John Bayliss started in 2002 taking his experience of a lifetime out on the open ocean and applying it to creating bulletproof sport fishing yachts, with the help of his team. Bayliss wanted to create and design his yachts to the best of his customer’s needs. So before they design a vessel they start with a series of questions and topics to get to know more about the consumer and how they want to use this boat; such as: What will this boat be used for? Will you be entertaining guests or solely for fishing? How far do you plan on traveling at a time? If you plan on fishing, do you fish offshore or inshore? And so on. Once the questionnaire is answered and they have come up with a plan in mind, the next step is the construction phase. Bayliss Yachts has had this step by step process since day one and it’s been the perfect process since.

Bayliss Boatworks Models In Production

Bayliss Game Boat 60’ Mama C

The first game boat concept for Bayliss is Mama C, she was built with one priority in mind, fishing. Low maintenance, ample storage and speed was the main focus for this build and that’s what she is. Mama C is powered by two MTU M96L at 1600 hp each, topping out at 45 knots with a cruising speed of 38.5 knots. She has a holding tank of 75 gallons and a fuel capacity of 1,350 gallons to ensure you catch the dinner that’s on the run! There are two staterooms aboard with two heads. The cockpit is equipped with a refrigerator, tackle storage and an extra-large ice bin for those extra-large fish you’’’ catch aboard a Mama C. This vessel is a center console style with both port and starboard seating, both with extra storage. 

Bayliss 77’ Wave Paver

A sport fish that is well assured to visit many fishing destinations. This vessel is equipped with four staterooms and five heads, extensive refrigeration and freezer space. The spacious pump room layout makes it easy for the Wave Paver to take on any scenario. It has a fuel capacity of 2,700 gallons and has two MTU M96L at 2600 hp each making the top speed of the Bayliss 77’ Wave Paver 43 knots and cruises at 35 knots. This particular vessel was built for owners that have a run a long-standing and successful fishing program, you will not be disappointed.

Bayliss 84’ Dirty Mines

Dirty Mines gets its name from being able to take on any task that is thrown its way. Five staterooms and six heads are aboard this vessel. Also, this vessel is the first of the Bayliss yachts to have a full beam aft master. The interior details are exquisite and great potential for a vessel to travel, fish and entertain, all in the same day. A true triple threat. The Bayliss 84’ Dirty Mines is powered by two M94 MTU’s with 2600 hp, each!

Bayliss 90’ Singularis

With five staterooms and six heads, the Bayliss 90’ Singularis is sure to have plentiful accommodations. With being Bayliss’ largest build to date, they definitely kept fishing and diving in mind with this beauty. Some additional details of this marvelous vessel are the teak ceilings, hidden Pullman bunks, marble throughout, teak and minimalistic accents all throughout the vessel. Topping out at 38 knots, the fuel capacity is 4,000 gallons with two 38 kW Northern Lights.

In Production: Bayliss Game Boat 62’ Tarheel

The introduction of the Bayliss Tarheel is a healthy synergy of Bayliss’ first two game boats, Mama C and Game Changer. Bayliss Yachts started the production of Tarheel in March 2018. She is to measure at 62 feet with a 18 foot 2 inch beam and twin MTU M96L 12V at 1920 hp each. There will be three staterooms aboard, along with two heads and a custom tackle room for the avid fisherman. Keep an eye out for Tarheel, she may be your next purchase!

In Production: Bayliss 75’

She started her production in February 2017 and won’t make her appearance until the summer of 2019, but the Bayliss 75’ is going to be 75 feet in length with a 20 foot 8 inch beam! She will have 4 staterooms and 3.5 heads plus a pantry everyone will want to own. The cockpit will have a Mezzanine Style and a teak aft bulkhead. The Bayliss 75’ will be a center console with two freezers and two helm chairs. Look out for her delivery in the late summer of 2019.

Bayliss Boatworks

Located in North Carolina on the U.S. Atlantic Coast, Bayliss Boatworks is the epitome of a Carolina luxury sportfishing yacht builder. Bayliss offers custom, cold-moulded wood sportfishing yachts up to 27.4 metres in length, built by hand with strict attention to detail.

A highly successful offshore tournament angler, John Bayliss found a berth as a mate on a charter sportfishing boat out of Hatteras Village, North Carolina, in 1975 and made captain within five years. He got his start in the yacht-building industry in 1997, when local shipyard Hatteras Yachts hired him to captain its demo boat, Hatterascal. In 2002, he opened his own shipyard, Bayliss Boatworks, in Wanchese, N.C.

Notable Yachts

In 2010, Bayliss launched the 20.72-metre custom sportfishing yacht Uno Mas . The yacht, which features naval architecture by Robert Ullberg, a longtime collaborator with the shipyard, was heralded as a next-generation sportfisher.

Bayliss Boatworks’ current flagship, the 25.6-metre luxury sportfisher Orion , was delivered in 2013. Also incorporating naval architecture by Robert Ullberg, she runs an impressive 42 knots at maximum speed.

At this writing, the shipyard had a 27.4-metre custom sportfishing superyacht in production, Singularis .

Bayliss Boatworks 60 Reviewed

John Bayliss and his team of boatbuilders at Bayliss Boatworks in Wanchese, North Carolina, is accustomed to working with owners to create hand-crafted sport-fishing machines. That was certainly the case when Bayliss and his team took on their first walkaround build: the 60-foot Sequentis .

A walkaround design is similar to an express-boat layout, but it has deep alleys around the perimeter of the vessel. This setup gives anglers 360-degree access around the boat for fighting fish. And since Sequentis was designed for tournament live-bait sailfishing in South Florida, there’s as much fishing to be done off the bow as there is from the more traditional cockpit. 

In keeping with this approach, and keying on the need for substantial quantities of live bait, Bayliss installed two livewells in the bow in addition to  wells in the transom and the cockpit. Proper pump selection and drainage were both key to make the intricate system function properly. There are also hidden fittings for removable on-deck livewells, adding to the system’s flexibility.

The 60-footer’s exterior layout demonstrates the builder’s penchant for efficient storage and attention to detail. Hand-selected teak makes up the cockpit sole, raised-bridge sole, forward walkaround deck and  the transom. Bayliss used traditional steam bending techniques to shape the walkaround deck—the result is as beautiful as it is durable. The bridge has a starboard-side dash with two Release Marine helm chairs along with a tackle center, a dinette table to starboard and a portside lounge. A sun pad and a forward bench are on the bow, as well as an anchor locker forward of the livewell and bait tubes. The starboard-side bridge bench seat houses a quick-change helium tank with custom brackets for ease of use when the wind is light and helium balloons are needed to keep the fishing kites flying properly. 

Belowdecks, the layout includes a combination salon and galley with a Miele cooktop and speed oven, a Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer and a stainless-steel sink. Also included is a day head with shower to starboard, and a forward stateroom with twin bunks. Though the interior is smaller in size than standard sport-fishing yachts, the same attention to detail was carried out when building the boat’s custom teak cabinetry, sofa and bunks.

In a sport where having the ability to quickly relocate to a hot bite can mean the difference between finishing in first place or last, Sequentis is fast. Powered by two MTU 12V2000 M96X diesel engines, this 60-foot walkaround reportedly hit speeds of well over 42 knots during the initial sea trials.

Boatbuilder John Bayliss and owner Jr. Davis have collaborated once again to create another world-class tournament-fishing battlewagon. When Davis planned to build another boat with the capability of fishing multiple destinations around the globe, his decision was quite easy. Having built a 77-footer more than five years ago, Davis knew exactly what was needed to accommodate—citing quietness, stability, ride and comfort to “extending my years of fishing.” And the Bayliss team is driven to produce that very thing, because Bayliss runs a competitive fishing program himself, adding a mindfulness that effectively translates into decades of experience for this new 75-footer called Wave Paver .

Cockpit and Mezzanine

The 75’s cockpit is laid out for a variety of billfishing: The transom fish box can host tuna tubes that drop into an inner lip allowing the teak lids to stay closed; the lazarette ice box doubles as dredge or bait storage, with easy access through a large hatch just aft of the rocket launcher; and port and starboard hatches allow access for maintenance and provide even more storage.

The mezzanine boasts vast amounts of storage also, including a heated area for chamois and wash mitts to help eliminate that sour, wet odor. There is no shortage of cold storage either, with three freezers and a drink box. Against the salon bulkhead to port, an aft-facing lounge, and to starboard, there is a cabinet containing a copious amount of custom storage and a grill. The custom storage is ­CNC-cut-specific, so not only do you know which item might be missing, the items also stay firmly in place.

And to keep Wave Paver stable in an obnoxious ­beam sea, a Seakeeper 18 resides in a watertight hatch forward of the Release Marine fighting chair.

Flybridge and Helm

The bridge is laid out in a center-console design with forward seating that contains a large freezer, and above the seat is another freezer that can double as more seating.

The console hosts two Garmin 22-inch multifunction displays, two 17-inch displays, VHF radios, and engine monitors. There are also two compartments to either side of the helm that contain the various switches, controls, systems-­monitoring displays and the stereo system. The safety gear is stored in the brow.

I noticed that the bridge wings were wider than usual, each with sliding pocket doors to store light-tackle spinning-gear outfits and gaffs. I cannot stress enough the fact that this 75-footer has zero dead space, and the crew has taken great care in placing every item so that when you are asked to retrieve something, they can tell you exactly where to find it—smart and efficient.

A stained walnut interior with black leather soft goods offers a stunning contrast to the white dinette. This is the first walnut interior for Bayliss Boatworks, and true to form, they nailed it, utilizing different shades and two varied wood species. Immediately on each side of the salon are storage areas for headsets and accessories and satellite phones, in addition to a USB charging station and a catch-all drawer. The cabinet below the starboard-side window conceals a retractable 55-inch television.

Under each section of the U-shaped sofa reveals more massive amounts of storage that are organized utilizing dividers. Breakaway panels behind the sofa backs allow access to components for easy service. The Wave Paver program typically consists of a large crew, so the need for seating and open space is vital. A Release Marine custom Circassian and black walnut coffee table articulates to dining height with multiple leaves to double the table in size, while a smaller matching table is found forward at the dinette. And underfoot, a raised platform hosts a large storage drawer loaded with trolling plugs.

The galley is a chef’s dream with a Wolf cooktop and oven, Viking microwave, three Sub-Zero refrigeration units, and granite countertops. Each drawer and cabinet are meticulously crafted for silverware, cutlery, and storage containers to maximize space and minimize movement.

Forward to port is a spacious day head with access to storage in the brow of the house. Across from the head, there’s an incredible pantry and minibar. The pantry is designed to reduce traffic in the galley, and houses a countertop, ice maker, liquor storage, plumbed coffee maker, spice rack and cookware storage, and other chef accoutrements. This is quite an impressive and well-thought-out area to accommodate the needs of this large traveling crew.

As you walk down the companionway, the book-matched walnut veneers overhead provide a nice departure from the traditional soft liners, and even the bezels of the LED lights are matched in walnut. Completely custom and fashion-forward, no detail was left behind. To port, the tackle room stores tackle boxes, rods and reels, foul-weather gear, and a washer/dryer. Across the hall are two crew staterooms with a Jack-and-Jill-style head, and each bunk provides storage below.

Just prior to the master stateroom entry, a raised area reveals a hatch to access more storage, and tunnels lead to access the pump room bulkhead, allowing the crew to access the forward tunnel without disturbing the owner at rest. The master stateroom also sports a queen-size bed with storage below, a sofa, also with storage below, hanging lockers, night tables, and an en suite head with a cavernous shower.

Engine Room, Pump Room and Performance

Through a crash door in the tackle room, you enter the air-conditioned pump room. Contained here are the water pumps, watermakers, chillers, a Seakeeper 9, and the proprietary Bayliss freshwater cooling system that supplies fresh water to all components that would normally require raw-water cooling, including both Seakeepers.

Another crash door leads to the engine room, where you stand between the 16-cylinder MTUs. Looking aft reveals a Northern Lights generator on each side. Bayliss is always thinking ahead of the maintenance and repair curve: Both of the generators have the drip pans removed and are mounted to a thick piece of aluminum on top of Starboard. By removing five of the six mounting bolts, the generators can pivot away from the aft bulkhead to provide easier access to the back sides—ingenious, to say the least. Both the pump room and engine room have custom tool drawers that are ­CNC-cut foam for each tool that resides there.

The 2,600 hp MTUs are impressively quiet, clean-burning, and allow Wave Paver to show off at various speeds. She is quite nimble at 1,800 rpm and provides a comfortable 32-knot cruise; at 2,100 rpm, she hits 38-plus knots; and a fully loaded top-end rockets her out at a speed of 44.6 knots.

John Bayliss and his crew, along with input from experienced owners, continue to push the envelope of innovation and craftsmanship to ultimately deliver an award-winning vessel to the discerning customer. Keep an eye out for Wave Paver —or her 77-foot sister—because wherever you see them, I am sure they will be paving waves to the top of the leaderboard.

Timmerman Yachts is a Russian builder of quality luxury motor yachts. Based in Moscow, it is owned by a group of Dutch and Russian investors and operates out of Moscow Shipyard. Several noted naval architecture and yacht design firms are involved with Timmerman, including Vripack, Guido de Groot Design, Ginton Naval Architects, Jon Bannenberg Ltd., and Francis Design Ltd.

Founded in 2003, the company was named for 17th century Dutch boat builder Franz Timmerman who brought Dutch boat manufacturing techniques to Russia and co-founded the Russian navy. Timmerman Yachts has more than 1,000 employees working at the Moscow Shipyard.

Timmerman has delivered a number of semi-custom luxury yachts between 26-47 metres in length, including TM26 and Timmerman FD-51, designed by Francis Design Ltd. Other notable Timmerman yachts include Victoria M, Alexandra (now Latitude) and Olsten 125′.

One of the 10 largest yacht builders in the world, Timmerman is focused on building high-quality luxury yachts at more competitive prices. Its Russian-Dutch partnership provides great yacht-building capabilities. Timmerman builds yacht to the highest standards and holds DNV, MCA and Russian River Register certification. The company reportedly has more than a dozen yachts in some phase of construction.

A Day on Blue View (Bayliss 78′)

Delivered in May of 2020, Blue View (Bayliss 78′) has spent most of her time fishing the waters around Florida, but this past winter she made her way to Costa Rica to break into the tournament scene. The Blue View sportfishing team participated in the 2023 Los Sueños Triple Crown and made the most of each day fishing in the Pacific. Check out this video for a glimpse into ‘A Day on Blue View’.

A Day on Tarheel – Bayliss 62′

In Tarheel, we’ve taken what we’ve learned over 24 builds and distilled it into a boat that we feel embodies our mission. The 62′ Tarheel is an open invitation for you. It’s only ours for a short time, but our modus operandi is to have you be an actual part of understanding one of our builds, fresh out of the barn. It’s a case of clarity: a way to open up and invite our existing extended family of friends and customers, as well as new ones, to see for themselves.

A Day on GameChanger – Bayliss 62′

After her December 2018 christening, GameChanger wasted no time getting down to Costa Rica to fish. We tagged along with the owner and crew for a day of fishing in Los Sueños, Costa Rica just before the final leg of the Los Sueños Triple Crown in March 2019 (in which GameChanger placed 8th).

We are pleased to announce delivery of Bayliss Hull 18 77′ Clean Sweep! From the vision, to the planning, to the 68,145 man-hours that went in to crafting this vessel, she represents what can be accomplished with hard work, determination, perseverance, and teamwork. Her owners built her for extensive travel and fishing, and we are excited about her being ready to roll.

Bayliss Hull 16 84′ Orion Virtual Tour Video

We are pleased to release the much-anticipated virtual tour video for Bayliss Boatworks Hull 16, Orion. At 84’ she is the largest boat we have delivered to date, and she is a culmination her owners’ ideas, along with over 70,000 man hours that made the vision a reality. As you will see in this video, Orion has many innovative features incorporated into her 5 stateroom / 6 head layout. She is built to travel and fish anywhere in the world, and be comfortable doing so. This video speaks volumes about Orion. We were offshore of Oregon Inlet for a photo shoot with photographer Ray Matthews and videographer Chris Hannant getting some running footage, and we wanted to share a preview of what’s to come! Bayliss Boatyard During Hurricane Irene

During Hurricane Irene, we hauled and blocked 52 boats in two days. We then checked on them every three hours during the storm. Every boat was safe and sound. When your boat is in our Hurricane Assistance Program, you are guaranteed haul out in the event of a major hurricane or storm.
