A High School teacher friend sent me an email saying that her colleague had a sailboat to give away. A photo was included. It is mid-October, 2010. I was 72 years old and had 8 sailboats in the yard; 7 of them project boats. My wife just looked at me and said "no way!" But when I said I at least wanted to look at the boat, she resigned herself to fate. The owner said it was 20 feet long, but he didn't know what kind of boat he had. It had been sitting on its trailer for over 11 years and was very dirty. The hull was solid and there was a main sail, but no jib in the garage. The title gave a HIN of "LAY10 011MG 7418". That gave me the year, 1974, and a length of 18 feet, but I was otherwise clueless. Under "Model" were the letters "WIN" and nothing more. I agreed to take the boat and began a web search. The Coast Guard website http://www.uscgboating.org/ said that it was manufactured by Laguna Yachts of California. Armed with that information, I soon found that it was a Laguna Windrose 18. I still can't find out how many were built or how many are still in use, but there is a Laguna user forum and they seem to have a very good reputation. My boat was one of the earliest Lagunas. Coastal Recreation and Aquarius were subsidiaries of Laguna. Coastal Recreation built the respected Balboa line, which also included a Windrose 18 that looks just like mine. Some of the laguna models were later built by Classic Yachts of Canaute, Kansas. I always pictured Kansas as endless fields of grain, but discovered that the state has 24 primary reservoirs that range in size from 1,200 acres to a whopping 16,000 acres! Lofland SailCraft, which made the Picnic and other boats was also located in Kansas. The Laguna Windrose looked a lot better after getting a much needed power wash! I really like the sleek lines and roomy cabin. The hull is solid and it has a 400 lb cast iron swing keel! The folding outboard holder, lights and stainless rigging are all there and in good condition. The trailer needs to be wire brushed and painted, but has only surface rust. with paint or fresh wall coverings, the interior will be quite inviting the laguna windrose has a complete set of interior cushions in excellent condition. i made a new hatch cover. i got a mainsail with the boat but the former owner never found the jib. i bought this nice colorful set of sails for it. the rudder blade was beat up, so i made a new one and refinished the rudder head and tiller., my pretty laguna windrose is sold here are the "good bye" photos., check out this laguna windrose rowboat. Someone decided that the well-designed and sturdy Laguna Windrose 18 sailboat would make a seaworthy and inexpensive offshore rower. Modifications to the boat included lowering the cockpit cowling and installing oarlocks, replacing the companionway (entrance) with a sealing hatch, fiberglassing all deck hatches permanently shut and reinforcing the front ventilation hatch to prevent leakage. Total cost of the modifications to make the boat seaworthy and ready for rowing was just over $1000. The boat was used to cross the Bering Sea, and the vessel performed very well. Ballast is in the form of a 400 lb cast-iron swing-pivot keel. Interior space is enormous compared to a conventional offshore rowboat. Storage hatches accessed inside the vessel can carry enough supplies to last a year. The pictured rowboat contains three bicycles, five months freeze-dried provisions for three people, three sets of skiing gear, winter camping gear for Siberia and a whole lot more. In total it is carrying almost two tons of cargo. It is the same length as a mid-sized sea kayak and travels at about the same speed in calm conditions fully loaded. (I found details about the passage on this website: http://www.angusadventures.com/beringstrait.html . One of the adventurers shares my younger brother's name, Tim Harvey!)WINDROSE 18 Detailed ReviewIf you are a boat enthusiast looking to get more information on specs, built, make, etc. of different boats, then here is a complete review of WINDROSE 18. Anyway, it's a 1975 Laguna Windrose 18. Needs some TLC and we should be good. First question, is there anyone out there familiar and knowledgeable with these ? Also, I was wondering if these came with some type of or top from the factory? The has a number of snaps from near the slide back on both sides of the with a twist fastener at the end roughly half way back the length of the . Beyond that there are half-moon brackets screwed to the boat where maybe the adjuster strap from a would clip to? Aftermarket? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, CM | | | 17-04-2019, 20:15 | | Boat: Laguna Windrose 18 | this summer. Not much info about this boat on the web, would be interested to know what projects you have, have you sailed the boat yet? Regarding your question: my boat has a little cover that snaps around and going down along hatchdoor. Since hatch door is unsealed, I believe it is to help to prevent rain to get inside the boat. Anyway, would love to share any info/experience with Windrose...and by the way, I am new to sailing as well... | | | 18-04-2019, 03:48 | | Boat: (Cruiser Living On Dirt) | | | | Thread Tools | | Rate This Thread | : | Posting Rules | post new threads post replies post attachments edit your posts is are code is are are are | Similar Threads | Thread | Thread Starter | Forum | Replies | Last Post | | Dave Custer | Construction, Maintenance & Refit | 18 | 16-12-2022 20:21 | | chuckdenicolo | Meets & Greets | 2 | 30-09-2013 11:41 | | blparrot | Monohull Sailboats | 2 | 02-09-2013 10:12 | | krowbar | Monohull Sailboats | 1 | 13-08-2011 07:19 | | ferrarsf | Atlantic & the Caribbean | 14 | 09-06-2009 17:31 | Privacy Guaranteed - your email is never shared with anyone, opt out any time. - Most Popular Categories

Laguna Madre 18 by bateau build ?Love the pic Did you check on the Bateau forums? There were a few built there I thought. I'm finishing an FS17, if I had to do it over I'd go with one of Chris Morejohn's designs. Hey FireCat why do you say that ? Price ? design ? difficulty ? etc ? thanks for your input Dave Price, longevity, resale, design superiority.... Stitch and glue has pluses and minuses. Core - it used to be the foam core was super expensive and marine ply was cheap by comparison. That is no longer the case. Good BS1088 okoume will run you $100+ a sheet, but you can now get carbon core PE for $60 a sheet. You need less sheets of foam since strip building produces less waste since you aren't cutting out as many predetermined shapes. Price - they will run near the same for the basic hull in the end. With stitch and glue plywood you'll need more core material due to waste, but less glass and resin. Foam core needs less core, but more glass and resin. In the end they won't be far off each other. Difficulty - they both have challenges. With plywood you are forcing it into a shape it will resist, and it can distort. With foam you need more frames, and they need to be set up well or they can distort the shape. With a little patience both can be worked out fairly easily. Design - there's a big divide here. The stitch and glue method is great for a basic hull, but the foam on frame designs can create any shape they want. So there are no limits and the hull can be made to function better. At least that's how I see it right now. Firecat thanks for your input, very thoughtful, you are probably right Top Contributors this MonthGreat choice! Riddle Field to stay lit later for Laguna Beach Little League, which has seen a big surge in playersPlay ball was the message at Laguna Beach City Hall last week, as the City Council voted unanimously to extend the lighted hours for Riddle Field. The field, located in the Boat Canyon neighborhood of north Laguna Beach, is home to Laguna Beach Little League and the city’s recreational adult softball program. Representatives of Laguna Beach Little League lobbied for the lights to stay on longer after experiencing a surge in participation. City officials said the league had more than 115 registered players for the fall season in 2023, marking its most in the past decade. The increased interest led to the formation of three additional teams. Riddle Field will remain lit until 9:30 p.m. from September to November and from February to July. The lights will not come on during Saturdays in the fall, nor Sundays in the spring and summer. The council moved forward with the new hours requested by Laguna Beach Little League on a one-year trial basis. It marks a significant improvement in field access, as previously the lights were utilized only on Wednesdays until 8 p.m. during the fall season. The field was illuminated until 9:30 p.m. on weekdays for spring and summer ball. Field maintenance and improvements take place during December and January, when the field is closed. “I think it’s very exciting that we have a problem where we need more space for Little League because there’s so much enrollment,” Mayor Pro Tem Alex Rounaghi said. “I think that’s such a good problem for us to have as a community. “I think that as leaders of the city, our first obligation is to the children of our community. … I think that’s just so important, and Little League is something that creates a real community space. I didn’t play baseball, but I remember the snack bar and all that. It’s a community space, and I think it’s Laguna at its best.” BJ Donovan, a Laguna Beach Little League board member, addressed the City Council during the Aug. 13 meeting and pointed out that men’s softball had greater permitting use in the fall than Little League. “As a league, our registration numbers have increased dramatically, as well as the desire to play more competitive baseball locally,” Donovan said. “Simply put, our goal as a Little League is to allow as many children to play baseball as possible.” In a letter submitted ahead of the meeting, Laguna Beach Little League President Brad Downey said the additional hours of light usage would provide players with an additional game per week, plus four additional practice slots in the fall due to limited daylight hours. Riddle Field has been part of the Laguna Beach community since 1962. A handful of field lighting projects there have taken place over time, most recently the installation of LED lighting in 2019. A staff report noted that the shift to LED lighting was motivated, in part, by the ability to minimize glare for neighboring homes and reduce operating costs. The City Council urged the Little League to be good neighbors in being granted additional use of the field. The lights may only be used for official team practices and games, and coaches will be required to turn off the lights as they exit the field. City officials added that a remote timer has been installed that turns off the lights according to schedule. “I just encourage the league to be efficient with the scheduling and use of time, so that it’s not like, ‘Oh, we’ve got until 9:30, so let’s just stretch it out,’” Councilman Bob Whalen said. “If there’s ways to be efficient, … we have had other issues with neighbors in close proximity to recreation activities.” All the latest on Orange County from Orange County. A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.

The Laguna 18 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel. The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.69 - 0.79 meter (2.26 - 2.56 ft) dependent on the load.

In his 2010 book, The Sailor's Book of Small Cruising Sailboats, author Steve Henkel praised Laguna Yacht's Windrose 18 in particular as "a showpiece" of Shad Turner's California sailboat design aesthetic, that emphasized "avante garde" modernist styling, something that was not seen on east coast boats ...
