One very attractive anchoring spot near Split is the Blue Lagoon, which is located between Veliki and Mali Krknjaš, and the much larger Veli Drvenik.

On the island of Brač , the largest nautical center is the deep Milna cove with three marinas: ACI marina Milna (+385 (0) 98 398 851) with 170 berths, Yacht club Milna (+385 (0) 91 400 04 87) with 45 berths and Marina Vlaška (+385 (0) 99 244 7410) with 70 berths. Apart from Milna, the nearby Brač Yachting Anchorage Bobovišća (+385 (0) 91 500 1619) is also becoming increasingly popular, where you can book your place on the buoy in advance.

ACI marina Palmižana

Pakleni islands off the coast of Hvar seem to have been created for anchoring, as was the nearby ACI Marina Palmižana (+385 (0) 21 744 995) with 180 berths. The nearby Vinogradišće cove offers the possibility of buoy berths (concessionaire Đenko Meneghello +385 (0) 91 171 82 42), and in addition to providing protection from almost all winds except the south, is locally famous for a spectacular number of excellent restaurants to visit by boat .

Anchorages on Vis island

If you are aiming towards Vis, make sure to stop at Budikovac, beloved for its turquoise lagoon whose depth rarely exceeds 2 meters. One of everyone’s favorite coves on the island is Stončica, where buoys have been set up to welcome yachts, and the same concessionaire (Gradina Vis +385 (0) 21 711 121) offers buoys in the town of Vis, where boaters have 100 berths at their disposal.

In Komiža , 30 boats can be moored on the waterfront (SDZ Port Authority +385 (0) 21 339 825), and 60 buoys have been set up in Komiža Bay (Komiža Nautical Center +385 (0) 21 713 215). Contact the Komiža Nautical Center if you decide to visit the Mezoporat cove on the island of Biševo, where 20 buoys have also been set up.

Yachting routes that pass through the Split waters are by far the most popular on the Adriatic due to the magnetic attraction of this part of the Croatian Adriatic and the fabulous pearl-like islands that surround this city – Hvar , Pakleni islands, southern coast of Vis, Blue Cave on the island of Biševo. Should you want a stronger ‘connection’ to the land, either due to unfavorable weather conditions or just in case, ACI Marina Palmižana and the northern shores of St. Clement are only a few miles away, and the mesmerizing beauties of Hvar are at your fingertips.

You can stay in this micro area of Hvar for several days, just like many local families have been doing for decades, but it would be a real shame no to go farther and get to know the entire island.

Vis and beautiful beaches

The southeastern side of Vis and a range of incredibly beautiful islands are only a dozen nautical miles away. We suggest that you first drop your anchor in Stončica, a sandy cove with turquoise water, and take a walk to the nearby lighthouse, among the beautiful in the Adriatic. In its immediate vicinity to the east lies Smokova cove, where even in the high season there aren’t too many boats, and which is known as an ideal destination for playing picigin, a highly addictive local ball game.

In case the weather forecast is favorable, spend the night in the turquoise lagoon that mourns the island of Budikovac. This island is a unique microcosm that doesn’t lose its peculiar character even at the peak of the yachting season. A local celebrity Andro Slavić lives in Budikovac all year round, where he has a real small ranch and a uniquely imaginative restaurant.

The next day, as soon as the sun approaches its zenith, let the magical colors of the Green Cave on the neighboring island of Ravnik spill over you. After that, visit another island delight – Srebrna beach, whose name – silver – is a misnomer, as the this cove boasts the most beautiful white pebble beach.

Sailing along the southern shores of Vis in the direction of sunset, you’ll find it hard to choose where to drop your anchor. Ruda cove lures with its almost Caribbean shades of blue, Mala and Vela Travna with imaginative configurations of rocky shores and silky miniature pebble bottoms, and the famous Stiniva is a true masterpiece of Mother Nature. This ‘cove in a cove’ is reminiscent of an exclusive pool, open 24/7 for the lucky ones.

Spend the night in the picturesque fishing village of Komiža if the sky is not frowning from the west, which is usually a sign of bad weather. Drop your anchor at the waterfront or tie your vessel to one of the many buoys, but wherever you stay, make sure you leave Komiža exactly as you found it.

Visit local beaches around Komiža, walk to the most impressive symbol of the town – the church of St. Nicholas, and if you want a unique adventure, rent a bike and conquer the steep, steep road to one of the most spectacular Adriatic lookouts, from where you’ll be able to chose where to turn your bow next. Split shows its panoramic side to the ship's passengers as soon as they enter the harbour: the palm-lined Riva in front of the broad front of the late Roman imperial palace and the bell tower of the cathedral, which towers over the roofs of the old town.

Split is the second largest city in Croatia and is located on a peninsula on the Croatian Adriatic coast. With just under 170,000 inhabitants, it is the economic and cultural centre of the Dalmatian region. Split was founded around the year 305 and is thus one of the oldest Croatian cities. On a cultural discovery tour of the old town, numerous sights and historical treasures can be found. A special visitor magnet is the Diocletian's Palace from the 4th century. Split's city centre with its world-famous palace has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979. Another highlight is Split's picturesque harbour promenade, also known as the Riva. As the heart of the city, it enchants tourists and locals with its unique ambience. The impressive cathedral of St. Dominus and the approximately 8-metre-high statue of Gregory of Nin are further sights that should not be missed on a tour of the city.

Directly in the city there are beautiful beaches that invite you to swim. One of the most beautiful beaches is Kasjuni beach. Located on the southern side of the Marjan Forest Park, it is known for its crystal-clear water in a long-stretched bay.

Worthwhile excursion destinations around Split are the towns of Trogir, Šibenik and Zadar. In the immediate vicinity is the Krka National Park with its famous waterfalls. The second closest island, Brač, can be reached ideally by catamaran or sailing boat from Split. Hvar is also a popular destination for a yacht charter from Split .

ACI Marina Split - yacht and sailboat charter

The ACI Marina Split is located in the most beautiful part of the city harbour, north of the island of Sustipan. It is the starting point for the longest and most beautiful promenade on the Adriatic. In 2017, the marina was awarded second place in the category "Best Marina in the Middle Adriatic". Likewise, the marina owner was awarded the "Blue Flag" distinction.

As Split's city harbour is a large ferry port, entering it requires extra attention. It should be noted that departing ships have the right of way when carrying out their manoeuvres and anchoring is not permitted in the entire harbour area.

ACI Marina Split has 318 moorings and 30 dry moorings for sailing yachts, motor boats or catamarans, all equipped with water and electricity connections. With a maximum depth of 9m and spacious docking areas, yachts up to approximately 80m in length can also dock at the marina.

Split first came to prominence in around AD 295 when the Roman Emperor Diocletian ordered a palace built there. Diocletian's Palace remains an important part of the city to this day even after a number of other empires have ruled over the city over the last two Millennia.

The Venetians owned Split over the city for more than 350 years, then the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the French and then of course Tito’s Yugoslavia until the late 1980’s. Diocletian’s Palace remains an important part of the city, untouched in the civil war and the destruction of Yugoslavia in the early 1990’s. As such this historic port is an almost unspoiled Mediterranean port that is worthy of a stay for a day or two, even before heading off on a luxury yacht charter.

Explore Split By Renting A Boat or Yacht

You can sail to Brac Island and Solta Island that lie an easy few hours sailing away from the ACI Marina Split, and can give you a taste of the best the Adriatic has on offer shortly after leaving port and an easy shakedown cruise on the sailing yacht. Another historic port on the Dalmatian Coast is Trogir, again a short day sail from the city along the bay.

On a typical sailing holiday you can mix and match between cities and towns, laid back anchorages and busy marinas as you go, taking in everything from barbecues on deserted beaches to full blast nightlife the feeling takes you.

Thanks to its position in the middle of the Adriatic Coast, Split is a great place to start a yacht charter heading south through the islands and along the Croatian coast towards Dubrovnik. Many a yacht charter up the Adriatic Sea is a one way trip, taking in the islands to the west as you hop from port to anchorage on your journey.

Skippered and fully crewed yacht charters also follow this route, with you just a passenger while taken by sea to some of the best spots known to those running the boat.

The holiday hotspot of Hvar is just a couple of days’ sailing from Split too. You will encounter the best nightlife in the region as well as some fantastic beaches. On an itinerary such as this you would loop back to Split at the end of your trip.

Heading north, Kornati Island is a national park with unique geology and wildlife, and are worth a visit for a day or more.

Around 50% of the marinas in Croatia are run by the state-owned ACI Marina company. These are of a good standard, though you should be aware that on some of the remoter islands shore power and water might be limited. ACI Split is where most sailboat charters leave from, though Trogir Marina is not far from Split Airport – you can include Split as part of your planned itinerary from there.

Where you can sail to or hire a boat to travel in the nearby area

If you have an eight day yacht charter (Saturday to Saturday) then you can head south to Dubrovnik and loop back or north to the Pula peninsula and return.

On a bigger, faster vessel like a motor boat or superyacht you could visit much of the coast of Croatia from north to south – it isn’t a very big country, though there are 2,000 islands to visit!

How To Get To Split

There are regular flights from several British airports to Split.

Travel routes to get there.

From the UK you can fly direct from Bristol, Belfast, Glasgow, London (Gatwick, Heathrow and Luton), Newcastle, and Manchester. It is also possible to fly to Venice and then on to Split from there.

The airport is 23km from the main city and a taxi costs around £30 for the trip. There are shuttle buses into the city centre from the airport too – these can save you money but you will still have to get from the bus station to the ACI Marina Split for the sailboat charter.

Suggested Sailing Routes From Split

Broadly there are two ways you can take a charter out of Split. The first is a one-way trip south to Dubrovnik, taking in the islands and coastline as you go.

The second is a loop route. Heading south over 6-8 days it is possible to head down to Dubrovnik and then island hop north via Vis island, Hvar Town and Stari Grad, either staying on a mooring buoy or going alongside at a town quay as you head back to Split.

Heading north you can take in the Kornati Island national park and head as far north as the original Dalmatian capital of Zadar before looping back south.

Trogir Marina is a little closer to Split Airport than ACI Split so you could include the city as a stop on similar routes north or south.

A typical day’s sail could be up to 35 miles though can be as few as 15. On a sailing monohull this would amount to 3-7 hours sailing daily though on a quick motor yacht you can cover a greater distance and spend more time exploring ashore.

Types Of Boats and Yachts To Hire In Split

Broadly there are four types of boat you can hire in Split – the motor cruiser, monohull sailboat , catamaran and speedboat.

Ranging from a 50 metre-plus fully crewed superyacht to a 15 metre bareboat, motor cruisers are a comfortable and fast way of getting around the coast and islands of Croatia. The larger ones will have all manner of toys from jet skis to racing yachts aboard, and plenty of entertainment space to enjoy sunsets (and sunrises!) in good company.

Monohull sailing boat

The workhorse of the sailboat charter fleet, monohull sailboats do the job in comfort – though not at a ripping pace. Better at getting to windward than a sailing catamaran, you’ll likely find yourself under sail more often on a loop route than on a cat. Don’t expect to get anywhere in a hurry, but that’s part of the fun of sailing! Available for as little as €120 a day at the basic end you can have a great sailing holiday for a group of six adults at a good price – though you can pay a lot more for extra comfort and space.

Sailing catamaran

Much quicker downwind than a monohull, sailing catamarans can be fun and fast – but extremely comfortable and spacious at the same time. Expect en suite heads in every cabin and plenty of entertainment space below. The twin engines will more than make up for the leeway that makes these less handy to windward.

Since 1995 we have been working in yacht charter business and offer sailing boat rental in Croatia . We mostly work with high-quality sailing boats provided by our sister company Beneteau Croatia . In addition to yacht charter in Croatia , we also operate one of the oldest and best sailing school in Croatia where we provide sailing courses to “new” as well as to experienced sailors.

Our company philosophy is to provide our clients with the best possible service  when they charter a yacht for a sailing holiday in Croatia . Our team consists mainly of very experienced sailors, securing the highest possible standard in the whole process with arranging/planning, booking, arrival at one of our charter bases in Croatia and final departure from the Marina for an unforgettable sailing adventure in Croatia.

As already mentioned, our yacht charter fleet consists mainly of sailing boats from Beneteau. In our fleet we have boats from 30 feet to about   64 feet and in terms of berths our boats offer space for 6-12 persons. All boats are carefully maintained by our technical team and the colleagues from Beneteau Croatia . As a charter client you can expect to board a charter boat in super condition.

Well, what is the wording – no rule without an exception ! Actually, we at Ultra Sailing also have Catamarans for charter ; the catamarans are of the brand Fountaine Pajot . If you rather want to rent a motorboat , mega yacht or other types of vessel our experienced booking team can of course assist you in finding vessels of those types.

From which charter bases in Croatia can the Ultra Sailing boats be rented?  Ultra has branch offices and staff in ACI Marina Split , ACI Marina Dubrovnik , Marina Baotic (Trogir) ,    ACI Marina Pomer in Pula and Marina Kastela . Charter boats have to be returned in the same Marina they were rented in. Upon request and payment of additional fee it is possible to arrange one way charter from Trogir/Split to Dubrovnik or vice versa . 

Charter price  depends on a number of factors, size and type of charter boat, duration of rental and date of the charter . At Ultra we offer various discount programs like early booking Yachtcharter   or last minute sailing if you are flexible it is possible to enjoy a week sailing holiday in Croatia at a bargain price.

If you are looking to charter a sailing boat in Croatia for the first time, you of course need to be aware of the formal requirements for chartering a yacht in Croatia , no need to say that a license for operating the vessel is required. Additionally, sailing and navigation skills should be on an adequate level. Once your embarkation date is 7 days away, the remainder of the amount due is processed.
• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is made 7 days or less in advance, the total price of your reservation is processed immediately.
• If you are booking for a multi-day charter and your reservation is confirmed more than 30 days in advance, a deposit of 50% of the cost of the yacht is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 30 days away, the other 50% is collected for the price of the yacht, plus the APA, plus the taxes due.

Terms of refunds are dictated by the Charter Agreement. Generally, once a payment is collected, it is non-refundable. In certain circumstances, as dictated by the Charter Agreement, credits can be provided so you will be able to enjoy your yacht charter at a future date that is convenient for you.

Explore historical Split

Everyone needs a break from sailing around the stunning coast and sunbathing all day. Why not head into the historical centre of Split to discover some of the most incredible historical sites you can spot. Visit the Cathedral of Saint Domnius to discover more of Croatia’s Catholic history and Roman past. It is said to be the oldest cathedral in the world that is still in use today for services etc. Climb up the dome for a panoramic view of the city. Diocletian's Palace is worth a visit if you want to experience Roman history outside of Italy. Built at the turn of the fourth century, its structure and magnificence can still be seen today.

Discover mystical Split

Split may not be known for its mythological history, but you can find a Sphinx, a classical symbol of Egyptian mythology, in front of the Cathedral of Saint Domnius . Dating back as far as Pharaoh Thutmose III, it is considered one of the oldest objects to be found in Split. There is an urban legend about Cornelius Vanderbilt of the famous American Vanderbilt family going around in regards to the Sphinx. Apparently he tried to purchase it, but was declined.
