Our Glacier Bay Catamarans

We have 3 Glacier Bay Catamarans (2 hulls) which have been selected as the best boat for Maui waters.

Larger groups can rent multiple boats. Our luxurious Glacier Bay catamarans are the smoothest riding boats in their class. Spacious and comfortable, the ultimate boating experience. The 24′ Glacier Bay 2240 SX Renegade is perfect for fishing, snorkeling, or just boating and is available 7 days a week. We launch, retrieve and clean your boat so you can focus on enjoying the day.

The 2240 Renegade SX can be molded into whatever your needs may be. She offers an open layout comfortable for cruising, as well as being equipped with plenty of fishing features.

The 2240 Renegade SX is a family boat with good fishing features. She was designed after her big sister the 2640, which she closely resembles. There’s plenty of room to move around on this boat, and you won’t feel over crowded. Her fishy features include two large fish lockers, a 30-gallon bait tank, saltwater wash-down, rod racks in the cockpit and cabin, a tackle box, and aft coaming pads among other things. To port there’s an enclosed head that makes extended cruises a pleasure. The 2240 offers a long list of equipment as well as plenty of options to create the ultimate recreational boat.

A Boat With Dual Personalities – Glacier Bay has bridged the gap between fun cruiser and serious offshore fisherman. The legendary Glacier Bay hull design, proven by various ocean crossings up to 1300 miles, has been fitted with the accoutrements of an inshore family cruiser, resulting in the new 2240 Renegade SX. The catamaran hull, which carries its ample width all the way to the bow, has two large bench seats forward of the windshield. Aft of the windshield, an L-shaped lounge with a removable table and an additional small bench seat provide plenty of seating under the optional Bimini top. The control console located to starboard features great visibility, good ergonomics, and room for electronics. The swivel helm seat provides more captain-comfort than a bench seat, lessening fatigue on long boating days. Across from the helm, the port-side console opens to reveal a utilitarian head with great storage for items that must stay dry.

While the rest of the boat says fun, the large, uncluttered cockpit screams Fish On! This boat comes ready to fish with standard features including gunnel mounted rod holders, rod storage under the starboard gunnel and in the head, a tackle storage center, and a bait prep station. The 30-gallon live-well incorporated into the bench seat aft of the helmsman’s chair is standard equipment; as are a saltwater wash-down system and two fish lockers under the cockpit sole to handle the day’s catch. The transom cutout for access to the swim platform is just wide enough to serve as a step for junior boaters or a good place to sit while donning swim fins or SCUBA gear. Options for the boat include a retractable swim ladder and a fresh water system with a cockpit shower. The 2240 also features an abundance of storage and easy access for electronics installation and systems maintenance.

By far the most notable feature is the boat’s ride. During sea-trials on a blustery day in Maui’s Southern Bay, the boat slices through the chop without a complaint at 40 miles per hour. We found the 22-footer to be quite economical, averaging well over two miles per gallon at 35 mph. The tendency of catamarans to “lean the wrong way” in high speed turns rather disconcerting. To lessen this predisposition, Glacier Bay has canted the engines outboard. (The propellers are not directly under, but rather outboard of the center of the motors.) Top quality hardware and construction methods are employed on the 2240.

Boat Rentals

  • Top speed for the Glacier Bay 2240 Renegade SX is 25.0 mph , burning 18.4 gallons per hour (gph) .
  • Best cruise for the Glacier Bay 2240 Renegade SX is 35.0 mph (56.3 kph), and the boat gets 1.8 miles per gallon (mpg), giving the boat a cruising range of 171 miles (436.13 kilometers).

Wondering Where to Pick Up Your Boat Rental?

All boat rentals require a prior reservation

Hawai’i is a very special place, and Maui is our favorite island.

The island is surrounded by clear blue water at a perfect temperature for snorkeling. The reefs are filled with an amazing variety of tropical fish and sea turtles. Humpback whales flock to Maui’s waters for half of the year, and it’s not unusual to spot dolphins during the day. This place is full of divine connections and there truly is no better way to experience it than behind the helm of your own private yacht.

Maui Boating

The absolute BEST way to Whale Watch…

Kohola, or Pacific Humpback Whales as they are known to the rest of the world, are some of the most majestic and gentle creatures on earth. People from all over the globe arrive to Maui to witness this awe inspiring migration destination and many leave with life changing perspectives that change them for the better. Every year these glorious giants of the sea make their way from their cold summer home of the bearing straights, near Alaska. They bring with them one purpose, to reproduce. Whether it’s by the act of competing for a worthy mate or by giving birth to the next generation, these animals have a lot to share with the casual looker. Experiencing this life altering event can truly only be done best from your own vessel.

Into Sport Fishing?

Our boats are mean fishing machines. They can get you to locations that hold some of the world’s most prized tropical deep sea fish. We offer many options for your fishing needs from full-color GPS navigation and fishing charts to high-quality rod and reel setups complete with lures that have all been proven to catch the famous fish of Maui. Mahi Mahi, Ono, Ahi, and even the elusive Marlin have all hit the deck of our boats. And don’t worry, if you don’t know how to clean them, we can help with that too. Our staff are avid watermen with years of experience both fishing and navigating these waters. This is a trip not be missed…

My fiancé and I went on a sunset sail with this company last night. I woke up this morning and couldn’t wait to write a review! It was an amazing experience. They are a top-notch company and had everything dialed in for us perfectly. I cannot recommend them enough!

Wonderful 2 hours in the company of Captain Keahi and Ali on the beautiful Gungho. Our family of four wanted to enjoy having a vessel to ourselves and this was the perfect choice. The ocean and skyline was stunning and we had the best Maui sunset we had seen.

This sailing experience was so much fun. Marty and Kass were fantastic and felt instantly like friends. They had a wealth of information about Hawaii, sailing, and marine life. They took us to a great snorkel spot. We were also treated to some whales, a rainbow, and a gorgeous sunset.

We had an amazing time during our sunset sail! It was such a gorgeous evening! Breathtaking scenery! Marty and Cass were awesome! Cass took the best pics for us! We even got to see a whale! It was one of the best parts of our week in Maui!

Better Boats make for Better Adventures

Discover the difference for yourself.

_A736405.jpg

We raised the standard for ocean day trips and tours.

This vessel was designed for small group adventures. We get a lot of comments about how comfortable our boat is compared to a raft. Rafts tend to bounce off the top of waves, as they are designed to be as light as possible and carry as many guests as possible. Kaiao's width helps add to her stability and allows guests to be able to walk about the vessel and stretch their legs without stepping on other peoples feet which is not possible on any raft.  Kaiao also features a forward adventure section and shaded upper deck section, and every seat has a front row view!

TESTIMONIALS

We came to Maui for a destination wedding and since we aren’t big Bachelorette or Bachelor Party people, we decided to just go on a dinner cruise with the whole Bridal Party. Well, our group was so large that by the time we bought enough tickets, we could actually save money by doing a private charter so we did! It was amazing having the boat to ourselves. The crew was all so fantastic and sweet to us and the drinks were flowing! The dancers were so great and the guy playing guitar and singing was too! It was exactly the relaxing event we needed before the wedding weekend got started!

We came to Maui to celebrate mine and my husband’s 50th Anniversary and brought our whole family, all 47 of us! I hoped that we could do something big like this that would accommodate everyone but I never imagined how smoothly it would all go! The planner was amazing, and got all the decorations and food perfect. All my grandkids had the best time in the water and on the slide. All the crewmembers were so good with them, and were just so great and helpful all around. I couldn’t imagine a better way to celebrate with my family and I’m so thankful for everything you all did for us.

You all are phenomenal. I felt at ease from the moment we started discussing the specifics until the moment we got back to the hotel afterwards. You absolutely made our retreat. Everyone had an incredible time, and the dinner was perfect. The cocktails were to die for! The music and dancing were also just so perfect. From everyone at our startup, and our loved ones, thank you so much for making our event so perfect!

What makes a Maui sunset special?

Maui County consists of the Hawaiian Islands of Maui, Molokai, and Lana'i. We get to make the most of what every sunset has to offer- from changes in the clouds, to the colors of the mountains, and yes, we even get to see the "green flash" when we're lucky! Every sunset has something amazing to offer, even during the times of year when it dips behind the island of Lanai. When you are on Maui be sure to take some time to not only soak in the sun, but enjoy a sunset as well.

Boat Rental Destination: Maui, Hawaii

Maui Boat Rental

Yes, you can rent a boat in Maui. There are options for sailing, fishing, paddling, jet skiing and cruising on the second largest and second most populated island in Hawaii.  Let’s see what it takes to get our on the water in someone else’s boat here.

What’s Good

  • Very accessible from US, especially the Western States.
  • It is an island, surrounded by water, with incredible natural beauty
  • High level of tourism means room for niche opportunities
  • Lack of traditional hazards to navigation found elsewhere

What’s Not

  • The surf and rocky shore do not lend themselves well to inexperienced boaters
  • Rough, and often unpredictable conditions limit your ability to go out
  • The industry is focused on high volume tours that deliver on low expectations

Boating Conditions in Maui

Maui is a small island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It can be subject to violent surf conditions as swells build up over thousands of miles before reaching the shore and being compressed onto the beaches. Like other islands in Hawaii, the ‘lee’ shore (downwind) on the East, and Northeast side tends to be the most protected from weather (both wind and rain). This is where you’ll find most of the resorts, boat rentals, and charters.  On this side of the island, you’ll usually find manageable waters once you get out of the surf a hundred or so yards offshore.

The weather is calmer in the morning. So, the earlier you can plan to start, and end, your day, the better.  And by early, I mean, plan on being back on shore between 11:00am and 1:00pm as the wind and surf start to pick up. The weather is pleasant year-round, benefiting from the moderating effect of all that ocean water. Winter is wetter than Summer, but you’ll still be able to find sunshine most days on that ‘lee’ shore.

Things to do on a Boat Rental in Maui

Snorkeling at molokini crater.

Aerial of the Molokini Crater of Maui with charter boats floating above the coral that lies beneath.

Molokini is a partially submerged volcanic crater about 3 miles off the Southwestern coast of Maui. There’s an abundance of coral inside the crater and the entire area is a protected wildlife sanctuary. The walls of the crater serve as a breakwater to calm the waters inside and minimize flow of ocean currents. All of this makes for some incredible snorkeling and bird watching. Some will even say this is the best snorkeling in all of Hawaii. You can only access Molokini Crater by boat.

A school of fish swimming at Molokini Crater off the coast of Maui

Snorkeling at Turtle Town

Maluaka Beach, which is back on Maui directly East of Molokini, hosts an abundance of sea turtle activity. This area is referred to as ‘Turtle Town’. To access this area, you can:

  • Swim out with snorkel gear from the beach
  • Take a tour boat from one of the marinas to the North
  • Paddle over from Wailea using a rental kayak, paddleboard, or outrigger canoe.

For the paddling option, head to Hawaiian Ocean Sports in front of the Grand Wailea hotel or Wailea Scuba Surf Paddle in front the Fairmont Hotel. Both offer hourly rentals and tours with a two-mile paddle down to Maluaka. Standup Paddleboards are great for Turtle Town because you can really get a clear view into the water while standing on your board. However, tandem kayaks and outrigger canoes are better for storing gear and snacks. They’re also a bit safer out in the ocean in case one paddler gets tired.

This is an adventure that needs to be completed in the morning. The rental companies in Wailea will stop allowing paddlers to depart by noon on most days as the wind and surf start to pick up.

A sea turtle in the water at turtle town off the coast of Maui

Lanai is a sparsely populated island 9 miles West of Maui. You can get there from Maui by ferry, or on a private boat rental. Hulopoe Bay on the South side of Lanai is known for its snorkeling. It tends to be less crowded than Molokini. You can get here on a boat rental, charter boat or even take a ferry for $60 round trip.

Lanai also has some breathtaking underwater caves called the Cathedrals. However, this requires scuba diving to appreciate.

Whale Watching

More than half of the world’s humpback whales spend winter in Hawaii where they birth and nurture their calves. So, the months of January and February in Hawaiit make for some of the best whale watching anywhere. On Maui last January, it seemed like we could look out on the water in any direction for a minute or so and see the spray from a blowhole. Taking a private boat rental or charter out to the waters off Maui will give you a better chance at seeing them up close.

A humpback whale breaching off the coast of Wailea, Maui

Boat Rental and Charter Options in Maui

Paddling rentals on maui.

Outrigger canoe leaving a Maui beach

Most of the resorts in Maui have a modest equipment rental facility on the beach.  About half of those rent stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) and sea kayaks.  Many hotels also have one or two outrigger canoes that go out in small groups.  We saw tour groups in sea kayaks and outrigger canoes about a mile off-shore.

Paddling in Maui consists of paddling out to sea on a short route and back to the beach.  There are no navigable rivers, or much in the way of paddling destinations. However, this is a great way to get a bit of distance from the beach to snorkel.

Beach parking on Maui can be hard to find, so its best to look for a boat rental service within walking distance from your hotel.  If you do rent from an outfitter that requires you to drive, be sure to ask if they can arrange free or validated parking at the hotel they operate from. Otherwise, you could wind up driving in circles hunting for an open parking space on the street or in public parks.

I also recommend waiting to reserve/commit until you are on the island.  This equipment has a high degree of availability, and the websites are in no way indicative of what you’ll find on the beach on a given day.

West Maui Sailing School Boat Rentals

Sailboat Rentals on Maui

Hobie 17 Getaway sailing catamaran at West Maui Sailing School

We found one Hobie Cat sailboat rental on Maui at the North end of Ka’anapali at West Maui Sailing School .  To take this small catamaran out, you need to go with an instructor.  The lesson costs $85, plus $25 for each additional person. Unfortunately, they only have one instructor, and for two years now we’ve been told he is out for several weeks with a back injury.  We went by the outfitter to find out more. They do indeed have a Hobe 17 Getaway sailing catamaran with roller furling jib on a beach dolly.  However, it seems the ‘sailing school’ has evolved into a primarily a beach rental similar to all the others with the sailboat gathering vegetation.

Hawaiian outrigger sailing canoe leaving the beach in Ka'anapali, Maui

There is also an outrigger sailing canoe available for tours in Wailea. This trimaran departs from the beach in front of the Fairmont Hotel.  While it appears to be a very sea-worthy vessel, the sailing rig itself is rather small.  So, it could be a fun adventure, but likely not on the same order as a Hobie Cat.

Maui Day Boat Charters

The vast majority of visitors to Maui will find their way onto the water by day boat charter. There are a very wide variety of boats and tour types to choose from.

Snorkel/Sunset Cruises

Sailing catamaran boarding for a tour on the beach in Ka'anapali on Maui.

Beach catamarans of 50-60 feet board on the Ka’anapali beach at the Whalers Cove Mall, along with a number of Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs) of varying sizes.  There are kiosks where the mall meets the beach to book a charter.  The beach cats give you more opportunity to bask in the sun. However, the RIBs will get you to a destination and back much faster. Private charters are available for $1,300 per hour and up, including food and beverage. Sea Maui also has a monohulled sailboat for up to six people that goes for $1,300 for two hours.

A few downsides to note: I’ve never seen a single charter catamaran on Maui with its sails. So, if you are looking to sail, you may be disappointed. Sea Maui’s monohull, on the other hand, I have seen sailing. Many of these boats also looked uncomfortable crowded.  So, if you aren’t an extreme extrovert, be sure to ask about capacity limits before booking a tour.

Trilogy sailing catamaran leaving Lahaina HArbor with its sails furled

There are also a number of larger tour boats that leave from harbors in Lahaina and Kiehei. Maalaea harbor in Kihei is more convenient from Wailea, while Lahaina is near the Ka’anapali resorts.

Ocean Odyseey snorkel tour boat under way

If you take a snorkel cruise, you’ll probably be pitched on renting a west suit or vest to stay warm in the frigid waters.  We went to Molokini on a cloudy day in January.  It was a little chilly for my taste, and I hate cold water, but I didn’t think a vest was necessary.   I recommend bringing a ‘rash guard’ which is a swim shirt or moisture wicking athletic shirt to keep your torso a bit warmer. A pool noodle is also a great accessory to bring along; it helps you sit higher in the water so you can take breaks and stay a bit warmer in the sun.

Deep Sea Sportfishing Charters

George showing off his skipjack tuna caught off the coast of Maui

A number of fishing charter boats leave from harbors in Lahaina and Kiehei,. Price for a shared boat start at $200-$400 per person for 2-8 hours of fishing. If you’ve got a group, most companies also offer private charters. As with most of our boating recommendations in Hawaii, go as early as you can for calm water. Even if you don’t get sea-sick, your charter is much less likely to get cancelled or cut short in the morning. Read about our charter with Finest Kind Sportfishing here .

Maui Private Powerboat Rental (bareboat)

Glacier Bay 2240 twin-engined catamaran moored in Molokini Crater off the coast of Maui

The one private boat rental opportunity we found on Maui without a captain (aside from paddling) was through Aloha Outdoors . This is the only true ‘ bareboat ‘ option we’re aware of on the island. Aloha Outdoors rents a fleet of three Glacier Bay 2240 SXs at the Kihei Boat ramp, just north of Wailea. These 23′ power catamarans are available for 2 to 6 hour intervals.

Powerboat Rental Checkout

On the day of our private boat rental, we arrived at 7:45am for an 8:00am reservation. There was one other group ahead of us, but we were out on the water by 8:30am. There was one dock hand with two trucks, so I assume some of the staff live close by. He did note they were currently short staffed.

The dock hand talked to us about our boating experience and shared the challenges unique to the area, discussed today’s forecast and reminded me several times that it is my decision to go out and come back, and nobody else’s.  He encouraged us to go down and take a look at the inlet before we made a final decision to go out.  Then he filmed a short video of me acknowledging my responsibility for the rental boat and my crew.

Our boat rental at the Kihei boat ramp on Maui

Coming and Going from the Dock

He puts the boat at the dock and sends us on our way.  The marina is absolutely the most challenging that I’ve ever navigated.  It has a huge rocky sea wall that keeps the water calm at the ramp and dock…although when the surf picks up the water can splash over the wall!  The space around the docks and the rocky breakwater is relatively tight, and since it is the only recreational ramp in the area, it is relatively busy.  It wasn’t congested, but there was a constant pace of boats coming in and out.

Once you are off the dock and turned around without hitting the rocks, you head for the end of the sea wall where you make a hard left and head straight out to sea.  There are four very tall, well marked buoys to guide you in an out.

The challenge though is on the way back.  Since you’ve been out for a few hours, the sea has picked up with larger swells than when you left.  Coming in, you’ll have a following sea with the swells at your stern breaking to surf before you reach the inlet.  The boat master warned us of the condition before we left and again over the phone when we called for a return pickup.

You have to time your re-entry across two concepts:

  • Wait for a lull in the sea as big waves usually come in sets, then when the sea state has calmed
  • Position your boat behind a swell with ample space before the next swell behind your boat.

Out on the Water

If you come in on top of a swell, it will push your boat uncontrollably toward the shore and into the rocks as you try to turn into the inlet.  Once you safely get to the buoys and make your turn, you’ve gotta put the hammer down and get that boat behind the rocky breakwater before the next wave crashes.  Then, once in the marina, quickly slow the boat to avoid the docks, traffic, and sea wall.  As we discovered, the show isn’t over at that point.  Calm your nerves, regain your fine motor skills, and idle back and forth until you have a clear dock space.  Then, be gentler than you’ve ever been before coming into the dock: rather than a wooden dock or a wooden dock covered in tires or fire hose, your dock is made of concrete and rebar!

Once you are away from the shore, there really isn’t much in the way of navigation hazards to worry about. The bottom drops off quickly so there’s no running aground. There isn’t much boat traffic on this side of the island (the main port is on the East side of Maui), no crab pots, and no rivers emptying logs into the seaway.

If you want to snorkel in Molokini, take the 7am start.  There are two buoys for recreational boats in the crater. Remember that arrived at 7:45am? There were two boats putting in when we arrived that we watched heading out. After we launched at 8:30am we headed directly to Molokini. When we arrived, the two recreational buoys had been picked up by the two boats we watched depart at 7:45am! So, we would have had first dibs at 7.

There are also a number of commercial buoys available that you can use after 10:30. There are plenty there, so you’ll likely have no trouble finding a free one. However, you have to dive or get in the water and maneuver your boat hook to get the rope, which is about 8′ deep, and then thread the line from your boat.  It can be done, but some combination of rough conditions, inexperienced crew, and a crowded crater might have you rethinking it.

While Molokini is the most obvious destination for a boat rental on this side of Maui, the state maintains a number of mooring balls throughout the area with their locations recorded here.   The charter company will tell you, and I agree, the anchor really should only be for emergencies out here because of the coral and harsh conditions, so these will be your only practical options for ‘stops’.

The charter company will rent fishing gear for $85 per pole and the boat is definitely set up for it.  Hawaii does not require a fishing license, so there’s no additional cost or paperwork to do this.

The whale watching is unbeatable if you are out during January or February.  We had to stop our boat three times for whales that came within 100 yards of our boat while cruising around.  We saw lots of breeches and felt surrounded the entire time on the water.

What to Expect in the Rental Boat

These boats have been taken in and out of a rough saltwater harbor and fished on by renters for many years, and that’s how they look.  They’re stained, rusted, and faded.  The rub rails are well used, and the fabric is well worn.  However, our boat was mechanically sound and it was obvious that Aloha Outdoors looks after the boats very well.  So, it isn’t a plush cream puff for filming rap videos, but it has a comfortable seating layout and room for fishing.  The rental company limits your group size to six. Six adults will have plenty of room to stow their gear and stretch out on this boat.

The twin Yamaha outboards with almost 3,000 hours both ran, started, stopped, and shifted without complaint.  The boat has full redundancy with separate fuel and electrical systems for each engine, giving you a strong margin of safety should anything go wrong.  The only thing not working on our boat was one of the fuel gauges; but we had confidence in fuel in the other tank and I’ve never trusted a marine fuel gauge anyway.

You can read more about our experience with the boat here .

What to bring on a Private Powerboat Rental in Maui

Bring food, plenty of drinking water, reef safe sunscreen and ginger ale. If the weather picks up, you could be out longer than you expected before it is safe to come in. So be prepared for that with appropriate provisions.  While the catamaran hull handled the chop incredibly well, it did have quite a bit of side-to-side roll.  Busy Boater Jr experienced his first bought of sea sickness out here. Ginger ale or ginger snaps can help settle a stomach at sea. Consider having any crew that might get seasick take Dramamine. We also brought a pair of binoculars, as none are provided with the boat rental.

What kind of Skills and Experience do You Need to Rent a Private Powerboat on Maui?

Renting a powerboat on Maui without a captain is definitely not for an inexperienced crew and may not even be suitable for many experienced lake boaters.  Being confident handling a powerboat in rough seas and navigating an unfamiliar coastline with a GPS is a is a must. Aloha Outdoors does offer the option to go out with an instructor. This would be a fantastic opportunity to get some rough water experience for future adventures.

How Much Does the Powerboat Rental Cost?

Currently, the least expensive rental option is $695 for five hours. Last year, before they ran into a staffing shortage, they offered shorter trips for as low as $295. You’ll also be charged for fuel at the end of your charter, based on what you’ve used. We were out for about 4 hours, and they estimated we used 15 gallons of fuel and charged us $4.85 per gallon for $72.75 in fuel. That price was in line with the pumps in the area. With tax, our total 5-hour charter charge was $817.56.

The website says there is no insurance available for these charters. However, when we booked, there was an offer of $100 per $1,000 of coverage. That seemed pretty steep, so we decided to roll the dice.

Parking is free at the Kihei Boat Ramp; there seemed to be an adequate amount, but we were there on a weekday.

If you can, book your reservation at least a week ahead of your trip to the island as they do fill up.

Jet Ski Rentals on Maui

Jet skis on the beach

Maui Water Sports rents jet skis on the beach in Ka’anapali for $99 for 45 minutes plus $50 for an additional rider. No experience is necessary to take this tour. Jet Skis handle rough water very well for a number of reasons, and these rentals leave from a floating dock, so its east to maneuver in and out. There’s a big caveat though: you can’t rent jet skis during whale season (December 15 through May 15).

Unless you are with a child that is too young to take their own ski, I highly recommend riding alone. For the most part, jet skis are a lot more fun with one person: they will go faster with less weight, and you’ll feel more comfortable making quick turns and doing sweet jumps without a passenger that’s less able to anticipate what’s coming. On older jet skis, it was fun to put a passenger on the back and try to throw them off. However, newer jet skis are so big and stable that you have to be moving so fast and violently to throw someone off, it gets dangerous.

Public Service Announcement: one of jet skis’ best attributes is also their Achilles heel: they’re easy for inexperienced riders to operate. Many inexperienced riders the world over head out without an understanding of the rules of the road, or respect for fellow boaters. This has led to Jet Skis being banned in certain waters and implementation of licensing requirements in others. When you Jet Ski, please keep a lookout in all directions for other boats and give others plenty of room to operate. Be mindful of your wake; it can ruin a peaceful day on the water for paddlers and other small boats.

Boogie Boarding on Maui

Grocery store boogie board on Honokahua Bay Beach in Maui

One of the simplest ways to enjoy the waters of Hawaii is with a boogie board. You can rent these on the beach, but we bought ours for $12.99 at the grocery store. They also sell this same model at the ABC Store for $14.99, along with some larger, slightly more expensive models. This is also one alternative that favors the afternoon, since you’ll be looking for some bigger surf to ride those waves.

Exterior of Boss Frogs BEach Rentals in Lahaina

More recently, we rented a boogie board from Boss Frogs in Lahaina. $25 got us a larger, sturdier board for the full week that we returned on our way to the airport. This is a great place to rent all kinds of gear for the beach, by the way.

Getting to Your Maui Boat Rental

The main airport on Maui, OGG, offers daily direct flights from all major cities on the US West Coast. There are also flights from a few Canadian cities, O’Hare and JFK.  Outside of those areas, you’ll get here by connecting through the West Coast, or Honolulu, on the nearby island of Oahu.

OGG is a very easy airport to access. Security lines are short and rental cars are within walking distance of the terminal.

A rental car is usually the best option to get around the island of Maui because most resorts and boating destinations are 30+ minutes from the airport, and attractions are spread out far enough that walking or taking public transportation is not very practical.  Hotels here charge the price of about three margaritas plus tip per day for valet parking, but self-parking is often available free of charge.

The service and the communication was amazing I felt very special like my desires were met. I saw that the captain went out of his way to make sure we were happy. 😃 I do not write reviews but I will for them. Thanks for a gift and experience I will not forget .

From start to finish was seamless experience - Keahi was on point with locations for snorkeling and was blessed by the Whale gods with some amazing breaches, and should have paid extra for the sunset- can’t wait to use them again next time we are back

Everything was great. We took a sunset cruise and the weather was perfect. The captain and first mate were wonderful, and the communication to make it happen was awesome. Prayers they will be able to continue after the fire. They make you feel like O’hana.

Best time ever! We have been to Maui many times. This was the first time we had a private charter and we are glad we did. The boat, crew and itinerary were great. We enjoyed snorkeling part of the time and sailing part of the time. Seeing the sea turtles and fish were highlights. Everyone was so helpful.

The 2 person crew of Keahi is outstanding. They are welcoming, professional, and delivered exactly as communicated. If you are considering a sail/snorkel in Maui with one of the big commercial outfits, you should definitely consider Keahi instead. You will not be disappointed! Captain Marty even found us at a restaurant after the sail to return a left-behind pair of shoes!

From the initial correspondence, Ali, the booking agent, was super helpful and responded to emails ultra quick. The information and directions (where to park, how to get to the boat) provided before hand were super helpful. Once we got on the boat, we were completely catered to. We were looking for something "chill and relaxing," and that's exactly what we got. We snorkeled with the turtles and then sailed around spotting whales and dolphins. Thank you Marty and Kass for an awesome trip!

UHERO forecasts a lagging Maui recovery and slower overall Hawaiʻi growth

small sailboat rental maui

Maui’s economy will only gradually recover from its post-wildfire downturn while visitor industries in other counties across the state will continue to operate at high levels, according to the University of Hawaiʻi Economic Research Organization ’s (UHERO) third quarter forecast for 2024.

The newly released forecast notes that Hawaiʻi’s trend growth is now slower than in past decades. That will continue to be the case because of limited population and labor force growth in coming years, according to UHERO.

The report notes that the aftermath of Maui’s wildfires continue to disrupt the local labor market. “Coupled with the Valley Isle’s ongoing housing crisis, this has driven some residents to leave,” the report states, noting that data on out-migration is extremely limited. “The county’s labor force has fallen by 5%, implying a loss of approximately 4,200 workers. When activity picks up, labor shortages will be a problem,” according to UHERO.

Housing affordability is a challenge across the islands, “but nowhere worse than on Maui,” the report states.

“Full Maui home rebuilding will take many years, and in the meantime rents have shot up,” UHERO notes. Economists note that uncertainty remains about the proposal to turn 7,000 short-term rental units into long-term housing. Meanwhile, condos across the state face a crisis in obtaining master policy insurance, prompting the state to intervene. Pending interest rate declines are expected to give the home resale market a lift.

“Overall construction will continue at a high level, supported by Maui rebuilding, other housing development, and the huge federal military projects,” the report notes.

As for tourism, “the post-wildfire recovery on Maui has essentially stalled for now,” according to the UHERO report, and Maui hotels are seeing falling occupancy rates as displaced residents are moved to other housing. After stabilizing in 2025, statewide real visitor spending will be essentially flat through the end of the decade, UHERO reports.

Other takeaways from the Sept. 20 UHERO forecast include the following:

  • Labor conditions in the rest of the state were largely unaffected in the fires’ aftermath, but there has been some statewide slowing of job growth since the middle of last year. This has eased an unusually tight labor market, although some businesses still face hiring difficulties. Job growth for many industries was weak this year, but will strengthen a bit in 2025.
  • Global economic conditions remain broadly favorable, with considerable variation across countries. The US has remained strong longer than expected, and disinflation progress and softer labor markets now set the stage for the first Federal Reserve interest rate cut. The Bank of Canada has already gone down that road, after the economy slowed significantly. Japan also slowed sharply in 2023, but forward-looking indicators are more positive. The Australian economy continues to languish, with less progress reducing inflation. China continues to underperform, reflecting a weak property market, stagnant consumer spending, and falling prices.
  • After tracking UHERO’s forecasts for several years, the Japanese visitor recovery has slowed, and their number remains at roughly half their pre-COVID level. The weak yen has weighed heavily on daily spending. The currency has regained some lost ground as the Bank of Japan has begun to raise interest rates. Further appreciation should help to boost this market, although it will not play as large a role in Hawaiʻi as it has in the past. Visitors from other countries will add to growth.
  • While the 2024 elections remain six weeks down the road, we can already evaluate the potential economic effects of major policy proposals. In Hawaiʻi, we also take a look at the effects of the recent substantial income tax cuts.
  • Inflation has proven more persistent in Hawaiʻi than in the continental US, because of a slower feedthrough of rents into the consumer price index. But pay raises have exceeded non-shelter inflation so that real purchasing power for many Hawaiʻi residents has grown. Total real personal income will rise 1.4% this year, with a slightly stronger gain in 2025.
  • Hawaiʻi has long seen dismal growth in per capita income, hampering our ability to attract in-migration of new families or to provide opportunities that would prevent out-migration of Hawaiʻi residents. As our society ages and young peoples’ preferences have shifted, the “natural” growth of the population from births being higher than deaths is ending. We will need net in-migration if we are to see significant future labor force growth sufficient to meet looming challenges.
  • These long-term shifts make efforts like the recent Pre–K program expansion and childcare tax credits key to bolstering labor force participation. Even with such support, we see unfavorable demographics holding down long-term growth. Annual additions to the job base will drop toward 0.5%, and real income growth will decelerate to 1–1.5% over the next five years. Real gross domestic product will pick up to 2.8% in 2025, as the drag from soft overall tourism numbers eases and Maui rebuilding kicks into higher gear. Longer term, real per capita income growth will slow towards a trend of about 1% by 2029.
  • Hawaiʻi stands to benefit as the Fed cuts interest rates over the next few years. But there is a risk that the Fed has waited too long to begin cuts, and that slowing already in the pipeline—and related financial fallout—might tip the US economy into a recession. That would be bad news for a Hawaiʻi economy that is heavily reliant on tourism revenue and that needs companies to be able to undertake investment and expansion plans.

My 1-Week Maui Itinerary

My 1-Week Maui Itinerary

Last Updated on September 17, 2024

Maui is always a good idea, whether you’re into outdoor adventure or beach bumming. Here I’m sharing my 1-week Maui itinerary and details of our trip on this Hawaiian paradise.

Spearmint water fringe the coast, misty waterfalls tumble over lush green rockfaces and massive volcanoes loom over quaint beach towns — Maui is the Hawaiian island that most people dream of.  Despite being the second largest island in Hawai’i, Maui still has a laidback feel, with pockets of nature and villages with the aloha spirit.

As I discovered on my trip to Maui, there’s plenty of adventure to be had on this Hawaiian island  — from hiking up a volcano to paragliding , scuba-diving and many more. I’m sharing our 1-week Maui itinerary that will show you the other sides of the country allowing you to enjoy more than just a stroll on the beach.

With only 1 week in Maui, we managed to explore quite a bit of the island and pack in a few exciting adventures. You’ll have enough time to relax on beautiful beaches, go on a few hikes, drive the scenic route to Hana and experience a traditional Hawaiian luau. Even though Maui is spread out, it only takes about three hours to drive from one end of the island to the other. So, you’re never too far from your next waterfall hike, beach day, or poke bowl pit stop.

NOTE: Certain areas of Maui, including Lahaina, have been devastated by wildfires in 2023. Please be sure to double-check whether places are open and accessible and be even more kind, respectful, and patient with the land and the locals than you generally would be.

1-Week Maui Itinerary

Our 1-week Maui itinerary started on the western part of the island; we based ourselves on Wailea Beach, where some of the best hotels in Maui are located. Wailea Beach is around a 35-minute drive from Kahului Airport.

After a long flight to Maui, we took the day to rest and just enjoy Wailea Beach. This wide, sandy haven offers spectacular views of Kaho’olawe, Molokini, and Lana’i (I heard that during the winter, you might even spot whales offshore). The rocky outcroppings at each end of the beach are excellent snorkeling spots when the ocean is calm.

And there is also something for history buffs too. Wailea means “the water of Lea”, the goddess of canoe makers. Prior to resort development, this beach was called Kahamanini, and the name Wailea referred only to the rocky point defining the south end of this beach. The only drawback to Wailea Beach is the bustling crowds but it’s completely free in early the morning. However, you can escape into the water with a Guided Sea Ski Snorkeling Tour and snorkel using an underwater scooter!

Hop on a Hawaiian Sailing Canoe

The Hawaiian sailing canoe holds a special place in Hawaiian culture, deeply intertwined with the community’s way of life and its history. The construction of a canoe was not just a practical endeavor but a significant communal event involving priests, craftsmen, laborers, and helpers from the village. For Hawaiian kings and chiefs, canoe building also symbolized the strength of their armies and the islands’ power.

This revered tradition continues today, and you can experience the ancient Hawaiian seafaring way by hopping on a canoe. We booked this guided tour and had an excellent guide who shared all the history of the canoe; its construction, sailing, and traditional navigation methods.

For a touch of nostalgia, the canoe is launched from the beach using age-old techniques. This was one of our favorite experiences in Maui.

Hike la Perouse

Located at the end of Makena Alanui Road is La Perouse Bay, where you can go on a short but scenic hike. The bay was shaped by a lava flow from around 200 years ago when molten rock oozed from a split vent near the Haleakala volcano. The volcanic activity created the jagged shoreline and natural bay we see today. Most hiking trails in Hawaii mandate that you make reservations before setting off on a hike. La Perouse has no such limitations.

The La Perouse Bay trails wind through rugged lava fields and offer spectacular ocean views. With swimming, snorkeling, and surf opportunities along the way, these trails invite a sense of adventure and freedom for those who prefer more spontaneous explorations. However, it’s worth noting that the facilities here are limited. There are only two portable toilets and a small parking area, so plan your trip to avoid any inconveniences.

1 week in Maui - Hike la Perouse

Chill at Big Beach

Also known as Makena Beach or Oneloa Beach, Big Beach is a secluded alternative to the busier shores of Kāʻanapali and Lāhainā. Despite its growing popularity, Big Beach rarely feels packed (maybe that’s down to its rather generous size). Located south of Wailea, Big Beach stretches over half a mile and has an impressive width, providing ample space to relax without feeling crowded.

However, you should be aware of the beach’s significant on-shore break, which can be hazardous during large south swells. This is not a safe spot for small children or inexperienced swimmers but there are always lifeguards in place.

On a lighter note, I loved it because it’s easy to grab a bite at more pocket-friendly prices. There are several food vendors, often operating from trucks around Makena Park.

Where to Stay Near Wailea Beach

Luxury: wailea beach marriott resort & spa.

Staying here is like having a front-row seat to the mesmerizing ocean and Hawaiian sunsets, all while enjoying a perfectly crafted mai tai. Found between two secluded sandy beaches on Maui’s southern coastline, this hotel offers unparalleled access to lush golfing greens and exceptional shopping.

The resort is a playground for all ages, featuring an array of engaging activities and interactive spaces. There are three championship-level golf courses, a nearly 10,000-square-foot spa, and a lively luau. Check out the rates here .

Luxury: Sheraton Maui

Staying at the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa offers a quintessential Hawaiian experience. Found at Puu Kekaa on Kaanapali Beach, this resort combines adventure, romance, and family fun. While here, you can immerse in indigenous Hawaiian cultural activities, unwind on the white sandy beach, and take in breathtaking Pacific views. Check out the rates here .

Maui itinerary 7 days - Where to Stay Near Wailea Beach

On Day 2 of your Maui itinerary, you will drive along State Highway 378 (Crater Road) to Haleakala National Park – one of the Best National Parks in the USA . The national park is about 1 hour east of Wailea Beach but the road there isn’t quite straight-forward. Your journey will lead you north through a couple of small towns (Maalaea, Waikapu, and Kahului) before heading southeast to the park.

Maui 7 days itinerary - Maui Itinerary Day 2: Haleakala

Drive up to Haleakala Crater

The next day, rise early and drive to the Haleakalā Crater for sunrise. As the third largest volcano in Hawaii, Haleakalā rises majestically to 10,023 feet, covering about three-quarters of the entire island. The volcano is located within the Haleakalā National Park and is one of the best road trips I have ever taken.

You’ll ascend to the summit via the Haleakalā Highway, a ten-mile stretch from the main park entrance to the upper craters and viewing areas. The drive is slow and winding, with numerous pull-offs that offer stunning vistas. This scenic route is not just a drive but an immersive experience, showcasing the grandeur of the beautiful Haleakalā. Witness the sunrise from the summit of Haleakala on this unforgettable tour.

My 1-Week Maui Itinerary

Enjoy a Farm Tour at O’o Farms Kula

I have always made it a habit to do a food tour whenever I visit a new destination. A friend recommended O’o Farms Kula and I was really glad we chose their 3-hour farm-to-table lunch and farmer field tour.

We started our tour in the lush green fields of the farm, where we met our knowledgeable guide. As we strolled along the slopes, we learned about regenerative farming practices and the diverse crops grown here. The breathtaking 3500-foot elevation offers panoramic bi-coastal views and a refreshing upcountry climate that enhances the experience.

After that, we settled into the rustic communal dining area under reclaimed wood pavilions, and tucked into a delectable four-course meal prepared with fresh ingredients sourced from the farm and supplemented by local, sustainably sourced products. Each dish was served family-style, accompanied by stories of its creation and the farm’s practices, all while sipping on O’o coffee.

Tours are held Monday through Friday, from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm. Get more information on the tour here .

Dinner at Nick’s Fishmarket

For dinner, head to Nick’s Fishmarket. The seafood restaurant’s menu offers mouth-watering fresh Hawaiian fish cuisines like opakapaka, mahi mahi, and ahi. Steak enthusiasts will relish the perfectly cooked filet mignon. Under the guidance of Chef Maka, every dish celebrates the island’s most exquisite products and supports local producers. Get more information about the restaurant here .

Maui itinerary 7 days - Dinner at Nick’s Fishmarket

The third day of this Maui itinerary leads to the beautiful town of Kula, 30 minutes from Haleakalā National Park. To reach the town, you’ll drive back along Crater Road for about 13.9 miles.

Go Paragliding at Kula

Kula, the upcountry region of Maui, is one of the best places to paraglide in the world because of the predictable weather conditions. The trade winds that come through Maui help stabilize the wind direction and create conditions suitable for paragliding.

I flew with Proflyght Paragliding, one of the oldest paragliding schools in the world, having been around for 50 years. No experience is needed for a tandem experience. There is no age limit either (Proflyght has flown with passengers aged 3 to 98 years old).

The price for a 3000-foot descent is $185 (10-15 minutes), and the 1000-foot descent (3-5 minutes) is $95. The take-off spot is near Paia area. Here’s my paragliding experience in Maui, Hawaii.

Maui itinerary 7 days - Maui Itinerary Day 3: Kula

Hike in Waihe’e Coastal Dunes and Wetlands Refuge

In the afternoon, we eased into a more relaxing experience, at the Waihe’e Coastal Dunes and Wetlands Refuge . This 277-acre protected area, managed by the Hawai’i Island Land Trust, offers a peaceful escape into Hawaii’s rich natural and cultural history.

Once home to ancient villages, a large fish pond, and sacred heiau, the refuge is now a haven for endangered Hawaiian birds and native plants. The 2.4-mile trail meanders past the former Waihe’e Dairy and other historic buildings, hugging the coastline to the point where Waihe’e Stream meets the ocean.

You can return along the coastal route or opt for a more secluded inland trail through the shaded woodland. While exploring, it’s essential to respect the sacred land, cultural sites, and fragile ecosystems. You can do so by staying on designated paths and not disturbing the structures, rock formations, and heiau that hold deep significance to the Hawaiian people.

1 week in Maui - Waihe’e Coastal Dunes and Wetlands Refuge

Lunch at Mama’s Fish House

After the hike, we went to Mama’s Fish House for a tasty lunch. This iconic restaurant on Maui’s north shore is one of the best in Hawaii and also one of the toughest reservations to get. (Be sure to make a booking in advance!)

The restaurant specializes in fresh, locally caught fish, with prices typically ranging between $65 and $90. Despite its somewhat isolated location, many make the drive out to get a taste of its unique cuisines. Read reviews here.

1 week in Maui - Lunch at Mama’s Fish House

Day 4 of this Maui itinerary will take you to the idyllic Molokini located a few miles off the coast. The underground crater is a beautiful spectacle and to get there, you need to hop on a boat. Luckily, there are so many snorkeling and scuba diving companies that offer daily trips to the area.

Scuba dive or Snorkel off Molokini

Molokini had been on my bucket list for some time, and I finally had the chance to dive there on my Maui trip. I was excited to explore the area, so I connected with Pauline Fiene, an experienced diver and co-owner of Mike Severns Diving . That morning, Pauline and dive master A.J. took the time to chat with everyone individually to understand our skills and preferences, making sure we felt safe.

As we plunged into the waters, we were greeted by a stunning vertical wall of volcanic rock that dropped nearly 300 feet into the dark abyss below. Vibrant angelfish and pufferfish darted among the coral caves and rock tunnels, while patches of green and pink corals bloomed against the rugged, dark grey slopes.

The reef here is one of the healthiest in Hawaii, thanks to its remote location three miles from the shore. So, if you want an unforgettable snorkeling experience or scuba dive, Molokini is the perfect spot to do so in Maui. Read about our Maui scuba diving experience here. I highly recommend booking this tour.

1 week in Maui - Maui Itinerary Day 4: Molokini

Sunset Sailing Cruise

In the evening, prepare for a magical experience as you cruise along the coast of Molokini at sunset. As the sun dips toward the horizon, the sky transforms into a vivid canvas of hues, reflecting off the calm waters surrounding the ancient volcanic crater. The serene atmosphere is perfect for unwinding, with the gentle sway of the boat and the warm breeze brushing against your skin.

On my trip to Molokini, I joined this guided tour from Maalaea and it was a beautiful experience. Our trip was accompanied by soothing live music and an assortment of beverages. As we glided past the crescent-shaped Molokini, we spotted dolphins and sea turtles frolicking near the beach.

1 week in Maui - Sunset Sailing Cruise

Experience a Hawaiian Luau

A Maui luau is a vibrant and culturally rich celebration that offers a glimpse into the traditions and history of Hawaii. Set against the stunning backdrop of beaches, lush gardens, or oceanfront resorts, a luau is a sensory feast of music, dance, and authentic Hawaiian cuisine. Luau are festivities deeply rooted in Hawaiian culture, often held to mark significant family milestones like a baby’s first birthday, a graduation, or a wedding.

On my trip, I went to the legendary Feast of Lele for their famous luau, which combines gourmet interpretations of traditional dishes with curated wine pairings. We feasted on Hawaiian delicacies like kālua pig cooked in an imu (earth oven), haupia (coconut pudding), and poi. Sadly, the Feast at Lele location was destroyed by the Lahaina fires and remains closed today.

Other luaus with great reviews include the Myths of Maui Lūʻau at the Royal Lāhainā Resort, Drums of the Pacific at the Hyatt Regency, and the famed Old Lāhainā Lūʻau.

Maui itinerary - Experience a Hawaiian Luau

Day 5 of your Maui itinerary will lead through one of the island’s most beautiful roads. The drive along the 65-mile road is a staple for adventurers, groups, and families visiting Maui. Your trip will culminate in Hana, a beautiful town in the eastern part of the island.

Drive the Road to Hana

If there was ever a time to truly embrace the journey as much as the destination, this is it. The Road to Hana is a 65-mile journey that winds from the charming town of Pāʻia to the remote eastern tip of Maui. With over 600 hairpin curves, 59 bridges, and some pulse-quickening one-way stretches, the road snakes through lush rainforest landscapes straight out of a dream.

Along the way, you’ll encounter waterfalls, hidden jungle hikes, fruit stands, black sand beaches, and even roadside vendors selling delectable snacks. The drive to Hana is an experience packed with stunning scenery and more things to do and taste than you could possibly fit into a single day. I suggest booking the Road to Hana Adventure Tour with Pickup for a more personalized small group experience.

Maui itinerary - Maui Itinerary Day 5: Hana

Stop for a Coffee at Paia Bay Coffee

You’ll need a pick-me-up coffee ahead of your long drive to Hana. The best place to grab one is Paia Bay Coffee & Bar in Paia Town. The café feels like a secret oasis, set amidst a lush tropical garden.

This vibrant spot is a favorite among locals, yogis, surfers, as well as road-trippers going to Hana. The chic café serves some of the best coffee in Maui and their snacks are delicious. I recommend you try their chicken sandwiches on your visit. Check out the reviews here .

Visit the Twin Falls

The Twin Falls are the first easily accessible waterfall and pool on the Road to Hana. This serene spot features a scenic road that meanders for nearly a mile alongside Ho’olawa Stream, leading you through a lush jungle. The well-maintained, graded, and graveled path splits into two footpaths after about half a mile, directing you towards the two main tributary streams.

If you plan on visiting these falls, please be mindful of potential high water or flash-floods after heavy rains. Beyond the stunning waterfalls, there’s a delightful food truck near the entrance, where you can enjoy refreshing popsicles with actual sugarcane sticks. The truck also sells fresh home-grown fruits, smoothies, cane juice, and homemade baked goods. Visit the Twin Falls on this tour.

Maui itinerary - Visit the Twin Falls

Go Surfing at Ho’okipa Bay Beach Park

Often hailed as the “Mecca” of the windsurfing world, Ho’okipa Beach Park is a legendary destination for windsurfing enthusiasts. Professional windsurfing competitions are held here regularly, and on most windy days, you can watch pros effortlessly glide and perform breathtaking maneuvers. The beach isn’t just a haven for watersport lovers; it also offers an incredible natural spectacle.

The exposed reef running along the shoreline, frequently attracts Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles (Honu). Many of these can be seen bobbing just beyond the waves. For those looking for a closer encounter, a few turtles can be found lounging on the sand near the lookout cliff.

These blend in so well with the surrounding boulders that it’s easy to miss them. At sunset, the scene is even more magical, with turtles and admirers gathering at the shore for a tranquil evening rest.

Maui itinerary - Surfing at Ho’okipa Bay Beach Park

Check Out the Black Sand Beach at Waiʻānapanapa State Park

Waiʻānapanapa State Park is one of the must-sees on your way to Hana. The breathtaking park is a natural wonder with nearly 360-degree panoramic views of the surroundings. The iconic Black Sand Beach is one of the most dramatic and one of the highlights of the park.

Although, it is more like small black pebbles than fine sand here. While the beach is not ideal for sunbathing, its striking beauty makes it feel like a living postcard. Despite its popularity, the beach rarely feels crowded, as most visitors often take a quick look and drive off.

Where to Stay in Hana

Luxury: hana kai maui.

Hana Kai is a quintessential retreat with 17 beautifully furnished vacation condominiums that provide breathtaking views of Hana Bay and the Pacific Ocean. 7 days in Maui itinerary - Where to Stay in Hana

After a glorious road trip on one of the island’s most picturesque stretches of tarmac, you will continue south on day 6. Like on day 5, you’ll make multiple stops along the way to enjoy some of Maui’s most explosive experiences.

Stop at Waioka Pond

Waioka Pond (Waioaoaka which means “open mouth of fresh water”) is a stunning gem along the Hana coastline. This pristine pool is not for the faint of heart; reaching it requires a combination of scrambling, climbing, and off-trail hiking. However, the effort to get there is well worth it.

Once you navigate the rugged trails and reach the pond’s edge, you’ll be greeted by a breathtaking scene. Here, you’ll see the blue ocean crashing against the rocks nearby and the dramatic, rugged landscape all around. For those adventurous souls, there are several hiking trails down the cliffs.

The easiest is right at the mauka end of the pool. Please wear sturdy shoes with good grip to avoid any slips on these challenging trails. Please be advised that the area is prone to flash floods, particularly during the rain season. On this self-driving audio tour of the Road to Hana, you’ll make a stop at Waioka Pond.

7 days in Maui itinerary - Maui Itinerary Day 6: Drive back South

Hike the Pipiwai Trail

The Pipiwai Trail is the quintessential hike for those seeking a blend of dramatic natural beauty and diverse landscapes. Spanning just 1.8 miles, this easy trail meanders beside a series of pools and waterfalls, each framed by the vibrant greenery of a tropical rainforest. The scenery evolves as you progress, transitioning from lush foliage to a serene bamboo forest that feels like stepping into another world.

It culminates at the base of the magnificent Waimoku Falls with a sheer cliff face. While the Pipiwai Trail offers a visual feast and a range of experiences, it’s worth noting that it’s one of the most crowded in Maui. So, be prepared to share the trail with other hikers.

Maui 7 days itinerary - Hike the Pipiwai Trail

Check Out Ke’anae Peninsula

The Ke’anae Peninsula is a brief detour off the Hana Highway. The peninsula offers breathtaking views of the ocean crashing against jagged lava rock, making it a must on your Maui itinerary. As you approach, the peninsula’s dramatic landscape will have already captured your attention from various lookouts along the road.

1 week in Maui - Ke’anae Peninsula

Grab a Quick Bite at Sunday’s Banana Bread

As you’re leaving the Ke’anae Peninsula, be sure to stop by Aunty Sandy’s Banana Bread. The snack stand is located on the left side of the road near the church. It is renowned for its warm, fresh-out-of-the-oven banana bread, baked daily with the perfect blend of sweetness and a hint of nostalgia.

At this point, you’re probably feeling a bit hungry, and there’s no better way to satisfy those cravings than with a slice of this iconic banana bread. Besides their delicious bread, the stand also sells other goodies like chili dogs, Kalua pork sandwiches, and smoothies, among others.  Check out the reviews here .

It’s time to drive back to the airport. It takes around 2.5 hours to drive to the Kahului Airport from Hana. However, most flights don’t leave Maui until the afternoon, so you have plenty of time to get there. But if you love traveling on your terms then chartering a private jet with Air Charter Service is a no-brainer.

1 week in Maui - Maui Itinerary Day 7: Prepare to Head Home!

Maui Travel Guide

To get to Maui, most people fly into Kahului Airport (OGG), the island’s main airport and primary entry point. To get here, you’ll likely arrive via a connecting flight from Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. It’s Hawaii’s main airport with nonstop flights from major US cities like Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Chicago, and others.

Direct flights to Maui are also available from select locations, and round-trip tickets from New York begin from around $450, depending on the season. If you’re planning on staying on Maui’s west side, the small commuter Kapalua Airport (JHM) is a wonderful alternative, especially if you’re planning to book a private plane .

For those planning to stay on the east side, Hāna Airport (HNM) offers flights to and from Honolulu but lacks public transport, so a car or prearranged shuttle is necessary. Regardless of where you enter from, Maui is easy to navigate and you only need a couple of hours to get from one end to another.

Search for flights to Maui Kahului Airport here.

Maui itinerary - How to Get to Maui

How to Get around Maui

As the second-largest Hawaiian island, Maui is a blend of breathtaking scenery and rural charm. To truly experience its charms, renting a car is your best bet—trust me, you’ll want the freedom to explore Maui at your own pace. And while the allure of a 4×4 Jeep or a sleek Mustang convertible might be tempting, the truth is you don’t need either here.

Sure, they do look great in photos but often come with a hefty price tag because they are in high demand. The good news is that you don’t need a high-clearance vehicle for 99 percent of Maui’s roads, including the famous Road to Hana.

A sedan or SUV will do just fine, comfortably cruising from sandy beaches to volcanic peaks without missing a beat (or draining your wallet). For car rentals, we always use Discover Cars , as they consistently offer the best rates and customer service, with rentals typically starting from as low as $42 per day.

Search for car rentals in Kahului here!

Maui itinerary - How to Get around Maui by car

Taking a rideshare or taxi cab is also an effective way to get around Maui but requires a little patience and planning. While you’ll easily find Uber and Lyft on the island, don’t expect the rapid response you’d get in a bustling city like New York. Rideshare drivers here are fewer and often elusive, especially during peak hours or at night.

Taxis are also widely available but come with some challenges. If you plan on staying in remote areas of the island, you should know that getting a cab is just as hard. Also, taxis charge around $3 per mile and given that Maui is deceptively large, trips across the island could cost more than you might expect.

Also keep in mind that while your driver might be able to drop you off at a remote beach or trailhead, getting picked up again isn’t guaranteed. So, plan with your driver or get their contact if you are to use this mode of transport. Also, here’s a list of the travel apps I use to simplify my trips.

Maui itinerary - How to Get around Maui by taxi

Taking the bus is the most pocket-friendly way to get from point A to point B in Maui. The island’s bus service covers all routes across the island. A one-way ride costs just $2, but for greater flexibility, you can purchase an unlimited day pass for $4 or opt for monthly passes if you’re staying longer.

The bus is particularly effective for journeys along the west coast, servicing popular areas like Kaʻanapali, Lāhainā, and Kīhei with ease. However, be prepared for a slower pace; while buses are generally on time, they can occasionally run late and make frequent stops. You can easily track the live locations of the buses here . You might also want to book a bus ticket online here.

For a fun and nostalgic way to get around Maui, why not hop on a trolley? Two charming routes cater to shopaholics: the West Maui Shopping Express and the South Maui Shopping Express. Both routes have trolleys running daily and offering a breezy, scenic way to hop between the island’s best shopping spots.

If you’re staying in the Kaʻanapali area, the free trolley makes it easy to explore, with stops at hotels, shops, and golf courses. If you need to get between Kaʻanapali and Lāhainā, there’s a nearby shuttle that runs daily from 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. It costs just $2 each way, making it easy to enjoy both areas.

Maui itinerary - How to Get around Maui by trolley

Seeing Maui on the back of a scooter or bicycle is an experience you’ll never forget. Maui’s spread-out layout means that cycling and scootering are more effective for getting between two nearby towns. However, the biking culture here is rather downbeat, so don’t expect the same vibe you’d find on Oʻahu.

You can rent a bike or e-bike from local shops in Lāhainā, Kīhei, or other beach towns. Rental prices are affordable and practical, with many shops starting from about $75 a week for a laid-back beach cruiser to $250 for an electric bike. For bike rentals, I recommend Boss Frog’s and West Maui Cycles .

If you’re up for a bit more speed and flair, scooters or mopeds are a fun alternative, especially along the coast where they really shine. Rentals start at around $60 a day or $350 a week. For moped or scooter rentals, please check out Island Motion .

Maui itinerary 7 days - How to Get around Maui by bike, moped

The best time to visit Maui depends on what you’re looking for, but you really can’t go wrong any time of year. Temperatures in Maui are consistently pleasant, ranging from the high 70s to the mid-80s. While Maui’s rainy season is typically from November through April and the dry season from May through September, these aren’t set in stone.

So, don’t be surprised when you see rain in June. For the whale-watching season, plan your trip between November and May. During that window, you’ll likely spot North Pacific humpback whales grace the island’s waters.

If you’re looking to avoid crowds and high prices, consider the shoulder seasons of April through May and September through November. These windows offer lovely weather without the heavy influx of summer and winter travelers. The hurricane season in Maui runs from June to November, with the highest activity typically in July, August, and September.

Maui itinerary 7 days - Best Time to Visit Maui

Driving in Maui is pretty easy and straightforward. You won’t find a lot of traffic or rude drivers. Road users here are much calmer and no one really pointlessly hoots. It’s not a big island, so you can easily drive from one end of the island to another in about three hours. Just download the Maui map on Google Maps to access it offline.

I rely on DiscoverCars.com for car rentals around the globe. Their search engine compares rates from all major providers, consistently offering the best deals and services. Find car rentals in Maui here!

Maui itinerary 1 week - Driving in Maui

Maui is generally considered safe for travelers. The locals here largely depend on the thriving tourism industry, so they never do anything to comprise it. I’ve been to the Maui a couple of times, and never had anything bad happen to me.

However, I still recommend that you practice common-sense safety measures, like safeguarding your items and being aware of one’s surroundings for a safe trip.

Maui itinerary 7 days - Is it Safe to Visit Maui

For this trip to Maui, you’ll be spending most of your time outside, so definitely pack lots of sun-proof gear. KEEN footwear or normal sandals are also really useful for walking on beaches strewn with seashells or corals.

Snorkel mask and fins will come in useful as you’ll be using them a lot here. Also, be sure to bring your spinning reels or other gear that you might not be able to find on the island.

Packing List for Maui:

  • SPF 70 Sunscreen
  • Mosquito repellent
  • Snorkel mask and fins
  • UPF50+ rash guard swim shirt
  • Quick-dry towels
  • KEEN covered sandals
  • GoPro for waterproof photos/videos
  • Quick-dry t-shirts
