Kimi Raikonnen Once Retired From The Monaco GP & Walked Straight To His Yacht

Kimi Raikonnen Once Retired From The Monaco GP & Walked Straight To His Yacht

Boss Hunting

Kimi Raikonnen – the Iceman himself – has long been known as both the most enigmatic and straight-shooting character in Formula 1.

From telling his race engineer mid-race “ Leave me alone, I know what I’m doing ” to justifying why he missed a speech by Pele with “ I was having a shit “, it’s pretty clear the Flying Finn does and says just about whatever he wants. Which is why the footage of Kimi Raikonnen retiring at the 2006 Monaco Grand Prix is the furthest thing from surprising.

The retiring Kimi Räikkönen once left the Monaco Grand Prix to drink beers in the hot tub of his private yacht

  • Kimi Räikkönen is retiring at the end of the F1 season, 20 years after making his debut.
  • Known as the Iceman, he once retired from the Monaco Grand Prix to sit in the hot tub of his yacht.
  • Räikkönen was pictured by TV cameras with his shirt off whilst the race was still going on.

Insider Today

F1's most experienced driver in the sport's history is retiring at the end of the season.

Alfa Romeo's Kimi Räikkönen announced Wednesday via Instagram that he was stepping away from the sport he has competed in since 2001.

"This is it. This will be my last season in Formula 1. This is a decision I made last winter. It was not an easy decision but after this season it is time for new things.

A post shared by Kimi Räikkönen (@kimimatiasraikkonen)

"Even though the season is still on, I want to thank my family, all my teams, everyone involved in my racing career and especially all of you great fans that have been rooting for me all this time.

"Formula 1 might come to an end for me but there is a lot more in life that I want to experience and enjoy. See you around after all of this! Sincerely Kimi," he said.

The Finnish driver was known for his quiet nature and his willingness to do what he wanted, when he wanted.

One particular moment that defined the character trait came in 2006 at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Driving for McLaren, his heat shield caught fire and he was forced to retire from the race. Instead of returning to his team's garage in the pits, Räikkönen headed for his private yacht which was docked nearby.

As his rivals continued to race, the TV feed cut to Räikkönen sitting in the boat's hot tub with his shirt off and drinking a beer.

Räikkönen is also the last Ferrari driver to win the world championship having beaten Lewis Hamilton by a single point in the driver's standings in 2007.

The most epic super-yachts at the F1 Monaco Grand Prix

Yachts routinely steal the show during the F1 grand prix weekend.

The yachts docking in the harbour for the F1 Monaco Grand Prix have turned heads - with a couple particularly impressing.

A yacht named Seven Sins caused a commotion because there is a Bugatti Chiron onboard.

The Seven Sins can be chartered for a week at a much more reasonable $300,000 but that doesn’t come with the Bugatti!

The car itself is worth around £2.5m and, now, there is one in full view in Monaco harbour during the F1.

A yacht named Evrima, owned by Ritz-Carlton, is being used by Lewis Hamilton , George Russell and Toto Wolff as part of their partnership with Mercedes .

Evrima is more of a floating luxury hotel than a boat.

Guests have voyaged around France before docking in Monaco for the coolest weekend of the year.

Rooms cost $10,000 to $100,000 for holidaymakers at this time of year.

If you want to charter Evrima, it will set you back $2.2m for a week.

It boasts 149 rooms, a private terrace for each suite, an infinity pool and even an onboard therapist.

It has direct access to the seawater, and watersports, from its deck.

The biggest yacht at the Monaco Grand Prix (so far) is actually owned by the Ritz-Carlton. • 149 Cabins • Pools, Spa & Gym • Rooms cost $10,000 to $100,000+ It's essentially a luxury cruise — you spend a few days in France and then dock in Monaco for the race. A superyacht named Faith has also docked in Monaco for the grand prix and it is known to some of F1's richest people.

The $200m yacht was previously owned by Lawrence Stroll, the current Aston Martin owner.

Stroll sold it to the billionaire father of former F1 driver Nicholas Latifi.

Faith has a helipad onboard plus a gym and a theatre.

And it's yours to rent for one week for a mere $1.5m...

A yacht named Lionheart is also turning heads in Monaco this year.

It was formerly owned by businessman Philip Green, and is valued at $150m.

Most famously, when Kimi Raikkonen was forced to retire early from the 2006 Monaco Grand Prix, rather than go back to his team garage he instead walked straight to the harbour to find his yacht.

Moments later, he was spotted lounging in the sun onboard his private yacht with his friends - with the F1 race going on without him.

Raikkonen enjoys convergence of Kimis at Monza

Phillip van Osten 06/09/2024 at 18:21 06/09/2024 at 19:37

Last weekend at Monza, two Kimis stood under the Italian sun in the F1 paddock their paths converging in a way that motorsport often orchestrates.

The younger Kimi, Antonelli, had crashed in FP1, a baptism by fire for a driver with a meteoric rise that culminated in a much-anticipated announcement: the 18-year-old charger would be Lewis Hamilton's successor at Mercedes in 2025.

Meanwhile, amidst the frenzy surrounding the Brackley squad’s recruit, Kimi Raikkonen, motorsport’s iconic 'Iceman', made a rare appearance in the F1 paddock on Saturday.

The 2007 world champion, 26 years Antonelli's senior, couldn't hide his amusement when informed of the announcement.

"Yeah, I heard," Raikkonen told F1.com , a hint of a smile playing on his lips. "When we came here, somebody said that they announced it!"

The Finn’s veteran eyes immediately saw the bigger picture.

"It's great," he continued. "A lot of new faces, I think, coming next year, a lot of new drivers that have been signed to F1. It's good for the sport, and it's also great to have an Italian in the championship. It's good for everybody, I think."

The 21-time Grand Prix winner, a man known for his blunt honesty, acknowledged the advantage Antonelli possesses compared to his own rookie days.

"I'm sure they know how to get him ready," he said. "Obviously, these days they have simulators. When I started, there was no simulator, you jumped in and got going!"

While the path to F1 has become smoother with advanced technology and testing opportunities, Raikkonen offered his characteristically pragmatic well wishes.

"I think it's much easier [to move up to F1] in many ways, now," he admitted. "You can do a lot of testing, obviously, and get ready. I wish them and all the rest all the best!"

Raikkinen was accompanied in Monza by his with Minttu, and two of their children, Robin and Rianna, in tow, showcasing a lively family life that keeps the 44-year-old plenty busy, especially with his son’s karting career gaining momentum.

“It’s been busy,” the 44-year-old former Ferrari driver confirmed. “We moved to Italy, I’ve been a mechanic for Robin, Rianna is doing gymnastics, and we have a small one [Grace], so a busy family life! But it’s been great.”

As he skillfully burns rubber on Italy’s karting tracks every weekend, does Robin have his sights set on following in his famous father's footsteps to F1 glory?

“Ah, he’s enjoying,” said Dad. “Everything is going nicely. We’ll see. If something comes or not, who knows? But he’s having fun – that’s the main thing.”

In his time in F1, Kimi Raikkonen has amassed a fortune driving for teams such as McLaren, Ferrari, Lotus, and Alfa Romeo. He has made several splurges from his net worth of $250 million, but the most attractive one yet has to be his yacht.

The Finnish driver bought a 33-meter Sunseeker Predator 108 in late 2008. Raikkonen’s ‘new toy,’ reportedly cost him $10 million, can be seen in the harbors of Monaco and Adriatic coastlines.

How Kimi Raikkonen earned his boat the name ‘one more toy’ in 2006

Before he bought a second yacht in 2008, he was involved in a famous incident with his first one at the 2006 Monaco GP. Raikkonen was having a fairly average season; his McLaren was accustomed to mechanical issues and reliability the entire season.

But then, at the 2006 Monaco GP, the Finnish driver made a blinding start and passed his rivals to move to P2. Unfortunately, he was hit by mechanical issues once again.

Kimi had had enough of this, so he parked his car at the Saint Devout corner and started walking through the tunnel. Everyone assumed that the driver was going back to his garage. But Raikkonen surprised everyone when he went straight to his yacht.

He joined his friends on the boat and partied his worries away. ” There is Kimi Raikkonen. He has not even got back to his paddock. He has got his shirt off, he’s on his boat which has a splendid name ‘one more toy’. Kimi’s with some of his best mates from Finland who have consumed their own weight in champagne and beer,” said the commentator.

It was reported at the time that he paid about 3.5m euros for a new 22-meter yacht.

10 of the best facts about Kimi Raikkonen

Kimi Raikkonen

Kimi Raikkonen

With Kimi Raikkonen announcing that 2021 will be his final season in Formula 1, PlanetF1 has dug out some of our favourite facts about the Finn.

He was torn between ice hockey and motorsport

Like many, many people in Finland, Kimi grew up with a love for ice hockey – so much so that, when he was young, he had serious trouble deciding whether to pursue a career in that or motorsport.

He did, of course, ultimately choose the latter, and had an excellent reason for doing so: “B ecause I didn’t have to get up early in the morning.”

It’s a decision-making method many a young person looking for a job or choosing which classes to take can relate to. If you are such a person and your parents criticise you for deploying it, just tell them Kimi did and things worked out all right for him.

Ron Dennis is behind his famous nickname

‘Iceman’ has become a term so synonymous with the Alfa Romeo driver that it is hard to imagine a time in his life when that was not his nickname. However, he did not actually get it until he met Ron Dennis.

It did not take long for the former McLaren boss to come up with it as he first coined the term at the start of Kimi’s first season with the team due to the Finn’s calm and often cold demeanour.

The Iceman was not actually his first nickname in the sport, with Peter Sauber and his team calling him ‘The Eskimo’ in an attempt to keep his identity hidden during his first F1 test to fend off interest from rival teams.

He is a record-breaker on and off the track

Kimi has broken a number of records during his 19 seasons in F1 and, as detailed in The Unknown Kimi Raikkonen, a biography written by Kari Hotakainen, it was a habit he picked up long before he joined the grid.

As is standard in Finland, he underwent 12 months of military service when he was 18. Once, he and a friend were drunk and returning late. In order to avoid being caught, they decided to climb the fence, but the friend was seen and caught. Kimi, meanwhile, hid in a ditch.

Once he thought the coast was clear, he climbed over the fence and set about crawling back to his barracks, but was ultimately caught too. As punishment, he was confined to said barracks for 20 days, setting a new record.

He is a massive James Hunt fan

#MonacoGP 2012 | Kimi Räikkönen's James Hunt helmet design pic.twitter.com/1dbqWIMwww — Kimi Räikkönen Fans (@iceman7news) May 24, 2017

Despite the fact Kimi was born three years after James Hunt won his only World Championship and five months after he retired, he is a huge fan of the Briton.

He has shown his admiration on a number of occasions, competing as James Hunt in snowmobile and powerboat races and wearing a helmet that had the same black livery as Hunt’s and even had the late great’s name on it at the 2012 Monaco Grand Prix.

In fact, he likes Hunt so much he has at times sought to emulate his famous rock and roll lifestyle away from the track…

He once partied for 16 days straight between races

It’s a well-known fact that Kimi enjoys a drink or two, but he took that to another level between the races in Bahrain and Spain in 2012 with an effort Hunt would have been proud of.

After he finished P2 in Bahrain, he and his friend, Finnish ice hockey player Kimmo Pikkarainen, celebrated and soon found themselves at a party hosted by the Prince. That kicked off a week or so of drinking that resulted in him injuring himself and missing a Lotus test.

He was not going to let that stop the party though as he then headed to Helsinki to celebrate May Day, and the days that followed it, just for good measure. Soon afterwards, he headed to Barcelona and, despite surely nursing a monumental hangover, scored another podium and drank some champagne.

He has never won the Finnish SPOTY Award

Most countries have a Sports Personality of the Year Award or something similar, and that includes Finland. Given everything he has achieved, you would think Kimi had won it at least once, but you would be wrong.

He came closest in 2007 when he became World Champion with Ferrari, but that was not enough for him to beat javelin thrower Tero Pitkämäki.

His failure to win it is made all the more surprising by the fact fellow Finnish F1 title-winners Keke Rosberg and Mika Hakkinen both did so. Still, we doubt he loses too much sleep over it.

He likes his yachts

#TBT to the 2006 #MonacoGP when Kimi Räikkönen retired from the race & walked straight to his yacht, in his racing suit 😄 #Kimi7 #F1 pic.twitter.com/KtGcxMs5XL — Kimi Räikkönen Fans (@iceman7news) May 24, 2018

One of Kimi’s most iconic moments came in Monaco in 2006 when, after retiring from the race, rather than returning to the paddock, he got out of his car and walked directly to his yacht, called One More Toy.

One More Toy has been seen in the Monaco harbour various times since then and he has also added a smaller one to his collection called the Iceman.

Apparently, while he has been busy racing around the streets of Monte Carlo all these years, people have paid to watch the grand prix from his boats and meet him afterwards. Quite the businessman.

He is the only driver to win in the V10, V8 and hybrid eras

Kimi Raikkonen

We have mentioned he has set a number of records in F1 and this is one of the perhaps slightly lesser-known but equally impressive ones.

When he joined the grid in 2001, F1 cars used V1o engines and continued to do so until the end of 2005. In that time, Kimi won nine races. V8 engines were then used from 2006 to 2013, a period in which he claimed victory on 11 occasions. Since then, V6 hybrids have been used and after a long wait, he finally won a race with one in 2018 in Austin.

It’s an achievement that shows just how long he has been around and how he has consistently remained at the top of the sport throughout his career.

He hates phone calls

Given his team radios, his interviews and his general demeanour, it is probably not surprising to anyone that Kimi is not a big fan of phone calls.

He especially hates them if there is no real purpose to them, as he stated in his aforementioned biography: “I can’t be bothered to answer when the voice at the other end says ‘it’s nothing really, I just called to ask how you were’.”

In fact, he cannot even stand them when the person on the end does have something rather important to say. After being told over a call that a deal had been reached for him to drive for Ferrari in 2014, he threw his mobile into the sea. Not sure why. Maybe the thought alone of all the congratulatory texts was too much for him.

He is the last Ferrari champion

Kimi Raikkonen

This is a well-known one, but one  Ferrari fans would have refused to believe if they had been told it back when he won the title in Brazil in 2007.

That season, he put together a monumental late run of form to pip McLaren duo Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton and become a World Champion, and nobody in red has been able to do that since.

Felipe Massa and Alonso both narrowly missed out in season finales, while Sebastian Vettel lost out twice in battles with the Mercedes of Hamilton. Clearly, Kimi is a tough act to follow…

Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari, 2007 Chinese GP

Former Scuderia Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen is often regarded as one of the standout Formula 1 drivers of the 2000s, known for his ability to compete with the best, including the legendary Michael Schumacher at the Maranello team, before his arrival at the Italian side. His lone world championship, won in 2007 during his debut season with Ferrari after replacing Michael Schumacher , stands as a testament to his resilience and perseverance. That year, despite experiencing his share of setbacks, Kimi Raikkonen’s determination and ability to recover quickly kept him in the title fight until the very end.

Facing a 17-point deficit with only 20 points left to fight for in the final two races, Kimi Raikkonen’s title hopes seemed all but lost. However, defying the odds and reversing the trends of the 2003 and 2005 seasons, he staged an incredible comeback to clinch the championship.

Raikkonen’s Unique Mental Edge

On Marc Priestley’s *Pit Lane Life Lessons* podcast, Mark Arnall, Kimi Raikkonen’s long-time performance coach, shed light on one of the Finn’s key advantages throughout his lengthy career: his exceptional mental strength.

Mark Arnall, a world-renowned fitness expert with a career in F1 that has spanned 26 years, highlighted Kimi Raikkonen’s ability to quickly move past disappointments, an asset that allowed him to stay focused and consistently perform at the highest level.

“Kimi was one of those drivers who was incredibly good at letting go of what had just happened,” Mark Arnall pointed out. “If a race didn’t go well, whether due to mechanical issues or his own mistakes, he’d be angry in the moment, but by the evening, it was over. It was done. He didn’t dwell on it. That ability to not look back or have regrets was one of his greatest strengths.” – he added.

A perfect illustration of Kimi Raikkonen’s mental resilience came on the streets of Monte Carlo at the 2006 Monaco Grand Prix. Driving for McLaren at the time, Kimi Raikkonen was forced to retire when his car’s heat shield exploded in spectacular fashion. Instead of dwelling on his misfortune, Kimi Raikkonen famously headed straight to a yacht in the harbor to relax, seemingly unbothered by the abrupt end to his race day. His calm demeanor after such a dramatic exit became iconic, showing his capacity to move on without regret.

That 2006 Formula One championship was tough for McLaren, and by 2007 the British team had brought in rising star Lewis Hamilton and reigning two-time champion Fernando Alonso. But neither could match Kimi Raikkonen’s mental toughness and performance that year, as the Finn overcame both to win his first and only world championship, defeating not only his new rivals but also his former team to secure Ferrari last Drivers’ title up to date.

Though Kimi Raikkonen never seriously contended for another Formula One title, with a fading challenge in 2008 and a resurgence in 2012, his legacy in the sport remains undeniable. His career inspired countless fans and cemented his reputation as one of Formula 1’s most mentally resilient drivers.
