Season 2: 1960–61, guest stars, female guest stars, male guest stars, further reading, external links.
In the series, Captain Grey Holden and his crew navigate the vessel called the Enterprise principally along the Mississippi , Missouri , and Ohio Rivers . Some episodes are set in the eastern end of the American West or in the Midwest . Holden and his men encounter interesting characters along the way, including U.S. President Zachary Taylor , General Winfield Scott and a prepresidential Abraham Lincoln . One episode focuses indirectly on the Texan Revolution of 1836. Unlike most Westerns, which are set after the American Civil War , the story's time frame precedes the conflict, and includes the 1830s and the 1840s. The series ended on the NBC midseason schedule in January 1961, replaced by a drama about the sectional conflict, The Americans .
Darren McGavin played Captain Grey Holden for 40 episodes. Dan Duryea played Captain Brad Turner for two episodes while McGavin was embroiled in contract disputes. [1] Burt Reynolds , in his television debut, played McGavin's partner and chief pilot Ben Frazer in 20 episodes, and was replaced by Noah Beery, Jr. , who played Bill Blake, for Season Two.
Dick Wessel , as chief stoker Carney Kohler, was cast in 41 episodes; Jack Lambert was cast in 23 episodes as first mate Joshua MacGregor (having played a different character, Tony Walchek, earlier in the series); John Mitchum co-starred in 10 episodes as Pickalong, the ship's cook; Michael McGreevey was cast in 17 episodes as cabin boy Chip Kessler; and William D. Gordon played first mate Joe Travis in 13 episodes before his character's death.

Armstrong , and Peter Whitney .

NBC hoped the series would defeat Maverick , a Western series which star James Garner would leave for a major theatrical film career a season later and be replaced by Roger Moore . Riverboat was described as " Wagon Train on water". Darren McGavin was known from playing Mike Hammer and Burt Reynolds was cast for romantic interest. [2]
"We've spent a lot of money and put a lot of time into making it a quality show," said McGavin. [3]
On October 30, 2007, Timeless Media Group released a three-disc best-of set featuring 15 episodes from the series. [4]
On May 15, 2012, Timeless Media Group released Riverboat- The Complete Series on DVD in Region 1. [5]
The New York Times called the pilot "labored and dull". [6]
The Los Angeles Times said it was "produced with the slick vacuity of a B movie with pleasantly inconsequential stories and an utter disregard for the color and background that the Riverboat called for." [7]
The premiere episode rated 11.9 against Maverick ' s 22.9 and a rerun of That's My Boy with 7.5. [8]
In January 1960, the series was shifted from Sunday nights to Monday.

Storm-battered residents in the western Alaska village of Napakiak are preparing for the third storm in a week
ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Storm-battered residents in the western Alaska village of Napakiak were preparing for the third storm in a week Tuesday, days after a minister had to use a front loader to free people from flooded homes.
Napakiak, a Yup’ik village of about 350 residents in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, was flooded Sunday after heavy rains swelled the Kuskokwim River.
Conditions beforehand were “pretty brutal,” with winds and a lot of rain, said Job Hale, the minister of Armory of God Baptist Church. Then the water suddenly started rising as river currents pushed into town.
It caught everyone by surprise because it wasn’t the normal spring or fall flooding, which residents prepare for, Hale said. People scrambled to move vehicles to higher ground, remove firewood from underneath their raised homes and secure water tanks.
“I have a front loader, which became very handy because there were several people that actually got stuck in their homes,” Hale said. Even though homes are elevated, the water level was 3 feet (about 1 meter) or more and coming up through floors.
Three times he maneuvered the front loader to people’s doors, and they climbed inside the bucket for a ride to dry ground.
It was also used to rescue one person who needed medical aid, Hale said, adding that several residents told him they couldn’t remember flooding this bad in years.
The water started to recede Sunday night, but some parts of town were still swamped two days later.
Erosion has long been a problem in many Alaska communities including Napakiak, where it isn't unusual to lose 100 feet (30 meters) of riverbank a year.
The erosion is caused in part by climate change, with warming temperatures melting permafrost, or permanently frozen soil, making riverbanks unstable.
It’s so pervasive in Napakiak that the village school had to be closed this year because it’s close to falling into the river. Plans are to demolish the building and have students attend classes in temporary buildings until a new school being built farther from the river is completed next summer, superintendent Andrew Anderson said.
In an ironic twist, Sunday’s flooding forced the cancellation of a farewell party for the old school.
The weekend storms caused coastal flooding in several other western Alaska communities, but there were no reports of health issues or major property damage, state emergency officials said.
Sunday’s was the second storm to affect the Bethel area, the hub community for southwest Alaska about 400 miles (640 kilometers) west of Anchorage. Napakiak is about 10 miles (16 kilometers) southwest of Bethel, but there are no roads between the two communities until winter, when the river becomes a highway after it freezes.
The third storm was expected later Tuesday as the remnants of typhoon Ampil were forecast to impact parts of Alaska’s west coast.
This storm doesn’t look as potent as the weekend event, but Christian Landry, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Anchorage, said the Bethel area will get another round of precipitation and gusty winds through the night as the system moves north toward Nome.

Mel and Jack's relationship in Netflix's original Virgin River is no less than a rollercoaster ride, which began soon after Melinda Monroe or Mel (played by Alexandra Breckenridge) moved to the small town named Virgin River after losing her husband and recovering from past traumatic experiences.
However, her arrival in the town was not so good. Being a nurse practitioner from Los Angeles, Mel was assigned to work with the town's local doctor, Doc Mullins, who didn't seem to be happy about working with Melinda Monroe. Mel then crosses paths with Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson) and as they get closer, their lives get complicated.
Virgin River currently has five seasons, and the sixth was greenlit in 2023. Fans have been waiting to watch more of the small-town romance, and when asked if Virgin River season 6 will arrive in 2025, showrunner Patrick Sean Smith assured that won't happen while speaking to Glamour .
This is exciting news because it was believed that the next installment would hit Netflix in 2025, but now it looks like we can enjoy the rural love saga in season 6 in late 2024.
Though Virgin River season six was greenlit last year, the series has faced major delays due to the writer's strike. The show revolves around the relationship of Mel and Jack, along with other supporting characters in the small town.
The series received a commendation for its comforting storyline and how Mel and Jack always chose each other at the end, despite facing significant challenges in their relationship.
In the same interview, Patrick Sean Smith also shared that the upcoming season does not have an exact release date yet and said:
"I don’t know. We don’t have an exact date yet, but I know that everybody is working towards trying to get us back in front of the cameras as quickly as possible. But as to when that is next year, I don’t know yet."
But if you think that the Netflix series will take another year to come out, then know that Smith is "going to do [his] darnedest to make sure that doesn't happen" . Despite facing delays, the drama series has ensured a smooth run of its five seasons, and we're expecting the upcoming season to arrive sometime in December 2024.
Though Virgin River season 5 ended with a happy moment between Mel and Jack, it also included major cliffhangers and shocking revelations. Fans and viewers saw Mel finally confronting her biological father and also helping Charmine in giving birth to her twin boys.
The finale of season 5 also featured Preacher in a tough situation as he faces legal troubles following the discovery of Wes's body. Additionally, Lizzie announced her pregnancy which might lead her to tie the knot with Denny.
The showrunner also spoke with Deadline and stated, "Their [Mel and Jack's] pursuit of parenthood will play prominently in Season 6." Smith also confirmed in another interview with TV Line , that viewers will now see Doc and Hope in good health conditions compared to their issues featured in the fifth season.
Hope will be seen gathering new opportunities in her life after she navigates through significant challenges due to the distressing brain injury she sustained from a car accident.
In the same 2023 interview with Deadline , showrunner Patrick Sean Smith said that the team is "probably looking at a 10-episode season moving forward" and does not plan to end the romance drama until all stories are covered and the characters' arcs are fully resolved.
The titles of the ten episodes have not been disclosed, but we know that season 6 will undeniably captivate fans with a fresh narrative while solving each cliffhanger left in season 5's finale.
Since the series will continue from where it left off and bring some new stories as well, the main cast members including Alexandra Breckenridge (Mel), Martin Henderson (Jack), Tim Matheson (Doc), Annette O'Toole (Hope), Sarah Dugdale (Lizzie), Kai Bradbury (Denny), Kandyse McClure (Kaia), and many others are expected to return.
Till then, you can watch Virgin River seasons 1-5 on Netflix.
