So, first off, I am not a member, I am the cousin of a member, but we have been there a few times with her. They have what seems to be a great sense of community and it seems to be a pretty decent value for what you get with having a slip, being a member and what you pay for drinks and such. I can't speak to a lot of the services, but everything we have dealt with there has been enjoyable.

History of the Grassy Island Front Range Lighthouse

U.S. Coast Guard Archive Photo of the Grassy Island Lighthouse

Grassy Island is a low-lying island in the middle of Green Bay, which blocked direct navigational access to the Fox River. If the area was to develop, ships would need a more direct route into the river. Money was approved for a lighthouse as early as the late 1830s, but with the island only several feet above the water line, it was feared that constant flooding would occur, and therefore the light was delayed.

A channel creation plan was developed, and dredging started in 1866. The dredging would take several years, but when it was completed in 1872, there was a two hundred foot wide shipping channel directly through the middle of Grassy Island. At this time, it was decided that the island would get a pair of range lights.

The two wooden towers would be built on the eastern side of the shipping channel. The idea was that mariners would line up the two towers. The height of the two towers varies with the Front Range light stands twenty-five feet tall, while the Rear Range light is thirty-five feet tall. When they appeared that they were on top of one another, then the ship was heading correctly into the channel. Also built at that time on the island were a two-and-a-half-story keeper's house, a boathouse, and a pier.

With traffic into the Fox River increasing, it was decided in 1966 that the shipping channel would be widened. This meant that the lighthouses would have to be moved. The Government was going to burn the towers down rather than moving them when the Green Bay Yacht Club stepped in. They were floated by barge to the grounds of the Yacht Club, where they sat for 30 years neglected. A new chapter is slowly being written in the history of the towers. The Green Bay Yacht Club moved the towers to their new permanent location on the grounds in 1999, and they have slowly begun restoration. The pictures that shot when I visited in 2007 show the towers in a state of restoration.

Directions: The lighthouse is located on the grounds of the Green Bay Yacht Club. From I-43, get off at exit 187. Make a left onto N. Webster Street and continue to the intersection. This will be N. Irwin Ave. Take this north, as it rounds the corner, the road will change names to Bay Beach Road. Continue on Bay Beach Road to the end. At the end will be the Green Bay Yacht Club and the Coast Guard Station. From the parking lot, you can get great shots of the lighthouse.

Access: Grounds open. Towers closed.

Green Bay Yacht Club invites public to see restored lighthouses

GREEN BAY (WLUK) — The public was invited for free tours of the Green Bay Yacht Club Sunday.

Visitors were able to take a look at the refurbished Grassy Island Range Lights.

They were built in 1872 and guided mariners until they were decommissioned in the early 20 century.

Club members contributed countless hours to restore the lighthouses.

"It's an honor. If you look, that's the first thing a lot of people in this city see, our lighthouse," said Gary Kuschel, commodore.

The lighthouses were placed on the National Register of History Places in 2005.

In the present condition of the entrance [at Green Bay] a vessel can get out of Chicago harbor loaded with one hundred tons more freight than it can from this; and by reason of its tortuousness, it is entirely inaccessible by night, and dangerous at all times. In contemplation of the easier access to Green bay that the present improvement will allow, when completed, vessel owners are calculating upon receiving the freight of Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin entirely at this port, instead of receiving a large portion of it at Milwaukee and Chicago, as at present. In consequence of the crooked channel, and the difficulty and expense of navigating it, it costs from three cents to four cents per bushel more to ship wheat from this port to the same ports eastward.

The Musky Clubs Alliance of Wisconsin is an alliance of about 25 Wisconsin based musky clubs.  One of the main purposes of the Alliance is to provide an organizational framework in which the clubs can share information and work together to improve the musky fishery. The Alliance is made up of a board of directors which includes the President, Vice President, Sectretary, Treasurer, and two co-directors.  There is also one representative and alternate from each member club. There are two main meeting a year, one in the spring (April), and one in the fall (November). The Alliance sponsors two major fund raising events each year to help raise money for the activities of the Alliance and the member clubs.  One fund raiser is the annual boat raffle for a Recon boat & trailer, with a Mercury motor.  The other fund raiser is the annual National Championship Musky Open Tournament held in Eagle River, which is co- sponsored with the Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center.
