Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Some had fractional rigs. A BMW diesel was offered as an option. Thanks to the designer for providing corrections. Last 40 boats built by Fletcher Sportsboats Ltd.

I don't know much more than that the Evolution was designed as a quarter ton (IIRC) racer/cruiser. I think only a few were built. One, "Absolution", was mis-rated (measurer's mistake) and dominated Solent racing about '81, winning against the flat-out racing quarters. She actually performed quite well even when allowing for the incorrect rating IIRC. If you have access to a library of Seahorse mags back to about '81 you'll find a season summary from Absolution's skipper in the "Coastal round up" they did each year. There was also a report in Seahorse about the measurement error and that may have some comments about the boat, from memory. EDIT; I happened to find my old Seahorse binders. Absolution won Solent Points in her class for two years, so both '80 and '81 Seahorses had reports (about 600+ words) from the skipper. He had some quite detailed info about sheeting angles, sail selection etc BUT (big "but") apparently Absolution was modified from the standard masthead rig to a fractional rig and therefore all that stuff would be of little use to you. If yours is a fractional, post and I may be able to copy out some of his info.
mine is a mast head rig and it weighs just over 2 ton

I have owned an Evolution 26 ("GrumpyGorilla" ) for 10years and race it on the Solent, normally Thursday evening racing around the cans at Royal Lymington Yacht Club. They were originally built at Christchurch (5 miles away) . We have 2 fractional rig 26's ( including "Absolution") ,2 masthead 26's and 1 fractional Evolution 25. The 25 has the same hull as the 26 but a different coachroof allowing more headroom down below. There were various combinations of rigs ,normal masthead, fractional ,whereby the mast was moved 8inches forward of the original step , and an odd-ball fractional rig that was 30inches taller than the standard fractional rig. Apparently , this was popular in places like Poole harbour ,where quite a number of them can be found, where the wind is more "flukey" because of the number is islands. "Absolution" still outstrips any of the other Evolutions and often bigger boats in other classes. I think it was 2000 when she came 18th overall in the "Round the Island Race", not bad out of 1800 boats racing. Christchurch has a larger fleet, as does Poole, and they often have match racing against each other. We are trying to get Lymington involved in this as well. Normally, the fractional rigs go better upwind but the masthead, with bigger spinnakers, reverse the trend downwind. I have got the original Sales "blurb" and will copy it for you. Also Practical Boat Owner did a report November 1981 P55 by Rodger Witt ( you can buy copies from PBO for £3.50) - Interesting reading. Anything specific you need to know , I'll try and answer. regards

ive seen the pbo report. ours is goes well up wind and point very well. we are not used to masthead rigging and our looking to find out about setting the rigging in terms of rake in the mast. is there any way you could put me in touch with an owner of a masthead 26 thanks

MAR.CO R-Evolution 26: agile, high-performance, elegant and…exciting!

  • Alessio Molla

MAR-CO-R-EVOLUTION-26-test

Conceived as the utmost expression of design aimed at achieving great cruising performance, with comfort on board never being forgotten, this boat gives amazing driving sensations and plenty of space for all your recreational activities.

Design is elegant and modern. This is immediately apparent from the quality of the sofa finishes, the wide rear decks and the black T-Top.

Every corner hides a surprise, a space, a chrome, a story, which for Mar.Co began in 1974. In 8 metres of length the Mar.Co R-Evolution 26 has encapsulated the best of its experience in the field, enhanced in this case by the power of a Mercury 450R that made my test even more exciting: let’s see why.

Mar.Co R-Evolution 26 Sea Trial

I approach the test of the new R-evolution 26 with a certain amount of expectation since I have been waiting since 2021 to test it. So I enjoy every single step that leads me to the helm station. I immediately notice that there are no narrow passages and there is a comfortable seat waiting for me that makes me feel at ease straight away, being able to choose whether to stand or just sit. However, it is enough to turn on the Mercury 450R that I have behind me that the delightful little noise made by that R immediately makes me realize that I am going to have a lot of fun on this test.

For me, the fun is just discovering it slowly. At very low revs the boat responds perfectly to my every command, making getting out of the harbour, and then in, a piece of cake. As always, I test it by slowly revving up, also to get a feel for consumption.

MAR-CO-R-EVOLUTION-26-aerial-view

At about 2,000 rpm the boat gets up on plane, the power of the engine is tangible, the wake comes off and we start to feel the performance of the fibreglass hull that makes it glide absolutely nimbly over the water.

At 3,500 rpm if I were with my family enjoying a quiet day at sea I could already find peace of mind: 23 knots, ideal for cruising and keeping consumption under control, only 43.5 litres per hour in total.

MAR-CO-R-EVOLUTION-26-aerial-view-right

I want more. If there is one thing I like to do, it is test the acceleration. The result is surprising: in minus 2.5 seconds I am at 20 knots. Spectacular.

While I’m at it, and now that I feel at one with the Mar.Co R-Evolution 26, I attack with a series of turns and counter-turns, catching my waves and looking for those of the others: we’re at the Genoa Boat Show so it’s very simple, but despite this its clean movement in the water is surprising, and even more so the stability it shows under stress.

There is little more to add: agile, performing, elegant but above all too much fun. The hardest thing about this test was leaving it in the port.

The Mar.Co R-Evolution 26 in detail

bow-view

At 8.02 metres long and 3.08 metres wide, the dominant colours of the Mar.Co R-Evolution 26 are white and red, interrupted only by a carbon black stripe on the two tubulars leading to the fibreglass bowplate integrated in the mould. The Mercury 450R also fits in nicely, white and red too, a touch of sporty style.

At the centre of the helm station in this model is a beautiful T-Top, which, however, is not standard, but this one does have it and I fully understand the choice: built in fibreglass it is reminiscent of the one on the R-Evolution 35, with two carefully designed storage compartments and a modern-style helm station that matches the T-shaped seat and the very elegant white footrest: everything is absolutely sporty.

The construction quality of this boat designed by Federico Gerna is first-class, and it can be seen in every detail: from the handrails, to the wide rear decks with their modern touch, to the retractable ladder with handles for easier ascent. Everything is studied down to the smallest detail.

Even the spaces impress me. As many as 14 people can stay here because everything is designed to be practical and efficient. On the transom there is room for an outboard up to 450 hp, like the one we use today. The stern platforms are wide, and under the one on the right there’s a locker ideal for putting fins and mask in.

stern

The style of the Mar.Co production can be seen throughout the boat: it is elegant, carefully crafted, its lines and design stand out, that’s for sure.

But it is when you enjoy its sporty performance, aggressive just enough, that the adrenalin level in your bloodstream rises: and for me, in the end, that is what counts.

Performance on all points of sailing is excellent. Reef early to limit healing and maintain control, speed and direction. She is a very rewarding and responsive boat to sail. With a fully lifting keel she'll sit upright on the sand for great creek crawling or beach visits. Lovely big cockpit with removable mainsheet. Kebony deck panels line the cockpit to provide a safe, attractive and warm feel. New headlinings have been installed throughout. There are 3 x Genoas, 2 x main sails, cruising chute and storm jib (never used). She performs very well with a quiet outboard with easy motor sailing on both tacks due to the ultra-long shaft.

Broker's Comments

The Evolution 26 is a modern, light weight, lifting keeler that will appeal to the yachtsman or ex-dinghy racer who desires more than the rather plodding performance of your average shoal draught bilge keeler. She is a yacht that could take you quickly and safely across the channel (English, Bristol or St George's) yet still with the useful ability to take the ground in any one of our myriad and picturesque drying harbours. Exploring the National Park Coast or the deserted creeks of the 'Secret Waterway' with a young family is just one of the possibilities for this versatile craft. She is in generally good order and reasonably priced but her owner will consider an offer.

Evolution 25

  • August 5, 2009

This is the cruising version of the Julian Everitt-designed Evolution 26 quarter-tonner, from the early 1980s. With her hydraulically operated, 800lb (364kg) lifting keel and powerful fractional rig, she has plenty of performance and handles like a big dinghy. The Evolution 25’s coachroof is higher than her racing sister’s and the accommodation is more spacious and better fitted out. She can sleep five, has a separate heads compartment and a practical galley area. She draws just a foot (31cm) with the keel up, so she is a flexible coastal and estuary cruiser. Build quality was not brilliant and many were home completed, so the arrangements below decks and the quality of fit-out will vary.

evolution 26 yacht

Hi And welcome to my auction of a evolution 26 which is a 26 foot sailing yacht.. I really cant say a great deal about it as it was left to me by a family member.I know it’s called Aquila and it’s currently dry stalled at a Marina in Cardiff wales. I have full intittlement, log books and receipts for original bill of sale and documents dating back to 1983. It’s fair to say it’s has quite a comprehensive service record and has been looked after. I do believe the sails are in good shape and all working, Including the engine receipt that was just under £3000. Believe the engine has only done 26 hrs.

It’s a 5/6 berth, full cooker and shower / bathroom. I have no idea off it’s value? I live 90 miles roughly from where it is stored so notice will be needed if you would like to view. Aquila does not come with a trailer. Thanks for looking.
