While we were visiting the Royal Victoria Yacht Club (RVYC) in Victoria, BC, this summer we got a chance to see some of their junior sailing programs in action. One thing that was really, REALLY impressive was the one where they can start the kids at 4 years old. For some kids that is about the time they get their first tricycle! But here they are out sailing double-handed in a dinghy. The next step is sailing solo. The more advanced kids get trained in racing and the video shows one of the exercises in action on the hard. The instructor critiques their progress and times them with a stopwatch and records their times. A scan of some of the fleet of boats shows why the RVYC has a lot of good sailors. Here is a link to the video: https://vimeo.com/74023075

Thanks for that, John. The benefits to kids learning to sail is more than many people realize. Maybe others know of Jr sailing programs in their area they'd like to promote.

Love to see that, we have a growing junior and beginner program at the SYC, thanks to an Olympic legacy donation of 2 420 advanced trainers and 2 similar trainers thanks to the WVYC, as well as some donated Opti's. Our training program is set to expand next season and our club will host more racing events. These kids have a great time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUyrB1hX088

I was the junior sail director at the Whitby Yacht Club on Lake Ontario years ago. All junior sail programs deserve and need the support of the senior members of yacht clubs. They are the future of our sport. We had 120 kids come through the program one summer and all had a positive experience and we held an awards night for them as well. From Optimists to Lasers to Laser 2's to 470's and 420's they all have fun.

I am lucky to be included in a fledgling program being started in SE Wisconsin by a physics teacher at one of the Charter High Schools. Mr. Tim Overocker (the aformentioned teacher) has started a sailing team at Lakeview Tech HS (my son attends there, which is how I've gotten involved) and is also working with Harborside Charter HS, both in Kenosha. From what I understand, they are trying to interest high schools all along L. Michigan. He has gotten support from the Kenosha Yacht Club, too. A real grass roots effort. Mr. O, as the kids call him (and his wife Mrs. O, who is also a qualified sailor) is seeing growth he really deserves recognition for his work!

Our club in Wichita (Ninnescah YC) has made a commitment to encourage the children of both members and non-members to enroll in both classes and camps that our club operates all summer. The club makes the boats available and the club provides certified instructors who with adult help and parental supervision make the program such a success that the parents I've spoken with believe it changes the lives of their children....The membership is proud of the Junior Sailing Program. It is important to include our youth in learning the many joys of all aspects of sailing. From competition to gunk holing it is a life-long past time we all can enjoy from our child hood to our second child hood. For my part, as I am not involved in any formal children's sailing programs, I take my grand kids and the kids of my neighbors out for time spent on the water learning the "ropes" of our sport. Of course I passed along my love for the sport to my son and my step son and, frankly, that time spent with the "kids" was and is one of my most rewarding spent at the helm of the boat and the helm of being a parent.

These programs are fantastic , my 14 year old son has been in the program at Sidney North Saanich Yacht Club for about 5-6 years now and has grown to love the sport. He is also now racing on keel boats on the weekends when not dingy sailing. This has also grown to schools such Parkland Senior Secondary having a Sailing academy where they sail twice a week and learn other aspects of boating / sailing when they can't be on the water. Many of the kids that go through these programs end up teaching in the summer courses and passing on the knowledge that they have learned.

This is just fantastic! Great video, too! I love the little voice in the background, "Is anybody worried about anything?" Another voice, "I hurt my head." I can't get over the fact that some of these kids are only four years old! Wish I'd learned about sailing 54 years earlier!!

Our yacht club, Meydenbauer Bay Yacht Club, Bellevue, WA on Lake Washington, has been training kids 8-18 years for 17 years. We started small and have grown to a fleet of 22 sailboats and 6 inflatibles. We have Opti's, V15's, Lasers, and 2 - 29ers. We train about 250 kids every summer and some have become our instructors. We also have a racing team which participates in a number of Northwest races. We host one race at our Club every summer for the other sailing programs in the area. We started the program with donated boats and volunteers from the Club and we are now self-sustaining with a regular boat replacement program. We continue to do our part to bring new sailors into the world and it gives us pleasure to see them move on to racing, cruising, and boat ownership.

Our sailing association partners with the city to provide a week long sail camp. They have space for about 15 kids and sessions are usually full through the summer. Here are a couple of great kids, talking about it .

Hartwarming Posts It's really heartwarming to read the posts about the clubs that are helping the kids to have a good time learning to sail. People are donating their time, money, and facilities to make this happen are to be commended for their efforts. Jackdaw: What the Wayzata Yacht Club on Lake Minnetonka did to create a sailing center next to the yacht club is outstanding, a regular sailing mecca. And to generate so many boats for the Wednesday night races is also awesome. As for the links above, the one by Stretch with the on-water shots and the other by by Indysailor with the interview both give me ideas for additional video work next year. A few years ago the Poulsbo Yacht Club (PYC) got its Jr Sailing program started with a gift of 10 Opti boats by one of the members. Since then many more boats have been added including other class boats. There is a core of high school aged sailors now who came up through the ranks, as it were, and are doing well in local competition. One project on my to-do list is to make a video of how to use the our PYC portable pump out. Oh yes, really exciting, tell me about it, but its important to know the proper way to use this all important piece of equipment. Last but not least, I want to ad a "Thank You" to Greg Delezynski for his post about his electric outboard motor test. His video was the spark that got me to post the RVYC video. Link to Greg's post and his video: http://forums.sbo.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?p=1068673&highlight=electric outboard test I'm always open for more ideas that can be used to turn into boating videos.

Our basic session is a two or three hour introduction to sailing, in a fun and safe way. We're very open to creating a program which suits your needs. Costs start at $20 per student per session.

We also have a wonderful School Sailing League which runs April to June. Check out our program guide here for more information.

Sailing Team Information

The RVYC Sailing Team is an opportunity for the growth and development of sailing and racing skills in a co-operative and supportive environment. RVYC athletes become ambassadors for our club and forge lifelong friendships through the social network of the Sailing Team.

At the helm of the RVYC Sailing Program is our award winning Coach and Sailing Program Coordinator, Stephen McBride. Stephen is assisted by Sail Canada competitive development coaches Hannah Stevens and Fraser Smith with high standards of safety and skill in teaching sailing and racing. Below is a description of each of the teams that make up the RVYC Racing Program.

Our youngest members enter the Optimist Sailing Team. Opti Team members are aged 15 and under. Typically sailors start at age 8. The Senior Sailing Team sails double-handed in 420, 29er and 49er's and the single-handed Laser or Laser Radial. The transition occurs around age 15 when the athlete weighs 120-130lbs and has the appropriate height for the boats.

The Sailing Team runs three sessions per year: January to March, April to June and September to November. Specific dates will be updated for the following session. Please contact us for the current training schedule at [email protected]

Download a copy of the RVYC Sailing Team Athlete Parent Handbook here.

REGISTER Sailing Team Cancellation Policy:

A cancellation fee of $50 plus less any time spent training will be charged to all cancelled registrations.

The Opti and Senior Sailing Teams participate in a variety of Local, Provincial, National and International events. The team participates in many of the events on the BC Circuit as well as  the Island Circuit. For information about dates and locations of various events please check out www.bcsailing.bc.ca and www.sailing.ca , or talk with your coach.

At Home Regattas

Sailing Team members are encouraged to participate in Home Regattas. Online registration can be found through the Royal Victoria Yacht Club website. The Notice of Race (NOR) is posted on the RVYC website which outlines the times, costs and meals. There is often an early bird deadline, which allows some cost savings.

If space permits, families are encouraged to billet sailors traveling from out of town. This helps build inter club and team relationships which makes it easier to find places to billet when the team heads to an away regatta. Please contact [email protected] if you are able to billet sailors for an upcoming regatta.

Away Regattas

The privilege to travel to an away regatta is always at the coach’s discretion. It is important to communicate with your coach regarding your preparedness. Opti Sailing Team members are generally expected to travel with a parent due to their age. Volunteer parents are always needed to make this traveling possible.

The Notice of Race (NOR) will be posted on the website of the hosting yacht club giving all the details for the racing, cost and meals. Registration procedures vary, but are often online.

Sailing Team procedures involve telling the coach you are planning to attend well in advance so that trailer space, drivers and rides and billeting or accommodation details can be arranged ahead of time.

Athletes and parents load trailers during Wednesday and Thursday practices. Athletes are responsible for making certain their own gear is loaded. Know the departure date and make sure you know when your ride is leaving. It is important to contact your ride directly so everyone is in the know. It is recommended to bring $25 per day for food on the ferry and incidentals. Cell phones make contacting your child easy while they are away although they do not always respond; keep trying. Please be assured that you will be contacted immediately if there is an emergency.  Athletes need to inquire when the trailers are being unloaded and show up to assist in the process. Typically on the Tuesday after the event. Loading and unloading trailers is a group activity.

Sailing Team travel costs (transporting boats and athletes, and accommodation costs) to these regattas are billed to the participants on a per person basis. Parents who are incurring costs from towing and driving athletes need to fill in an Expense Claim Form-Reimbursement Form . It is important to state on the form whom you drove for billing purposes.  Please submit your forms to the Head Coach within three weeks of the event so we can bill the expenses appropriately.

Any special circumstances for your child needs to be discussed with the coach well ahead of time. Please keep medical information current.

Regatta Funding

Funding information.

Royal Victoria Yacht Club maintains four Racing Funds: a) Junior Development Fund b) Intermediate Racing Fund c) Olympic/Paralympic Fund  d) National/International Racing Fund (Discretionary fund via RFC) The RVYC Annual outlines the administration, disbursement, and principles of the Racing Funds. It contains specific information about each fund and should be referenced by each applicant. The rules surrounding the funds are as outlined in the RVYC Annual, plus these instructions and guidelines outlined below.  The Racing Funds Committee also administers the Wall of Excellence; see the RVYC Annual for details.

Introduction

These Funds are in place to provide opportunities for RVYC members to attain their highest goals in the competitive sailing. The approval for disbursement of these funds must follow a set of rules to ensure fairness for all and respect for the generosity of the club and its members. The purpose of these Funds is to promote participation by members of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club in National and International yachting events, or their qualifiers, and to financially assist such endeavours. The funds do not support local regattas such as most of the BC Circuit events and “local” events in neighbouring regions. To qualify the event must incorporate a spirit of higher performance or regional /national / international competition.   The Intermediate Fund is meant to assist “bridging the gap” between youth sailing and higher pursuits such as appropriate World Championships and International Games such as the Olympic Games.  Pursuits focused on a single event are better funded through the National / International Racing Fund. In this case, a team should submit a letter of application to the Chair of the Racing Funds Committee providing details of the event and the funds requested.  This should be done as early as possible in the fiscal year.  The process and forms described below are not used for the National / International Fund.  An important consideration for funding is how you represent your club. The expectation is that you will put forward your best effort to attain your goals. This includes being committed to pursuing sailing as an elite athlete, planning your events, training hard, planning your travel and accommodations appropriately and conducting yourself as an ambassador of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club. Failing to represent the club appropriately can result in the forfeiture of funding. The Racing Funds Committee, as outlined in the Annual, administers all racing funds. This committee reviews the applications for funding and decide what level of funding will be awarded. The Racing Funds Committee meets twice a year, as a minimum. The Spring meeting is to meet applicants, review applications and determine budget estimates. The Fall meeting is to review applicants actual expenses, review results, and issue funding.  The year for funding purposes runs October 1st – September 30th of the following year. This follows the club’s financial year and can be challenging if one or more events fall in the subsequent funding period.

Approved Expenses

Process for application for funding.

***Funding Spreadsheet is available from the Sailing Office.  It should be used and submitted in an editable format for the committee to compile the data.

For the Spring

1. Use the provided funding spreadsheet and customize it to your event schedule. 2. Estimate your amounts of approved expenses. Use the Funding Spreadsheet. (Ensure name, member number, class and estimated costs for each event are filled out) 3. Write a cover letter giving an outline of your goals, training plan including fitness. 4. Submit  the above documents to the Sailing Office one week before the Spring meeting, each year (Date announced each winter.) 5. Attend the spring meeting to introduce yourself and outline your plans.

For the Fall

1. Keep all receipts except for per diem expenses i.e. food as you attend events. 2. In September, complete Funding Spreadsheet with name and year and actual costs and submit electronically in a editable format. Attach/submit receipts physically or electronically (preferred). 3. Write a cover letter outlining your results during the season. 4. Submit the actual costs documents to the Sailing Office. Due September 15th annually.

Post Funding Received

1. Write a thank you letter to the Club, Attention: Chair of the Racing Funds Committee. How much Funding can I expect? 1. RVYC will not fund all of your costs. The Funds provide a percentage of approved expenses based on the current available monies. 2. It is expected that the athlete will cover his or her costs up front and then be reimbursed by the Fund. 3. The Club endeavours to send reimbursement cheques by the end of the club's fiscal year, September 30th or as close to that date as possible.

Provides a lifelong foundation and respect for the sea.

I appreciate the emphasis on safety and how the instructors took their time to make sure everything was understood.

Great program.

royal victoria yacht club summer camp

The school sailing programs here were lots of fun and I learned a lot. Safety was always a priority and they had great teachers. They provided every opportunity for us to improve our sailing skills and let us try new stuff. It's been 4 years since my participation, but when I was there I never felt like I was wasting my time.

Last summer I brought my four year old son for Wet Feet and he had an absolute blast. The staff at Royal Vic were so great with him and made him feel completely comfortable on the water. They are enthusiastic, professional and confident and can really blend fun and safety seamlessly. This summer we'll be back with all the neighborhood friends and cousins!

Our Philosophy

Adventurous, inclusive and quality programs for the community. We value sportsmanship, excellence and sailing for life.

Learning Opportunities

Learn to sail programs are offered for adults and children in a fun, safe, and positive learning environment. We offer CANSail courses for kids as young as 4 years old, with our Optimist Wet Feet program, and those young at heart, with our Adult Learn to Sail programs including our Salty Sisters for ladies 18+. Our courses introduce basic sailing and racing skills, develop existing skills, provides advanced training, and improve confidence, all while having fun and enjoying the beautiful Cadboro Bay and Oak Bay. The Instructional Sailing program is available to both members and the public.

Our sailing staff are all certified Sail Canada instructors with extensive on water rescue and first aid training to ensure a safe and positive learning and training environment. All participate actively in the sport of sailing and include local and elite athletes.
