Her exterior is excellent for entertaining and alfresco dining as well as easy performance sailing. Her sheltered and roomy cockpit area gives a wonderfully protected outside space. She has sunbathing loungers to aft as well as a snug tented forward seating area. Her interior is spacious and light-filled as created by her split level saloons. This interior layout gives a light and spacious area for dining and relaxation up in the deck saloon area which is on the same level and the aft cockpit. Also, the lower saloon space allows for a more intimate ambience below. Dubois has been designing large sailing superyachts for some time and with considerable success. The Valquest yacht benefits from several leading Dubois superyachts in the evolution of modern yacht design. This sailing yacht has been custom designed to perform pleasingly during long range cruising in safety and comfort. She has spacious storage compartments built into her structure so that deck and social areas are left free of sailing equipment. Ship captain who saw Mike Lynch’s yacht sink blames ‘extreme mast’

An eye witness to the sinking of British tech entrepreneur  Mike Lynch ‘s yacht on Monday attributed the tragedy to the extremely tall mast, which made the vessel more vulnerable to the violent storm that was lashing the area.

Dutch ship captain Karsten Börner, whose own boat was anchored near Lynch’s Bayesian , told the Financial Times that the superyacht appeared to have stability problems.

“The center of gravity is too high with this extreme mast,” he explained, while also dismissing the Italian coast guard’s initial view that the Bayesian was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“I was on the same spot,” Börner added. “I have two masts and they are 28 and 29 meters above deck, she has one, 73 meters (239.5 feet) above deck.”

Authorities are looking into  possible reasons Lynch’s yacht quickly sank , when other boats nearby seemed to weather the same storm without issue.

The 56-meter long superyacht had been carrying 22 passengers and crew. Börner rescued 15 passengers and said they told him the ship sank in less than two minutes.

He also described the wind as “violent, very violent,” telling the FT that the wind speed likely reached hurricane strength as “tons of water” came down.

“I never saw that before, there was a water tornado,” he said.

The CEO of the Italian Sea Group, which owns the company that built the Bayesian , previously told the FT that it was designed to be stable with its tall mast and suggested the crew didn’t carry out proper safety measures.

But Börner said the crew told him they “closed the ship,” according to the FT .

The Italian Sea Group didn’t immediately respond to Fortune’s request for comment on Börner’s remarks and declined to comment to the FT .

Meanwhile, prosecutors in Italy have launched a probe into the shipwreck and multiple counts of culpable homicide, which are equivalent to manslaughter charges.

The Italian coast guard also confirmed Friday that it had recovered the body of Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah. In addition to Lynch and his daughter, the other victims included  Morgan Stanley  International chair Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy Bloomer; Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, American jewelry designer Neda Morvillo; and chef Recaldo Thomas.

On Saturday, Italian prosecutors told reporters that the emergency began at 4:38 a.m. local time , when a red flare was launched and seen by the coast guard, adding that the passengers were likely asleep at the time.  

Deputy prosecutor Raffaele Cammarano told reporters that a crew member had been on duty, as required, when the “truly sudden” storm struck.

Chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio   said ship-tracking data showed the yacht started to drift from anchor just before 4 a.m., then traveled about 360 meters over five minute to the spot where it eventually sank some 15 minutes after that.

Steward CEO Ralph de la Torre won't testify before Senate panel, calling it "pseudo-criminal proceeding"

BOSTON - Ralph de la Torre, the CEO of Steward Health Care, says he will not testify at a hearing in Washington next week led by a bipartisan group of senators looking into his bankrupt company .

Back in July, de la Torre was ordered to testify at a public hearing next Thursday before the Senate Committee on Healthcare, Education, Labor and Pensions.

Ralph de la Torre's response

He responded to the subpoena Wednesday with a scathing letter from his attorney, Alexander Merton, to the HELP Committee, saying the senators appeared "determined to turn the hearing into a pseudo-criminal proceeding in which they use the time, not to gather facts, but to convict Dr. de la Torre in the eyes of public opinion."

Instead, he's asking the panel to reschedule the hearing until after Steward's bankruptcy process has finished.

Steward filed for bankruptcy reorganization in May and is working to sell all of its hospitals , including five in Massachusetts .

Bernie Sanders "disappointed"

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, chairman of the HELP Committee, released a statement Wednesday afternoon, saying he is "disappointed, but not surprised" that de la Torre will not testify.

"Perhaps more than anyone else in America, Dr. de la Torre is the poster child for the type of outrageous corporate greed that is permeating through our for-profit health care system," Sanders said. "Working with private equity vultures, he became obscenely wealthy by loading up hospitals across the country with billions in debt and selling the land underneath these hospitals to real estate executives who charge unsustainably high rent. As a result, Steward Health Care, and the more than 30 hospitals it owns in eight states, were forced to declare bankruptcy with some $9 billion in debt."

Sanders said he is now working with committee members "to determine the best path forward."

"But let me be clear: We will not accept this postponement. Congress will hold Dr. de la Torre accountable for his greed and for the damage he has caused to hospitals and patients throughout America," Sanders continued. "This Committee intends to move forward aggressively to compel Dr. de la Torre to testify to the gross mismanagement of Steward Health Care. It is time for Dr. de la Torre to get off of his $40 million yacht and explain to the American people how much he has gained financially while bankrupting the hospitals he manages."

Senators call refusal to testify "outrageous"

Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey and Sen. Elizabeth Warren issued their own joint statement, calling his refusal to testify "outrageous."

"Dr. de la Torre's defiance of a subpoena to appear before the Senate is outrageous," Markey and Warren said. "He got rich as private equity and real estate vultures picked apart, and drove into bankruptcy, hospitals that employed thousands of health care workers who served communities in Massachusetts and across the country. De la Torre used hospitals as his personal piggy bank and lived in luxury while gutting Steward hospitals. De la Torre is as cowardly as he is cruel. He owes the public and Congress answers for his appalling greed - and De la Torre must be held in contempt if he fails to appear before the Committee."

Criminal investigation into Steward  

CBS News was first to report in July that federal prosecutors in Boston are investigating Steward Health Care on allegations of fraud and corruption.

The Senate investigation is aimed at holding de la Torre and Steward accountable for its management of dozens of community hospitals across the country.

"Indeed, there have been calls for criminal investigations of Dr. de la Torre by members of this Committee, ascribing guilt to him without a factual basis for doing so," de la Torre's attorney said in his letter Wednesday.

"It is not within this Committee's purview to make predeterminations of alleged criminal misconduct under the auspices of an examination into Steward's bankruptcy proceedings, and the fact that its Members have already done so smacks of a veiled attempt to sidestep Dr. de la Torre's constitutional rights by seeking sworn testimony on matters for which the Committee has pre-determined his guilt. Dr. de la Torre's testimony before the Committee under these circumstances would be wholly inappropriate."

Merton said his client won't testify at this time because "as doing otherwise may run afoul of the federal court order prohibiting him from discussing the above-referenced mediation efforts."

Every Car Brand GM Owns In 2024

General Motors has a history that goes back over 100 years, and that history includes a lot of car brands. Throughout its history, GM has purchased, merged-with, established, and, in many cases, seen the shuttering of over 40 companies including icons like Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Saab. There were even some early unsuccessful attempts to purchase Ford.

Some of these GM ownerships were short-lived, while others are still alive as of this writing. Several of the brands GM currently owns actually pre-date General Motors altogether. With dozens of automotive brands scattered throughout the history of GM, you might think that they currently have a massive portfolio of car brands currently to their name, but that's not the case. The General Motors car brand stable is reasonably sized. Just four brands currently fall under the GM umbrella, with a few partnerships worth mentioning as well. Here are all of the car brands GM owns in 2024, along with honorable mentions of some of the brands that have dotted its long history.

2024 Encore GX Avenir

Buick is the longest-running brand that's still in the General Motors lineup. In fact, Buick has been around longer than GM. David Buick made his first automobile in 1899, and after a few successful early years, the company incorporated in 1903. During the early Buick years, the company claimed several performance records, including the fastest five-mile distance for a two-cylinder car achieved in a time of six minutes and 19 seconds. GM founder William Durant wasn't sold on automobiles in the early days, and he's credited with saying that they were too dangerous, frightening horses and people alike. But after some time in a Buick in the early 1900s, Durant changed his mind.

The initial success of the Buick brand led to the foundation of General Motors in 1908, and Buick has been around ever since. Throughout the years, the brand has had some big hits, with critical successes like the Buick Grand National, the GSX, and the Riviera. Currently, their lineup is a bit less sporty and it consists of four crossover SUVs with an alliterative naming convention: the Envision, Enclave, Encore, and Envista. While they aren't quite the top of the luxury heap when it comes to GM products, Buick SUVs do offer a bit of extra style, some upscale trim levels, and an air of sophistication.

2024 Sierra AT4X AEV

Like Buick, the GMC name has been around for quite some time. The brand was founded in the early 1900s and came about after GM purchased the automotive brands Rapid and Reliance. There's some disagreement as to the meaning of the GMC name. Some say it stands for Grabowsky Motor Company, since Max and Morris Grabowsky started the company. But what it actually stands for has its roots in the company name "General Motors Truck Company." The "Truck" part of the name was dropped eventually, leaving us with simply General Motors Company, or GMC. 

GMC was part of a large number of purchases made by GM in the early 1900s. The brand made trucks that were intended for use in commercial and industrial functions. Eventually, they made vehicles like the first mass-produced diesel-powered truck in the late 1930s and military vehicles including the iconic six-wheeled CCKW, or the "Deuce and a Half," and an amphibious vehicle called the DUKW, or the Duck.

In the 1960s and '70s, GMC became a bit more lavish, offering luxurious versions of GM products that were closely related to offerings from Chevrolet. Today, that same relationship carries on with GMC making luxurious versions of several Chevy-based SUVs and pickup trucks. For example, the GMC Sierra 1500 is essentially a Chevy Silverado underneath, with a few additional ritzy bits to class things up. GMC also currently uses the Hummer name (once a GM-owned brand as well) for electric-powered vehicles like the Hummer EV off-roader SUV .

CT5-V Blackwing

Cadillac is GM's top luxury brand, which typically includes General Motors' biggest, most-expensive concept vehicles — like the new super-luxury $300k Cadillac Celestiq . The name Cadillac comes from the founder of the city of Detroit, Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. Antoine founded the city of Detroit in 1701, but it wasn't until 200 years later his name was invoked for the now-famous car brand. 

In 1902, the Henry Ford Company was about to be liquidated. After Henry Ford left the company (to start Ford Motor Company), Henry Leland stepped in to place a value on the assets left at the factory. He concluded that the automobile Ford was preparing to make was viable for production and convinced the investors that the tools and factory should be used to make the new 1903 Cadillac, using an engine from the Olds Motor Vehicle Company.

In the early days of Cadillac, there were extremely strict standards for production, which helped establish Cadillac's luxury reputation. The brand also pioneered the use of interchangeable parts between automobiles and Cadillac was eventually sold to GM in 1909. Over the last 100-plus years, Cadillac has produced some truly iconic designs , including sporty sedans like the CTS-V and ultra-plush, two-door land-yachts like the Coupe de Ville. Its luxury lineup today (which shares a number of platforms with Chevrolet and GMC) includes some EVs, a few high-performance sedans, and one of the largest full-size SUVs you can buy in 2024 , the Escalade ESV.

2024 Colorado ZR2 Bison

The biggest and most widely-known General Motors brand is Chevrolet. It makes most of GM's mainstream vehicles and its most popular vehicle, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 off-road pickup . Like Cadillac and Buick, Chevrolet gets its name from a person. Louis Chevrolet, once a racer for the Buick company, won several road races in the U.S. before he turned his gaze to building cars. In 1911, William Durant and Louis Chevrolet co-founded Chevrolet Motor Company, which put out its first cars in 1914. Louis eventually left the company that bore his name, returning to racing and forming the Frontenac Motor Corporation where he built parts for — get this — Ford engines.

In 1918, General Motors acquired the Chevrolet Motor Company and by 1923, had sold 1 million cars. Over the years, Chevy has produced iconic car models including the Impala, Camaro, and Corvette. For a long time, Chevy has offered a wide variety of available cars. That's no different today, with offerings in nearly every vehicle segment that exists. From small SUVs like the Trax and Trailblazer to heavy-duty pickups like the Silverado HD to the supercar-fast, 1,064-horsepower Corvette ZR1 , there's quite a few choices when you step into a Chevy dealership. It's no wonder that they've been GM's best-selling brand for years.

Notable past brands, foreign brands, and partnerships

Over the years, General Motors has owned dozens of brands. There are too many partnerships and past ownerships to dive into here, but we thought there were some brands worth mentioning, whether because of a historical context or because they exist alongside GM today.

Brands like Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Saab, and Saturn are probably some of the first to come to mind when you think about the history of GM and companies that no longer grace their balance sheets, but there are several others that might be less obvious. For instance, GM owned Lotus for a short time — from 1986 to 1993 — but eventually sold the brand to Romano Artioli, who owned Bugatti. GM also purchased the Australian company Holden in 1926, but the brand was eventually shut down in 2020. Opel and Vaxhaull were once GM brands, too, and were sold to the French automaker PSA in 2017. 

SAIC-GM-Wuling (also known as SGMW) is a current joint venture between General Motors and two other brands, SAIC Motor and Liuzhou Wuling Motors. There's some complicated math regarding ownership percentages, but SGMW is essentially a successful GM partner with several small vehicles available in China. Finally, Honda and GM had plans to create cheaper, smaller EVs but called them off . However, the brands did collaborate on several current models that use GM's Ultium platform, with the Prologue and ZDX on the Honda/Acura side and the Blazer EV and Lyriq on the Chevy/Cadillac side.

The underground pasta school in an abandoned Italian ghost town

Simonetta Bazzu teaches tourists to make traditional Sardinian pasta, but her biggest dream is to help young Sardinians love their island and its traditions.

There I was, sitting on a plush white sofa in a centuries-old stone house in the abandoned, 400-year-old Sardinian village of Battista. The house was a traditional stazzu  (a granite dwelling common to farmers and shepherds in this north-eastern part of the island), and despite having stood empty for more than 40 years, a careful restoration made it feel as though time had stood still. There was a large stone fireplace, the original wood-burning cooking hearth, original stone flooring and a sleeping platform. Only the flat-screen TV served as a jarring reminder that you can sit in the past while staring at the present.

To get here, I'd followed narrow, tortuous roads perched above cavernous green valleys; a dramatic juxtaposition from the quaint cafes and colourful buildings of downtown Olbia 20km north, or the turquoise beaches and yachts in Porto Cervo further along that same curvaceous route. I saw no people along the drive but had been forced to stop abruptly at one point as dozens of sheep flooded the road, bells clanging wildly.

"That's normal here," said my glamorous hostess Simonetta Bazzu, looking every inch a young, blonde Sophia Loren as she welcomed me into her home. Reassuring, but so far little about my experience with her felt normal. Especially not the fact that she owns 11 rough-hewn, uninhabited stazzus  that make up the oldest part of Battista, where many of her ancestors – and her father – were born. 

The village became abandoned more than four decades ago when the last of its inhabitants – her 100-year-old grandfather, Salvatore and 95-year-old grandmother, Angelina – lived out the last 10 years of their life in Olbia to be close to modern conveniences not available anywhere near Battista, such as doctors and markets.

In a stunning feat of imagination and ingenuity, Bazzu has turned this tiny ghost town into a Sardinian culinary educational centre and pasta school through her brand,  Vittoria Arimani , which she launched in 2019. Thanks to the careful restoration work of Bazzu’s father, who owns a construction company, three of Battista's abandoned stazzus have been converted into modern showpieces befitting Architectural Digest – an old goat barn turned into a wine cellar, a one-room stazzu into a pasta and bread museum, and the two-room stazzu , where Bazzu's great-great-grandparents once lived, into a pasta-making kitchen complete with an outdoor wood-burning oven and patio that could double as an upscale restaurant garden. 

Bazzu's noble goal: to teach Sardinia's younger generation how to make the bread and pasta their ancestors made – for free – so the traditions can live on.

Lucky tourists like me are secondary beneficiaries of that vision, as Bazzu finances her work through the paid experiences she offers every day, year-round, inviting guests from all over the world to roll pasta on her gorgeous handmade kitchen table. Between the more tourist-driven months of May and October, she offers two classes a day – a lavish lunch or dinner with fruit and vegetables from her garden, baked goods, homemade cheese and wine and more history than one would expect to find in a traditional cooking school. 

Sitting on the patio for lunch that day, I could hear birds singing and a lone dog barking in the distance. There are just five neighbours in the area, making the sounds of the past feel much louder than anything in the present.

That most certainly included the food, which Bazzu presented to me as a sort of historical dinner theatre, offering the foundational ingredients from her island in each course. Rose petals were strewn across a tree trunk used as a serving platter, and wedges of crusty bread were spread with homemade lemon marmalade and dusted with a powder she made from dried orange peel.

Into tiny golden porcelain cups, she poured coffee made from acorns she boiled, roasted and ground. It was burnt and nutty in the most delicious way, and she told me her grandmothers drank this, along with coffee made from chickpeas and barley. 

"In times of famine, we used what the land could give," she said. "And before there were airplanes, it wasn’t easy to bring sugar, coffee, tobacco or chocolate to Sardinia. My ancestors used honey, almonds, lemon, orange, semolina, barley and acorns."

The island's bounty is staggering. Bazzu told me that in Oliena alone – a village of just 7,000 people in Sardinia’s central-eastern Nuoro province – 37 different almond varieties have been discovered.

"In Sardinia, we have more than 1,200 different types of bread," she added, "and more than 200 different types of pasta – including filindeu , a sacred pasta that not everyone can make."

Bazzu learned to make filindeu and other ancient foods from living in small villages on different parts of the island over the last decade, studying bread and pasta making with the older matriarchs. I poured myself more coffee as I watched her crush walnuts from her home garden with a brick she found in the dirt. Soon, the nuts were whirring in a blender, along with water and Pecorino cheese, to finally be poured onto a bowl of Maccarones de ferrittu – a pasta from the Barbagia region in the centre of Sardinia named for the iron knitting needles from which they were traditionally shaped. They looked like doughy cigarettes after we rolled them by hand on the table her father made from an old tree.

As I brought a glass of her homemade wine to my lips, I asked why she built all this, and she began to cry.

"I love my island, but life in Sardinia is very difficult," she said. "We are a beautiful island, but we are in the middle of the sea. In the winter, we have just two flights a day, and the boat is very expensive, so if we have wind, we have no boat and no flights. We have many problems. When I cry it's because it’s hard."

"Too many young people go to other cities for work," she added. "I wanted to change the situation in Sardinia and show our history to the whole world."

Her mission to inspire young Sardinians to connect with their heritage while educating outsiders about the value of supporting its gastronomic economy was initially met with a lack of understanding.

After earning a law degree in Milan and managing her father's construction company for 14 years, she says it was difficult for her father to understand why she would choose to make pasta instead of continuing to work with him. "For my father, to make pasta and cheese was to live, not for a hobby or occupation," she said.

Because of this, Bazzu started with no money or support, catering to tourists who spoke English, which she did not know how to speak at the time.

"It was very, very difficult,” she said. "My parents didn't help me when I started. People asked, 'why do you choose this work? Why do you make pasta?' Slowly, people started to understand my work and my mission with younger people in Sardinia. 

To get the word out about her mission, she often chats to strangers on the street. As we strolled through the alleys of downtown Olbia one afternoon, she stopped a man wearing a chef's jacket as he was entering his apartment. He was stunned when he learned he could train with Bazzu for free. It's her hope that this kind of enthusiasm creates a ripple effect that will imbue younger Sardinians with pride in their heritage. She also hopes they can build on it by putting their own stamp on things, as Bazzu does.

"I am younger and love Chanel and disco, but I love to make pasta and cheese," she said. "I love my tradition, but I am modern. God chose me to show the world that Sardinians are also part of the younger tradition."

After many years, she's finally been recognised for the impact her work has had on her fellow islanders. In 2022 she was asked to appear on Stanley Tucci’s show, Searching for Italy – where she pulled a bubbling tray of zuppa cuato – a traditional Galluran dish of thin, crisp Sardinian flatbread layered with lamb broth, local cheese and wild mintfrom her wood-fired oven – while donning stilettos and a low-cut green floral dress with a thigh high slit that might make the island's numerous centenarians (and her ancestors) blush.

When Tucci remarked that it resembled lasagna, she referred to it as "Sardinian lasagna" that doubles as a "hidden soup" because the broth is absorbed, giving the dish a remarkably rich flavour. 

Now a de facto spokesperson for Sardinia's culinary riches on international television, she has also been featured regularly in Sardinian newspapers L’Unione Sarda and La Nuova Sardegna . And while inspiring future generations and catering to the many tourists who have come through her kitchen over the last five years, you'd think the success would have gone to her head. But that's not Bazzu's style. She's only got her grandmothers to impress, and knows that wherever they are, they'd be proud to see her carrying on their legacy. Especially in stilettos. 

"This isn’t an easy job, but it’s my happiness," she said. "I live today, like my grandmothers yesterday. I have gratitude for my land, and just want people to know the real Sardinia."

The Maltese Falcon was first commissioned in 2000, and after 6 years of construction, made her debut in 2006. After a refit in 2020, she is looking fresher than ever, ready to take her guests on adventures all over the globe. Considering her age, it is impressive how she still holds her own next to the more modern vessels built in recent years.

She’s a former record holder

At the time of her delivery, the Maltese Falcon held the title of the world’s largest sailing yacht. At 88m in length, her size was incredibly impressive. The superyacht held onto this accolade for 9 years until 2015, when Nobiskrug delivered the 143m Sailing Yacht A, ending the Maltese Falcon’s reign at the top. Nowadays, several sailing yachts are considerably bigger, including Oceanco’s Black Pearl, as well as Y721, which is  due to be delivered in 2022 .

She’s one of the largest yachts available to charter  

At her sizeable 88m length, the Maltese Falcon is one of the largest sailing yachts available to charter. Before building the famous sailing yacht, Perkins already had an established relationship with Perini Navi, the shipyard that built the Maltese Falcon. The Italian shipyard had previously delivered the 43m Andromede la Dea in 1987. The vessel (which is now called Paz) was the second yacht ever built by Perini Navi.

She has a cinema onboard
