The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more. Classic hull speed formula: Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL Sail Area / Displacement RatioA measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more. SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3 - SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement RatioA measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize. Ballast / Displacement * 100 Displacement / Length RatioA measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more. D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³ - D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort RatioThis ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more. Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 ) - D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening FormulaThis formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more. CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64) An open cockpit version was also available without the cuddy/cabin. This listing is presented by SailboatListings.com . Boston Whaler Harpoon 5.2...help.I have the opportunity to buy a Harpoon 5.2 with trailer and outboard motor and I can't really find a way to feel out a healthy price range. The asking price is $3k and the boat is in good shape. I only know what I have read on the internet mainly on rauch dot net about the Harpoon 5.2. Any knowledge or pricing information or advice would be greatly appreciated it. I am somewhat nervous about making a bad purchase or getting in over my head. The boat has all its rigging etc. I don't really have any good options to getting on the water on a regular basis so I would like to get a vessel of my own. I would be trailering this 5.2 in Beverly and Marion, MA. Thank you to anyone who responds! First, I'd recommend you read the Boat Inspection Trip Tips thread I wrote. While a Harpoon 5.2 is a bit small for that thread, it will give you a basis for judging what condition the boat is in. Great Boat Boston Whalers are built by forcing active foam in between the hull and deck structure and then rocking the boat around to make sure there are no voids. The foam provides structural rigidity and floatation. If the boat ever takes a hit and the foam gets waterlogged, the boat is ruined. Try to weight the boat before you buy it. I bought a 5.2 on a trailer for $5,000 back in 1980, sailed it for five years and sold it for $5,000. In 1995 I saw one in the Jacksonville newspaper for $5,000. They're that good. $3,000 may be reasonable for a 5.2 in good shape. The Harpoon was a stable, fast,, bulletproof daysailer. Passed on the Harpoon 5.2 due to inspection guidelines reported here and to upgrade my criteria by leaps and bounds. Now onto a c & c 34. Top Contributors this Month

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.

I've owned a '77 Harpoon5.2 since 1990. Great daysailer one design racer built like a brick sh*thouse. Problem areas- the elvsrom bailers tend to leak and the plywood they are screwed into rots. Various fixes may last a couple of years. Some owner have reported issues with the board pulley system being stiff.

It was purchased several years ago, and restored by refinishing all teak and mahogany and with the professional help of White Bear Boat Works (118 year old sailboat builder) with fiberglass touch-up, replaced both bailers, new graphics, hiking straps, new sheets and lines where ...
