Thinking about taking a catamaran tour in Manuel Antonio National Park?

These tours are an absolute blast! Hopping on a catamaran is an awesome way to enjoy beautiful coastal views and spot marine life, plus there’s food, drinks, and snorkeling. Seriously, what could be better?

Since these tours are so fun, we tested out quite a few of them while living in Costa Rica, and now we’ve rounded up our top picks for you. This is not something you get to do every day, so it’s important to make the right decision and get the most out of your adventure.

Quick Pick: Our Favorite Tour

Dolphin seen on a catamaran cruise in Manuel Antonio Costa Rica 2

Don’t have time to read the full article?

Our personal FAVORITE tour is this half-day catamaran experience along the coast. There’s the chance to see dolphins and turtles, go snorkeling, enjoy an included lunch and open bar, and watch the sunset! Check out all the 5-star reviews and book this tour here .

Tip: Reserve this tour early to guarantee your spot and get FREE cancellation 24 hours before you go!

1. Half-Day Sailing Tour with Lunch and Open Bar

Bailey on a catamaran drinking cocktails in Manuel Antonio Costa Rica 2

  • Price: $95 USD
  • Duration: 4 hours
  • Time: 9 am or 2 pm
  • Highlights: Spotting dolphins and sea turtles, snorkeling at Biesanz Beach, sunset if you choose afternoon sail
  • Inclusions: Unlimited soft drinks and cocktails, snorkeling gear, lunch (vegetarian option available), hotel pickup and drop-off
  • Rating: 4.5 Stars ( Check 500 reviews here !)
  • Free cancellation: Yes

We had so much fun on this catamaran tour ! We had already explored Manuel Antonio on foot, but seeing the park’s gorgeous coastline from out on the water was just as incredible. We were so excited when we spotted dolphins and sea turtles from the boat, and it’s also possible to spot whales here, which is one advantage of visiting during the off-season.

We also loved the snorkeling session at Biesanz Beach, because we got to see tons of tropical species like puffer fish. It was like a rainbow down there! The crew was on hand to help anyone who wasn’t a confident swimmer, and the gear was in good condition.

The on-board lunch was really tasty, too. We got fresh fish, which we both really enjoyed. And of course, the open bar didn’t hurt at all!

Having said that, we still think that this tour is the best choice for families looking to do a catamaran cruise in Manuel Antonio, as well as those just looking to relax. It’s definitely less party-orientated than other tours we have done.

We did this tour in the afternoon, so we got to round off our day with an epic sunset. We’d highly recommend doing the same, if you can, as it was the perfect end to an amazing day. And if you’re thinking of doing this tour in the high season, make sure to book in advance!

Reserve your spot on our FAVORITE catamaran tour here!

2. All-Inclusive Half-Day Catamaran Tour

Bailey swims on a catamaran cruise in Manuel Antonio Costa Rica

  • Price: $83 USD
  • Duration: 3-4 hours
  • Highlights: Snorkeling, spotting marine life, coastal views
  • Inclusions: Buffet lunch, snorkeling equipment, fruit juice, cocktails, hotel pickup and drop-off
  • Rating: 4.5 Stars ( Check 300+ reviews here )

This all-inclusive catamaran tour is our top pick for budget travelers. It’s the cheapest one on our list but still has pretty generous inclusions. I mean, what’s not to like about a buffet lunch and open bar?

We loved the lively atmosphere on board the boat. The music was upbeat, the crew had fun, and our fellow travelers were all in high spirits, so it was a good party atmosphere overall!

We saw dolphins and whales, which was amazing and got to go snorkeling, too. When we spotted the dolphins in the distance, the captain actually took us closer so that we could all get a better look!

The lunch was really tasty, too. We ate tons of fish and pasta, which was needed to soak up all of the cocktails we had. However, we also thought that the vegetarian option looked good, too.

We would recommend doing this tour in the morning during the rainy season to get the best weather. However, if you’re visiting during the dry season, then we suggest going in the afternoon, as this is a surefire way to catch an epic sunset.

Book in advance here as this tour tends to sell out thanks to its competitive price!

Why We Book Tours with Viator

Viator is a trusted online booking system for tours around the world! We almost always book our tours using Viator for a couple of reasons:

  • Free cancellation on most tours – Most of the tours on Viator allow you to cancel and get a full refund up to 24 hours in advance. This is handy in case plans change, or if booking an outdoor activity, the weather forecast is looking grim.
  • Reserve now and pay later – You can secure your spot on some of the most popular tours well in advance and not pay until closer to the day of the tour.
  • Lowest price guarantee – If you happen to find the same tour at a lower price elsewhere, Viator will refund you the price difference.
  • Pay in your chosen currency – Avoid costly international transaction fees by choosing to pay in your home currency.
  • Peace of mind – When booking with tour operators you find in person on the street or in small booking offices, you are often promised one thing and given another. This online platform holds tour operators accountable with a written description of inclusions as well as the opportunity for customers to leave reviews.

3. Manuel Antonio Catamaran Tour

Bailey drinks a cocktail on a catamaran tour in manuel Antonio Costa Rica

  • Price: $86 USD
  • Duration: 3.5 hours
  • Time: 9 am or 2 pm (dry season only)
  • Highlights: Snorkeling, dolphin watching, water slides, jacuzzis on board
  • Inclusions: Lunch, snacks, 4 alcoholic drinks, snorkeling equipment, hotel pickup and drop-off
  • Rating: 4.5 stars ( Check 180+ reviews here )
  • Free cancelation: Yes

Those who want to party should go on this catamaran tour ! We had an absolute blast and spent the day sipping cocktails, jumping into the water, and soaking in the onboard hot tubs.

Oh yes – we were super impressed by this bougie boat! In addition to the tubs, there were also water slides and tanning meshes on board. Basically, this tour is the ideal choice for groups of friends looking for a fun day out. We met lots of new people and even ended up dancing after the cocktails took hold!

But let’s not forget about the natural beauty, either. We loved taking in the views of Manuel Antonio as we sunned ourselves on the tanning meshes (which are also great for Instagram photos, just FYI) and we spotted lots of dolphins. The snorkeling portion of the tour was fun, too, and we really appreciated the fresh, local lunch that we were served.

All in all, this is a very memorable way to see Manuel Antonio! It’s a lively tour, and it’s the perfect combination of relaxation and adventure. We have to give a big shout-out to the crew, as well, because they really couldn’t have been more friendly or helpful. Basically, if you’re looking for a fun time out on the water, don’t hesitate to book this tour!

Grab your spot here and you can choose to pay later!

Other Must-Do Activities While You’re in Manuel Antonio

Bailey and Daniel take a selfie while ATVing in Costa Rica

Once you arrive in Manuel Antonio, there’s so much to see and do! You can check out our full guide on Manuel Antonio or browse our favorite activities below!

  • Visit the National Park – Of course, you’ll want to see Manuel Antonio National Park! It’s easy to hike through on your own, but we find it’s nice to have a guide – especially to help you spot wildlife.  This specific tour is only $30 USD and includes a 2-hour guided walk through the park. After the tour, you’re free to enjoy the beaches and relax.
  • Coffee and chocolate tour – Coffee and chocolate are two of my favorite things. So, it should come as no surprise I just had to join this top-rated coffee and chocolate tour in Manuel Antonio ! The tour teaches you about the historical importance of cacao as well as the entire process of making chocolate. It’s a fantastic experience!
  • Ziplining – Did you know that Manuel Antonio is home to the longest twin zipline in Costa Rica? Well, on this ziplining tour , you’ll get to zoom through the treetops on a huge tandem zipline! You can race with your friends and enjoy the experience together!
  • ATVing – This ATV tour is so much fun and takes you into the jungle to explore at high speed and then refresh in a natural waterfall. You’ll get wet and dirty, but have a fantastic time! A traditional Costa Rica lunch is also included.

Where to Stay in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica

Hotel Villas Lirio Manuel Antonio

There are tons of different hotels to choose from when deciding where to stay in Manuel Antonio . Here are a few of our favorites for all budgets:

Parador Resort and Spa – $$$

Those who enjoy staying in a beautiful hotel and don’t mind paying for it, have to check out Parador Resort and Spa . This place does tick a lot of boxes! It’s only a short walk to the beach, has fantastic panoramic views thanks to its elevated location, and has two infinity pools.

The hotel is surrounded by rainforest, so there’s tons of wildlife around too. It’s more around the $350 USD+ per night mark, but is great for a luxury getaway! You can check availability and book online here .

Hotel Villas Lirio – $$

For the medium-budget traveler, my top choice is  Hotel Villas Lirio (pictured above). This gorgeous hotel is reasonably priced but has some very luxurious features such as an outdoor pool, tropical manicured gardens, an included breakfast, and a restaurant.

The hotel is also located in the heart of Manuel Antonio and is only meters from the main road where the bus down to the beach and national park goes (it’s a 1-minute drive or a short walk). Be sure to book it in advance as it is often fully booked. You can book Hotel Villas Lirio here .

Selina – $

One of the best budget-friendly places to stay in Manuel Antonio is  Selina . Selina has hostels all over Costa Rica and the world. They always offer an ideal place to stay with clean rooms, a great bar, and a social atmosphere. In Manuel Antonio, Selina is no different, and the hostel comes with a huge pool, restaurant and bar, private rooms, and dorm rooms.

Rates begin at $57 USD per night. You can  book Selina here on Hostelworld or  here on Booking.com .

Getting Around Costa Rica

Bailey with our rental car near Rio Celeste Costa Rica

How you choose to get around Costa Rica is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your holiday here! How you do it depends on your budget, travel style, and comfort level.

Renting a Car

Without a doubt, the number one way to explore Costa Rica is in a rental car. We book rental cars on the Discover Cars website as we have had good experiences with them in the past.

One of the things you need to watch for when renting a car in Costa Rica is the mandatory insurance that the government requires you to have. There are a lot of very cheap rentals that don’t include this mandatory insurance (TPL) in the original booking price, but there are also ones that do. To avoid additional surprise charges when you pick up your rental car, be sure to rent a car that includes the mandatory insurance when you book.

Thankfully, on Discover Cars it’s easy to tell apart the companies that include the mandatory insurance and those that don’t. The trick is you can’t pick any car on their website. In the picture below, you can see this rental car, with pick up in Jaco, includes the TPL. That means the mandatory insurance is included in the price. Any cover you get above that is extra.

Of course, I still suggest getting the full coverage offered by Discover Cars, which covers you even more.

You can  browse cars on Discover Cars here .

TPL Cover Costa Rica

Book Shuttles

If renting a car isn’t in your budget, you don’t feel comfortable driving in Costa Rica , or you just don’t like driving, shuttles are the next best option. There are hundreds of shuttle routes available all over the country, and they are very affordable.

Shuttles in Costa Rica are specifically for tourists and often include pick up and drop off at your selected hotels and airports. The drivers also speak some English, and the vehicles have air conditioning. You’ll also be guaranteed a seat when you book a shuttle (which isn’t the case with the public bus system.)

To get the best price, use the website  Bookaway . They compare all the offers and prices of shuttle companies in Costa Rica so you get the best price! Honestly, we have saved so much money using Bookaway!

You can search for shuttles online on Bookaway here.

Lastly, you can use the public bus system. On short journeys, such as from San Jose to La Fortuna or Uvita to Manuel Antonio, this system is great. However, the longer the journey the more hassle and time spent on a bus. It’s undoubtedly best to save the public bus in Costa Rica for short and straightforward trips!

The public buses are definitely the cheapest way to get around Costa Rica, but they are not always very reliable and schedules often change without notice and delays are to be expected. The buses can also be very crowded and hot – so just be prepared!

It’s also good to speak some Spanish if you plan on riding the public bus since most drivers and ticket booth operators don’t speak English.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance!

If you’re looking to save money on travel insurance, we currently use and recommend  SafetyWing . We’ve been using their coverage since 2018 and they’ve had our backs when we needed emergency flights and got sick overseas.

SafetyWing is one of the cheapest providers out there and covers everything from medical costs to lost luggage, travel delays, and emergency flights. A huge difference we’ve found between them and other companies is that they let you take out a policy AFTER leaving your home country. We’ve also found it handy that it’s a monthly payment rather than a lump sum, and you can get a refund for unused time.

SafetyWing has helped us out in some scary situations before and their affordable coverage has given us peace of mind.

Book your travel insurance with SafetyWing here!

If you’re visiting Manuel Antonio on your next trip to Costa Rica, you’re no doubt looking forward to spotting wildlife in the national park, doing adventure activities in the nearby mountains, and relaxing on the beach. But a trip to this area wouldn’t be complete without experiencing the Pacific coastline by boat. In this post, we will tell you about our experience on the Ocean King catamaran cruise and how you can enjoy it too.

We started our tour at Marina Pez Vela in Quepos. Although Quepos has more of a city feel and the downtown isn’t very scenic, the marina has amazing facilities. Some of the best restaurants in the area are located here, and the views of the bay, especially at sunset, are outstanding.

Marina Pez Vela in Quepos Costa Rica

After waiting for everyone to arrive, it was time to board the boat.

There are a few different options for cruises out of Manuel Antonio/Quepos. Since our son, Sam, was only one at the time, we felt the most comfortable going on the biggest boat, the Ocean King.

The Ocean King is a 100-foot catamaran with two decks (upper and lower), big open areas to relax, two Jacuzzis, a full bar, bathrooms, and waterslides off the back.

Sun Deck Ocean King

After boarding, we were given a safety talk by the crew and were briefed about what our morning would entail.

First, we would head south to the shores of Manuel Antonio National Park. On the way, we would be looking for whales (seasonal), dolphins, and seabirds.

Next, we’d go to a secluded cove for some snorkeling, swimming, jumping, and water-sliding. And finally, we’d enjoy lunch (or dinner depending on your tour time) on the way back to the marina.

For information on booking this tour, see the end of this post.

A Party on the Water

As the boat left the marina and headed into the ocean, the staff put on some upbeat music, set out fresh fruit and snacks, and opened up the bar. Everyone was allowed two beers and two cocktails each, as well as unlimited juice and soda.

Even though it was still mid-morning, the bar got busy with fruity cocktails being handed out with big smiles.

What You’ll See

The views of the hilly green coastline are amazing from out on the boat.

While on land it seems like there is a lot of development, from the water you can really appreciate how much of Manuel Antonio and Quepos remains engulfed in thick jungle. Adding to the scenery, we passed small rocky islands and local fishing boats too.

View of the islands off of Manuel Antonio

Along the way, we saw some seabirds like the Brown Booby and Magnificent Frigatebird. For those of you into birding, these species are considered pelagic. This means that they spend most of their time over the open ocean, with only short periods of rest on tiny islands or drifting wood. Some of them were showing off and got very close to the boat, which was cool for us birding geeks.

The captain and crew were keeping a lookout for dolphins and humpback whales too, but we weren’t lucky enough to see any on our trip.

Dolphins, we were told, can be seen any time of year, but the whales have distinct migration seasons. (Check out our Whale Watching post for more info.) We were at the very start of the December to April migration, which typically has lower numbers of whales. Nonetheless, we had plenty to look at with the islands, birds, and stunning coastline.

It was also interesting to get to see Manuel Antonio National Park from a different angle.

As we motored close to shore, one of the crew members told us a little about the park over the P.A. system. Things like how Manuel Antonio National Park is among the smallest parks in the country but also one of the most visited. He then explained about the diversity of wildlife that can be found inside, both on land and in the adjacent area of protected ocean.

The View of Manuel Antonio National Park from the water

The snorkeling and swimming part of the trip was probably our favorite.

We stopped in a tranquil cove, the secluded Biesanz Beach. Nearby, there was a rock protruding out of the water that attracted a lot of fish. Although Costa Rica isn’t known for having the clearest water for snorkeling, we were surprised that we could see a lot when we got close up.

The swimming was also nice since the water was warm. With the boat parked, the crew opened up the two waterslides off the back and a jumping-off point from the top deck. The slides were a hit with kids and adults alike and really shot you out into the water at the end. The jump from the deck was just scary enough to be fun too. It was about 15 feet high and some of the more adventurous people even dove head first!

Waterslide aboard the Ocean King Catamaran

Lunch/Dinner

After we dried off from the swim and snorkel portion, lunch was already being served. It was buffet style and we were each given a delicious heaping plate with locally caught fish, rice, vegetables, and salad.

Soon it was time to head back to the marina. We took in the views again and got to talk to some of the other people to see where they were visiting from. The crowd was really mixed, with people of all ages from around the world.

W e loved the morning tour, but are already looking forward to taking the afternoon one next time. The sunset views are supposed to be spectacular!

Additional Info and Tips

Staff and Boat: The staff was very professional, but friendly and fun too. The boat itself was in excellent condition, clean and well maintained. We felt very safe on it.

Rainy Season: Tours are offered twice a day, but during certain times of year when rain is likely later in the day (May through November), they may only run the morning boat.

Music/Environment: The music on the boat makes for a fun, party-like atmosphere, but it is quite loud, so skip this tour if you’re looking for a quiet excursion.

Sun: The upper deck is nice and sunny if you want to work on your tan, but the lower deck is mostly covered if you prefer shade.

Full view Ocean King boat

Snorkeling: If your main goal is snorkeling, you may be disappointed with this tour. The snorkeling component is only a small portion of the day, as conditions are usually not the best in Manuel Antonio.

Caño Island is a wonderful spot for snorkeling, however, and isn’t too far from Manuel Antonio. Tours to Caño leave out of  Uvita (about 1.25 hrs. south of Manuel Antonio). If you want help booking a tour to Caño, email us at bookings(at)twoweeksincostarica(dot)com.

Kids: The crew took safety very seriously and had more than enough lifejackets for everyone. They had some smaller ones for kids, but nothing small enough for a toddler or baby. If you’re traveling with a little one, we recommend bringing your own lifejacket like we did. We bought this one that goes up to 30 pounds for our one-year old. Also, if you have a toddler, there is a lot of room for them to run around in the middle of the lower deck. This area is surrounded by benches so it is fairly easy to keep track of them too!

What to Bring: The boat has cubbies that close for your valuables, but we recommend bringing only what you need, just to be safe. You’ll probably want your bathing suit, sun hat, sunglasses, towel, sunscreen, extra clothes, camera, and cash for tips or to buy photos.

Photographer: The boat has a professional photographer on board. CDs with your personal pictures and some stock ones are available at the end of the tour for $30 (cash only).

I did this with my 24-year-old daughter and we had a blast. I was worried about the 8-drink limit (4 beers and 4 mixed drinks), but I ended up stopping at 5 or 6.

Our only complaint was that they made us wear life preserver belts for snorkeling so we couldn’t leave the surface to explore underwater. We had to find rock outcroppings that were just below the water to watch the fish.

Agreed Wayne. We weren’t big fans of the life jackets either, but they did come in handy on the way back to the boat. The current was very strong when we went out and made for a tiring swim back, especially after all the snorkeling. Thanks for sharing your experience. Glad you and your daughter had a good time!

We just did this in December, which can still be rainy. It was one of the highlights of our trip. Beautiful views of the coast and sunset. Dolphins jumping beside us! Birds and stingrays too. Healthy, fresh food with great cocktails. The staff was fun, attentive and responsible. Highly recommended.

Great to hear, Sue! We just went in December too but didn’t see any dolphins- glad you had better luck. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Hi and thanks for your previous info on another thread! About the catamaran cruise from Manuel Antonio, does it ever get cancelled due to rough seas? What is the ocean usually like at end of February? Two of us get motion sickness but will be taking a small dose of Gravol before heading out. If booking through you, is it just a reservation and we pay at the marina? I am just thinking about the weather before we confirm. BTW, we ended up booking our 2 nights in Jaco. Places were getting booked up quickly online. Thanks again, May

Hi May, Sorry for the delay. It takes us a few days to respond to comments because we receive a lot of them. The catamaran cruise can get cancelled due to rough seas, but the ocean is very calm in February so I wouldn’t worry at all about that. This is dry season when we don’t really see any rain or storms. Rough seas are more of a concern in the rainy season.

The boat is really big so you will probably be fine with sea sickness, but it’s not a bad idea to take something for motion sickness just in case.

When you book through us, we take care of everything for you. Once we confirm availability for your preferred date, we send you an invoice through PayPal and then reserve your spot with the tour operator. We also send you a confirmation with all the details for the tour like when to arrive, transportation, etc. Let me know if you would like us to book it and I can send you an email. That’s great that you found something in Jaco too!

Do you suggest this tour for people who can’t swim? How much of the tour is devoted to the snorkeling/swimming? Thanks!

Hi Zainab, Only about 1 hour of the tour is dedicated to snorkeling/swimming so it is still a great tour for non-swimmers. While people are in the water, you will have more of the boat to yourself (more space on the upper deck, on the trampolines for sunning, etc.). They also start lunch towards the end of the swimming portion.

Great info on this site! We are going on a catamaran cruise and we’ve never snorkeled before (so, even though it isn’t the best snorkeling there is in Manuel Antonio, we’d still like to try it out!). The equipment is included in the cruise… because it’s unfamiliar, I just had a question about hygiene and how that’s handled with equipment that you don’t own yourself. Are there parts (mouthpiece) that are disposable? (Hope that’s not a silly question!)

Also, thanks for mentioning about the cubbies on board as I’ve been wondering about storing my camera while swimming. Do they usually lock? Or is this usually a non-issue in your experience?

Hi Coco, We’re not totally sure but think that they soak the equipment in some kind of disinfecting solution. When they hand them out to everyone, they’re stored in a big barrel with water and what we would assume would be some type of cleaner. Not sure, though, you could ask. I wouldn’t worry too much about having things stolen. We’ve never heard of any problems and usually people don’t hang out near the cubbies because they’d rather be out on the deck. It’s still a good idea to sort of keep an eye on your stuff, but we did store our camera in there when we took the tour.

We have a large group of 22 people with teens and adults. Can they accommodate a group that size in March? What is the name of this charter, so I can contact them?

Hi Heather, We’d be happy to check availability with the catamaran for your group of 22 if you would like. We may also be able to get you a small discount as well. Feel free to reply to this thread with some dates that would work for you, and we can contact the company, and then get back to you by email. You can also contact us through our Tour Booking Service page if you would prefer. Thanks!

We are interested in a tour on Wednesday 3/25 for the afternoon tour. Do you have availability for 22 travelers? Please send total and do you pick up from our hotel? Please confirm availability, as we are also looking into additional options. Is there an additional fee for park entry with this tour?

My husband and son will be in CR March 3-10, After spending 2 nights in Monteverde we were planning on taking the ferry over to the Nicoyan Peninsula ( is this the best option or should we drive) Wwill be spending 2 days at a hotel near the Paquera ferry on the the Nicoyan Peninsula. Other than the bioluminescence kayak tour we have nothing else planned. We are renting a 4 x 4 and have our own snorkel equipment. We really would love to do some snorkeling ( but don’t want to take a boat out to Tortuga Island because we heard it is very crowded), would love to see some waterfalls with swimming below. Any recommendations…. sounds like we might want to head to Montezuma Beach, but there is not much mention of Tambor beach which is much closer(not sure why)? Or should we just do Curu? Thank you for the detailed page regarding taking the ferry. Would like to take the 5pm ferry from Paquera back to Puntarenas. We will be staying in Bejuco. Wondering if the roads from the ferry to Bejuco are okay to be driven after sunset. After reading many posts re: roads, signs, conditions traveling is questionable especially after dark. We will be using the WAZE app to get to our destinations. So guess I’m mostly concerned about the road conditions. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello. We are interested in booking an sunset cruise with you for Jan 15 or 16th. Do you have availability? There will be 3 of us.

Hi Lisa, We will send you an email with the information today.

You mentioned that you did the Ocean King because it’s larger and you had a child with you. Is there reputable, smaller catamaran that you have used?

Can you comment on the round trip hotel transportation they provide? If the allotted time is from 1:30 to 5:30pm, does that mean you will be dropped off by 5:30, or the tour will run til then, and transportation will require additional time? Trying to make the most of our time in Manuel Antonio lol

Hi Naureen, The boat leaves at 2 pm so pickup times start a little after 1:00. The boat gets back to the marina after at 5:30 so you’d get to Manuel Antonio around 6 pm. Hope that helps!

We live in CR so we tend to avoid touristy stuff but friends came to visit for a week. We decided to play tourist with them in Manuel Antonio and decided our big splurge would be the catamaran booze cruise. EXCELLENT choice! We had so much fun. We were also concerned about the 8 drink limit/weak drinks and brought our own bottle of rum. We never did hit our 8 drinks but we were glad we had our bottle as the first couple of drinks were weak (so we added a shot to them). But once our waiter got to know us he started bringing us doubles. If you like your drinks strong just be honest from the get-go and you probably won’t need your own bottle. Highlights were…

The people watching. Very entertaining. We sat on the upper deck at the front so we had views of the party action in all directions.

Dolphins. We saw lots.

Swimming/Jumping from the top deck.

We are looking for a big boat, like the one in your blog. But to go out to Cano island. So far the ones we have found, were small boats. Please advise.

Hi Jackie, Cano Island is a national park so I think the government regulates which boats can go to it. There are no large boats that we know of. You could probably get a bigger boat out of Manuel Antonio to take you to that general area, but I’m not sure they would be able to go to the actual island and waters surrounding it that are protected.

The catamaran (the one with double slides & Jacuzzi) do they run every day?

We are planning a trip to Manuel Antonio Dec 27th – Dec 31st and would love to include this in our itinerary! We will have 6 children ages 10yrs – 2yrs; do you think this would be appropriate for them? Any survival suggestions?? 😉 We’d be happy to book through you; your website has been so helpful in planning our vacation!

Hi Laura, I think we already got back to you in reply to your email about this. Let us know if it didn’t come through and we would be happy to resend. Thanks!

Catamaran Sailing and snorkeling in Manuel Antonio

Our private catamaran sailing and snorkeling tour is the best way to explore the most amazing natural highlights in Manuel Antonio and Quepos.

The tour leaves early in the morning at around 8 am and returns by  12 ( 9 – 1 pm is also available ). It can also leave in the afternoons, from 2 to 6 pm.

catamaran tour costa rica manuel antonio

The tour is 100 % private, aboard the nicest catamaran in Manuel Antonio ( sailboats and yachts are also available ).

  • Crew service

Combining sailing and snorkeling is definitely a great blend, and our catamaran gives you the chance to reach areas you normally cannot reach, especially all the hidden spots between Quepos and Manuel Antonio National Park, including Playa Biesanz Beach, many rocky reefs, islets, and hidden bays and small coves.

catamaran tour costa rica manuel antonio

The area, although not that large, is one of the few areas along the Costa Rica Central Pacific that offers a more dramatic coastline, with rocks, cliffs and steep hills that meet the ocean, all of which provides the perfect framework for an interesting and exploratory type of tour.

Several snorkeling spots are found along this area, and along with the crew, you will be able to immerse yourself into the underwater world and the many colorful creates that inhabit the Pacific Ocean waters in Costa Rica. Angels, moray eels, surgeon fish, butterfly fish, emperor fish, parrot fish, many species of rays, even nurse sharks and white tip reef sharks may be encountered.

( Please note visibility can change from ok to amazing, with records of 90 FEET ).

More than snorkeling…

catamaran tour costa rica manuel antonio

Although snorkeling is one of the highlights of this private sailing charter, there is much more to it. The outstanding service onboard, the great food and the open bar service will complete the experience.

Our friendly and knowledgeable crew members will make everything in their hands to create a custom designed tour for you.

During some months of the year, July to October, and from January to March, you may also very possibly encounter humpback whales which come from the South and the North Pacific to feed and train their calves.

This spectacle is also quite amazing, especially watching them breech. Other species encountered during our sailing trips include sea turtles, oceanic bird species like the Brown Boobie and more.

Too book a private catamaran trip all we require is to know the dates, the number of people ( in case of children the age of the children is also quite important ) and last, the type of tour interested.

A description of the catamaran tour

By now you are probably wondering the details of the catamaran coastal cruise in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica.   The first part is by picking you up at your Hotel or Villa.   Afterwards, you are brought down to the Marina Pez Vela where you will be greeted by the staff of the catamaran tour who will take you to the boat.   Once you are aboard, you will receive a short safety instruction by your guide.

The cruise will start by visiting the beaches of the Manuel Antonio National Park.   The crew on the boat will then go searching for dolphins and other marine life.   Typically this can be noticed by flying birds as they represent a signal of activity underwater.   Once you have had the opportunity to see marine life, you will then go snorkeling in a nearby reef.   This reef provides a wonderful variety of small reef fish for you to see.   You don`t have to worry about brining your own snorkeling equipment, as this is provided for you during the catamaran tour.

Some people decide to stay near the boat because it has a waterslide and when the boat is stopped, you can take advantage of the waterslide on the back to slide into the pacific ocean.

When you are done snorkeling, it will be time to serve you the complete meal provided during the cruise.   This meal is rice, fish and vegetables.   Everything is prepared fresh on the boat during the cruise, so nothing is frozen.   There is a chef on the boat who is responsible for preparing the meal for you.

For those who haven`t been cruising on a catamaran boat, let me be the first to say that it is extremely safe.   The entire catamaran tour in Manuel Antonio is always staying close to shore and the boat goes at a very slow speed.   The catamaran boats are also equipped with life jackets and all of the safety equipment.

Costa Rica in October: What to Know

September 5, 2024 By Sammi Leave a Comment

October in Costa Rica tends to get a bad rep and it’s understandable why – it’s typically the rainiest month for most of the country. However, not all of the country is under water in October! If you can only visit Costa Rica in October, you should hop over to the Caribbean coast as it enjoys the most sunshine and least rainfall during that month.

To be completely honest, it’s not the best month to visit Costa Rica (unless you’re going to the Caribbean side) if you want to avoid rain and experience Costa Rica to the absolute fullest, but there are still upsides to visiting in October.

We will discuss all about what Costa Rica in October is like in this post.

If you’re looking to save some $$ on your trip, check out our Mytanfeet deals page! We partnered with a rental car company, hotels and tour operators to give discounts exclusively for our readers. Click here to enter our deals page.

Prices quoted in USD below unless otherwise stated.

Costa Rica Quick Facts

  • Sunrise and sunset is roughly the same all year round, with a difference of around 15 minutes. Sunrise is generally 6 AM with first light around 530 AM and sunset is 530 PM, dark by 6 PM.
  • Costa Rica uses 110 V and drives on the right hand side of the road.
  • Local currency is called the colón. Exchange rate ~520 CRC to 1 USD.
  • Spanish is the main language.
  • Costa Rica is 8-12 degrees from the equator.

Costa Rica in October Weather

In Costa Rica, there is a tropical dry season and rainy season along with over 25 micro-climates. October dominates as the rainiest month for many of those micro-climates. As mentioned earlier, the exception is the Caribbean coast, where October is actually a sunny month with less rainfall. If you can ONLY visit Costa Rica in October, we highly recommend to visit the Caribbean coast!

It is not super rare for October to have tropical storms, tropical waves and tropical depression. Costa Rica luckily does not experience many hurricanes but it is still a rare possibility in October and November.

The last hurricane was Hurricane Nate in early October 2017, which was one of the absolute worst hurricanes to hit Costa Rica. And even if the hurricane does not make direct landfall in Costa Rica, the country is still subject to heavy rainfall.

If you are super unlucky, you may just happen to come to Costa Rica during a tropical storm or depression in October. But, it may only last a day or two so it’s not a 24/7 rainy day all 31 days in October. You can still enjoy moments of sunshine and clear skies in October, but don’t count on it every single day.

Always expect rain, and be happy when it doesn’t! You could wake up to pouring rain, then it’ll clear up for a couple hours, and then begin pouring again in the evening. It could be super sunny, blue skies in the morning until about mid morning, then start storming until the next day. It could even drizzle the entire day with lightning storms at night.

Temperatures

Temperatures are the lowest in October, but it’s still hot. Average temperatures are around mid 80s° F for the coasts (29° C). It’s around low 70s° F (21° C) for the Central Valley cities. The highest elevation areas like Poas, Vara Blanca, San Gerardo de Dota and San Isidro de el General can go down to low 50s° F (10° C) at night, these are generally the coldest temperatures.

Below are short descriptions of the weather in August for popular tourist destinations in Costa Rica.

Guanacaste and Nicoya Peninsula

The Guanacaste coast and Nicoya Peninsula experience October as their rainiest month. These areas tend to be hit with the extremes – driest in dry season, wettest in rainy season. Well, it’s not the wettest place in Costa Rica, but these areas do get a lot of rain and are subject to strong tropical waves and storms. When it rains, it pours, even if it only lasts for 30 minutes.

The upside to visiting these places in October is that you will see them at their lushest and greenest. Come again in three months and they will look completely different, like a desert!

Average day time temperatures are approximately high 80s° F (32° C) and night temperatures hover around mid 70s° F (24° C). Also very humid which can make it feel a tad bit hotter.

On the occasion that there is a tropical storm with consecutive days of rain, it may be very foggy and even a bit “chilly” in the early mornings like low 70s° F or 21° C, which is “cold” for these places! In March, the hottest month, it gets up to 40° C (104° F) by 10 AM!

Costa Rica in October - Playa Flamingo. Photo is of a beach with stormy clouds, darkish beige sand and some houses on a peninsula in the background

Also try to get out in the mornings for the least possibilities of rain. You may still be able to get some epic rainy season sunsets too, especially if it starts raining earlier in the day, there’s a high chance it could let up for a lovely sunset.

Central Valley

The Central Valley cities: San Jose , Alajuela, Heredia and Cartago experience quite a drenched October. The GAM can even flood, but mostly due to poor infrastructure so when it’s storming, the rains will pool over into the streets. You will still get moments throughout the day where it’s dry but it’s better to expect it to rain in the afternoons and nights so you’re prepared.

Mornings can still be clear and sunny in the city, but if you go up to the higher elevation areas, don’t be surprised if it’s fairly foggy with light drizzles even in the morning.

Costa Rica in October - Poas Volcano National Park. Photo is of a road going into the forest, very foggy

As the Central Valley is higher in elevation (~1100 meters or 3600 feet), it can actually get much colder, like mid 50s° F (12° C) at night. During the day, it stays around low to mid 70s° F (21-23° C).

La Fortuna near Arenal Volcano can rain a lot in October. It can rain on and off through the day, it can rain all night, it can rain all morning. Whatever day you are in La Fortuna in October, just be prepared for rain to avoid setbacks.

Book your activities for mornings and early afternoons. Just expect it to storm in the late afternoons, evenings and nights so avoid activities like night walks. You can still have sunny mornings, though they may be short lived so set your alarm clock and wake up early!

ARenal Volcano in October. Photo is of a volcano covered on the top with clouds, in the foreground is a green rainforest

But don’t worry about the temperatures, it’ll still be hot and humid in La Fortuna. Average day time temperatures hover in the mid 80s° F (29° C) with average night time temperatures in mid 70s° F (24° C).

Jaco and Manuel Antonio (Central Pacific)

Jaco and Manuel Antonio enjoy a nice wet October as well, being the tropical rainforests of the Central Pacific. You can still get lucky and have sunny and dry moments throughout the day, it won’t rain every single day, despite the dark clouds rolling in in the afternoon. Beautiful sunsets are still a possibility, if it clears up at the right time.

You’ll still have relatively high temperatures, around mid 80s° F (29° C) and night time temperatures are around mid 70s° F (24° C). It’s very humid in these areas, so prepare to sweat a lot. Midday may feel a lot hotter than the thermometer says, due to the humidity.

Costa Ballena and Osa Peninsula

Dominical , Uvita and Ojochal and the Osa Peninsula experience some of the wettest Octobers. The Osa Peninsula tends to get the most rainfall, more than the South Pacific. Storms, downpours, lightning storms, thunder and showers are not rare there.

Caribbean Coast (Tortuguero, Limon and Puerto Viejo)

Of all the places to visit in Costa RIca during October, the Caribbean coast is your best shot at great weather. Puerto VIejo , Limon and Tortuguero all boast days of sunshine, with little rainfall throughout the entire month. Although more tourists are realizing that the Caribbean is where they should go in October, it’s still not as crowded as the high season months like December through April.

Average day time temperatures are in the high 80s° F (30-31° C) and average night time temperatures are around the low 70s° F (23° C).

Monteverde ‘s mountain and cloud forest weather looks a bit like the Central Valley weather but it gets much foggier up there at 1300+ meters (4360+ feet). The periods of dryness and sun may be shorter and more intermittent in Monteverde, it’s best to just prepare for fog. storms and rain.

The tropical cloud forests constantly have low level cloud cover, hence the name and why you should just expect rain in Monteverde. It may actually rain here every day in October, whether it’s a light drizzle, afternoon shower or all day downpour.

Average day time temperatures are around 70° F (21° C) during the day and around low to mid 60s° F (15-18° C) at night.

Prices in Costa Rica in October

October is the cheapest time to visit Costa Rica. If you’re on an extremely tight budget, then October will be the best time for you to come. Due to it being the lowest tourism month and the rainiest for most of the country, many prices in tourism drop drastically.

Hotels can be 40-50% of the price they are in January, February and March, excursions may offer 10% or more discounts, especially for groups and restaurants may offer 20% off when paying in cash.

You can also find really good last minute deals for hotels and surf camps. We’ve even seen buy one, get one free for surf camps. Or book 2 nights and get the third free for hotels.

Car rentals are at their lowest in October. A one week subcompact crossover 4wd automatic SUV is around $330 USD with basic and mandatory insurance. In high season like February, the same car for one week is around $750 USD!

Flights are also cheaper, as October is not a popular travel month in general. But again, the downside is availability as many routes aren’t serviced in October. Although flights may be cheaper, the itinerary may be more complicated if your origin airport is not major hub with a direct flight like LAX, ATL, DFW or IAH.

Crowds in Costa Rica in October

October, being the rainiest month for most of the country, will be at its emptiest although the Caribbean coast may see more people. You can perfectly find yourself sharing one of the most popular beaches in Costa Rica (Playa Manuel Antonio in Manuel Antonio National Park ) with a handful of people.

Photo is of a beach, with a rainforest covered inlet in the background, turquoise water. A couple is taking a selfie on the beach, another couple is swimming in the water

The Caribbean coast may be a bit busier since it has better weather but it’s not still nearly as crowded as the high season!

Trip Planning for Costa Rica in October

The best thing about visiting Costa Rica in October is that you won’t have to worry about hotels, national parks or attractions being sold out. If you want to “go with the flow” and not pre-book anything, you can definitely do that in October but just make sure to check if the place is open first.

The downside is availability, especially if you are a solo traveler. Although services will be cheaper, not all services will be available for one person as there is normally a minimum to operate a service.

Important Things to Know About Visiting Costa Rica in October

If you are driving, rent a 4×4 . Roads that only need a high clearance car in dry season, will be in their worst shape in October with more and bigger potholes. If it’s a dirt road and it has been raining a lot, it’ll become a muddy mess. Always stay on the main road – never take an off road detour.

Furthermore, DO NOT CROSS RIVERS. Rivers are at their peak in October and flash floods CAN and DO happen. Don’t try to be a big shot and show off. Be safe, be smart. Even if you have a 4×4, it is never worth the risk. Any type of water damage to your rental vehicle will never be covered by any type of insurance, even full insurance. Read more about renting a car in Costa Rica and get our Costa Rica car rental discount.

For long routes, plan for the morning. Do not drive long routes at night or overnight. This is when it tends to rain the hardest.

Some businesses (hotels, restaurants, shops) are not open in October. Many hotels take advantage of the lowest month to do construction.

Plan your activities for the morning and be aware that cancellations may occur.

Apply mosquito repellent profusely and cover up. Mosquitoes are at their peak in October, as they breed in stagnant water. Thanks to the poor infrastructure, streets get incredibly flooded so mosquitoes are at their worst.

Flight cancellations and delays are not uncommon in October. Download your airline’s app and check for updates regularly. I highly recommend purchasing travel insurance for October.

Have a good attitude and be flexible. If you can’t have a good attitude about rain, reschedule your trip. We get SO many emails from readers being disappointed about getting rained out for tours, not being able to see sunsets and having to drive in the rain…in October. They clearly didn’t do any research or didn’t take it seriously. If they did, they should have reschedule their trip to a less rainy month, to the dry season or went to the Caribbean side.

If this will be your first time in Costa Rica, it’s been your dream vacation for a long time and you will only visit Costa Rica once ever in your life, then reschedule your visit to the dry season. Or go to the Caribbean side!

Best Things to Do in Costa Rica in October

Remember, plan your outdoor activities for the morning.

There aren’t a ton of museums in Costa Rica, they are mostly in San Jose. So if you’re in the city during a storm or a heavy rainfall, head to a museum or two. These museums are not huge, so you can visit a couple places in one day.

The Jade Museum and Museum of Gold are very interesting to learn about the culture, history and traditions of Costa Rica. The National Theater is the country’s cultural gem and the National Museum displays rotating exhibits for Costa Rican artists and important moments in history.

The Central Market is also an excellent place to find cover and taste some yummy local dishes.

Cooking Class

Most cooking classes are under roof so you can still whip up some tasty Costa Rican food . We did a farm to table cooking class in La Fortuna . The first 30 minutes was touring the local farm and picking the ingredients to use for our cooking. Then the next couple hours were under roof, cooking up our own culinary storm while the real storm was going on outside.

Hot Springs

Hot springs in the rain is awesome. Just make sure to get out fast if there is a lot of close lightning. I love hot springs, Yeison doesn’t but in October when it’s pouring rain, he will hop right in there!

Read about the best La Fortuna hot springs in our link. Other hot spring facilities are in Guanacaste like Las Hornillas, Buena Vista, Borinquen, Rio Perdido, Vandara (one of our favorites) , Hacienda Guachipelin and over in the Central Valley at Hacienda Orosi.

Morning Beach Walks

Since it tends to start raining in the afternoons, get your beach time early in the mornings when it has the best chances to be dry and sunny. The sun is up by 530 AM, so set your alarm clock and get your steps in.

Caribbean Activities

If you’re going to visit Tortuguero , then the must do activities are a boat ride or kayaking through the national park canals and a turtle nesting tour. You also have great chances to see baby turtles hatching and crawling out to see in the early mornings and evenings.

In Puerto Viejo , you can visit a bunch of gorgeous beaches, ride your bike throughout town, hike Cahuita National Park , visit Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge to see animals, kayak down the Punta Uva River, take a chocolate or banana tour, take a surf lesson at Playa Cocles or simply relax.

October 12 is the Dia de las Culturas (Cultural Day).

Does Costa Rica celebrate Halloween? No, not really. But it’s been catching on the last few years. You can find more Halloween activities where there are a lot of American expats and immigrants, like Tamarindo, Samara , Playas del Coco , Manuel Antonio and Jaco . In San Jose, some bars and clubs put on Halloween parties and raves.

Tours We Don’t Recommend in October

Many tour operators will not run certain tours in October. These are excursions like sunset snorkeling, sunset sailing, catamaran tours, night walks, afternoon volcano hikes and afternoon horseback riding. If you book excursions in the afternoon, be aware that the weather may force cancellations.

Some other activities are waterfall hikes, such as La Leona waterfall hike as that area can get a lot of rain. If it’s storming, they won’t open it due to safety. Some waterfalls that have better infrastructure will stay open, but they may be a very murky, dirty brown due to all the run off. Swimming in the waterfall is a no no. One of these waterfalls is La Fortuna waterfall , pictured below.

costa rica in october la fortuna waterfall. Photo is of some rocks in the foreground, and a waterfall with a brown colored pool

If there is a real tropical storm or depression, any activity is subject to cancellation. Always always always be in communication with your provider or tour agency to get updates.

What to Pack for Your October Trip to Costa Rica

Essentials: Valid original passport, valid original drivers license if you plan to rent a car , credit card with no foreign transaction fee, travel insurance and medicines.

An absolute MUST bring: a waterproof shell or jacket.

Your rainy season packing list will be: waterproof backpack or rain cover, hat or visor, light weight poncho, dry bags, micro fiber towel, mosquito repellent, sunscreen, after bite cream. Don’t leave your hotel room without your rain jacket or travel umbrella in your bag!

As for clothes, for the rainforest and coast, light weight clothes that dry fast. These will be a life saver due to the high humidity. If you’re visiting high elevation mountain areas, bring a warm sweater, jacket and long pants.

We highly recommend a pair of waterproof trail running shoes due to muddier trails. For light water activities like snorkeling, tubing, white water rafting, waterfall rappelling, closed toed adventure sandals like KEEN are great.
