Dragons Ready To Race For Kinsale Dragon Gold Cup 2024 Sponsored By Astra Construction Services Ltd

kinsale yacht club news

7 September 2024 – Kinsale, Ireland – Kinsale Yacht Club has thrown open its doors to welcome more than 200 Dragon sailors from around the globe in preparation for the Kinsale Dragon Gold Cup 2024 sponsored by Astra Construction Services Ltd, which gets underway tomorrow, Sunday 8 September.

A post Covid record entry of sixty-two teams from twelve nations and four continents has registered for this very special 80th edition of the Dragon Gold Cup. The fleet includes all the top international teams, plus an exceptionally strong group of all amateur Corinthian crews, who will also be vying for the Corinthian Gold Cup.

Sadly, the weather gods failed to delivery for today’s planned practice race and although the fleet went afloat and Race Officer Con Murphy put his team through their paces mark laying and wind tracking, the breeze failed to build sufficiently and at 14.00 the boats were sent home.

Despite today’s lack of practice the teams are raring to go. 2019 Gold Cup Champion Pedro Andrade summed up the feeling saying, “It’s always good to go out and check the racecourse, and for the race committee to check all their systems and equipment and make sure everything is working so they don’t have any surprises. I love Kinsale and have been here a few times in the past. I sailed an Irish Nationals and a South Coast Championship here with Martin Byrne and Adam Winklemann and I absolutely loved it. The sail out is beautiful, and the racecourse is great. And the hospitality is perfect too, plus it’s exciting to see over 60 boats here.”

Supporting the Race Committee on the Committee Boat will be International Dragon Association’s Championship Coordinator Martin Payne. Looking ahead to tomorrow’s opening race he noted, “Tomorrow the forecast is for a lot of wind and a change of wind direction, so it’s going to be quite exciting. The first race of the Gold Cup has its own special trophy, which was presented in honour of the great Danish Dragon sailor and boatbuilder Borge Borresen, who competed in the Gold Cup an incredible 51 times, winning twice as a helm in 1967 and 1985.”

The Gold Cup is run to a very traditional format, with one race per day scheduled for each of the six days using long windward leeward courses. The time limit for each race is up to five hours, unless it becomes necessary to run two races on a single day to catch up the schedule, in which case the time limit is reduced to three hours per race. There are no discards in the series and with all races to count consistency and good boat preparation are paramount. Racing will run from Sunday 8 to Friday 13 September on an open sea course area set against the spectacular backdrop of the Old Head of Kinsale.

Defending Gold Cup crew Ruairidh Scott will be racing once again with helm Lawrie Smith. Fresh from their recent victories at the Edinburgh Cup (British Championship) and Irish Championship, Ruairidh picked up on the exceptional nature of the Gold Cup, “The Gold Cup is always good fun and this week we’re sailing with Martin Wrigley [a top 470 sailor] who has not done a Gold Cup before, so I’ve been explaining some of the anomalies and intricacies of the length of the of the course and size of it. And that the no discard scoring brings its own challenges. With six long races and no discard you have to think about the racing slightly differently. We’re definitely looking forward to it!”

Alongside the racing, the championship will also feature a superb social programme. Each afternoon long standing Dragon Class sponsor Yanmar will host an Après Sailing Party. The Regatta was formally declared underway at this evening’s Opening Ceremony, hosted at Kinsale Yacht Club and sponsored by Cork County Council. The Opening Ceremony was followed by a Taste of Ireland supper party sponsored by Astra Construction and featuring delicious Irish fare including local oysters, mussels, seafood chowder and Irish Stew, all washed down with Guiness. Later in the week event sponsor Astra Construction will host both a reception at the historic Charles Fort, overlooking the entrance to the harbour, and a Gold Cup Gala Dinner at Acton’s Hotel. The championship will conclude on Friday with the Prize Giving Ceremony.

At the Opening Ceremony, Regatta Chair Maeve Cotter issued a warm welcome to the competitors saying “It’s wonderful to see so many Dragons here in Kinsale, and to welcome teams from across the world. To have such a wide mix of ages and Corinthian and non-Corinthian teams is very special and we’re excited for the week ahead.” She also relayed a personal message from Michael D Higgins, President of Ireland, who asked her to convey his warm regards to Kinsale in hosting this important event for the third time, following previous editions in 1977 and 2012. He expressed his best wishes to all those involved and wished the competitors an enjoyable, memorable and successful week.

The first race is due to get underway at 12.55 tomorrow, Sunday 8 September, and you can follow the latest regatta updates on the event website , Facebook and Instagram pages. Further information about the regatta can be found at www.kyc.ie or by contacting:

VIDEO: Shohei Ohtani starts 50-50 club with 50+ home runs, 50+ stolen bases

Shohei ohtani starts 50-50 club.

Shohei Ohtani becomes the first MLB player to hit 50+ home runs and 50+ stolen bases in a single season.

MIAMI (KTTV) - Shohei Ohtani continues to show the baseball world he is in his own class. The two-way star, who is rehabbing from elbow surgery, became the first player in MLB history to hit at least 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season.

Ohtani created his own "50-50 club" after blasting home run No. 50 in the 7th inning against the Miami Marlins on September 19.

The feat comes days after the Los Angeles Dodgers star cracked the 50-steal mark against the Miami Marlins on September 19.

In addition to starting his solo milestone club, Ohtani officially holds the Dodgers record for most home runs in a single season after passing Shawn Green at 49, set in 2001.

Now, with 50-50 added to his already-impressive resume, which includes winning the American League MVP twice (2021, 2023), winning Silver Slugger twice, being named All-Star four times and winning the American League Rookie of the Year in 2018, Ohtani's focus now shifts to staying healthy and gearing up for the 2024 postseason run.

Now that the Dodgers have punched a ticket to the playoffs, the Japan-born star will play postseason baseball in the United States for the first time.

Ohtani's road to putting together a historical 2024 regular season has not been easy to say the least. Ohtani, the pitcher, is sitting out the entirety of the 2024 MLB regular-season due to the elbow surgery. Off-the-field, baseball's so-called "unicorn" had to adjust to playing for a new team after leaving the Los Angeles Angels , the team he played with for six seasons, and dealing with the attention that came with his longtime close friend and interpreter Ippei Mizuhara admitting to stealing nearly $17 million from Ohtani .

Yacht with 1,000 rounds of ammunition and fireworks burns in Marina del Rey

An investigation is underway at the scene where a luxury yacht went down in flames Wednesday night in Marina del Rey.

Marina del Rey’s harbor produced an unexpected light show Wednesday evening as a luxury yacht loaded with ammunition and fireworks burned for more than two hours before flames were extinguished, authorities said.

Flames leaped 20 to 30 feet from the 100-foot vessel, dubbed the Admiral, while live ammunition rounds could be heard firing from the boat, according to videos from the scene .

Thursday morning, the charred yacht was lying on its side, and the water around it was tinted red from the diesel fuel dumped from the vessel. A Coast Guard spokesperson said an estimated 4,000 gallons of diesel was dumped into the water. The total is not official as monitoring continues.

Los Angeles County Fire Department officials said two passengers aboard the boat exited safely. No information was available about the cause of the blaze.

An L.A. County Fire spokesperson said one individual suffered minor injuries, was treated at the scene and was released.

The boat, traveling at a high speed, crashed into the jetty near its slip, killing a man. It would have been much worse, if not for the quick thinking of a passenger.

Firefighters responded to a call around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and eventually knocked out the flames at 10:33 p.m. The boat was declared fully submerged at 11:33 p.m.

The yacht’s owner, who was not identified, told fire officials that the vessel was carrying 1,000 rounds of ammunition and fireworks.

U.S. Coast Guard personnel confirmed they were on the scene evaluating cleanup options.

The Green Blue Announces Launch of 2024-25 University Sailing Sustainability Challenge with new sponsorship by Royal Thames Yacht Club

The Green Blue's University Sailing Sustainability Challenge Awards

19 th September 2024 – The Green Blue is thrilled to announce the launch of the 2024-25 University Sailing Sustainability Challenge (USSC) , beginning on 1 st September 2024 and running until February 2025.

Since its inception in 2015, the USSC has encouraged University Sailing Clubs (USCs) across the UK to adopt more sustainable practices, and this year marks a significant milestone. The challenge welcomes the Royal Thames Yacht Club as its new sponsor, bringing fresh energy and support to the challenge.

In addition to this new partnership, the 2024-25 Challenge introduces a revamped judging criterion, allowing clubs to be even more creative and flexible in their approach to sustainability.

Supported by the British Universities Sailing Association (BUSA), the USSC was created to help University Sailing Clubs (USCs) across the UK become more sustainable. Clubs participate in the challenge by appointing a Sustainability Officer who in turn will commit to The Green Blue Boating Pledge . They then select areas of focus from eight categories, including reducing waste, protecting biodiversity, and combating climate change.

University Sailing Sustainability Challenge Composite Logos 2024-25

Over the course of the challenge, clubs, and their Sustainability Officers complete tasks within their four chosen categories with the aim of submitting evidence of their work to the USSC judging panel.

An exciting opportunity for clubs and students to really show what they can do; the panel awards all clubs who participate and complete their tasks with an official USSC certificate of achievement. The judging panel also score all submissions with the top four participants being selected to receive a prize at the USSC Awards Ceremony, held during the prestigious RYA Dinghy & Watersports Show in February 2025.

“The younger generation of sailors are the future of the sport and it’s amazing how many of them are passionate about sustainability. By getting involved in the USSC, it’s a great way for individuals and university clubs to not only earn recognition but also set an example for the wider boating community. The work they do can make a real difference in protecting the environment, both in the present and for years to come.” said Kate Fortnam, Campaign Manager at The Green Blue.

Last year an impressive 14 universities successfully completed the Challenge, showcasing their dedication to fostering sustainable values within their clubs. This year, with the support of the Royal Thames Yacht Club, The Green Blue anticipate even greater participation and impact.

“At the Royal Thames Yacht Club, we are committed to the adoption of sustainable practices both within the Club and on the water, and as such are delighted to be supporting the excellent University Sailing Sustainability Challenge. Our young people are the future, and it is critical that future is sustainable. May we thank all participants in this most worthy of causes.” said Richard Powell, Vice Commodore at the Royal Thames Yacht Club.

“We, the university community, benefit hugely from being a part of then the green blue challenge. Through the challenge we push ourselves, our clubs, and the clubs we sail at, to be more sustainable and to look at the ways in which the sailing community can support the protection of our waterways and our planet” said Amelie Sadler, Vice Chair at BUSA – British Universities Sailing Association.

1,000 rounds of ammunition and fireworks were onboard yacht that burned in Marina del Rey: Owner

Sid Garcia Image

MARINA DEL REY, Calif. (KABC) -- The owner of a luxury yacht that erupted in flames and sank in Marina del Rey said 1,000 rounds of "unspent ammunition and fireworks" were onboard the vessel, according to fire officials.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department provided an update on the incident in a social media post Thursday morning.

The fire was reported shortly after 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at 211 Basin A, where flames engulfed the multi-level, 100-foot boat, the agency said.

Residents in the area said they heard multiple explosions resonating throughout the harbor as yacht was consumed by flames. Fire officials said two people were able to get off the boat uninjured.

Fire crews poured water onto the burning vessel, which later sank into the harbor.

kinsale yacht club news

An environmental hazard team was expected to arrive in Marina del Rey Thursday to assist with the cleanup of the burned vessel.

A United States Coast Guard Incident Management Team from Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach is monitoring the cleanup efforts, according to the Coast Guard, which said that the yacht "caught fire and discharged red-dye diesel."

"The fire did not appear to damage any other vessels in the harbor," the USCG said in a statement Thursday. "The Coast Guard is working with Patriot Environmental Services and Clean Harbors organizations to contain and recover the discharge from the yacht."

The yacht's fuel capacity was reported to be 6,000 gallons, according to the Coast Guard. Crews from California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Office of Spill Prevention and Response and the L.A. County Sheriff's Department are also assisting in the efforts.

The Oiled Wildlife Care Network was also notified and was on standby for wildlife response. "No observations of oiled wildlife have been reported at this time," the Coast Guard said Thursday morning. "For your safety and the safety of the animals, do not attempt to capture oiled animals." Witnesses were urged to report oiled wildlife to (877) 823-6926.

History of Tyumen Oblast

People began to explore Western Siberia about 15-20 thousand years ago. Western Siberia was inhabited by the tribes of the Khanty and Mansi (Voguls), Nenets (Samoyed), Selkups (Ostyaks-Samoyeds). At the end of the first millennium AD, the Turkic tribes inhabited the south of the present Tyumen region; later, they formed into an ethnic community of the Siberian Tatars.

In the 13th-16th centuries, Chingi-Tura (Chimgi-Tura), the capital of the Tyumen Khanate of the Tatars and Kereits, was standing on the bank of the Tyumenka River. The khanate was in vassal dependence on the Golden Horde. Around 1500, the ruler of the Tyumen Khanate united the greater part of Western Siberia by creating the Siberian Khanate with the capital in the town of Kashlyk, also known as Sibir and Isker.

The Siberian khans waged numerous wars against the Astrakhan Khanate, the Nogai Horde, raided on Russian territory. In 1563, Kuchum became the khan. He managed to unite the previously hostile Tatar tribes, subordinated the Vogul and Samoyed tribes to his influence.

In order to protect their territories from the Tatars, the Urals merchants and industrialists of Stroganov hired the Cossack detachment headed by Ermak to their service. In 1582, the Cossacks began a campaign against the Siberian Khanate. In the autumn of 1582, there was a decisive battle against the troops headed by Kuchum. In the battle at the Chuvash cape, the khan’s forces were defeated.

More Historical Facts…

The Cossacks’ military campaign in Siberia lasted four years. The main forces of the Siberian Tatars were defeated. Even after the death of Ermak in 1585, the khanate could not gain its former strength. The campaign of Ermak opened the way for the Russian migration to Siberia.

In 1586, the construction of a stockaded settlement began on the Tura River. Later, it became the first Russian town in Siberia - Tyumen. In 1587, the stockaded settlement of Tobolsk was founded, 17 km from the Tatar settlement of Sibir (Kashlyk, Isker) (the capital of the Siberian Khanate). In 1593-1594, the towns of Berezov and Surgut were founded. With the expansion of land routes to Eastern Siberia, more Russian towns were founded. In 1590, Tobolsk became the main center of Siberia.

In the 17th century, Tobolsk and Tyumen, as trade and craft centers, reached the level of the towns of the European part of Russia. Since the end of the 17th century, stone construction began - the first stone buildings beyond the Urals appeared in Tobolsk. The only Kremlin in the eastern part of Russia was built in Tobolsk. In 1708, Tobolsk became the administrative center of the largest province in Russia - Siberian province.

One of the factors that determined the life of Western Siberia was the political exile. In the second quarter of the 19th century, the Decembrists were exiled to Tobolsk gubernia (province). Other representatives of liberation movements of Russia - Radishev, Dostoyevsky, Petrashevsky and a lot of others - also experienced imprisonment in Tobolsk.

In the 18th-19th centuries, Tobolsk was the administrative, cultural and spiritual center of Siberia. Tyumen was a commercial and industrial center. Located at the intersection of trade routes between the West and the East, Tyumen turned into a “gateway to Siberia.” Through Tyumen, the path of settlers from the European part of the Russian Empire passed after the abolition of serfdom and during the Stolypin agrarian reform.

The development of the region intensified during the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway. Several natives of the region became world famous: D.I. Mendeleev (Tobolsk) - one of the greatest chemists and the author of the periodic system, P.P. Ershov (Tobolsk) - a poet, storyteller, author of “The Horse - Hunchback”, G.E. Rasputin (Pokrovskoye village) - the favorite of the last Russian emperor.

In 1917-1918, the family of Nikolai Romanov, the last Russian emperor, was under the arrest in Tobolsk. The town was one of the centers of the largest popular uprising against the Bolsheviks - a peasant uprising in Siberia in 1921-1922. During the Soviet era, the region continued to be a place of exile, part of the Gulag - a system of forced-labor camps.

In the 1920s-1940s, the territory remained mainly agricultural. During the Second World War, a number of industrial enterprises, scientific institutions, ministries, and departments were evacuated to this region. Since the summer of 1941, the body of V.I. Lenin was kept in Tyumen. August 14, 1944, Tyumen oblast with a center in Tyumen was formed, the region also included the Khanty-Mansi and Yamal-Nenets districts.

In 1964, a new page in the history of the Tyumen region began. The discovery of significant oil and natural gas deposits became the basis for the creation of one of the world’s largest oil and gas complexes. The development of oil and gas fields radically changed life in the Tyumen region. Several new towns founded: Novy Urengoy, Nadym, Noyabrsk, and others.

In record time, the Tyumen region became the country’s main oil and gas power base. By the end of the 1980s, the region annually produced about 400 million tons of oil and 574.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas. The development of the natural resources of Tyumen oblast became a matter of the whole country. The population increased tenfold.

Tyumen Oblast - Features

Tyumen Oblast is the only region of Russia that extends (together with autonomous okrugs) from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the state border in the south making it the third largest province of Russia after Yakutia and Krasnoyarsk krai.

The Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug - Yugra is the main oil and gas bearing region of Russia and one of the largest oil producing regions in the world.

The Tyumen region is located in the southwestern part of the West Siberian lowland plain and divides Russia into two large parts: to the west - the Urals and the European part of the country, to the east - the Asian part: Siberia and the Far East.

The climate is arctic and subarctic in the north, temperate - in the center and in the south. The average temperature in January ranges from minus 17 degrees Celsius in Tyumen to minus 27 degrees Celsius in the north.

The largest rivers of the region, the Ob and the Irtysh, are navigable. In total, there are about 70 thousand lakes. Most of the territory is covered with forests.

The bulk of the country’s proven oil and gas reserves are concentrated in the autonomous okrugs of Tyumen Oblast. Peat, quartz sands and limestone are also extracted. Natural ore deposits and precious stones are found on the eastern slope of the Urals, near the Arctic Circle.

Tyumen Oblast - Economy

In terms of industrial output, the Tyumen region ranks first in Russia. The main branch of specialization is the fuel industry, which accounts for more than 80% of the region’s industrial output. The Tobolsk petrochemical plant is the largest in Russia. Timber cutting and wood processing industries are also developed.

The region is characterized by harsh natural and climatic conditions, 90% of the territory is classified as or equivalent to the regions of the Far North. Only 3% of the region’s territory is occupied by agricultural land.

More favorable climatic conditions of the south allow to grow grain, potatoes, vegetables, coarse and juicy forages, the presence of large areas of hayfields and pastures creates favorable conditions for dairy and meat cattle breeding. About 80% of the region’s agricultural output is produced here.

Reindeer herding and fishing are the traditional occupation of the indigenous peoples of the North.
