Drake Talks Plans for a "Graceful Exit" From the Music Industry

“i’m not going to force myself to compete.”.

After releasing his critically acclaimed Let’s Start Here album , Lil Yachty has now turned his attention to his sunglasses brand, FUTUREMOOD . Promoting his emerging imprint, Lil Yachty launched FUTUREMOOD ‘s “A Moody Conversation” by tapping Drake for a candid interview.

During the chat, the two artists went back and forth in the engaging conversation but an interesting moment came when Drake shared that he’s been mulling “a graceful exit.” At the 5:50 mark, the Canadian artist begins to discuss the idea after being asked about what there is “to even search for or want” anymore. “Well, I think like on a broader scale, I think I’m at the point now where I just wanna, like—I feel like maybe we talked about this the other day—but I feel like I’m kind of introducing the concept in my mind of a graceful exit, said Drake.”

Lil Yachty Broke Down Why Friend And Frequent Collaborator Drake Is ‘Really, Really Smart’

Lexi Lane

Lil Yachty opened up about his close bond with Drake during a new conversation with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, where he also touched on his new album, Let’s Start Here . The two rappers have collaborated even more in recent years, as Yachty had writing credits on Drake and 21 Savage’s 2022 album Her Loss , for “Jumbotron Sh*t Poppin,” “Privileged Rappers,” and more tracks.

“I love him to death,” Yachty said of Drake. “Yeah, that’s my guy, man… our relationship has just grown. I had a conversation with him after, and I was just telling him, ‘Man, this music that you made over this time period has affected so many people.'”

Yachty also revealed that any time Drake drops, he has trouble controlling his feels. So much so, that he shared a joke about how Drake’s music makes people call their exes during a conversation they had.

“I said, ‘Man, I remember there was a point in time when you were about to release music, and everyone was like, ‘Man, I’m about to call my ex. Like, oh man, I’m finna cry,”” he said. “That was a time period. And that’s when people thought when Drake was finna drop, you thought like, ‘Oh man, I’m about to get back with my ex-girlfriend.’ You felt like emotions were about to be pulled out of you.”

“At this point, I feel so close to him,” Yachty added. “I feel like whatever he does, I did it. If he wins something, I feel like I just won. He’s really, really smart. No matter how much he’ll act like he’s oblivious to his career and the things that he’s done, he knows what certain things and certain moments in his career mean to people.”

Drake and Lil Yachty

On “Too Much” featuring Sampha, Drake rapped “Moment I stop havin’ fun with it, I’ll be done with it,” and a recent interview with Lil Yachty teases the time may have come. The 36-year-old rapper hinted at retiring from music during a snippet shared on social media.

Conducted to promote Lil Boat’s new sunglasses company, Future Mood, the “Poland” rapper promised to share the full conversation on Friday (Feb. 24).

This is not the first time the chart-topping rapper has discussed retirement with his peers, however, his tune has changed. According to HipHopDX , during an episode of Queen Radio with Nicki Minaj in August 2022, the “light skin Keith Sweat” discussed his intention to never put down the mic.

“I’m not at that point where I even consider that being an option,” explained the highest-selling singles artist in RIAA history. “One of the best feelings I have in my life is completing a song or project. And by the way, those things are painful as well. A lot of nerves, a lot of confidence wavering. “

He continued, “But I feel like I’m reaching a new level of fun. I’ve reached a new level of comfortability where I want to try things. Like this last album, I put out something I wanted to do to challenge myself.”

Lil Yachty and Drake

In the latest episode of “The Really Good Podcast,” host Bobbi Althoff turned her focus on hip hop heavyweight Lil Yachty today (July 27). Following her headline-grabbing interview with Drake, the TikTok star’s latest one-on-one gifted listeners with another riveting hour of candid dialogue.

Early in their exchange, she broached the depth of Yachty’s relationship with the Toronto superstar. With Yachty comfortably dressed in an “I Love Scene H**s” t-shirt, he offered a refreshingly candid response. The artist suggested that their rapport runs as deep as “the center of the Earth.” Although he stopped short of declaring Drizzy his best friend worldwide, the Atlanta native admitted he is certainly in his “Top 3.”

Toward the end of their conversation, Drake fittingly interrupted the interview. In a snippet shared alongside the episode’s debut, Althoff stated, “Don’t say nothing crazy.”

The “God’s Plan” hitmaker revealed, “It ain’t easy. It’s a tough one to power through, I’m not going to lie to you. God bless her heart, though.” Yachty responded, “Brother, I’m the one holding this conversation alive. I’ll tell you that much.”

Elsewhere in the conversation, Yachty spoke to the TikToker about his latest venture, “A Safe Place Podcast.” He explained, “I did it for my best friend… I did it because I wanted to make him rich.” When asked whether it was working, the musician replied, “Not yet. Well, I don’t know. We got our first sponsor. We got a pretty good signing deal. He’s not rich, but he has more money than he started with.”

Moreover, Althoff’s sit-down with Drake not only paved the way for her exchange with Yachty but also bolstered her show’s reputation. The Toronto native’s scolding of the host for missing her daughter’s first birthday for their interview sparked amusement and debate among fans.

Evident in this interview, the special camaraderie between Drake and Yachty highlighted the mutual respect they share. Yachty’s acknowledgment of the rapper as a role model echoed the sentiments of many others in the industry, including 21 Savage and Ice Spice.

Watch as Drake gets super offended when being called 'old'

Drake didn't seem open to the idea of getting 'old' when fellow rapper Lil Yachty teased him about his age in a new YouTube video.

The 36-year-old sat down to discuss his plans to retire from music, when 25-year-old Lil Yachty jibed that his age was 'getting up there'.

"By the time I get old as f***, you're gonna be in a cane", the rapper jokes.

"It's like cool to you that you're 25 – I get it, I was there", Drake quips back, awkwardly trying to brush it off.

Drake Reveals He's Started Plotting His 'Graceful Exit'

Is there more drake reveals he’s started plotting his ‘graceful exit’ from music in interview with lil yachty.

Drake is apparently plotting his “graceful exit” from music, according to Drizzy himself who shared the news with Lil Yachty.

Thus far in his career, Drake has not gone over 90 days without releasing new music in some fashion. His run is unprecedented and June will mark the 13th year of him dominating the rap game. As much as we’d like to believe he could run things forever, Drake may have other plans.

Lil Yachty has an upcoming interview with the 6God as a promo for his company FUTUREMOOD . In the sneak peek released By Boat, Drizzy shockingly reveals that he’s started to think about retirement.

“I think I’m at the point now where I just wanna, like, I feel like maybe we talked about this the other day but I feel like I’m kind of introducing the concept in my mind of a graceful exit,” Drizzy tells Yachty in the clip.

This sounds crazy with how energized and fresh Drake flowed throughout his Her Loss collaborative album with 21 Savage.  Considering that there are rumors that Universal slid Drizzy a $600M+ check to keep the hits coming, perhaps retirement is a silly thought.

Do YOU think Drake is really thinking about retiring? If so, what do you think he could do next?

Lil Yachty Sends Drake Fans Into A Frenzy By Unfollowing Him On IG

Drake Lil Yachty Unfollow Instagram Hip Hop News

It seems like fans will spend "Another Late Night" theorizing and speculating as to who Drake is beefing with next. Moreover, some eagle-eyed fans on social media recently noticed that Lil Yachty seemed to unfollow him on Instagram. This shocked a lot of admirers thanks to the duo's strong collaborative and personal relationship prior to this, as well as the fact that they engaged with each other online as much as in person. Furthermore, OVO and Concrete supporters immediately got into detective mode, speculating that the supposed upcoming release of Drizzy's " Supersoak " has something to do with it.

If you didn't already know, DJ Akademiks previewed a clip of the music video for this song, which originally featured Lil Yachty. In fact, it was Yachty who leaked the original collab version of the song to Kai Cenat for him to play it on his livestream. This was because they couldn't clear the sample, as the sampled artist Mr. Hotspot's religious views prompted him to demand a clean version of the team-up . With this new development in mind, many speculate that Mr. Hotspot is mad at Yachty for revealing all this on a podcast, and told the 6ix God that he could drop it if he removed his partner.

Lil Yachty Seemingly Unfollows Drake

Of course, that's just an unfounded theory, and so will any others before one of them actually speaks out about it. Still, we're not even inclined to believe that this indicates a rift between the two, as it could just as easily be a promo tactic. Nevertheless, it's not like Drake and Lil Yachty's relationship has all been peaches and cream. For example, the latter's thoughts on the former's beef with Kendrick Lamar resulted in considerable uproar from the Toronto superstar's die-hards.

Regardless, we'll see if Drake and Lil Yachty speak on this at any point. It's not like every fan loved this collab , but fans worry about this partnership fading. After all, they picked a pretty contentious and controversial moment to stir even more rumors about who is or isn't beefing. Are they bamboozling us just to troll or is there something deeper going on?

Who Is Bobbi Althoff? All About the Influencer Who's Interviewed Drake and Lil Yachty

Bobbi Althoff went viral for interviewing Drake in his bed on her podcast, 'The Really Good Podcast'

Rebecca Aizin is an Editorial Assistant at PEOPLE. She has been working at PEOPLE since 2023. Her work has previously appeared on Elle, HGTV and Backstage.

lil yachty interview drake

Bobbi Althoff went from posting mom content regularly to interviewing famous rappers in a matter of two years.

The 27-year-old influencer began posting videos on TikTok in 2021, mainly focusing on content surrounding her children and her pregnancy experiences. However, she skyrocketed to fame in 2023 when she began her podcast, The Really Good Podcast .

So far, Althoff has interviewed rappers Drake and Lil Yachty , businessman Mark Cuban , actor Rick Glassman and YouTuber Funny Marco, among others.

Known and beloved for her deadpan humor and for intentionally making her interviewees uncomfortable, Althoff has amassed over 8 million TikTok followers and more than 1 million subscribers on her YouTube channel , where she posts her podcast episodes.

However, since her success, some have questioned who Althoff is and how she rose to fame so quickly, prompting rumors that she is an “industry plant” — someone who is secretly being backed by the industry to help them achieve success.

In response to the gossip, Althoff posted a video of herself dancing awkwardly to Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice ’s “Barbie World,” with the caption, “Celebrating because the industry planted me.”

So, who is Bobbi Althoff? Here’s everything to know about the TikTok influencer and podcaster.

She started posting on TikTok in 2021

Althoff began posting regularly on TikTok in 2021, focusing mainly on content surrounding being a mom. Her early TikToks revolved around her pregnancy with her second daughter and motherhood.

In one of her first public TikToks from July 2021, Althoff wrote “when people choose to have their kids in their 20’s instead of waiting till they are at least 35+” over a video of herself mouthing the lyrics to Minaj's "Grindin'." She sings along to the words “dang little mama you is such a loser” repeatedly, seemingly mimicking people who have made comments to her about being a young mom, asking, “Why waste your youth?” in the caption.

She continued posting videos through 2022, mainly of her pregnancy, like clips of her dancing and struggling in the heat at Disneyland .

In the latter, she joked how she was "10 months pregnant" and at the theme park in the June heat.

“I was hoping that I’d be able to walk her out or something but that doesn’t feel like it’s happening,” she said. “She’s never coming, I will be pregnant for the rest of my life and that’s just something I’m going to have to accept.”

She was married for four years

Bobbi and Cory Althoff wed on Jan. 31, 2020, and share two children. Sadly, in February 2024, Cory filed for divorce and listed July 4, 2023, as the date of the couple's separation.

"As sad as I am right now, I am so thankful for the time I got to be his wife," Bobbi wrote on Instagram after the news broke. "While our relationship did not work out as husband and wife, we will always be friends and I will always love him ."

The exes finalized their divorce within a matter of months. Bobbi and Cory determined that neither party would pay spousal support or child support and agreed to joint legal custody of their two daughters.

According to his LinkedIn , Cory is a programmer who works as a senior vice president at CompTIA and is a published author of two books about self-teaching computer science and coding.

She shares two children with Cory

Althoff has two daughters, whom she refers to as Concrete and Richard, in an effort to keep their names and identities private. While she never shows their faces, she has featured her younger child on her TikTok since the baby was born in June 2022.

In her younger daughter's first appearance, Althoff posted a video of herself just a few weeks after giving birth as she got ready with the newborn to do chores.

“I’m gonna baby wear her so that I can get some laundry done and just get some stuff done around the house,” she said in the TikTok.

Sticking with the bit that she named her daughter Concrete, Althoff responded with a video to a comment in November 2022 of someone critiquing her name choice.

“I don’t see anything wrong with the name Concrete,” she said. “It is a pretty common word so I don’t understand why it would not make a good name. My daughter is going to be a very strong woman with a very strong name for her.”

She continued, “I grew up in the construction business and I just always wanted my daughter to have some ties to myself so yes her name is Concrete Sawdust Althoff so I encourage you guys to think outside the box when naming your children because the future will be a better place if we stop caring about what we name our littles.”

Althoff has since deleted all her videos with her children, explaining on the BFFs podcast that she didn't want them to have a digital footprint.

"I'm so happy I [deleted the videos], especially since I made that decision before [the podcast] because I don't want them to have the digital footprint that I've created," she said. "Now when they go public and they're not with me, I don't have to worry so that's good."

She started her podcast in April 2023

Althoff debuted her podcast, The Really Good Podcast, in April 2023, and one of her first guests was Tammin Sursok, who played Jenna on Pretty Little Liars . Althoff cemented her signature awkward, confrontational style when one of her first questions was, “So you were on a show called Pretty Little Liars . Was the lie that you’re pretty?”

Months later, Althoff revealed on the BFFs podcast that she used to drive to Los Angeles once a week and would pay influencers $300 to join her podcast.

Since then, she has welcomed various other influencers and stars on her podcast, including TikTok star Morgan Presley and Not Dead Yet actor Rick Glassman.

In an April TikTok promoting her podcast, Althoff wrote about how starting a podcast was always a dream of hers.

“I’ve always dreamed of having my own podcast…So I filmed a pilot episode…,” she wrote. “Everyone I showed it to said it was awful..They said I wouldn’t secure celebrity guests anymore…That no one would watch it … But I proved them wrong … It got 6 views and my famous neighbor agreed to do an episode….Don’t give up on your dreams. Ever.”

In an interview with TODAY in August 2023, Althoff said she got the idea to start a podcast using the "dry humor" character she's known for — and emphasized that's not how she is in real life.

A week later, Althoff shared with Cosmopolitan how she doesn't prepare too much for her interviews — but thinks her awkward style is what makes them special.

“ There’s no prep, and that’s the fun of it,” she explained. “I think that’s why celebrities are down to do it. They know it’s a character, and we just wing it. It’s not a real interview. I’m not trying to get hard-hitting information about you — I’m not trying to uncover anything. It’s just a conversation. It’s really a parody of a good interview.”

She interviewed Drake and Lil Yachty in July 2023

After over 2 million views on her interview with YouTuber Funny Marco, Althoff had already gone viral. But her fame escalated when she teased that the next episode of her podcast would be with Drake.

On TODAY, Althoff said that the interview came about when Drake saw her episode with Funny Marco and liked the video and followed her.

"When I saw he followed me, I was like I'm gonna ask," she said. She proceeded to direct message him, and three days later, she was interviewing him in bed.

Her full 1-hour long interview on YouTube, which was released on July 20, 2023, garnered over 9 million views. During her conversation with the star, Althoff maintained her stoic, quiet tone the entire time and did not appear impressed with Drake — nor the fact that they were conducting the interview in a bed.

"The idea behind it was it would be a funny thing that you wanted to do it so bad that you bothered him while he was going to bed to do it," she explained on TODAY. "Now we do all my podcasts in random locations."

During one particularly jokingly tense moment, Althoff asked Drake not to drink while she interviews him. “It’s a nightcap!” he said. “It’s sad,” she replied.

Just weeks after she interviewed Drake, however, fans noticed that the Certified Lover Boy rapper and the podcast host had unfollowed each other on Instagram, and Althoff took down her interview with him from all her platforms.

The unfollowing came just days after Althoff posted a TikTok of herself attending Drake's concert in L.A. where she stood in the crowd with her arms crossed with her signature deadpan expression as people danced around her. “Really in my element @ this guy’s concert,” she jokingly captioned the post.

In July 2023, Althoff also posted another hour-long interview with rapper Lil Yachty where the two joked about being young parents, fame and their careers. In the middle of the interview, Drake even called Lil Yachty and shouted hello to Althoff.

“What’s up Bobbo?” Drake said as Lil Yachty turned the phone toward her.

In August 2023, she interviewed Mark Cuban.

She shared that her podcast popping off was "crazy." "I always wanted it to blow up obviously, you hope for something but it's crazy when it actually happens," she said.

Shaquille O'Neal asked her on a date

When Shaquille O'Neal was chatting with Funny Marco on an episode of The Big Podcast with Shaq, the rumors that Marco and Althoff have been dating came up, and Marco refused to answer the NBA legend's question about how long they had been dating.

O'Neal took matters into his own hands and called Althoff on camera to ask her out on a date.

"I'm sitting here with Funny Marco. He told me to ask you on a date , so can I take you to the movies?" he asked, to which she replied, "Sure."

Drake and Lil Yachty may be at odds with each other—well, at least that’s what fans are currently speculating. While the evidence is somewhat inconclusive, nosy fans believe they have the receipts to back up their theory that Drizzy has upset Lil Boat and possibly fractured their relationship.

The circumstances causing the rift, one might ask? None other than one of the Toronto rapper‘s patented leaked releases. To be more specific, it appears the mellow drama may have erupted over the “Super Soak (S.O.D.)” collaboration that Yachty gave to streamer Kai Cenat to leak during a stream last month.

The track itself has seemingly already caused more than enough controversy, between Soulja Boy responding and threatening to figuratively choose violence should the song end up being a sneak diss, and Yachty revealing they leaked the song because they couldn’t get the sample cleared.

However, after reports that Drake is readying the song for an official release accompanied by a music video, but not a featured verse from Lil Boat as expected, the track has begun causing a stair once again.

Now, it appears the scandal attached to the release relates to Yachty’s alleged reaction to being taken off of the track. Instagram users pointed out that it appears as though Yachty unfollowed Drake on Instagram shortly after the rumors began circulating that his verse had been cut from the song.

But it appears as though the fan theory is either half-baked or Yachty was fully cooked on social media and reacted quickly considering fans also pointed out that Lil Boat appeared to be following Drizzy again after being called out on the timeline.

Though it feels like a bit of a reach to assume there is trouble in paradise for this collaborative pair based on a pair of screenshots from Instagram, the situation could also be very plausible. Yachty did end up swearing off of the Internet, after being roasted online following the interview he revealed the reason why social media influencer Mr. Hotspot denied clearing the sample for he and Drake in the first place.

“We couldn’t get the sample cleared so I just let Kai play it,” he shared. Yachty also announced that they were not officially releasing the track. “But it’s everywhere,” he said, adding that Mr. Hotspot “went down like a Christian path…it was crazy, everyone was like, ‘Are you serious?'”

In a sense, it wouldn’t be hard to believe that Lil Yachty is somewhat scorned by Drake’s choice to remove him from the track given all of the effort he’s put forth in order to bring it to the masses.

Fans Think Lil Yachty Unfollowed Drake Amid Drama Over Leaked Collaboration

Lil Yachty and Drake have been good friends for a long time, but fans believe a discrepancy over a song may have sparked a rift between both artists.

It all began earlier this week when Akademiks told his followers that Drake plans to release the song "S.O.D (Super Soak)." The media personality also claimed Drizzy will drop a music video for the track and reportedly played a clip of the visuals during his live stream. According to Ak, the song will arrive with one major update — Lil Boat won't be on it. Fans believe the news upset Yachty enough to unfollow The Boy on Instagram.

The alleged update shocked fans as well. Lil Yachty reportedly brought the song to Drake and intended to put it on the Concrete Boys' recent album. Their collaboration contains a sample of "Goodness Gracious" by Mr. HotSpot, who unfortunately prevented them from releasing it due to the explicit language in the song. Mr. HotSpot eventually told the duo they could use his song if they cleaned up their verses.

Before the sample was cleared, Yachty decided to leak the song to streamer Kai Cenat. At first, Soulja Boy thought it was Drake's way of responding to his X rant about him , but he cleared things up with Drizzy and claimed it wasn't supposed to drop at all.

Fans realized Yachty unfollowed Drake after news about the updated song went viral. It's not clear if he'll address the situation online. Yachty recently claimed he was done with social media after he confirmed Karrahbooo's departure from Concrete Boys . After fans called him out, Yachty returned to Instagram to re-follow Drake, and this time it was no accident. Check out the receipts below.

The three tracks arrive a few weeks after the rapper dropped a massive folder on 100gigs.org of unreleased music, behind-the-scenes footage, tour set designs and clips from the studio. Among the files were another trio of songs — “It’s Up” featuring Young Thug and 21 Savage, “Blue Green Red” and “Housekeeping Knows” featuring Latto — that he also debuted on his IG burner before officially releasing them to DSPs a few days later.

Drake & Lil Yachty Given Ultimatum By Mr. HotSpot Over 'Super Soak' Sample Controversy

Drake & Lil Yachty Given Ultimatum By Mr. HotSpot Over 'Super Soak' Sample Controversy

Drake and Lil Yachty have been given a final ultimatum by Mr. HotSpot after they sampled his song “Goodness Gracious” on “Super Soak” without his permission.

Yachty leaked the song to streamer Kai Cenat earlier this month after Mr. HotSpot, an internet star best known for his viral dance videos and association with Tha Krew, refused to clear the sample due to his religious conversion.

HotSpot has now said that he will give clearance for the sample, but only if Drake and Yachty do a clean version of the song and alter some lyrics to make it more child-friendly.

Speaking on TikTok Live, he said: “We recorded them a clean reference. We sent that in to them so hopefully they re-record the clean reference and we come out with the clean ‘Goodness Gracious’ all together.

“It’s a process but it’ll be good for both of their brands like that and I’m blessed to work with children so we just gotta make it clean for them.”

He added: “We don’t need no children getting whooped cause they said this or that. If you look at the backside, it’s the children who really running these views up so if we can make sure both verses clean, everybody coming clean, everybody gonna benefit for sure.

“We ain’t trying to hold them back from nothing but we just need the morals correct, that’s all.”

During an appearance on comedian Andrew Schultz’s Flagrant podcast last week, Lil Yachty appeared unhappy that Mr. HotSpot had rejected his and Drake’s sample clearance request for “Super Soak.”

“He went down, like, a Christian path,” he said before revealing that HotSpot wasn’t interested in being compensated for the sample. “I don’t think we got in to money. He was like, ‘No.’ It was crazy, Everyone was like, ‘Are you serious?'”

Yachty also suggested that he and Drake could still make money from the song by performing it at shows, especially given the buzz surrounding it after being premiered by Cenat.

The Atlanta rapper was subsequently criticized for leaking “Super Soak” given Mr. HotSpot’s religious objections, which was seemingly part of the reason that Yachty decided to quit social media .

The leaked song also ruffled the feathers of Soulja Boy who suspected that Drake was taking a shot at him by appearing to reference his SODMG record label and 2007 song “Super Soak.”

After calling out the 6 God in a social media rant , the “Crank That” rapper clarified that he and Drizzy had cleared the air and that “it wasn’t no diss.”

A tightly packed crowd of onlookers watches as Cash Cobain, wearing sunglasses and a hat with “Queens” written on it, raps into a microphone.

Cash Cobain Is Steering Drill Rap’s Sexy Swerve

The rapper and producer’s lusty rhymes and unorthodox samples have made hits for hip-hop’s most lascivious luminaries. With a new album, he aims to join them.

Drill music hasn’t always been this fun. The subgenre’s ominous beats and menacing lyrics infiltrated mainstream hip-hop over a decade ago, but its ascendant stars have been stalled by violence, police surveillance and the flattening effect of at-home copycats. Cash Cobain, the 26-year-old breakout rapper and producer from the Bronx, is helping to raise its trajectory. With lusty rhymes and unorthodox samples, he’s become a central figure of “sexy drill,” a more lascivious offshoot, and one that has tilted the sound of rap nationally.

En route to a Coney Island performance in early August, sitting in the passenger seat of a new Mercedes sedan, Cobain rapped along to “Rump Punch,” a song from his upcoming album, as it oozed through the speakers. In between doo-wop-esque lines of flattery for a paramour (“When it comes to pretty, you the pinnacle”), the track sandwiches a hilariously profane offer of oral sex between dreamy keys and a simple repeated drumstick clack.

When people hear his music, he explained, “everyone should feel that, feel like they can’t control their body. Their body just gotta dance because the music is so sexy.”

It’s a sound that has caught the ears of the melodically inclined hornballs that constitute rap’s upper reaches, perhaps best defined by the 2022 moment when Frank Ocean debuted a gold and diamond-studded sex toy for his jewelry line and used a Cobain track to soundtrack the introductory Instagram post. But the lusty stamp that counts most came when Lil Yachty passed along several Cobain beats to Drake , who barely tweaked one for “Calling for You,” a single that reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. In the past year, Cobain has rapped on tracks he produced for PinkPantheress and Central Cee, Don Toliver and J. Cole.

Cash Cobain poses for a photo in front of a rollercoaster. He wears a tilted baseball cap and a necklace that reads “Slizzy.”

By the time Cobain was set for a New York City victory lap, a show in April called Slizzy Fest , demand was such that police preemptively shut it down for overcrowding. (Fans got wind that Drake might attend.) Cobain led fans to Union Square and held an open-air show, rapping along to music boosted by a Bluetooth speaker. Born Cashmere Small (yes, his stage name nods to the late Nirvana frontman), Cobain is now on a national tour supporting Ice Spice , the reigning queen of “pop drill” and his collaborator on the remix of “Fisherrr,” a single that has steadily crept East to West across airwaves since its release in February. The song and the tour are a conjoining of drill’s sonic offspring, each taking the sound past its hyperlocal roots. His new album, “Play Cash Cobain,” is set to arrive Friday with cover art by Drake, and it both trades in Cobain’s usual tropes and offers a bunch of groovable swerves.

Amid a pop-rap landscape that writhes in bald sexuality, Cobain’s sound is distinguished by a livelier energy and idiosyncratic choices. The drums don’t appear until almost 40 seconds into the album’s opener, “Slizzyhunchodon.” Cobain swaps drill’s minor-key darkness for major chords, layers in New Jersey club tempos and, most identifiably, whittles unexpected loops from well-chosen samples.

“Some songs you may not know where the hell the hook is at. The beat might not drop until the middle of the song,” he said. “I’m just looking for, like, something different every time.”

His unorthodox approach doesn’t stop internet beatmakers from trying to emulate it. Start typing “Cash Cobain” into a search field and Google and YouTube will autofill “Cash Cobain-type beat.” Video platforms are riddled with producers who’ve set ’90s R&B loops to drill kicks, so much so that his signature tag, which you can hear on every song he produces, announces its legitimacy each time: “got this beat from Cash not from YouTube.”

“It’s the way he just goes about using a loop or a sample within his beat,” said Don Toliver, the platinum-selling Houston rapper. He tapped Cobain’s production and rapping for “Attitude,” the second single from his 2023 album, which features a loop that samples Pharrell Williams singing the first and last “ohs” of the refrain to his 2018 single with Snoop Dogg, “Beautiful.”

“It screams to me like, let’s go, like it’s time to go up,” Toliver said of the track. “So I just wanted to match the energy from me as best as I possibly could.”

Growing up among extended family in the Bronx and later in Queens, Cobain would hear everything from Willie Nelson to Japanese jazz to Billy Ocean, mostly played by a grandmother who majored in world studies in college. But his mother, Priscilla, who had Cobain at 17, steered into the likes of Patti LaBelle, Mary J. Blige, Jodeci and 50 Cent.

The grown-ups bought Baby Cash every cheap drum set and keyboard Toys "R" Us offered until he was old enough to search “beat making” on his grandmother’s desktop computer. He eventually found the demo version of the audio program FL Studio and went on to downloading too-big files and several viruses.

“He would mess up so many computers, I would just rip the hard drives out,” Priscilla said in a video interview. She held a pile of disks in an open palm, letting them slide through her manicured fingers before scooping up more. “He [expletive] them up and we let him.”

At around 13, Cobain hit the limits of the free beat-making software (“I couldn’t go back to it, edit it, nothing,” he said) and decided he wanted to rap. To do so, he played to Priscilla’s supportive inclination. Riding in her beat-up Volkswagen along Third Avenue in the Bronx, they listened to Lloyd Banks’s “Beamer, Benz or Bentley,” a staple of New York radio that could be endlessly looped to add guest verses. They half-jokingly added their own right there in the car, and Cobain told her they sounded good enough to record — but first he’d need a microphone. She got him a $20 one from a local shop, but he eventually talked her into buying a $300 snowball mic from Guitar Center in 2011, a year before the Chicago rapper Chief Keef’s “I Don’t Like” became an early drill anthem.

By the time the genre permeated New York a few years later, police departments nationwide were connecting the music with gang activity described in its lyrics and by its performers on social media. Though drill artists like Pop Smoke , Fivio Foreign , Sheff G and others had begun to perform in Europe and on festival stages across the United States, the N.Y.P.D. removed them from local stages, citing public safety concerns.

Cobain had by then dived into drill beats, sparking some interest on SoundCloud, but it wasn’t until the pandemic’s forced isolation that he locked in with other New York artists looking to make the same kind of party music he was. “Everybody was in the crib and everybody was on Clubhouse,” said Chow Lee, a frequent collaborator who described entire days wasted hanging on the social audio app talking with Lonny Love, Payroll and other artists who are now staples of the current scene.

When restrictions began to lift, they’d throw underground parties to showcase the early sexy drill that they’d been posting to SoundCloud and YouTube. “You can’t really build a community around drill because you can’t be outside performing,” said Gabe P., the host of the internet rap show “On the Radar,” which first showcased Cobain and Chow Lee in 2021.

He added, “These parties felt like safe spaces where you could have fun. There’ll be girls there. The girls will be having fun, they feel safe and the artists feel safe. And I think they just created that environment.”

Cobain’s live shows extend the vibe. The sound system at the free show in Coney Island was shoddy, so the audience leaned in to fill in the lyrics of “Dunk Contest,” which describe various sexual acts Cobain wants to perform on girls mentioned by name. They reach a tittering pitch when Marni, his sometime girlfriend (“She’s my sweetheart. The Slizzy Princess”), waves as he sings, “I don’t think that I should talk ’bout Marni.” They repeat the dynamic two days later onstage at Terminal 5 for the New York stop of Ice Spice’s “Y2K” tour to a raucous crowd that half-sings, half-squeals in response.

Before that Coney Island performance, Cobain killed time over a plate of chicken tacos. Surrounded by a couple of burly bodyguards, they all test out the arcade punching bag game once the tacos are done, and fans who happen upon them will flutter about taking selfies and broadcasting on Instagram live as they join his walk to the makeshift stage. It’s a low-key flashback to the Union Square caravan and flies in the face of the concerns that had the police pulling his drill peers from stages just a few years earlier.

When Cobain is asked what it means to him to perform in his hometown, he raises his eyebrows above his black sunglasses.

“It means everything,” he said. “I just know that I’m not rapping about killing nobody. I don’t have nobody rapping about killing me, or at least I hope not. It feels amazing for real, because I know how New York can get.”
