Built On Trust

Long before Kadey-Krogen became a leading bluewater trawler brand, before the massive port city of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, became Asia’s biggest yacht manufacturer, before a family-owned company called Asia Harbor Yacht Builders became the exclusive builder of Krogen and Summit models—well before these evolutionary milestones—there was a meeting of visionary minds.

As the story goes, the year was 1973, and the place was the boat show in Annapolis, Maryland. Builder Lin Kao Shui, steeped in boatbuilding methods unique to his country, had one of his commissions shipped to the other side of the world and on display at the biggest annual nautical event in the United States at that time.

Marine engineer and yacht broker Art Kadey, on the hunt for a comfortable and safe recreational bluewater cruising trawler, having already convinced naval architect Jim Krogen during a meeting to work up a few sketches of a “salty and seakindly” design for his personal use, was drawn to Lin’s full displacement trawler yacht. At the Annapolis show, he showed it to Krogen.

“Art Kadey and Jim Krogen saw the boat my father constructed and came to Taiwan’s Chung Hwa Yacht Shipyard to find him,” recalls general manager Jeff Lin, Lin Kao Shui’s son. “They started negotiations for future contract manufacturing. That laid the intial foundation for Kadey-Krogen yachts.”

With the support and encouragement of the American duo, Kao Shui Lin ultimately progressed from contractor to factory owner. In 1988, the family-run Asia Harbor was officially established, and in 1991, it became the exclusive manufacturer for Kadey-Krogen. “In 1992, we purchased the land and facilities we are currently using,” Lin says. “I started working at Asia Harbor in 2007, and my father retired officially in 2010.”

Today, as the parties prepare to celebrate a half-century-long collaboration, almost 700 long-range yachts ranging from 36 to 58 feet have been built, and there’s no end in sight—evidenced by the new Krogen 60 Open under construction, and the Summit Motoray series.

“Kadey-Krogen’s 50th anniversary in 2026 is a milestone and holds significant meaning for our relationship,” Jeff Lin says. “We’ve consistently delivered yachts that meet Kadey-Krogen quality standards of craftsmanship and expertise. The longevity of this partnership demonstrates mutual trust, cooperation, and successful collaboration. It not only celebrates our past achievements but also opens doors for future opportunities and growth. Our story is one of fruitful cooperation and bonds of mutual trust.”

Then and Now

Skittering over an ocean of important and interesting formative events, these are the key scenes of the partnership story. But it’s also fun to reminisce about the details and learn more about Asia Harbor Yacht Builders today.

Back then, knowing that the emerging recreational trawler market had few players, and that few builders had tapped into recreational passagemaking construction, the newly formed Kadey-Krogen, with Lin at their side, took the plunge.

The Kadey-Krogen 42 launched in 1977 and her robust construction resembled commercial shrimp trawlers built to respect the sea and ride out any conditions. The hull and cabin sides of the Krogen 42 were built of fiberglass-sandwich construction with closed-cell PVC foam core; heavy, hand lay-up using mat and roving. The buoyant composite structure insulates for shock, sound, and temperature, and provides for a quiet, comfortable ride. To date, the 42 is Kadey-Krogen’s best-selling model, with 206 built over the decades.

“Initially, our factory didn’t even have overhead cranes,” Jeff Lin says. “The installation of any equipment or major parts onto the boats had to rely on manual labor or separate crane services. The process of tooling was also different compared to now, where we use 3D software in conjunction with CNC cutting machines.”

Previously, experienced craftsmen would scale the designs to their actual sizes based on blueprints, and cutting and assembly were done manually. And the equipment installed on the boats was quite different. “In the early days, the yachts we built only had the main engine and generator installed as mechanical equipment,” Lin recalls. “Other equipment and appliances were installed in the United States. Nowadays, almost all the yachts manufactured by Asia Harbor are equipped with a full range of equipment at the factory.”

Guiding Principles

Over time, quality over quantity emerged as the most important factor to Asia Harbor Yacht Builders. “Taiwan has already achieved a considerable level of expertise in yacht construction, so we cannot compete with other countries solely based on price,” Lin says. “Our only choice is to continuously enhance our capabilities and construct yachts that meet higher standards to cater to the demands of our experienced clients.”

With years of industry experience and a highly knowledgeable team, Asia Harbor enjoys a deep understanding of the subtle nuances of yachts—as well as of owners.

“We approach every aspect of yacht design and construction with meticulous attention to detail,” Lin says. “From selecting high-quality materials to achieving exquisite craftsmanship and perfect harmony, we strive for exceptional quality. We also understand that each yacht owner has unique tastes and preferences. We, together with The Kadey-Krogen Group, offer a variety of customization options, allowing owners to personalize their yachts according to their specific requirements and desires. This flexibility ensures that every yacht we build embodies the owner’s individual style and preferences.”

Building Better Boats in Taiwan

Incentives from the Taiwanese government help support the growth of the nation’s yacht building sector. According to Lin, this encompasses infrastructure development; training and education; and promotion and marketing:

  • Infrastructure development —The government has invested in the development and upgrade of yacht marinas, ports, and related infrastructure to provide better facilities for yacht owners, operators, and tourists. “This includes expanding berthing capacity, improving navigation channels, and enhancing service facilities,” Lin says.
  • Training and education —The government has collaborated with industry associations and educational institutions to provide training programs and courses for yacht design, construction, operation, and maintenance. “This helps to cultivate skilled talents and enhance industry competitiveness,” Lin adds.
  • Promotion and marketing —The government actively promotes Taiwan as a destination for yacht building and yacht tourism through various marketing activities, participating in and presenting international boat shows, and organizing yacht-related events. “This helps to increase awareness and attract domestic and international customers,” he explains, adding that “these incentives collectively aim to support the development of the yacht industry in Taiwan and position Taiwan as a competitive player in global yacht manufacturing.”

Asia Harbor Yacht Builders employs approximately 80 workers. It conducts comprehensive programs to ensure employees have the necessary skills and knowledge to carry out their jobs. Training encompasses product knowledge, operating techniques, and quality control, among relevant areas.

“Our employees typically work within the same factory and are assigned to different areas or departments based on their functions,” Lin says. “This enables convenient and efficient organization of workflow. We also promote cross-departmental collaboration and resource sharing to reduce costs and maximize personnel utilization. For example, in our company, employees in the varnish department also have the skills to perform FRP lamination and gelcoat repairs.”

Process and Priorities

At Asia Harbor’s yard, carpentry plays the most significant role, from placing bulkheads, stringers, soles, and decking, to interior joinery, exterior hardware installation, radar arch, hardtop, and finally, the installation of appliances, cabinet doors, and drawers. “All of these tasks are completed by carpenters, so we place special emphasis on their training and development,” Lin says.

Systems testing, an equally significant component of the yacht construction process, takes place before boats are shipped, focusing on every component. “The majority of ships undergo land-based testing at our yard,” Lin explains. “Our testing focuses primarily on the systems and equipment. The checklist includes propulsion systems, electrical systems, navigation systems, communication systems, and heating/cooling air conditioning systems. We collaborate with engineers from equipment suppliers to perform the tests, record data, and make improvements for any deficiencies identified.”

Of the range of models the yard has built, spanning from less than 40 feet to 70 feet, two stand out: the 42, Kadey-Krogen’s most popular model in terms of units sold, and the 58. These two successful models share differences and commonalities that showcase what goes on at the yard in terms of processes, hull materials, fit, and finish.

For Lin, the 42 is what he personally considers the most iconic of the company’s models, while the 58 demonstrates that Kadey-Krogen and Asia Harbor have taken the game to another level of technical expertise.

“In the early stages, when we were constructing the 42 and the 44, we were able to purchase all the materials for 10 boats at once because we were focused on mass production,” Lin says. “But the 58 is different. As the flagship model at the time, we started offering customized options to buyers. This allowed us to have a clearer understanding of market demands and equipped us with the capability to face challenges more effectively.”

Lin attaches more memories to other models.

“The ones that stand out are the twin-engine 48-40 that I built with my father in 2007, 44-31, the 600th yacht of Kadey-Krogen in 2014, the customized construction of the 58-22 in 2017, and the lightweight Summit 54-foot motoryacht,” he says. “The building processes of these boats have been truly rewarding for me.”

And setting the course for it all are dual sentiments of collaboration and trust.

“I am delighted to have this opportunity to share the story of Asia Harbor,” Lin says. “I feel honored to continue building Kadey-Krogen Yachts, and it brings me great pride.”

More Info: kadeykrogen.com

Kadey-Krogen Yachts recently and rather quietly announced the exciting addition of the Krogen 52′ yacht, another model in its line of pure full displacement trawler yachts. Following the great success of the Krogen 58′, the fifty-two foot model offers much of the same impressive architectural elements featuring roomy living areas and a raised pilothouse.

The Krogen 52′, like every other yacht made by Kadey-Krogen during the last two decades, will be built in Kaohsiung, Taiwan at the Asia Harbor Yacht Builders Co. , LTD.

Kadey-Krogen, headquartered in Stuart, Florida with satellite sales offices in Maryland and Washington states, took a very different approach to announcing their new yacht. Plans were taken to the yearly Trawler Fest in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and within a little over a week of its exposure, five hulls were quickly reserved and the first is expected to be completed and in the United States by the summer of 2011.

The Krogen 52′ will be available in either single or twin engine configurations and both will feature the company’s exclusive and innovatively designed counter-faired keel, which first made its debut on the Krogen 58′. The keel utilizes a counter rotation of flowing water forced into the ship’s propeller, which results in a straighter outflow of water that in turn, improves the forward thrust and creates more economic fuel consumption than conventionally designed keels.

In the Krogen 52′ with the standard engine, power will come from a John Deere 6068AFM75 231 hp engine and the dual engine model, the yacht will be powered by two John Deere 4045TFM75 engines each producing 121 hp. The yacht will be capable of holding 1,400 gallons of fuel and boast a range of more than three thousand miles cruising at seven knots with a top speed of 9.5 knots.

Upon first boarding the Krogen 52′ luxury living will be evident to guests. The aft deck is completely covered and leads the way to the large saloon accessible through welded aluminum doors that are weather tight. Moving starboard, guests will enter the spacious gourmet galley that will be complete with full sized Jennair refrigerator and a Viking range.

Heading portside from the galley are the stairs leading to the pilothouse that feature a solid banister for safety. In the pilothouse visitors will find two helm chairs, a first for a yacht of this size that allows both the ship’s captain and their first mate optimal visibility.

Owners of the Krogen 52′ will have their choice of either a two or three cabin arrangement based on their personal preferences and both options will feature the master stateroom forward. With the two cabin layout, owners will enjoy a dedicated office space, and both layouts will feature two heads each with an enclosed shower making the Kroger 52′ an elegant, functional, and architecturally magnificent yacht.

Kadey-Krogen Yachts announces the introduction of the Krogen 48′ AE to its fleet of Pure Full Displacement TM Trawler Yachts, once again setting a new standard for capability and liveability in the trawler market. In deciding what to name the successor to the venerable Krogen 48′ North Sea, the company chose the AE designation as an abbreviation for Advanced Ergonomics, the underlying theme in this new offering. Like every Kadey-Krogen yacht for the past 20 years, the Krogen 48′ AE is being built at Asia Harbor Yacht Builders Co., LTD, in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Hull number 48050 will be the first in the AE series.

New Krogen 48' AE trawler motor yacht galley by Kadey-Krogen Yachts

Successor to the Krogen 48′ North Sea

“Owner feedback has been essential to the development of the Krogen 48′ AE,” says Larry Polster, Vice President of Kadey-Krogen Yachts. “Our owners are the ones out there living the lifestyle so we trust the feedback they provide will make our boats even better for the next generation of Krogen owners. As an example, the expanded galley with the four burner Viking range seen in the last few Krogen 48′ North Seas was born from owner feedback and one of those boats won the People’s Choice award at Trawler Fest this past summer.”

Like all Kadey-Krogens, the Krogen 48′ AE motor yacht features a fully covered aft deck or “back porch” as the owners like to call this multi-purpose space. Moving forward through the welded aluminum weather tight doors, one immediately begins to notice the Advanced Ergonomic nature of the design. To starboard there is either an “L” shaped or “U” shaped settee along with a table that both expands, raises and lowers so it can perform the dual functions of coffee table or a dining table for eight. To port there is room for two full-sized chairs as well as a clear pathway to the galley and beyond.

Forward and to starboard the large Krogen 48′ AE trawler yacht galley features a four burner Viking® range, household size refrigerator/freezer, convection microwave and room for both a trash compactor and dishwasher. In addition to the abundance of storage in the galley, there is a nearly floor-to-ceiling pantry opposite on the port side.

Moving up to the pilothouse, the Advanced Ergonomics concept really begins to take hold; here owners will find steps. Real, wide and deep steps like in a house with a rock solid banister for safety. The pilothouse on the Krogen 48′ AE has been completely redesigned to accommodate side-by-side helm chairs as well as a larger electronics console.

The ergonomic theme continues through the pilothouse portside welded aluminum weather tight door to the boat deck and flybridge via molded steps, again with a handrail for safety. The boat deck of the motor yacht Krogen 48′ AE is large enough to accommodate both a 13-foot tender as well as a summer kitchen. On the flybridge, the helm (with enough room for two helm chairs) is off to starboard with an L-shaped settee to port that extends the entertainment space of the boat and makes cruising on the flybridge more comfortable for guests.

Owners will have a choice of two or three cabin arrangements with the master being forward to maximize natural light and ventilation. The starboard cabin on both arrangements has a dedicated desk allowing this cabin to double as an office. Two heads are standard, each with a separate stall shower.

While the advanced ergonomics are the cornerstone of the Krogen 48’ AE, they are certainly not the only highlight. There will be bright but efficient LED lighting both inside and out and the running lights will also be LED. The temperature in the engine room/machinery space will be controlled by two axial fans with moisture eliminators which will provide an abundant supply of dehumidified air to the 201hp John Deere Engine. Range is over 3,000 miles at 7 knots.

The hull is built using vinyl ester and isophthalic resins, knytex mats, and US-made Cook UV-protected gel coat. Critical areas of the hull are reinforced with a special impact-resistant fiberglass mat containing Twaron, the same fiber used to give body armor its “bullet-proof” capability. Twaron is an aramid fiber that is five times stronger than steel and up to 60% lighter than ballistic steel. This strong yet light fiber helps maintain a moderate displacement-to-length ratio that is a signature of Kadey-Krogen engineering and results in better fuel economy.

The Krogen 48’ AE will debut at Trawler Fest in Fort Lauderdale January 27-29 and can also be seen at the  Miami International Boat Show at Sea Isle Marina February 17-21.

Kadey-Krogen Yachts currently builds trawler yachts from 39 to 64 feet.  The company’s headquarters is located in Stuart, FL, with additional sales offices in Annapolis, MD, and Seattle, WA.

Although the SUMMIT 54 isn’t cruising the world’s waterways yet, the builder claims a 26-knot maximum speed and a 330-nautical mile range at 23 knots. The current plan calls for twin Cummins QSB diesels with engine access via a transom hatch that leads below. This relatively zippy performance is a departure from the traditional trawler philosophy of 8- to 12-knot cruising speeds.

However, above the waterline the SUMMIT 54 is very much made in the trawler “you can have it all” style. You’ve got a large swimstep off the stern, which leads into a covered cockpit with dining table and mini bar. Two walkways lead forward to the massive open foredeck. The foredeck, as is the fashion these days, has a large sun lounge area, bench-style seating, and even a retractable canvas cover to spare guests from the elements.

SUMMIT 54 Interiors

The flybridge with hardtop is accessed from the cockpit via a set of steps. There’s the classic trifecta up here: helm station, entertaining space, and dinghy with davit. Some combos are just too good to mess with.

Summit 54 specs

The interior layout is completely open and nearly single level save two steps up between the salon/galley and the helm. Unlike some modernist yachts, the SUMMIT 54 retains the helm in the cabin, and it’s situated near the main interior dining table. No lonely helmsmen on this yacht. Below are the berths and heads. The standard layout has three staterooms and two enclosed heads.

We look forward to seeing a SUMMIT 54 in action. For now, we join the excitement for what looks to be a Kadey-Krogen-inspired Yacht with a modern, sporty look and performance. If interested in more information and pricing, you can contact local dealer Stan Miller Yachts .

Kadey-Krogen Yachts debuts Krogen 48ft AE yacht

Kadey-Krogen Yachts debuts Krogen 48ft AE yacht

US-based Kadey-Krogen Yachts has introduced Krogen 48ft Advanced Ergonomics (AE) yacht to their fleet of Pure Full Displacement Trawler Yachts.

‘Advanced Ergonomics’ is the underlying theme in this new offering. The Krogen 48' AE is being built at Asia Harbor Yacht Builders Co., LTD, in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

The latest 48ft Kadey-Krogen yacht design is introduced to raise the bar and set a new standard for capability and liveability in the trawler market. The fully covered aft deck leads to the salon where either an L- or U-shaped settee is starboard, with an expandable table that raises or lowers for dining or cocktails.

The expanded galley with a four-burner Viking range and other household-size appliances is complemented by a nearly floor-to-ceiling pantry opposite, on the portside. Moving up to the pilothouse there are real steps, deep and wide, with a rock-solid banister for safety. The ergonomic application continues through the pilothouse and out the portside welded aluminum weather tight doors leading to the boat deck and up to the flybridge via molded steps with accompanying handrail.

Owners have a choice of two- or three-cabin arrangements with the master forward to maximise light and ventilation. The starboard cabin in either arrangement has a built-in desk and can double as an office. Two heads are standard, each with a separate shower stall.

Bright, efficient LED lighting is used inside and out, including the running lights. The engine/machinery room is ventilated by two axial fans with moisture eliminators.

The Krogen 48' AE will debut at Trawler Fest in Fort Lauderdale from 27-29 January 2011 and can also be seen at the Miami International Boat Show at Sea Isle Marina from 17-21 February 2011.

Asia’s Yacht Builders: Thriving Home and Away

  • March 25, 2021

Shipyards in Asia are expanding their range of yachts at both ends of the size scale, diversifying into power and sailing catamarans, and including this region among their target markets, as profiled in Yacht Style’s annual feature on Asia’s builders.

asia harbor yacht builders

CL Yachts’ current flagship, the CLB88, pictured in Hong Kong

CL  Yachts is showing its flagship CLB88 and hull six of its popular CLB72 at this year’s Palm Beach International Boat Show in Florida (March 25-28) as the brand from the historic Cheoy Lee yard headquartered in Hong Kong continues its remarkable journey.

However, CL Yachts is also using the year’s first major international boat show to reveal more details of its upcoming CLB65, which will be its new entry-level yacht and is being produced in the shipyard’s main production facility west of Zhuhai.

Set to debut in the fourth quarter of 2021, the CLB65 features a RINA-certified resin-infused composite hull designed by Howard Apollonio of Apollonio Naval Architecture in collaboration with structural engineer Gurit, the two design offices who both worked together successfully on the CLB72.

The CLB65, which can be CE certified upon request, features strategic use of carbon-fibre, while the first unit will be configured with twin Volvo IPS1050 pods and feature an at-rest electric fin stabiliser.

asia harbor yacht builders

CL Yachts’ entry-level CLB65 is set to launch in late 2021

CL Yachts has designed the exterior and layout in-house, with an aft galley among notable differences to other models in the CL Yachts range, while the “light and airy interior design scheme” is by Interiors by Carmen, which also worked on the CLB72. Notable features include opening saloon windows, while the lower deck features three staterooms and a convertible crew cabin.

As well as developing its smallest model, the builder has been constructing its biggest model, with the much-anticipated CLX96 on schedule to launch this summer before it travels to the US for its world premiere at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show from October 27-31.

The yacht is the first to feature both an exterior and interior by Milan-based Jozeph Forakis, while Americans Earl Alfaro and Albert Horsmon are responsible for naval architecture and structural engineering respectively.

Billed as an ‘SAV’ (Sea Activity Vessel), the CLX96 features a ‘workboat chic’ profile defined by trawler-style, reverse-angle windscreens on the main and upper decks. The reverse-angle design is even mirrored at the aft end of the main-deck superstructure, ensuring the yacht stands out from its competitors.

asia harbor yacht builders

The CLX96 is set to premiere at October’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show

Other distinctive features include a vertical bow and a teardrop-shaped hull that’s wider in the forward part than the aft, while cleverly designed exterior spaces include the foredecks on both the main and upper decks, known as Piazza del Sole and Terrazza Portoghese respectively.

“The design is unique, fresh, modern and exciting, and challenges the perception of what people expect from a motor yacht,” Forakis said. Like the CLB88, the CLX96 is expected to move from the Zhuhai shipyard and make an appearance in Hong Kong before heading to the US. Also like the CLB88, the CLX96 has been crowned at the Good Design Awards organised by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design.

Martin Lo, Director of CL Yachts, said: “At CL Yachts, we are thrilled to be back-to-back Good Design Award winners. Not only is it a prestigious honour but two consecutive wins validates everything we’ve been doing so far. We began this journey three years ago with a strong vision: to advance the luxury experience for modern explorers. Jozeph Forakis and his design team understood this vision and continue to exceed expectations every time.”

asia harbor yacht builders

The CLB72 is CL Yachts’ most popular model; hull three is pictured in Hong Kong

Meanwhile, hull seven of the CLB72 is scheduled for sea trials from April before it heads to Hong Kong and then the US shortly afterwards. The CLB72 was the brand’s second model, after the CLA76, and has proved its most popular so far, with Apollonio developing the concept and exterior styling, as well as working with Gurit on the RINA-certified, resin-infused composite hull, which can reach 31 knots with twin Volvo IPS1350 1,000hp engines.

All CL Yachts models are built at Cheoy Lee’s 12-hectare shipyard on the Pearl River in Zhuhai, which includes 85,700sqm of covered production facilities that support construction in steel, fibreglass and aluminium.

KINGSHIP’S CAT POWER

Kingship Marine, also headquartered in Hong Kong with a shipyard in the Greater Bay Area, is developing a range of KingCAT power catamarans that span in size from the 55 and 85 models to the enormous KingCAT 138. The shipyard plans to first build the KingCAT 55, with an expected launch in 2022.

asia harbor yacht builders

The KingCAT 85 is part of Kingship’s new powercat range

The company was founded in 2004 by Roger Liang and has its main production facility in Zhongshan, just north of Macau and a ferry ride from Hong Kong. Liang was involved in Italian shipyard Baglietto in the 1980s and Green Bay Marine in Singapore in the 1990s before creating Kingship.

Kingship works with several of the world’s leading brokerage companies including Northrop & Johnson, Camper & Nicholsons and Denison Yachting, and has a strong background in superyachts, having built a range of models from 89-137ft featuring naval architecture by renowned Dutch firm Vripack.

Its current projects include the Grand Voyager 144, which has an overall length of 43.9m, naval architecture by Horacio Bozzo and a range of 5,500nm at 15 knots.

asia harbor yacht builders

Kingship built a towering 78ft powercat for a China client

In 2019, Kingship delivered a towering 78ft tri-deck powercat that has been used privately on a lake in China, although the shipyard’s primary business has been building commercial craft including large, high-speed catamaran ferries. These include powerful 42m models with a cruising speed of 33-35 knots that provide the underlying hull shape and platform for the KingCAT 138.

Kingship has a new range of smaller boats for the Asia-Pacific market including a 42ft landing craft-style yacht, a 39ft offshore expedition centre console with a top speed of 50 knots, and a 40ft displacement cabin-cruiser design that offers very economical performance. It also plans to offer yachts and boats with electrical-propulsion systems certified by CCS (China Classification Society).

asia harbor yacht builders

Kingship is building a Grand Voyager 144 superyacht

In addition to new builds, the shipyard is a specialist in refit and repair, with extensive experience of working on boats ranging in size and style from a Swan 82 sailing yacht and a 25m wooden motor yacht to several superyachts up to 49m.

Kingship can build and work on yachts up to 500GT, as the Zhuhai site features seven 50m weather-controlled sheds and a Syncrolift that can take yachts up to 60m. The company is currently in the process of applying for a permit to install a fixed and floating dock, with the latter allowing for 60-80m boats to be built and repaired at the yard.

HEYSEA’S SUPER MODELS

Heysea remains mainland China’s most prolific superyacht builder and has been a fixture in the top 30 of the Global Order Book since 2014, ranking 17th in the 2021 edition. Founded in 2007 and based in a 66,700sqm facility in Jiangmen in Guangdong province, Heysea has had a remarkable year since the previous edition of this annual feature.

asia harbor yacht builders

Heysea staff with the Asteria 126

In March 2020, the yard launched its first Asteria 126, fitted with twin 1,925hp Caterpillar engines. That same month, the company sent masks to its friends in the UK, Slovenia, Australia, Italy, France and the USA to help them during Covid-19.

In the second quarter of the year, HeySea launched hulls nine and 10 of its remarkable Asteria 108, a model fitted with either twin 1,800hp or 1,900hp Caterpillar engines for a top speed of 22-23 knots. The ninth hull was delivered to her owner at the Sevenstar Yacht Club in Shenzhen, while hull 10 headed to Hong Kong.

asia harbor yacht builders

Heysea delivered a 43m powercat to an owner in China last year

In July, it handed over its biggest-ever yacht, the 43m Yu Feng Zhe 1 , a champagne gold-coloured, steel-hulled 701GT power catamaran with twin Volvo 725hp engines built for an owner in Shenzhen.

In mid-October, Heysea attended the four-day SMC International Yacht Show in Shenzhen, where it showcased hull nine of the Asteria 108. It also unveiled details and designs for the Seaview 56, an 18m sailing catamaran with an 8.8m beam featuring an exterior by Bill Dixon and an interior by Paolo Dose of VYD (Venetian Yacht Design).

asia harbor yacht builders

Today, the builder offers models across five series: Asteria superyachts (96, 108, 112, 116, 118, 126, 142), Zoom motor yachts (58, 76), Seaview sailing cats (56), Heysea CAT powercats (70) and Full Custom, with projects including Yu Feng Zhe 1 under the project name Vista 43M.

The yard’s current projects include the first two hulls of the Asteria 142, while it’s also developing a design for a potential 56m project.

asia harbor yacht builders

The first Seaview 56 sailing cat by Bill Dixon could launch this year

Heysea remains committed to having a presence at international boat shows and intends to return this year to the likes of Sydney, Fort Lauderdale and Cannes, where Chairman and co-founder Allen Leng was present in 2019 when the builder exhibited for the first time, with a booth. Leng, who majored in naval architecture and ocean engineering, has been Vice-Chair of the ISO’s Large Yachts division since 2018.

SKAYR’S SLEEK STYLE

Meanwhile, SKAYR Yachts is developing the aluminium-hulled SKR 40 Renanda, a design unveiled late last year. It’s named after Indonesian designer Raul Renanda, an architect, artist and sculptor whose recent work includes the sailboat-influenced Sjuman+Renanda concert grand piano designed with award-winning composer Aksan Sjuman.

SKR, and SKAYR, both represent the initials of the company’s principals – Managing Director Firman Santoso, naval architect Nino Krisnan and Renanda. Since initial designs were revealed for the 40ft sports cruiser (YACHTS, Issue 55) , the layouts have been refined for the cockpit and interior, which includes a stylish, air-conditioned double cabin, head and shower.

asia harbor yacht builders

SKAYR is developing the aluminium-hulled SKR 40 Renanda

Furthermore, the propulsion system has been revised to feature twin 480hp Volvo Penta IPS650 engines, which are expected to produce a top speed of 40 knots. There will be the option of genset and battery, to offer silent operation at anchor and reduce the carbon footprint.

Once the designs are finalised, the first unit could start building in Europe in the second quarter of this year and launch in the third quarter of 2022, while SKAYR is considering also developing a model in the 50-60ft sector.

The SKR 40 Renanda will be targeted at clients in Asia, Europe and North America, with SKAYR potentially exhibiting with a booth and scale model at the Cannes Yachting Festival this September. www.clyachts.com www.kingship.com www.heyseayachts.com www.skayr.com

Haute Yachts: Introducing the VanderArk 47 Sport Trawler

Diane M. Byrne

Luiz De Basto is perhaps best known for his design work in the megayacht end of the pleasureboat realm. However, he has styled the exteriors and overseen the interiors of yachts measuring less than 100 feet, too. In fact, one of his latest projects is well under the 100-foot mark, yet should capture no less attention. The VanderArk 47 Sport Trawler marks the first model in a new boat brand. In addition, and equally important, she’s a fresher approach to the traditionally conservative lines and performance of long-range cruisers.

De Basto is collaborating with Krogen Design on behalf of Asia Harbor Yacht Builder s , the same Taiwan-based yard that builds the well-known Kadey-Krogen Yachts. In fact, the Kadey-Krogen and Asia Harbor ties extends to Krogen Design, too, as it’s a naval-architecture and marine-engineering firm renowned for its work with those firms on trawler yachts.

For the VanderArk 47, James S. Krogen , the principal of Krogen Design, created an efficient planing hull. The boat should be comfortable in a variety of sea conditions, in keeping with her trawler heritage. However, the sporty side comes through in the expected top speed of 24 knots and anticipated cruising speed of 20 knots (perhaps even a bit higher). That sets her apart from traditional trawlers, which are designed to achieve far slower speeds. Power for the VanderArk 47 comes courtesy of twin 480-hp Yanmar engines.

Inside, the VanderArk 47 emphasizes clean looks. Cherrywood will line the walls from the full-beam (15-foot, 7-inches) saloon on the main deck to the staterooms below decks. Two staterooms are available, though if you plan to cruise with more people, the saloon and pilothouse each have settees that convert to berths. The flying bridge will be a great spot to drive the boat or simply enjoy the view while cruising. A sunpad on the foredeck will keep sun-worshippers happy. Meanwhile, the covered aft deck will provide welcome shade on sunny days.

Kadey Krogen Yachts for Sale

Kadey krogen trawlers for sale.

Krogen history began in 1976 when marine engineer Arthur Kadey approached naval architect James Krogen to design a 42-foot displacement trawler yacht for his personal use.

Kadey had the boat built in Taiwan, and by 1978 the two had teamed up to form Kadey-Krogen Yachts with the idea of building and marketing the boat in the US. The Krogen 42 Trawler became a landmark design, remaining in production until 1998, some 203 boats later.

During the 1980s Krogen introduced several new models, the most notable being the popular Manatee 36.

In 2006, company ownership was acquired by John Gear, Larry Polster, and Tom Button. Kadey-Krogen yachta are built at Asia Harbor Yacht Builders in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Kadey-Krogen is headquartered in Stuart, FL,, with regional offices in Annapolis and Seattle. The company markets its boats through select regional offices.

There is a [Talk through] video tour for this boat located lower on this page.

Lady Di is a no-nonsense, simple and elegant Kadey-Krogen 39.  She is hull number one, a 1998 model year making her the first in the series followed by fifty sister ships before rising costs forced this popular design to cease production. Economical, efficient and practical, the KK39 is particularly appealing for first time trawler owners or a couple contemplating a 50’ or smaller sailboat, but who are unwilling to give up the comforts of home that fit into this well-defined package.  This is a boat that has been designed to be the best possible platform for two people and there are no compromises in build quality, she is the equal in fit and finish of her larger siblings crafted in Taiwan by Asia Harbor Yacht Builders.

Lady Di was originally named “Number One” she was introduced as the cover story and feature article with photos in the Winter 1998/1999 PassageMaker magazine that heralded her arrival.  Bill Parlatore who wrote that story had an interesting observation, “The Krogen 39 is a trawler designed for KISS passage making. Keep things simple. If you can resist becoming best friends with your local marine store when you outfit the boat, and instead go slowly during the outfitting process, you will be one happy couple with an exceedingly happy boat.”

A true full displacement, long range trawler, she is ideal for a cruising couple. Lady Di has travelled the US west coast from Mexico to Alaska and now rests at her dock on the San Francisco Bay.

Several Krogen 39’s have gone on extensive passages, with standard fuel topped off and running at 6 knots she has a realistic range of over 4,000 miles!

Her looks are timeless, inside and out.  She has been maintained in beautiful condition by her current (second) owners who always send in oil samples after each change to make sure her John Deere main engine is healthy.  Very few production trawlers can boast a reputation of being an easy vessel for a couple to manage and look after by themselves, the Krogen 39 fits this description.

Boarding aft (from the swim step or dock) you enter the cockpit which is covered overhead and includes teak decking underfoot.  There are side decks port and starboard that lead up to the foredeck.   On top, the flybridge has a folding canvas Bimini top with outboard seating on each side. The boat deck is aft with the dinghy mounted fore/aft and the mast and boom provides antenna mounting and serves as the dinghy launching davit. You access the boat deck / flybridge from a ladder in the cockpit.

Entering through the saloon door you will appreciate the fantastic visibility to the outside through teak framed opening windows and will be greeted by a warm teak interior. There are built in settees port and starboard with comfortable Ultrasuede upholstery and a teak parquet floor. The galley is forward to starboard lined with white Corian counters and white laminate verticals to keep it light and easier to clean. There is an opening portlight outboard to provide both a view and ventilation.

The engine room is under the saloon and has stand up 6’ plus headroom as you enter and plenty of access to move around once inside.  There is a work table area with room for storage of oil, filters, tools, etc. Neat installations of machinery and hose runs are evident.

Moving forward and up some steps to the pilothouse you pass an outboard locker with a louvered door that conceals the combo clothes washer/dryer. The pilothouse has an impressive view making operations underway very easy to manage and includes doors to the outside decks port and starboard.  There is a wide and comfortable settee with a table aft and the forward nav/com dash has a large teak steering wheel on centerline. The flooring is teak and holly and the rich teak joinery in the pilothouse is complemented by white surfaces and white overhead with an opening hatch.

Inside and down some curved steps from the saloon deck is the head and shower to starboard.  The full beam master with island queen sized walk around bed is surrounded by teak lockers and doors.  Varnished teak ceilings outboard combine with white laminate to make this room feel spacious and an overhead hatch plus outboard opening portlights provide ventilation.

Lady Di is ready to go cruising and priced to move quickly.  One last observation from Bill Parlatore in his PassageMaker article when she was new, “You really can’t get much smaller and still have a vessel with the range and capacity for heading across an ocean in comfort.”   Please contact the listing broker for a visit as all showings are by appointment only.

Travel Tips to Kabardino-Balkaria: More than Mt. Elbrus!

If you’ve traveled to the North Caucasus before, there is a good chance you’ve already been to Kabardino-Balkaria, and you didn’t even know it!  Kabardino-Balkaria lies in the center of the North Caucasus region, is home to Mt. Elbrus, but more than that is a treasure chest of travel possibilities.  Here is our guide to traveling through the republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, or 9 travel tips to this beautiful land:

1. How do I get there?

Kabardino-Balkaria hosts a large number of both foreign and Russian travelers every year, and has an improving infrastructure able to handle the incoming masses.  Let’s start with the obvious.  You might be a mountain climber or skier coming to enjoy the slopes of Mt. Elbrus.  That means you’re likely arriving on an airplane to Russia.  Here are your travel options:

A. Plane – We advise you fly into the Mineralni Vodi (MRV) airport in the Stavropol Region, which is about 45 minutes from the border of Kabardino-Balkaria.  MRV is the largest airport in the North Caucasus, and has daily direct flights to and from all 3 airpots in Moscow (SVO, DME, and VKO), direct flights from St. Petersburg, and several international flight routes as well, including from Istanbul, Dubai, Greece, Tel Aviv, and Bishkek.  The MRV airport has a growing infrastructure and is the most obvious choice to fly into if going to Elbrus.  From MRV, it’s a 2 hr. drive to Nalchik, and a 3.5 hr. drive to Mt. Elbrus.

That being said, the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria, Nalchik (NAL), also has a small regional airport with a daily flight to/from Moscow as well as weekly flights to Istanbul. As is to be expected in most smaller, regional airports around Russia, the service standard at a small airport like this will be minimal.  As a result, we recommend you flying in and out of MRV if able.  It’s a 2 hr. drive to Elbrus from Nalchik.  You can also fly into other regional airports which are 2 hrs. from Nalchik, such as OGZ in North Ossetia (Vladikavkaz) or IGT in Ingushetia (Magas).

B.  Car/Public Transport – If you have a car, are using a taxi, or are hitch-hiking your way to Kabardino-Balkaria, the region is accessible by a variety of roads and vehicles.  A major Russian federal highway E50 runs through Pyatigorsk into Kabardino-Balkaria, and can take you towards Mt. Elbrus, Nalchik, and deeper into the North Caucasus.  There are daily mini-buses, or “marshrutkas”, that travel to Nalchik from Pyatigorsk, Vladikavkaz, Grozny, and Magas, if you’re coming from a neighboring republic.  From the main Nalchik bus station, there is a marshrutka that goes to Terskol (i.e. Mt. Elbrus) daily around 12:30 pm; for that matter,  marshrutkas run daily into every valley of this beautiful republic.  For the seasoned international traveler, you can drive from the country of Georgia up the famed “Georgian Military Highway” through the heart of the Caucasus Mountains, cross the border into Russia at the “Verkhni Lars” border stop, and be in Nalchik in about 2.5 hours as well.

asia harbor yacht builders

Anyone traveling on their own should download the “Yandex” taxi app, which is Russia’s version of Uber, and has a very user-friendly app with affordable prices.  In smaller villages/towns where Yandex’s service doesn’t reach, just ask a local and they’ll direct you to a friend or relative who can taxi you where you need to go!

C.  Train – Kabardino-Balkaria is also very accessible by the famous cross-country Russian train system if that’s your preferred method of travel.  Almost all trains to the North Caucasus pass through Mineralni Vodi in the Stavropol region to the north, so make sure wherever you are coming from, Mineralni Vodi is one of the stops.  Despite Nalchik having a train station, the city is about 45 minutes from the main railway route that runs diagonal through the North Caucasus, and as a result it’s a bit convoluted to get a train directly to Nalchik.  That being said, the town Prokhladni is a regular stop on trains going to/coming from Baku, Makhachkala, Grozny, Nazran, and Vladikavkaz, so you can always hop off there and find your way by public transport or taxi.

2.  What are the best places to stay?

This list could get exhaustive, fast. 🙂  Let’s first look at an overview of the republic’s geography, followed by hotel recommendations:

A. Nalchik – This is the capital city of Kabardino-Balkaria, with a population of around 250,000.  Nalchik is growing and new, modern hotels are being built regularly.  Here are some of our recommendations:

-Modern and comfortable:  Azimut , Butik Otel

-Budget with less frills:  Hotel Rossia , Korona

You could comfortably spend a week in Nalchik, while doing day trips into Kabardino-Balkaria’s beautiful mountain valleys.

B.  Baksan Valley – This is the most traveled road in Kabardino-Balkaria, the road to Mt. Elbrus.  If you have questions about its safety because of travel warnings, please see our detailed blog here of the drive to erase any doubts or fears.  Needless to say, because of the draw of Mt. Elbrus, there are a huge variety of lodging options at the end of this valley, from 4-star to mid-range to budget to hostel.  Here are just a few we’ll recommend from our experience:

-Modern and comfortable 4-star-ish:  Azau Star , Kristall 139

-Budget with less frills 3-star-ish:   Laguna , Povorot

If you’re a mountain climber with your sites set on the summit of Elbrus, you’ll have to spend at least 3-4 nights at Elbrus’s famous base camp at 13,000 feet.  The “barrel huts” are not easy to book directly with, and we highly recommend you do your climb (and hence, have your bookings handled) through a trusted climbing company.  Here are two shelters at base camp we recommend:

-Modern and comfortable:  Leaprus

-Budget with less frills:  Heart of Elbrus Lodge

If you’re interested in climbing Mt. Elbrus and staying in these barrel huts, click  here  to see our climbing itineraries, pricing, and group dates.

C.  Chegem Valley – Chegem Valley is the adjacent valley to Elbrus’s Baksan Valley, and is famous for its beautiful waterfalls as well as being Russia’s top paragliding location.  The “ Paradrome ” has modest accommodations for those wanting to get to know this beautiful valley for a longer period of time.

asia harbor yacht builders

D.  Upper Balkaria, or Cherek Valley – This is another beautiful mountain gorge not too far from Nalchik.  There is an authentic lodging complex in Upper Balkaria called Tau-El, with amazing local food for meals as well.

asia harbor yacht builders

E.  Border Zone lodging – Several of Kabardino-Balkaria’s mountain gorges run into the border zone with neighboring country Georgia, i.e. an area that foreigners cannot enter without a special permit from the local government (often taking 2 months to receive).  There is a famous mountaineering lodge in Bezengi Valley, where several generations of Russian mountain climbers have honed their craft in the Caucasus Mountains.  Perpendicular to Baksan Valley (about 25 minutes from the base of Mt. Elbrus) is Adyr-Suu Valley, where there is a lodge for back-country skiers to stay, while trying their hands (and feet!) on the untouched snow of that valley.  Both these valleys require border permits for foreigners, but are possible to access for the more adventurous!

3.  Top cities to visit?

Most locals would agree that Nalchik is the main city of significance to visit in Kabardino-Balkaria, but let’s be honest, even more would say, “Just go to the mountains!”  Tirnauz is the capital of the Elbrus district, and is an interesting town to spend some time in, with its unique location in the mountains and place in Soviet history as a once-booming mining town.  The main thing to consider in visiting Nalchik and other cities in the lowlands, is the chance to experience Kabardian culture and food.  Whereas the deeper you go into the valleys, the more you’ll encounter Balkar culture and food.

4.  Best local foods to try?

There are 3 types of food that come to mind, when spending time in Kabardino-Balkaria:

A. Khychiny – This is one of the staple national dishes of the Balkar people, and what you’ll inevitably be served if guests of local Balkars.  It’s a thin buttery flat bread, sometimes cooked with fillings of cottage cheese, fresh greens, or potatoes.  It is often slathered in butter, but wow is that some tasty greasy goodness! 🙂

asia harbor yacht builders

B.  Shashlik – Shashlik is a MUST for any visit anywhere in the North Caucasus!  Most people would agree that it’s the national food of the entire region.  Shashlik is meat shish kabobs; while pork and turkey can be found in some parts of the Caucasus, lamb or chicken are the preferred shashlik meats of choice in Kabardino-Balkaria.

C.  Soup – No matter where you are in Russia, you’re sure to find a local soup that people love.  Kabardino-Balkaria is no different.  Especially in the winter months in the mountain valleys, there’s nothing better than to come inside from the cold weather and warm your body up to a bowl of hearty Caucasus soup.  Whether Georgian kharcho or local Balkar lakhman, make sure to try your hand at one of these soups with a side of fresh baked bread/lavash!

asia harbor yacht builders

5.  Top Hole-In-The-Wall restaurants:

Of course, for a republic of this size, we’re bound to leave at least a few great local joints off our list, but here are a few to get you started. ***Note:  Restaurants in the North Caucasus are much better known for their food than their service, so prepare for tasty food, but manage your expectations about service:

-Elbrus – Kogutai Restaurant at Mt. Cheget – While this isn’t a hole-in-the-wall restaurant per se, it’s one of many to choose from in the Cheget tourist village, and we have found them to provide consistently good food and service.  Kogutai has a nice interior, and maybe most important, an English-language menu with good pictures. 🙂  There also is a nice outdoor patio with fantastic views of the surrounding mountains.

-Nalchik #1 – Tameris Restaurant – This is a cafe with a relaxed atmosphere in the capital Nalchik.  Local tour company Elbrus Elevation has taken foreign groups there on multiple occasions and always had good experiences.  Address is ul. Kuliyeva 3.

-Nalchik #2 – Cafe-Bar Oasis – You have to know where this restaurant is to find it, but once inside, you won’t regret it!  There is a unique cafeteria-style ordering process, that includes several dishes being cooked on the spot once ordered.  You can sample local Kabardian dishes here.  The seating area is very modern and a pleasant atmosphere to have a meal in.  Address is ul. Kuliyeva 2.

-Upper Balkaria – Tau-El Restaurant – This is the restaurant part of the Tau-El Tourist Complex in Upper Balkaria.  Whether spending the night or just passing through, make sure to stop here for a meal!

6.  Must-See Sites

This republic is so chock full of “must-see” destinations, it’s impossible to narrow the list down.  Here are just a few suggestions to get you started: (***Mt. Elbrus is a no-brainer and we’re assuming that’s on your list)

A. El-Tyubu and Paradrome – This is an amazing area towards the end of Chegem Valley.  Many tourists visit the famous Chegem Waterfalls and don’t drive any further down this gorge, which really is a shame.  El-Tyubu is a picturesque Balkar village with several historical sites to see, including some ancient mausoleums.  The real gem of the area, though, is the Paradrome , which is Russia’s premier paragliding destination.  The combination of the scenic surrounding mountains and constant winds produces almost daily conditions to sail through the beautiful Caucasus sky.  Highly recommend!

asia harbor yacht builders

B.  Upper Balkaria – Also known as Cherek Valley, the entire drive to the actual village of Upper Balkaria is one big destination.  First, you can spend time at the 3 consecutive “ Blue Lakes ”, one of which is one of Russia’s deepest lakes with an underground spring.  Then, the drive itself becomes an adventure, as you pass by steep rock walls with a huge drop-off on the other side.  If you’re able to walk this part of the road, that is a bonus!  Once you’ve made your way through the valley walls, the region opens up into a beautiful panoramic view.  Many years ago, there were multiple villages in this region, but they’ve since been condensed into one main village.  You can see some of the ancient Balkar towers that their ancestors used to live in as well.

C.  Djili-Suu – Although hard to pronounce and not easy to get to, Djili-Suu is one of those places in the North Caucasus that people rave about that you “have to” visit.  It’s actually on the North side of Mt. Elbrus, and more accessible from the Mineral Waters region (2 hrs. from Kislovodsk).  The base camp for Elbrus climbers summiting the mountain from the North side is at Djili-Suu.  This area is famous in Russia for its numerous natural healing springs, as well as unique climate conditions that make for beneficial, long holidays for seeking a respite from their daily grind.  There are wide swaths of land available for camping, with probably the most unrivaled views of Mt. Elbrus in the North Caucasus.  Make sure to check this out!

7.  Off-the-beaten path destinations

asia harbor yacht builders

A. King’s Waterfalls (Tsarskie), or Gedmisht – Probably the valley in Kabardino-Balkaria with the least amount of hype is the Malka Valley, which is the northernmost valley and mainly runs through the Kabardian lowlands.  At the point where the villages end, though (Khabas), the asphalt turns into dirt and the hills start to rise, culminating with the incredible King’s Waterfalls, or as one friend put it, Avatar Waterfalls.  These stunning waterfalls are best visited in the early summer, when everything is lush green and the water flow is strong, with many streams of water flowing down the earth’s surface.  The different colors are incredible and it’s hard to look away.  Once you’ve enjoyed the waterfalls, enjoy a meal of shashlik at one of the nearby lunch huts.  Having an off-road vehicle is ideal to visit these falls, but worth the time and effort!

B.  One-seater chair lift at Elbrus – As the infrastructure at Mt. Elbrus has modernized, some of the more “authentic” experiences have gone to the way-side.  This is one experience still available, though!  From the 2nd (11,000 ft.) to 3rd level (12,500 ft.) of Mt. Elbrus (whether skiing, going to base camp, or just touring), there is a single-seater chair lift for 100 rubles each way (less than $2).  This is an amazing experience if you have the time.  It’s 8-10 minutes each way, and a surreal experience of the majestic Caucasus mountain range surrounding you, skiers silently passing you by underneath, and in general enjoying the silent expanse of nature all around.  The chair lifts are from the Soviet times and so it feels like something from a different era.  For mountain climbers, the newer group cable car gives better access to most of base camp, but several huts are pretty close to this chair lift, so it still may be a good option for you.

C.  Abandoned Mines above Tirnauz – Tirnauz is about 1 hr. from Mt. Elbrus, and a town everyone drives through to and from the mountain.  Although today it looks old and half-abandoned, it was a booming mining town in the 20th century.  About a 45-minute drive above the city with an off-road vehicle, you can see the remains of the mining operations.  Learning about this history combined with the breath-taking views of the Baksan Valley and even into Georgia, you’ll wonder why more people aren’t visiting this place.  This is a great spot to see eagles soaring in the sky, as well as admire the Soviet city plan of Tirnauz from above.

8.  What do I need border zone passes to visit?

In Russia, any area within 5-10 km of a neighboring country, without a clearly delineated border (i.e. in the mountains) is considered a special border zone, and patrolled by Russian border guards.  This area IS accessible to all Russian citizens with their passports, but is NOT legally accessible to foreign citizens UNLESS you have a special permit from the FSB (Federal Security Bureau).  These permits are accessible, either through a tour operator or local friend, but require you to submit your application 45-60 days in advance.

Areas in Kabardino-Balkaria that are worth a visit if you have a border zone pass:

A.  Bezengi Wall – This is at the end of the Bezengi Valley, and holds a place of lore among Russian mountain climbers.  Many mountain guides go through training in this valley.  Five of the Caucasus Mountain’ range’s highest seven peaks are a part of the Bezengi Wall, so you can imagine the draw it has for climbers. There are great areas for trekking and camping in this area.

B.  Adyr-Suu Gorge – This remote valley runs perpendicular to Baksan Valley and is about 25 minutes from the base of Mt. Elbrus.  It’s marked at the entrance by a relic of the past, a car lift from Soviet days that auto-cranks your car (and you) about 50 meters up the mountain.  After 45-60 minutes of driving on gravel road, the gorge opens up into a flat valley with a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains.  The Adyr-Suu Alpine Lodge is at the end of this valley and where back-country skiers base out of during the acclimatization phase of their Mt. Elbrus ski tours.  This is truly a place where you can experience untouched powder!

asia harbor yacht builders

C.  Mt. Cheget (Elbrus) – Cheget is a neighboring mountain to Mt. Elbrus and where many climbers will acclimatize, both at its base and while doing some hikes.  It also is famous in Russia for its free-ride terrain for more experienced skiers.  Standard access to the chair lifts and mountain are available to all (i.e. mountain climbers don’t need to worry about accidentally crossing into the zone), but anyone wanting to summit the peak of Cheget OR visit the beautiful Cheget Lake needs a border permit.

asia harbor yacht builders

Foreigners violating the border zone areas is considered a serious offense in Russia; make sure to do your due diligence if wanting to visit one of these areas!  We highly recommend using a local tour operator and always traveling with a local person if visiting one of these areas.

9.  Any cultural “do’s” or “don’t’s” to be aware of

asia harbor yacht builders

Kabardino-Balkaria is a fascinating republic with a combination of traditional and modern society.  The more you interact with local people, the more you’ll see a mixture of Muslim faith, post-Soviet mentality, and ancient local traditions all wrapped together.

Kabardians mainly live in the lowlands (Nalchik, Baksan, and lowland villages), while Balkars primarily live in the mountain valleys (Elbrus, Chegem, Upper Balkaria, etc.).  There is a large population of Russians in the region as well.  Foreigners visit every area of the region regularly, and so local people are used to and will welcome your presence.

Come with an open mind to learn about these peoples, their traditions, and their land.  You won’t regret your trip to Kabardino-Balkaria!

Visiting Russia - Nalchik, Capital of Kabardino-Balkaria

Nalchik, capital of Kabardino-Balkaria

Visiting Russia – Nalchik

Yoshkar-ola | cheboksary  |  astrakhan | elista | stalingrad (volograd)  | abakan  |  nalchik  | validkavkaz  | makhachkala  |  grozny.

Nalchik is a small city of around 240,000 people and serves as the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria, one of the lesser-known republics spread across the beautiful North Caucasus area of Russia, the mountain range that separates the former soviet states of Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan from the Russian Federation.

This region has incredible diversity in ethnic groups and is a melting pot at the edge of empire. While there have been civilisations in the Caucasus for millennia Nalchik as a city is only a century old, having been a Russian fort since 1724. Today’s Nalchik is a mostly peaceful and relaxing place, being in the foothills of the mountains it has many areas of great beauty and multiple sanatoria for people looking to take the waters, over the last century it has certainly had its share of turbulence though, being occupied by Romanian troops fighting on the side of the Nazis, who embarked on an effort to exterminate the ancient community of Mountain Jews in the area (unsuccessfully), plus a 2005 Islamic militant attack on Russian security forces.

These days Nalchik is known as a clean city, a place for relaxing, and the starting point of expeditions to summit Mt. Elbrus, the tallest mountain in Europe, which lies within Kabardino-Balkaria.

Kabardians make up the largest ethnic group at just under 50% of the city’s population, followed by Russians, Balkars, other Caucasian nationalities as well as Ukrainians, Mountain Jews still live in the area but in very small numbers now, most having emigrated to Israel.

Nalchik

Arriving/Departing

Nalchik Airport (NAL) is a small one but is fully functional for getting in and out, usually the foreigners arriving here will be mountaineers heading for Elbrus.

The Airport is only 3km from the city centre so you could even walk into town from here, otherwise, there are taxis and marshrutkas waiting for arrivals. Flights arrive only from Moscow and St. Petersburg usually, the Caucasus has other larger airports for other international flights (such as those to Sochi). Nalchik has a railway station, dating from 1915, with links to Moscow and across the Caucasus. A good option for travelling around the region in a relaxing manner (usually slower than taking a marshrutka between cities though) For getting around inside Nalchik there are public buses all over the place, easy to use and very cheap. Otherwise most of the centre is very walkable, the main ‘high street’ is Lenin Avenue, which runs for several km through the centre of the city.

Nalchik

Concord Square

The centre of Nalchik and a good place to start a walking tour of the city, with the Kabardino-Balkaria parliament building on one side and Lenin stands at the other, fountains in the middle and Lenin Avenue cutting through the square

Religious Buildings

The central buildings of the main religions practised in Nalchik are both fine examples of their respective architectural styles; the Central Mosque and the Cathedral of Mary Magdalene are both worth visiting. Dress codes apply.

Not actually in Nalchik, but only 50km or so away so the city is the ideal base for starting an expedition. This is Europe’s highest mountain and a dormant volcano. There are cable car/chairlift options to get t the top for those who don’t wish to do it the hard way. It is possible to get up and down this mountain n a single day, making it certainly the simplest of the 7 continental highest peaks to climb.

Museum of the Kabardino-Balkar Republic

Great for explaining where you are and the history of the area. Mostly in Russian only though and does tend to assume some knowledge in advance. Still a good stop to get some intro into the complex history of this city and area in general.

Atazhukin Garden

A large park complex running for more than 2km along the eastern side of the city, alongside the Nalchik River. A very pleasant place with so much to see and do. The basic Nalchik Zoo is here, walking trails, restaurants and cafes, theatres, a very retro funfair, and a rickety but reliable cable car running up to a lovely viewpoint to see over the city and out to Mt. Elbrus.

Topped by a restaurant building built in the shape of a Kabardian warrior. An excellent few hours can be spent exploring this park and mingling with the locals of all ages who do their relaxing here.
