Charters Scotland

The rugged beauty of Scotland is of World renown. A yacht charter in Scotland is one of the best ways of exploring the country. The West Coast is sparsely inhabited and many places are only accessible by sea. For this reason, a bareboat yacht charter is an increasingly popular way of visiting the area. The scenery is spectacular and the wildlife unusual and diverse. There are lots of harbours and anchorages. We would challenge anyone who charters Scotland not to be impressed.

Charter West Scotland

One of the great things about Scottish charters is the unrivalled opportunity for peace and solitude. As anyone who has experienced the delights of a Yacht charter West Coast Scotland will testify, there are none of the crowds that are the norm in other popular areas of yacht charter UK. A cruise with Scottish Yacht Charter allows you the freedom to enjoy deserted anchorages should you wish to. The numerous islands to be found in this area mean that there is usually somewhere offering shelter whatever the direction of the wind. However one of the great things about Scottish charters is that, if you wish, there are plenty of charming coastal towns and villages offering opportunities for reprovisioning, visiting local attractions or just a welcoming pub.

Bavaria Yacht Charter

We are ideally placed to offer the perfect location for your yacht charter west coast. Our small fleet of yachts is perfect for Scottish charters, being relatively new and fully equipped. Colour plotters, electric anchor windlasses and single line reefing will all enhance the experience of your Scottish Yacht Charter. As anyone familiar with this area will testify, the diesel heating found on all our boats can be very useful on occasions. For your visit ashore, our yachts are equipped with inflatable tenders and outboard motors at no extra charge. All of these features will help to make your sailing charter Scotland a memorable one.

A widely held misconception is that it always rains in Scotland. Aficionados of cruising the West Coast of Scotland will testify to the long periods of settled weather it is often possible to encounter. Of all the yacht charter UK areas Scottish charters are the ones blessed with the longest daylight hours. In midsummer a lucky sailor who charters Scotland will find that even at midnight it is often not entirely dark. Certainly the weather will usually allow barefoot yacht charters, if that is your fancy. As a result of the effects of the Gulf Stream, temperatures are a good deal higher than is generally appreciated.

Bareboat Charter Scotland

One of the considerations when selecting Scottish charters is the ease of access to our home ports. Craobh Haven and Largs marinas are easily accessible by road, train or even air. Our summer base at Craobh Haven is about 2 hours drive from Glasgow or Edinburgh and is approximately 20 miles from Oban, which is the nearest rail link. Largs Marina, our winter base is about 20 miles from Glasgow which in addition to road and rail links has its own airport. Your yachting charters Scotland will start and end with the minimum inconvenience as a result of the locations we have chosen. Anyone who is a client of ours and who charters Scotland regularly will appreciate the ease of access our sites offer for your sailing charter Scotland.

Boat Charter Scotland

We hope that we have tempted you to sample the delights of yacht charters Scotland. Our aim is to ensure that anyone experiencing charters Scotland does so in an enjoyable and hassle free manner. Whether your holiday aim is to discover quiet unspoiled anchorage's, or to undertake longer more challenging cruises, we hope that your experience will make you agree with us that a Charters Scotland cruise is not one to be missed.

Some Useful Ideas for Sailing Scotland’s West Coast

west coast scotland yacht charter

We will start our cruise in the beautiful tourist port town of Cascais on the outskirts of Lisbon. We will visit Porto, we will stop at the marina right at the mouth of the Douro River, not far from the famous Port wine cellars, which we will visit. We end up in the Spanish port city of La Coruña, home to the world’s oldest lighthouse still in operation. Port & Paella, sun and sailing – a winning combination!

Discovery adventure sail full of interesting, exotic places. It’s not often that you visit four countries on two continents on one holiday! The sailing adventure is planned in such a way that there is time to wander the streets of the towns and cities visited. Each place is completely different, with a different atmosphere and a different culture. Sailing in the Gibraltar area is a powerful experience in itself due to the current, weather and heavy boat traffic – great for revising your col regs! Malaga is easily accessible by plane, as is Lisbon for all major airports.

Three days of ocean crossing to the island of eternal spring. We will sail from Arrecife, stopping at the beautiful and rustic Isla Graciosa, north of Lanzarote followed by Islas Selvagenas which is a Portuguese nature reserve comprising of several small islands about 130 miles northwest of Lanzarote. The next stop will be Porto Santo, a small neighbour of Madeira with a beautiful, almost empty golden beach of several miles. Once on Madeira we will visit some of the marinas in the south of the island and end up in Funchal, the capital of Madeira. The entire trip should be less than 400 miles. Informal coaching on the way, keeping your skills fresh in the winter months.

Jersey – Dublin – Largs

A brisk, action-packed cruise across the English Channel and the Irish Sea.

The area of Brittany and the Channel Islands has one of the largest tidal ranges in Europe, with very strong tidal currents. Yachting paradise and hell at the same time. Amazing sailing experience and good experience.

Who hasn’t sailed the Biscay, it’s as if he wasn’t even a yachtsman. The Bay of Biscay is called the weather kitchen for Europe. The weather here changes quite quickly and with stronger winds, bigger waves can form. That’s why we count on a 10-day cruise so that we can wait for the optimal moment to set sail. The cruise itself should take about 3 days. If there is time left, we will take some cruises along the coast of Brittany around Brest. Both La Coruña and Brest are harbor pearls of the Atlantic Ocean.

Clyde Yacht Charters

Welcome to Clyde Yacht Charters!

Clyde Yacht Charters operates out of Largs Yacht Haven on the west coast of mainland Scotland, in the heart of the Firth of Clyde.

Stretching from the tip of the Kintyre peninsula in the south to Loch Long and the Gare Loch in the north, and encompassing the islands of Arran, Bute and Cumbrae, the Clyde offers some of the best sailing grounds in Scotland, and arguably the world. As well as amazing sailing, the Clyde is home to much fascinating wildlife including seals, a huge range of seabirds, the occasional whale, basking sharks and porpoises. We have also had several experiences of dolphins playing in the bow wave – incredible! There is no shortage of dining opportunities and you will find a huge range of hotels and restaurants, many with visitor moorings, offering award-winning dining featuring the freshest possible seafood.

In fact, there is so much to say about the Firth of Clyde that we have given it its own page.

Clyde Yacht Charters was established in 2021 by three friends and keen sailors with many years (decades!) of sailing experience, particularly in the Clyde and the west coast of Scotland. We have been involved in the chartering business for several years.

The yachts we charter belong to us and we have enjoyed sailing them as friends and with our families for several seasons. We pride ourselves on knowing our boats inside out, and demand high standards of comfort and maintenance – we expect no less for our charterers than we do for ourselves. Each boat has an ongoing annual programme of maintenance and upgrades. All our boats are coded to MCA Cat 2.

We would be happy to discuss any issues, offer advice on the Clyde sailing grounds – from planning your trip to destinations, anchorages, facilities and restaurants.

The boats are getting ready and so are we!

We are very much looking forward to meeting our charterers in the next few weeks and months.

What Our Clients Say

The boat handled really well. Fantastic trip and extremely helpful staff! Would definitely recommend. Thanks for the amazing experience!

– Malcolm, Bute

This was our first time renting a (skippered) yacht and we couldn’t wish for anything more. A beautiful, clean yacht, staff that would go the extra mile for us and a special thanks to our skipper who made this trip unforgettable!

– Aileen, Haddington

Don't use this one

Is it possible to adjust the price if we aren’t looking to book for the whole week.

Yes, we try to be as flexible as possible and if we can we will.

What’s the difference between bareboat and skippered?

Bareboat means you skipper the yacht yourself, although you will need sailing experience and a licence. A skippered yacht comes with a professional captain who will take care of the sailing and the boat for you.

Do we need to take care of food and drinks ourselves?

The boat is hired as a self-catering accommodation. A catering / drinks package is available upon request. The skipper is not the chef (trust us).

Do I need insurance?

We strongly recommend that you have travel insurance with coverage for sailing as an activity.

What do we need to bring ourselves?

You are required to provide your own wet weather gear, please consider all forecasts.

What is expected from us on returning the yacht?

The yacht must be returned cleaned and all bedding is to be placed in the laundry bags provided.

How far can we travel?

The choice is yours depending on the length of your charter.

Are children allowed?

Yes, but at your own risk!

Are pets allowed?

“From the initial booking enquiry to unloading the boat I felt we were in safe hands. The two boats, Aurora and Deep Blue and the skippers performed great, the weather wasn’t perfect for sailing but we made the most of what we had. For anybody wanting to try sailing on the West Coast, do try Clyde Yacht Charters! .”

Clyde yacht charters..

We offer skippered or bareboat charters.

We would be happy to discuss any issues, offer advice on the Clyde sailing grounds – from planning your trip to destinations, anchorages, facilities and restaurants.

Scotland Yacht Charter

Scotland yacht charter is at present underrated. While quite popular for many yacht charterers, particularly the experienced sailor, yacht charters in this beautiful country are sure to increase steadily in the next few years. The simple reason for this is that a yacht charter is Scotland, is a breathtaking and exhilarating experience.

The dramatic scenery, gorgeous anchorages, islands with castles, lochs and Celtic Fairy tales will keep you intrigued through your yacht charter vacation. The mystical history of Scotland is just about as exciting as the sailing in Firth of Clyde.

In the Hebrides you will find towering Highland mountain scenes and pristine villages around protected harbors. The cruising in this area can be challenging due to large tides, currents and occasional Atlantic Ocean storms. It is, however, possible to find inside passages to most of the more interesting areas.

Oban offers a popular yacht charter base. From there you can easily reach the Isle of Skye, Mull, Eigg and Rhum. Scotch whiskey lovers will have heard these names before. There are numerous good anchorages, on most of the Islands, otherwise Portee is a great harbor on the Isle of Skye.

If you'd prefer safe and stress-free cruising, head toward The Clyde Estuary where you'll find picturesque ports and typical warm, west Coast hospitality. On your yacht charter, you'll encounter abundant wildlife on Scotland's West Coast. In the Kilbrannan Sound between Arran and Kintyre, you can often spot basking sharks. If you are fortunate, you'll also see whales, Porpoises and dolphins, not to mention the massive variety of seabirds. Ailsa Craig is home to the country's largest colony of gannet.

The Caledonian Canal cuts through the heart of Scotland via a chain of locks and is a great area to charter a power boat. These locks include the famous Lock Ness, and the fabled Nessie, and rugged scenery of old castles and sweeping mountains sprinkled with purple heather.

The selection of activities in Scotland is as extensive onshore as afloat aboard your charter boat. Towns brimming with boutiques and shopping, you will not find. Scotland's charm is in its picturesque rolling landscape and centuries of history. Take a scenic walk through the hills or enjoy a round of golf, in one of the many public village courses.

The main yacht charter season in Scotland runs from April to October, when the country is not frozen solid. The most settled weather is usually in May and June. The types of yacht charter available in Scotland include motor, sailing, bareboat charter, skippered, crewed yachts, catamaran, power boat, sailboat, and even the occasional luxury yacht charter.

A yacht charter in Scotland will be a rewarding experience. Trace your Ancestors back to their roots or enjoy the fascinating charm of a land that's seen so much.

THE ASYC 5 STAR SERVICES

All our members:

  • Meet the safety requirements of the DTp Code of Practice for Small Commercial Vessels.
  • Offer the highest standard of equipment and service.
  • Are committed to offering the best in yachting holidays and tuition.
  • Offer protection for forward payments.
  • In the unlikely event of a dispute, offer free, legally binding arbitration through the Association.

The Association of Scottish Yacht Charters are a group of charter companies and sailing schools operating in Scotland and offering the widest choice of sailing holidays available in Scotland, including bareboat charter, skippered charter, and sailing tuition..

Why choose an ASYC member? The companies offering sailing in Scotland are generally small, where the way of life is as important as running a successful business. The service is personal with a close attention to the customers needs. However, the members of the ASYC also work together to offer a network of help and support, reassuring should there be a problem before or during your holiday. In addition, for peace of mind payments can be protected by making use of the ASYC Trust account and in the unlikely event of any disagreement, the ASYC offer a free arbitration service. All ASYC members subscribe to a Code of Conduct, available to view on the website, and use the MCA regulations as a starting point in equipping the boats. If you choose an ASYC member, whether bareboat or skippered, you will find a full complement of safety equipment for all members of the crew, up to date Admiralty paper charts of the sailing area along with up to date electronic navigation equipment. For your comfort most boats will now offer hot and cold water, fridges and heating. Full catering equipment is supplied and many companies can also offer bedding, towels, and waterproofs for a small extra charge, something to be considered if traveling far. A full inventory will be available prior to your booking.

Traditional Croft

Our members are based mainly on the Clyde and the West Coast , with many moving between both locations. The reasons are simple: these waters rank amongst the finest sailing areas in the world. The Clyde has bags of choice, from the bustle of the modern marinas on the mainland with all the facilities you would expect to, moving west, the islands of Cumbrae, Bute, and Arran to explore and further afield, Loch Fyne and the charming west coast fishing port of Tarbert . Distances between ports and anchorages are small with plenty of shelter should conditions deteriorate. To the west of the Clyde lie the waters of the west coast and the Hebrides . A passage there from the Clyde could be a rounding of the Mull of Kintyre or the shorter route, through the Crinan Canal . Although only eight miles long the Crinan Canal is one of the prettiest canal journeys in the UK and, for the west coast afficiando, the excitement as the gates open to lock out into Loch Crinan is palpable. However, it is not essential to make the passage to get here as there are several companies based throughout the area and many of the Clyde based companies also have a west coast base of operations during the summer months. It is hard to due justice to Scotland's west coast as a cruising ground. A lifetime could be spent sailing here and there will still be new anchorages to be found and places to explore. The islands of the Inner and Outer Hebrides offer sheltered sailing, stunning scenery, and a wealth of anchorages. There are hills to climb, castles, ruins, and a fascinating history to explore. There is an abundance of wildlife from dolphins, whales, and seals, to otters and deer , and of course the birds, including large seabird colonies , and rarities such as the iconic great northern diver and the majestic sea eagle . Marinas and pontoon berths are few and far between once you leave the mainland but there are welcoming harbours, many with moorings available. Use your anchor and the choice is almost limitless. To see the Western Isles at their best, it has to be by sea.

Gannets

There are many ways to get afloat with a member of the ASYC. For the more experienced there is a wide range of yachts available for bareboat charter . If you don't want the responsibility or just fancy a more stress free sailing experience, there are several members offering skippered charter . Here you will be able to sit back and relax or take part in the sailing, whichever suits your mood. Many members offer themed weeks such as wildlife cruises or trips such as to St Kilda or the Faeroes . If you want to learn to sail or improve your skills, several companies also offer the full range of RYA practical and theory courses.

A full list of members , contact information, and a location map are in the website. Check the late availability page for special offers!

For choice and for peace of mind, it has to be a member of the ASYC!

Enjoy a relaxing week onboard your own private yacht, exploring Scotlands west coast, including the Firth of Clyde, the Mull of Kintyre and the surrounding islands of Arran, Jura and Islay.

Whether sailing along Scotland's west coast has always been on your bucket list, or if you are simply looking for a UK ‘staycation’ destination a little closer to home this summer - look no further than a sailing holiday on the west coast of Scotland with The Big Sail.

Contact The Big Sail for your tailor-made quote for the perfect family sailing holiday or group yacht charter.

SCOTLAND, UK SAMPLE 7-DAY SAILING ITINERARY

Arrival & check-in at largs and sail to cairnbaan.

Set sail from Largs, a quaint town conveniently situated on the west coast of the Scottish mainland, not far from Glasgow. Enjoy the scenic sailing route across the Firth of Clyde and up Loch Fyne to Ardrishaig, and the entrance to the Crinan Canal. This fist leg will allow you to stop off at Tabert, a naturally beautiful town that is home to Robert the Bruce’s 14th Century castle. Enjoy history, nature and excellent seafood in this great little gem of the Scottish Coast before retiring to the canal-side village of Cairnbaan.

ISLE OF JURA

Crinan & isle of juna.

On your first full day on board, enjoy a cruise down the Crinan Canal towards the enticing views of the Inner Hebrides . Stop off for lunch in the picturesque coastal village of Crinan before sailing down the Sound of Jura. In Crinan, you can enjoy some Scottish history with walks through the green Knapdale Forest, Crinan Wood and take a hike up to the highest point of the area at Castle Dounie. Once you’ve taken in all the beauty, carry on sailing south, to the Isle of Jura. This sparsely populated location is a great opportunity to make the most of your yacht’s galley and enjoy dinner on board, whilst watching the sun go down over Jura.

PORT ELLEN, ISLAY

Port ellen, islay.

As you sail into Port Ellen, the striking coastline and the uniquely designed Carraig Fhada Lighthouse will greet you. There are good pontoon facilities here so you’ll enjoy a walk-ashore mooring for a change. The best way to see the island is on two wheels – rent bikes and take a leisurely ride to visit nearby villages and beaches, before retiring in the evening into one of the many pubs for a hearty meal and some live music.

Islay will be a highlight for whiskey lovers, with the Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroaig distilleries all located just a few miles away from Port Ellen harbour. Islay is also a great location for horse riding, hiking and golfing. Depending on when you travel, it is worth researching the various festivals that this vibrant community frequently organises.

CAMPBELLTOWN

Mull of kintyre and campbelltown.

Sailing south-east from Islay, this will be the longest and most challenging sailing of your entire trip – but it’s worth it! After you sail around the Mull of Kintyre on the south-westerly point of the Kintyre Peninsula, a stop off in the town of Campbeltown is a great opportunity to get to know this peaceful corner of Scotland. Once known as ‘the Whisky capital of the world’, now only three distilleries remain here and only one (Springbank distillery) still offers tours, so it is worth booking if you want to learn more about the Kintyre peninsula’s long history of whisky production and try a few drams. This is also another great spot for golfers with the Machrihanish, Machrihanish Dunes and Dunaverty courses nearby.

From one stunning anchorage to another, explore the incredible Arran as you near the end of your journey. Arrive in Lochranza , a bustling port town, on the north coast of the island. The rugged shores of Loch Ranza will certainly be one of the most scenic stops of your Scottish west coast sailing holiday. Towering mountains and a ruined 12th Century castle make this the budding travel photographers dream! After a day of exploring, retire into one of the many pubs to feed your hungry sailing crew! .

ISLE OF ARRAN

Isle of arran.

Before sailing back to Largs on the mainland, spend the last day of your west-coast Scottish sailing adventure exploring the Isle of Arran in depth. For a bit of culture, history and beautiful scenery, visit Brodick Castle with it’s impressive gardens, woodland, waterfalls, and of course the grand castle itself. If you’re feeling like a challenge, you could also take on a hike through the wilderness and up to the summit of Goatfell – the Isle of Arran’s highest point! You’ll need to set off early and pack plenty of supplies – the hike takes approximately 3 hours to the summit, but it’s worth it with rewarding views stretching to Jura and Ireland. If you want to stay closer to the boat, you can always visit the Island Cheese company and Arran Brewery to sample some of Arran’s finest cheese and craft beer and perhaps buy some local produce to take home with you! By around mid-afternoon, set sail towards Largs, for your final night on board in the marina.

Check out is 9am Saturday morning!

Guide to Scotland

Breathtaking, distinctive and truly exhilarating

Offering dramatic scenery, gorgeous anchorages and a remarkable history, Scotland is home to some of the most unique and beautiful yachting grounds in the world. Enjoy cruising amid the wild, romantic beauty of the Western isles and immerse yourself in some of the most unspoilt scenery that the United Kingdom  has to offer.

The perfect place to adventure and relax, there is a mythical quality enriched by Scotland’s striking west coast, beautiful cities, lochs and castles. Scotland’s charm is also in its picturesque rolling landscape and centuries of history, guests have the opportunity to take a scenic walk through the fascinating hills or feast their eyes on the incredible vistas from their very own superyacht rental. In the Hebrides you will find towering highland mountain scenes as well as pristine villages around protected harbors which is perfect for any charter vacation.

Famously an incredibly tranquil place to sail, Scotland is also fantastic for adventure and wildlife enthusiasts. Along the dramatic coastline, the area is teeming with wildlife in the water from porpoises, seals, dolphins and, if you're lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of orca and minke whales. On land, you will find wild stags roaming through the wilderness as well as an abundance of wild birds from the Scottish crossbill and puffins to sea eagles circling overhead.

A popular yacht charter base is the beautiful and unique Oban, the gateway town of the Hebrides. From here, guests can head around the northern tip of Mull where you can explore the entirely volcanic island of Stiffa which has been completely uninhabited since the 17th century. From sea caves to century old Abbeys, the north of Scotland has plenty of interesting sites to keep all guests on a luxury yacht charter  entertained.

Sailing South you will find the isle of Jura where guests can enjoy more untouched scenery and glacial beaches, most of which are inaccessible except by boat. Popular activities here include heli-fishing on the numerous hill lochs, salmon fishing and deer-stalking which can all be completed just a stone’s throw from your yacht.

Scotland also boasts incredible golf courses and whisky tours for any connoisseurs who would like to experience how it all began. Three of the world’s iconic whisky names are found on the Scottish isle of Islay: Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroig and guests can enjoy private tours and tastings at all three. Another popular activity visitors can embark on during their vacation is to play golf at the renowned Machrie. As one of Scotland’s most highly acclaimed courses offering 18-hole championship links for golfers of all abilities and ages to enjoy.

Filled with mesmerizing scenery, outstanding and unique activities and picture-perfect vistas, a superyacht charter around Scotland does not disappoint. If you are interested in a private crewed yachting vacation in this region, start planning your next vacation with a recommended yacht charter broker today.
