Blazing Paddles Paddlefest finally takes to Cuyahoga River for 2024 extravaganza

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Kayakers and paddleboarders took to the Cuyahoga River on Sunday for the sixth annual Blazing Paddles Paddlefest.

The skies were clear and the weather forgiving during the annual competitive and recreational event hosted by Share the River, an organization that works to ensure access and safety on the Cuyahoga River.

The event is also a fundraiser to raise money for Share the River and its various programs, including the Paddle the City initiative, which helps provide free kayaking exposure to historically disenfranchised residents.

The event was postponed from June .

Some 350 recreational paddlers and 60 racers from 12 states took part, according to Jim Ridge, the executive director of Share the River.

There were 12.2-, 6.1- and 3.75-mile courses, some turning around where the Cleveland Fire Department’s fire boat pumped water from its water canons, providing relief for the paddlers.

“That kind of tells the story of how a river that once was a pipeline for pollution is now a conduit for tourism, recreation, and physical and mental health,” Ridge said.

Share the River also on Sunday hosted its Paddle Expo, which was sponsored by developers Bedrock. At the expo, attendees could talk with people involved with work on the river like the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Ridge said that all of this helps promote the “social, recreational and economic vibrancy of Cleveland’s waterfront.”

“When people see that sort of contagious enthusiasm for recreating on the Cuyahoga River,” he said, “that changes Cleveland’s narrative, in terms of this river that people used to kick Cleveland and the shins on.”

Shannon Wiant of Akron said that this was her second time competitively kayaking at Blazing Paddles after placing third last year.

“It was a little more windy than last year, but weather’s perfect. People are friendly and was just an overall great experience,” Wiant said.

Dee Boyd of Cleveland has attended the event every year and said that her experience this year was “awesome and the weather was great.”

Boyd is also a board member of Kids That Tri, a nonprofit organization that helps provide resources to help youth participate in triathlons, particularly inner city youth. Boyd has also helped expose these youth to kayaking and paddling.

“We are just trying to get them exposed because the children that we choose, nine times out of 10, would have never been exposed to the sport of triathlon because of lack of resources. We provide them with bikes and all the equipment that they need for it,” she said.

Blazing Paddles also called attention to keeping the river clean.

Trash Fish, a nonprofit that encourages volunteers to pick up trash on the river while providing kayak rentals and equipment, had a table at the event to provide bags for competitors to use to pick up trash.

People that brought back trash, whether it was one or more items, were entered into a raffle to win various prizes.

Eddie Olschansky, the founder of Trash Fish, said he and Ridge have been working over the years on growing a “trash in the river focused portion of Paddle Fest.”

He added that the incentive proved popular among participants.

“I’m going to have to bring more grabbers next year and more bags, I think,” Olschansky said. “Last year really opened up people’s eyes to a lot of the trash problem here because we got a huge influx of rain a couple days before this event and the river was kind of trashed.

People wanted to step up and do something about it. Even the guy who won the race last year came back with his race boat filled with garbage for us. So, the community we have here is amazing.”
