2 Crew Members Under Investigation In Sicily Yacht Sinking
As the investigation into the sinking of the superyacht off the coast of Sicily broadens, Italian prosecutors are now scrutinizing the actions of two other crew members in addition to the captain of the vessel.
On Wednesday, prosecutors placed crew members Tim Parker Eaton and Matthew Griffiths under investigation, according to The New York Times . Eaton was in charge of the yacht’s engine room, while Griffiths was on lookout duty the night the yacht sank.
When someone is placed under investigation in Italy, there is no guarantee that charges will follow.
The Bayesian, a 184-foot British-flagged yacht deemed unsinkable by its ship maker Perini Navi, went down in a storm off the coast of Sicily on Aug. 19, killing one crew member and six passengers, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah.
The yacht carried 22 people — 10 crew members and 12 guests who were there celebrating Lynch’s acquittal in June on all charges in a fraud case that followed the sale of his company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011.
Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived by escaping on a lifeboat and were rescued by the sailboat Sir Robert Baden Powell. It remains unclear how the Bayesian sank, especially as the nearby Baden Powell remained largely unscathed despite the storm.
According to The Associated Press , Giovanni Costantino, head of the Italian Sea Group, which owns Perini Navi, said the yacht’s sinking was likely caused by human error.
“The ship sank because it took on water. From where, the investigators will say,” he told Italian state media, per the AP.
Captain James Cutfield is facing a manslaughter inquiry to determine whether his actions caused the shipwreck, Cutfield’s lawyer Giovanni Rizzuti told the Times on Tuesday. Prosecutors interviewed Cutfield this week, but he exercised his right to remain silent and is “very distressed,” according to Rizzuti.
This week, nine of the 10 crew members, including those under investigation, left Sicily, sources told the Times. In Italy, people under investigation are not prohibited from leaving the country.

Essex Police rescue two people from stricken yacht after sudden storm
An Essex Police Marine Unit rescued two people earlier this month when their yacht got into difficulties off the coast of Clacton after a sudden storm whipped up.
Roy Harris and his partner Caroline Wilson were sailing back to the River Crouch from Kent on Sunday 25 August when the storm hit.
With his yacht, the Samphire, taking on water and its sail rope torn, Mr Harris radioed a PAN-PAN message to alert nearby boats and emergency services that their vessel had an urgent problem.
Sergeant Alex Southgate, PC John Perry and special constable Scott Mccabe were on Operation Wave-Breaker patrols in the force rib Sentinel when they picked up the distress call.
Working with the Dover Coastguard Operations Centre, they located the 40ft-yacht near an off-shore windfarm, four miles off Clacton.
Due to the weather conditions and the yacht’s damaged sail, the rescue journey took more than two hours in rough seas – it would usually take 45 minutes in normal conditions.

Feadship has announced that 10-year-old luxury yacht ARCHIMEDES has returned to cruising following her refit and upgrades at the shipyard’s facilities in the Netherlands.
Luxury yacht ARCHIMEDES has retained much of her interior and exterior styling from Studio de Voogt and John Munford Design respectively, with a new coat of paint to freshen up her cool white superstructure.
Other exterior changes included new teak for the stern swim platform, a new antifouling system and maintenance carried out on the gangplank, side hull door, tender lift and stern platform door.
Inside, guests will notice a newly painted floor within the sundeck interior, all AV systems replaced and upgraded and new upholstery and furniture for the shared social areas and each guest cabin.
The engine room had maintenance work completed on the shaft line and engine supports as well as the seawater cooling systems and stabilisers, in addition to a new generator and upgrades to the heating and air conditioning system, water-maker and fuel oil separator.
A pair of 2x CAT 3516B DI-TA 1492 kW engines @ 1600 rpm give the powerful ARCHIMEDES a top speed of 16 and a cruising speed of 12 knots.
There are only four en-suite cabins aboard this 68m/223ft superyacht, providing each occupant with plenty of room on board on long excursions.
Her professional crew of 10 is now returning to cruising the world’s seas, already having travelled 200,000 nautical miles since her launch in 2008.
Captain Christopher Walsh commented of her new appearance and upgrades:
“The project was finished on time and on budget. This is exactly what one expects from Feadship… It’s been a pleasure to bring ARCHIMEDES home to the Netherlands for this work, and the three months we’ve spent here brought back great memories of the original build back in the mid-noughties. The yacht is now in perfect condition for the owner and his guests to embark on another decade of exploring the oceans. Our recent expedition into the High Arctic has certainly whetted everyone’s appetite for more adventures.”
Future Feadship refits and upgrades will take place at Feadship Refit & Services, a new division of the luxury yacht builder to ensure that Feadship Owners retain the same high-quality performance and appearance that the yachts received during their initial construction.

The arrival of a £75million superyacht off Penzance has turned plenty of heads.
The Archimedes, which was recently moored in Falmouth , arrived off the harbour in Penzance on Monday.
The huge yacht belongs to US billionaire James Simons.
Mr Simons, 80, was born in Massachusetts and previously worked as a maths teacher and Cold War code breaker.
According to Forbes he is worth an estimated £16billion and is the founder of New York City-based hedge fund firm Renaissance Technologies.
Mr Simons founded the firm in 1982 and remained at the head of the company before announcing his retirement in January 2010.
Despite formally stepping down from his duties, Mr Simons continues to hold the position of non-executive chairman.
Prior to Renaissance Technologies, Mr Simons worked for many years as a mathematics professor at Stony Brook University in New York.
The yacht was built at the Dutch builder Royal Van Lent and delivered to Mr Simons in 2008. It is not known if Mr Simons is aboard the Archimedes, though the yacht is not believed to be available for charter.
In 2006 Financial Times described Mr Simons as the “world’s smartest billionaire” after being named on the paper’s ‘alternative rich list’.
Take a look inside The Archimedes
The vessel is 68 metres long - much longer than an Olympic-class swimming pool of 50m
Its beam, the widest point, is 12.3 meters - the length of double decker bus
It can be crewed by a 18-strong team and house 16 guests
This is over 8 cabins, comprising a master suite, 4 double cabins and 3 twin cabins.
Her twin Caterpillar engines give it an astounding 4,000 BHP - almost four times the BHP of a Bugatti Veyron, the fastest car on the road
It gives it a top speed of 16 knots, and a cruising speed of 12 knots
With its 171,000 litre fuel tanks it has a range of 6,000 nautical miles.
It weighs 1,100 tonnes - the same as 183 fully-grown African elephants
The boat can store 53,400 litres of fresh water on board
It is estimated the standard fuel usage for a 71m yacht is 500 litres an hour, meaning an average of £265m is spent just on petrol every year
It can cost around £350,000 a year just in dockage fees
The crew will command a salary of around £1.5m and the boat will generally need £1m spent on maintenance
To insure a super yacht like this it will set you back about £240,000 a year.

Wherever superyacht Archimedes ports it generates a huge amount of interest, for obvious reasons.
The sailing behemoth, worth £75m often towers over anything else in the harbour and draws in big crowds, as it did when it visited Bristol Harbour in July.
But what does a boat worth £75m look like on the inside?
Well it turns out, shockingly, it's pretty lush.
Everyone's heads have been turned by the huge boat that moored in Bristol over that weekend.
The ship is owned by billionaire former hedge fund manager James 'Jim' Simons and it arrived in the city.
And while it has gathered quite the crowd outside, and a huge amount of reaction on social media , few have been able to catch a glimpse of what the floating palace looks like on board.
What's on board the Archimedes?
To start with it has an ice-strengthened Corinthian blue hull so it can be sailed in any weather condition and with ultra-modern stabilization system which reduces roll motion effect and results in a smoother more enjoyable cruising experience underway.
The luxury yacht is also fitted with 'at anchor stabilisers' which work at anchor, increasing on-board comfort when the yacht is stationary, particularly in rough waters.
On the large sun deck, guests can enjoy a masterfully crafted marble mosaic hot tub, bar and entertainment area, enclosed gym and lots of dining and social areas.
The panoramic views are uninterrupted by tenders and toys on deck due to dedicated wells, lifts and a large garage below deck.
Grant piano and helipad
Comfortable furniture and even a grand piano are in the main lounge as is a wood-burning fireplace, the first Feadship to have one.
The full-beam master bedroom is divided into various relaxation areas, consisting of large central bed and a lady’s writing desk which was handmade for the owner’s wife.
The bathrooms are Greek-inspired and showcase artisan mosaic marble floors in all six en-suite staterooms.
And if you get fed up of slumming it on-board, the boat has a helipad as well as two smaller boats attached to make a quick and glamorous getaway.
The Archimedes - in numbers
The vessel is 68 metres long - much longer than an Olympic-class swimming pool of 50m

The story behind the superyacht and its owner
It's American owner Simons is 80 years old and was as a maths teacher and Cold War code-breaker before setting up New York City-based hedge fund firm Renaissance Technologies.
In 2006, Financial Times described Simons as the “world’s smartest billionaire” after being named on the paper’s ‘alternative rich list’.
Simons, who also owns a private jet, had an estimated net worth of $18 billion in 2017, according to Forbes .
He is also a philanthropist, donating vast amounts of money to scientific research and to improve math programs in public schools.
In 2014, the New York Times did a profile piece on the 80-year-old - referring to him as ‘the billionaire mathematician’.
According to reports online, Simons shuns the limelights and rarely gives interviews.
Superyacht Archimedes causes a stir in Bristol
In an interview with Seed Magazine in 2006, he explained: “I was on Lou Dobbs for about a microsecond.
“He was doing a piece on teaching, and they interviewed a number of folks. But I’ve never been on TV in any meaningful way. And I don’t really have a desire for that.
“There’s a wonderful quote in Animal Farm. The source of all wisdom in that book is Benjamin the donkey. He observes at one point that ‘God gave me a tail to keep off the flies. But I’d rather of had no tail and no flies.’ So, that’s kind of the way I feel about publicity.”

Trader Assets: Jim Simons' Archimedes Yacht
Greek mathematician Archimedes was considered one of the leading scientists in classical antiquity, credited with anticipating modern calculus, analysis and deriving an accurate approximation of pi.
To many in finance, Jim Simons is regarded as a modern-day mathematical divinity, regarded amongst the smartest of the world’s billionaires for his role in founding New York-based Renaissance Technologies.
With estimated assets under management of $110 billion, Simons created one of the world’s leading funds following his career as a maths teacher at Stony Brook University. Forbes estimate that Simons himself has a net worth of over $21 billion.
8 Top Philanthropic Traders
But at 80-years-old, Simons has long since retired from the top job at Renaissance, although he continues to be named as its non-exec chair. Instead of monitoring the markets, Simons now prefers to spend his time divided between philanthropic projects (mostly related to mathematics and scientific educational grants) and relaxing on his yacht. The 68-metre long vessel known as… The Archimedes.
Its striking blue hull was recently spotted off the south coast of the UK, was built in 2008 by Dutch shipyard Feadship. Weighing over 1,000 tonnes, the yacht can host up to 16 guests in eight cabins and features a dining room, a study, an outdoor pool and even a piano.
It all requires a 10-strong crew with a combined salary of around £1.5m a year. Annual maintenance on top of that is estimated at a further £1m. Insurance alone is likely to cost around a quarter of a million, with dockage fees around the same. With estimated fuel ‘economy’ of 500 litres an hour, petrol costs are likely to run into the hundreds of millions.
Trading Legends: Jim Simons
But they say that money buys power and that is certainly the case when it comes to The Archimedes - with twin Caterpillar engines that boast over 4,000 BHP. For comparison, the Lotus Evija - recently crowned the world’s most powerful car - manages ‘just’ 2,000 BHP. It all means that Simons’ ship cuts through the ocean at a top speed of 16 knots, at a range of 6,000 nautical miles.
If you like the sound of that and want to make the legendary fund manager an offer he can’t refuse, you’ll be expected to stump up at least the $100m it is currently valued at…
