The Master in Yacht Design offers the ideal educational path to become a Yacht Designer, by giving the necessary skills to deal with every stage of the design process – from the initial research and development of the concept to the actual construction of the interiors and exteriors and the validation of production processes in the boatyard. 

In recent years, the nautical sector has expanded constantly, confirming its role as one of the drivers of Made in Italy design. Furthermore, and the new classic approach, based on naval architecture, is taking on an automotive oriented edge, which introduces new working standards and technical and style solutions borrowed from car design.

The vocation of the Piemonte area, which boasts a number of style centres and renowned companies in the land and sea transport sectors, as well as one of the world’s largest shipyards, combined with the short distance from the coast of Liguria, makes Turin the natural setting for a training course founded on the growing process of osmosis that links the yacht world and the automotive industry.

Methodology and structure.

The course is planned in levels, which begin with providing students with essential knowledge of the nautical sector, in terms of both cultural aspects and basic techniques. From there, students gradually acquire the skills connected with yacht design. 

Starting from a study of the history and current scenarios of the nautical sector, students will go on to study the market and obtain more detail knowledge of the different types of boats. They acquire significant knowledge of materials, technologies and production methods, including through hands-on experience in a shipyard. They are provided with technical drawing and design tools, as well.

A further strength of this Master course is the fact that is delivered on two campuses, Turin and Venice. This offers participants a dual scenario, in which both cities represent an important aspect of the themes the course is focused on: the tradition of the automotive industry on the one hand, and the maritime vocation on the other. 

The training course ends with a Thesis Project, developed on a brief given by a boatyard or a design studio.

The Academic Master deals with the design of boats at 360°: from the water lines to the interior furnishings, from the details to all the components necessary for the realization of the project, without neglecting the specific regulations and the analysis of the product.

The Master is sponsored by the National Council of Architects, Planners, Landscape Architects and Conservators.

Academic goals

The aim of the Yacht Design Master’s Degree is to start the students to operate successfully both in the design of new models and in refitting, as freelance professionals or within studios and production facilities. For this purpose, you will deal with topics which, proceeding by successive degrees towards the specialization, frame the complexity of the theme within clear reference systems to ease the rapid acquisition of familiarity with direct step-by-step applications.

Trainees become familiar with the various types of boats, know the recent evolution of pleasure boating: classifications, nomenclatures and standards; the characteristics of the boating market, the main production structures, the materials and construction techniques in use.

Approaching the project, you’ll be able to prepare the correct distribution of loads and the internal functional partition of the boat; know how to use the dedicated CAD tools effectively in the project; you’ll be able to make the choice of the most suitable method to construct the surfaces suitable for CAM transfer for the milling of the pieces; able to define the hydrostatic and hydrodynamic characteristics of the project and choose the most appropriate water lines; you can take care of the interior design, passing through the calculation of the boat’s trim, the applicable powers and the study of the most efficient rig (in the case of sailing boats); Project management principles and experiences, study of techniques and standards for industrial reproducibility, as well as rules and ways of protecting the project idea, as well as environmental and marine heritage complete the training.

Your monthly student fee covers your student membership in the two professional organizations that will be very important to your career as a yacht designer: RINA, the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, and SNAME, the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. These two organizations provide you with periodicals and access to an enormous library of valuable reference materials.

Because tuition and enrollment fees include all text materials, software tools, assignment review and evaluation, testing, grading and consultation with faculty, the cost of a Westlawn education represents a superior value.

Practical, Project Based Learning

Our courses are online, and have always been based on “Project Based Learning” which is widely recognized as the most effective way to learn: As a Westlawn student you will learn knowledge and skills, and immediately apply your skills on practical yacht designs.

Project Based Learning enables you to internalize and retain the knowledge and skills, as you use the tools and processes used in professional yacht design firms.

Select Westlawn students also have the opportunity to collaborate on Superyacht designs at Art Center College of Design, in Pasadena California.

By the time you graduate, your portfolio of professional quality design work will include nine designs of yachts engineered in aluminum, fiberglass, and wood, both sail and power.

This realistic and practical education means you will have the confident ability to design yachts for clients upon graduation.

The Yacht Design and Naval Architecture Course

A comprehensive four-module professional education, the Westlawn Yacht Design & Naval Architecture course enables you to master the principles of yacht design using industry standard tools, including Rhino3d and AutoCAD.

During this course, you will prepare plans, computations, specifications and all the details for nine different boat designs. You will design both powerboats and sailboats. You will follow the practices of successful yacht design firms.

Your nine different designs will be critiqued by the Westlawn faculty of professional yacht designers, and will provide you with a portfolio of your own designs to help you start your career.

Module 1: Principles of Yacht Design

Introduction to design process; Fundamentals of statics and dynamics and their influence on design.

Module 2: Aesthetics and Layouts

Elements of exterior and interior design of powerboats, monohull sailboats and multihulls, using Rhino and Autodesk tools such as AutoCAD.

Module 3: Construction Methods

A detailed study of manufacturing technologies, materials and processes for wood, fiberglass and aluminum production.

Module 4: Systems and Equipment

Design considerations and issues relating to engine installations, propulsion, electrical, navigation, plumbing, fuel and environmental systems.

When you satisfactorily complete all four modules, you will graduate and be awarded the Diploma in Yacht Design, Naval Architecture, and Marine Engineering.

Admission Requirements

The Yacht Design & Naval Architecture course is a comprehensive and rigorous course. You should be prepared and mature enough for a college education. There are no specific prerequisites, other than self motivation and discipline.

You need a Mac or PC with internet access and email to enroll and to do the coursework.

Work at your own pace

You may start the Westlawn course at any time.

The entire Yacht Design & Naval Architecture course requires about 3,200 hours of study and assignment preparation, or about 1 to 3 hours a day to complete the course in 4 years.

Westlawn is a work-at-your-own-pace school. Some complete in as little as two years, others may take a decade. It is common for our students to obtain gainful employment as designers of yachts, cars, airplanes, products, and interiors early in their education at Westlawn.

Tuition and Fees

$4600 per module for tuition, and $100 enrollment fee per month. Therefore, the total 4 module course will cost about $23,200 if completed in 4 years.

Everything is Included

Your tuition and enrollment fees includes all books and full versions of all software from Autodesk, including AutoCAD, Alias, Maya, Inventor. Deep discounts on Rhino and Orca3d are also available to our students.

Making waves for 90 years

Since 1930, Westlawn has set the standard for yacht design education. Over the years, our alumni continue to lead the marine industry in setting the tone for style throughout the industry, including sailing and power yachts and commercial vessels.

For example, alumnus Jack Hargrave gave us the now pervasive style of sport fishing boats with long fordecks and wide and low cockpits.

Alumni Andrej Justin, Tom Fexas, Bruce King, Gerry Douglas, Roger Martin, Dudley Dix, John Swarbrick, Doug Zurn, Rod Johnstone, and many others have designed large numbers of beautiful and influencial custom and production yachts including many America’s Cup racers.

Eos, the 320’ three masted schooner built by Lurssen, was designed by Westlawn graduate and Senior Partner of Langan Design, Antonio Ferrer.

Recent graduates include Adam Voorhees, Superyacht design award winner, and Adriana Monk, a Chief Designer for Wally Yachts of Monaco.

. . . I am currently a NAMS surveyor in Annapolis and have had my own successful business for over 16 years. I have been employed by two yacht yards and the US Navy. 6 of the best yacht design courses to kick-start your career

Although many of the world’s top superyacht designers had no formal training, taking a yacht design course can be a great way to kick-start your career and make vital industry connections. We round up five of the best.

Southampton Solent University’s Yacht Design and Production Course has an international reputation and for good reason, as it features guest lectures from BMT Nigel Gee and work experience placements at Sunseeker International . Students on this three-year course study the engineering science behind great yacht design as well as the fundamental principles of naval architecture. A foundation year is available, as well as opportunities to study abroad. Notable successes include the class of 2014, who built the foiling catamaran Solent Whisper (pictured above).

Yacht Design Diploma

Based in the American town of Arundel, Maine, the Landing School offers a wide range of courses in marine technology. Its Yacht Design Diploma boasts a 100% employment rate for former students and bursaries are available via the Women in the Marine Industry scholarship. Alumni have gone on to work for the America’s Cup team Artemis Racing (pictured above).

Yacht Design 1st Level Masters

Offered as a postgraduate course, the Yacht Design 1st Level Masters at Milan’s ISAD design school is intended for students who have a degree in architecture, engineering or design. Taught in both English and Italian, this one-year course culminates in an industry placement, and guest speakers include  Mario Pedol  (who designed the 180 metre  Azzam  — pictured), and  Andrea Vallicelli .

Yacht and Boat Design Diploma

The Westlawn Institute has been teaching yacht design for more than 80 years, and currently offers an online distance-learning programme. The Yacht and Boat Design course is taught by tutors based in the USA and Australia, and is accredited by the Royal Institute of Naval Architects in London. This one-year diploma features modules on construction, engineering and CAD. Famous alumni include Douglas Zurn , Tom Fexas and Geoffrey Van Aller , who is responsible for the design of many of the top 50 largest US-built yachts , such as the 73 metre Cocoa Bean (pictured above).

Automotive and Transport Design MDes/BA

A slightly left field option perhaps, but automotive design is one of the key fields that influences yacht design . This three to four-year undergraduate course at Coventry University is held in particularly high regard for its strong industry connections. Former students who have gone on to make a name for themselves in the superyacht world include Jonny Horsfield (whose H2 Yacht Design studio created the exteriors for the 123 metre Project Jupiter  — pictured above), and Steve Gresham.

Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering MEng

In recent years, there has been a trend towards students using naval architecture courses as a route into yacht design, as James Roy from BMT Nigel Gee explains: "It used to be that if you attended a traditional naval architecture degree then you would spend most of your time learning things about big merchant ships, but that is not the case anymore.

"Most university degrees are now geared to provide modular approaches, and the naval architecture and engineering of smaller and specialist vessels, such as yachts, are included."

This four-year course at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow is a case in point — providing a broad basis for understanding how a wide variety of vessels work, from luxury yachts to commercial ships. The faculty also owns a 10 metre sailing yacht called Catalina (pictured above), which students can hire for as little as £30 per day.

Yacht design, programme overview.

The Yacht Design degree program, offered in English, aims to prepare students to become professionals in the field capable of confronting industrial problems at a high degree of complexity and innovation.  Graduates need to be able to understand, analyze and verify pleasure crafts, design large yachts based on innovative technologies, and oversee and direct construction, testing, maintenance and repair of yachts and mega yachts.

Learning by doing

The classroom lectures in which the theoretical foundation of each course is presented to students are supported by:

-didactic laboratories on design and nautical experimentation;

-internships at shipyards, professional consultancy studios, and  maritime classification registers and surveying boards;

-conferences and workshops in the nautical field;

-university regattas;

-research theses on fundamental topics or on themes proposed by companies in the nautical field.

It means being able to deal in an effective manner with technical problems at a high level of complexity and innovation, and work in an optimal manner using the most modern design and production techniques.  In short, the principal characteristics of a professional of the Master’s program in Yacht Design will be a student who has the ability to understand, analyze and verify pleasure craft, even at a large dimension and complexity, design yachts of large dimension using innovative technologies, and oversee and direct the construction, testing, maintenance, operation and repair of leisure craft.

Program Overview

The Internet of Things (IoT) is playing a significant role in modern society including smart cities/homes, healthcare systems, social networks, etc. Current and future engineers will be faced with significant challenges in employment and implementation of IoT in extensive engineering applications. As such, there is a significant demand for students to further enhance their core skills and knowledge in analysis and design of IoT, especially in embedded systems, VLSI, and wireless communications. Students can greatly benefit from this accessible online option.   

The Major in IoT within the Interdisciplinary Engineering master’s program (IDE ) focuses on the area of analysis and design of internet-of-things such as a system of interrelated computer devices, mechanical and digital machines, sensors and so on that connect and exchange data over the internet or other communication networks. This area spans a variety of application domains. The courses in this major will establish fundamental theories and tools in computing, sensors, embedded systems, chip design, and wireless communications.

This degree requires 30 credit hours total with at least 18 hours of Purdue graduate engineering courses.  Course subjects suggested for the online master’s in IoT includes:

After you begin your studies at Purdue, an academic advisor will provide you with tools to map out a plan of study and help you define a concentration tailored to align with your specific goals. Your academic advisor will also help you identify a faculty advisor.

• Math Background: One semester each of Calculus I, Calculus II and either Linear Algebra or Differential Equations
• Engineering Background: Preferred undergraduate degree in Engineering, Science, Mathematics or Technology.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the semester load for this program.

It’s up to each student to determine how many classes they want to take per semester. Most students working full time typically take one or two classes each semester, or 3-5 credit hours.

How can I have transfer credit reviewed and applied towards my program?

Transfer credits will be officially reviewed for transferability after admission with academic and faculty advisors. Course descriptions and syllabi will be required. 12 transfer credits can be utilized for the Interdisciplinary Engineering (IDE) programs; the amount accepted will vary depending on a student’s concentration and plan of study. Approved credits will be applied within a student’s electronic Plan of Study as electives. Transfer credits can only be applied towards IDE majors and not graduate certificates. If a student transfers to a program outside of IDE within Purdue's College of Engineering, previously honored equivalencies and transfer credit approval is not guaranteed. Students should inquire further with their new program. 

 In order for courses to be evaluated for transfer, they must first meet all of the following requirements: 

 Graduate level from an accredited institution 

• Never used towards a previous degree program 
• Engineering or STEM-related courses
• A grade of a B- or better 
• Students typically need to be an active graduate student within the last 5 years for credit to be utilized.

 Once admitted, students will work with their advisor to discuss the academic history and possible transfer credit.  

Will my diploma state that I completed coursework online?

No. Neither your diploma nor transcript will indicate that any coursework was completed online.

Diplomas read Master of Science or Master of Science in Engineering depending on the degree conferred. Transcripts will include the major name: Internet of Things

What GPA do I need to earn the degree?

You must have a GPA of 3.0 in all plan-of-study coursework to successfully complete the degree. Graduate-level transfer courses are not included in your GPA calculation.

Which academic calendar does this program operate on?

Engineering and math/statistics courses run on the standard academic calendar with full-semester-length courses. Online business (MGMT) courses run on the alternative academic calendar, which means there are two modules offered each semester – e.g. fall 1 and fall 2. Students may be enrolled in overlapping calendar courses but are not able to start a new term before the current term concludes. For example: students enrolled in a full semester, standard spring course may not take a summer module 1 course as the alternate calendar summer term begins before the standard spring term ends.

What course do you recommend I start my degree with?

For your first term, we recommend a 500-level course. Be sure to review the course prerequisites and needed prior knowledge to ensure you are prepared for the course.

What kind of academic and professional development support does Purdue University offer for online students?

Students enrolled in the Interdisciplinary Master of Science in Engineering with a major in Internet of Things, which is supported by Purdue University Online, receive robust support from a dedicated team of student engagement professionals. All students have an assigned academic advisor, who is available for one-on-one support and helps students with academic-related questions or issues. Academic advisors also offer workshops on topics relevant to academic planning and preparation, including plan of study workshops and specialty info sessions for students enrolled in specific programs.  

Additionally, students have an assigned student success coach, whose role is to support students who may be struggling in the online learning environment. Students have access to their assigned success coach from the point they accept their offer of enrollment through graduation. Success coaches also work to build community among online students, including offering networking events, resources, and opportunities for professional development.  

Is there a minimum grade point average required to complete the Degree?

A graduate student is expected to maintain a graduation index representing a B average (3.0/4.0 GPA) or better. A student's 30 credits of graduate coursework must be cumulatively calculated at a 3.0 or higher in order to receive the Degree.

Bayesian yacht updates: Rescue teams 'could be listening for timed banging noise' from vessel as next 24hours are 'crucial'

Fifteen people have survived the Bayesian superyacht disaster, however, the Italian Coastguard said the six missing tourists, including British technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter, are feared to have died.

Rescue teams trying to access the submerged Bayesian yacht could be listening out for a timed banging noise, a senior university lecturer has said.

Bayesian was moored around half-a-mile off the coast of Porticello off the coast of Sicily when it sank at about 5am local time on Monday. The yacht was battered during intense storms off the coast of Palermo and it is thought this led to a waterspout, a rare weather phenomenon, which caused the vessel to capsize .

Fifteen people have survived the Bayesian superyacht disaster including hero mum Charlotte Golunsk who saved her baby daughter's life . However, the Italian Coastguard said the six missing tourists from the incident, including British technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter, are feared to have died with their bodies trapped.

Vincenzo Zagarola, spokesperson for the Italian Coastguard, said this was the working theory of officials on Sicily because it is believed the boat sank quickly and search and rescue efforts by sea and air have so far delivered no results.

He said: "We think they are still inside the boat, that is our very hard idea. Our search and rescue activity by sea and air has gone on for around 36 hours. Of course, we do not exclude that they are not inside the boat, but we know the boat sank quickly. We suppose that the six people missing may not have had time to get out of the boat."

But Italy's fire brigade Vigili del Fuoco said it was developing a plan to enter the wreckage of Bayesian, which is resting on the seabed off the coast at a depth of 50 metres. Divers are struggling to reach the cabins of the British luxury yacht with the rescue team saying there is a “ world of objects” blocking access to the rooms and that divers have only ten minutes to search before needing to resurface.

Dr Jean-Baptiste Souppez, who teaches mechanical, biomedical and design engineering at Aston University, said: "A sign the rescuers may be looking for is a banging noise at regular intervals. This is common practice on submarines, and was one of the signs the search mission for the Titan submarine was looking for after it went missing last year."

Dr Souppez added the next 24 hours of the rescue operation were "crucial" and the chance of air pockets forming inside the vessel was "simply impossible to predict".

Bertrand Sciboz, a maritime diving and wreckage expert at French company Ceres, told BBC News: "I think 50 metres is a limit to dive with a certain category of professional divers, so you will need to dive with some kind of helmet and pipe and [be] connected to the surface for oxygen, and also for speaking and hearing and telling what you see and do.

"It's always very difficult, and especially with a sailing vessel, because you've got rope everywhere, you've got a sail which is floating in the current, because we are in the Mediterranean Sea and not in the English Channel.

"But the main thing, you know, it's the fact that in those kind of conditions, it's very hard to go inside the wreck, and they will have to have to make a big choice at one moment, of salvaging the whole wreck or rescuing the bodies."

Dad-of-two Mr Lynch, who founded software giant Autonomy in 1996, was made an OBE for services to enterprise in 2006. In June, he was cleared of conducting a massive fraud relating to an 11 billion dollar (£8.64 billion) sale to US company Hewlett Packard.

The sailing trip was a celebration after Mr Lynch's acquittal, since fellow passengers included some of the people who had stood by Mr Lynch throughout the ordeal. Among those unaccounted for, according to the civil protection agency, were one of Lynch’s US lawyers, Christopher Morvillo of Clifford Chance, and Mr Morvillo’s wife.

The British ambassador to Italy has expressed his sympathy for the families involved in the Sicily boat incident, saying: “My heart goes out to them.” Speaking after visiting survivors at their hotel, Ed Llewellyn added: “I’ve spoken to some of the British survivors both yesterday and today — I want to express my deep sympathy from myself and colleagues at the British Embassy for what’s happened.

“We’re doing what we can to support them in this incredibly sad and difficult situation to help them with contacts from the Italian authorities at a practical level.”
