Aspen Carbon Cat: Next-Generation Boat Tender

The unique hull shape of the extremely stable Carbon Cat dinghy combines the best attributes of both catamarans and monohulls.

The boatbuilding team at Aspen Power Catamarans has developed a new line of lightweight rigid tenders that are unlike any dinghy built before. Carbon Cat 's patent-in-process hull form provides the stability of a catamaran or an inflatable RIB but utilizes lightweight carbon fiber construction making them fast, efficient, and easy to handle, according to company founder Larry Graf.

"The idea was to have a lightweight boat that would run very soft in a chop, which is hard to do, and a catamaran shape that delivers stability," he says.

The rugged carbon fiber composite construction makes the tender beachable, even on stones.

The hybrid design starts with a deep single-entry forefoot that smoothly cleaves through waves for improved tracking and spray resistance. The hull contour then gently widens aft and at the stern resembles a modified catamaran hull which provides lateral stability and lift. The resulting stability allows riders to step on the gunwales while boarding, and the sharp entry forward ensures a fast, efficient, dry ride. Take a look for yourself.

Aspen Carbon Cat Tour

The Carbon Cat construction and design means that the power requirements should be 35% less than typical inflatables due to the hard bottom and hybrid cat hull shape, according to Graf, who notes during sea trials, the T11 model reached a top speed of 21 mph powered by a single 9.9-hp Yamaha outboard. Using more moderate horsepower increases fuel efficiency and reduces weight. This makes the Carbon Cat and its engine easier to stow on board and easier to launch and retrieve.

Optional transom wheels make beaching the Carbon Cat even simpler.

The Carbon Cat is not nearly as heavy as it looks.

The gunwale is finished with a thick foam bumper made from SeaDek HD for durability and to eliminate scratches and abrasions. The seating area is also cushioned with SeaDek creating a softer surface and better grip.

The three current models, T9, T10, and T11, are 9, 10, and 11 feet respectively and weigh between 126 and 151 pounds. Prices range from $9,900 to $10,800.

About the Aspen Carbon Cat

Aspen Carbon Cats are ultra light weight, durable tenders made of carbon fiber with a super-efficient hull design.

MEET THE CARBON CAT

Unique patent applied for design, made for durability.

This hybrid design starts with a deep single-entry forefoot that smoothly cleaves through waves for improved tracking and spray resistance. The hull contour then gently widens aft and at the stern resembles a modified catamaran hull which provides lateral stability and lift. This unique hull form is so special we applied for patents on the design.

From the experienced boat building team at  Aspen Power Catamarans  comes a new series of lightweight rigid tenders that are unlike any boat built before. Carbon Cat’s unique patent in process hull form provides unparalleled stability, better than comparable small catamarans or inflatable RIBs. In addition to stability their lightweight carbon fiber construction makes them fast, efficient, easy to handle and extremely durable.

The gunwale is finished with a thick foam bumper made with SeaDek HD for durability and to eliminate scratches and abrasions. The seating area is also cushioned with SeaDek creating a softer surface and better grip.

Xtender 16.1 – the long-range, 50 knot tender that’s built like a superyacht

Dutch builder Xtender’s new flagship, the Xtender 16.1 yacht tender, is so customised that its build process was closer to that of superyacht. Designed for a discerning owner, the fully carbon yacht tender was created in collaboration with Herbert Dercksen, Dubois Naval Architects and GCA Architects.

The brief for the new Xtenders 16.1 yacht tender called for a boat that could be stowable on the superyacht where she would reside. Dubois drew the lines of the low deckhouse, while Herbert Dercksen’s experience as an Olympic sailor influenced the Xtender 16.1’s efficiency, stability and speed. She can reach a top speed of 50 knots – making her one of the fastest superyacht tenders – and impressively has a range of 500 nautical miles at 25 knots.

“I wouldn’t even call it a tender,” he says, “It’s more like a small superyacht. The project was conceived in the same way we do superyachts, with a specification designer and interior designer,” says owner representative Sebastian Allebrodt. “The 16.1 has been a big game changer for Xtenders and I feel they were working more as a superyacht shipyard during the project rather than a tender builder.”

GCA Architects from Barcelona decorated the detailed interior, which is a place where guests can have respite from the elements. The Xtender 16.1’s interior is decorated in clear-coat carbon veneers and has a full galley with Miele and CEA appliances like you’d typically find on a mothership. There’s also a day head, and the berth transforms into a sofa.

“Two of the most important factors were the correct use of the textures and of the colors; the cabin’s interior shows a strong contrast between the flat dark surfaces in carbon fibre and the coziness and softness of the white fabrics,” comments Anna Trillo of GCA Architects.

The Xtender 16.1 has notable features, such as a sun awning that can be used in speeds of up to 40mph. The entire yacht tranforms into a “floating island” while at anchor as the aft bulwarks fold down, creating a huge area for sunbathing

Xtenders aims to build the ultimate super yacht tender. This is achieved by building full customizable tenders with the highest level of construction and finishing according to a lightweight philosophy.

Xtenders accomplishes this lightweight philosophy by constructing their complete tenders in pre-preg carbon fiber which is cured in an autoclave.

A production technology known from formula 1 and the aerospace industry, thus this provides the most optimal structural performance while keeping the weight to a minimum.

Roots & Technology

After years of experience in building state of the art Extreme 40 sailing catamarans, Herbert Dercksen brings the cutting edge autoclave technology to the market of super yacht tenders: Xtenders.

This autoclave technology means that a component is produced under high pressure (up to 6 bar) and high temperatures (140°C) to cure the pre-preg carbon fibers. Total control of the material properties brings several advantages to super yacht tenders that have never been seen before in this industry.

The high pressure creates the best possible epoxy-to-weight ratio (lighter) and highest level of surface quality, while the high temperatures improve the longevity and mechanical properties of the components. Simply said, our tenders are stronger and lighter. Xtenders is the only tender manufacturer in the world that can provide all these characteristics to their tenders, by consistently using autoclave technology for every component.

Design Approach

During design we strive for involvement, quality and efficiency. We believe that, just like the mothership, each tender should meet the unique needs and taste of it's owner.

Whatever the purpose, dimensions, configuration or drive train of the tender may be, it can be beautifully integrated into one craft. The whole design process of every single tender starts with a blank sheet of paper and open conversation between Xtenders and the client. We intend to involve our clients in the design process. Working together towards the bespoke and unique end-result, we put a notable amount of effort into ideation and visualization the concepts which can vary from the simplest sketches to complete product renderings.

Building in autoclaved carbon is different to other production techniques. We guarantee the best result in regard to weight and durability of our tenders as our own design and engineering teams have an extensive experience in translating diverging concepts into strong and light products. Depending on the scale of the project, we work with a number of recognized partners from the industry. We strive for maximum efficiency of communication between design and manufacturing and stay involved for the quality monitoring until the last bolt is screwed on. To achieve that, we chose to bring the assembly and completion of the tenders to our headquarters to Almere.

Manufacturing

In order to ensure the highest product quality we work with the best carbon manufacturers in Europe. Which among others Marstrom (Sweden) is one of them.

Assembly and completion of each tender is done in house in Almere, The Netherlands. It has all the facilities and access to the waters of IJsselmeer to transform rough carbon components into high performance tenders of the best quality.

Assembly, drive train installation, electrical and hydraulic installation, painting, and testing are performed here by the best Dutch craftsmen under the supervision of design and engineering teams to ensure industry’s leading quality, performance and reliability.

This tender, made in Germany, would ideally be powered by a 10 to 15 hp outboard, and of course electric propulsion is also possible. Its deep-V hull has been designed to keep the crew as dry as possible – it can carry five people onboard, sat on the wide seats. The side protections and carrying handles allow for intensive use in any location.

Carbon Craft: Luxury Yacht Tenders

Capt. Jeff Werner

You know you want it...

Mocka Jumbies and Rum...

Bringing a new product to market begins with an aha moment, followed by the realization of a great design once only seen in the mind’s eye. From there, it is carried forward by an individual with the passion for and a vision of the future for that product. Carbon Craft is a perfect example of this scenario, as they bring small luxury tenders to yachting.

Four years ago, two business partners wondered why small tenders were usually limited to rigid inflatable boats. While easy to maneuver, RIBs aren’t very elegant and not too functional for seating, unless you don’t mind sitting on an inflatable tube. And if a passenger is finely dressed for evening ashore, that seat can become a very wet ride, quickly ruining a special occasion. It was exactly this experience which led to the the founding of Carbon Craft and the development of a prototype 13-foot hard tender built of carbon fiber with 75 percent more interior space than a RIB of the same size.

Today, Carbon Craft has a unique line of three tenders in different sizes made at their production facility in Tampa, Fla. Each tender takes advantage of lightweight carbon fiber hulls, and elegant interior appointments of teak and marine leather. The tenders are powered with high performance jet drives and each boat is wrapped bow to stern quarter with a padded fendering system, a closed-cell foam collar covered with ballistic nylon. All Carbon Craft luxury tenders have great eye appeal in any harbor.

The man tasked with making Carbon Craft the tender of choice for discriminating yacht owners is Chief Operating Officer Steve French. “About four years ago, I had my boat up on the Maine coast, and one of the founders of Carbon Craft had a new Lazzara with the prototype tender on back. He happened to dock at my stern in Portland, and I had to go over and ask him about this tender because I hadn’t seen anything like it,” said French. “This product just stuck with me, I thought it was a such a cool concept. And here I am.”

The hull, deck, steering console and other parts are laminated in a climate controlled clean room in molds from pre-preg carbon fiber. After the lamination process is completed, the molds are moved to a 20’ X 40’ curing oven for eight hours. The result is lightweight and strong parts assembled into very roomy boats, while keeping their finished weight on par with inflatable tenders.

The CC110, the smallest model at 11 feet long, has a teak deck and comfortable seating for five as well as plenty of stowage. It is a refreshing change from a RIB of similar length, and at first glance it is hard to believe how much boat is packed into the almost six foot beam. Powered by a 120 hp Weber four-stroke gasoline engine with water jet drive propulsion, the tender handles very easily. Since the jet drive uses vectored thrust, like an outboard engine does, the learning curve for a jet drive is very small for those used to operating outboards. Very maneuverable at slow speeds, the tender will also zip along at 37 knots under complete control.

As the models of Carbon Craft luxury tenders increase in size, so do the features available. The CC130 (13’ LOA) and the CC160 (16’ LOA) have folding hardtops serving as biminis available as an option. While all three models come standard with gasoline engines powering the jet drives, the 16 foot version can also be purchased with a diesel jet drive. The diesel engines are FNM, a marinized Fiat engine that is becoming popular with American yacht builders. The 135 hp diesel engine is coupled with an Alamarin jet drive with a top speed of 32 knots.

As many production boat builders with top notch products have found, yacht owners are always looking for bigger and better. In response to one such request, Carbon Craft recently launched a custom built 18-foot diesel jet tender which exceeds 40 knots of boat speed. No doubt the mold for this tender will soon become a production version.

Currently Carbon Craft’s target market is owners of yachts 60 to 110-foot LOA. Over the next few years, the company plans to utilize new technology such as large format presses for compression molding of carbon fiber parts which will make even lighter boats. These tenders will eventually find their way onto larger and larger mother ships.

Visit Carbon Craft at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show Nov 5 – 9. For more information go to www.carboncraft.com or call 800-709-1387.
