Lewes Yacht Club

The Lewes Yacht Club (LYC) was founded in 1932 to encourage water sports, boating, casual sailing, and promote racing competition. The Club is enriched by its history and traditions yet has a casual and relaxed atmosphere. LYC is situated at the mouth of the Delaware Bay, which feeds into the Atlantic Ocean. The Club hosts Sunday races in everything from Sunfish and Mobjacks to Open Bics, Zumas and Optis for junior racers. They also co-host the Annual Cape-to-Cape Challenge Race, between LYC and the Corinthian Yacht Club of Cape May, NJ.

Stories from Lewes Yacht Club

Lewes Yacht Club began as an idea for a sailing association that was proposed to Marjorie Virden by George Davisson. There were 17 charter members, including Richard Reese, Sr., who became the first Commodore. In 1934 membership grew to 82. Dues were $3.00, with a $1.00 initiation fee. Four years later, the first clubhouse was completed on donated land; and was expanded and renovated over the years until March 22, 1962, when a devastating Nor’easter took its toll on the building. Reconstruction the next year began a period of growth for LYC. A marina was built on the canal side in 1969, and in 1982 the Club started their sailing school. Later a pool and shop were built. In 2003, the old clubhouse was demolished to make way for a new, modern facility.

Lewes Yacht Club celebrates 90 years

lewes yacht club membership list

What started as a group of sailors meeting on Lewes Beach for weekend races more than nine decades ago developed into the Lewes Yacht Club, which is celebrating its 90th anniversary this month.

Club members gathered Sept. 24 to celebrate the 90th anniversary. The event was highlighted with attendance by several descendants of the founders and the debut of a 90th anniversary video.

And in a long line of milestones in the history of the club is a project getting underway to renovate and expand the current clubhouse to allow for extra dining area (including more outdoor options), a larger bar area, more storage and a new pool bathhouse. The project will be done over a two-year period in an effort to impact the membership as little as possible.

The idea for a sailing association was presented in August 1932 by George Davisson, Richard Reese Sr. and Marjorie Virden. Davisson and Reese would become the club's first two commodores. A total of 17 charter members started the club and set the dues at $3 a year with a $1 initiation fee.

It took a few years, but LYC was incorporated in July 1937, and the first clubhouse was built in 1938 for $5,000 with donated materials on land given by the City of Lewes.

Today, LYC not only has a clubhouse but a pool and marina, an established summertime youth sailing school and swim team, weekly sailing races, special sailing events, programs for members and guests, a foundation, dinners, a snack bar and youth programs.

And there is that beach access. The club is situated at the site of one of the Lewes Beach crossovers with easy access to Lewes Beach and the Delaware Bay. The view from its large outdoor deck provides one of the best sunset spots in Lewes.

The club has 700 memberships with a waiting list of several years.

Among additions to the club over the years, the pool created the most controversy. Longtime members can recall the division that occurred between those who wanted a pool and those who didn't. It got to a point where some members quit the club. When the pool opened in 1987, it quickly became the most-used amenity at the club, and most of those members who parted ways returned to the fold.

Several key families have played significant roles in the formation and growth of the club, including the Masons, Carters, Marshalls, Millers and Reardons, all familiar names in Lewes.

Although the club has a variety of activities, its roots are in sailing. Over the years, the club has hosted a variety of regattas for all types of sailboats, including Sunfish, Mobjacks, Hobie Cats, Optimists and J-70s, all run by a dedicated race committee.

The annual Breakwater Race each Labor Day is the club’s longest-lasting tradition, having started 90 years ago. In the early days, members had swimming and rowing races to the breakwater as well.

The Cape-to-Cape Regatta, started in 2008, continues each August with racing between Lewes and Cape May, N.J.

Places to see and visit

Almetyevsk situated  on the slopes of Bugulma-Belebey Upland, at the left bank of the Zai river, a tributary of the mighty Kama river. Located 279 km southeast of Kazan and just 13 km east of the Almetyevsk railway station, this city has evolved into a prominent administrative centre within the Almetyevsky district . Recognised as a vital hub for the republic’s oil industry, Almetyevsk is strategically positioned to play a key role in the region’s economic landscape.

Historical Roots: From Tatar Village to City Transformation

Founding and evolution.

Rooted in history, Almetyevsk traces its origins to the 18th century when it was established as a settlement. The transition to city status occurred in 1953, marking a significant milestone in its development. Its historical foundation is linked to the Tatar village of Almetyevo, founded in the 1720s by Tatars migrating from the surrounding regions. Originally known as Almyat-Mullino in 1735, the settlement thrived on crafts, trade, cartage, agriculture, and cattle breeding.

Town Planning and Growth

Before the 19th century, Almetyevsk boasted a town-like structure with a predominantly Muslim spatial arrangement. The village’s nucleus featured a central square, mosque, and market, shaping its unique urban identity. Trade and crafts propelled its growth, laying the groundwork for the bustling city it would become.

Modern Almetyevsk: Oil Industry Hub and Economic Diversification

Oil industry dominance.

Today, Almetyevsk stands as the Republic of Tatarstan’s foremost center for the oil industry. Home to machinery and equipment manufacturers catering to the oil sector and drilling companies, the city plays a pivotal role in the region’s economic landscape. The Druzhba main oil pipeline commences its journey from Almetyevsk, further emphasizing its significance in the energy sector.

Economic Diversity and Industrial Presence

Beyond oil, Almetyevsk hosts diverse economic activities. Light and food industries flourish, featuring enterprises such as a confectionery and pasta factory, dairy and cheese factory, bakery, cannery and distillery, and a hosiery factory. This economic diversification positions Almetyevsk as a developed urban center.

Recreation and Infrastructure: Almetyevsk Beyond Industry

In the city’s outskirts, Almetyevsk offers an array of recreational facilities actively enjoyed by the local population. The “Sabantuy” public and sports complex, encompassing a stadium, hippodrome, and spring complex, exemplifies the city’s commitment to fostering a vibrant and active community.

Blending its historical roots with modern economic prominence, Almetyevsk emerges as a dynamic city on the Bugulma-Belebey Upland.
