BVI Yachting Season

A good destination year-around except for hurricane season which runs from June to end of November. High season for a BVI yacht charter is from mid-December to the end of April.

The Virgin Islands are in a state of constant summer, with ideal weather and temperatures all year long. With very little change in seasons, you can rent a yacht in the islands virtually year-round and still expect sunshine, warm temperatures, and cooling breezes.

• Summer (June to November): It’s hot with an average temperature around 89ºF and the sea is around 82ºF. It can be humid with unstable weather as it’s tropical storm/hurricane season. Winds are southeasterly between 10 and 20 knots.

• Winter (December to May): You’ll find daily average temperature around 86ºF, but it’s cooler at night around 68ºF. The seas are warm around 78ºF and the weather is stable. Winds are easterly and northeasterly between 15 and 25 knots.

BVI Crewed Motor Yacht Charters

Motor yachts are the most popular choice for BVI boat charters, and there is an extensive selection of motor yachts for hire, from tri-deck superyachts, to smaller pilothouse motor yachts.

Motor yachts offer several advantages over sailing yachts. Speed is a key benefit; since you aren’t relying on wind, you can typically access more stops during your trip. Vendors line the beach selling arts and crafts, local restaurants offer spectacular buffets and BBQs, and partygoers enjoy live shows and live calypso music. Then, at midnight when the party’s in full swing, a giant fireball is lit in Trellis Bay.

How much does it cost to charter a yacht in the British Virgin Islands?

Many factors affect charter rates in the BVI, including the type of vessel, the number of guests, and the time of year you plan to visit.

In general, the majority of sailing yachts in the BVI use all-inclusive rates ; sailing yachts typically range from $20,000 to $40,000 per week. Motor yachts, on the other hand, use “plus expenses” rates. This means guests pay a weekly rate – which starts at roughly $40,000 – as well as any expenses, including fuel, dockage costs, taxes and other expenses.

One of the most significant factors affecting charter rates is the season. New Year’s and Christmas are prime charter seasons in the BVI, and as such, guests can expect to see a 10-15% premium in costs.

Do charters start in St Thomas or Tortola?

St. Thomas (U.S.) is just 15 nautical miles from Tortola, which makes St. Thomas a popular launching point for BVI yacht charters. Depending on which yacht you charter, your vacation may launch from St. Thomas or Tortola. Consult with your broker to learn more about where your preferred yacht is located. Ultimately, St. Thomas and nearby St. John are ideal stops on a BVI yacht charter. Both islands offer their own unique sights and attractions, and many BVI charters will stop at one or both of these U.S. islands.

What day of the week can I start my charter?

You can start your charter on any day of the week. Your charter itinerary is personalized to your needs, and can be adjusted to whichever day is most convenient to you.

Are cruising taxes included in the charter fee?

It depends. Some boats include cruising taxes in their rates, while others add these fees on. Your charter broker will help you understand the exact fee structure before your charter begins.

In the British Virgin Islands, cruising taxes are charged to charter yachts, which includes a $50 flat fee, as well as a $16 fee charged per day per guest. This includes the National Park fee, as well as Virgin Island Search and Rescue (VISAR) contributions.

There is simply that much to discover, and adding both the BVI and the USVI to one itinerary can become quite overwhelming.

Think of it like this: Do you want to spend your time exploring the islands or sailing between them?

Furthermore, sticking to one island group will significantly simplify your yacht selection, as you do not have to worry about the hassles of crossing country borders in your yacht.

Charter yachts need special permits to cruise between both island groups, and not every yacht has  the right paperwork .

It is important to consider that, depending on the weather, it can take up to 4 hours to sail between St. Thomas and Tortola.

In addition, the yacht, crew, and guests have to undergo immigration procedures upon arrival , which can also take some time.

Best Destinations for a Yacht Vacation in the British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) are a prime sailing destination, typically starting from Tortola, the largest island, where many charters are based.

From there, you can explore east to Virgin Gorda, famous for The Baths National Park, a natural wonder of seaside boulders and pools.

North Sound, close by, offers luxurious resorts and watersports.

The Sir Francis Drake Channel acts as a marine highway with calm waters, leading to lively spots like Norman Island and Jost Van Dyke, home to the famous beach bars of White Bay .

To the south of the channel, smaller islands like Cooper Island, Salt Island , and Peter Island are charming, quieter destinations with excellent snorkeling and cozy beach bars.

Virgin Gorda is the third largest island in the British Virgin Islands, with just over 4,000 people.

It’s known for its beautiful white sands, the rock pools known as The Baths National Park , and world-class luxury resorts and clubs for BVI yacht charters.

There are also some great hiking trails on Virgin Gorda with sweeping views of the island’s coastline-making it an ideal destination for visitors with  bareboat catamarans .

After soaking up the sunshine and saltwater activities in Virgin Gorda, consider visiting the Copper Mine National Park . These 19th-century abandoned ruins are found between Copper Mine Bay and Crooks Bay on the island’s southeastern point. The structures were built by Cornish miners and housed around 130 families before the mine was closed in 1862.

Jost Van Dyke

Jost Van Dyke, one of the smallest leeward islands, is renowned for its exceptional scuba diving , thanks to its vibrant marine life, making it a top destination for snorkeling and water sports enthusiasts.

But what really makes Jost Van Dyke stand out as a charter destination is its super great vibe and positive energy around White Bay and Great Harbour.

Don’t miss a visit to the Great Harbour Bars of Foxy’s and Ivan’s for a drink, the peaceful energy of Diamond Cay , and the crashing waves of Bubbly Pool .

Swim from your boat to the famous Soggy Dollar bar for a painkiller. Hang out in the hammock in Hendo’s Hideout, get a roti or seafood, and relax on the beach. Weekends are more party-like, with day trips from USVI filling the beach bars.

Tortola Island

Tortola is the largest island in the British Virgin Islands. It’s home to some of the best diving and snorkeling in the Caribbean- especially in Cane Garden Bay . Tortola Island also has many historical sites and points of interest.

Don’t miss a visit to Smuggler’s Cove , a perfect shallow reef ideal for scuba beginners and untouched by civilization.

The history of Norman Island is tied to pirates and legends tell that Norman Island was a place where they hid their treasures. Some say that Treasure Island , the famed novel by Robert Louis Stevenson, is based on the history of Norman Island.

The island has several bays and dive sites worth getting acquainted with, including Benures Bay and The Bight . You can also partake in an evening of drinking at the legendary floating bar of Willy T .

This tiny island is arguably one of the most pristine places in the world, and it makes sense why it has become synonymous with white sand beaches.

Loblolly Beach , Bay Beach , and Cow Wreck Beach are not to be missed in BVI yacht charters.

Price Category by Yacht Type:

• Smaller sailboats: you can find low-cost crewed charters between 10k-20k
• Smaller Catamarans: You are still able to charter a small catamaran for 12,5k. You can especially find many good deals during the off-season.
• Larger Luxury Catamarans: Priced between 70k and 100k , these prime catamarans are equal to motor yachts in terms of space and luxury.
• Motor yachts: You can find a small motor yacht with 3-4 cabins for 20k-50k
• High-end motor yachts: these are the epitome of luxury and often include amenities not found on other yachts, such as spa rooms, gyms, larger jacuzzis, and the whole collection of water toys, the price range is hard to pinpoint here, but starts somewhere around 60k and rises to over 700k.

An APA yacht charter in the British Virgin Islands is popular for clients seeking a customized, high-end experience . In this charter arrangement, the client pays a base fee for the yacht rental and crew.

On top of this base fee, an advance provisioning allowance (APA) is added, typically around 20-30% of the yacht’s base rental cost.

This APA is intended to cover expenses such as food, beverages, fuel, marina fees, and any other costs that might arise during the charter.

How do i get to my bvi yacht charter.

• British Virgin Islands: Lettsome International Airport – on Beef Island
• United States Virgin Islands: Cyril E. King Airport – in St. Thomas

These are the two international airports in the Virgin Islands.

Regardless of whether you are going to charter in the BVI or ISVI, you will find better flight connections to St. Thomas .

The airport in the BVI is small, and there are fewer flights on smaller planes.

On the other hand, the airport in St. Thomas has regular connections from many major US Cities such as Miami, Fort Lauderdale, New York, Atlanta, and more.

My Charter Starts in the BVI, but I am Flying into the USVI?

Most people arrive on the 16.15 flight in St. Thomas, and the last ferry to the BVI has already left, so you need to spend the night .

The next day, you can either take the public ferry,  which makes multiple trips daily between St. Thomas and Tortola, or we can arrange a private taxi transfer directly to your yacht.

Once you have arrived at your yacht you will meet your crew and get settled in. Your charter begins at 12 p.m./noon .

When is the Best Time for a Yacht Charter in the British Virgin Islands?

The main charter season in the British Virgin Islands spans from December to March , with a peak around Christmas/New Year.

Make sure to book your BVI yacht charter well in advance. Ideally, you would inquire about your coming charter 12 months in advance .

WHY? The best charter yachts are often fully booked long in advance, and it’s not unusual to see popular dates booked  2 summers ahead  for a BVI yacht charter. Inquiring less than 6 months ahead often means that your first choice is unavailable for charter.

Yacht description.

G3 is a 2022 51ft catamaran with four queen cabins, each with a private ensuite bathroom with electric toilet, wash basin and separate shower stall. Spacious master stateroom has desk space, separate toilet and walk-in shower. All cabins have air conditioning, 110v outlets and dimmable recessed lighting.

The salon is really light with great headroom and contemporary furnishings. There is a comfortable seating area which is perfect for relaxing with a book or watching the big TV – the boat has a huge library of  movies. This area flows seamlessly through to the back deck which offers alfresco dining. Upstairs is the sky lounge which has sunbeds and sofas offering a fantastic 360-degree view.  There is also a front deck lounge area which has adjustable reclining seating and lots of area on the trampolines, and a fantastic sound system so you can have music everywhere.

Our personal opinion

Why book G3– SPACE – This boat has an enormous amount of space for a 51ft boat.  Every nook and cranny has been optimised with guests comfort in mind. There are great communal areas but also spaces where you can have a nap without being disturbed! Added to this is the fantastic crew who go above and beyond for their guests – charter of a lifetime, box ticked!

They are a wonderful team, hosts, guides, companions, and crew. They exceeded all expectations, always having our safety, interest, and enjoyment at the forefront of their time and effort. Their efforts started well before our charter, with outlining expectations and understanding our wants and preferences. Rendezvous diving

If your crewed charter yacht does not offer onboard diving then fear not, rendezvous diving can be arranged.

So what is Rendezvous diving?

A local dive company will pick you up direct from your charter yacht at a pre-determined location and take you for a one- or two-tank dive to experience the BVI below the water. This is an excellent option if only a couple of guests wish to dive or can work equally as well if all your group are interested. If your charter yacht offers minimal onboard diving, then rendezvous diving can also work if you wanted to add a few more dives during your charter.

Spread across the northeastern Caribbean, the Virgin Islands are a kaleidoscope of aquamarine waters, sun-soaked harbours, and pristine white sandy beaches, which are the perfect place to relax while on vacation. The Virgin Islands are also quite hilly, which provides opportunities for scenic hikes and climbs.

The beautiful weather also allows for a variety of nautical activities, such as scuba diving and snorkeling. These are an excellent opportunity to see snorkeling spots in stunning Virgin Islands underwater wildlife.

There is so much to do you won't want to leave. Relax and take in the spectacular scenery; sample the French-Caribbean fusion cuisine; and explore the little villages scattered along the shores of the Sir Francis Drake Channel.

Head for the impressive rock formations of The Baths on Virgin Gorda to see immense boulders, caverns, and natural pools, or let your imagination loose with stories of pirates and treasure grottos on Norman Island, the model for 'Treasure Island'. See sunken shipwrecks and a spectacular range of tropical sea life while diving Anegada, the BVI's unique coral atoll.

White-sand beaches, lush green mountains, and sheltered, yacht-filled harbors identify the island of Tortola, the British Virgins Island's largest and capital island. The past of the West Indies and the present-day BVI combine and mingle with ruins existing alongside the luxury resorts that draw visitors from all around the world.

Charter Yacht Society BVI

The Charter Yacht Society (CYS) is a non-profit organization founded in 1982 by independent owners of crewed yachts in the BVI. It is the only BVI government recognized body within the crewed charter industry. By crews for crews, the society represents the organized voice of individual yacht operators. The CYS advocates, educates and promotes.

The members of the Charter Yacht Society of the British Virgin Island provide private cruising vacations to guests from around the world. Its member crews are from a wide variety of backgrounds, both professionally and culturally.
