Edwin Arrieta Arteaga, uno de los cirujanos más reconocidos del departamento de Córdoba, fue asesinado a comienzos de agosto en la isla de Koh Phangan, Tailandia, por Daniel Sancho, hijo de un actor español.

Hasta el momento, se sigue investigando lo sucedido, pero mucho se ha hablado de la relación que tenían Sancho y Arrieta.

De hecho, Infobae señaló que expertos indican que pudo “tratarse de una práctica denominada ‘ yachting’ o ‘ gay for pay’ , que se trata específicamente de un hombre heterosexual que sostiene relaciones sexuales con otra persona de su mismo sexo a cambio de dinero”. La psicóloga Íngrith Iza le dijo a RCN Noticias que es “una especie de prostitución masculina” .

Entre tanto, la psicóloga española Claudia Kosler le dijo a RCN que “una cosa es el vínculo sexoafectivo y otra cosa es la orientación sexual. Una persona se puede definir como hetero y tener actos sexuales con personas del mismo sexo. Es distinto con quién se tiene una práctica sexual y con quién se establece un vínculo afectivo”.

Asimismo, añadió que “Sancho está defendiendo su lugar como hombre hetero, pues cuando se pone en duda la orientación sexual de un hombre que no se define como gay o bisexual, se escuda en ‘soy hetero y tengo novia’”.

Últimos mensajes de Daniel Sancho para sus amigos antes de matar a Edwin Arrieta

Recientemente, salieron a la luz los mensajes que Sancho les envió a algunos amigos, luego de cometer el crimen que ahora lo tiene tras las rejas en una cárcel de la isla tailandesa Koh Samui, en espera de los resultados de las investigaciones y el juicio.

“Siento que estéis teniendo que ser de esas personas que sufren esto”, escribió en una de esas comunicaciones.

“Es verdad, la he liado”, expresó en otro mensaje, en tanto que en otro también les pidió a sus amigos: “Olvidaros de mí, estoy bien” .

Como lo ha expresado a la Policía, Sancho le aseguró a otro amigo que, en esta historia, él era la víctima.

“Me estaba amenazando tanto a mí como a mi familia. Estaba defendiendo mi vida y la de todos los que quiero ”, aseguró el chef.

En otro mensaje, el español da a entender que todavía hay mucho más por conocer, pues también escribió lo siguiente: “Algún día sabrán toda la verdad” .

¿Había un tercero ayudando a Daniel Sancho?

En medio de las investigaciones que adelantan las dos familias, la de Edwin y la de Daniel, surgió una pregunta que alertó a las autoridades tailandesas: ¿Daniel Sancho contó con ayuda de otra persona para desmembrar a Edwin Arrieta?

La pregunta la hizo Ramón Chipirrás, un criminólogo y abogado que contrató la familia de Sancho para investigar este suceso que conmocionó el país y parte del mundo. “Alguien más ha intervenido en esto, por tiempo y porque tenemos acceso a cierta información que nos dice que estos restos que han encontrado los sanitarios no los podía haber hecho una sola persona”, dijo Chipirrás a medios internacionales.

El abogado aseguró que “hay determinados factores” que dan indicios de que tuvo ayuda inicial de alguien . Entre esas, las partes encontradas en un Kayak en el mar y una factura “que se encontró en la bolsa de basura”.

Daniel Sancho estará detenido hasta que la justicia tome una decisión sobre el caso, dijo el viernes a la AFP el responsable de la prisión. El hombre de 29 años de edad se encuentra en una prisión en la turística isla de Koh Samui, en un régimen de aislamiento como parte del dispositivo para evitar la expansión de la covid-19 entre los internos.

“Será puesto en detención (ordinaria) el 17 de agosto y permanecerá allí hasta que el tribunal haya decidido el caso”, dijo Watcharapong Boonsaior, jefe de la prisión de Koh Samui.

La ley tailandesa establece un plazo máximo de 84 días hasta el inicio del juicio desde que el preso entra en un régimen ordinario de detención, con lo que este debería empezar, como máximo, a principios de noviembre .

Daniel Sancho , hijo del actor español Rodolfo Sancho, contó a la policía tailandesa que mató y descuartizó al cirujano de 44 años Edwin Arrieta . Afirmó ser un «rehén» de la víctima, con la que mantenía encuentros sexuales esporádicos desde hacía un año, cuando se conocieron por Instagram.

Sancho, según su versión, quiso cortar lazos con Arrieta, pero el médico colombiano le habría amenazado con difundir imágenes de ambos de carácter íntimo y hundir la imagen pública de su familia: «Cada vez que intentaba alejarme de él, me amenazaba».

El chef español, que admitió las relaciones sexuales con la víctima, insistió ante las autoridades tailandesas que no era homosexual. Recalcó que tenía novia y que se iba a encontrar con ella en Tailandia. De hecho, le mandó un mensaje después de confesar el crimen. «No va a esperarme y tampoco debe hacerlo. Que sea feliz».

Actualmente se encuentra en prisión en Tailandia después tras haber  confesado   el asesinato de Edwin Arrieta Arteaga . El joven contó a la policía que mató y descuartizó al cirujano de 44 años. Sancho se autoinculpó una segunda vez y afirmó ser un "rehén" de la víctima, con la que mantenía  encuentros sexuales esporádicos  desde hacía un año, cuando se conocieron por Instagram.

Al parecer, el joven español quiso cortar lazos con Arrieta, pero este le habría amenazado con  difundir imágenes  sobre sus encuentros sexuales, para  hundir la imagen pública  de su familia. "Cada vez que intentaba alejarme de él, me amenazaba", afirmaba el presunto autor.

A pesar de que Sancho admitió el  vínculo sexual  con la víctima, siempre ha asegurado que él no era homosexual . Hizo hincapié en el hecho de que tenía novia y tenía pensado encontrarse con ella en Tailandia, algo que recalcó a las autoridades tailandesas. De hecho, le mandó un mensaje después de confesar el crimen. "No va a esperarme y tampoco debe hacerlo. Que sea feliz", declaró.

'Yachting' o 'gay-for-pay

Dentro de la confusión que envuelve el caso, no queda claro cuál era la relación real entre el asesino confeso y su víctima. Muchos se han preguntado por la verdadera  orientación sexual de Sancho . Sin embargo, el vínculo sexual que les unía no responde tanto a esta cuestión, pues se trata de algo que va más allá de eso. Lo que compartían Sancho y Arrieta sería una práctica sexual llamada ' yachting ' o ' gay-for-pay '.

Este término se fraguó aludiendo al popular ' pay-per-view ' (PPV) de las televisiones privadas. El  pago por visión  de toda la vida, lo que ahora todo el mundo conoce como los  contenidos bajo demanda . El 'yachting' o 'gay por pago' se refiere a las personas heterosexuales que reciben dinero por tener relaciones con personas de su mismo sexo, es simplemente una transacción económica. Es decir, un tipo de prostitución masculina en el que no importan ni el género ni la orientación sexual.

Daniel Sancho ha pasado su tercera noche en prisión en Tailandia, tras haber confesado el asesinato y descuartizamiento del cirujano plástico de origen colombiano, Edwin Arrieta. Fue el hijo de Rodolfo Sancho quien acudió a la policía a anunciar la desaparición de su amigo y posteriormente para revelarse como autor del crimen. En su defensa, afirmó sentirse "rehén" de Arrieta, como si estuviera en "una jaula de cristal". Además, el joven hostelero aseguró que mantenía encuentros sexuales esporádicos con la víctima desde hacía un año, cuando se conocieron por Instagram.

Asumiendo Sancho que no era homosexual, se ha determinado que lo que compartían Arrieta y él era una práctica sexual que se conoce como "yachting" o "gay-for-pay". ¿En qué consiste? El "yachting" o "gay por pago" se refiere a las personas heterosexuales que reciben dinero por tener relaciones con personas de su mismo sexo. El concepto también es conocido como prostitución masculina.

All You Need is Love: LGBTQIA+ Couples Share their Experiences of Life on Board

The industry has room for everyone — these LGBTQIA+ couples share their experiences making their way in yachting...

While Pride month was officially in June , we believe that it should be celebrated year-round. So let’s turn the spotlight on six couples in the LGBTQIA+ community to learn about their stories and experiences — how they met, the highs of working with their partners, working apart, and to see what words of wisdom they’d impart.

For anyone who feels like they don’t fit into the traditional yacht crew mold, we’re here to demonstrate that the yachting industry welcomes anyone as long as they work as hard and have the same adventurous streak we’re looking for when building a dream team. To quote the ultimate Queen RuPaul, “Everybody say LOVE!”

Sharing Milestones

Capt. Anna Strang met First Mate Maggie Kerr when they were both working on a round-the-world science expedition vessel, researching micro-plastics in the oceans. Not your average yacht gig then.

Having worked together ever since, their two-year relationship sometimes feels like five. “Working in the industry is a serious lifestyle adjustment. It can take you to some of the most incredible places around the world and give you some of the most unique experiences,” says Kerr. “Having your partner right there literally by your side allows you to share the highs with them and ensure you have someone there to get you through the lows. You get to go through all of these significant milestones in your relationship together in settings you couldn’t even imagine, like swimming with hammerhead sharks in the Galapagos or weathering a severe storm off Easter Island.”

When asked about challenges they’ve faced, the first mate explained that it’s mostly about finding their positions on the same vessel. “Couple jobs are typically advertised as ‘captain and chef’ or ‘deckhand and stewardess,’ with the assumed female role as chef or stewardess,” Kerr says.  “We are both deck crew with Ocean Master 200gt tickets and found it nearly impossible to find couples positions advertised for two deck crew as females.” But they continue to break that glass ceiling and are now on their second yacht as captain and mate.

LGBTQIA+ Representation

Chief Stew Inge Blum met her partner Second Stew Paige Hanekom in South Africa and they lived together in the Cape Winelands for more than three years. When Hanekom graduated university, they took the plunge and headed to Mallorca to join the yachting industry. They’ve now been together more than seven years and are still going strong. They work together on a motor yacht and have done so for three of their four years in yachting. After their first season apart, Blum scored a chief stew gig on a new-build motor yacht. “As luck would have it and with the universe in our favor, the captain at the time sent Inge a message: ‘You wouldn’t by any chance know of any potential second stews that you would like to work with?’ Right time, and right place! We know how hard it is for couples to get jobs on the same vessel, let alone same-sex couples, let alone in the same department!”

Hanekom also highlighted how wonderful it is to be able to share the adventures with your partner. “When you are feeling down, you are fortunate enough to have your partner to confide in,” she says. “On another note, we have often been commended and thanked for being an openly gay couple within the industry. Social media is lacking queer yachting content, so putting out some sort of representation by just being us has certainly been a ‘high’ for our time in the industry.”

When asked about difficulties they’ve overcome as a same-sex couple in the industry, Hanekom explained they’ve been the victims of “banter” on more than one occasion. “We felt we had a lot to prove working in the same department together, as we had been given this wonderful opportunity,” she says. “Fortunately, we are meticulous with our work and balance each other’s strengths and weaknesses out like no other and run a spectacular interior together. We have been able to prove that we are great at what we do and being a same-sex couple in the same department has only helped the vessel succeed in the past three years.”

Yachting is Becoming More Liberal

Capt. Peter met his husband Blair, a purser/interior manager, when they worked together in the past. Becoming close friends, the romance began to blossom seven years ago…and they tied the knot five and a half years ago.

Although they’ve worked together previously, they’ve found their careers have pushed them in different directions, but they still see plenty of each other on rotation. They hold the crown for becoming the first gay couple to marry in yachting (as far as we know). “I’m learning all the time about being in a relationship, being humble, being kind, and also accepting that labeling all of the shelves in our house might not be as high of a priority for him as it is for me!” Blair says.

Noting that the world has changed in the 12 years he’s been involved in yachting, Blaire comments how there’s far less stigma. “The general age of crew is much younger and so this allows more liberal viewpoints, and the average age of captains has come down by the sheer volume of newly minted Masters; this allows for more liberal viewpoints from the other end of the ladder as well.”

Prioritizing Your Relationship

Deck/Chaseboat captain Laura Mound met her partner Nicola Small, a deckie/crew cook, when Nic was dating her step-sibling. They became friends first, then when that relationship ended, fell in love. They’ve been together three and a half years but have only just landed their first couple’s role, doing the long-distance thing before that. That element has been the challenge for them, but as Small explains, “By constantly making each other and our relationship a priority, we managed to come out the other side so much stronger than when we started.”

Making Distance Work

Chief Stew Cantleigh Groenewald and Chef Beth Mason met in Malta more than five years ago, when the yachts they were working on docked side by side for the winter. Sadly, they’ve struggled to find work together over the years but even with long distance, “You get to share this adventure with the person you love and what could be better than that!” Groenewald says, adding that “Long distance is a serious thing and you have to be willing to do the work! We have gone almost six months of not seeing each other, which is absurd in land-based life. We have also been disappointed so many times with jobs that we both matched perfectly for but as soon as it was known we were a couple or same-sex couple when the position was indeed ‘couples friendly’ has been extremely disheartening.”

And rightly so; surely love is love, however you look at it. And if a candidate and their partner fit the bill professionally, why should their sexuality or anything else come into it?

Making Waves as a Couple

Jenny Matthews and Natasha Ambrose — both chief officers on board — are the founders of She of the Sea (SOTS). They’re a regular pair of glass-ceiling smashers that represent the LGBTQIA+ community.

SOTS was how they met: when Matthews posted on the “Girls on Deck” Facebook page to see if there were other female chief mates out there (she’d been told there were only 10 and couldn’t believe it), Ambrose was one of the first to reach out. They became friends, regularly chatting about all things yachting, and when Matthews’ SOTS project started gaining momentum, they finally met up at an organized gathering; “the rest is history.” They work together most days on SOTS, as well as LegaSea (their mentoring program), and when they go to sea, they try to go together. “This can be a challenge as we are both chief officers,” says Matthews. “We have been very fortunate that these opportunities do come up more now but [I] remember in the beginning, this was a real challenge.”

When talking about the positives, Matthews says, “Being connected to someone that feels and represents home in an industry that can isolate people from loved ones is amazing. For me, I have enjoyed the industry in a whole new way now that I have someone to share all the amazing highs, and of course the lows with,” she says, referring to the boss, the weather, and the world. “Having someone who knows you so well and who can give real, unbiased views on situations is also pretty amazing as that can be hard to come by, especially at sea.”

Advice for Incoming LGBTQIA+ crew

“The industry is evolving,” Matthews says. “On the majority of boats, orientation is embraced, and if you find yourself [on] one that is not yet with the program, leave. Life is too short to spend your days in spaces where you can’t embody your full, wonderful self. Also, find the LGBTQ+ communities that are growing!”

“Be unapologetically yourself! Do not let anyone try [to over]shadow who you are and who you love! Yachting is an incredible opportunity to ‘start fresh,’ so do it as the truest version of you. Be honest from the get-go about your sexuality and take up space,” Hanekom says. “Yachting can sometimes be lonely and isolating but know that you are not alone and there are so many of us out [at] sea waving our flags in support of you.”

Should you come across any bigots who make you feel uncomfortable, Hanekom suggests keeping Michelle Obama’s words in mind: “When they go low, we go HIGH.” If it does get to a point where you really feel ostracized and vulnerable, inform your superior, she says. “If nothing happens from there, then remove yourself from the situation and try [to] get placed elsewhere. Your mental health and heart [are] worth way more than being in an uncomfortable situation during long and strenuous hours of work in confined spaces.”

“Be brave, be open, and be proud of who you are,” Groenewald says. “If you feel you have to conceal a big part of you, then it is not the boat for you. It can be hard and there are more close-minded crew than you’d think (even though we live in a diverse, multi-cultural industry). Do not take comments or lost opportunities to heart. There are some incredible captains, owners, and crew who will celebrate you!”

Where to Seek Support

“Ten years ago, it was a very different story — now it’s great to see more Pride in the industry. There are so many people out there on social media who are supporting the community. She of the Sea is one that instantly comes to mind. However, there is definitely room for more,” First Mate Kerr says. “There has also been a huge boost in mental health awareness on board; there is loads of support groups online and podcasts. Just reach out.”

“Tash and I are always on the end of a phone/WhatsApp for LGBTQ+ individuals/couples,” says Chief Officer Matthews. “We have an amazing community to connect people with and feel there is so much to be gained from shared experiences.”

For those who would like to connect with mental health/wellbeing support, there are great resources out there such as the ISWAN Crew Help line and The Crew Coach. “We also always recommend all crew, regardless of orientation, sign up to Nautilus to have access to support, legal advice, and more should the need ever arise,” Matthews suggests.

“Find other gay crew through social media and then ask for help,” Purser/Interior Manager Blair recommends. “There’s no shame in asking for help and we can attest that it’s not always bad; things do get better. ... There is more support and help out there than you realize.”

Chief Stew Groenewald started a LGBTQ+ Yacht Crew Facebook page, which is the perfect place to connect, share stories, and find a safe space. Her Messenger is always open and she hopes to get a strong, positive conversation started in the industry.

Second Stew Hanekom explains how queer representatives, influencers, corporations, and LGBTQIA+ allies are becoming more vocal within the industry. “We would highly suggest reaching out to these organizations and individuals who are able to provide solid advice and mentorship, and [who] may be able to put you with the right mix of people.”

“It’s been my experience that the real magic happens when we are able to show up as ourselves at work and connect with our job and the people around us authentically,” says Matthews. “Each of us have a unique road and I want to thank all the individuals, allies, and the LGBTQ+ community we are part of for adding so much love and color to our industry!”

Practice acceptance. Practice love. It all starts in ourselves. As my favorite Queen RuPaul says: “If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love anybody else?”

I took a $13,000 pay cut to work as a deckhand on a superyacht. I don't regret it as it gave me a career I can grow in.

• Nathan Marx was a quality controller in South Africa but decided to switch to becoming a superyacht deckhand.
• Marx said the job has more growth potential than his previous job and helped him develop more meaningful relationships.
• Working around the wealthy has shown Marx that success is attainable and wealth doesn't change people's core natures.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Nathan Marx, a deckhand for a superyacht. It has been edited for length and clarity.

From 2020 to the end of 2023, I was a quality controller at an engineering company that made mining machinery in South Africa, I managed 132 employees and earned 3,000 euros, around $3,333 a month.

My future was pretty secure at the company, but I lacked that sense of adventure and felt like there was more to life than working away every day and not seeing the world as I would like.

I knew some friends who had entered the yachting industry since leaving school, and it looked very intriguing and adventurous.

My previous job had long hours and was hard work, which made me comfortable stepping into the yachting industry.

When I started working on deckhand certification courses in January this year, I was told about these massive yachting hubs where it'd be easier to find work opportunities because they were saturated with boats.

One of those was Antibes, France. I moved there in May this year and traveled the entire coastline of the south of France, dock walking daily, exploring the vessels, and putting myself out there to catch the right opportunity.

I started documenting my job search on TikTok on the day I left for France. I was very nervous that I didn't have a job yet, and I wanted to stand out and get a step ahead in my job search. I love expressing myself through video creation, so the two went hand in hand.

I met this girl who works on this vessel docked in Monaco for the season. She saw my videos, and we got to know each other. I was the first person she contacted when they needed a deckhand. So it's all about getting in front of the right people's eyes.

My role on the yacht is to ensure the boat's exterior is pristine. Everything regarding the exterior, from the hull to the deck, to any furniture outside, is my responsibility to ensure that it is presentable for guests. I also help with basic watchkeeping when the yacht is out at sea.

Now, three months in, I'm at the bottom of the food chain and I'm earning 1,000 euros less every month than I did back in South Africa. But this career has room for growth and will keep me above the ceiling that I reached in South Africa in my management job.

One thing I realized working on yachts is that you live in the same space as your coworkers. If something bothers you about a person and you keep quiet, it builds within you and just sours the relationship on board. You have to foster a relationship with them that is a lot more fruitful than a normal employee would.

I think I also value that because not only am I getting to travel or experience all these crazy things that normal people in a 9-to-5 usually won't, but I'm also meeting people and creating connections with them that'll last a lifetime instead. That real connection with people also gives me satisfaction.

Having a life outside this industry might be challenging because anything can happen at the last minute. You might have time to spare one moment, but you're expecting guests the next, and you're suddenly back to work for a week. So whatever you have planned just needs to fall on the back burner.

But the maritime industry here sets out work-life balance very well, and I think that's also one of the things that drew me to the yachting industry because my previous job did not value my personal life. So, after the hard work, I get a lot of off time, and I have time to go and experience things and step off.

One of my favorite places I visited was a beautiful little town on a hill with an absurd history called Bonifacio, on the island of Corsica, France. We also had the privilege of hiking up into the old city, an amazing experience I don't think I would've had otherwise if I wasn't into the yachting industry.

I once spoke to a person who's been in the industry for around nine years. He told me about chartering Will Smith and all these big A-list star names, which sounded so enticing. I haven't had any of those or any experiences like that, but the individuals we meet on this boat are very high-net-worth because renting the vessel I work on costs about 78,000 euros a week.

We once had a client with 3.2 million Instagram followers on board and had a normal conversation with her. It was humbling to me because you always think these people will be different or special in some way, but at the end of the day, they're just normal people. She never mentioned anything about her success once. It was so normal that I was surprised.

It's very motivating to be surrounded by individuals like that because they make you feel that their success is possible for you, too.

The superyacht industry is unlike other luxury sectors. The places people visit are so unique that not everyone gets to see them. The cost involved is also quite exorbitant, with some yachts going for 500,000 euros a week. So, the client has a level of expectation of luxury they want to receive, and you have to live up to very high standards that no other luxury industry has.

My career can progress from here in many ways, and I'm trying to explore all those avenues. But the yachting industry is a tight-knit community that's made me very happy over the past few months, so I'll stay for as long as possible.

El caso ha sorprendido y conmocionado a la opinión pública, revelando detalles impactantes que han llevado a cuestionar no solo la relación entre víctima y victimario, sino también a arrojar luz sobre una práctica sexual poco conocida: el «yachting», también denominado como «gay -para pagar».

La historia de Daniel Sancho y Edwin Arrieta revela una trama de encuentros sexuales y oscuros secretos. El joven Sancho, de 27 años, confesó haber mantenido relaciones sexuales esporádicas con Arrieta, con quien se habría encontrado a través de la plataforma de redes sociales Instagram hace un año.

Sin embargo, la relación dio un giro oscuro cuando Sancho quiso poner fin a los vínculos. Arrieta habría amenazado con difundir imágenes íntimas de ambos y perjudicar la imagen pública de la familia Sancho. ‘If someone had offered me a third of the asking price to buy the boat back, I would have bitten their hand off’ – Monty Halls

New owner Monty Halls tests his sailing skills with his family aboard their Colvic 34 ketch Sobek. A recently qualified Day Skipper, Monty faces a few unexpected challenges

I sat back on the saloon roof, leaned against the mast, sipped my beer, and revelled in the moment. Here I was, at long last, perched on my very own vessel – a 34ft ketch named Sobek.

It marked the end of a long aspirational journey, the culmination of a dearly held dream, and I couldn’t believe that it had come to fruition. Monty Halls, yachtsman. Monty Halls, skipper. Monty Halls, flinty eyed explorer who will ride the wind towards a curved blue horizon. In short, this was going to be great.

Fast forward 24 hours, and I’m trying to manoeuvre the same yacht out of the marina so I can get it home. Problem was, Sobek seemed rather reluctant to leave, and for some reason that my (up to that point) powerboat experience couldn’t fathom, kept pointing her bow in the wrong direction. ‘Wrong’ in this case being towards lots of other yachts in the marina, to whom she had plainly become very attached and wanted to kiss goodbye.

This being a Sunday afternoon, said yachts had people on board, who were popping up in their cockpits like meerkats, occasionally offering a few words of advice but mainly just looking at me. And, unequivocally, judging me. They were all, in my eyes, rime-encrusted veterans of numerous circumnavigations, and they knew I was an imposter in their midst.

There was a certain amount of frantic see-sawing of the throttle, with me bellowing ‘Sorry!’ as my bowsprit scythed inches away from their ashen- faced loved ones. Fortunately I had a mate on board (now bitterly regretting it), who, as a former commando, was running around offering himself as a large, fleshy fender to avoid scratching gleaming gel coats and collecting guardrails.

And then – miraculously – we were out of the entrance and into the open sea. One of the folks in the marina even called after me to wish me luck on my travels. I didn’t catch all of what he said, but the last word was definitely ‘….off’.

If someone had, at that precise moment, offered me a third of the asking price to buy the boat back, I would have bitten their hand off. And that brings me to the subject of this, my first column for YM. I’m a new skipper, albeit one who now has a bit more experience than the pinball wizard who terrorised Plymouth Yacht Haven last year, and I think there’s an uncomfortable truth that needs to be acknowledged about buying a boat for the first time. Or truths, to be more accurate.

Monty Halls on the trials and tribulations of sailing

Now, before you horny-palmed ocean conquerors give a rum-laden snort of derision, I’ve just emerged triumphant from my Day Skipper…

Imposter syndrome

First, they’re large, controlled by an engine that’d just about run a sewing machine, are subject to some interesting laws of physics, and operate on a big, wobbly, slippery, moveable conveyor belt that also does its own thing. That’s quite a lot to take in.

Second, there’s several bits of string that all have weird names. And most other things on board have weird names as well. It is, without doubt, a discombobulating, alien world. Third, literally everyone else on earth who owns a yacht is better than you, knows more than you, has drunk their own urine whilst becalmed in the doldrums, and can tell on sight that you’re a muppet. In short, the psychology of new boat ownership is one of mild neurosis and skewed perceptions.

Eighteen months of experience has actually shown me the reality is, of course, that everyone has been where you are, and will leap to your assistance given half a chance. Just last week a septuagenarian lady sprinted 50 metres to take one of my lines, digging her heels in as Sobek threatened to break free and head back to Plymouth from our mooring in Dartmouth. She took a turn round a cleat, gripped the line with corded forearms, and smiled at me reassuringly in a kind of ‘Take it easy big fella, I’ve got this’ manner. How lovely.

It’s also turned out to be one of the most rewarding physical and mental challenges of my life. It’s ironic that something so simply powered by the elements involves so many moving parts – the tide, the angle of the wind, planning, the direction of the swell, and the competence of the crew. And on that very subject, it’s been the ultimate team-building experience for my family. In fact, I’d get my wife Tam to write something on the subject, but she’s in town right now and has been gone for ages. Something about seeing a lawyer…

The other, final point, is that this is a never-ending journey. I’m better than I was, but a very long way from being the sailor and skipper I hope to become. And that will be the subject of the columns to come.

‘We were in full survival mode’ – Wild racing on day one of the Youth America’s Cup

The Youth America's Cup got underway on Tuesday 17 September and after a long wait the racing was fast, frantic and, at times chaotic

The first day of the UniCredit Youth America’s Cup in Barcelona did not get off to a flying start on Tuesday 17 September, as challenging conditions saw a significant delay to racing.

Crews spent a long time on the water waiting for winds, which struggled to reach the minimum limit of 7.5 knots. It wasn’t until the early evening that racing was able to get underway, with a sudden shift in the weather , bringing stronger winds of 14-16 knots from the southeast, along with rougher seas.

The intensified conditions tested the skills of the young sailors, particularly in the first race of the day, after the sudden change in conditions caught all teams out and they started the raving with their biggest headsail up.

The combination of large waves, gusty winds, and over-canvassed boats saw all the crews struggling at times throughout the races. In the first race, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, helmed by Marco Gradoni and Gianluigi Ugolini, secured a commanding lead for Italy.

Despite the challenging conditions, they held off American Magic to win the race. Emirates Team New Zealand put in an impressive performance after being early at the start, they managed to overhaul the British Athena Project for third place by the end of the race.

Reflecting on the day, Harry Melges, skipper of NYYC American Magic, described the conditions. “The racing was really awesome. It was extremely difficult for us. The first race when the wind came in was quite bumpy and we’re on the J1 still which kind of threw the boat out of balance pretty good and made it quite tricky to sail.”

Race two saw even stronger winds, and technical issues picked up in the first race of the day forced the French and Swiss teams to sit out. Emirates Team New Zealand briefly took the lead, but a mistake on the downwind leg allowed Luna Rossa to pull ahead. However, American Magic overtook the Italians on the final legs, achieving speeds of 30 to 40 knots, and secured the win.

By the end of the day, American Magic and Luna Rossa were tied on points, while Emirates Team New Zealand and Athena Pathway shared third.

Gradoni, skipper of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli – both here and previously in an Americas Cup Preliminary Event in the AC40 – praised his team saying: “It was just amazing to race and I’m really proud of the boys because it was really difficult, especially downwind it was crazy passing through the waves. I’m really proud of the boys because they’re less experienced than me but they learn super-fast, and we know we can be better.”

Racing in the Youth America’s Cup will resume Wednesday with four scheduled races across Group A and Group B, starting at 10:30 CET, with the hope that these races can be run ahead of the Louis Vuitton Cup Semi-Final racing, which is due to take place at 14:00 CET.
