The J-46, with the help of state-of-the-art materials and building techniques, has evolved over ten years from the combined experience and knowledge of J Boats, TPI, and nearly 100 J-44 owners. The J-44 to date has been the most successful offshore 45 foot (44.9 ft) cruiser - racer in the world. Honored in 1990 by Sailing World Magazine as Overall Boat of the Year, the yacht's reputation has continued to grow. Winner of the Fastnet, Sydney-Hobart, two TransAtlantic races, and the New York Yacht Club's Queen's Cup, the J-44 is the only class of yacht to ever be granted its own start by the Cruising Club of America in the Newport- Bermuda Race. The seaworthiness of the design is unquestionable. The sleek, low resistance shape of the hull was not designed to conform to any rating rule. This boat was created to the only rule that counts: the Rule of the Sea, which is timeless. The J-46 brings performance cruising to an exciting level. Using the seakindly hull shape of her J-44 predecessor, the J-46 benefits from recent advancements in construction technique, keel and rudder design, interior styling, and simplified sail handling systems to create an ideal offshore yacht. Two people can easily manage her upwind and down to achieve the same 8 knot passagemaking speeds under sail that is possible when motoring with a 76 hp diesel auxiliary. Many cruising yachts compromise sailing comfort and performance in favor of "dockside comfort." What seems good at a boatshow may not be desirable when heeled at 15-20 degrees at sea. This fundamental difference in design philosophy sets the J-46 apart from other boats. The J-46 is designed from the outside in. The priority is sailing quality: how well the boat balances, how well she sails through waves with minimal commotion, and how well she treats her most valuable cargo - her crew. The same qualities that make J-46 a dream to sail also contribute to her seaworthiness, manageability, and performance. The J-46 is evidence that a high performance sailboat with predictable handling can also be comfortable belowdecks. The elegantly appointed interior, finished in satin varnished cherry, is befitting her status as an investment-grade yacht. The layout features two staterooms, two heads, and a large navigation station and galley, striking an excellent compromise between practical "working" space and comfortable living quarters. Unlike rule-inspired hull shapes, the J-46 features a high length-to-beam ratio combined with ample reserve buoyancy forward. High length-to-beam ratio ensures straight tracking in rough seas with minimal steering loads on autopilot or helmsman. Greater balance of reserve buoyancy in the ends of the hull also improves handling in following seas, helping to lift the bow over the wave ahead instead of submerging. Sailboats with fine ends and full midship sections are more difficult to balance and more likely to hobby-horse and spin out of control in offshore conditions. The J-46 balances so well she can sail with either main-only or jib-only sail configurations. The challenge in cruising design is to have enough sailpower and a low enough center of gravity for the boat to perform well. This is even more of a challenge with shoal draft cruising yachts. No boat will perform if the inertia of the combined weight of gear and hull weight being tossed about in waves overwhelms the stabilizing effect of sail area. The J-46 achieves added stability with a carbon fiber mast (which is half the weight of aluminum), the SCRIMP deck and hull (which are lighter and stronger than other production cruisers), and her modem keel design with lead bulb. The combination of these features results in unusual stability for a boat of this length and draft. TPI Composites has become the world leader with its patented SCRIMP molding system. Using similar materials, this process yields a J-46 hull & deck laminate tested at double the strength of the hand lay-up construction found in most other modern boats. The difference in strength is fiber content. A SCRIMP laminate has almost twice the fiber and half the resin. The process is so good, TPI has licensed the technology to leading aircraft and transportation companies for use in airframe and composite vehicle construction. The J-46 is designed to fly a modern asymmetric spinnaker with two people. An 18" clearance between the headstay and the spinnaker halyard allows the spinnaker snuffer to roll around the face of the mast without getting fouled. The forward corner of the spinnaker is fixed to the anchor roller. The snuffer up - down lines are led aft, so that "snuffing" is simply a matter of casting off the spinnaker sheet and pulling the "down" line - all safely done without leaving the cockpit. Imagine being able to cruise with 100 per cent jib instead of an unwieldy genoa. Or, simply roll up the jib in over 20 knots of wind and sail with mainsail alone up to 30 knots without needing to reef. The mainsail flattens out with several strokes of the hydraulic backstay. The J-46 is easily sailed by one person with minimal fuss. How well does this boat sail Five of her less sophisticated J-44 predecessors sailed upwind to Bermuda in the rough 1990 race faster than all Swans between 48 and 61 feet in length. There is no other offshore cruising yacht of its size to compare with the all-around qualities of the J-46, considering the important attributes of seaworthiness, strength of construction, performance, ease of handling, and liveaboard comfort.

A true sailor's boat, ready to go offshorefast

The brochure lays it on the line. "This boat was created to the only rule that counts: The Rule of the Sea, which is timeless." Herein lies the philosophy behind the J/46, the successor to the well-established and highly successful J/44. J Boat's design brief called for a performance cruising boat that was supremely seaworthy and able to achieve 8-knot passagemaking speeds under sail, while treating its crew to a comfortable ride in the open ocean. The result is a sailor's boat, with an interior layout that reflects the realities of long passages and rough days at sea. The J/46 is a refreshing change from many boats of its size.

J/46While the J/46's sleek, streamlined hull with minimal overhangs and low cabinhouse has its ancestry in the proven hull shape of the J/44, new keel and rudder configurations contribute to its speed and ease of handling. The length-to-beam ratio is high and, combined with ample reserve buoyancy forward, makes for very controlled tracking in rough seas, with minimal steering loads on helm or autopilot. Greater balance of reserve buoyancy at both ends of the boat helps the bow lift up and over ocean chop and large waves. This was immediately apparent during a test sail in a moderate sea. There was none of the pitching and digging-in found in many boats with fine ends and full-midship sections. Even in 15 knots of wind and moderate waves, it showed no signs of hobbyhorsing and moved through the water without fuss and minimal motion. Although we didn't try this, the 46 would sail well under either jib or main alone. The J/46 has come a long way from the 44 in terms of construction methods. It's built by TPI Technologies using the company's patented SCRIMP method, a process that uses infusion-molded sandwich construction for the hull and deck. This method makes a light yet strong boat since the laminate has a much higher fiber content with less resin than in conventional layups. SCRIMP laminates, the company says, test out at double the strength of conventional hand-laid construction techniques.

One goal for the design team was to have plenty of sail power, but keep the center of effort low enough to maintain good performance in rough seas. A carbon fiber mast, with half the weight of an aluminum spar, provided part of the solution. A combination of a light, strong hull, a modern keel design with a lead bulb, and a carbon spar give the 46 a remarkable stability, which I could appreciate even on a 15-knot day. With a 110-percent genoa and full main, even a small crew can sail this boat hard in strong winds, an important consideration for a long-distance passagemaker. If the wind pipes up over 20 knots, simply roll up the jib and sail under full main, finally reefing in 30 knots. Above the water On deck, the layout is simple and efficient. A large, T-shaped cockpit separates the helmsman from the crew, with a comfortable bench seat aft that contains a lazarette and propane locker below. The 60-inch wheel is partially recessed into the cockpit floor and just the right size for sitting to windward or leeward when hard on the wind. Unfortunately you have to reach through the spokes for the engine throttle, something I found distracting when maneuvering at closer quarters. I would have preferred to see it on the starboard side of the cockpit. The main traveler and its controls are immediately forward of the helm, with two Lewmar 46s controlling the double-ended mainsheet.

Two long, contoured seats allow for sunbathing and are extremely comfortable when heeled, with sheet winches (electric on the test boat) close to hand. All halyards and sail controls are led aft to the cockpit, with two convenient self-tailers and an army of stoppers close to the companionway. You can raise and lower the main from the cockpit, especially if you invest in a Leisurefurl mainsail, such as was fitted to the test boatÑpractically essential if you are shorthanded.

The J/46 has one of the least cluttered decks I have ever encountered, with good nonskid, well-placed stainless steel cabinhouse grabrails and a locker recessed into the deck forward. The builder provides a single stainless steel anchor roller, but I would recommend investing in the second, optional one too. A convenient anodized toerail with well-placed fairleads surrounds the boat.

Down below You step down from the cockpit into a spacious main cabin, with a U-shaped galley to port and a navigation station to starboard. A small aft cabin lies under the starboard side deck, complete with double berth, a set of drawers and a hanging locker. This would make a valuable seagoing berth under way, but is hardly large enough for prolonged occupation. A head with shower is tucked behind the galley to port, with easy access to the Yanmar diesel from both the aft cabin and head as well as the companionway steps.

The saloon is airy, with three opening ports and lots of hatch ventilation, and the test boat was finished in cherry wood joinery. Teak is another option, but I found the cherry stunning. A U-shaped dinette with table is immediately forward of the galley, and with the conventional berth/settee opposite, you can sit at least six people down to dinner in comfort. There is a pilot berth outboard the dinette.

The galley is palatial, complete with a Force 10 three-burner stove with an oven, a large icebox (refrigeration is optional) and deep, double sinks. The U-shaped design allows you to wedge yourself securely in a seaway, but I would recommend installing a galley strap for the stove if bound offshore, as there is nothing to support the cook from the back while at the stove.

The navigation station opposite has a comfortable, forward-facing seat, with a large chart table with a hinged top. A useful shallow shelf outboard covers the battery space. There is plenty of room for electronic devices of all kinds, with the electrical panel behind your head. There is nothing particularly innovative about the saloon, but it is functional at anchor and at sea, with well-placed grab handles, rounded surfaces and a stainless grab post on the corner of the galley.

From the saloon you pass into the spacious forward cabin, with a larger head and separate shower compartment to port. Locker space lies to starboard of the head. Both heads have white plastic surfaces that are easily cleaned.

The forward cabin itself is a huge V-berth with central insert and shelves and lockers outboard. This is where I would sleep in port, for there is room to move about and stretch, a large hatch overhead for air and room to sit if you wish. No sartorial excesses here, just a thoroughly practical layout you can dress up any way you wish. Under sail The J/46 is a comfortable, well-appointed boat, with an interior finish that is very different from the somewhat austere decor of other racer-cruisers in the J Boat line. But this boat really shines where it matters, out on the ocean.

I backed the 46 out of the slip with fingertip control, the 76-horsepower Yanmar was barely audible in the cockpit. The remarkable steering, with only a full turn lock-to-lock, gave me the confidence to maneuver the boat at close quarters without wishing for a bow thruster. While passaging, the boat should cruise comfortably at 8 knots at about 2800 rpm, depending on the propeller installation.

Instead of the usual near-calms that seem to appear every time I head out for a boat tests, there was a magnificent 12- to 18-knot afternoon breeze, which suited the boat perfectly. We raised main and jib and hardened on the wind, making a comfortable 7 knots in the lighter puffs. When a gust came, the boat heeled and accelerated fast, with almost perfect balance and a level of control that I associate more with tillers than wheels. Above all, it was quiet, moving effortlessly over the chop and allowing almost no spray aboard. I got the impression it would be a dry boat in rougher conditions, an important factor when beating to windward for 20, 30 miles or more.

We cracked off on a reach and set the asymmetrical spinnaker from its convenient sock. Then the boat really came alive, reaching at speeds around 10 knots sailing on a beam reach. I never felt it was sailing out of control, and the boat could have carried the spinnaker in a lot more wind without a moment of concern. The ease of handling was also a revelation. True, setting spinnakers and large genoas on a boat this size can require a cast of more than a couple, especially on long passages and in strong winds, but the basic configuration of main and 100-percent genoa allows for astonishingly easy handling and safe passages under a wide range of open water conditions. A spinnaker snuffer with lines led back to the cockpit can ease the hoisting.

No 46-foot performance cruising yacht is cheap, but there is a lot for the dollar with the J/46. This is a boat that begs for sophisticated electronics linked to one another. I must confess to being a novice at such things, but it was fascinating to sail with an autopilot linked to GPS, radar and instruments. The boat could be fine-tuned effortlessly. Such electronic sophistication doesn't come cheap, but you would get more out of your 46 with such wizardry.

J Boats offers various refrigeration, power, and cruising packages, as well as a wide range of stand-alone options, so you can customize your boat to your heart's content. But what stands out with the J-46 is its blazing performance, exceptional comfort at sea and ability to make long passages in comfort.

Summary Analysis of the Design Ratios for the J46

eBook: How to Avoid Buying the Wrong Sailboat

1. A Sail Area/Displacement Ratio of 19.7 suggests that, in the right hands, the J/46 will have enough performance to leave most other sailboats of similar waterline length well astern.

2. A Ballast/Displacement Ratio of 40.0 means that the  J/46  will initially stand up reasonably well to her canvas in a moderate breeze, but she'll need a reef in the main to avoid heeling excessively in a gust.

3. A Displacement/Length Ratio of 161, tells us the J/46 is clearly a light displacement sailboat. If she's loaded with too much heavy cruising gear her performance will suffer to a degree.

5. The Capsize Screening Formula (CSF) of 1.9 tells us that a J/46 would be a safer choice of sailboat for an ocean passage than one with a CSF of more than 2.0.

A yacht being refueled at a Wildwood marina on Thursday afternoon was heavily damaged in a blaze witnesses say was caused by an explosion.

The fire broke out on a 40-foot yacht at the Schooner Island Marina, according to on-scene reports. It remains under investigation, first responders said.

An eyewitness said the yacht was refueling at the time the fire started. The McKee Group, a Pennsylvania-based developer that owns the marina, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Billowing clouds of smoke were still visible around 2 p.m. as police and fire officials responded to the incident. According to local police at the scene, New Jersey State Police are handling the investigation.

Schooner Island Marina, where visitors can find restaurants and fishing excursions, was filled with patrons watching from afar Thursday afternoon.

Susquehanna Avenue was blocked off near the marina, detouring traffic around emergency fire trucks and ambulances. Firehoses snaked through the marina’s parking lot, creating an obstacle for bystanders.

The scent of gasoline could be detected throughout the marina.

Paul Daiber, who stores his boat at the marina, was fishing at the end of the deck opposite from where the yacht that caught fire was moored.

In 25 years of keeping his vessel there, this was the first time he’s witnessed a boat explosion.

“It’s scary,” Daiber, 56, said while sitting on a truck hatch about 200 yards from the emergency scene.

Daiber described the explosion as a powerful thud and turned around to see the boat on fire. Debris from the vessel were sent into the air and onto nearby docks, Daiber said.

Meanwhile, bystanders raced to find fire extinguishers. Once firefighters arrived, crews tried dousing the blaze that turned into an inferno that could be seen from across the marina, he said.

Blocks away, beach goers snapped photos of plumes that towered into the sky and were pushed by winds.

“It just progressively got worse and worse until it erupted in flames,” Daiber said.

No further information from officials has been released at this time.

The detoured road was reopened to traffic around 5 p.m. Thursday, Wildwood police said.

Manufacturers Provided Description:

The J-46, with the help of state-of-the-art materials and building techniques, has evolved over ten years from the combined experience and knowledge of J Boats, TPI, and nearly 100 J-44 owners. The J-44 to date has been the most successful offshore 45 foot (44.9 ft) cruiser – racer in the world. Honored in 1990 by Sailing World Magazine as Overall Boat of the Year, the yacht’s reputation has continued to grow. Winner of the Fastnet, Sydney-Hobart, two TransAtlantic races, and the New York Yacht Club’s Queen’s Cup, the J-44 is the only class of yacht to ever be granted its own start by the Cruising Club of America in the Newport- Bermuda Race. Many cruising yachts compromise sailing comfort and performance in favor of “dockside comfort.” What seems good at a boatshow may not be desirable when heeled at 15-20 degrees at sea. This fundamental difference in design philosophy sets the J-46 apart from other boats. The J-46 is designed from the outside in. The priority is sailing quality: how well the boat balances, how well she sails through waves with minimal commotion, and how well she treats her most valuable cargo – her crew. The layout features two staterooms, two heads, and a large navigation station and galley, striking an excellent compromise between practical “working” space and comfortable living quarters. An 18″ clearance between the headstay and the spinnaker halyard allows the spinnaker snuffer to roll around the face of the mast without getting fouled. The forward corner of the spinnaker is fixed to the anchor roller. The snuffer up – down lines are led aft, so that “snuffing” is simply a matter of casting off the spinnaker sheet and pulling the “down” line – all safely done without leaving the cockpit.

Missing revealed as divers search superyacht that sank in storm off Sicily

ROME — Rescue teams and divers were searching Tuesday for six missing people, including a British tech magnate and a Morgan Stanley boss, after a luxury superyacht sank in a storm off Sicily .

The identity of those still missing emerged after an initial search of the 184-foot sailboat, named the Bayesian, was unsuccessful Monday. The British-flagged tourist vessel had 22 people aboard when it sank because of “a violent storm” off Sicily’s main city, Palermo, around 5 a.m. local time (11 p.m. ET) on Monday, the local coast guard said.

Newly released video shows the moment the vessel suddenly sank after being battered by the storm. In the video, the 250-foot mast, which was lit up and lashed by the storm, appears to bend to one side before it disappears and is replaced by darkness.

The grainy images obtained by NBC News and other outlets were recorded on closed-circuit television not far from where the Bayesian was anchored.

Fifteen people were rescued by a boat present in the immediate vicinity and then brought ashore by coast guard vessels, but six passengers, including American, British and Canadian citizens, remained missing, it said. They were believed to be trapped in the boat's hull, some 164 feet underwater, posing a challenge to divers who returned Tuesday to the site off Porticello, near Palermo.

Salvatore Cocina, director of Sicily’s Civil Protection Agency, told NBC News that the missing include British tech magnate Mike Lynch and his daughter, Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife.

Cocina did not specify the nationalities of the missing. He also did not identify Lynch's daughter or the wives of Bloomer and Morvillo.

A spokesperson for Clifford Chance, where Morvillo works as a lawyer, confirmed to NBC News on Tuesday that he and his wife, Neda, were among the missing.

Aki Hussain, chief executive officer of U.K. insurance company Hiscox, where Bloomer is a nonexecutive chairman, confirmed to NBC News on Tuesday that Bloomer and his wife, Judy, were missing.

Missing tourists after Italy boat sank off the coast of Palermo

Italy’s national fire department said that its divers were able to get inside the wreck during a late-night dive Monday, inspecting some cabins under the bridge, but were having trouble navigating because of obstructions and narrow access gates. One of those obstructions was reported to have been caused by furniture from the cabins that moved during the storm that struck the ship early Monday.

Rescuers said that there might be bodies inside the cabins, especially considering the timing of the storm, but that they had so far been unable to check through the ship’s portholes.

Divers were forced to work in 12-minute underwater search shifts because of the depth, while surface searches continued in the area of the shipwreck with a helicopter and a fire brigade boat, it added.

Mike Lynch, who was regularly described in U.K. media as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” was cleared of fraud charges in a blockbuster U.S. trial earlier this summer. Sources told CNBC on Monday that his wife, Angela Bacares, has been rescued. Italian news agency ANSA identified his daughter, missing alongside her father, as Hannah, 18.

Just days earlier, Lynch's co-defendant, Stephen Chamberlain, died after being “fatally struck by a car” while out running Saturday, his lawyer Gary Lincenberg said in an emailed statement.

Divers operate in the sea to search for the missing after a luxury yacht sank off Sicily

The sailing vacation that ended in tragedy appeared to be something of a celebration after Lynch’s acquittal — Morvillo was one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers and Bloomer testified in his defense.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event. Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our Chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing,” Hussain, the Hiscox CEO, said in an emailed statement.

A Morgan Stanley spokesperson also said: “Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular the Bloomer family, as we all wait for further news from this terrible situation.”

The Eve Appeal, a British cancer charity, described Judy Bloomer in an emailed statement as “a brilliant champion for women’s health and medical research.”

Britain's Marine Accident Investigation Branch said it was deploying a team of four inspectors to Palermo to conduct a preliminary assessment.

The coast guard said in a statement Monday that the ship’s cook had died. It did not give his nationality. Reuters identified him as Antiguan citizen Ricardo Thomas.

One of the survivors, identified as Charlotte Emsley, 35, told the Italian news agency ANSA that she had momentarily lost hold of her year-old daughter, Sofia, in the water but managed to retrieve her and hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were pulled to safety.

Italian rescue review blueprints of sunken yacht in photos released on Aug 19. 2024.

Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered, Bayesian can carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites.

The yacht’s nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.

Luca Mercalli, an Italian climatologist and president of the country’s meteorological society, told Reuters that the storm could have involved a waterspout, essentially a tornado over water, or a downburst, a more frequent phenomenon that doesn’t involve the rotation of the air.

Storms and heavy rainfall have swept Italy in recent days after weeks of scorching heat.

“The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit), which is almost 3 degrees more than normal,” Mercalli said. “This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms.”

Claudio Lavanga reported from Rome and Yuliya Talmazan from London.

America's Cup sailing is around the corner. Did you know it has ties to North Jersey?

4-minute read.

Portrait of David M. Zimmer

The Olympics are over, but the oldest competition in international sports is just around the corner.

Founded in 1851, the America's Cup sailing event returns on Thursday with a preliminary regatta off the coast of Barcelona that sets the stage for a one-on-one final in October.

One of the challengers is a homegrown one — the New York Yacht Club.

Now headquartered deep in the heart of Manhattan, hosting club regattas out of Newport, Rhode Island and having its racing team training in Pensacola, Florida, the club and America's Cup originator was initially based on the Hudson River. Its first clubhouse was in North Jersey.

Built in Hoboken in 1845, the Gothic cottage first stood by the waterside at Elysian Fields near the bluff that holds the Stevens Institute of Technology. John Cox Stevens, the club's first commodore, donated the land at the foot of 11th Street. His brother, Edwin Augustus Stevens, founded the university. Both were involved with the creation of the first winner of the America's Cup, a yacht named America.

America's Cup's founders

The brothers came from one of the most distinguished families in U.S. history. Their grandfather served in the Continental Congress, and their father, John Stevens, was a Revolutionary War colonel who became a pioneering entrepreneur and inventor of steam engines and boats.

From their mansion overlooking the Hudson River and Manhattan Island, the colonel and his sons developed the first steam ferry to cross the Hudson. When Robert Fulton secured a monopoly on Hudson River steamship navigation, the Stevens family shifted their focus to other lucrative ventures. In 1809, their vessel Phoenix became the first steamer to operate offshore when it began service in Philadelphia.

Five years earlier, in 1804, a 19-year-old John Cox Stevens piloted the first propeller-driven boat. Shortly thereafter, he built a sailing yacht called Diver and raced it against fishing and ferry boats in New York Harbor for wagers. In 1844, he and his friends founded the New York Yacht Club aboard his yacht, Gimcrack.

The modest clubhouse, relative to the club's current Beaux-Arts landmark in New York City, served as the center of club activities for 23 years, according to club records. That span covered the development, construction and trials of the yacht America.

America's Cup has North Jersey origins

America was designed by George Steers, a self-taught innovator of yacht design, to challenge the best in the United Kingdom. Its cotton duck sails were sourced from John Colt's mill in Paterson. When the yacht made it to the Isle of Wight, the Royal Yacht Squadron organized a fleet race on Aug. 22, 1851. The winner received a silver trophy valued at 100 pounds sterling. They called it the Hundred Guinea Cup. It is now known as America's Cup, after the yacht that won it.

Within two months John Cox Stevens and the syndicate that owned America had sold it and given the trophy to the club. The cup came with conditions. According to its formal Deed of Gift, it must serve as an everlasting prize for “friendly competition between foreign countries.” The cup's holder must welcome challengers.

The first challenger was the Royal Thames Yacht Club and a yacht called Cambria. The competition held in New York Harbor on Aug. 8, 1870, was won by the New York Yacht Club. The club went on to win every America's Cup match thereafter until 1983.

By then, the clubhouse was long gone. It survived calls for demolition in the early 20th century and in 1904 moved from its home just north of Castle Point in Hoboken to Glen Cove, Long Island to serve as "Station 10." At a time, there were 11 stations along the club's racing and cruising route for members to land and load.

The clubhouse moves from NJ to Long Island

For the second half of the 20th century, the clubhouse was on loan and on display at Mystic Seaport, the maritime museum in Connecticut. Since the start of this century, it has sat on the grounds of the club's racing base Harbour Court, in Newport, Rhode Island. The club's America's Cup yacht, called Patriot, was built and designed in Rhode Island.

A far cry from America, a 101-foot schooner that was used by the U.S. Navy during the Civil War, 75-foot-long Patriot relies on a pair of hydraulic hydrofoils on either side of the hull to seemingly fly above the ocean's surface at speeds of more than 50 miles per hour. Due to that technology, the modern America's Cup is a vastly different competition than it was just 20 years ago. Still, at its core, the cup remains an event where wind-powered vessels must chart an ocean course to victory.

The last cup was a disaster for the New York Yacht Club, which in team American Magic had one of three challengers for the title held by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. That cup's Patriot capsized in the round-robin qualifiers and, following major repairs, finished last in the event.

America's Cup 2024

This year, five challenger teams are taking on the cup holders from New Zealand. That includes American Magic and the new Patriot led by Olympic gold medalists Tom Slingsby (AUS) and Paul Goodison (GBR). The first look at them in action comes during the final America's Cup preliminary regatta on Aug. 22-25. The match racing event will feature four races per day, with the top two yachts, technically classified as AC75s, advancing to a one-race, winner-takes-all final.

The results of the preliminary regatta have no impact on the America’s Cup standings. Still, they are crucial for shaping team strategy.

The New Zealand team, as the cup defender, has a straight path to the America's Cup on Oct. 12-21. The five defenders, however, must face off in the Challenger Selection Series from Aug. 29 to Oct 7. for the fight to compete in the America's Cup best-of-13 match race final.

The races will be streamed free on the event’s website, YouTube and Facebook. Coverage is also available in the U.S. on ESPN+.

An attorney who helped acquit missing tech tycoon Mike Lynch among those feared dead in superyacht disaster

  • A yacht belonging to British tech executive Mike Lynch sunk off the coast of Sicily.
  • Christopher Morvillo, who helped Lynch win acquittal at a recent trial, and his wife are missing.
  • Morvillo, a former federal prosecutor, worked on high-profile corruption cases.

Insider Today

Among those missing and feared dead in the aftermath of the sinking of "Bayesian," a sailing yacht linked to British technology magnate Mike Lynch , are Lynch's attorney Christopher Morvillo and Morvillo's wife, according to a colleague. Lynch was reportedly on a cruise with friends and coworkers, including Morvillo, to celebrate his acquittal after facing prosecution for financial fraud related to the sale of his company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011. Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, as well as two others, are still missing.

Gary Lincenberg, an attorney who represented Lynch's co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain in the high-profile fraud case that recently ended with the acquittal of both men, said Morvillo and his wife "are presumed to be passed away" after the yacht went down near Sicily.

He said the news came shortly after he learned that Lynch's codefendant Chamberlain was killed, struck by a car while jogging on Saturday.

"In the course of 48 hours, I can't process what has happened, but both of our clients, as well as Chris and his wife, are gone," Lincenberg told Business Insider.

Lincenberg said in a follow-up email that Chamberlain "was a courageous man with unparalleled integrity" and that his acquittal preserved his good name, which would live on through his family.

Morvillo's law firm, Clifford Chance, didn't immediately reply to a comment request on Monday. One of Morvillo's family members declined to comment.

Before going into private practice, Morvillo was a federal prosecutor in Manhattan until 2005. He worked on several high-profile corruption cases and comes from a family of well-known New York white-collar attorneys.

Another attorney at the firm, Ayla Ronald, is reportedly among those who survived the yacht's sinking.
