What Is A Yacht Club? 8 Interesting Facts (For Beginners!)

' src=

Yacht clubs can seem intimidating but they don’t have to be. The purpose of a yacht club is to celebrate boaters and the sport of yacht racing, sailing, and cruising.

What Is A Yacht Club? A yacht club is a social membership sports club for boaters. Yacht clubs are typically located near lakes or the sea with local members that are boat owners or people, leasing or renting boats. There’s a monthly or yearly membership fee.

Here’s everything you need to know about yacht clubs.

Table of Contents

1. What is the purpose of a yacht club?

vice commodore yacht club

Yacht clubs are a type of sports club which is centered around boating. They are located seaside, but you can find the occasional yacht club near a river or lake, depending on your area. They are normally located in a building on the water, with a section of the water delimited for club activities, normally roped off with buoys.

Clubhouses often have cafes, bars, or a restaurant so members can socialize in an informal setting. At certain clubs, the restaurant can be open to the public for certain hours of the day but are closed during yacht club festivities.

They are generally run and operated by memberships and are used to promote cruising, racing, and socializing for yacht aficionados.

People refer to yacht clubs by their initials.

The New York Yacht Club is colloquially referred to the abbreviation NYYC. Just like that, another name for the Kamini Yacht Club is the KYC. Some yacht clubs have been established under royal patronages, like the Royal Yacht Squadron or the Yacht Club de France .

Some clubs are focused more on memberships (meaning that they have more of a commercial focus). Others provide a service for the community. Others are associated with particular ports or marinas. However, while the objectives might vary, one of the common themes in all yacht clubs is their emphasis on socialization with one another.

2. Why join a yacht club?

Yacht clubs are great ways for you to be able to learn about various yacht expeditions, trips, destinations, and events. If you are planning to go on an adventure on your yacht, a club is a great way to find details for your trip, from experts or veterans who have made many of those trips in the past.

Other yacht enthusiasts and experts like to brag about their adventures. This is a great way to find out about things you may want to try in the future.

In addition to that, there are other, more tangible advantages, such as:

  • Getting access to planned activities and cruises organized and planned out by the board members.
  • Having access to the facilities of the yacht club, like the exercise room, dining rooms, and the meeting rooms.
  • You will be able to have your children join the youth or junior programs. These are often at a reduced price or even free for yacht club members.
  • You can get a boat slip for your yacht on the premises, or if not at the marina, then at a dry storage area.
  • You can race under their US sanctioned burgee (the flag of the yacht club). Often, racing at national or international competitions requires membership to a qualifying yacht club.

3. Do you have to own a yacht to be in a yacht club?

While it isn’t always mandatory to own a yacht, boating and sailing knowledge is a must when joining a yacht club. Some clubs offer yacht rentals (or you can rent a yacht from a marina).

After all, one of the ways that a yacht club can attract new members is by getting in touch with new boaters and with fledgling yacht owners.

If you are interested in joining a yacht club, consider going to yacht racing events and socializing with some of the regular faces there. You may find that they will invite you to their yacht club as a guest.

Most yacht clubs leave it up to the members to figure out what the club’s objectives are when it comes to satisfying membership regulations and attracting other likeminded individuals.

What is a commodore at a yacht club?

Like most clubs or organizations, yacht clubs often have committees, chairmen, directors, and other forms of leadership. However, because of the nautical focus in activities, the chairman or the CEO of the yacht club is known as the Commodore.

4. What is an example of the different roles of officers in yacht clubs?

Yacht clubs are run differently. An example of that is how each officer does things differently depending on what club you are in.

Generally speaking, a breakdown of the roles is as such:

  • Committee (General) – Each member of a committee is elected and–together–they fill these following roles:
  • Commodore.  A commodore sets the direction which the club will follow and manages the club. This person also chairs the committee meetings
  • Vice Commodore.  This person is second in command and organized and manages either the sailing or land activities of the club.
  • Rear Commodore.  This is the third person in command and manages what the vice commodore does not (either sailing or land). Whoever manages the land activities, manages the social events (dinners, galas, mixers, and other gatherings).
  • Secretary. Port captain or fleet captain is another name for a secretary in a yacht club. They are officers who handle the club records and maintain all of the legal documentation in accordance with the law. This might include licenses, rules, rates, health and safety certificates
  • Treasurer. P ort captain or the fleet captain can be another name for the treasurer, depending on the title of the secretary. Treasurer handles all of the finances and also submits legal documentation in accordance with the law. They are required to keep the committee apprised of the financial situation of the club.

In the United Kingdom, there is also an Admiral , who is ranked above a Commodore. He is the senior officer and makes sure that everything within the club runs smoothly.

Depending on the club, other members of the committee might include the titles of:

  • Sailing secretary
  • Training principal
  • Sailing yacht coxswain
  • Powerboat coxswain
  • Harbormaster
  • Class captains
  • House secretary
  • Bar secretary
  • Catering secretary
  • Club welfare officer

5. What is the difference between a marina and a yacht club?

The difference between a yacht club and a marina is the purpose in which it operates. A yacht club is a private club. It is organized and assembled to aid in the support of the sport of sailing/racing. It also supports its members in various ways.

Boaters will dock and house their yachts in Marinas.

The marinas themselves are either privately or publicly owned.

6. What are the best or the top 10 yacht clubs in the world?

There are hundreds of organizations in the United States alone. With as many harbors or seaside towns are in the world, just imagine how many yacht clubs there are on earth.

Each of these clubs has its own target members and specialty. Some clubs specialize in racing. Others in sailing education programs.

Some clubs focus on cruising. While others focus on rentals. Because of the differences, it can be difficult to rate yachts on a “top ten best” list.

Of course, that’s why the Platinum Clubs of America lists exist.

7. What are the top ten Platinum Yacht Clubs in America?

The Platinum Clubs of America chooses clubs based on their recognition and excellence. The people on the committee give the title of “Platinum Club of America” to clubs based in the US, which meet each of the seven criteria:

  • Universal recognition
  • Excellence in amenities and facilities
  • The caliber of staff and professional service levels
  • Quality and commitment of membership
  • Governance and prudent fiscal management
  • Adapting to changing times
  • Overall experience

Based on those criteria, here are the top ten yacht clubs on their list:

  • Francis Yacht Club (out of San Francisco, Cali, rated at 83.55/100 points)
  • San Diego Yacht Club (out of San Diego, Cali, rated at 81.82/100)
  • Grosse Pointe Yacht Club (out of Grosse Pointe Shores, Mich., rated at 74.23/100)
  • Annapolis Yacht Club (out of Annapolis, Md., rated at 70.18/100)
  • Chicago Yacht Club (out of Chicago, Ill., rated at 69.86/100)
  • Naples Yacht Club (out of Naples, Fla. rated at 67.49/100)
  • Pelican Isle Yacht Club (out of Naples, Fla., rated at 63.57/100)
  • Sailfish Club of Florida (out of Palm Beach, Fla. 68/100)
  • Beach Point Club (out of Mamaroneck, N.Y., rated at 59.41/100)
  • The San Francisco Yacht Club (out of Belvedere, Calif., rated at 59.37/100)

8. What are some of the oldest yacht clubs?

The ten oldest yacht clubs are the:

  • Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, based out of Halifax, Nova Scotia (and established in 1837)
  • Detroit Boat Club, based out of Detroit, Michigan (established in 1839)
  • The New York Yacht Club, based out of Newport, Rhode Island (and established in 1844)
  • Mobile Yacht Club, based out of Mobile, Alabama (established in 1847)
  • Biloxi Yacht Club, based out of Biloxi, Mississippi (established in 1849)
  • Southern Yacht Club, based out of Louisiana (established in 1849)
  • Springfield Yacht & Canoe Club, based out of Springfield, Massachusetts (established in 1850)
  • Royal Canadian Yacht Club, based out of Toronto, Ontario (established in 1852)
  • Carolina Yacht Club, based out of North Carolina (established in 1853)
  • Maryland Club, based out of Baltimore, Maryland (established in 1857)

Final Thoughts

There are some major advantages to joining an organization like a yacht club. The tangible benefits of being a club member include boat slips, access to facilities, discounts on services, etc. In addition, there are social benefits like the sense of community which comes with the club.

It is always best to sail, race, and cruise with experienced, like-minded people. Now, this doesn’t mean that you should sail with a big group all the time. Sailing with a limited crew, out on the open water can be quite relaxing. The sense of community is a great experience that everyone should be exposed to, no matter what their hobby is.

Yacht clubs focus on different things, find the one which best speaks to you on a personal level. Why did you start boating? What do you enjoy about boating? What are you looking for in a yacht club?

VICE COMMODORE CLARE HARINGTON

The Future of Sailing

vice commodore yacht club

Clare Harrington, the first woman to reach the ranks of Vice Commodore at the New York Yacht Club, on the next generation of sailors and the innovative designs of the upcoming America’s Cup

Last fall, Clare Harrington was appointed the Vice Commodore of the New York Yacht Club, becoming the first woman to hold the second-in-command position of the historic institution.

“People have made kind of a big deal about it,” she says of becoming the first woman Commodore at the Club. “I like to think it’s not a thing, but of course, it is a thing.”

vice commodore yacht club

Harrington was raised on Long Island, and she first discovered her love for sailing on the Long Island Sound.

“I grew up sailing,” she says. “I started racing at some point. I was terrible when I started; I got better.”

She eventually found herself part of the Martha’s Vineyard sailing scene, where she skippered “Shields” out of the Edgartown Yacht Club — at a time when very few women were skippers. In 2000, she became a member of the New York Yacht Club.

“ I joined the race committee, and from there I was nominated to be the chair of the race committee,” Harrington says. At the time, 2017, she was the first woman to be nominated as the chair of any committee at the club. Now, two other women are chairs of different committees.

“We’re all trustees”

The New York Yacht Club was founded in 1844, and the Race Committee was established in 1845 (it was initially known as the Rules Committee). In 1987, the NYYC acquired Harbour Court in Newport, which is the former home of Commodore John Nicholas Brown. The Newport clubhouse opened in 1988. Today, the NYYC has about 3,400 members, hailing from around the world.

In 2021, Harrington was nominated and then voted in as Rear Commodore, the Number Three position at the Club. Positions are usually held for two-year terms, although you must be voted in annually. It’s all but expected that the person who becomes Rear Commodore will become Vice Commodore, and then Commodore — although formal voting must take place to ensure it’s all official.

The voting body is formed of trustees and the major committee heads. Nominations come from the nominating committee, which is made up of past commodores.

Once a person becomes chair of a committee, as Harington did for the race committee, they also become a member of the executive committee.

“We’re all trustees,” says Harrington, explaining that everyone is responsible for the health and well-being of the club and “staying true to the mission.”

THE SHORT HISTORY OF PRESQU’ILE YACHT CLUB

Presqu'ile Yacht Club - Brighton

In the early sixties, a new breed of sailors appeared on the Presqu’ile Bay.

Club Members

In the early seventies, most of the boaters of the then Pearsall Marina joined the club. Over time, the club’s fleet changed from dinghies to mainly cruising boats. During this time, the club started seriously looking for a waterfront property to buy. In 1976, the Presqu’ile Yacht Club bought a property of approximately three acres at the east end of Price Street in the Gosport area of the town of Brighton where the Club resides to this day.

The harbor was excavated, the docks were built, a 66’ trailer was bought for a clubhouse and a de-masting crane was installed. All work, with the exception of the excavation, was done by the labour of the club members.

The New Clubhouse

Presently, the club has a capacity of 48 members with boats ranging up to 31ft. The club runs an active racing program. Races are held most Saturdays during the summer months in Presqu’ile Bay and in the main lake to Nicholson and Scotch Bonnet islands.  Fun races are held in the bay on Wednesday nights. Cruises are organized during the summer months to various locations around Lake Ontario. Other social activities include barbeques, potluck suppers, and corn roasts.

The Presqu’ile Yacht Club is considered one of the most scenic, tranquil, and friendliest clubs on Lake Ontario.

Commodore Jack

Vice commodore nannon.

At age six, Jack had wrestled his first bear, using the teeth to make the one and only necklace he would wear in his life.

By 15, Jack had circled the globe in a dingy, utilizing vintage Guns & Roses tee-shirts as a sail and sustaining himself on fish, rain water, and the tears of his enemies.

Around campfires, they say his ingenuity and ruthlessness continues to this day.

Nannon showed a cunning sense of business from a young age, gaining a monopoly in the Houston lemonade stand market through a series of strategic mergers and acquisitions and a brutal campaign of shareholder votes of no confidence.

Her knife-like smile could butter bread, or stab you in the jugular. On the rough seas, Nannon is the one to steer you in the right direction.

American liberty-newest cruise ship in the usa christened in newport, ri.

American Cruise Lines is pleased to announce that American Liberty, the 3rd new Coastal Cat in the company's groundbreaking series of 100-passenger ships, was christened in Newport, Rhode Island this week. The celebration took place on a glorious sunny day at Fort Adams State Park, where all American's small ships dock when visiting Newport . American Liberty was visiting the historic seaside town along its inaugural cruise with guests, sailing one of the Line's most popular summer itineraries, a New England Islands cruise, roundtrip from Providence, RI .

GUILFORD, Conn.  , Aug. 22, 2024 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- American Liberty's christening celebration included cruise guests, community members, officials from Sail Newport and Fort Adams State Park, and a small group of American's executives and crewmembers. Charles B. Robertson , President & CEO of American Cruise Lines, gave remarks as did American Liberty's Godmother, Clare Harington , Vice Commodore of the New York Yacht Club. Brad Read , Executive Director of Sail Newport, and Lauren Carson, RI State Representative, also spoke at the event, both commending American Cruise Lines for its steadfast commitment to sustainable cruising and the company's continuous introduction of new, environmentally friendly small ships. Musical trio, The Victory Belles, were also on hand to entertain guests with patriotic music as everyone gathered on the ship's top deck for the official blessing and ceremonial bottle smash. The christening was followed by a traditional New England Lobsterbake at Fort Adams State Park where guests enjoyed a discussion and live demonstration of the region's ancient Native American cooking process.

"We are honored to be able to host this event in Fort Adams State Park with our fantastic partners from the community and Sail Newport. We are especially honored to have Vice Commodore Clare Harington of the New York Yacht Club serve as godmother of American Liberty. We look forward to further developing our longtime partnerships in Newport and many other historic coastal towns along the Eastern Seaboard." said Charles B. Robertson , President & CEO of American Cruise Lines.

American Liberty's Newport celebration follows the christenings of series flagship, American Eagle, on Buzzard's Bay, Massachusetts ( August 2023 ); and American Glory's christening, in Key West, Florida ( November 2023 ). American Cruise Lines 4th new Coastal Cat, American Legend, is scheduled to begin sailing this November 2024 .

American Liberty will continue operating the company's New England Islands cruises into September, then the newest ship in the country will sail a mix of the Line's exclusive East Coast itineraries from Hudson River Fall Foliage cruises, roundtrip from NYC, to popular Historic South & Golden Isles cruises, between Charleston, South Carolina and Amelia Island , Florida ( November 2024 through spring 2025).

Because of American's innovative new ships and expanding array of domestic itineraries across the country, demand for the company's specialized cruise experiences continues to grow. Unlike any other cruise line operating in the U.S.A. , all American's coastal itineraries operate just like river cruises, sailing in sight of land and visiting only U.S. ports of call. The company has introduced 19 of the 22 U.S.-built cruise ships launched over the past two decades. American Liberty is part of the company's ongoing Project Blue Series—a series of 12 new small ships

Like its sister ships, American Liberty accommodates just 100 guests, features 4 decks, and a unique catamaran bow. The Coastal Cat also offers elegant interior design, private balcony accommodations, a beautiful top deck for amazing views, comfortable lounges both inside and out, a main restaurant and casual café, and a walking track and fitness center, unusual amenities for small ships.

A virtual 360-degree tour of American Liberty and the company's Coastal Cats is available here: American Cruise Lines Virtual Coastal Cat Tour. Ship photos and more information are always available on the company's main website under the "ships" tab.

About American Cruise Lines: American Cruise Lines is the largest river cruise line in the U.S.A. with 19 small ships exploring the Mississippi River and waterways around the country. The company's award-winning fleet and domestic itineraries build on a 50-year history of delivering curated all-American explorations. Today, the company offers luxury river cruise experiences in 35 states and operates the only 100% U.S. flagged fleet of riverboats and small ships in the world, all sailing exclusively in the U.S.A.

'Nothing left': After California Yacht Club fire, residents mourn loss of a beloved spot

I n an instant, an overnight seaside blaze engulfed decades' worth of boating trophies, historical artifacts and cherished memorabilia at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey on Monday.

Fire crews attempted to control the blaze as heavy smoke and flames consumed the two-story building. By the time they had subdued the fire two hours later, only the skeletal remnants of the clubhouse were left standing.

John Myers, senior vice president of the club, said the blaze had been reported by an employee working late in the clubhouse Monday night. The fire spared the remainder of the facilities on the ground, including the docks and the yachts moored there. But the clubhouse, and particularly its second floor, was all but wiped out.

“We are working closely with the Los Angeles County Fire Department in their investigation of the cause of the incident and will share those findings when they become available to us,” Myers said.

Members are left mourning, comparing the loss to the death of a loved one.

Jennifer Dakoske Koslu awoke in Rancho Mirage at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, before the sun had risen, to find her phone inundated with text messages from club members.

The first message she read simply stated, "The CYC is gone."

“As soon as I opened my phone, it went to a link on the Citizen app and saw a video of the club burning. I was shocked,” Dakoske Koslu said.

For the last 24 years, Dakoske Koslu and her family have been dedicated members of the CYC, whose clubhouse is a few miles away from their home in Playa del Rey. She said it is where her children have grown up, familiarizing themselves with every inch.

“I remember taking my son there on the Fourth of July when he was just 3 weeks old. It was the first place we went with him as a newborn," Dakoske Koslu said.

She and her husband biked to the club in the aftermath of the fire, greeted by the charred remains of the building on Wednesday afternoon.

“The destruction is unbelievable. It's clear that the fire was burning intensely on the second floor,” Dakoske Koslu said. “There's nothing left.”

The second floor once housed a collection of the club's prestigious racing trophies, kept on display for members and visitors. The fire melted all but a single salvageable California Cup. Most notably, the priceless King of Spain Trophy, acquired in 1929 from King Alfonso XIII, was lost.

Additionally, the club lost cherished photographs of every past commodore, a significant position within a yacht club. Members said they didn't know if anyone had digitized the images of the commodores or of the club's founders.

“We would tell yachting stories at the bar around lots of memorabilia, and the yachting artifacts behind the bar are all gone now,” Tom Materna said. “The yacht club provided us a facility for the off-the-water celebrations after hard-fought competition on the water.”

The CYC dates to the early 1920s, started by boat owners from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and other yacht clubs. The Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the first clubhouse in 1922, designed by famed architect Edwin Bergstrom, co-designer of the Pentagon.

In 1965, the yacht club submitted a proposal for an all-encompassing $1-million, two-story, 10,000-square-foot clubhouse on four acres off Admiralty Way. Members envisioned a state-of-the-art facility with 170 boat slips, a guest dock, a small boat hoist and a dry land storage facility for boats. The clubhouse that resulted was dedicated on June 10, 1967.

Then-Commodore William A. DeGroot Jr. told The Times that the triangular parcel of land on which the clubhouse still sits is a “perfectly logical place for a club facility, and a commanding view down the main channel of the marina.”

Though the building has historical significance to its members, it does not have a historic designation, according to Linda Dishman, president of the Los Angeles Conservancy.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and our members,” Myers said. “CYC has been a beacon for the nautical community for the past 101 years.”

Materna, 68, first found out about the fire through Facebook as friends posted videos and photos of the damage Tuesday morning. Then he began receiving calls and text messages from friends.

“Everybody woke up in the morning and realized we'd lost a significant part of the sailing community,” Materna said.

His connection to the club dates back nearly 52 years, to when he was just 16 years old. After spending 30 years sailing professionally with Hobie Cats, mainly racing catamarans — a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size — he recently served as a crew member on other club members' racing yachts.

The CYC is pivotal in the boat racing community, organizing and hosting events such as the Optimist National Championship and Junior Olympic trials, Materna said. He fondly remembers the hundreds of people from across the globe converging on the marina for similar events.

The main topic among members now is what's next for the club. Dakoske Koslu noted that the club's ownership changed over the last few years, and many are unsure and concerned about the club's continuation after the fire.

The club relocated to the marina in 1967, leasing the land it sits on from the county.

“I don't think the county has really valued the contributions of the California Yacht Club as an important part of the Marina. They value Trader Joe's because it's more money for them,” Dakoske Koslu said.

Dakoske Koslu said she’s seen numerous small marine-oriented businesses displaced from the marina, making way for more commercialized developments such as Trader Joe's and Recreational Equipment Inc.
