How to Make the Most of This Year’s Annapolis Sailboat Show
By: Zeke Quezada, ASA American Sailing , Boat Shows
A shiny new sailboat will make your heart race, your palms sweat, and trigger the butterflies in your stomach. Stand on the boat of your dreams, and you’ll feel a powerful and intense feeling of affection, attraction, and emotional connection. Amid the lively Annapolis Sailboat Show, I absorb the inspiration and ponder my own sailing journey. Around, dreams blossom—a vibrant tapestry of aspirations. Witnessing the joy of a boat purchase nearby, I sense the essence of possibility. Dreams meet reality on the dock in Annapolis as old goals are achieved, and new goals are set.
Up and down the rows of the show, you see bright flags and shiny vessels capturing your every glance. At last count, over 400 vendors attend the boat show, exposing you to the newest and coolest objects of desire. How great would it be to outfit your boat with all-new electronics? Imagine new sails to replace those tired but storied rags on your sloop. Can you ever have enough jackets or gloves or winch handles?
The Annapolis Sailboat Show is a spectacle for sailors and lovers of all things sailing. Everywhere you turn, conversations fill the air about vacations in the Med or anchors that can hold fast in all conditions or the dream to sail the world.
The Annapolis Sailboat Show allows us to dream while seeking inspiration and motivation and engaging in some infatuation.

The 2022 Annapolis Sailboat Show edition of “YouTube sailing channels by the numbers”
Prior to the 2022 Annapolis Sailboat Show I wanted to get out an update on Sailing YouTube channels by the number s. You can find lots of information about how we got the data on the original post. Sorry for any typos in the following article I did it on my phone.
First let’s talk about the motivation around the current data set. Since I’m NOT a Young Cruiser (I was told so by some of their membership!) and WAS NOT INIVTED to their awards ceremony, and even though I write extensively about channel creator content you know. I was NOT INVITED . Even though they are suggesting this is like all cruising and I AM NOT INVITED . Woe to me… I thought this might be a great idea to put out an update on a select number of statistics. A little strong ?
We are seeing the rise of the Sailing Influencer who is all over the social media environment and includes YouTube as but one of the venues. Between Instagram, TikTok and Facebook there are multiple video presentation methods. A few early birds have even started up their own servers and utilize a variety of Social Media Platforms to drive people to their hosted media service. This obviously bypasses censorship. I believe but can not prove through the data that YouTube and Vimeo are still the selected long form video delivery mechanism. The Sailing Influencer is going to be an impact to the marine industry and how social media is presented in general for the foreseeable future.
There are around 175 active YouTube Sailing Channels that have uploaded at least one video in the last six months, have a viewership over 25 subscribers, and are within the bounds of the definition previously stated for YouTube Sailing Channels in previous posts.
There are currently around 142 channels with zero or negative numbers of video uploads from April to September in the data set. In general, these are considered abandoned channels . The creators may have moved to other platforms. Why negative? They can go back and clean up prior videos or delete them. Some of these channels are large There is a variety of reasons, so we won’t go into that here. Also a few channels in six months have exploded primarily due to the use of the YouTube shorts . Overall, there are 425 YouTube channels identifying as sailing within the current data set. The next update will actually be an update to our API and search mechanism based on some feedback we got last time. The channel number changes every month as people delete their channel or change the focus. As an example, somebody who goes from sailing to trawler ( looking at you Tula’s Endless Summer and Sailing Doodles ) or sailing to van-life ( Hello Wynns ). The Wynn’s, Ruby Rose, Distant Shores, and a few others left us in quandary over building boats or sailing boats. We included Sampson Boat Company, and personally value refit/rebuild, DIY, so they have remained in the data set. There are 316 channels that have 25 or more subscribers. We only do math on channels over 25. Why 25? Because my wimpy little channel only has 26 subscribers and I wanted to be on the list.

When we check on views there has been some settling out that is likely caused by the deletion of content. Sailing Doodles, Sampson Boat Company (are they really sailing?), both have made respectable gains in viewership. Parlay Revival is next up, but Expedition Evans has had the largest dramatic increase in views. The average growth across all channels is about 7% over the last six months. The median is right at about 6% for growth. You can use that set to see if a channel is outperforming or underperforming within the space of YouTube Sailing Channels.

The top 15 channels are very similar to the previous channel listing. One notable is that Barefoot Sailing shows negative growth in views and has deleted some number of videos. This could be an artifact of how the YouTube API works but it is interesting to see. Another one is Expedition Evans. A 50% growth in subscribers and 77% growth in views is astronomical. We’ll talk about subscriber growth numbers and some general trends in a bit. Another outlier is Sailing Doodles with 61 video uploads. A significant number of them is the shorts uploaded. Also, we get to see other videos that may not be listed. So consider it both good and an artifact of what we can see with the API.

When we look at the videos counts of what seem to be abandoned channels we quickly realize some like Emerald Steel may have deleted significant numbers of videos even as they may be creating more content. Something is going on with how the YouTube API reports on their channel. To be honest we were quite flummoxed and ran the data twice when we saw the negative growth in views. There are some specific known abandoned channels like Sarean and Kittiwake two couples creating content that have since left. Prism who hasn’t been making videos but have a substantial social media presence. They’re also nice people having shared a taxi with them at Annapolis last year. LaLa Libra has a social media presence but has moved on to making families more than making content.
At Annapolis they are going to give an award for “up and coming” YouTube Channel . Going back one year to October 21 st , 2021, this is the list of all channels started within the data set. See caveats about the data elsewhere. There is always the possibility your favorite channel is not included due to naming, how they tag, or what is in their description . We’re using a consistent pull mechanism. In the future we’re thinking about allowing channels to add themselves to the data set and see the dashboards for comparison to other channels on growth and retention.

This data set is based on the original data set so we did not add any new channels since April (would break all kinds of comparisions). That does not mean we haven’t got good data. It’s pretty obvious that “Sailing Bye Felicia” is KNOCKING IT OUT OF THE PARK! Congrats to them. Since December of 2021 they’ve produced mid length videos, shorts, and other items growing from a subscriber base of 1220 to 2480 for 50% growth in subscribers and a whopping 90% increase in views.
Removing the erroneous single digit subscribers where in April they were sitting with 1 subscriber and in September they had grown to 20 subscribers would reflect a humongous percentage growth. We can tease out that Expedition Evans is growing like crazy. Alluring Arctic and Sailing One Life are also growing quite quickly.

Views is the “show me the money” moment for a YouTube sailing channel. Consistent production wins this category as you build up a viewership and rise in the algorithm. Sailing By Felicia and Expedition Evans are doing quite well in this category. As subscribers increase there is a direct correlation to views but not because all subscribers watch all views. It’s more of a correlation factor. Last time we did a lot of maths because we were looking for explanatory variables.

Best of luck to all the YouTube creators at the 2022 Annapolis Sailboat Show and the awards dinner my wife and I were not invited to attend . if you see me or my family walking around the boat show, feel free to say hi. Unless you want to kick me in the knee then I got the t-shirt out of dumpster and don’t know who those sailing Eoti people are.
Finally, about abandoned channels . I get asked a lot about how many people are creating content on YouTube and what does the abandonment rate of YouTube Sailing Channels look like. You can’t look at 6 months with no videos produced and think to yourself that they are gone forever. However, you can see a lot of channels are clearly no longer producing content and/or reducing the number of videos significantly. As a point my channel is on this list.
The analysis we are doing is going directly to how we’re going to produce content and what we’re going to produce so though we’re on this list this time. We won’t be on it next time. This list reflects around 139 channels with negative or zero videos. If you find yourself on the list and you think you shouldn’t be there as said earlier there are many reasons why it could happen.
Channels with negative or zero uploads last six months.

The Rise of Harbor 20s In Annapolis
- By Gary Jobson
- July 9, 2024
during a walk along the Annapolis shoreline a few years ago, I noticed a fleet of boats racing on the harbor. From a distance, it looked well-organized and plenty competitive. And as I watched them go around the usual channel buoys that they were using as race marks in an orderly fashion, I wondered who it was who had been responsible for getting this fleet started from scratch. We all know that it can be difficult to run a local racing fleet, never mind to start one, but we also know that behind every successful fleet, there’s usually a spark plug or two, the heroes of our local fleets, and as expected, the fleet that I observed that day on my shoreline stroll has theirs.
As one of the more successful and newer fleets to take hold in Annapolis, the Harbor 20s sailors make up the tightknit community of Fleet 5. Initially, there were a handful of Harbor 20s that raced PHRF back in 2005, but in 2011, local yacht broker Garth Hichens sold a group of sailors on the idea of creating a one-design class in Annapolis. The Harbor 20, built by WD Schock in California, is best-suited for either two or three crew, and the class has strong pockets in the US, especially venues with protected harbors for which the boat was designed. It’s meant to be a simplistic daysailer, so Hichens and the group agreed to make it a nonspinnaker class. Its self-tacking jib-boom makes things even easier on the crew.
Fleet 5’s early adopters comprised novice racers to skilled veterans, and fleet members made sure that the social aspect was a priority. The endeavor quickly encouraged more local sailors to acquire boats, and as a result, the fleet grew rapidly. But it also needed structure to ensure fairness and long-term viability, and two successive fleet captains have provided the leadership and resolve to maintain governance of the fleet, organize racing logistics, and work to improve the competitive level of the racing and to grow the fleet.
Enter Annapolitan Bell Carty, who comes from a racing family and was named fleet captain just as the COVID-19 pandemic was sweeping across the country. She says that it took quite a bit of work to get the fleet organized. “I inherited a fleet that was thriving, but there was little structure,” Carty says. “We had a lawsuit to deal with, and we needed insurance and a better way to communicate.”
Retired attorney John Heintz, who was one of the early Harbor 20 owners in Annapolis, stepped forward to help resolve the lawsuit with the builder in California, and he worked on an insurance policy for the class and the sailors themselves. “After the dispute was eventually resolved, we incorporated our local fleet and secured appropriate insurance for both the class and the fleet for the first time.”
Then came the communication challenges, which Carty says was a result of too many means of outreach to fleet members. “We created a website and pushed all our messaging through the site,” she says. “If something happens, it’s important to keep in touch to reduce any tensions that might arise. We make sure to communicate with everyone, not just the fast sailors, so no one is left out. We also make sure that everything we are running is fun.”
Heintz is keen on the fleet’s regularly scheduled Thursday coffee-and-breakfast gatherings at Annapolis YC, which follow each Wednesday-night race during the summer. The topics vary, and open discussions help resolve contentious issues, which, if left to fester, can create more headaches later on. “People can express their views in a thoughtful way,” Heintz says. “We are a group of friends trying to keep it that way. If necessary, we consult with people outside the class.”
Carty adds that it was important for the fleet to write a set of bylaws and determine an appropriate owner-driver fleet policy. They also designated that higher-level regattas would mandate that the boat owner be at the helm when racing. It’s also important for the fleet to vary the style of races, she says, so not all of them are windward-leeward. Sometimes they’ll simply have an informal race to someone’s house on the water.
While Heintz spent his early years practicing law, he cruised his C&C 39 for 14 years with his brother, and then his Saga 43 with his wife for 15 years, mostly transiting between the Chesapeake Bay and Maine. “I got into racing late in my career,” he says. “As the fleet grew around me, others came along to challenge me. I’ve learned from watching.”
The Harbor 20s sail very close to each other on short courses, he says, so it’s easy to measure one’s performance against others. “Everyone in the fleet will give you pointers or sail with you,” he says. “We recently had a seminar with two of Annapolis’ best sailors, Jonathan Bartlett and Will Keyworth, who shared images of our boats so that we could analyze sail trim and talk about tactics.”
There are currently 34 boats registered in the Annapolis Harbor 20 fleet, and Heintz says that there is a spike of interest in the boat of late. “Recently we had two top local sailors join, J/24 champion Tony Parker and Etchells standout Jose Fuentes-Afostini,” he says. There are only two limitations to growth: “finding available boats and then finding a place to put them.”
The fleet is working with the Annapolis YC to juggle more space in its dry sail storage lot to accommodate additional Harbor 20s on trailers. Carty says that the fleet runs races about 80 days per year, usually for one-day regattas, so as not to burn out fleet members. “We go out about three days per week,” Carty says. “One-day regattas are the most popular in our fleet. It is a real challenge to sell a two-day regatta, but they are good practice for multiday events like the East-West Challenge or the National Championship.”
The annual East-West Challenge is a highlight for the more-competitive Harbor 20 devotees in the US—a fleet-race championship that pits teams from the East Coast Harbor 20 enclaves of Annapolis; Hilton Head, North Carolina; and Charlotte Harbor, Florida; against those from the west, including Santa Barbara and Newport Beach’s Fleet 1.
One of the most difficult challenges for one-design-fleet spark plugs anywhere can be measurement compliance, especially when the vibe is meant to be low-key but also fair. Heintz says that Annapolis’ fleet has been smooth sailing since the beginning. “We haven’t had any issues with measurement or compliance,” he says. “People came from other one-design fleets that are more contentious. Now they want a boat that is simpler and fun to race. They are at that point in their lives.”
Hichens, he adds, has been instrumental in leading fleet-boat maintenance and issues with keels and rigs. “We hosted the nationals and followed the class regulations,” Heintz says. “All 25 boats were weighed and measured, and we set limits for adjustments.”
Several of the Annapolis-based Harbor 20s are owned by partners who alternate turns at the helm, which helps keep as many boats on the water as possible. The Wednesday-night summer-series starting line has become so crowded, however, that the fleet decided to parse into two divisions. Their solution for dealing with overcrowded starting lines and racecourses might serve as an example for other clubs looking to take the stress out of their more-casual racing series.
Fleet 5’s summer season, for example, is divided into three different series of five-week intervals. The roster of each of the fleets is drawn out of a hat for the first set of the series. The divisions then switch for the second series, with the odd-numbered finishing boats switching fleets. The third series is made up of the top-half finishers of the first two series racing together for the championship.
This protocol allows teams who regularly finish in the bottom half of the fleet to compete against boats of the same caliber and have a chance at finishing in the top tier. The experiment during summer 2023 was very successful and will continue during the Wednesday-night series this summer.
The combination of competitive but relaxed racing and popular fleet social events attracts many sailors who are not regulars on the grand-prix circuit. Crews include many couples or parents with children. Carty, for example, often races with her 84-year-old father, George Hughes. Her son, also named George, just finished his first year at the United States Naval Academy and races when he gets leave from his midshipman obligations. Keeping with the fun theme of the fleet, she says, “Carty is for party, with a C.”

ON DISPLAY: 2024 NIMBUS C11
The Nimbus C11 was designed to be all-purpose, rugged, fast, yet comfortable enough to be your normal day-to-day cruise. The C11 is a perfect vessel for the daily boater who uses the water as their method of transportation all year round, no matter the season. The pilothouse sets this model apart from most other boats in its class. There are swiveling cockpit chairs as well as a passenger sofa all enclosed in a brilliant cabin with large windows. It even has an indoor galley and a double bed in the front cabin with separate shower and head.
ON DISPLAY: 2023 NIMBUS T11 (OUR TRADE)
While the performance of the Nimbus T11 with twin Mercury 300 Verados will leave you in awe, don't forget about the social and entertainment aspect of this boat which are quite incredible for its size. The helm is raised for visibility and has comfortable seating for three. The bow seating area offers an exhilarating ride when running at WOT with nice bench seating and a sunpad. Aft of the helm are two rows of seats with a pedastal table and the seats farthest back actually double as a sunpad near the transom. A very well thought-out design!
ON ORDER: NORDIC TUGS 40
The Nordic Tug 40 is the latest interpretation of the solidly built cruising boat Nordic Tugs first offered in 1998 with a Lynn Senour-designed, semi-displacement hull as a 37-footer. Over the years, this mid-sized tug yacht has evolved to be better in all ways and take advantage of new materials and technology. During its evolution, the tug became the Nordic Tug 39 (the LOA increased by including the swim platform). Refinements continue to be made, and today the Nordic Tug 40 offers great accommodations and more efficient systems to make your cruising easier and more enjoyable. It does it all superbly.
ON DISPLAY: 2024 NIMBUS 305 COUPE
The Nimbus 305 Coupe may be the smallest model in the Nimbus Coupe line, but it certainly feels like a much larger boat. The aft deck shares the same level as the bathing platform and saloon. It has a generously sized comfortable L-shaped sofa for five persons with foldable seating. The dining table folds down into a cocktail table with glass holders with stainless steel handles. Perfect for relaxing or social activities with friends and family. The interior of the boat is of wonderful quality and atmosphere particularly in regard to space and light. The boat has integrated ventilation and five large opening port lights for extra light intake.
ON DISPLAY: 2022 OCEAN SPORT BOATS 30
The Ocean Sport 30 Roamer features a functional and versatile design, highlighted by a 20-degree bow rise for exceptional performance. Nearly identical to the Ocean Sport 33, the 30 Roamer does not feature the extended cockpit for the owner that needs the extra 3-feet of space on the aft deck. Built at the same shipyard and by the same team as Nordic Tugs, Ocean Sport is designed for adventure boating and fishing.
ON DISPLAY: 2023 NIMBUS T9
The Nimbus T9 is a 30-foot day boat that offers great opportunities for individual adaption and is intended for all types of day-to-day activities, such as transportation, water sports and leisure activities. Whether cruising around the Chesapeake Bay or perhaps as a tender for your larger yacht, driving the T9 is an exhilarating experience at more than 40 knots! Designed and built for exceptional handling.
ON DISPLAY: 2024 NIMBUS C9
“The Nimbus C9 is a contemporary commuter vessel designed to make daily life onboard as simple and comfortable as possible, irrespective of whether you are travelling alone or with passengers. We have prioritized freedom of movement over interior volume in order to make it as easy as possible to board, move freely around the vessel and disembark. As a starting point for the design process we sought inspiration and DNA from our Max II Coupé and Paragon Series,” explains Joacim Gustavsson, chief designer at Nimbus Boats Sweden AB. The C9 puts this functionality to the forefront by designing extra-wide gangways for moving about the boat, the greatest possible onboard load capacity, and large sliding doors so that more than one person can enter and exit the boat at one time.
ON DISPLAY: 2024 NIMBUS T8
The Nimbus T8 was specifically designed for day-to-day social activities, transportation, water sports, and relaxation. It is based on a newly developed air-lubricated stepped hull with excellent seafaring qualities and a low planning threshold. The T8 has a cruising speed of between 20-35 knots, with a maximum speed in excess of 40 knots.
