Welcome to Antigua and Barbuda

The easygoing English-speaking people who call Antigua and Barbuda home have a reputation for humor, hospitality and a "no problem"  attitude towards life. Visitors to these shores rarely want to leave and are usually planning to return even before they takeoff.

Over the years Antigua it self has become very important as the hub of the Eastern Caribbean and V.C. Bird International Airport has seen a tremendous increase in the number of services from North America and Europe.

It is also very easy to visit neighboring Caribbean Islands while comfortably based here. Facilities in Antigua and Barbuda are also being developed to add variety to life. There is a great range of Hotel from world famous luxury resorts to homely little establishments where the owner knows everybody by name and the famous stay by incognito.

The capital of St. John's also has two exciting waterfront developments for you to explore. The sunniest of the Eastern Caribbean Islands, Antigua is also the largest of the English-speaking Leeward Islands, about 14 miles long and 11 miles wide.

With 365 white sand beaches, Antigua claims to have one for every day of the year. The island is a must-see destination for scuba divers and snorkellers, who come from around the globe to explore the breathtaking nearly unbroken wall of coral reef that surrounds the island.

Once known as the "gateway to the Caribbean" because of its location and natural harbors, Antigua is dotted with reminders of its nautical past, from Nelson's Dockyard, one of Antigua's finest physical assets, built by Horatio Nelson in the eighteenth century, to the beautifully restored Redcliffe Quay. More than 100 picturesque stone windmills, some now housing bars, shops, restaurants, and homes, serve as a testament to Antigua's role in the sugar trade.

It's always summer in Antigua, with temperatures rarely falling below 25C, or exceeding 30C. Most of the island's water comes from the desalination plant and is potable, but bottled water is widely available everywhere. The local currency, the EC$, is pegged to the US$ (EC$2.60 = US$1) and can be obtained from banks or ATMs island-wide. Most establishments welcome US$ cash or travelers cheques, and major credit cards are widely accepted.

Yacht Entry and Clearance Procedures

The below list are the entry and clearance procedures for Antigua and Barbuda.

  • Please call the Coastguard on VHF Channel 16 from 6 hours out of Antigua to request entry to Antiguan and Barbudan waters.
  • Come along the dock at any one of the marinas and fly a yellow “Q” (quarantine) flag from a conspicuous point high in the rigging of a sailing vessel or the bridge of a motor yacht.
  • All passengers and crew will remain on board the vessel or yacht until clearance has been obtained.
Port Health must clear the vessel before any other clearance procedures take place. The Master only may proceed ashore to the customs and immigration office. No other crew members are allowed ashore until the entry procedures have been completed.
Masters of vessels arriving after hours must make certain no crew member is allowed ashore until entry procedure has been completed at the first available opportunity.
  • Masters of vessels wishing to cruise must check with the local Port Authority for permission to do so. A valid cruising permit entitles a vessel to cruise anywhere in Antigua and Barbuda waters unless an area has been specifically prohibited to navigation or is in the interest of national security.
The National Parks Authority and Antigua Port Authority regulations must be adhered to whilst the vessel is in Antigua and Barbuda waters.
  • Passengers and crew leaving a vessel in Antigua and Barbuda waters must have a valid airline ticket to a country that will accept them without question.  This ticket must be presented to the Immigration Officer on leaving the vessel.

Clearing In: for online procedures go to www.eseaclear.com

  • Acquire and fill out ED Cards. One for each person on board; ensure all three (3) sections are filled out.  ED cards must be signed by each person.  (Parents sign on behalf of children under 12 years). A Health declaration form must be completed for everyone on board.
  • Proceed to Customs.  Present Clearance from last Port and receive and fill out the General Declaration Form.
  • Proceed to Immigration.  Present ED Cards, Passports, General Declaration and Official Crew & Passenger Lists (6 Copies required for the clearing in process: in the absence of a Crew & Passenger list the names may be written on the General Declaration).
  • Back to Customs for final approval. Proceed to Port Authority.  Here the necessary fees for Entrance, Rubbish Disposal, Anchorage or Dockage and Cruising Permits can be paid; US and EC dollars are accepted as well as Credit Cards- VISA or MasterCard only.

Clearing Out: For online procedures go to www.eseaclear.com

  • Start at Port Authority; Pay any outstanding fees and receive a certificate of clearance.
  • Proceed to Customs and present the Certificate of Clearance to the Officer and receive and fill out a General Declaration form.
  • Proceed to Immigration and present Passports, the bottom portion of the ED card that would have  been  given  back  to  you when you were cleared in, the Crew & Passenger lists (4 copies required for the clearing out process) and the General Declaration form (if copies are lost you are required to complete a new ED card).
  • Back to customs.  Once all papers are in order you will be given clearance to leave.  All three entities  are in the same building both in English & Jolly Harbours and North Sound.
  • Masters wishing to exchange crew members must, in the presence of an Immigration Officer, sign the said crew member(s) off one vessel and onto another with both masters taking full responsibility.  Failure to do so will result in legal action.
  • It is illegal to sell or otherwise dispose of an airline ticket to persons other than those who originally purchased the ticket.  It is an offense to remain in Antigua & Barbuda without the consent of the Immigration authorities.
  • Vessels clearing out of Antigua & Barbuda must depart within 24 hours of completing clearance procedures.  All departing vessels will be obliged to pay harbour dues before departing.
  • In the case of crew members arriving by air or joining a vessel that is leaving for a foreign destination, a signed letter from the yacht’s captain or from a local agent will be accepted in lieu of a return ticket.  This documentation must be presented in advance of or at the time of the individual’s arrival at the airport.
  • Every vessel in Antigua & Barbuda’s waters must carry a valid cruising permit.  Vessels anchored in English Harbour or Falmouth Harbour or berthed at Nelson’s Dockyard, Antigua Slipway, Antigua Yacht Club Marina, Falmouth Harbour Marina and Catamaran Marina are subject to National Parks Authority fees in addition to Port Authority Fees.
  • Receipts for all Port and National Parks fees must be shown even if clearing out through a different port from the original Port of Entry.

Oyster hotel review, marina property vocative of a tropical villa retreat, with lush gardens and draped in nautical views .

This resort straddles two sides of a quiet, narrow public road with the marina and yacht club on the water side and rooms on the other. Rooms offer great views of Falmouth Harbour and the vessels (mostly impressive yachts) moored there. From the get-go, the resort feels more Balinese than Caribbean, with tropical villa-style residences scattered among lush gardens ascending the hill. The facade is dressed in subdued beige and white with wood accents, setting off the resort’s landscaping and dramatic harbor views. The panorama is mesmerizing, especially from the higher rooms and even more so at sunset.

Inside the reception, sturdy Indonesian-inspired timber pieces complement huge nature and marine life photos on neutral walls. There’s a long, solid-wood sofa with kelp-green cushions, a natural-wood check-in desk with a marble countertop, and a handsome work desk under a tiki empire lamp in the corner. The reception is gateway to the hotel wing, where two levels of rooms surround an open-air courtyard finished with palm trees and a gazebo. Meanwhile villa-style Studios and Suites are located up the hill with a windy driveway and lush tropical bougainvillea gardens all around.

Other than the golf carts buzzing up and down delivering guests to their units, the ambience is calm, making it a popular choice for visiting yacht-owners who want a place to stay while they moor their vessel's at one of the property's 105 slips.

In Falmouth Harbour, close to Nelson’s Dockyard, English Harbour, beaches, and restaurants

Antigua Yacht Club Marina Resort is set on both sides of a calm road in Falmouth Harbour, with plenty of highlights within walking (or short driving) distance. There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance, including waterfront venues right across the road. It’s an 11-minute walk from Admiral House and Nelson’s Dockyard -- a treasure trove for history buffs, where gift shops, restaurants, a hotel, and other businesses populate 18th-century stone buildings steeped in naval heritage. It’s nine minutes on foot to Pigeon Beach and 17 minutes to Fort Berkeley. It’s 35 minutes by car to VC Bird International Airport.

Indonesian island-inspired units, many with apartment-like layouts, kitchens, and large terraces

The resort comprises 30 Executive Suites and Studio Residences (in king or double configurations), and 19 Hotel Rooms. Rooms are located off the lobby, while other configurations are housed in villas that unfold up a steep, winding hill, with on-demand golf carts ready to take guests to and from rooms. For the best part, units are in excellent condition -- impeccably clean and new-feeling apart from the odd glimpse of wear and tear. Residences (which unfold over two floors) and Studios have particularly spacious layouts, with huge, all-weather terraces equipped with sturdy wooden lounge chairs and dining areas. Units are decked out in Indonesian-inspired wooden furniture, with more wood in the plank ceilings, slatted closets, window shutters, and French doors. Neutral floor tiles and walls, with crisp white beds, and sheer white curtains add a bit of contrast, livened up by rich pops of color in the form of monochromatic cushions on beds and the occasional piece of island artwork. All rooms feature minibars, air-conditioning, safes, flat-screen TVs, and DVD/CD players. Studios feature grand four-poster beds and full kitchens, and Executive Suites unfold over two levels, like luxurious townhouses with living and dining areas, open-plan kitchens, lower-level bedrooms (with platform beds), and terraces on both levels. Bathrooms are luxurious and large, with huge mirrors over granite-top wood vanities, large walk-in showers, hairdryers, and basic individual toiletries. The higher the room, the more spectacular the view -- best enjoyed by Suites and Executive Residences up the top of the hill.

A 105-slip, full service marina, modern gym, spa, free Wi-Fi, and on-site golf buggy shuttle

The resort's marina has 105 full service slips (all with water and electricity), as well as simple dockage. There’s no on-site restaurant, just a self-serve water, tea, and coffee station. However, the yacht club directly across the road has a restaurant and two cafes overlooking the water. There’s also a travel agent, a bookstore, a liquor store, and a mini-market. The resort's fitness center (also just across the street) is decked out with an impressive selection of modern cardio and weight-training equipment. Indigo Spa offers a good array of scrubs, massages, facials, and body treatments. An on-demand golf buggy transports guests to and from reception to overcome the steep climb up the hill. Milkshakes; smoothes; fresh juice; pastries; quiche; baguettes; croissants; pan au chocolat; Caribbean cake; delicious Italian gelato (produced in house) and exclusively imported Italian coffee all go towards making Seabreeze a popular hang out for yachties; locals and tourists alike. Along with all these other items they serve up a real Salad Nicoise and a real Greek Salad with fresh bread.

Antigua Yacht Club

ANTIGUA YACHT CLUB WAS FORMED IN 1967

The English Harbour Yacht Club was founded on Tuesday 21st November 1967. The founders were Mr. P. Deeth, Mr. & Mrs. A. Copeland, Mr. C. Schumacher, Mr. & Mrs. D. Nicholson, Mr. & Mrs. Lassabliers, Mr. J. Clegg and Ms. S. West.

On the 9th September 1969 Commodore, Peter Deeth, reported that the cabinet had approved the grant of land at Falmouth Harbour for use by the Yacht Club. On 23rd June 1970 the Commodore reported that a lease had been completed by Rowan Henry. It was signed by the Trustees and the Governor General on 13th April 1971. The lease was recorded and the matter was satisfactorily concluded. The first Yacht Club building was erected in 1970 by Jack Paterson. At the AGM of Sunday 21st May, 1972, the club name was changed to Antigua Yacht Club. The Yacht Club Executive Committee and members have used their best endeavors to promote the sport of sailing including, but not limited to Antigua Sailing Week, Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, RORC Caribbean 600, the Superyacht Cup Antigua, weekly dinghy racing and youth sailing programs.

Origins In the mid 1960’s, two new hotels – The Inn at English Harbour, owned by Peter Deeth, and the Admiral’s Inn, a leading light of which was Desmond Nicholson, started to race against each other on Sunday mornings, using the hotels’ Sailfish (predecessor of the Sunfish). Each hotel had three Sailfish and team racing took place in Freemans Bay. Competition was fierce, a trophy was obtained and at the end of racing each Sunday the victorious team carried off the trophy, which then sat in a place of honour in the bar at The Inn or Admiral’s Inn until the following Sunday. The trophy spent most of its time at The Admiral’s Inn as they could always field a team of “hotshot” helmsmen such as Jol Byerley, Peter van der Sloop and Richard “Hot Screws” Scott Hughes.

From this successful activity the idea was born of starting a local sailing club or yacht club. In1967, a small informal meeting of just a few people took place one early evening in The Admiral’s Inn bar. Present were Peter Deeth, Desmond Nicholson, Andy Copeland, John Clegg and one or two others. It was decided to form a club to hold Sailfish races in English Harbour and to start recruiting members. This was done with enthusiasm, word spread and there were soon a good number of sailors and supporters who all became members of what was to be called “The English Harbour Yacht Club”. Peter Deeth was elected the first Commodore. Membership fees were very low – the “Club” had little to offer. No clubhouse, no boats and only the opportunity to race or watch races on Sunday mornings. The Admiral’s Inn was that time the social centre of all things nautical in Antigua and Ethelyn Phillips, the Manageress, gave permission for races to start from the dock at the bottom of The Admiral’s Inn lawn. A Club bar was operated on the dock and the revenue from this, plus entrance fees for racing and membership fees, became the foundation of the Yacht Club finances. The Sunday morning racing soon became the social event of the week in English Harbour and there would often be a hundred or more people turning up to chat, enjoy the scene, and in some cases to actually race. The “Clubhouse” became a large box on the dock in which was kept all the paraphernalia for racing plus essentials for the bar.

The Club was run entirely by enthusiastic volunteers. There were no expenses and ever increasing revenue. Eventually, the finances became strong enough to consider actually having a proper clubhouse and better racing in more open water. Falmouth Harbour was the obvious choice. In 1969, an Extraordinary General Meeting was held on the lawn of the Admiral’s Inn and a proposal was made to move the Club to Falmouth and build a clubhouse there. Despite considerable opposition, the vote was carried. The Commodore negotiated with V.C Bird, the Prime Minister, to obtain a site in Falmouth and this was eventually granted. In 1970, Jack Paterson, a member and a contractor, was subpoenaed to build the clubhouse, and when it was up many enthusiastic volunteers turned out for a “painting party” to finish it off. Racing continued every Sunday – all day now. There was a barbecue lunch and the Club continued to be a great social, as well as sailing success. Everything was run by volunteers and thus the Club finances continued to prosper. As well as racing Sunfish a string of six 420’s were brought in Guadeloupe and towed over to Antigua by volunteer yachtsmen. In 1972, the Club’s name was changed to the Antigua Yacht Club.
