Tarte Chrome Paint Shadow Pot in Top Yacht and Park Ave Princess Review and Swatches

I waited until the very last day to order something during the Sephora $20 off $50 purchase promo and these beauties are why. I was holding out hope that the new Tarte Chrome Paint Shadow Pots would appear on Sephora’s site during the promotion and my wishes were granted. I saw these in a few YouTube videos and I was totally blown away by the pigmentation and high impact shine. I haven’t felt this drawn to a product in a long time.

The Tarte Chrome Paint Shadow Pot ($22 US) is a mirror effect loose (but not that loose) pigment eyeshadow that gives the high sheen of a cream or gloss but in a powder formula. These aren’t messy at all. You don’t need brushes. These work best by using the warmth of your finger to help the formula melt and blend into the skin. They have 80% pearl pigment so they have incredible colour payoff and shine. So insanely gorgeous. These are the perfect lid shades for an eye-catching look.

There are 6 shades available and I opted for the two shades I considered most “wearable”.

Top Yacht is the most perfect champagne shimmer for the lid and inner corner. Stunning. Stunning. STUNNING.

Park Ave Princess is a breathtaking metallic bronze. This is the most gorgeous bronze shadow I have ever seen. This one is even more metallic than Top Yacht, believe it or not. This makes for them most stunning warm bronze eye. I love wearing it paired with darker shadows for a bronze smokey eye, or with subtler tones for a warm glowy bronze look.

I highly recommend these if you want a full impact metallic shine in your shadows. I recommend wearing a good eyeshadow primer to ensure these last without fading and creasing and make sure you actually tap of your finger (like a brush, I know that sounds crazy!) because they are a loose powder formula and very densley pigmented they are a bit crumbly so you’ll end up with extra on your finger that can create fallout.

My 5 stunning Tarte Chrome Paint Shadow Pots

I recently made a purchase at the Tarte website during their sale. In this order, I got some more of the Tarte Chrome Paint Shadow Pots that I have been eyeing for a while- unleashed and martini.

They first came out with these stunning eyeshadow pots couple years ago and I’m still loving them and expanding my collection till these days!

This time, I got the limited edition shade “unleashed” (metallic purple) and the permanent shade “martini” (metallic bronzed olive). I’ve been loving purple shadows a lot although I don’t wear them very often. But lately I’m really into olive green shades since I first saw the reviews of the Charlotte Tilbury’s eyeshadow quad “The Rebel” (it seems to be the same and repromoted as “Green Lights”) online! I believe olive-y and golden-y greens are on trend this year.

This is the collection I have currently. They are beautiful!

Here are some swatches (the pictures were all taken under natural indoor lighting in daytime).

These Tarte Chrome Paint Shadow pots are very metallic and opaque, but they are quite thick on the lid. I recommend smoothing them on the lid couple times to make sure they stick and prevent massive fallout.

Most of the these paint shadow pots came pressed hard into the pot, however, I did have experience that they came loose in the pot and it was pretty messy when I first opened them. So make sure to be prepared when you open them!

Comparing Tarte Chrome Paint Shadow pot with Essence Melted Chrome Eyeshadow

Looking at some of these shades, they remind me of the Melted Chrome Eyeshadow from Essence. As a side note, I don’t think we talk about these Essence shadows enough as they are as gorgeous as high end eyeshadows, but are very affordable (they are occasionally on sale in Ulta’s website)! I highly recommend anyone of you to check them out.

The Essence shadows are more light-weighted and tend to have less fallout on the lid than the Tarte Chrome paint shadows. However, if you want more opaque and intense eye look, I think the Tarte ones are for you.

Final Thoughts

I really like these shadow pots from Tarte. They have a substantial texture that I can easily pick them up with my finger or a natural hair brush (in contrast, even natural hair brush can barely pick up the Essence shadow). They are also quite opaque and metallic in just one swipe (same for the Essence shadows). I don’t notice any creasing (on a typical monolid for Asians) or fading on me for 5+ hours of wear before I take them off. I have rather normal skin around my lid area. The only downside I can think of is that, they can be quite thick and crumble easily if layered. But they are not particularly easy to fall out.

However, I have previously purchased the other limited edition Chrome Paint Shadow pots before, in the shades “Wild at heart” and “Paradise found”. Not only did the two shades look very similar on my lid or in arm swatches, they definitely feel different than the permanent versions in a negative way to me. They are more crumbly and are not pressed inside the pot. So it was pretty messy to use them. Besides, the limited edition ones are having more fallout over time of wear. I eventually returned them.

Overall, I recommend these Tarte Chrome Paint Shadow pots and I rate them as:

• Texture: 9/10
• Color payoff: 10/10
• Longevity on eyelid: 9/10
• Shade variety: 6.5/10
• Quality consistency among shades: 8/10 (some newer “limited edition” shadows are less substantial than the permanent ones)
• Affordability: 7/10

Tarte chrome paint shadow pots (review & swatches).

Sometime last year tarte released their Chrome Paint Shadow Pots and I was instantly smitten with the shade Fire Dancer (that deep metallic burgundy-red you see on the left). That shade in particular was so intriguing to me – in the pot it looked more pink than red (which isn’t my style), but in swatches it was this molten fiery lava shade that just set my heart on fire!

So when I received a package of these Chrome Paint Shadow Pots to try out, I was over the moon! And then also… suddenly nervous. While I do use pigments from time to time, they’re not generally my favourite kind of eyeshadow because my god are they ever messy. These Chrome Paints are no exception, but once you see how the colours play out, you may want to dive in headfirst and play around with them too!

Each pot contains 3 grams (0.11 ounces) of product – which is roughly double what you would expect to get in a traditional pressed eyeshadow pan. I’m glad there’s so much product in there, because the price point is a bit up there  ( $27 CAD / $22 USD ) for a single shadow. That being said, you’re getting a heck of a foiled eyeshadow pigment out of these… just check out the swatches!

These were swatched (as per usual) with a cotton bud, but the brand does indicate these work best with your fingertip in order to melt the product into your skin. I didn’t read that tidbit until after I’d swatched them, but I can confirm that using something to “melt/crush” the product (so to speak) works a lot better than something dry. If you apply them dry, you end up with a few chunks (as you can see above) that need a bit of smoothing out. For all the eye looks you’ll see below, I ended up wetting my brush before applying the shadow to my lids and I found that worked very, very well in order to smooth out the pigment. That being said, these are metallic right out of the gates and don’t necessarily need the extra oomph from a wet brush.

For this look I opted for Park Ave Princess on the lid with Top Yacht on the inner corner. Top Yacht is unbelievably reflective. I could probably also use it as a cheek highlight because the reflection is incredible!

Closed eye shot with the same colours as above so you can see the texture a bit better. It’s quite foiled (and my eyelids are a touch crinkly) but overall it’s quite a smooth application with a wet brush.

The next look involves Martini all over the lid with Steel The Show on the outer corner and through the crease. I thought Steel The Show would be more grey overall, but it’s got a beautiful grey cast to it. Martini is one of those darker golden-olive shades – wonderful as a lid shade.

And my favourite? No surprise here, but it’s Fire Dancer (I even love the name!). This colour is basically all of my makeup hopes and dreams rolled into one fiery shade of wonder. This colour is EVERYTHING to me! It’s the only colour I used all over my lid, crease and lower lash line (I have a glitter on the inner corner) and the end result is breathtaking. If there’s one shade I’d urge you to pick up the most in this collection – it’s this one!

Final Thoughts

The tarte Chrome Paint Shadow Pots are definitely a bit messy, and slightly finicky but oh-so-worth it. (To cause the least amount of mess, I’d scoop my brush into the product and plop it into the lid, wet my brush, then smush the shadow into the lid of the product and apply it directly to my lid.)

Each colour is beautifully pigmented and has a beautiful foiled/metallic finish. While most of the shades are fairly neutral, the ones that stood out to me the most were definitely Fire Dancer and Pot of Gold . I experienced no creasing after 12+ hours of wear on all shades and each of them had solid opacity on the lid and didn’t require constant layering. These are a definite winner!

Yeah they’re stunning!

I always WANT to use pigments, but then I’m like ugghhhh it’s such a mess and bother to go through the hassle of it all.

Fire Dancer is seriously unreal. I hope they release more shades like it!

I wish they weren’t packed inside glass. I carry 6 shades in my kit and it gets really heavy with everything else. Do you think they will dry out if I transfer them to a regular eyeshadow pan and put them in my palette?

Oh interesting… I’m not sure to be honest. You could probably put them in sealed plastic containers and not worry about it, but I have no idea how emollient these would stay in an open pan. I understand how glass packaging gets heavy though! That’d be a lot to carry when you add it up over many products!

Did you use a particular primer with these? Thanks for the review – wasn’t quite sure how to use mine before I found it! Ebony x
