Two people were injured Wednesday afternoon after a boat exploded while it was being refueled at a marina in Old Bridge, investigators said.

Local police, the U.S. Coast Guard and marine units from the New York City Police and Fire Department were called to the Raritan Marina located at 1707 Route 35 in the Laurence Harbor section of town to investigate the explosion around 3:20 p.m., authorities said.

An explosion aboard the 32-foot cuddy-cabin boat caused a 57-year-old Bridge man to be launched into the water, according to a statement from the Old Bridge Police Department. The man was then pulled out by bystanders.

He sustained burns to his face and legs and was airlifted to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for treatment, police said.

His condition as of 8:30 p.m was unclear.

A 47-year old South Amboy man suffered blast injuries from glass to his stomach and arms and he was transported to Bayshore Medical Center, the department said.

The fire was extinguished around 7:30 p.m. and the Coast Guard said it was on scene conducting pollution assessments.

The cause of the explosion was still under investigation and the marina was closed as a result.

Anyone with more information was asked to contact the Old Bridge Police Department at 732-721-5600.

Long Branch's piers a huge part of town's history and identity

Portrait of Dan Radel

LONG BRANCH ‑ Robber barons. Nor'easters. A tug boat collision. A tragic fire. The city has seen it all out on its piers.

And as it prepares to build its sixth ocean pier, historian Greg Kelly will close out the summer at the Arts & Cultural Center with a lecture on the legacy of the piers of yesteryear this Thursday evening.

It's a story that begins with the Bath House Pier, which went up in 1828 near Bath Avenue. That pier was used as a dock by steamboats from New York City. It lasted 26 years before it was leveled in a November nor'easter in 1854.

Coincidentally, that was the same storm t hat claimed the New Era , a clipper ship that was carrying 400 passengers of mostly German descent. One hundred fifty of them perished when the ship ran aground on a desolate stretch of sand that was then called Deal Beach but today is Asbury Park.

“As we look back at the piers that shaped Long Branch, and we look forward to the exciting developments ahead, this event serves as a meaningful way to come together and pay tribute to the end of another great summer," Long Branch mayor John Pallone said.

Pallone said the piers have been an integral part of the city's identity. As each pier was constructed, and later replaced, they shifted in purpose from maritime commerce to summer tourism and beach culture. They've each left behind stories, no matter how briefly they stood, like the East End Excursion Pier, which flopped in a storm one week after being built in 1872, according to Asbury Park Press archives.

That pier was financed by a pair of well-known robber barons of the Gilded Age, Jim Fisk and Jay Gould.

A third pier was begun in 1878 but just two years after being completed it too was washed away in an 1881 storm. After that came the Iron Pier, for its angular iron pieces. Locally, it was also known as Herman's Pier, after its superintendent.

More maritime calamities followed as a tugboat struck that one, cutting it in half, according to the Press' archives. The pier lasted another 10 years when it was torn down in 1908 and replaced in 1912 with the fifth pier, which stood until a fire burned it in down in 1987.

For the last 37 years, the city's beachfront has been pier-less. However, this year the city received a $3.25 million grant from the state’s Boardwalk Preservation Fund and $5 million in Coronavirus State Fiscal Recovery funds to build a new pier at Laird Street. This one will be 500 feet long. The city said the pier will finished by the end of 2026.

This Meadowlands boat tour is a 'wow factory,' with great views of NJ marsh wildlife

3-minute read.

Showing people what she called the “wow factory” — the natural wonders that exist in New Jersey's own backyard — is what Gabrielle Bennett-Meany and her colleagues at the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority hope to do.

Bennett-Meany serves as the authority's manager of parks, trails and open space and is one of the guides for its free boat tours, which offer visitors close-up access to the Meadowlands' natural wonders.

“When you’re on the highway, sometimes you don’t even know what’s down here,” Bennett-Meany said. “They say, ‘This is amazing. Who knew? I drive over Route 3 every day,’ or ‘I drive on the turnpike every day.’”

With 30 years’ experience in the Meadowlands, she brings an enthusiasm and insight to the experience, providing context about the region as well as the wildlife glimpsed along the way.

When do the Meadowlands tours run?

The authority runs tours weekly throughout the spring and summer, and those looking for a last dose of sunshine can still find a chance through the end of September. There are also walking trails in the Meadowlands region that are open all year round for visitors.

But the boats may be the crown jewel of the operation.

Boat tours that can accommodate about 14 people are led by veteran guides who bring decades of experience studying the wildlife and ecosystem of a vast and still largely overlooked area.

Bennett-Meany called the region the “best-kept secret” and said sometimes that’s for the best, because the makeup of the riverbed can be tricky to navigate, especially for people without experience.

The return of the osprey and the presence of bald eagles have garnered attention in the past, but the difference between hearing a story and seeing it in person can be astounding. And then there’s the peregrine falcon. The fastest animal on the planet — with flight speeds topping 200 miles per hour — can be found nestled into the underside of a bridge along Route 3.

Things like that provide context to visitors.

The marshlands are home to plenty of ducks and seagulls that can be found throughout the region, but watching a flock of cormorants take flight as the boat comes into the dock is a difference maker. It’s something unique — but with American Dream and MetLife Stadium, soon to host the 2026 World Cup, still in view, it's quintessentially Jersey.

The boat tours run along the Hackensack River and into the nearby tributaries and marshes, depending on tides and wildlife.

Bennett-Meany likes to start each tour with a little context about the river and how it works, running from the mountains of upstate New York into New Jersey before meeting the Passaic River and running into the Newark Bay. As a tidal river, it sees fluctuations in the water level, which the tours take into account.

“People live in our communities and are sort of separated from our natural areas, but once we begin to realize that our community is part of these natural areas,” she said, “it makes us think about what we’re doing in our hometown, how we’re connected to the environment and why many, many of these environments are very important.”

Word Cup 2026: NJSEA approves additional $13 million for work on MetLife Stadium

From where do the Meadowlands tour boats launch?

Boats launch from River Barge Park Marina in Carlstadt and venture up and down the river for about two hours. The marina’s manager, Angelo Urato, has watched the agency and the area evolve during 40 years of service.

He said that at low tide, the animals tend to be more active and visitors have a better shot at seeing a variety of species.

Bennett-Meany said having a harbor seal turn up about a decade ago was exciting, but the highlight for her has been the return of the ospreys.

She explained that decades ago, before the Clean Water Act set parameters on pollution, it was common to dump waste in the river, and the water quality was poor.

But wetlands protection efforts led to the rebirth of the area, and as species of fish and birds started to come back, so did the bigger birds that feed on them.

Enter the osprey. About 15 years ago, an osprey turned up. It nested and had young but ultimately failed. A year or two later, they came back and nested, and now they are a constant.

“It’s my favorite resurgence story,” she said.

Although the boating season is coming to an end, the Meadowlands Birding Festival will take place on Oct. 6 and will feature bird walks, talks and other activities at DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst.

U.S. Department of Education

U.S. Department of Education Announces Schedule and New Process to Launch 2025-26 FAFSA Form

The U.S. Department of Education (Department) today announced that the 2025-26 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA® form) will be launched through a new process. Starting on October 1, the Department will release the 2025-26 FAFSA form for testing with a limited set of students and institutions. The Department will make the application available to all students on or before December 1. This process is informed by conversations and feedback from thousands of students, institutions, and other stakeholders.

The Department will invite volunteers to participate in the testing period, and over time will make the form available to an increasing number of participants, starting with hundreds and expanding to tens of thousands of applicants. This process will allow the Department to test and resolve issues before making the form available to all students and contributors. Using this approach, the Department will launch full functionality, including submission and back-end processing at the same time.

“Following a challenging 2024-25 FAFSA cycle, the Department listened carefully to the input of students, families, and higher education institutions, made substantial changes to leadership and operations at Federal Student Aid, and is taking a new approach this year that will significantly improve the FAFSA experience,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “Thanks to the partnership of our stakeholders, we’ve developed a better implementation process for 2025-26. I look forward to continuing to work with our partners to ensure this school year’s FAFSA implementation better serves our nation’s students.”

The goal of the phased rollout of the 2025-26 FAFSA form, consistent with software industry best-practices, is to work with limited groups of users to identify and resolve the kind of system errors that can derail millions of students and contributors and thousands of colleges. A phased rollout will also allow the Department to incorporate user feedback to ensure the application’s instructions are clear and easy-to-use for students and contributors and provide resources for the community that supports students and families.

Thanks to investments through the FAFSA Student Support Strategy and the partnership of community and stakeholders, student application success rates have significantly increased over the past six months, with the submission gap from the prior year falling from roughly 40% in March to under 4%, as of today.

"We've heard from students, families, higher education professionals and other stakeholders loud and clear: They want a better, simpler FAFSA process, and they want to know when they can reliably expect it," said FAFSA Executive Advisor Jeremy Singer. "In close collaboration with partners, FSA is confident we will deliver not only a better product, but also a smoother process than last year. One that makes higher education more accessible and within reach for more Americans."

Throughout the testing period, the Department will share regular updates with students, families and a broad range of community stakeholders to make sure they clearly understand our progress. This will also boost confidence among students and families, institutions, state agencies, and other partners and stakeholders.

Moreover, the Department will continue to seek feedback from our partners through August listening sessions and a new formal request for information that will be released next week. The Department will publish more about what it has learned through these engagements, including releasing a new roadmap with additional tools for students and families, counselors, institutions and other partners planning for a successful 2025-26 FAFSA season.

In the coming weeks, the Department will release more information about how this testing period will work. Our top priority is ensuring students have access to the maximum federal financial aid possible to reach their education goals, and we are working tirelessly to ensure students and our partners have a smooth experience with the 2025-26 FAFSA form.

Trump Makes Incendiary Claim About His Secret Service Protection

The former president accused the president and vice president of denying him sufficient Secret Service protection, echoing remarks he made on social media in July.

Donald J. Trump’s face is framed in front of white stars on blue background.

  • Aug. 28, 2024

Former President Donald J. Trump claimed without evidence in an interview broadcast on Tuesday that President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris had denied him sufficient Secret Service protection and that they were therefore partly responsible for the assassination attempt against him last month.

“Our people were always fighting to get more security, more Secret Service, and he knew that we didn’t have enough,” Mr. Trump said of Mr. Biden during an interview with the television host Phil McGraw, known as Dr. Phil. “I think to a certain extent it’s Biden’s fault and Harris’s fault. And I’m the opponent. Look, they were weaponizing government against me. They brought in the whole D.O.J. to try and get me. They weren’t too interested in my health and safety.”

The Secret Service has been under a cloud since July 13, when the gunman was able to fire , unimpeded, on Mr. Trump at an outdoor campaign rally in Butler, Pa. The attack grazed Mr. Trump’s ear, killed a spectator and seriously wounded two others. The F.B.I. is investigating, and congressional leaders have also opened inquiries. But there is no evidence that Mr. Biden or Ms. Harris knew about any deficiencies in Mr. Trump’s protection.

The Secret Service has taken responsibility for the security lapses that made the shooting possible. Kimberly A. Cheatle resigned as the agency’s director and has been replaced.

The former president’s remarks to Dr. Phil were similar to what Mr. Trump had written in a social media post in July , when he blamed Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris for the shooting and said they had failed to protect him.

Mr. Trump on Tuesday also echoed an accusation that some of his allies — including Senator JD Vance of Ohio, now his running mate — made right after the assassination attempt: that Democrats’ criticism of him, and descriptions of him as a threat to democracy, might have incited the gunman. Investigators have not confirmed the gunman’s motive.

That assertion by Mr. Trump came after Dr. Phil, referring to Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris, asked, “I’m not saying that they wanted you to get shot, but do you think it was OK with them if you did?”

“They’re saying I’m a threat to democracy. No, they’re a threat,” Mr. Trump replied. “They would say that. That was a standard line, just keep saying it, and you know that can get assassins or potential assassins going.” He added, “Maybe that bullet is because of their rhetoric.”

Mr. Biden, who did campaign against Mr. Trump as a threat to democracy , called for the nation to “lower the temperature in our politics” after the assassination attempt and condemned it.

Mr. Trump has a history of violent speech dating back to his 2016 campaign, when he suggested he might pay the legal fees of a supporter who was accused of attacking a protester, and said of Hillary Clinton : “If she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the Second Amendment people — maybe there is, I don’t know.” More recently, he has suggested that shoplifters should be shot and embraced the rioters who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. He has also described the outcome of a Democratic victory in apocalyptic terms.

In the interview with Dr. Phil, which ran for about an hour, Mr. Trump also repeated his complaints about Ms. Harris replacing Mr. Biden as the Democratic nominee.

“In politics, you have an opponent and you win or you lose,” he said. “But you don’t have an opponent, and then you’re doing well against the opponent, they take him out, they give you a new opponent. They give you a nice fresh opponent.”

And he expanded his false claims about voter fraud, saying he believed he had won California — one of the most Democratic states in the country, which voted for Mr. Biden in 2020 by nearly 30 percentage points.

“If Jesus came down and was the vote counter, I would win California,” he said. “If we had an honest vote counter, I would win California.”

Best Marine and Boating Navigation Apps

Table of Contents

Last Updated on May 19, 2024 by Boatsetter Team

For almost everything you do today, there’s an app that will support, enhance or complement that activity. Recreational boating is no exception, and there are dozens of boating apps to help you enjoy time on the water.

Arguably, marine navigation apps are some of the most common—and the most useful—available to boaters today, with a range of options to suit different needs. Some boat GPS apps, for example, utilize NOAA raster charts, which are essentially scanned paper charts incorporated into their systems. Some apps offer vector charts, providing electronic charts that allow for scrolling and zooming in for enhanced detail.

The convenience of downloading these apps to your iPhone, Android, or tablet enables you to have them readily available regardless of the boat you’re on,  significantly enhancing your navigational capabilities.

Best marine navigation apps ( with GPS )

These are our top recommendations for boating apps that are great for marine navigation and offer GPS. Most of the apps are free to try.

1. Navionics

navionics boating app

A perennial favorite is Navionics because it’s easy to use and comprehensive in scope. Navionics mimics a standard chartplotter experience and in some cases can connect to an onboard plotter via WiFi. Creating waypoints and routes, measuring distances and understanding depth contours and aids to navigation is pretty straight forward with this app.

Once downloaded, the charts stay on your device and can be used offline which is great when you’re cruising in areas with little coverage. Bonus functionality includes weather and tide information and dock-to-dock routing that helps you set a viable course based on your vessel’s parameters like draft.

  • Price: Two-week free trial, then subscriptions starting at $14.99
  • Click here to learn more and download.
  • Get the app from Google Play Store or iOS store

iNavX marine navigation

Easy to confuse with Navionics (especially when downloading the app), iNavX is a whole different animal. There’s a $5 charge to download the app, and then you can download NOAA raster charts for free and vector charts (powered by Navionics and C-MAP) for a fee.

Beyond navigation, details on marinas, fuel docks and other facilities are also available. Weather data overlays and additional features like engine data and AIS collision avoidance information can also be viewed, but the app can get technical in a hurry and may take longer to learn.

  • Price: $4.99, plus an annual subscription

c-map boat gps app

C-MAP is the primary other choice besides Navionics for the underlying charting information that many apps use with their own user interface. The new C-MAP Embark was designed to be intuitive so after a few minutes, you won’t really be looking for the manual to manage the basics like waypoints, routes and nav aids.

A funky feature includes the app changing color based on your environment, so the charts are always easy to read regardless of the surrounding light. The basics include a free download, but chart additions and weather data will be in-app purchases.

  • Price: Free, with available in-app purchases

4. SeaPilot

seapilot app

SeaPilot sets an ambitious agenda for itself: it’s a basic navigation app (which has a free three-day trial) but it ramps up from there. You’ll need to upgrade to the premium version so you can add various chart areas, weather forecasting and routing capabilities. Beyond that, you can connect to Facebook to find nearby boating friends.

For sailors, there’s a database of polar diagrams which are graphs of the theoretical top speeds attainable by over 300 kinds of sailboats.

  • Price: Three-day free trial, then starting at $7.99

5. i Sail GPS:NOAA USA Charts

i sail gps boat app

For barebones basics, iSail is a great choice because it’s inexpensive and you can skip sign-ups and pop-ups. Measure distances to your waypoint, upload waypoints and routes and get quick ETAs to your next intermediate or final point.

iSail uses NOAA raster charts which are downloaded to the device so they can be used without Wi-Fi or out of cell range. There are few advanced features, but this app gets the job done when you need the basics. It’s for iOS only.

  • Price: $7.99, with available in-app purchases

6. KnowWake

knowwake boating app

The best way to describe KnowWake is to compare it to a road-based app you’re probably already familiar with–Waze. Like Waze, KnowWake is crowd-source and will provide information on congested waterfront locations–coastal and on 350 inland waterways.

sailboat navigation app

On a bustling weekend, you can see how busy marinas, restaurants, boat ramps, fuel docks, and dive and snorkel sites are. You can use it in North America, on the Great Loop and in Canada as well as in parts of the Caribbean. The app uses real-time updates and it has location-sharing between users so you can find friends.

  • Price: Free!

All the boating apps above vary in price, complexity and focus, and although some are free, advanced features generally come at a price. Some take a bit of time to learn, but they’ll all put some peace-of-mind in your pocket the next time you slip the dock lines.

Bonus Apps: Boatsetter

boatsetter apps

Did you know Boatsetter has an app? Make that two! We’re proud to offer the largest peer-to-peer boat rental app that connects boat owners and boat renters, so you can get on the water without committing to boat ownership. Rent one of over 17,000 boats in 600 locations. Boatsetter isn’t the only private boat rental app , but it offers an exclusive partnership with BoatUS and Geico for insurance.

  • Price: Free! (Boat owners should also check out our Boatsetter Owner’s app , perfect for stress-free boat rental management and easy communication with renters).
  • Click here to download for iOS ; or click here to download for Android .

RAD NAV APP

I use Savvy Navvy daily for all my inshore fishing here in south Texas. Great for current conditions, including tides and wind direction. It’s like Google maps for boaters. Plan routes, mark your fishing spots and return to the dock in one piece. Every time! Great App 5 stars.

2 weeks ago during the heatwave, we were on the Solent and the temperature fried all our instruments including the GPS plotter. Thank god we had Savvy Navvy as it worked perfectly for the entire weekend and allowed us to do everything we wanted. People say these kind of apps aren’t meant to replace the instruments on board, well I can confirm that when they instruments on board all fail, this was an absolute lifesaver. Can’t wait to test it in other countries.

Great and simple to use

I sail with friends and families and this app is a great way to illustrate “dads” boring chart work through a much more teenage friendly platform. I use both for cross reference and find it pretty accurate. Considering the price of charts it is extremely good value.

Ratings and Reviews

5.4K Ratings

The first time I used this app was on a trip to key west and our first time boating there. The app was extremely accurate and provided great detail. It even showed some sunken boats in the area that were very small but great for snorkeling. When I showed the map to the man at the boat rental company and asked him what he could tell us about these boats He asked me what app that was as he had never seen one with such great detail and didn’t know of 4 of the 6 boats listed. We snorkeled 3 of them and reported back to him how great they were so he could recommend them to future customers. This summer I will be using the app in The Thousand Islands Region of NY. Great APP

What a great start! Obviously designed by sailors

This is the first sailing app I’ve used that works to answer the most important questions I have as we sail: what is the current doing? Can I point to get there or will I have to tack? Well worth the price of subscription. And more importantly, it doesn’t show extraneous information and map features that clutter up other navigation apps. This adds to convenience, but most importantly SAFETY when a split-second decision is needed and your plotter is the key source of information. Finally it is a beautiful presentation. Our boat is beautiful, and Savvy Navvy fits right in. Other chart plotters look like the product manager’s kid chose the icons and colors. All the features I might want aren’t here yet, but I appreciate how the company is being careful about adding what is essential, vs. throwing the kitchen sink at the product.

Can’t plot itself out of a paper bag

“Waiting for Godot” would be a more appropriate name for this non-functional app. Unlimited tonnage Master here with 24 years experience. Was hoping to find an app for casual pre planning of routes. Despite my best efforts I am unable to get this waste of time to calculate anything but the most basic, open water routes. Anything near land leaves the user waiting and waiting. Not sure if it’s capable of a solution but do know that in the time I waited I could have manually plotted my own route. Instructions suggest adjusting boat parameters however besides water depth an air draft it seems that once you’ve chosen a boat length there is no apparent way to change it. If your time is at all valuable to yourself and are looking for an app that is functional avoid at all costs. Garbage.

Developer Response ,

Thank you for trying out the review, and for one of the most original reviews we've read. We'd love to find out more as routing normally works in under 2 seconds. I'd love to get on a call with you and find out more and solve your Godot related frustrations. All boat settings can be instantly changed - boat type, length, draught and air draught and if you're a sail boat - polars. Then fuel consumption and cruising speed. Happy to show you how to do this and ease the Wednesday tension that we're sensing. [email protected]

These Are the Best Marine Navigation Apps, According to an Expert

30th mar 2024 by denelle balach.

Rightboat logo

Marine multifunction displays have revolutionized boat navigation thanks to their advanced yet easy-to-use systems. These machines combine navigation sonar, radar, weather, communication tools, and more into one convenient system. In 2009, multifunction displays took on a new face, integrated into smartphone apps for iPhones, tablets, and Androids, the first of which is iNavX.

Ever since, more apps have become available with enhanced software, making them a first choice for some and a reliable backup app for others. Why? It comes down to your boating preferences! Multifunction displays are usually installed in a fixed location on your boat, making them less portable than smartphones. However, multifunction displays offer larger screens and better visibility in sunlight. Multifunction displays are often waterproof and have more features but are a more expensive initial investment than smartphone apps with a robust number of features at a lower price.

Some smartphone apps have wireless integration that allows route planning on your smartphone or tablet, which will transfer to your MFD or can be used to synchronize waypoints, routes, and tracks with multifunction displays. Navionics and Garmin Blue Chart Mobile integrate with the Garmin MFD, while Ray Marine’s mobile app works with their MFD!

No matter your preference, we think it’s important to discuss what these smartphone apps offer, as they can be a valuable tool at sea. In this article, we will rank the best boat navigation apps with the most multifunctional features, the best app interfaces, the apps with the freest features, the apps with the best integration possibilities with other instruments, and our overall best pick.

Best Multifunctional Features Apps

Navionics is an excellent app due to its many features. It contains up-to-date detailed charts you can use offline wherever you go, including multiple overlays, port plans, anchorages, safety depth contours, navaids, and sonar charts. These charts are 1’/0.5m HD bathymetry map charts with detailed bottom contours that help you find new fishing areas. You can edit chart-overlay combinations to customize chart views, highlight shallow areas, and target multiple fishing ranges.

One of the most significant points is that Navionics includes daily updates worldwide. Not all apps update as frequently! This app contains real-time weather data with daily and hourly forecasts and wind, water, buoys, tides, and current data. It can place markers on anchorage spots or where you reel in a fish to save for next time. Navionics has an active community, including the Active Captain community, with thousands of boaters with information and first-hand experience. You can share and save data outside the app or transfer it to your chart plotter, including sharing marinas, repair shops, or other locations outside the app.

Navionics is compatible with the Garmin chart plotter through the Navionics chart plotter card subscription. U.S. and Canadian lakes, rivers, and coastal marine maps cost $49.99 a year, which is average compared to the other apps listed. The biggest concern with this app is that in 2023, the price increased almost double, with no added features. It also has a somewhat problematic offline mode for users. Navionics official website .

Navionics chart by the water. Navionic photo.

iNavX has many features and claims to be the only smartphone app with worldwide coverage. It gives users access to marine charts and maps, including Theyr Premium, Professional+ Charts, Blue Latitude, CHS, Explorer, and Waterway Guide. It includes sailing routes with waypoints and route management with GRIB weather forecasts. It also includes AIS overlays that will integrate with your onboard systems.

iNavX has up-to-date boating conditions, including currents, winds, and swells. You can manage your boating equipment with nautical instrument integration, which saves boating routes to a shared track log. In the advanced chart plotter, you can plot your real-time position using its GPS, pan zoom, rotate charts, and print detailed charts to use with the app.

Your waypoints can be tracked and imported in KML or GPX format and will integrate with external GPS and AIS receivers, depth, speed, wind, engine, and battery instruments. Lastly, the app comes with anchor alarms and port/invalid search. iNavX has premium subscriptions ranging from $9.99 to $299 a year. The downside to iNavX is that their current raster charts are not quilted, customers state they have an overly complicated instrument feed, an annual subscription is required to update charts, and if you’re viewing Navionics charts, there is no access to the sonar charts in iNavX.  iNavX official website .

Best App Interfaces (Ease-of-Use)

Aqua map- mobile chartplotter.

Not only does Aqua Map have an excellent interface that can be quickly learned, but it also has many categorized features. Aqua Map has the latest charts you can use offline, including weather, tides, and POIs from ActiveCaptain and Waterway Guide. It can connect to your boat's AIS and GPS, making it cross-compatible with your other instruments. You can plan routes, record your tracks, and find friends on the water while sharing your data across the live-sharing community.

More features include vector and raster nautical charts for offline use, regular updates, satellite images, real-time route navigation, information on bridges and hazards, and the best fuel prices! Aqua Map has one of the best anchor alarms and AnchorLink with mirroring and email/telegram notifications with an excellent display.

Aqua Map has marine forecasts for wind, waves, currents, and worldwide weather information. It has 1800+ weather buoys to get real-time sea info, tide and current predictions and simulations, 14000+ vector lake maps, easy sharing and uploading of track markers and routes, real-time depth sounder, wind sensor, compass, and GPS display. Depending on the maps you download, you can buy a yearly subscription ranging from $4.99 to $69.99. The downside to this app is that reviewers state their depth boundaries, which can be confusing.  Aqua Map official website .

Savvy Navvy

The second you open your Savvy Navvy app, you will notice how easy it is to navigate and how modern the interface is! They have highly detailed nautical charts that aren’t cluttered and colored well. They have a premium subscription, including weather forecast graphs to scroll through to see weather conditions, wind strength, and direction, including their unique Course to Steer (CTA) automatic weather routing.

They have free local marina and anchorage information, including the VHF channel, mooring details, restaurants, bathrooms, toilets, fuel docks, and more. Savvy Navvy has only four buttons on the bottom with a small set of options on each page, making the menu easy to understand. Savvy Navvy’s premium price is $99 a year, making it one of our more expensive options. The drawback is that their free version does not give you as many features as some other apps, but if you pay the premium price, you will love it!  Savvy Navvy official website .

Best App Integration Features

Active captain.

Garmin’s second app, Active Captain, connects your mobile device with their chart plotters! This app will plot charts, show charts and maps on your smartphone, and contact you with the boating community. You pair the app with your compatible chart plotter to transfer wirelessly and access charts and maps, software updates, routes, and waypoints. This was rated the best integration because this app is excellent but intended only for use with the Garmin chart plotter and is not recommended for stand-alone use.

Active Captain uses Garmin Navionics cartography featuring the same style, appearance, and advanced technology with a one-year subscription to daily updates. This app has exceptional coverage, clarity, and detail, plus the NOAA raster cartography (3) premium features.

The best part about this app is that you can monitor and control your switches, such as the top of your bilge or your doors, to turn them on or off through the app. Conversely, your chart plotter can receive calls, text messages, and more, so you can put your phone away where it is safe and dry! Active Captain is free to use and connect to your devices and community. The biggest issue with this app is its lack of compatibility with non-Garmin instruments and its relatively poor ability to be a stand-alone app for those who don’t have a Garmin chart plotter.  Active Captain official website .

C-Map: Boating

C-Map is compatible with the Simrad NSX series, the B&G Zeus S series, and many other instruments, making them a top integration choice. Some of its best features include full planning and navigation, Auto Routing™ tracks, waypoints, and thousands of points of interest. It has a free chart viewer with access to the most up-to-date C-MAP charts. It has unlimited offline map downloads, GPS, and full navigation mode. You can import and export your GPX files to share your routes, tracks, and waypoints with friends!

It also includes a marine weather forecast, weather along the route, weather overlay, chart personalization, high-resolution bathymetry, custom depth shading, a measure distance tool, and shaded relief. This app is constantly updated with the most up-to-date maps and new features and functionalities.

The C-Map map browser and planning tools are free, and the premium subscription is only $14.00/year, which allows unlimited offline map downloads, viewing of your GPS position, and access to the full navigational features. However, lake boaters beware. Reviewers note that some local lakes are unavailable or have limited range despite C-Map stating that all are provided.  C-Map official website .

Best Free Navigation App

This is one of our favorite free boat navigation apps because it's high-quality and the only app that is free to download and completely free to use! You can find routes to new destinations anywhere in the United States, track your boat trips, see your friends on the water, and get information from other boaters through their online community.

Argo uses NOAA/USACE charts that auto and manually route to thousands of water destinations. You can save all your boat trips on your smartphone and see 7-day weather conditions, wind, and tide forecasts. Despite most of these apps locking away features behind premium, you can see offline charts, custom depth shading, captain's log reports, and import and export GPX files on ARGO for free. It truly is an excellent app, considering the price. The cons to this app are that it has limited features compared to Navionics and other paid subscription features and isn’t updated as frequently.  Argo official website .

Best Overall Marine Navigation App

Though you can’t go wrong with any of the apps, Navionics checks all the boxes regarding features, interface, integration with other devices, and price, making it our overall top choice. It is a great stand-alone app and pairs wonderfully with Garmin's other instruments, making it a trustworthy and dependable option no matter the adventure. We hope one of these apps will improve your planning and navigating the next time you’re on the water!

Best Navigation apps for sailors: Seapilot

Yachting World

Best Navigation apps for sailors tested. This time we take a look at Seapilot and compare its pros and cons.

Seapilot app on a phone

Seapilot app on a phone

Modern sailing increasingly relies on apps on your phone or tablet to find your way. We have tested the latest and best navigation apps on the market.

This app is based on some features of the professional ECDIS charting systems and in many ways has some of the best features – but while some will not agree, personally I found it unintuitive to use.

The significant issue, however, is that the autozoom on its charting detail just doesn’t work in many regions. Until I zoomed in to a small area (maybe five square miles) there was so much clutter on the screen that there was not much that could be done. Even when zoomed in, information about navigational marks would often be overlaid on spot depths, making both impossible to read. Seapilot acknowledges that some regions suffer from this as an issue due to the use of ECDIS data and hopes to rectify it going forward.

The app also uses ECDIS warning symbols for some hazards, which leisure sailors won’t be familiar with.

Downloading GRIB files for wind was ponderous due to large file sizes, but once completed the data as a result was detailed and easy to use and clutter such as spot depth was automatically removed for clarity. Tide data is available at various points, but no current strength or direction.

The app has a great MOB feature which instantly marks the casualty’s location, showing distance and bearing. Other apps might well copy this.

MOB feature Ability to connect to NMEA data from boat AIS overlays with internet connection

Not the most intuitive to use Auto detail on charts poor No tide or current information No distance and bearing tool

Top Priority Features

While there can be a number of functions users may find interesting, we carefully identified the top 10 features that can make or break an app. These factors will highly contribute to the usefulness while on an actual trip, ability to provide information that can better prepare the you for your journey, safety, data management and affordability.

  • Real time positioning – exactly locate yourself on a chart using GPS. Useful in estimating distance from a point or simply knowing exactly where you are and not get lost.
  • Route Tracke r – start and stop record the track taken using GPS and display it on the chart. Gives Course over Ground (COG) and Speed over Ground (SOG). Log, review and export data for record keeping and future use.
  • Route Planning – to create a path on a chart that can be followed using GPS, usually calculates distance between two or more points, ETA from point A to B, fuel needed. Useful before (to prepare necessary things) and makes navigation a lot easier. Just follow the arrow!
  • Route Planning Incorporating Other Data – Modify cruising speed, ETA and fuel needed based on the live atmospheric/weather data, usually wind speed and direction.
  • AIS Live – Use data (from other users or providers) to plot boat traffic and other activities on the chart, think about Waze. Increases situational awareness and safety.
  • Download charts and Offline use – store a portion or the entire chart on your phone and use a number of features of the app even while offline, very useful at the middle of the sea where mobile data is unavailable.
  • Chart Options and Data Overlay – Apply one or several layers of charts and data to show on the chart, e.g. depth, satellite, NOAA, wind direction, etc.
  • Import/Export Data/ Data Synchronization – Download and upload waypoints, routes, tracks and use in other apps and softwares, sync data purchased to other devices like iPad, tablet and laptop.
  • Weather Forecast – View changing wind speed and direction, precipitation, tides, and current data.
  • Interface/User Friendliness – How easy is it to use for recreational boaters or more advanced users.

Many navigation apps can be downloaded for free and a lot of them have features that are accessible without a cost. However, in order to maximize their features such as unlocking AIS Live, weather forecast, downloading charts for offline use, a premium subscription is usually needed.

Some apps would allow users to use their phones’ GPS system to access basic functions such as real-time positioning, route tracking, even route planning at no cost, but these would usually require paying for the chart itself.

In general, these apps are very inexpensive (most of them less than $50 annually!), considering all the benefits we can get from them like saving dollars on unnecessary fuel consumption because of longer routes or the cost of repair in cases of accidents, and of course, our safety is priceless!

What is NMEA and is it really necessary?

NMEA stands for National Marine Electronics Association, this allows us to integrate electronic devices such as GPS, Sonar, radar, VFS radion and even boat speedometer, engine thermometer, oil pressure gauge, weather instruments, etc. In simpler terms, it lets our devices talk to each other.

Now the question is, is NMEA a must-have for boat navigation? While NMEA is undoubtedly useful in managing data we get from these separate devices, many recreational/small boats do not necessarily have a lot of sensors installed in them to the point that it’s unmanageable, so not having NMEA will not be a big issue for recreational boaters.

Some applications listed here do not have the NMEA integration feature but anyhow serve their purpose pretty well. You can still locate yourself, create a route, record your track, access weather forecasts, and most importantly, arrive at your destination safely even without it.

Charts or Maps?

C-MAP on different chart layers: nautical, high resolution bathymetry, shaded relief and satellite

All charts are maps but not all maps are charts . A map is a general term referring to a flat drawing of the Earth, or an area of it, let’s say a country. There are road maps that show networks of roads and passages, or topographic maps that show elevation. Meanwhile, there are also specialized maps that show great details of the bodies of water including depth or the water’s edge or any danger for navigation, these are called charts. Charts are what we need for boating !

Nautical Charts – Key to safe navigation and every boater should be familiar with. Through it, we will know the water depths, locations of dangers to navigation, locations and characteristics of aids to navigation, anchorages, and other features. Many, if not all, boating apps use this to let boaters plan the best route safely and economically.

Other Charts/Maps – Some apps would have more charts that you can use other than just nautical charts. Examples are satellite maps that show realistic images of the Earth’s surface, or Sonar imagery , which creates  extraordinary bottom contour generated from water soundwaves.

Free vs. Paid? The amount of open-sourced data available helps the number of free charts grow, allowing many boaters to avoid spending extra on charts from big companies that make them, but remember that subscribing to these providers allows us to continuously get updates as well as ensure accuracy and reliability that we might not get from free sources.

Our verdict?

Well-designed and reliable, especially to recreational boaters who prefer simplicity and ease of use, the only downside is there’s not so much room for personalization. For accessing different charts including Sonar and NOAA, plus many advanced features such as auto-routing and data on marinas, mooring, fuel station, etc., the app subscription is relatively cheap.

  • Integrate weather data in planning routes

Being only available on App Store, Android users can now eliminate this app. Although, it is important to note that this is the cheapest app among all that we’ve tested. As it doesn’t have data integration on route planning, it’s NMEA compatibility is not actually maximized. Its interface is also better for iPad/tablet than smart phones.

Play/App Store Rating: 3⭐ No. of Downloads: 100K+

Cost: Free App with but other features only accessible with premium subscription at $39.99 US and charts are paid separately.

Play/App Store Rating: 4.4⭐ No. of Downloads: 100K+

Cost: Free App with NOAA Chart in the US, but needs to purchase other charts at different prices.

It is also NMEA compatible with extensive data that can be integrated to the app.

Whether you’re just a beginner or already a seasoned boater, it is now almost impossible to start our engines without installing at least one app on our smartphones (others even couldn’t without a backup!).
