Lunenburg Yacht Club has easy access to some of the best cruising waters in North America , which include a myriad of beautiful islands, many with beautiful beaches.  LYC operates a variety of family-oriented and water-based facilities for everyone from yacht racers to land-based gourmets.

LYC has a strong  keelboat racing  program , and our racers perform extremely well when traveling to other clubs for competition.  We also have had many very successful dinghy sailors at the club, including Olympian Lisa Ross and World Youth Sailors Daniel Baker and Adam Taylor to name a few.  LYC has also hosted many successful national and international regattas, including the World Youth Sailing Championship, Optimist Canadian Championships, Sonar North American championships and  the 2017 Sonar World Championships. LYC’s  Learn-to-Sail  program has some of the best facilities in Nova Scotia , and even more space following our recent acquisition of a next-door property.  The program offers sailing lessons for ages 6 and up throughout the summer.

In 2014 LYC started a  Rowing program . All equipment is provided and instruction covers both youth and adults. Instructional programs, racing, cruising, fuel, social events, restaurant and bar services are all available.

Welcome Back to Nova Scotia

Published on August 12th, 2020 by Editor -->

The Lunenburg Yacht Club (LYC) is hosting its inaugural Welcome Back Regatta on August 21-23 in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Due to COVID-19, most events were cancelled this summer, leading to a lack of competitive sailing events in Nova Scotia. However, LYC has seized the opportunity to put together a world class event to help people get back on the water while respecting government regulations.

“Given current global conditions, it’s really a unique privilege to be able to put on an event and race sailboats with our friends from across Nova Scotia in home waters,” said Andreas Josenhans, LYC’s Commodore Elect and an America’s Cup winner. “We’re excited to fill the need for world class racing here at home. It’s a chance to get out on the water and enjoy excellent sailing in the comfort of your own backyard.”

Sailors attending from across the Maritimes can expect three days of racing for both one design and PHRF fleets. It’s expected that 30 to 40 sailboats will participate in the regatta, making it Nova Scotia’s largest keelboat event this summer.

For Chester native Jacob Saunders, who was in the midst of an Olympic campaign before the pandemic, the Welcome Back Regatta is an opportunity to sail and keep his competitive edge. “We’re very fortunate to live in Nova Scotia on any given day, but to be in a place where we can gather and host an event like this is special,” he said. “It’s great to see one design racing happening this year.”

Canada’s foremost international regatta for differently abled sailors is coming to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia for the 2024 Mobility Cup.

Gale Fullerton, the General Manager of the Lunenburg Yacht Club (LYC), credited the event’s stop in Lunenburg to their longstanding Sail Able program, which provides sailing opportunities to those with mental or physical disabilities. Lunenburg’s Sail Able Program caters to eight consistent participants, each of which requires four volunteers.

“It’s such an amazing program. It’s so uplifting to see folks have that level of independence that no matter what their physical abilities are, they can sail a boat by themselves,” said Fullerton.

Having experience with Sail Able programs, the LYC decided to host a “mini Mobility Cup,” where they invited sailors from other clubs to Lunenburg for a fun day of racing.

Spurred on by the success of their trial regatta, the LYC applied for and was accepted to host 2024’s Mobility Cup from August 26–30. On August 23–25, boats will arrive in Lunenburg via CN Rail from across Canada as sailors and volunteers begin to register for the event. The opening ceremonies and reception for the cup will be held on the waterfront, featuring an appearance from Nova Scotia’s iconic Bluenose II .

The event will feature two racecourses, which will alternate between two fleets every day. The first fleet, known as the Silver Fleet, is made up of more inexperienced sailors, while the Gold Fleet is made up of what Fullerton described as the “masters of the event.”

“They alternate every day. One day, the Gold Fleet will race in the morning and Silver in the afternoon, then they switch the following day,” said Fullerton. “The racecourse is going to be right in front of the yacht club. It’s right in the inlet in the channel out from the yacht club, so there will be a huge opportunity for photography and spectators.”

The LYC will host a barbecue on August 27 for both fleets attending the Mobility Cup. On August 29, the club will host Clearwater Seafoods’ lobster bake and banquet.

Following a week of racing, entertainment and dining at the LYC, will be the Mobility Cup awards and closing ceremonies. In total, 17 awards will be handed out. The winner in the Gold Fleet races will be awarded the Mobility Cup itself, while the Silver Fleet champion will receive the Le Coupe Dellaire.

Other awards include the Sam Sullivan Trophy, which will be awarded to the highest finishing competitor using “sip and puff” technology. There is also the Darin Tucker Sportsmanship Award, given to a competitor who displays “fair play and grace, respect for the sport and respect for fellow sailors.” The Debbie Donald Award will be presented to the highest placing female sailors, while the Hamilton Harbour Commission Trophy is reserved for a first timer to the event who finished the highest amongst other rookies. Five keeper prizes will also be awarded to the top five finishers in each fleet. Finally, the Rob Battilana Trophy is reserved for a member of the organizing committee in recognition of a significant volunteer contribution.

“We will have some local dignitaries at the event. Our club commodore will speak, the President of the Able Sail Network will speak,” said Fullerton. “Every athlete will be given a giftbag to take home, and then it’s just about saying goodbye.”

In the spirit of hosting the Mobility Cup, Fullerton added that the LYC is in the process of constructing several accessibility upgrades to the club.

“As much as we thought we were doing really good things for accessibility, we were doing them all wrong,” said Fullerton. “We’re half accessible, but that’s not good enough. There’s a new standard in Nova Scotia for accessibility in public places that’s set to hit the ground in 2030. With this event in mind, we engaged an architect to figure out what we really needed to do. There’s a wish list of what we’d like to do, but for the purpose of this event — to get the club properly ready for the athletes who were coming — there were certain must-haves. So, we’re working on those right now. We’re under construction.”

New York Yacht Club to Host 2025 Team Racing Worlds

New York Yacht Club to Host 2025 Team Racing Worlds in Sonar Keelboats

Newport, R.I. — The New York Yacht Club, which sparked the keelboat team racing revolution with the creation of the Hinman Masters Team Race in 2000, will see this discipline attain the highest competitive level in the sport when it hosts the World Sailing 2025 Team Race World Championship, May 28 to June 1, at Harbour Court in Newport, R.I.

The first team racing world championship in a decade will be sailed in the Club’s fleet of 23-foot  Sonar keelboats  in a two-on-two format. While not as widespread as the three-on-three format that is used in scholastic and collegiate racing in the United States and elsewhere around the world, the two-on-two format has won a lot of support with its easy-to-understand scoring format—whichever team finishes in last position loses the race—non-stop action and smaller team size.

For more on previous editions of the Team Racing World Championship, click  here .

“When this came forward, when the bid package came out, we said of course we’d want to run this,” says Susan Daly, co-chair of the New York Yacht Club’s Team Racing subcommittee. “It’s a natural fit for us given our history both with keelboat team racing and having run a team race worlds in 2005 in Vanguard 15 dinghies. This world championship is a great way to kick off a packed 2025 regatta calendar at Harbour Court.”

In addition to the Hinman Masters regatta—for which skippers must be 45 or older and crew must be 40 or older—the New York Yacht Club runs three other highly regarded team race events each summer: the Morgan Cup, the New York Yacht Club Grandmasters and the Women’s 2v2. The Club also created the Global Team Race Regatta and hosted it in 2018 and 2022. The Club expertly maintains a fleet of 22 Sonar sailboats that are reserved for team racing and the occasional fleet race regatta. In the four team-race regattas hosted by the New York Yacht Club, spinnakers are used. But the format for the world championship will mandate the jib-and-main-only configuration.  A dozen teams are anticipated, including one from the host New York Yacht Club. The remainder will be qualified through their member national authorities. For United States sailors hoping to compete, a qualifying regatta is anticipated in early 2025. The NOR for the 2025 Team Race World Championship can be found  here . The next edition will be held in August 2026 at the Gamla Stans Yacht Sällskap, Stockholm, Sweden, and is supported by the City of Stockholm and the Swedish Sailing Federation.

Teams that meet the eligibility requirements set out in the  Notice of Race  may submit a Request for Invitation by using this  link .

Alerts in effect, seafarers yacht club.

In 1945, Lewis T. Green made history in Anacostia Park when he created the Seafarers Yacht Club. the oldest African American yacht club in the country. The Yacht Club is still thriving to this day and was an early advocate for stewarding the river.

The Seafarers Yacht Club, organized in 1945 as the Seafarers Boat Club, and is the oldest African American yacht club in the United States. The clubhouse is located on the Anacostia River north of the John Philip Sousa Bridge (Pennsylvania Avenue, SE) and just south of the CSX Railroad bridge (across from the skating rink in Anacostia Park). The Seafarers Club was organized by Lewis T. Green, Sr., a wood carver and vocational arts teacher in the DC Public Schools. Green built boats as a hobby, and in his search for a place to dock one of his boats, he contacted the Department of the Interior about this site. Told that he should establish a boat club, he did so, but waited in vain for a response from the government. Eventually, with the help of Mary McLeod Bethune and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, he was able to rent the land for the club. The site originally was called Green's Boat Yard, and club members improved the marshy land and built docks and a clubhouse.

The club soon developed a commitment to boating safety and community service. In 1965 the club merged with the D.C. Mariners Boat Club. In 1985 the group began the Seafarers Yacht Club Annual Cleanup, which has grown into the annual Anacostia River Cleanup Day held each spring with hundreds of volunteers. Ongoing efforts clean the river continue every year with the hopes of a swimmable Anacostia for all to enjoy.

  24. Rowing at LYC

LYC Rowing is a program of the Lunenburg Yacht Club. We offer recreational coastal rowing on the waters of beautiful Mahone Bay, in a fleet of single and double coastal sculls. While similar to racing sculls, coastal sculls are a bit wider and hence more stable, making them better suited to salt-water rowing.
