Newport International Boat Show announced today a full slate of activities for visitors to enjoy. Tickets are now on sale for this year’s Newport International Boat Show presented by BankNewport, which will be held September 12-15, 2024, at the Newport Yachting Center Marina in downtown Newport, Rhode Island.

The Newport International Boat Show, one of the country’s largest and most prestigious boat shows, spans over 15 acres with six connecting show sites within historic downtown Newport, Rhode Island. Walk the docks and view a spectacular display of new sailboats and powerboats, some making their first-ever debut in the United States. This year there’s an acre of even more boats to see throughout the show, including a brokerage basin, with both power and sailboats ranging up to 110 feet now on display for the first time. On the land side, visitors will find hundreds of marine products, services and accessories to enhance the boating lifestyle.

Also on deck is the Cruiser’s Classroom, located below deck at the Hammett’s entrance to the Show, it is an educational experience featuring interactive presentations covering an array of marine-related topics such as boating, fishing, safety, boat maintenance, and financing 101. Tech Talks are hands-on technical training classes for boaters of all experience levels led by American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) expert and Boat of the Year judge Ed Sherman; registration in advance is required for this course as seating is limited.

As the kickoff for boat show season, many exhibitors launch new models for the first time in the U.S. at the Show. When walking the show, keep an eye out for the red and blue Newport for New Products (NFNP) Awards Program decals and burgees indicating each boat or product entry. Industry experts will judge each entry on opening day and awards are given in several categories. All winners will be announced Friday, Sept. 13. This year the program is featuring over 40 new product and boat debuts, both power and sail.

New for this year, the Show is offering an exclusive experience with the Windward VIP Lounge. This exciting addition gives guests a private oasis with views of Narragansett Bay and the ocean sounds of an active waterfront. It includes a premium open bar with endless options, gourmet food served all day, private restrooms and a place to relax and lounge, indoors and outdoors, and daily must-see pop-up activations.

The Bohlin Tent, located at the end of Commercial Wharf, in the heart of the Show, is a place to take a pause to enjoy music and a variety of offerings for sale like Dillon’s Small Batch Distillers, Fishers Island Lemonade, Franics Ford Coppola, Newport Craft Brewing, Springline Coffee, Tequila Ocho, Sobieski Vodka, or Via Corota offering craft cocktails. Showgoers can also grab a quick bite at Wally’s Weiners, Castle Hill Inn and Food Love Market offerings, Newport Chowder Company clam chowder, Smoke House burgers and pulled pork sandwiches, and more.

“Expanding on the successful momentum of the past few years, we have added a number of brand-new experiences and activities to delight and entertain our visitors,” said Jocelyn Emory, Marketing Director of Newport International Boat Show. “Every year, we try to build an incredible event for our attendees, and we are proud to debut many of these offerings this year. Superyacht maker's CEO: Bayesian's crew made an 'incredible mistake'

The body of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch was recovered Thursday from his family's superyacht that sank off the coast of Italy after it encountered a sudden and powerful storm, authorities said.

After four bodies were recovered from the wreck Wednesday, Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, remains the only person unaccounted for, Massimo Mariani, of Italy's interior ministry, told Reuters. Her body may have been swept out to sea, Mariani said.

It could take divers more time to find her body because of the difficulties of accessing the sunken ship more than 160 feet down, said Luca Cari, a fire brigade spokesperson. Rescuers faced a challenging task in scouring extremely deep and narrow spaces around the boat.

Giovanni Costantino, the CEO of Italian ship manufacturer Perini, which made the ship in 2008, told Reuters on Thursday, "The boat suffered a series of indescribable, unreasonable errors."

He said the crew made an "incredible mistake" in not preparing for the storm, even though it was announced in a shipping forecast earlier. "This is the mistake that cries out for vengeance," he said.

Lynch, 59, was best known as the co-founder of Britain’s largest enterprise software, Autonomy, which was sold to Hewlett-Packard in 2011. He had invited his friends on the yacht to celebrate his acquittal in June of fraud charges related to the sale of Autonomy.

The Bayesian, a 184-feet-long British-registered sailboat, went down just before sunrise Monday off the coast of Porticello, near Palermo, where it was anchored when a strong storm swept across the area. Of the 22 passengers and crew members on board, 15, including Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, were pulled from the water Monday, and several were hospitalized. Divers then recovered the body of Ricardo Thomas, the yacht's chef, near the ship.

Who were among the missing?

An exhaustive search ensued for six missing people: Lynch and his daughter; Judy and Jonathan Bloomer, a non-executive chair of Morgan Stanley International; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Jonathan Bloomer was a character witness at Lynch’s fraud trial, and Chris Morvillo, an American citizen, was part of the team that represented Lynch.

Hannah, the younger of Lynch's two daughters, was preparing to study English literature at Oxford University, according to the Sunday Times.

Investigation opened into the tragedy

Local prosecutors have opened an investigation into the disaster and will hold a press conference on Saturday.

Costantino said there were no errors in the ship's construction or design. "It went down because it took on water. From where, the investigators will tell," he said.

The ship, owned by Lynch's wife, Bacares, was constructed in accordance with international maritime standards and commercially certified by the U.K.'s Maritime and Coastguard Agency, according to Matthew Schanck, chairman of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council. It was refitted for the second time in 2020.

Experts have pointed to  a waterspout, a tornado over the water that can travel up to 120 mph, that formed during the storm, as well as the weight of the ship's mast, one of the largest in the world, as possible factors in its sinking.

Body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch recovered, 1 still missing after luxury superyacht sank in freak storm off Sicily. Here's what we know about the incident.

Rescue crews recovered the body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch off the coast of Sicily, the Italian coast guard said Thursday. One woman still remains missing.

Four bodies were recovered on Wednesday by divers searching for six missing passengers who were aboard the Bayesian, a luxury superyacht that sank on Monday after it was caught in the middle of an unexpected and violent storm.

Among the passengers were Lynch's 18-year-old daughter and "associates who had successfully defended him in a recent U.S. federal fraud trial," the Associated Press reported .

What happened?

The Bayesian capsized about half a mile off the coast of Porticello, a small fishing village. There were 22 people on board — 12 passengers and 10 crew members. The City Council of Bagheria said in a statement that seven adults were taken to the emergency room following the rescue, but “it seems that none are in serious conditions.”

While crews searched for the remaining bodies, others are trying to confirm why the boat sank in the first place. According to a BBC report , a heavy storm hit the coast of Sicily and created waterspouts , which are tornadoes that form over water. The waterspout winds were so powerful that they broke the boat’s mast in half, causing the ship, which was anchored, to lose its balance and sink.

The U.K.’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch plans to send a team of four investigators to make a preliminary assessment of why the Bayesian sank and why people were still on board.

As the ship was going down, 15 people were able to make it to safety and were rescued by a nearby boat.

The crew on a Dutch-flagged vessel nearby noticed the yacht had disappeared and saw flares being set off in the sea. They went to help survivors before the Italian coast guard could arrive.

One British passenger, Charlotte Golunski, told reporters she kept her 1-year-old daughter alive by holding her up above the water until they got on a lifeboat.

What to know about the Bayesian

Charter sites list the yacht’s weekly rent as $215,000, the Associated Press reported .

Boat International , a superyacht and luxury yacht guide, reported that the Bayesian had the tallest aluminum mast in the world at over 240 feet, making it one of the 50 largest sailing yachts in the world.

Who is Mike Lynch?

Lynch, 59, founded the software firm Autonomy and recently faced a legal battle with U.S.-based Hewlett-Packard after the tech company accused him of inflating Autonomy’s value in an $11 billion sale in 2011.

Lynch was acquitted of multiple fraud charges in June after a three-month trial, avoiding a potential 20-year jail sentence.
