ Expect a clear pricing structure that covers what will be undertaken and when. ■ Ask which services will be undertaken in-house and which will be subcontracted. ■ An established gardiennage business will have good connections to local trades, but it’s important to be clear who is doing what, particularly if the company becomes involved in overseeing any work on board.
■ PSA Prime Marine (psaprimemarine.com) offers gardiennage from £5.95 per foot, which includes: ■ Check and adjustment of mooring lines and fenders. ■ Open hatches to air the vessel. ■ Check battery charging and shore power status. ■ Check bilges and run bilge pumps. ■ Run generator and engine(s), including in and out of gear. ■ Operate steering and trim tab systems. ■ Flush toilets and run freshwater systems to prevent them from smelling. ■ Work seacocks to stop them seizing. ■ Wash down deck/hull and chamois windows, hatches and brightwork. ■ Additional checks of mooring lines and fenders when bad weather is forecast. ■ After every inspection a report is sent to the owner along with photos and videos detailing any areas of concern.

Twenty-two people were on board the Bayesian superyacht including British technology tycoon Mike Lynch, his wife and 18-year-old daughter, and Morgan Stanley International boss Jonathan Bloomer.
Friday 23 August 2024 12:34, UK
Details have emerged of the 22 people who were on board the superyacht that sank off the coast of Sicily.
The British-flagged vessel named Bayesian was carrying 12 passengers and 10 members of crew when it got into difficulty in the early hours of Monday.
Seven bodies have now been recovered. The other 15 people on board were rescued.
Here's what we know about those who were on the yacht.
Follow latest updates on the superyacht sinking
British technology tycoon Mike Lynch was among the original six people missing. On Thursday, divers confirmed his body had been recovered.
Raised in Ilford, east London by Irish parents, the 59-year-old made millions with the software company Autonomy he set up in 1996.
He had an estimated net worth of £852m, according to the 2023 Sunday Times Rich List, and is believed to have owned the yacht.
Off the back of Automomy's global success, Mr Lynch was given the roles of science adviser to former prime minister David Cameron and non-executive director of the BBC.
The Cambridge maths and sciences graduate sold the firm for £8.64bn to US giant Hewlett Packard (HP) in 2011.
Dubbed the "British Bill Gates", Mr Lynch has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case related to the sale of Autonomy to HP in 2011.
HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American technology firm. Mr Lynch denied any wrongdoing.
In June, a US jury cleared him of all charges .

Hannah Lynch
Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch was also on board. A body believed to be that of the teenager was recovered on Friday from the yacht wreckage.
She had been on holiday with her parents, having secured a place to study English at the University of Oxford, according to reports.
Her former school, Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith, west London, said they were "incredibly shocked by the news that Hannah and her father are among those missing in this tragic accident" when the yacht first sank.
Angela Bacares
Mr Lynch's wife Angela Bacares was on board the yacht and was rescued.
The 57-year-old said she and Mr Lynch were awoken by the boat "tilting" at 4am - half an hour before it sank.
Jonathan Bloomer
Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley International, was confirmed dead on Thursday.
According to the Financial Times, Mr Bloomer appeared as a defence witness for Mr Lynch during his US criminal trial and the pair were good friends. He also chaired Autonomy's audit committee.
The 70-year-old was the chief executive of UK-Hong Kong insurer Prudential until he was ousted by the board in 2005.
He was also chairman of the insurance provider Hiscox.
Judy Bloomer
Mr Bloomer's wife Judy was on the yacht trip with her husband. Divers confirmed they found her body on Thursday.
Mrs Bloomer was a former board member at The Eve Appeal charity, which focuses on gynaecological cancers.
The charity described her as a "brilliant champion for women's health and medical research... an incredible supporter, committee member, and trustee of our charity for over 20 years".

Recaldo Thomas
The yacht's on-board chef Recaldo Thomas died in the sinking.
He was Canadian-Antiguan and part of the crew of the Bayesian.
His body was the first to be recovered from the wreckage.
Chris Morvillo
US lawyer Chris Morvillo was among those divers found dead on Thursday.
The father-of-two worked on Mr Lynch's US fraud trial and was a partner of law firm Clifford Chance's US branch.
Mr Morvillo was assistant attorney for the Southern District of New York between 1995 and 2005 and worked on the terrorist investigation into the 9/11 attacks.
In a recent LinkedIn post, he thanked the legal team that helped win Mr Lynch's trial.
Signing off the post, he said: "And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo.
"None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after…."
Neda Morvillo
Mr Morvillo's wife Neda died in the disaster alongside her husband.
The 57-year-old had a luxury jewellery brand, which she ran under her maiden name Neda Nassiri.

Ayla Ronald
Ayla Ronald, a senior associate at Clifford Chance, survived the yacht disaster, the law firm confirmed.
The 36-year-old worked alongside Chris Morvillo in helping defend Mike Lynch in court.
Clifford Chance said in a statement: "Our utmost priority is providing support to the family as well as our colleague Ayla Ronald, who together with her partner, thankfully survived the incident."
She is originally from Christchurch, New Zealand, but lives in London, her father told local media there.
He said she was left "very shaken" but "she and her partner are alive".
Charlotte Golunski
Charlotte Golunski was on board the yacht and was rescued along with her one-year-old daughter, Sofia.
She spoke to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, confirming she survived the yacht sinking and told how she kept her daughter alive after she was rescued.
"I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning," she said.
"It was all dark. In the water I couldn't keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others."
The 35-year-old is a partner at one of Mr Lynch's firms - Invoke Capital - and has worked there since 2012, according to her LinkedIn profile.
She also worked at Hewlett Packard, which acquired Autonomy in 2011, for 11 months.
Before that, she studied history at the University of Oxford.

Leah Randall
Leah Randall was part of the Bayesian crew and survived the sinking.
She was pictured going ashore in Porticello on Monday morning and is from South Africa.
Her mother Heidi told Sky News said she was "beyond relieved that my daughter's life was spared by the grace of God".
"It doesn't make it any easier living with the heartache of those who have lost their lives [or are] missing. My very deepest condolences to the chef's family as they formed a great friendship," she said.
Katja Chicken
Katja Chicken was another South African member of crew on board the Bayesian and was pictured being brought to safety in Porticello on Monday.
