Hi Amanda, The boat was great. The staff were too. Marin in particular. He was super knowledgeable and we felt in good hands. I'd say that maybe a very slight comment is that a Croatian crew and cooking etc is always going to be a little more "Eastern European" than, say an Italian crew. This is not to say it was lacking, just a little different and perhaps requires a little more communication. Thanks for everything. Was really a wonderful holiday I'd love to do a boat trip again. You will then be charged for additional costs, including fuel, provisions, marina fees, and other expenses in your advanced provisioning allowance (APA). For larger and newer superyachts, you can pay up to $500,000 per week, not including the APA .

What is an Advance Provisioning Allowance, or APA?

The Advanced Provisioning Allowance acts as a bank account and is designed to cover expenses that cannot be fixed in advance, such as food and drink, fuel, and berthing fees. The APA is typically around 25 to 35%. of the yacht charter fee and is paid before the charter commences. The captain is responsible for logging all APA expenses, and you can view the expenses at any time during your boat charter. Any funds left in the APA at the end of your charter holiday are immediately refunded to you.

A typical crew will include a captain, deck crew, interior crew, and a private chef. Additional crew may include a sommelier, personal fitness trainer, and beauty therapists. The exact roles of the crew will depend on the size and type of your vessel, but you can expect:

• A captain who is responsible for navigating the yacht and ensuring that all safety regulations are followed
• Deck crew who take care of the yacht’s exterior, including maintenance tasks such as cleaning, refueling the vessel, water sports activities, and more
• Interior crew who provide five-star guest services such as serving meals, drinks, cleaning and maintaining the interior, including staterooms, laundry, and more
• A chef who will prepare gourmet meals to your liking.

7 Expert Tips for First-Time Yacht Charters

Discover essential advice for first yacht charters to ensure a smooth and unforgettable adventure on the water. Read on for our 7 expert tips.

Embarking on your first yacht charter is an endearing and exciting adventure, but it can also make you feel nervous and intimidated. With the pressure of making so many right decisions—from choosing the yacht to planning your itinerary—it is easy to get lost in the details. I have been fortunate enough to charter yachts in various parts of the world, and through trial and error, I have learned what works and what doesn’t. 

My latest yacht charter holiday was in Croatia,  one of my favorite sailing destinations due to its top-notch infrastructure and congenial sailing conditions. You can  read more about Croatia before booking a trip. The British Virgin Islands are  another one of our favorite destinations. 

Are you considering your first yacht charter? Here is my top expert advice to help you confidently navigate the waters and avoid the same mistakes I made.

Choosing the Right Yacht 

Selecting a suitable vessel is the first step in planning a yacht charter. This decision is critical as it sets the tone for your entire experience. 

My first yacht charter experience was a disaster because I did not fully appreciate the importance of matching the yacht to my needs. My focus was more on the aesthetics than the practicalities, and as a result, I faced a few uncomfortable surprises. 

Avoid my mistake by considering how you plan to spend your time on the yacht. Are you looking for a boat with a lot of space to relax? A motor yacht with spacious cabins and multiple decks might be a good choice. Are you interested in the sailing experience? A sailing yacht might be a good fit. 

You can charter a motorized yacht, or perhaps you prefer a sailing yacht.

Don’t Plan a Strict Itinerary 

Planning an itinerary is essential , but you must leave ample room for flexibility . The freedom to explore at your own pace is the most appealing aspect of a yacht charter. 

When I first started planning, I got carried away. I tried to map every trip detail, so I packed too much into my itinerary. There wasn’t enough room for relaxation or spontaneous adventures. Hence, I advise having a rough itinerary but being open to change. 

Remember, the beauty of a yacht charter is that you can adapt your plans according to your mood, the weather, or a local recommendation you did not anticipate. Plus, don’t forget to leverage your crew’s local knowledge.

Keep your itinerary fluid so you can explore during your trip.

Understand Crew Roles 

The crew is integral in making or breaking your yacht charter experience. Hence, understanding their role is crucial. 

During my first charter, I failed to understand the importance of clear communication with the crew, leading to misunderstandings. 

Your crew is there to enhance your experience, but they cannot read your mind. It would help if you communicated your preferences to them so they can personalize the experience to your liking. 

Also, don’t hesitate to seek local recommendations from them. They have a wealth of local knowledge that can enrich your experience. 

Pack Light and Smart 

Another mistake I made during my first yacht charter was packing as if I were going to a luxury resort. Big mistake! 

Sure, the yacht cabins are comfortable, but they do not have the same storage space as hotel rooms. You will likely spend most of your time in casual clothing or swimwear. 

Focus on packing comfortable clothes and swimwear . If you plan to dine ashore, pack a few outfits for the evenings . Don’t forget essentials like a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen . 

I also recommend packing a light sweater or jacket for cooler evenings on the deck.

Budget for More than the Charter Fee 

Only after my first charter did I realize the charter fee was not the only cost involved. I was in for a nasty surprise, but you can learn from my mistake. 

So, the base charter fee is not your only expense. You must also budget for the APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance) , which typically covers food, fuel, drinks, and dockage fees . This is usually around 20 to 30% of the charter. Don’t worry—unused funds are usually returned after the trip ends. 

Gratuities for the crew are also customary and usually range from 10 to 20% of the charter fee. I recommend discussing tipping expectations with your preferred charter company before boarding. 

Lastly, you must budget for activities not covered by the yacht or if you wish to dine ashore. 

Respect the Etiquette and Rules of the Yacht 

I learned the unwritten etiquette and rules of yacht charter the hard way, but you don’t have to. For example, certain areas of the yacht are off-limits to guests for safety reasons. Ask the crew about these areas before you board. Also, it is customary to remove your shoes when on deck.

With the rise of expedition yachting in remote destinations such as Antarctica , Greenland, and Indonesia’s Raja Ampat, there’s a general belief that all corners of the globe are now accessible by private yacht charter.

“River cruising is the beneficiary of a larger travel trend in which luxury travelers are looking to do nothing,” Daniel Levine, director of New York consultancy Avant-Guide Institute , tells Robb Report . “By that, I mean they can visit multiple ports and soak up plenty of culture and history, all without changing hotels.”

This new fleet of river cruisers can access inland cities and remote stretches of countryside that are inaccessible to large oceangoing vessels. Plus, Levine says, there’s an added advantage to river travel: no seasickness.

One leader of the new set of purpose-built riverboats is Aqua Expeditions , the luxury river cruise operator whose first vessel, Aria Amazon , set sail on the Peruvian Amazon in 2011. Over a decade later, the fleet has grown to three river ships, none with more than 20 suites, cruising both the Amazon and the Mekong River in Vietnam and Cambodia, along with two oceangoing yachts in the Galapagos and Eastern Indonesia. 

“On my river ships, 30 percent of departures are now private buyouts, similar to traditional charters,” says founder Francesco Galli Zugaro. These clients, mainly multigenerational family groups or large gatherings of friends, are people who tend to vacation on yachts rather than the typical cruise ship crowd. Most of them have come to the riverboats, says Galli Zugaro, after chartering one of Aqua Expeditions’ two yachts.

The desire for off-the-beaten-track travel is fueling this new interest in riverboat charters, says Frédéric Crétin, a Monaco-based charter broker at superyacht brokerage Camper & Nicholsons . “We’ve had a surge in enquiries for the Peruvian Amazon, especially with Americans since it’s not too far from home,” says Crétin, who manages whole-boat bookings for the Aqua Expeditions fleet.

Heritage Line operates five traditionally styled ships along the upper and lower Mekong River and in Vietnam’s Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay. “Our vessels, particularly our small-ship sailing charters on Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay, have seen an increase in private stays,” says CEO John Tue Nguyen. “We now average 12 to 15 charters annually, including families, multi-generational bookings and VIP travelers.”

In Egypt, a gap in the market to showcase the country’s temples in a private, exclusive way, was behind the launch of the Nile River’s first luxury charter yacht in 2022, Berge . “Our clients are mostly royal families, politicians, celebrities, and athletes,” says Armen Kazazian of Kazazian Cruises , the yacht’s owner. “They don’t want to share the Egypt experience with hundreds of other people.”

The 180-foot, nine-cabin vessel has recently been joined by a sistership, the 196-foot, nine-cabin Arax . True to superyacht protocol, charters are secured with an official MYBA The Worldwide Yachting Association contract, and in the lead-up to the charter, a preference form is sent out to gather information on dietary preferences and daily routines to ensure everything is ready for your arrival. 

The differences also include having no water toys as one would on a conventional yacht charter. “But we overcome that with the destination and experiences, such as candlelit dinners on private islands,” says Kazazian. Maybe. But being restricted to a single route on a river is also fundamentally different than port-hopping along the Med or Caribbean.

Inland cruising has multiple benefits, insists Matthew Shollar of Transcend Cruises , Europe’s first charter-only, river-cruise company. “You’re not just in coastal locations and you can take your whole group off the boat to a spa, or go biking, or shopping,” Shollar says. “And a riverboat always docks close to your destination.”

In September 2025, the company’s first ship, the 443-foot Transcend , will launch, with a second identical vessel following in early 2026. Penned by Tillberg Design of Sweden, both are built to European riverboat specs but draw inspiration from superyachts for style and amenities, including a 2,600-square-foot indoor/outdoor fitness area that includes a gym, spa, and guest wellness facility. 

“The single most expensive piece of equipment on board is a hot tip from superyachts, a 144-inch C Seed unfolding television,” continues Shollar. “It’s a worthwhile investment for guests to enjoy everything from silent discos to movie nights on the sun deck.”

The company soft-launched Transcend Advance this summer to better examine the private market’s potential. It took over a five-star vessel from Riverside Luxury Cruises. One client, celebrating his 60th birthday party, had never considered a riverboat charter, but was lured by being able to host many more guests. “We designed a six-day itinerary that was flexible and unique,” says Kimberly Daley, Transcend’s chief revenue officer. “It enabled him and his friends to see chartering in a whole new way.”

Transcend will sail “the highest-demand European waterways,” including the Rhine, Danube, and Moselle, offering waterside access to historic cities like Trier, Budapest, and Belgrade.

But a second collection of smaller luxury barges is carrying charter to canals and smaller waterways. Both Belmond’s 128-foot Coquelicot and European Waterways’ Kir Royale launched in France’s Champagne region this year, with a max capacity of six and eight guests, respectively, and the possibility of whole-boat bookings. This combination of space, intimacy, pastoral views and access to exceptional vineyards can’t be replicated on oceangoing yachts.

While luxury riverboats are still a small niche compared to the larger world of superyacht charters, they offer another kind of cruising experience, one that combines slow-moving water with a relaxed lifestyle in some of the most scenic destinations on the planet.

What to expect in Antarctica : With a gleaming green hull, an imaginative interior and superior expedition credentials, 58.3-metre Pink Shadow has every feature one could dream of for an expedition yacht. Her interiors are inspired by an epic adventure film set in the Amazon basin and she even has a Habana room on board where guests can wind down with a cigar after a day on the ice. 

Pink Shadow is managed by Y.CO with a weekly charter rate starting from €510,000.

Stats: 126.2 metres, Lürssen , 2003, 12 guests, 45 crew

What to expect in Antarctica: Widely considered the first true explorer, 126-metre Octopus famously belonged to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen before being sold in 2021. Equipped with an ice-classed 1A steel hull, a flotilla of tenders and cool expedition features such as an ROV, Octopus is perhaps the most extravagant way to see Antarctica. 

Octopus is managed by Camper & Nicholsons with a weekly charter rate starting from $2,200,000.

Hanse Explorer

Stats: 47.8m, Fassmer , 2006, 12 guests, 15 crew

What to expect in Antarctica: Returning to the frozen south virtually every season, 48-metre Hanse Explorer is perhaps the most popular choice for Antarctic expeditions. Built in 2006 (and extensively refitted in 2021), she has a high commercial ice classification, refined interiors, and an onboard expedition team to enhance your experience. Accommodation on board is for 12 across seven comfortable cabins. Hanse Explorer is managed by EYOS Expeditions with a weekly charter rate starting from $245,000 per week.

Stats: 77.4m, IHC Verschure , 1974, 22 guests, 28 crew

What to expect in Antarctica: Having started life as a Dutch-built tug in 1974 with Class 1 ice-breaking credentials, 77.4-metre Legend is a seasoned pro of the Antarctic Peninsula. Capable of sleeping 22 guests, she features a commercial helideck, a submarine and a spa pool that can take 16 people. While she may be tough, her interior is more akin to that of a stately home. 

Legend is managed for charter by Y.CO with a weekly rate starting from €625,000.
