Prominent New York Attorney Christopher Morvillo and Wife Neda's Bodies Recovered from Sunken Yacht in Sicily

Christopher served as a federal prosecutor who worked on the criminal investigation of the Sept. 11 terror attacks

New York City attorney Christopher Morvillo and his wife, jewelry designer Neda Morvillo, died in a luxury yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily earlier this week, his law firm confirmed to PEOPLE. He was 59. She was 57.

The couple had been among six passengers who were missing after the Bayesian went down in the water early on Monday, Aug. 19, following a storm.

The final body from the  luxury yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily was found, Italian coast guard sources told PEOPLE on Friday, Aug. 23. The discovery comes after four bodies  were recovered  on Wednesday, Aug, 21, while a  fifth body was found  in the wreckage.

“We are deeply saddened and still coming to terms with this terrible loss,” says a spokesperson for the Clifford Chance law firm, where Morvillo worked, in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. “Our utmost priority is to continue to support Chris's family at this very distressing time. Our thoughts extend to the families and loved ones of all those affected.” 

The spokesperson adds, “We wish to express our deepest condolences and our love and support to Chris’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. We also want to thank the Italian authorities and rescue teams for everything they have done."

Christopher and Neda were aboard the Bayesian , a 183-foot vessel that sank around 5 a.m. local time on Monday after "violent" weather while off the coast of Porticello, the coast guard said in a statement previously obtained by PEOPLE.

At the time of the disaster the yacht was carrying 22 people. Immediately after it sunk, 15 people were rescued and 1 body was recovered — later  identified  as chef Recaldo Thomas.

While the Italian authorities have not formally identified the six recovered bodies, an Italian interior ministry official confirmed that British tech entrepreneur  Mike Lynch was one of the bodies found,  reported Reuters . His  daughter Hannah remained missing  at the time.

Christopher represented Lynch in a lengthy legal saga that dated back to the 2011 sale of Autonomy, a business software company Lynch founded, to Hewlett Packard.

Lynch was acquitted in the U.S. in June on 15 fraud and conspiracy charges, according to the Associated Press and the BBC .

Following the verdict, Christopher thanked the legal team for their help on LinkedIn . He noted that he was “so glad to be home” and ended his post with, “And they all lived happily ever after….”

Christopher and Neda then joined Lynch on the yacht "celebrating Lynch's acquittal,” a source told PEOPLE.

Christopher was a partner at the law firm Clifford Chance.Prior to that, his extensive experience included serving as a lead federal prosecutor who worked on the criminal investigation of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

Throughout his career, he specialized in healthcare fraud, insurance fraud, money laundering, obstruction of justice, counter-terrorism and narcotics.

“He was a genial and disarming guy,” said Preet Bharara, who worked alongside Morvillo and later became U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, according to The Wall Street Journal . “He got as good results in his cases as people who present as hard hitting, scorched-earth lawyers.”

Christopher came from a family of lawyers and credited his late father, Robert Morvillo, for teaching him in the field. “He was the best mentor I’ve ever had,” he told American Lawyer in 2018.

“I learned more during those years than at any other point in my career, largely from just watching my father skillfully navigate clients through some of the most complex challenges that this job can throw at you,” he said he said at the time.

Neda was a jewelry designer in New York City and listed her company under the name Neda Nassiri . According to her site, she trained with master goldsmith Cecelia Bauer and had been designing and hand-crafting fine jewelry for over 20 years. 

The couple is survived by their two adult daughters, Sabrina and Sophia Morvillo.

Weeks after the tragic death of 25-year-old Victoria G. Lee — who was shot in her apartment by a Fort Lee police officer just minutes after her family’s 911 call seeking help — Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin has issued major changes regarding how officers should handle situations involving barricaded individuals who are frequently in the throes of a mental health crisis.

The revisions, which follow several other similar fatal police shootings of individuals suffering from behavioral or mental health emergencies, come after more than a year of study and discussions with law enforcement agencies across the country, community support groups and mental health experts, Platkin said. The intention is to ensure tactical and crisis-negotiation teams responding to such incidents are optimally trained and have essential resources and equipment they need, he added.

An attorney who helped acquit missing tech tycoon Mike Lynch among those feared dead in superyacht disaster

• Morvillo, a former federal prosecutor, worked on high-profile corruption cases.

Among those missing and feared dead in the aftermath of the sinking of "Bayesian," a sailing yacht linked to British technology magnate Mike Lynch , are Lynch's attorney Christopher Morvillo and Morvillo's wife, according to a colleague. Lynch was reportedly on a cruise with friends and coworkers, including Morvillo, to celebrate his acquittal after facing prosecution for financial fraud related to the sale of his company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011. Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, as well as two others, are still missing.

Gary Lincenberg, an attorney who represented Lynch's co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain in the high-profile fraud case that recently ended with the acquittal of both men, said Morvillo and his wife "are presumed to be passed away" after the yacht went down near Sicily.

He said the news came shortly after he learned that Lynch's codefendant Chamberlain was killed, struck by a car while jogging on Saturday.

"In the course of 48 hours, I can't process what has happened, but both of our clients, as well as Chris and his wife, are gone," Lincenberg told Business Insider.

Lincenberg said in a follow-up email that Chamberlain "was a courageous man with unparalleled integrity" and that his acquittal preserved his good name, which would live on through his family.

Morvillo's law firm, Clifford Chance, didn't immediately reply to a comment request on Monday. One of Morvillo's family members declined to comment.

Before going into private practice, Morvillo was a federal prosecutor in Manhattan until 2005. He worked on several high-profile corruption cases and comes from a family of well-known New York white-collar attorneys.

Another attorney at the firm, Ayla Ronald, is reportedly among those who survived the yacht's sinking.

Search resumes for British tech magnate and 5 others after yacht sinks off Sicily

PORTICELLO, Sicily — Rescue teams and divers were returning to the site of a storm-sunken superyacht off Sicily on Tuesday to search for six people, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch, who are believed to be still trapped in the hull, 50 meters (164 feet) underwater.

Divers were loading a rescue dinghy at the port of Porticello, near Palermo, after a first search Monday ended unsuccessfully. Fire rescue crews reported that divers were unable to access the below-deck cabins because they were blocked by debris that had shifted during the violent storm that toppled the luxury sailboat early Monday.

Who are Mike Lynch and the other people missing after a yacht sank in Sicily?

Fifteen people survived, including a mother who reported holding her 1-year-old baby over the waves to save her. One body has been recovered, officials said.

“Access was limited to the bridge, due to the difficulty represented by the presence of furnishings obstructing the divers’ passage,” the fire crews said in a statement.

The search was made particularly difficult because the ship was resting on the seabed at a depth of 50 meters, which limits the amount of time divers can be underwater, said fire rescue spokesperson Luca Cari. As a result, the search is expected to take time, he told The Associated Press early Tuesday.

The 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian luxury yacht had been moored about a half-mile off Ponticello when a storm rolled in around 4 a.m. Monday. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, which had passed over the area.

Fifteen of the Bayesian’s 22 passengers and crew managed to escape, first onto a lifeboat and then by a nearby sailboat, the Sir Robert Baden Powell, that had also been moored offshore to ride out the storm, Karsten Borner, the captain of the Baden Powell, told reporters at the scene.

One body, belonging to the Bayesian’s chef, was recovered nearby.

Among those missing was Lynch , who was once hailed as Britain’s king of technology. He was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges in a U.S. federal trial related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp. His wife, Angela Bacares, survived.

The vacation appeared to be something of a celebration after Lynch's acquittal, with guests including some of the people who had stood by Lynch throughout the ordeal. Among those unaccounted for, according to the civil protection agency, were one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers, Christopher Morvillo of Clifford Chance, and Morvillo’s wife. Also among the missing was Jonathan Bloomer, the former head of the Autonomy audit committee who testified at Lynch’s trial, and his wife.

Among the survivors was Charlotte Golunski, who said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported. The father, identified by ANSA as James Emslie, also survived.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, was carrying 12 passengers and 10 crew. According to online charter companies, it has been available for charter for 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week and is notable for its massive 75-meter tall aluminum mast, one of the tallest in the world.

Ukraine claims Russian Su-25 jet downed in Donetsk Oblast

Anti-aircraft gunners of the 110th Mechanized Brigade have destroyed another Russian Su-25 attack aircraft in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine's military claimed on May 25.

"Another enemy Su-25 attack aircraft is burning up in the steppes of the Ukrainian Donbas," the Khortytsia operational and strategic group said in a post on Telegram .

This is the sixth Russian Su-25 jet that Ukraine has claimed shot down this month.

The Soviet-designed Su-25 , nicknamed "Frogfoot" by NATO, is a heavily armored ground-attack aircraft that provides close air support for Russian ground troops. The aircraft helps Russia carry out intense attacks in multiple sections of the eastern front, which covers much of Donetsk Oblast.

Ukraine previously claimed that it destroyed Su-25s on May 23 , May 4 , May 11 , May 13, and May 18. The General Staff said on May 25 that Russia has lost 356 planes since the launch of the full-scale invasion .

The Kyiv Independent could not independently verify these figures.

House G.O.P. Moves to Crack Down on Noncitizen Voting, Sowing False Narrative

The bills under consideration have virtually no chance of becoming law, but Republicans are using them to amplify Donald Trump’s false claims of widespread illegal voting by noncitizens.

Republicans are pushing legislation to crack down on voting by noncitizens, which happens rarely and is already illegal in federal elections, in a move that reinforces former President Donald J. Trump’s efforts to delegitimize the 2024 results if he loses.

On Thursday, House Republicans plan to vote on a bill that would roll back a District of Columbia law allowing noncitizens to vote in local elections, which they contend is needed to prevent Democrats from expanding the practice to other jurisdictions. And they are advancing another measure that would require states to obtain proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or passport, when registering a person to vote.

The legislation has virtually no chance of becoming law, but it serves to amplify one of Mr. Trump’s favorite pre-emptive claims of election fraud. It also underscores Republicans’ embrace of a groundless narrative — one that echoes the racist “great replacement” conspiracy theory — that Democrats are intentionally allowing migrants to stream into the United States illegally in order to dilute the voting power of American citizens and lock in electoral victories for themselves.

Speaker Mike Johnson recently appeared alongside Mr. Trump at Mar-a-Lago, the former president’s Florida resort and residence, to announce a pledge to get tough on migrants flowing across the border, suggesting with no evidence that they were coming in unchecked as part of a plot to vote for President Biden.

“There is currently an unprecedented and a clear and present danger to the integrity of our election system — and that is the threat of noncitizens and illegal aliens voting in our elections,” Mr. Johnson warned during a news conference on the steps of the Capitol this month.

But he conceded that he had no evidence to support that assertion.

“We all know, intuitively, that a lot of illegals are voting in federal elections, but it’s not been something that is easily provable,” Mr. Johnson said. “We don’t have that number.”

In fact, estimates are known and they are exceedingly low; a nationwide survey found the number of noncitizens suspected to have voted in the 2016 election was about 30.

“They don’t ever bring any evidence of actual fraudulent efforts being made by non-U.S. citizens to vote in federal elections,” said Representative Joseph D. Morelle of New York, the top Democrat on the Administration Committee. “So I think it’s pretty clear, pretty quickly, that this is all a pretext. They’re going to, once again, challenge the results of the election and they need to have a reason.”

Fears of noncitizens voting in American elections date back to the 1800s, but they have reached a fever pitch during the Trump era. Shortly after taking office in 2017, Mr. Trump met with congressional leaders at the White House and falsely claimed that he would have won the popular vote over former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton but for the three million to five million illegal immigrants who voted for her.

After Mr. Trump lost the 2020 election, there was so little evidence of noncitizens voting that he and his allies largely avoided the topic as they pushed to overturn the election results. They instead made myriad other complaints, including the use of drop boxes and mail-in voting during the coronavirus pandemic. They also pushed debunked conspiracy theories, including hacked voting machines, the dead voting en masse, and Italian satellites and Chinese-rigged thermostats flipping votes.

After falsely hyping the risk of illegal voting by noncitizens in previous elections, Republicans say this time is different. They maintain that so many undocumented immigrants have crossed into the country that the likelihood has grown, and that even a minuscule amount of illegal votes could swing a presidential election.

The bill slated for a vote on Thursday, sponsored by Representative August Pfluger, Republican of Texas, would repeal a D.C. law enacted in 2022 that allows noncitizens to vote in local elections. A number of municipalities, including towns in Maryland and California, allow noncitizens to participate in local elections, particularly for school board, where their children go to school.

Representative Bryan Steil, Republican of Wisconsin and chairman of the Administration Committee, warned at a recent hearing that the practice could spread. He pointed to a programming glitch in Pennsylvania that allowed noncitizens to register to vote and a review that found more than 100 noncitizens on Ohio voter rolls .

“American elections are for American citizens, and we intend to keep it that way,” Mr. Steil said.

Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton, the Democrat who is D.C.’s nonvoting delegate, argues that Congress has no business interfering in D.C.’s local affairs.

Republicans also are moving forward this week on the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, sponsored by Representative Chip Roy, Republican of Texas and an influential leader of the ultraconservative House Freedom Caucus.

Mr. Roy’s bill would require states to obtain proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or passport, in person when registering someone to vote and require states to remove noncitizens from voter rolls.

“Secure elections are a key cornerstone for any representative government; without them, we won’t have a country,” Mr. Roy said in a statement. “Radical progressive Democrats know this and are using open border policies while also attacking election integrity laws to fundamentally remake America.”

Democrats contend that requiring voters to register in person and produce a birth certificate or passport — which many Americans, particularly teenagers or younger adults, do not have readily available — simply makes it harder for citizens to vote.

Nearly 40 percent of the adult voting population did not cast a ballot in the last presidential election, and Mr. Morelle argued that further roadblocks would only make it more difficult for Americans to participate.

“It’s just another way of stopping people from voting,” Mr. Morelle said of the G.O.P. legislation. “I mean, they just continue to suppress the ability of people to vote.”

Brad Raffensperger, the Georgia secretary of state who famously rejected Mr. Trump’s demands to overturn the results of the 2020 election in his state, has found common ground with Mr. Trump and Mr. Johnson over banning noncitizens from voting.

“Since I took office in 2019, I’ve urged Congress to take action to change federal law and ensure that noncitizens cannot vote in our elections,” he said in a statement. “I thank Speaker Johnson and the former president for following my lead, and I look forward to action finally being taken in Congress.”

But David Becker, the director of the Center for Election Innovation & Research, said that cases of noncitizens voting in federal elections were very rare and that he suspected that Republicans had ulterior motives.

“Imagine someone who had risked everything to be in the United States, or had gone through all of the process to be here legally, risking their status by shining a hot spotlight on themselves and a bull’s-eye on themselves in order to cast one ballot in an election in which 160 million ballots are going to be cast,” he said. “It doesn’t happen.”

Mr. Becker said the federal government and states, including Georgia, already had good policies in place to prevent it.

“This is largely being done, along with other lines of disinformation, to prep the United States for the argument that an election was stolen by people who apparently believe the candidate they support is likely to lose,” Mr. Becker said.

Eight civilians injured in Russian attacks on Donetsk Oblast

R ussian forces continued targeting Donetsk Oblast on 22 August, with a total of eight people injured in the Kramatorsk, Pokrovsk and Bakhmut districts.

The occupiers targeted a private residential area, where a couple - a 66-year-old woman and a 63-year-old man, as well as their 85-year-old neighbour - were rescued from under the rubble of two houses. All of them were taken to hospital with head wounds, broken ribs and bruises. A 47-year-old civilian was injured in another house."

Details: In addition, as a result of an artillery attack on Kostiantynivka, two women aged 49 and 31 sustained injuries to their legs and chest.

The Russians also shelled a residential area of Toretsk with artillery, wounding a 70-year-old woman. Another 65-year-old civilian was injured in Novohrodivka during an attack.

The 24.4m/80'1" open yacht 'G&J' was built by Overmarine in Italy. Her interior is styled by Italian designer design house Overmarine and she was completed in 1992. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Stefano Righini and she was last refitted in 1999.

Built with a GRP hull and GRP superstructure, with teak decks, she has impressive speed and great efficiency thanks to her planing hull. Powered by twin diesel Caterpillar (3412DITA) engines, she comfortably cruises at 30 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 38 knots. Her low draft of 1.58m/5'2" makes her primed for accessing shallow areas and cruising close to the shorelines. Her water tanks store around 1,500 Litres of fresh water.
