Wright’s design for the Delavan Lake Yacht Club departs dramatically from his earlier scheme for the Mendota boathouse, which also served as a recreational facility. While the Mendota boathouse referenced the Beaux-Arts designs of McKim, Mead, and White, the Delavan Lake Yacht Club is assembled from a series of simple geometric planes. Large, uninterrupted swaths of board-and-batten siding exaggerated the structure’s rectilinearity, while a low-hipped roof gave it a solid, compact appearance. A set of symmetrically oriented staircases led from the pier at the water’s edge to a terrace above. The interior had a central dance floor, dining room, buffet, ladies parlor, and kitchen. The Yacht Club was eventually demolished and a limited photographic record remains.

Dave keck wins 5th wya.

Great breeze Friday allowed for 2 great races with a tight fleet. After some lead changes, A-72 Charlie Eckert sailing with his father Ed Eckert took the bullet in Race 1 for the Chuck Johnson Memorial Trophy. The breeze built into the afternoon and B-1 Will Haeger and Kyle Stack secured the Race 2 Winner Salty Trophy.

While the combination of a lack of breeze and boat chop kept the fleet onshore Saturday, the competition turned to the volleyball court where “immediate rematch” after “immediate rematch” were played.

For Saturday evening, Delavan put on a party that did not disappoint! This Side Up took the stage at 6pm and rocked the club grounds into the night. The Delavan kitchen staff had a huge spread of food for the pickings including smoked chicken and brisket, shrimp, mac & cheese, and salads.

Sunday the fleet took to the water for an early 9 am warning. After a short on the water postponement the breeze filled in nicely and the race committee got Race 3 underway. By the 2nd up wind the pressure across the lake shutoff and racing was called for the day. The fleet headed back to the club for pullout, lunch and awards.

Thanks again to Delavan Lake Yacht Club - DLYC for the hospitality, PRO Mark Prange and his RC team, Larry Kmiecik - Kmiecik Imagery for the fabulous photos, and all who came to compete.

Overall rating

My partner and his family are members of the DLYC. We frequently attend fish fry's in the summer, and my partner participates in their mug club. I've also been to two wedding receptions hosted here. Both rented tents, and both were a hit. The fish fry is just okay, but I like the socializing aspect of attending--especially when they have karaoke nights. It's fun to hangout at the bar to close the place down.
