And just imagine…

Let’s partner together on creating your perfect yachting experience.

What makes us believe we can?

Once a Steeler, always a Steeler

Every one of the 100-plus new-build clients are still a Steeler owner today. It’s because they keep their yachts that it’s so hard to find a Steeler on the second-hand market. Many owners are cruising in their first, second or third Steeler and the resale value of a Steeler is best in class due to the superior build quality, timeless beauty and limited availability.

What do the professionals say?

Steeler Yachts is the most awarded Dutch shipyard over the last decade. Continuous industry-leading innovations and superior build quality have been recognised with seven European Powerboat of the Year awards, three times Winner and the Dutch Powerboat of the Year award.

Service enhances loyalty

All Steeler yachts are rigorously tested by our team of experts before delivery to the client. Our super-stringent protocol has resulted in smooth deliveries and played a significant role in our 100% customer loyalty rating.

Service and support are critical factors in our obsession with offering the best possible yachting experience. Providing Steeler owners with the peace of mind to know that help is just a phone call away helps us as a yard too. It transforms clients who are delighted at the time of delivery to dedicated Steeler brand ambassadors over the years ahead.

In fact, we didn’t even have to call in a copywriter for our recent brochures as they were filled with testimonies and stories by Steeler owners.

A personal matter

You know it, we know it… Time is the most valuable asset we have in life. That’s why we aim to make your free time on the water as comfortable as possible. It’s is also the reason behind taking the time to create your yacht together with you.

Building at Steeler means being in direct contact with the builders of your yacht as often as required to understand your needs and wishes. It’s a personal matter, something between you and us. It’s a personal interaction too, one that generates a bond between client and yard that results in a unique yacht with her own story to tell.

And it’s another asset that sets Steeler apart from mass production yachts which require a build number to separate them from the rest of the fleet!

Experience counts

Many of our clients have seen it all. Some have owned a superyacht and endured a limited sailing area and lack of privacy. Others have unsuccessfully tried to convince a mass producer to build them something special and custom.

Those experienced eyes light up when they discover Steeler Yachts as the place to create a pocket-size superyacht. One that meets the demanding quality they expect and rekindles the excitement of ownership again. A yacht that offers a haven of pleasure to share with family and friends while realising that luxury is found in details, not size.

Having become the builder of choice for these clients, everyone at our yard is dedicated to keeping it that way by offering the best of the best…  And then going one Steeler step further again.

One of a kind

Steeler Yachts builds handcrafted motoryachts of ultimate luxury.

Our yachts are renowned for their avant garde design, superior build quality and endless customisation possibilities. We build every Steeler completely by hand in the Netherlands to the exact requirements of our clients. One of a kind motoryachts, for one of a kind owners.

This obsessive drive to provide custom & careless yachting turned all our owners into ambassadors. They finally found the alternative for mass products with endless snaglists and impersonal service and they want the yachting community to know !

ALWAYS UP TO DATE

The choice is yours.

Steeler has successfully delivered more than 100 yachts over the past decade, each custom-created for clients with very different personalities and needs. Should long range cruising be your goal you’ll likely opt for an indestructible steel construction. If higher speeds are a priority, let’s build your performance yacht in aluminium. And we also offer a superior trawler line in steel and/or aluminium. All Steeler yachts today benefit from our patented S-design hull in terms of low fuel consumption, minimal spray and maximum interior volume. Read more about this highly innovative hull here .

Steel boats: the advantages and disadvantages of this hull material

steel yachts

Steel boats are the talk of the pontoons. Bernard Moitessier and other sailors of the time all chose this material for various reasons. There are also a good number of launches still built in steel. But why are they still relevant today? What are the advantages and disadvantages of this material?

Antoine Willm

Why choose a steel boat?

After reading a book by Bernard Moitessier and other ocean adventurers, many will choose a steel boat. The steel boat is historically the travel boat that can brave all conditions, including extreme latitudes. Choosing a steel boat in the 21st century can also be a guarantee of safety in the event of a collision with a UFO. But what are the real advantages and disadvantages of these hulls?

Une réparation dans le bordé

The advantages of steel boats

Uncompromising strength: a well-built steel boat can withstand all weather conditions and even collisions. It will often come out with a few dents, but should remain watertight.

Durability: well-treated steel is a material that lasts over time. Almost all large vessels (ferries, container ships, merchant ships, etc.) are made of steel , and many are over 50 years old. What's more, steel is easy to recycle.

Cheap and "easy" repairs: if there's damage , or even holes, steel boats can be repaired easily. All you have to do is cut and re-weld, and a good boilermaker will be able to do it for you. And if you're good with your soldering poster, you can also do it yourself.

Une pièce prête à souder

It's easy to do-it-yourself: need to add a platform to your ship? Consider welding it on. Just try to keep it elegant and sleek!

Cost: you can find bargains and inexpensive boats. However, this advantage can quickly turn into a disadvantage if the boat is in poor condition. A steel boat in poor condition can be very labor-intensive, and you'll need to be prepared to spend a few months or years in the yard before you're ready to sail .

Pouvoir accéder partout !

Disadvantages of steel boats

Strong, but heavy: steel is much heavier than other materials. For example, a 9-meter boat can weigh up to 7 tons, while the same boat made of fiber will weigh no more than 4 tons. This means heavy displacement and a different way of sailing. The rest of the boat will have to be sized accordingly: sails, rigging, ropes...

Corrosion: this is the biggest drawback. A steel boat is bound to rust, sooner or later. As the sea is an aggressive environment, boats need to be closely monitored. You need to be able to take apart every nook and cranny of the boat to make sure there's no rust. Generally speaking, the exterior of the boat is well protected by paint, and this is not where problems appear, or at least they remain clearly visible. Corrosion is more likely to appear inside, where access is difficult: under the sink, under the shower, at the bottom of the anchor locker... If you're going to buy a steel sailboat , make sure you can explore everything.

Insulation: properly insulating your steel vessel is essential, for both hot and cold . But insulation must be "removable", so that all parts can be accessed to check for rust.

Electrolysis: rarer than on aluminum boats, electrolysis also exists on steel boats. To avoid seeing your boat turn into a battery , you'll need to keep an eye on the condition of the anodes, and change them when the time comes. You'll also need to keep an eye on your electrical installation to ensure that there are no leaks inside the boat . And last but not least, you'll need to be careful not to make direct contact with any metal you put on your boat, such as an aluminum cleat or a bronze hull pass-through (in this case, prefer a plastic one).

Steel or not?

Ultimately, well-treated steel boats offer everything you'd expect from a blue water cruiser: durability and sturdiness. But all materials have their drawbacks, and you'll have to accept being heavier and less efficient, being meticulous about rust and electrolysis , and spending a few hours treating and painting corrosion starts. If you feel you can get past these drawbacks, then you might just have the chance to weld steel links with the sea.

Top 15 Trawlers for 2023

  • By Patrick Sciacca
  • October 13, 2023

For every shoe, there’s a foot, and for every boating enthusiast, there’s a yacht. For those individuals who like to cruise their yachts across blue water, spend months on board or voyage to remote beaches and quiet coves, a trawler yacht is the go-to vessel choice. But even within this yacht genre, there are many options. For example, there are some mighty midsize trawlers that are easily capable of transatlantic crossings for an adventurous couple, and then there are megayacht-size craft with next-level amenities that require extra crew. Some trawler-yacht builders offer significant customization and others work from a fixed options list. There are single-engine trawlers and twin-engine trawlers. One thing that is common is that these trawler yachts are designed from the ground up for yachtsmen with wanderlust in their hearts.

Top Trawlers

The following 15 trawlers are all vessels we’ve written about. They are listed in no particular order.

  • Nordhavn 96 : Built for an owner who desired to self-sufficiently while cruising the world, literally.
  • Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 : This trawler can travel nonstop for 1,000 nautical miles.
  • Kadey-Krogen 52 : This twin-engine-capable, all-oceans trawler is a solid fit for voyaging cruising couples.
  • Bering Yachts B76 : The B76 is the builder’s first fully custom trawler in this size range.
  • Ranger Tugs R-43 Command Bridge : This vessel is equally comfortable at a 7-knot stroll or an 18-knot jog.
  • Beneteau 48 Swift Trawler : Based on the builder’s Swift Trawler 47, this yacht has a resin-infused fiberglass hull.
  • Kadey-Krogen 50 Open : The 50 Open can cruise at 6 knots nonstop for 5,000 nautical miles.
  • Outer Reef 620 Trident : It has a three-stateroom layout and optional 600 hp Cummins diesels.
  • Grand Banks 60 Skylounge : This yacht is efficient across a variety of cruising speeds.
  • Krogen Express 52 : Headroom to spare, two staterooms, a chef-ready galley and long range define this trawler yacht.
  • Grand Banks 85 Skylounge : Grand Banks’ V-warp hull form makes for a level running attitude, seakindliness and long range.
  • Vicem Yachts 82 Classic : Construction is in cold-molded, strip-planked mahogany with epoxy.
  • Outer Reef 610 Motoryacht : Power on this Outer Reef is a pair of 500 hp John Deere 6090 diesels.
  • Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot : Did someone say this is a 20-knot Nordhavn?
  • Marlow 58E : A high level of customization and admirable performance are at the heart of the Marlow 58E.

Nordhavn 96

The Nordhavn 96 is the yacht builder’s second-largest yacht its 17-model fleet, which ranges from 41 to 120 feet length overall. (There is a new 112 on the drawing table.) The builder says the N96 is based on its earlier 86-footer with a 10-foot cockpit extension, which increases both main-deck, skylounge and below-deck volume. The N96 we reviewed was built by an owner who previously had an 86-foot Nordhavn, but with his plans for extended cruises to remote destinations, the 96 was the right size for his voyaging plans. In fact, since the owner took delivery of the boat, it has been on a continuous circumnavigation.

Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

Beneteau’s Grand Trawler 62 has 1,000-plus-mile range and 20-knot speed with twin 730 hp i6 MAN diesels . The Grand Trawler 62 is the builder’s flagship in its Trawler series, which also includes the Swift Trawler 35 , Swift Trawler 41 Sedan ,  Swift Trawler 41 Fly and Swift Trawler 48 . Small touches set the Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 apart. They include sea rails on all lockers to keep stowed food and gear in place, leather-wrapped interior handrails for security in a seaway, and leather drawer pulls like those found on larger yachts. Long-range cruising accommodations include a full-beam master stateroom aft, a forepeak VIP and twin-berth guest stateroom. A Quick X3 gyrostabilizer helps mitigate any potential rocking and rolling on rough days.

Kadey-Krogen 52

The Kadey-Krogen 52 is the trawler-yacht builder’s smallest offering in its raised-pilothouse series, complete with a Portuguese Bridge. Owners can choose from either a two- or three-stateroom layout, and between a single-diesel engine or twin-diesel engines, for owners seeking redundancy. The standard engine is a 231 hp John Deere diesel. With the single-engine setup, draft is 5’5” and with twins it’s a shallower 4’6”. At 6 knots, range is an ocean-crossing 4,850 nautical miles. At 7 knots, it’s 3,300 nm. At 9 knots, it 1,700 nm. The builder states, “The entire Krogen 52 is built from only three molded pieces for maximized structural integrity. There are no additional secondary bonds or caulk joints that can inevitably cause issues. All deck and superstructures are cored and vacuum-bagged to maximize strength while minimizing weight.” Additionally, six longitudinal stringers enhance overall strength.

Bering Yachts B76

Lemanja  is the first custom boat that Bering has built in this size range. The yacht is notable for its steel hull and aluminum superstructure, and for its 4,000-nautical-mile-plus range with its twin 404 hp Cummins QSL9 diesel engines. As rugged as the Bering 76 is built on the outside, it also offers homelike comforts in its skylounge inside, offering panoramic views out large windows surrounding the space. Sole-to-ceiling glass offers similar views in the open-plan salon. Accommodations are fox six guests in three staterooms with a master stateroom and two guest staterooms, plus crew accommodations. In addition to its traditional diesel engines, the B76 has a solar-rechargeable battery bank for hybrid propulsion.

Ranger Tugs R-43 Command Bridge

The Ranger Tugs R-43 Command Bridge is a long-distance cruiser with creature comforts. Our expert found the R-43 Command Bridge to be a solid candidate to cruise The Great Loop . We agree. Twin Volvo Penta IPS450 pod drives give the boat efficient low and high cruise speeds at 7 and 18 knots, respectively. For those that have work during their cruise, the R-43 Command bridge’s master stateroom is set up with an office with a desk. Long trips require extra stowage and a way to clean salty clothes, so on the R-43 Command Bridge there is a washer, dryer, auxiliary refrigerator/freezer and stowage under the dinette, which rises on electric rams. Voyagers who buy a R-43 Commander Bridge can opt for a Factory Delivery Experience, which is three days of instruction on Puget Sound, and includes in boat systems, handling and maintenance.

Beneteau Swift Trawler 48

The Beneteau Swift Trawler 48 has a 1,300-nautical-mile range at 8 knots, but can also speed away at 26 knots if the weather goes south in a hurry. Based on the builder’s 47-footer , the three-stateroom, two-head Swift Trawler 48 has a resin-infused fiberglass hull. Power is a pair of 425 hp Cummins diesels. The main-deck layout includes a galley aft setup, which is accessible to the cockpit. There, the seating and dining area can be fully enclosed, with tracks in place for side curtains. The helmsman is kept comfortable on long passages with a bolstered, pedestal bucket-style seat with a flip-up footrest. The Swift Trawler 48 we reviewed had upgraded 12-inch Raymarine HybridTouch displays (9-inch screens are standard).

Kadey-Krogen 50 Open

Designed for serious extended cruising,  Kadey-Krogen Yachts 50 Open provides owners with amenities that will enhance those longer passages. The galley is fitted with a Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer, a four-burner Wolf range, a microwave and an optional dishwasher. Unlike in many trawlers and their traditional pilothouse design, the galley is located on the same level as the helm and salon. Belowdecks is the master stateroom amidships with two hanging lockers, 12 cabinets, additional drawers for stowage and an en suite head, shower and two sinks. Forward of the master is an office. The 50 Open’s hull has soft chines and a curved after end, much like the characteristics of a sailboat built for cruising. The result is an efficient hull form that provides a gentle landing into troughs when the sea gets a temper. This trawler can cruise at 6 knots for 5,000 nautical miles; 7 knots for 3,000 nautical miles; 8 knots for 2,100 nautical miles; and 9 knots for 1,200 nautical miles.

Outer Reef 620 Trident

Outer Reef Yachts 620 Trident delivers a three-stateroom layout and optional 600 hp Cummins diesels that allow this vessel to approach a top hop of 21 knots. Cruising speed is a little over 16 knots, burning about 34 gallons of fuel per hour at 2,750 rpm. The amidships master stateroom has 6-foot-8-inch headroom, a walk-in closet and a shower enclosed in smoked glass. In the forepeak VIP stateroom, there are seven drawers, a hanging locker, a 31-inch Samsung TV and 7-foot headroom. The portside guest stateroom can convert to an office, too. The aft galley has a U-shape countertop, a three-burner electric cooktop, a Bosch microwave and a Vitrifrigo refrigerator and freezer. Cherry, walnut and oak are the available wood options.

Grand Banks 60 Skylounge

It’s obvious after a quick peek inside the Grand Banks 60 Skylounge that the  Grand Banks Yachts  trademark external DNA is retained. The deck, cabin house and skylounge are all composed of infused carbon fiber, reducing weight aloft and creating a lower center of gravity. With twin 900 hp Volvo Penta D13 diesels , the 60 Skylounge can accelerate to 31 knots and cruise at about 25 knots. The 60 Skylounge can also travel up to 2,000 nautical miles at 10 knots on a 1,530-gallon fuel tank. Twin 1,000 hp Volvo Penta IPS1200s are also available.

Krogen Express 52

The Krogen Express 52 runs on twin 440 hp Yanmar diesels and can cruise at 8 knots for 1,680 nautical miles or at 16 knots for 500 nautical miles. Top hop:  22 knots. In the interior,  Krogen Express  has outfitted the 52 with a master stateroom and a guest stateroom. The former has a queen island berth, more than 7-foot headroom, hanging lockers and smaller cubbies to port and to starboard, and an en suite head with a molded fiberglass shower stall with a seat, a VacuFlush toilet and a granite countertop. A power lift elevates the berth and grants access to more stowage underneath. The Krogen Express 52’s salon has a 26-inch HD LED TV and a home-theater system, leather Stressless chairs to port and a built-in, L-shape settee to starboard. The galley boasts granite countertops, a three-burner Force 10 propane range with an oven, a refrigerator, a GE microwave oven, a deep Elkay sink and a pullout sprayer faucet. There is a Buff Ultraleather Stidd helm seat for extra comfort during long runs.

Grand Banks 85 Skylounge

The Grand Banks 85 Skylounge comes in at more than 87 feet length overall and displaces 108,000 pounds, with a 22-plus-foot beam and an air draft of just under 26 feet. Owners can choose either a three- or four-stateroom layout. The standard motors are twin 1,000 hp Volvo Penta IPS diesels, twin 1,300 hp MAN straight-shaft diesels are optional. With the larger engines, owners can also choose an optional stern thruster, in addition to the standard bow thruster. With the IPS diesels, top speed is 26.5 knots and fuel burn is 100 gallons per hour, resulting in a range of 699 nautical miles. At a 21-knot cruise speed, fuel consumption drops to 57 gph, and range climbs to 972 nm. At a 9-knot jog, fuel burn falls to 9 gph, and the Grand Banks 85 Skylounge can cruise nonstop for about 2,500 nautical miles.

The Vicem 82 Classic is a flybridge model built in cold-molded mahogany, which creates a stout hull form with reduced weight. The yacht is notable for its timeless Downeast lines and strong joiner work. For cruising enthusiasts, the Classic 82 Flybridge is powered with twin 900 hp Volvo Penta D13 diesels . The yacht has a top-end speed of 17.8 knots, and the cruising speed is 15 knots. At 9 knots, and considering a 10-percent fuel reserve, range is reportedly 1,100 nautical miles.  Accommodations three en-suite-equipped staterooms. The master stateroom is full-beam and amidships with a king-size berth is on centerline. The starboard-side guest stateroom and a forepeak VIP each have queen-size berths.

Outer Reef 610 Motoryacht

Built for an enthusiastic cruising couple after a three-year boat search, the Outer Reef Yachts 610 Motoryacht (part of the builder’s Classic series ), was customized with a fore-and-aft berth in the owners’ stateroom (as in, not athwartships), and berths rather than bunks in the smaller of two guest staterooms. This Outer Reef 610 was designed to be used as a liveaboard vessel, so the salon is not set up for dining (there are tables in the pilothouse, on the aft deck and on the bridge). A pair of swivel chairs in the salon face the built-in couch and the pop-up TV to port. The 610 is built with hand-laid fiberglass, PVC coring above the waterline, resin infusion and a vinylester barrier coat against osmosis. Power is twin 500 hp John Deere 6090 diesels turning ZF transmissions . The 610 tops out at about 13.5 knots with full tanks and 21 people aboard. The engines burn 20 gph at 1,800 rpm for 11 knots at 45 percent engine load. Those numbers should allow it to cross oceans without shortening engine life.

Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot

Nordhavn has long been known for its stout circumnavigation -capable craft, and the Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot carries on the the tradition of a beefy build with addition of…speed. Twenty-knots-plus, actually. Twin 715 hp Cummins diesel inboards and a new semidisplacement hull form  are said to be key to the performance equation. The Nordhavn 59CP has a 777-nautical-mile range at a 9.3-knot cruise, and a 255-nm range at its 20.3-knot top-end. Construction is a solid fiberglass hull bottom supported by full-length longitudinal stringers and a series of transversal supports for added backbone. High freeboard should keep the decks dry in a seaway, while rails keep the crew secure during transits. Nordhavn says the 59CP has a “CE category A unlimited offshore rating, ensuring the vessel has the seakeeping and strength capabilities to take on most serious coastal cruises up to 1,000 miles.”

Marlow Yachts 58E

Following on the successful Marlow 57 , the Marlow 58E was started from scratch on a blank sheet of paper. The essence of the 58E is that it has better performance and more internal and external volume than her predecessor. The centerline length grew 10 inches over the 57, but the waterline length increased 16 inches and the beam widened 4 inches. If you were to examine the two boats out of the water, you would see more bell-shaped forward sections making for a soft impact with the vee’d portion. Power options start with twin 575 hp Caterpillar C9 diesels, but the 58E we got aboard had beefier twin 1,015 hp Caterpillar C18 diesels. Top speed: 27.9 knots. At 8 knots, the Marlow 58E can cruise nonstop for 1,400 nautical miles.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is a trawler yacht?

A true trawler typically has a full-displacement hull form and robust construction to handle open-water operation, and it’s designed to operate self-sufficiently for long periods of time. They are slow-cruising vessels, but over the years, hybrid yachts called fast trawlers have emerged to offer displacement-speed operation as well as the ability to run at planing speeds when desired.

What is a full-displacement hull form?

A displacement-hull form is known is for its rounded nature and deep draft. Full-displacement vessels do not plane on the water, but rather push through the water. This hull design makes displacement-hull vessels incredibly seakindly, but it also makes them relatively slow (think 5, 6, 7, 8 knots) when compared to semidisplacement- and planning-hull designs.

Is a long-range cruiser the same as a trawler?

While all trawlers are certainly long-range cruisers, not all long-range cruisers are trawlers. True trawlers will have full-displacement hull designs and not all long-range cruisers have them.

The Updated IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide, the First IWC with a Silicon Hairspring

For the first time, iwc schaffhausen relies on innovative silicon material in one of its manufacture movements..

steel yachts

This year, IWC brings the emblematic Portugieser collection under the spotlight, introducing several stunning new additions to the collection, including the impressive Eternal Calendar and updates to several iconic models, such as the chronograph and the 7-day Automatic . On the occasion of Watches and Wonders Shanghai, the brand unveils a new version of its Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide . Now available in steel with an obsidian black dial, this sportier model debuts an updated movement featuring a silicon hairspring for the first time at IWC.

Originally presented in 2020, the gold Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide introduced a complication that could not be more appropriate for the nautical-themed “Yacht Club” sub-collection. The original, specific functionality of the model relies on two sub-counters linked to moon phases and tide calculations.

steel yachts

The sub-dial at 6 o’clock displays the expected times for the next high and low tides. The interval between two high tides is consistently 12 hours and 24 minutes. After an initial calibration (via the crown) using tide tables for a specific location, the indicator remains highly accurate, with a deviation of only 10 minutes over 100 years.

IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Moon and Tide stainless steel IW344002 - first IWC silicon hairspring - review - 5

The double moon phase display at 12 o’clock, featuring IWC’s signature double moon for both hemispheres, has been enhanced to indicate spring and neap tides. This provides valuable information about the tide’s strength. Spring tides, which bring particularly high water levels, occur during the full moon and new moon phases.

steel yachts

This new iteration of the Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide introduces a more modern, sportier aesthetic to the model. Now crafted in steel, the case is still 44.6mm in diameter but is now water-resistant to 100m. The Obsidian Black dial is subtly enhanced with red and blue accents, adding a dynamic touch to the overall design.

steel yachts

One of the key upgrades is related to the movement powering these two complications. The new calibre 82836, an evolution of the 82835, marks IWC’s first use of a silicon hairspring. Operating at 4Hz, the balance is visible through the exhibition caseback. The automatic winding mechanism employs a Pellaton system, enhanced with virtually wear-free ceramic components, and builds up a power reserve of 60 hours in the mainspring.

steel yachts

Although the brand hasn’t provided further details, this first model to feature a  silicon hairspring is likely not the last. While opinions on modern silicon hairsprings vary, this material offers undeniable technical advantages. This synthetic material is thermally stable, non-magnetic, lightweight, durable, and ideal for crafting hairsprings that outperform those made from traditional metal alloys. Silicon hairsprings have been around for about 20 years, initially restricted to a few brands by a patent held by CSEM as part of a collaboration between the Swatch Group, Patek Philippe, and Rolex (plus Ulysse Nardin). With the patent now expired, and despite new patents being filed, it was expected that more brands would start using silicon hairsprings. For more details, check out our article here .

Good luck with an almost 45mm watch in this day and age. 41-42mm would be much nicer in my very personal opinion and much closer to the sweet spot of 40-42mm for a sports or sporty watch. 13.4mm height is very good for the complications this watch offers!

Size and price aside, this watch looks GOOD.

interview: alex chinneck brings a massive, looping steel boat to sheffield's historical canal

Alex chinneck on the looping boat, his most complex work.

British artist and sculptor Alex Chinneck is days away from unraveling The Looping Boat, his most complex installation to date. Seemingly floating on the Sheffield & Tinsley Canal, the artwork takes the form of a sculptural boat whose body, made of rolled steel , behaves in an extraordinary way, performing a six-meter-high and thirteen-meter-long, gravity-defying, aerial loop-de-loop. Chinneck is painting it in traditional canal boat colors and will engrave it with signwriting that celebrates Sheffield’s industrial heritage and historic waterways. ‘ It’s very much nestled into its situation, and it’s really unpretentious, ‘  the artist tells designboom . Positioned between locks 4 and 5, the waterway will serve as a gallery space for the sculpture, enabling the dramatic looping hull to be viewed from 180 degrees. The canal, which is looked after by the nation’s waterways charity Canal & River Trust, will also be used to transport sections of the artwork to the site by boat.

expanding interventions across sheffield

Alex Chinneck has been working on The Looping Boat since 2016. During that time, the artist installed two temporary public artworks in Tinsley – the first, a sculpture of a peeling road with a car hanging upside down beneath it, creating an illusion that more than 5,000 people visited over six days; the second, in 2019, a knotted post box temporarily displayed on a residential street outside Tinsley Meadows Primary Academy. The Looping Boat is co-funded by British Land and by energy company  E.ON , who committed to creating a public artwork as part of its redevelopment of Blackburn Meadows into the renewable energy plant that serves the city today.  In an exclusive interview, Alex Chinneck walks us through the mind-bending process of sculpting his latest loop-de-loop along a historical canal. Read the full conversation below.

interview with alex chinneck

designboom (DB): Can you walks us through The Looping Boat and how it ties to the canal’s historical layer?

Alex Chinneck (AC):  The project is in Sheffield, an area we’ve worked in for a long time. We took part in an open call about seven or eight years ago and won the commision. The Looping Boat has been underway ever since. When we responded to the open call, we didn’t really commit to a particular design; instead, we explored the idea of it. It’s how we approach all of our work, which is developing an improved understanding of the location. I’ve always championed the idea that the work belongs to its surroundings. We not only consider the aesthetic of the area but also the people that use it and occupy it, the opportunities that the location presents, and the history of the location. I like to think that when something resonates with the past of a place, it’s a good way of connecting with the present and, hopefully, the future.

We spent a lot of time in this particular area of Sheffield, understanding all of those different elements. Along the way, we originally designed a series of four huge sculptures to travel along the canal, which is 200 years old and has incredible industrial history. It used to be lined with many factories, and it was of hive of industrial activity, production, energy, and community, and that’s all changed now. It’s largely all gone along the canal. What’s left are the remnants of old cranes, old bridges, and old fallen factories. Even with this industrial heritage, it’s also a lovely place to spend time and walk.

AC: However, as different issues surfaced, we didn’t end up pursuing the original series of sculptures. Instead, we installed two artworks in Tinsley to engage and hopefully excite the residents, particularly the local school children who would never expect to find a public artwork on their doorstep. The first work is our peeling road, which gives the illusion of a car hanging upside down. We installed that overnight, so everyone woke up in the morning to the sight of it in Tinsley. We also brought every single class from the local school, one at a time, and it did a lovely job of blowing their mind. It had a hefty dose of theatricality. The second artwork is our knotted bronze post boxes outside of the school as well, which they equally loved. So we’ve been working in this part of Sheffield long.   Returning to The Looping Boat, we wanted to take advantage of the heritage and water element. The site’s history of steel and fabrication of factories pushed us to create something out of metal; something that was very complicated to build. And sited very close to the marina, home to other canal boats, the sculpture sits nicely within the landscape and the history; it encourages people to walk along the canal system and discover it. It’s not a plinth, a gallery, or a town square. You have to make a journey to go and see it. It’s very much nestled into its situation, and it’s really unpretentious. While I don’t consider it street art, it has that feel of something that pops up in a surprising way; you would never expect it to be there. I really love that. That’s my favorite kind of public art.

DB: Seeing as the loop-de-loop is a signature style of yours, could you elaborate a bit more on what it represents in this particular context? Considering the industrial heritage?

AC:  I love the illusion of material fluidity, and something about it on the water works so nicely. I find that to be a deeply satisfying sculptural action. And then, obviously, I really enjoy the surrealism of taking ordinary things and making them as extraordinary as possible. In terms of the loop itself, I wouldn’t say it represents anything. I always work in a very sculptural and contextual way. I don’t often operate in an overly conceptual way. That’s how it’s always been, and that approach works well in the public realm. It’s not that it’s intentionally diluted in terms of intellect. It’s just that it isn’t overly communicative of a particular idea or concept, and I think it leaves it more open to enjoyment, access, and interpretation. I’ve always loved loops because there’s this kind of continuation of a journey. I like that you keep going in the same direction, but there’s a complicated and awkward detour along the way, which feels quite true to life.

The Looping Boat will be six meters high and thirteen meters long

DB: The Looping Boat is your most complex project to date. Describe to us the construction process, its complexity, and how it’s influenced your artistic direction.

AC:  At the risk of repeating myself, the nice thing about working in the public realm and different locations is the environment and the surroundings; it’s the materials and how the context is always changing. These changes bring about a tweak of the aesthetic, a tweak of the theme, a tweak of the materials, a tweak of the subject matter — whether it’s a pylon, car, boat, etc.. I think all our work is different, but a common sculptural thread still travels through them, essentially a kind of fluidity and surrealism. What’s different here is the chosen shape. In terms of design, we spent a lot of time refining the size, shape, color palette, and detailing. But the engineering part is tricky; building a 13-meter long, six-meter high object that goes on the water means we need to make it highly stable. It can’t fall over. We always work with the same engineering team, but given these new challenges, we had to appoint additional experts — namely, engineers who specialize in the waterways.

It got more complicated when we moved on to the logistics. The artwork’s location on the canal makes it impossible to access by vehicle. This lack of vehicle access meant that we will have to transport it along the water and design it in a way that came apart into sections that would fit under the bridges and through about 20 lock gates. These parts are going to be towed along the water for about two miles before getting assembled on the water by crane. We had to design the entire structure, its size and shape, and the weight of the components around these restrictions. We also had to dredge the canal bed — which means clearing all of the old silt that’s built up at the bottom to make way for the steel pads —  and be extra careful about the size of the machines we were using, where they would go, so as not to interfere with the rail and tram lines nearby.

AC: But the big one was bombs. This area of the canal was bombed heavily in World War II and became a high-risk location for unexploded devices. It’s rare, but it happens — and it’s incredibly tricky when underwater. We had to commission an underwater radar survey that detected all metal objects lying on the canal bed and assessed their size and shape, the positive and negative poles, and the depth they were at. But identifying the bombs can be highly uncertain; it’s called a ferrous anomaly. So, we had to create clearance radiuses around the objects we couldn’t be sure about and design the entire project away from these zones. That’s why we have a bomb expert on site; we even had to appoint specialist waterway contractors.  That’s not all; we also had to deal with contaminated soil, power cables near the water, and potential mines. In my opinion, this is as complicated as public artwork can get.

Despite these challenges, what distinguishes our practice from others is that we genuinely still try to create artworks that haven’t been made before and genuinely try to defy logic. It’s not an easy path but a necessary one to reach an original and unique conclusion. I do think it’s an artist’s responsibility to make this kind of impact on contemporary art. A shoot of originalities is critical, and one mechanism for that is doing ridiculously complex projects.

DB: Building on your previous two installations at Tinsley, and given how The Looping Boat is going to be a permanent artwork, how do you see this project resonating with the local community? Do you see it eventually evolving into something else?

AC: I certainly hope it encourages more people to go along the waterway and enjoy the artwork and properly take in the site and landscape. The sculpture is part of the experience. And while The Looping Boat is quite large and complex, I think we worked out a good scale so as not to overpower the context. It’s not too punchy and not too loud. I think it’s fun, accessible, colorful, and cute in many ways. I really hope that people will see it as a warm, uplifting, and contextually responsive little landmark — that it grows into an endearing object. We will hire a bus for a day and take every class from the local schools to see it. I hope that it excites them in the way that the peeling road did. We’re also putting in place a yearly maintenance program so we can return and repaint the sculpture, as it’s designed to last a very long time.

Beyond that, I want us to find a way of telling the story of The Looping Boat. It’s not just about the finished product but also about how we got there and the challenges you meet along the way. That’s why we’re partnering with the Canal and River Trust, a charity that owns and manages the waterway, to include this story on their website. And then, eventually, I hope to write books about it and see documentaries made for it.

close up shot of the fabrication process

DB: The Looping Boat is quite a straighforward title for a project, unlike previous ones which known to be quirky and playful…

AC: I’ll give you a real exclusive. We’re still figuring out what to call it, behind-the-scenes (laugh). One of our better-known projects is the sliding house, and everyone calls it the sliding house. But the real title is: From the Knees of my Nose to the Belly of my Toes. We kind of anticipated this, and it’s absolutely fine. The same goes for this project; everyone will call it The Looping Boat because that’s what it will be. Even though we don’t really use those quirky names, I still enjoy the titling process. It’s a nice way to put a bow around the work as if we’re wrapping it up before moving on to the next thing.

DB: Looking ahead, what material(s) or technique(s) would you like to to start / keep experimenting with?

AC:  For about four years, we turned things upside down, we cracked them, and melted them; it was a great hive of sculptural experimentation. Then, during the pandemic, something changed; we wanted to focus on one sculptural area: the illusion of fluidity, as seen with our bending and unzipping buildings, our knots, our twists, our loop-de-loops. I think that came from trying to establish a strong visual identity and strong association with that sculptural form. And it’s been a great journey for us. But now we’re looking to dive deeper into kinetic works, like our Hermès windows, which I say is a nice vehicle to move some of those ideas further. It’s a lovely platform to test ideas on a small scale before applying them to an architectural situation. We’ve already started to fold buildings like origami.

Also, now that we understand processes more, we can work with more challenging elements like cast iron and bronze. We’ve gotten to a nice point where our material palette and our technical understanding of what’s possible is as broad as it’s ever been, and the appetite and the opportunity to create lots of different types of work — bending, cracking, moving — is as good as it’s ever been. In the next 12 months, our practice is going to start to move in lots of new directions, which is really exciting.

DB: Beyond Sheffield, where do you see your work landing in?

AC:  We were thinking that it would be great to have a project in Dubai. There’s some energy there in terms of public art. Our work enjoys quite a large international reach, which is great, but, so far, our interventions had been confined to places in the UK and Europe. We’ve never made a public artwork in America or the UAE. That’s definitely something worth uncovering.

What is a mountain?

A mountain is a large landform that rises above the surrounding land in a limited area, usually in the form of a peak. A mountain is generally considered to be steeper than a hill. Mountains are formed through tectonic forces or volcanism. These forces can locally raise the surface of the earth. Mountains erode slowly through the action of rivers, weather conditions, and glaciers. A few mountains are isolated summits, but most occur in huge mountain ranges.

What is a peak?

A peak is the pointed top of a mountain. The term is used in the fields of geography, geology, and earth science to describe a mountain or hill that is clearly identified by its height, shape, and location.

How do you find nearby mountains?

Using this website you can find out the mountains and peaks near your current location. How does this site determine your precise elevation? The site receives GPS data from your phone. This satellite technology is also used to determine your precise location and help you navigate in apps like Google Maps.

Your phone acts as a receiver for satellite data. The time it takes for each of the satellite signals to reach the receiver are measured in relation to each other and to the speed of light. Because each of the satellites is in a different place, the three signals can be used to estimate a three dimensional position and can determine your position on the Earth to an extremely high degree of accuracy.

Using this site you can determine elevation for any location in the world, whether you are there or not. Simply enter an address anywhere in the world and you will be given its elevation in either feet or meters.
