Reviewed: Viking 46 Billfish

The Viking Yachts brand name is already synonymous with bluewater-capable sport-fish boats. The New Jersey boatbuilder’s 46 Billfish—the new flagship in the Billfish line that starts at 37 feet length overall—adds space and comfort.

Like its smaller siblings, the 46 Billfish has an open, salonlike command deck with a U-shaped lounge and dinette to port and a settee to starboard. There is canvas aft instead of a solid bulkhead; skippers can open it to enjoy the sea breeze or seal it and pump in air conditioning. Rod stowage is under the seating, and the command-deck design lets hardcore anglers walk in from the cockpit and relax for a moment or two without having to worry about tracking fish gore onto a carpet. Every square inch of the command deck can be washed down.

Down in the main cabin, however, is high-gloss teak cabinetry with a galley to starboard, a head with a walk-in shower to port, and a pair of over-under berths for a quick nap between bites or on overnighters. Forward, the owner’s stateroom has a queen-size island berth, a hanging locker, and an entertainment system with a stereo and a flat-screen TV.

As nice as the interior might be, the anglers among us will be spending a lot more time out in the 140-square-foot cockpit. Sure, there are tuna-size fish boxes in the deck, a transom livewell, freshwater and raw-water washdowns, and rod holders at every turn. What really grabbed me back here, however, was the split mezzanine. Fun fact: When kicking back on the port side, the bridge-deck ladder makes for a well-placed footrest. I’d wager that crew members will be vying for that spot when the long run home from the canyon begins.

But that run won’t be nearly as long with the optional 800 hp I6-800 MAN diesels. (Twin 715 hp Cummins diesels are standard.) Cruising at 1,800 rpm, the 46 Billfish clips along at 28.9 knots. Fuel burn at this speed—the most efficient for the boat—is 44 gph, and range is 442 nautical miles, or 0.7 nm per gallon based on the vessel’s 632-gallon fuel capacity. Push the throttles down till the tachs read 2,100 rpm, and the 46 skirts across the brine at 35.1 knots while range drops to 379 nautical miles and the engines consume 64 gph. During our best speed run, I saw a top hop of 41.7 knots.

High speed is one thing, but high speed through the open ocean is an entirely different story. When we ran the 46 Billfish into the open Atlantic, there was a tight, 2- to 3-foot chop out of Absecon Inlet in Atlanic City, New Jersey. Heading directly into the slop at a normal cruise was smooth. In the mid-30-knot range, I wanted to hold on a bit, but I was comfortable and would be ready to drop lines in at the edge before I knew it. What about blasting through the seas at full tilt? That was just plain fun. The same goes for running in a beam sea, with the optional Seakeeper 6 gyro spooled up and roll virtually eliminated.

Also fun: Making this boat dance. I could back down at 8 or 9 knots with no water coming into the cockpit. Split the throttles into forward and reverse, give it a shot of juice, and the boat pirouettes like a 43,000-pound ballerina. Yes, our 46 had a bow thruster, and no, we never really felt the urge to use it.

As an owner-operator, I would feel right at home. Standing at the helm, there were unobstructed views of the bow and stern, and my crew could transit safely from the cockpit to the bow with handholds stretched along the side.

And speaking of maneuvering around the boat, I also liked how the bridge was laid out with the centerline helm console and flanking port and starboard lounges. There’s enough room forward of the console for guests to move around without the captain having to move too.

If the Viking Billfish line’s past performance is any indication, then the 46 Billfish is poised to do well. It’s a canyon-capable craft with speed, comfort and a big-game pedigree.

Every latch, hatch and door in the cabin locks firmly in place. While running across the ocean, I took a walk belowdecks to look for things like swinging doors or drawers that were sliding open, both of which are common issues on more common boats. I found none, nor did I feel or hear any excessive vibration, rattles or creaking.

Built to Last

The 46 Billfish is constructed with many of the same yacht-quality systems and construction methods—such as Delta T engine-room ventilation—found on Viking’s larger models. The engine room itself is coated in Awlgrip. Throughout the boat, end-grain balsa and closed-cell foam are used for coring, and the hull-to-deck joint is mechanically fastened and fiberglassed shut.

Like a Glove

The forward engine-room bulkhead on the Viking 46 Billfish is a case study in yacht wiring. Every strand is well-loomed, supported and marked. Not only will wiring like this increase the boat’s reliability and longevity, but it will also make repairs and equipment replacements easier. Inside the helm console, where the console itself protects the wiring, Viking installed water-resistant connectors with protective rubber boots.

The compact flybridge on the Viking 46 Billfish features a tournament-style walk-around helm station with enhanced visibility and a Release Marine chair, as well as a pair of side chaise-longue sofas and a Costa Clear protective cover. The helm boasts a glazed teak dashboard, a stainless-steel power-assisted steering wheel and instrumentation installed by Atlantic Marine Electronics featuring Garmin equipment. All of the electronics from the Viking Yachts shipyard are installed by AME, their subsidiary partner.

At 140-square foot the cockpit will always feel roomy even when hauling big catches in through the transom door and lift gate. The cockpit boasts side fish boxes large enough to host tuna, a transom fish box and live-well with water pump access, rod holders, tackle storage, a bait freezer, hosepipes for fresh or raw water and a floor plate for custom fighting chairs and bespoke rocket launchers. There is also ample seating out here in the form of two raised mezzanine seats with backrests up against the cockpit dividing wall, while surfaces come either in authentic striped teak or glossy fiberglass.

The internal cockpit is a clean, minimalist and air-conditioned space with a starboard side sofa and, to port, a U-shaped dining sofa surrounding a teak hi-lo dining table. This internal space remains superbly well-lit with natural light thanks to curved, wrap-around windows across the front and sides, but also features LED inset lighting should you remain on board at night. At the front is a water-tight tempered glass door leading to a surprising amount of luxurious lower deck rest and relaxation room. To starboard there is a well-equipped galley with Antico flooring, Corian worktops, a two-burner Kenyon grill, a combination oven, a fridge and an icemaker. There is also a main head down here with a shower cubicle, a side bunk berth for two overnight guests and a roomy master stateroom with a queen-sized bed and a hanging closet.

The Viking 46 Billfish comes equipped with a Cummins QMS11 engine as standard, but many buyers choose to upgrade to MAN 16 850CRM engines for top speeds of 40 knots. Comfortable cruising clocks in at around 35 knots, more than quick enough to keep up with the feistiest bluefins in the ocean, while at 25 knots the yacht has an ocean-going range of around 440 nautical miles. A composite V-hull provides superb balance and durability in a range of conditions, making this yacht an ideal fishing vessel across both inshore and offshore bodies of water.

So it should come as no surprise that for every new Viking introduced, our in-house design and engineering teams have other models waiting for their turn in the spotlight.

Such is the case with our Billfish series. It is with great pride that we introduce our 46 Billfish. “Our history has been to give our owners room to grow within a particular Viking family of boats, whether you’re talking about our convertibles, our open express and sport boats or our motor yachts,” says Viking Design Manager David Wilson. “Now we’re simply following through with this type of product growth and diversity with the Billfish. We’re extremely excited, and are sure these boats will meet and exceed all expectations.”

The 46 BF will excel as either an owner/operator or captained Viking. Offering simplicity and ease of maintenance, she’s a ready-to-go fishing machine equipped for inshore and offshore missions as well as a versatile cruising boat with reliable inboard diesel power.

Cockpit & Command Deck

The 140-square-foot cockpit has room for the entire crew or family. The cockpit sole is built with a laminated in-deck mounting plate for fighting chair, rocket launcher or table installations. Standard equipment and features include a cockpit bait freezer with upper tray, in-deck insulated fish boxes port and starboard with overboard drainage, a walk-through transom door and lift gate, a transom fish box and live well, rod holders, tackle storage and fresh and sea-water wash downs. Two-person, mezzanine-style seats flank the centerline walkthrough, and there’s refrigerated drink storage in the starboard mezzanine step, as well as ample general stowage throughout.

The 46 Billfish’s command deck can be completely enclosed and is climate-controlled. “It’s perfect for anglers who want to get off their feet and cool down as the boat moves from one spot to the next,” says David. The command deck features a salon-like living area with a roomy U-shaped lounge and hi-lo table and a lounge that extends along the starboard side. Both seating areas hold rod storage underneath.

Like our legendary Viking convertibles, the 46 Billfish’s flybridge is designed with a tournament-style center console walk-around helm. The 46 Billfish has Palm Beach-style controls and power-assist hydraulic steering. Seating includes a single Release Marine teak chair (a second helm chair is optional) and lounges to port and starboard and a forward console seat. Our subsidiary Atlantic Marine Electronics can build and install a complete package of navigation and communication equipment to deliver the boat turnkey ready.

Accommodations

Rest up and recharge in the 46 Billfish’s air-conditioned cabin. Featuring high-gloss teak cabinetry and custom Amtico flooring, the fully appointed starboard-side galley has an L-shaped Corian countertop, a two-burner electric stove, a microwave/convection oven, cabinet storage and under-counter drawer-style refrigeration with a built-in ice maker. The private head, which is conveniently located immediately to port of the companionway stairs, has a large walk-in shower with satin nickel fixtures, an attractive Corian-topped vanity with sink and storage and a medicine cabinet with mirrored doors. Easily accessible upper and lower bunks on the port side await weary anglers, and there’s a hanging locker only a few steps away. The first-class accommodations continue in the private forward stateroom, with its island queen bed, a hanging locker, upper storage cabinetry and a flat-screen TV with stereo, speakers and DVD player.

Efficient and Durable

As Viking continues to develop the Billfish series, our building methods and materials have gained efficiency, which adds even more value to these boats. A modified vinylester resin is used in the entire hull skin. End-grain balsa and closed-cell foam are used as coring materials in selected areas for optimized strength and stiffness while minimizing weight. The integral fiberglass fuel tank, sealed to the hull with resin foam, is resin infused with balsa coring on all sides for stiffness. The hull-to-deck joint is mechanically fastened every three inches and fiberglassed inside.

Viking Engineering

The Billfish is designed and built with many of the same mechanical systems, components and technologies found on larger Vikings. Examples include the Delta-T engine room ventilation system and a fire suppression system that’s automatically or manually operated and tied into the main engine and generator ignitions.

Running gear includes Class “S” pitch tolerance propellers with dynamic balancing and bronze struts, seacocks and rudders.

The engine room, lazarette and forward bilges are painted with Snow White Awlgrip for increased visibility and ease of maintenance. A large centerline hatch gives you quick access to the engines and optional Seakeeper SK 6 gyro. Twin Cummins QSM11 715MHP diesels provide the standard power for the 46 Billfish, while twin MAN I6-800 CRM 800MHP are optional.

So it should come as no surprise that for every new VIKING introduced, our in-house design and engineering teams have other models waiting for their turn in the spotlight.

It is with great pride that we introduce our 46 BILLFISH. This model will excel as either an owner/operator or captained Viking. Offering simplicity and ease of maintenance, she’s a ready-to-go fishing machine equipped for inshore and offshore missions as well as a versatile cruising boat with reliable inboard diesel power.

The 140-square-foot cockpit has room for the entire crew or family. The cockpit sole is built with a laminated in-deck mounting plate for fighting chair, rocket launcher or table installations. Standard equipment and features include a cockpit bait freezer with upper tray, in-deck insulated fish boxes port and starboard with overboard drainage, a walk-through transom door and lift gate, a transom fish box and live well, rod holders, tackle storage and fresh and sea-water wash downs. Two-person, mezzanine-style seats flank the centerline walkthrough, and there’s refrigerated drink storage in the starboard mezzanine step, as well as ample general stowage throughout.

The VIKING 46 BILLFISH command deck can be completely enclosed and is climate controlled. It’s perfect for anglers who want to get off their feet and cool down as the boat moves from one spot to the next. The command deck features a salon-like living area with a roomy U-shaped lounge and hi-lo table and a lounge that extends along the starboard side. Both seating areas hold rod storage underneath.

Like our legendary Viking convertibles, the 46 BILLFISH FLYBRIDGE is designed with a tournament-style center console walk-around helm. The VIKING 46 BILLFISH FB has Palm Beach-style controls and power-assist hydraulic steering. Seating includes a single Release Marine teak chair (a second helm chair is optional) and lounges to port and starboard and a forward console seat. Our subsidiary Atlantic Marine Electronics can build and install a complete package of navigation and communication equipment to deliver the boat turnkey ready
