Blitzen’s Baddies aim for strong finish to 2024 Newport Yacht Club’s racing season

Challenges confronted the crew of the Blitzen from day one in their inaugural year competing in the Newport Harbor Yacht Club’s racing season. Their halyard broke during the opening day race in May, sending the wind-catching kite propelling their boat from Long Beach Harbor to Newport Pier tumbling into the ocean.

“There was no hesitation between this team,” Blitzen’s owner Brett Scott said. “Everyone grabbed the kite and in 20 seconds it was up and flying again.”

She has been sailing since she was 5. But her first year at the head of a team has taught her a lot about managing schedules, the personalities aboard the boat and finances, she said.

“Whenever something breaks it adds up, so I’m definitely not doing this for the money,” Scott said with a laugh. “Don’t take investment advice from me. But we’ve really bonded as a team, and I think that’s our greatest achievement.”

There were plenty of smirks, side-eye and playful jabs as she and the crew rigged the Blitzen Friday in preparation of Long Point Race week. The three-day race is the last competitive event of the yacht club’s season.

The first leg starts in Newport Harbor and ends at Catalina Island. Boats then sail to the opposite end of the island and back on day two before returning to Newport Harbor on day three.

The crew of the Blitzen prepares the boat Friday ahead of the Long Point Yacht Race.

Blitzen’s Baddies, as the crew refers to themselves on Instagram, are all experienced sailors and were optimistic about finishing strong in their first season as a team. They’ve had some success this summer, including third-, second- and first-place finishes in their class during the three days of Long Beach Racing Week in June.

“We keep getting better,” Scott said.

Crew member Tyler Macdonald said the hardest part about the season has been “dealing with Adam and Spencer,” drawing laughs from Adam Bradley, Spencer Buchanan and the rest of the team aboard the Blitzen on Friday. Teammate Matt Whitfield said the real challenge of each race lies in “the hangover afterwards.” Coincidentally, he said his favorite activity while sailing is when they crack open some beer mid-journey.

There’s no shortage of banter aboard the Blitzen. And the irreverent sense of humor of her crew is half the reason Scoot chose to have them aboard.

She grew up in Reno and traveled to Newport Beach every summer as a child to sail with her family. She fell in love with both the ocean and the tavern-style warmth of the community that welcomed her into the sport.

Boat owner Brett Scott, left, and crew member Scott Buchanan.

Her father, Bart Scott, said he wasn’t surprised to see her move to Newport Beach. He’s proud to see her fulfill her lifelong dream of owning a boat and fielding a racing team. And although she has a sense of humor, she runs a tight ship and commands the respect of her crew.

“Once we all come together on what a problem is there’s not a lot of back and forth or arguing,” Scott said. “They all just recognize what we each need to do and get it done.”

After Long Point, Blitzen’s Baddies plan on participating in small casual races while preparing for next season. They hope to compete in the Transpacific Yacht Race from San Pedro to Honolulu next July.

Corinthian Yacht Club Gears Up for a Title Defense at the 2024 Resolute Cup

' src=

The Corinthian Yacht Club (Marblehead, Mass.) is set to defend its title at the upcoming Resolute Cup on Narragansett Bay, and they are returning with the same team that clinched the championship in 2022. With the experience of winning under their belts, skipper Wade Waddell and his crew are prepared for another strong showing at this prestigious event.

“The competition is intense, the racing is tight, and winning is hard, which is what keeps us coming back,” says Waddell. “After taking the title in 2022 and finishing as the runner-up at the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, we knew we had to return. Our team—Doug Sabin, Duncan Swain, and Miranda Bakos—has developed a strong bond and a high level of trust, which is crucial when the stakes are high.”

Waddell is no stranger to the fierce rivalry with the San Diego Yacht Club (SDYC), having finished ahead of them in the 2022 Resolute Cup before placing second to SDYC at the 2023 Rolex NYYC Invitational Cup.

“SDYC has put together a younger team this year, but I’m sure they will still be a formidable opponent,” Waddell remarks. “A lot of the sailors from SDYC are either friends or former college teammates, which adds a fun dynamic to the competition. It was thrilling to go 1-2 with them in both the Resolute Cup and the Invitational Cup, albeit in different orders.”

Since its inception in 2010, the Resolute Cup has served as the Corinthian Championship for U.S. yacht clubs and remains the sole guaranteed pathway for an American club to earn a spot in the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, considered the most prestigious international competition in Corinthian sailing. The seventh edition of the biennial event, which was not held in 2020, is scheduled for September 9 to 14 at the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court in Newport, R.I. This year, the event will feature the Club’s fleet of Sonars, with standardized equipment and on-the-water umpiring to ensure a fair competition.

Despite having already secured a berth in the 2025 Invitational Cup, San Diego Yacht Club isn’t resting on its laurels. Jack Egan, stepping in as the club’s Resolute Cup skipper, is determined to push his team to their limits.

“In some ways, the pressure is off, but none of us has a competitive ‘off’ switch,” says Egan. “Tyler Sinks, the previous skipper, has shared his insights, and we’re ready to lean on SDYC’s experience and the diverse skills each of us brings.”

Adam Roberts, who serves as the tactician for SDYC, echoes Egan’s sentiments about the team’s depth and potential.

“We have a boat stacked with talent, each sailor bringing something unique to the table,” Roberts explains. “Winning the Resolute Cup demands the same meticulous attention to detail as the Invitational Cup. It’s my job to harness our strengths and ensure we perform at our best in every aspect of this event.”

Meanwhile, Eastern Yacht Club, led by Clinton Hayes, is also eyeing a spot on the podium. After finishing fourth in 2022, Hayes believes their experience with the Sonar will be a key advantage.

“High-level racing in evenly matched boats is the most fun you can have on the water,” Hayes notes. “Eastern has always excelled in the Sonar, and we believe we can compete with the best.”

Hannah Lynn, also part of the Eastern team, highlights the importance of familiarity and consistency.

“We’ve been racing together for a decade, mostly in Sonars,” Lynn says. “Returning with the same crew gives us a strong foundation to build on, especially now that we’re more comfortable with the boat.”

Southern Yacht Club, a past champion of both the Resolute Cup and Invitational Cup, is also in the mix. With Andy Lovell, a seasoned sailor with Olympic trials experience, at the helm, they are eager to reclaim their former glory.

“We need to qualify for the Invitational Cup, and this is a big deal for us,” says Lovell. “We’re focused on doing well in every race and not letting frustration get the better of us.”

Racing for the Resolute Cup kicks off on September 11, with the fleet being halved for three final double-point races on September 14. The action unfolds on Narragansett Bay, with races starting each day at 10:30 a.m. and continuing through the afternoon, weather permitting.

Consistency Lifts Newport Harbor Yacht Club to 2024 Morgan Cup

Newport Harbor Yacht Club

August 27, 2024

yacht club new port

There’s no official AP ranking for keelboat team racing, but if there were, it would be hard to argue against Newport Harbor Yacht Club , from Newport Beach, California, currently occupying the top spot. With a win at its Baldwin Cup in April and now a win in the Morgan Cup held at the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court, the NHYC team-racing squad can claim simultaneous ownership of two of the most prestigious team-racing trophies in the world.

“This is super exciting,” said Jake La Dow, team captain for NHYC. “This is an event that we’ve targeted for a long time. We got second last year with the same core group. Our goal this year was to come back and win. We were just thrilled to cross that last race in a 1-2-3 [winning combination]. We knew that if we won that final race, we would win the event, and so as soon as we crossed the line we started cheering.”

Second place was decided via a tiebreaker with New York Yacht Club, Levesque edging out Corinthian Yacht Club of Marblehead, Massachusetts, on the basis of a better head-to-head record. Royal Thames Yacht Club finished fourth with Larchmont Yacht Club rounding out the top five.

While the conditions covered a broad range over the three-day event—with gusts into the mid 20s on Friday and then a morning delay today while the teams waited for the breeze to fill in—consistency on the racecourse regardless of the wind strength was crucial to the overall win.

“As a team, we started very consistently all event,” said La Dow. “I think we only had maybe one or two races where we were really disadvantaged off the starting line. So [our keys to victory were] being very consistent on the starts, being disciplined in our team racing, really focusing on sailing the boats well first and just keeping it simple.”

La Dow was quick to credit the entire 12-person squad, especially when it came to having success in the breezier conditions that kicked the regatta off with a bang on Friday.

“The skippers get a lot of the credit,” said La Dow. “I’m doing this interview, but any of our team could be doing this right now. It really is a huge effort for the crew. Just sailing the boats is hard, and it takes all four people in the boat to do that well, nailing the pole on the jibe, flying the spinnaker correctly. If any one piece is out of place or not working at a high level, the whole mission fails. For those ranges and conditions, especially, it’s all down to the crew.”

And when it comes to getting the crew trained for these events, there’s no substitute for an engaged yacht club.

“It starts with our club, Newport Harbor Yacht Club ,” said La Dow. “We have a ton of support to go out and do these types of events. We get out for weekly practices and weekend regattas quite a lot throughout the year. It’s a big club effort.”

ORC Finds Strength in Numbers for New York Yacht Club's 169th Annual Regatta

ORC Finds Strength in Numbers for New York Yacht Club's 169th Annual Regatta

Newport, R.I., USA -  Rating rules may make noise with the large custom raceboats, but it’s the rank and file that drive sustained success. The 74-foot Bella Mente will likely be the most eye-catching boat competing under the ORC rating rule at the 2023 edition of the New York Yacht Club’s Annual Regatta, June 9 to 11 . But it’s the plethora of racer-cruisers from 30 to 45 feet in length that are the real proof that ORC has established itself in the United States.

With just under a month to go until the first gun, the ORC fleet for the 169th running of North America’s oldest recurring regatta stands at 33 boats and is well positioned to best last year’s fleet of 39 boats. The record of 49 boats, set in 2021, isn’t out of reach. A total of 88 boats are currently registered for the Annual Regatta.

“Switching rating rules, as the Club did in 2020, going to ORC from IRC, always comes with a few challenges,” says Peter Cummiskey , the event chair for the Annual Regatta. “But our sailors were demanding a rating formula that better handles how different boats perform in varying wind strengths. ORC has delivered tremendous racing, especially at the smaller end of the size range.”

The New York Yacht Club’s Annual Regatta was first sailed on the Hudson River on July 16 and 18, 1846. A similar competition the previous year was called a Trial of Speed. With a few exceptions for world wars and other global crises, the event has been held every year since. For the majority of its existence, the Annual Regatta was raced on waters close to New York City. Since 1988, however, the event has been sailed out of the Harbour Court clubhouse in Newport, R.I., and has settled into the current three-day format, which includes a race around Conanicut Island on Friday, two days of buoy or navigator-course racing on Saturday and Sunday and nightly social activities on the grounds of the historic Harbour Court mansion. The 169th Annual Regatta is sponsored by Hammetts Hotel and Helly Hansen . Preliminary Scratch Sheet for 169th Annual Regatta

Vince and Kristina McAteer’s Summit 35 Divided Sky - NYYC Annual Regatta 2022 © Daniel Forster

Vince and Kristina McAteer’s Summit 35 Divided Sky  has been one of the most active PHRF programs on Narragansett Bay for the past decade and is no stranger to the podium at the Annual Regatta. “My wife and I have always referred to PHRF as ‘perfectly happy racing family,’” says Vince McAteer (East Greenwich, R.I.). “As our kids have gotten older, and more mature, so has their appetite for steeper competition, hence the shift to ORC. Last year was a fun turning point for the program as we had many junior sailors in key positions on the boat. My then 13-year-old, Vincent, was our primary helm for half the season; and when he was off the helm, he was on the bow with other junior sailors from our yacht club. The excitement from the middle schoolers and high schoolers on the team was infectious. It certainly made the rest of us raise our game.” The Club’s selection as the host for the 2024 ORC World Championship has created a spark of enthusiasm in the Northeast. The last time a rating-rule world championship was held in the United States was 23 years ago when the New York Yacht Club hosted the 2000 IMS World Championship. The New York Yacht Club was scheduled to host a combined IRC/ORC World Championship in 2020, but the COVID pandemic forced the cancellation of that event.

For the Divided Sky program, and many others, the Annual Regatta in 2023 is a key steppingstone in the preparation for the Worlds in 2024. “We are targeting the 2024 Worlds, so racing ORC at the Annual Regatta seems like the right thing to do to be ready,” says Vince McAteer. “We will try and race with the rule whenever possible leading up to next year‘s event. We don’t know too much about how the boat performs in ORC, but we are well aware of [Summit 35 designer] Mark Mills’ success in penning boats that perform well across all rating formulas.”

To find proof of the Mills pedigree under ORC, McAteer need not look far. Winning the ORC 4 division in last year’s Annual Regatta was Ben Chigier’s Summit 40 Escape Velocity 2 , also designed by Mills.

Ben Chigier’s Summit 40 Escape Velocity 2 - NYYC Annual Regatta © Paul Todd / Outside Images

"We had a great crew and, of course, Stan Schreyer is a really great captain,” says Chigier , of Manchester, Mass. “We foster good communication and work hard to enable everybody to work well together, and we got lucky. Lots of things went our way, but mostly it’s the crew.”

Chigier won three straight races to start last year’s weekend series and hung on for a win over a trio of J/122s. Repeating the feat will only be more difficult this year as five J/122s are currently registered under ORC, in addition to a number of other competitive teams in that size range. “We’re fortunate to have many of the same crew planning to be back with us this year and hope we can do well again,” says Chigier. “We are a great team, and we always have fun racing in Newport.” At this stage, Chigier says he is undecided on the 2024 ORC World Championship. He plans to race under ORC in the Annual Regatta and the ORC East Coast Championships, hosted by the New York Yacht Club in July, and reevaluate after that.

The star of the show in sailing yachts since the mid 1960s, Nautor Swan is set to debut their newest power yacht, Arrow, at the Cannes Yachting Festival , September 10-15, 2024. Launched August 28, 2024 at the Sanlorenzo La Spezia shipyard, this elegant, sporty, functional sister cygnet is destined to mature at light speed after her global reveal.

Designed by Nautor Swan power division designer Jarkko Jamsén, with interiors by Ioanna Marinopoulou and Axel de Beaufort, Arrow features a contemporary design with wide open spaces that invite longer, more leisurely cruise experiences. Initially intended to be categorized as a chase boat, Arrow proved her prowess as a stand alone day boat in part due to a rapidly increasing fan base.

The first ever Nautor Swan powerboat launched was the Swan Shadow, followed by an inboard version, the Swan OverShadow, which debuted at Cannes in 2023. As Nautor Group President Leonardo Ferragamo noted, "When it was launched the result was overwhelming as it became a boat of its own, creating its specific niche in our waters and becoming a great day boat." That passion exhibited by the team and shared by the market led to the Swan Arrow, a 75-foot motor yacht displaying the totemic Swan DNA.

Arrow By The Numbers

The Nautor Swan Arrow is built in advanced composites using a mix infused with GRP and carbon. The walkaround design emulates that of a superyacht, but in a more nimble, highly usable format, using less fuel in a more intimate atmosphere. Focused on interaction with the sea, side opening platforms creates a 548 square foot (50 square meter) beach area that floats just above sea level. Convenient fold-down steps take guests right down to the water.

Her displacement hull measures 76 feet (23.20 meters) with a 22 foot (6.90 meter) beam and a 6 foot 3 inch (1.90 meter) draft. Her maximum speed is 30 knots in the standard arrangement using two Volvo 1350 D13 Penta IPS engines, or 40 knots with the optional arrangement employing three of the same.

Arrow accommodates six to eight guests and two crew. Descending the stairs, guests looking to port find a dedicated galley that serves the aft master cabin. Reaching across the full beam, the master cabin space boasts a walk-in closet, ensuite bath, and stylish materials typical of Nautor Swan heritage.

Amidships, a VIP cabin and twin cabin, both en suite, deliver private guest spaces. An alternative layout offers two large double cabins with a lounge embracing a starboard salon, L-shaped sofa, and dining area. Away from guest areas, crew space for two is located further forward.

Roy Capasso, Motoryacht Commercial Director and Regional Director SEMEA and Americas, summarized, "When starting the Swan Arrow project we began with attentively listening to our clients and a detailed analysis of the market. The results, together with the creativity of our designer and the expertise of a qualified team have allowed us to introduce a new concept with some features missing in motoryachts of this size, answering the needs of their owners."

On The Horizon

Founded in 1966, Nautor Swan is universally recognized for its performance Maxi yachts and Club Swan Racing yachts, as well as leisure sailing yachts, all built with an elegant, high quality style emphasizing innovation, reliability, and performance. The addition of a power division at Nautor Swan embellishes the brand with a broad appeal, bridging the gap that once separated power versus sail preferences with one brand.

An agreement between Sanlorenzo and Swan for the acquisition of Nautor Swan Group was announced August 1, 2024, but the continuity of the brand is assured through the leadership of Nautor Swan, helmed by Leonardo Ferragamo, retaining the office of President, Massimo Perotti as CEO, and Giovanni Pomati as co-CEO.

The Arrow is not the only Swan with a scheduled debut at the Cannes Show. The Swan Maxi 88 sailing yacht will make her debut, along with the Club Swan 43 . The Swan 88, designed by Germàn Frers with interiors by Misa Poggi, is expected to earn as many admiring looks as the Arrow. The Club Swan 43, designed by Juan Kouyoumdjian, is intended to serve as a racing and cruising crossover enhanced by top of industry technology for competitive one-design sailing and a comfortable cruising environment.

Two Southern California yacht clubs recognized on Top 50 list

yacht club new port

Platinum Clubs organization names Newport Harbor YC and San Diego YC to worldwide compilation.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA—Newport Harbor and San Diego yacht clubs both earned a spot on the Top 50 Platinum Yacht Clubs for 2020-2021, it was recently announced. The worldwide list is compiled by Platinum Clubs of the World.

Placing on the list means a yacht club is presented with the title of “Five Star Clubs of Excellence.”

San Diego YC was founded in 1886 and has recently hosted sailing events such as Women’s Winter Invitational, Yachting Cup, the CA500, the SoCal 300, Dutch Shoe Marathon, International Masters Regatta and Lipton Cup.

Newport Harbor YC first opened its doors in 1916 and hosts the Newport to Cabo Race every two years, among other regattas.

Other yacht clubs making the Top 50 list included: Annapolis Yacht Club, Beach Point Club, Chicago Yacht Club, Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, Nassau Yacht Club (Bahamas), Raffles Marina (Singapore), Real Club Nautico de Vigo (Spain), Royal Bombay Yacht Club (India), Royal Cork Yacht Club (Ireland), The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club (Australia), Société des Régates du Havre (France), Yacht Club de Monaco and Yacht Club Santo Amaro (Brazil).

Two Southern California yacht clubs earned an Honorable Mention, scoring within three points of the Top 50 list: Balboa Yacht Club (Newport Beach) and California Yacht Club (Marina del Rey).

Fifty yacht clubs are selected based upon points awarded by a selected panel. A yacht club must score at least 8 points to qualify for the Top 50 list. Scoring is awarded as follows: 100 points for a top three club, 80 points for a ranking between four and 10, 60 points for 11 to 25 ranking, 40 points for 26-60 ranking, 20 points for 51-75 ranking and 10 points for 76-100 ranking.

Voting was conducted by 116 panelists from all around the world; panelists hailed from the United States, Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Japan, The Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Arab Emirates. Panelists vote every two years (odd years). Finalists are selected based upon submitted recommendations from panelists and applications from yacht clubs from around the world. A final ballot is eventually created and sent out to panelists. There is a 30-day voting period, with the election conducted electronically (via a third party).

“Points are awarded by the position and ranking that the panelist assigns to each club. The total number of points is calculated and divided by the total number of panelists who have visited a club to determine the final points score,” a Platinum Clubs of the World statement about the voting process said.

The Club Leaders Forum Advisory Board of the Platinum Clubs of the World compiled the Top 50 list. Platinum Clubs of America have been recognizing top yacht clubs for more than 20 years.

Environment | contaminated sediment proposed for burial in newport harbor could go to port of long beach instead.

yacht club new port

The Army Corps of Engineers is set to clear an estimated 1.2 million cubic yards from the harbor’s central channel and channels near its entry. Of that, about 10% of the material removed can’t be dumped into the open ocean under federal law because it contains elevated levels of mercury and industrial chemicals such as DDT.

A confined aquatic disposal facility dug into the harbor’s floor was proposed for the dredge material that needed a place to go, with blessings from the California Coastal Commission to bury the sediment in the pit with a clean layer of sand over top.

Progress on that plan stalled last year when the Army Corps of Engineers suspended permits for the burial site following legal challenges by Orange County Coastkeeper questioning the study of the plan and if the covering layer would be thick enough to protect the water and surrounding wildlife from the potential escape of toxins if the sand were knocked loose by boat anchors.

A proposed agreement between the Army Corps of Engineers and the Port of Long Beach revealed in a new planning document indicates the contaminated sediment can be repurposed at a port pier project.

Last year, Coastkeeper and another group, the Friends of Newport Harbor, agreed to put their legal action on hold after the federal agency committed to doing more studies. In April, Coastkeeper came to a settlement agreement with the federal agency. The litigation by the Friends of Newport Harbor is still pending.

Coastkeeper officials, this week, announced success in fending off the burial plan after receiving a 153-page modified biological evaluation from the Army Corps of Engineers and an accompanying Fish and Wildlife Service letter. The agencies must share updates with them as part of their settlement agreement.

In the biological update, the Army Corps of Engineers said the dredged debris would be used at the Port of Long Beach at the Pier G Slip Fill Site.

Port of Long Beach officials have proposed the pier project to “create fast land in the middle of the port complex.” The area is currently a commercial facility for the berthing and unloading of container ships within the port, according to the report from the Army Corps of Engineers.

“It’s a better project that they repurposed this,” said Matt Sylvester, spokesperson for Coastkeeper. “Ultimately, our goal was to be more environmentally sound. This is a great outcome. We’re seeing an even better idea than what we could have thought of.”

Newport Beach city officials said Wednesday that the new plan “presents a promising opportunity,” but their idea for the storage facility under the harbor will not be dropped until the Army Corps signs its agreement with the port. Planning for the confined aquatic disposal facility has been in the works for five years and cost the city more than $2 million.

“The port recently agreed to consider accepting the sediment within a confined disposal facility at Pier G – an option that was not available as the city and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers were developing the harbor dredging project,” said John Pope, the city’s spokesperson, adding that dredging, per the new plan, would be handled by the Army Corps of Engineers and done between March and September 2025.

If the city went through with the underwater storage site, which Pope said is approved by the Environmental Protection Agency and was praised by the Coastal Commission, it could also have accommodated dredged material pulled from some of the harbor channels maintained by the city and from some that are private.

Army Corps of Engineer officials said Thursday they could not discuss any specifics or a timeline because of pending litigation with Friends of Newport Harbor, but spokesperson Stephen Baack said, “The Corps is continuing to work diligently to complete its environmental review under the National Environmental Policy Act and other applicable environmental laws.”

According to the plans in the Army Corps of Engineers document completed this month, including input from National Marine Fisheries and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the dredging project would take about 100 weeks. Work would be done with a clamshell dredge six days a week, from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on weekdays and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays.

A biologist would also monitor the area for impacts on marine mammals, sea turtles and shorebirds, according to the latest plan document. Visual monitoring would start 15 minutes before any on-water work and anytime after a break of more than 30 minutes.

All in-water project activities would be stopped if a sea turtle was observed within the monitoring zone.  Work would not continue until the turtle was either observed leaving the area or at least 15 minutes had passed since it was sighted.

The federal government manages the Newport Harbor and occasionally scours the basin of excess sand and debris from navigational channels where about 9,000 vessels transit and could run aground if the channel is not deep enough.

The harbor was last dredged in 2011. At that time, efforts were focused on the Rhine Channel and also in front of what is now Marina Park and the American Legion Yacht Club.

In an agreement then, the city also sent contaminated sediment to the Port of Long Beach.

Inside the Kennedy Family’s Historic Camelot Estate: How Stunning Hyannis Port Compound Became Their Ultimate Escape

The Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port, MA , holds almost as much lore as infamous political dynasty itself.

This home was purchased in 1928 by family patriarch, diplomat, and businessman Joseph P. Kennedy for his wife, Rose, and their nine children, including President John F. Kennedy and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy . Over the years, the residence has become closely intertwined with the family’s storied history.

It was at the Cape Cod retreat that JFK planned his presidential campaign in the summer of 1960, and it was there that his wife, Jackie Kennedy Onassis , fled after he was assassinated in 1963 at the age of 46.

Hyannis Port would be where Jackie crafted the image of Kennedy’s presidency as “Camelot” in the wake of his death, taking inspiration from the late politician’s favorite Broadway musical and telling the media in her first official interview after his passing: “Don’t let it be forgot, that for one brief, shining moment there was Camelot.”

The home had been the site of many happy vacations for JFK and Jackie—and it went on to serve as a much-needed retreat for other family members over the years, becoming the site of an annual Fourth of July reunion for many of their descendants.

Each year, dozens of extended Kennedy family members—from RFK’s daughter Kerry and her children with ex-husband  Andrew Cuomo  to  Maria Shriver ‘s daughter  Katherine Schwarzenegger  and her actor husband, Chris Pratt — gather at the property to celebrate the holiday.

Traditionally, images from Kennedy family gatherings were shared with the media, offering a glimpse inside the dynasty’s lavish lifestyle. Today, those same glimpses are posted on social media—particularly, images from those famed July Fourth celebrations.

As Labor Day approaches and the end of summer nears, take a look inside the fascinating history of this historic, picture-perfect home.

A storied American home

The Kennedys might never have come to Hyannis Port if it hadn’t been for one pastime Joseph and Rose loved: golf. In 1926, and already a millionaire, Joseph went in search of a home near a golf club.

He explored a membership at the Cohasset Country Club, on the South Shore and close to Boston. However, he was iced out, reportedly as a result of his Irish Catholic faith.

Instead, the couple found Hyannisport Club on Cape Cod—then run by an Irish Catholic—and the Kennedys were welcomed. They proceeded to rent Malcolm Cottage, as it was then known and, in 1928, purchased the property for $25,000, according to the website for the JFK Museum in Hyannis.

The 3-acre property on a dead-end street directly faces Nantucket Sound.

Kennedy family at Hyannis Port compound

While the Kennedy family spent time at other homes in New York, Maryland, and Florida, Hyannis Port is where they would create a multigenerational compound. Joe Kennedy expanded the main house, dubbed the Big House, to reportedly include 21 rooms, 12 bedrooms, a steam room, and a 50-person theater in the basement.

The grounds offer a tennis court and pool, and other recreation options including golfing at the local club and sailing on the sound. Touch football, played on the grassy lawn, was also a favorite.

JFK bought a home behind his father’s Big House in 1956. It became known as the President’s House. Robert F. Kennedy and his wife, Ethel, bought another adjacent home; and those three properties made up the compound, which now spans 6 acres of waterfront property.

Fourth of July gatherings

In growing numbers, the Kennedy clan still gathers at the family compound for its traditional Fourth of July celebration.

This year was no exception. Kerry Kennedy shared on Instagram a video of dozens and dozens of family members assembled for their annual portrait, including some very familiar faces, such as Shriver, Pratt, and  Robert F. Kennedy Jr. —the son of Robert Kennedy, who served as the Attorney General under President Kennedy.

RFK Jr., who recently suspended his long-shot campaign for president as an independent, caused rifts among family members who didn’t support his run. He has gone viral for odd stories involving dead animals, including a baby bear in Central Park  and another wild tale dredged up from 2012 about beheading a whale and attaching it to the roof of the family car, as told by his daughter, Kick Kennedy . (She has been rumored to be dating Ben Affleck , but his rep denies this.)

It was in the main house that JFK apparently decided to run for president, and the home subsequently served as his campaign headquarters.

The morning after the election, it was his young daughter, Caroline, who woke him up in their Hyannis Port home to announce, “Good morning, Mr. President.”

During JFK’s presidency, the compound became the “seaside White House.” He once said of his Cape Cod home, “I always come back to the Cape and walk on the beach when I have a tough decision to make.”

The place became iconic when images emerged of Jack and Jackie spending time there with their children during the White House years.

A place for comfort after traumatic loss

It’s also a place where family members have retreated to grieve tremendous loss over the years, from the deaths of Joe Kennedy Jr., the eldest son, in World War II, to JFK’s assassination in 1963 to RFK’s assassination in 1968, after he won the California presidential primary.

Another tragedy, decades later, took JFK’s son, JFK Jr. , who died in a plane crash with wife Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy  in 1999.

In 2019, another tragedy struck: a granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy , Saoirse Kennedy Hill , died of a suspected overdose at the Kennedy family compound. Her death occurred in the home of her grandmother, Ethel Kennedy , who was 91 at the time.

The compound was designated a U.S. National Landmark in 1972—not surprising for a property that embodies so much American history.

Snag your own compound

While the Kennedy compound isn’t likely to hit the market any time soon, there are some nearby gems available, and hey, some of your neighbors might even be Kennedys. Take a look.

This glorious seaside estate is available as is for $7,999,999. The landmark property from 1920 features 10 bedrooms, 6.5 baths, and 5,500 square feet across a main house and guesthouse. Located on the Hyannis Port Harbor with water views, the estate features a built-in bar, dining room, breakfast room, covered front porch, and three fireplaces. The property includes a basement for storage, three garage bays, and lots of guest parking in the circular driveway.

Here’s one for about half the price in Barnstable, MA, that comes with a lighthouse! Listed for $3,750,000, the waterfront home offers three bedrooms and 3.5 baths across 2,300 square feet. Designed to capture the feeling of living on a grand yacht, the property has a primary suite, wet bar, wraparound deck, and water views. The lighthouse even has a bedroom, bath, and wet bar.

For those with champagne taste on a beer budget (OK, imported beer), this charmer for $899,900 might be just the ticket: The Hyannis beach house offers three bedrooms and two bathrooms in a roomy 1,800 square feet. It’s a quintessential Cape Cod-style abode and features marsh views from the living room, which is nicely outfitted with a gas fireplace. Other outside access includes a dining room with sliding doors to large, private deck and a second-floor deck off of the bedroom.

Owned by Chuck Bond. I'd definitely say its one of the best places to live in Moscow. It's just off campus, affordably priced, and 'round the clock maintenance and speedy response to any issues. Extremely well maintained. Laundry facility on site and great neighbors! Nothing better than living in the Yacht Club for 3.5 years!! Chuck's amazing!
