Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

leopard 44 sailboatdata

South African catamaran builder Robertson and Caine and veteran multihull designers Morrelli & Melvin teamed up once again to produce the new Leopard 44, which is also available for charter as the Sunsail 444. The builder’s longtime role as the supplier of catamarans to both Sunsail and The Moorings means that the build team has extensive owner and charterer feedback when it comes time to launch a new model. The result has been cats that are easy and fun to sail, ruggedly built to avoid downtime when in charter, and relatively affordable ( view the complete photo gallery here ).

In those respects, the new 44-footer should fit right into the fleet. The most distinguishing feature on this catamaran is the cabin top that extends forward, past the saloon, to shade a forward-facing cockpit located just aft of the trampoline on the bow. While we were motoring north from Miami to Fort Lauderdale one evening last winter after the boat show, this cockpit was the place to be as the sun set. The view was tremendous and the breeze refreshing as we skipped along with a crowd aboard at a little better than 6 knots at 2,600 rpm. Throttling up to 3,200 rpm, we added another half a knot. Two 29-horsepower Yanmar diesels are mounted facing backward, well aft in each hull, with saildrives forward of them; under way, this reduces noise levels in the aft cabins.

Earlier, with the boat under sail, I’d found it simple to maneuver, with all controls, including the halyards, leading back to winches at the raised helm to starboard. There, the skipper sits just about at bimini level under a hard dodger; an overhead port provides a view of the main. In 13 knots of breeze and open-water waves, we made 6.5 knots while sailing closehauled, tacking through about 110 degrees.

A Sunsail representative quipped that the boat was designed with the Caribbean and its steady easterly trades in mind. One can enjoy sunrise and breakfast around a small table in the forward cockpit, leave the watertight door open as a steady breeze blows through the saloon all day, and then enjoy sunset in the large shaded cockpit astern, with dinner around a table that should seat eight with ease.

Access from the dinghy or when swimming has been simplified via transom platforms that extend slightly past the side hulls, conveniently located handrails, and just a single step leading to the bridgedeck. Once you’re aboard, wide decks make for easy movement fore and aft, and the bimini’s overhangs provide sure handholds.

leopard 44 sailboatdata

The boat I tested was a private owner’s version, with the accommodations for the captain and mate taking up the entire starboard hull. A queen berth is aft, with a sitting area amidships and a head with separate shower in the bow, behind a watertight bulkhead. To port, double berths with en suite heads are fore and aft, with a child’s berth far forward. That same layout is mirrored to starboard in the four-cabin Sunsail 444.

Hulls are constructed using isophthalic gelcoat and vinylester resin to resist osmosis. Balsa coring in the hulls and deck reduces weight and adds strength and stiffness. Hard chines and hulls that flare above the waterline provide both performance and increased interior volume. There’s plenty of the latter—and it’s well appointed, to boot. The doors fore and aft in the saloon, plus opening hatches, let in lots of light and ventilation. The interior decor is a blend of cherry laminates with white panels and light-colored upholstery. The up-style galley—with the storage and kit one would expect for a boat this size—is located aft to port and includes a two-drawer fridge and freezer and Corian counters. An optional generator is located forward, in a cockpit locker.

Overall, there was much to like about this latest offering from Robertson and Caine, and if I were a betting man, I’d wager that the concept of a cockpit forward might just set a trend for tropics-bound cats in the future.

Specifications

Leopard 44 - bareboat incl. with skipper catamarans.

The Leopard 44 has a forward cockpit with direct access from the saloon plus an extended bimini forward, the only charter catamaran with this functional design feature. Visibility from & through the saloon is exceptional. Cabins and en-suites are spacious.and while the boat lacks some storage space, how many clothes are needed on a sailing holiday in the sun?

Leopard 44

The most noticeable feature of the Leopard 44 is her covered forward cockpit accessible from the main saloon: a great space for socialising and relaxing while also bringing a cooling breeze into the interior. The glass-front to the saloon provides for excellent vision forward.

All cabins are large and spacious, featuring en-suite shower rooms with separate heads. The layout provides privacy and space where needed. This boat has low stern hull platforms that make getting in and out of the water easy. Electric davits offer stress-free tender launch and recovery.

Sailing the Leopard 44 is unlike sailing a normal catamaran. Not only is this boat good sailing up wind, but also steady downwind with limited roll. The 360° helm station gives complete control from one place. All electronic navigation aids are standard, and there are many additional features including air-conditioning. The 44 also has solar panels for added battery life.

This boat is available for charter in some destinations as the Sunsail 44 or Moorings 4400.

Ready to Rumble

Cleverly designed and easy to sail, this cruising cat is set for adventure.

leopard 44 sailboatdata

Designed by the American team of Gino Morrelli and Pete Melvin, the Leopard 44 is built in South Africa by Robertson and Caine. The combination of innovative design, excellent performance and robust construction has come to define the Leopard series. It is renown for introducing the forward cockpit to the cruising catamaran market. The charter boat version of the Leopard 44 is called the Sunsail 444.

leopard 44 sailboatdata

We had uncharacteristic light air as we pulled away from the dock at Miami Marina and made our way into Biscayne Bay. We hauled up the full-batten, square-topped main, unfurled the 120% genoa and eased south on a close reach. The 44’s efficient hulls are narrow at the waterline creating less wetted surface area for better performance before flaring for increased volume. A radius chine also adds interior volume and deflects water to keep a dry boat even dryer. The lower forward section of each hull includes a watertight bulkhead in case of collision, hinting at the serious bluewater capabilities of the Leopard 44. Many of the Leopards in this part of the world were delivered on their own bottoms, a 5,000-mile sail from Cape Town, South Africa, to the Caribbean.

leopard 44 sailboatdata

The aft cockpit is very comfortable with ample seating aft and to port. A large table accommodates a crowd and the aft seat tops cleverly rotate for sitting in two directions. The electric dinghy davits are push-button controlled and I like that when the dinghy is fully hoisted there is good visibility aft. The extended stern steps flow naturally into each hull and offer easy access to the water and for boarding the dinghy.

leopard 44 sailboatdata

The forward deck area features a large structural bridgedeck. There are two good-sized lazarettes that house the water tank and optional generator. The anchor locker is sandwiched between and the anchor is hoisted on the bridgedeck instead of from the forward crossbar. The full-width trampoline is a perfect spot for lounging. I like the molded rises along the side deck, a subtle but helpful reminder that you are at the deck edge as you make your way forward. There are well-placed stainless handrails along the coachroof and the molded nonskid is excellent.

leopard 44 sailboatdata

The interior is flooded with natural light and includes a large L-shaped galley to port. An important design feature was to avoid isolating the chef and Morrelli and Melvin succeeded as the galley faces aft and the large opening window keeps the chef in ear and eyeshot of the cockpit as well as the saloon. Two sinks, a three-burner stove and oven and drawer-style pull-out fridge and freezer are standard. There’s a lot of counter space and plenty of storage in cabinets above and lockers below. There’s a clever dedicated trash bin and in-floor bins for large items.

The electrical panel and compact stand up navigation station are aft to starboard. An L-shaped settee is forward to starboard and wraps around a huge table. It is not obvious that any interior space was sacrificed with the addition of the forward cockpit. Indeed, I like the full-sized door that allows access to deck cockpit and deck forward and also offers a natural air flow. The door is serious and can be secured in heavy going.

leopard 44 sailboatdata

Two guest cabins occupy the port hull. Each includes a double berth and en suite head. There is a single berth all the way forward, and unless the bunk is needed it makes an excellent storage bin. The Sunsail 444 charter version features four cabins and four heads.

Two 29-horsepower Yanmar diesels with saildrives are standard but many owners upgrade to the optional 39-horsepower models. Access is excellent through a watertight hatch, not just a fiberglass cover. Leopard does a good job of soundproofing the engine rooms. Two fuel tanks combine to hold 185 gallons.

Back on the bay the wind finally filled in and the Leopard 44 came to life. We cracked the sheets and with 10 knots of true of wind we eased up to 5, then 6 and finally to 6.5 knots. The helm was well-balanced and the visibility was excellent. We tacked and sheeted tight, bringing the boat up to 50 degrees apparent and maintaining 6 knots of boat speed. As the wind eased again we fell off and managed to keep moving all the way back to the marina. For a relatively heavy, offshore capable cat, I was impressed with how the 44 is easily driven and nimble.

It is easy to understand the popularity of the Leopard 44, especially as a family cruising boat. It’s solidly built, cleverly designed with an emphasis on privacy and comfort. It’s proven to be at home at sea or at anchor.

Yacht Overview

She isn't just the best priced Leopard on the market, she is the best sailing catamaran value anywhere. She's a privately owned 4 cabin 4 head with the new "milk" interior. Only 398 hours on the factory upgraded extra horsepower Yanmar engines. Wether your ambitions are to sail around the world or make money chartering, her minor cosmetic imperfections will get you into a much newer and nicer cat for way less!!

Recently been serviced as well as new bottom paint (May 2019). Great boat with the forward walk-through galley door. Solar panels, ice maker, auto-pilot, navigation, generator, stainless steel appliances, air-conditioning through-out.

Please call for more information and to schedule a private viewing. We recommend a viewing and a survey. She is in excellent condition for the price and worth viewing.

Located in Ft Lauderdale Florida

BUILDER'S REMARKS: The Leopard 44 was "Boat of the Year" when introduced in 2011. The judges were raving about the speed on the water, easy handling and the revolutionary forward cockpit.  The Leopard 44 features two cockpits, one fore and one aft with outside dining area protected by a functional hard-top bimini with mounted solar panels (back side). The galley-up has ample storage and a huge drawer type fridge and freezer. No steps up or down anywhere on the salon level. Sailing the Leopard 44 is easy: both main and jib sheets lead to stoppers and self-tailing (electric) winches directly adjacent to the helm. There’s room for two on the bench-style helm seat, but you need only one to trim sails!
