Zante Turtle Center

Protecting Sea Turtles on Zakynthos

Donate here, about the rescue center.

The ‘Mediterranean Marine Life Center’, also referred to as the ‘Zante Sea Turtle Rescue & Information Center’, or just ‘Zante Turtle Center’, is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) on the island of Zakynthos (Zante), in Greece. We are located at the southern tip of the island, 100 metres from Gerakas Beach. We are open every day during the turtle nesting season April-October 9:00 am – 8:00 pm. We do not have any sea turtles at our center because we still need funding to finish building our rescue center, help us achieve our dream and donate to support our goal! We do however have rescue tortoises and terrapins  at our center.

Founded in 1993, the mission of the Zante Turtle Center is to protect Caretta caretta (loggerhead sea turtles)  and other marine life in and around the island of Zakynthos. Gerakas is at the heart of the Caretta caretta nesting ground, and we are working to stave off the damaging tourist development in the area to ensure that this endangered species is not overlooked. Our aim is to show how conservation and sustainable tourism can work together to benefit visitors, locals, and wildlife alike.

The sea turtles of Zakynthos face many threats. Each year tourism numbers grow, and subsequently the rise of human beach activity, pollution, and lighting from island nightlife and beach erosion has contributed to a continual decline in the species population and annual hatchling survival rate. Follow the rules of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos (NMPZ)  to help save sea turtles!

To keep up to date with Zakynthos turtle information, and what is going on at our turtle center, please follow us on Instagram and Facebook !

Born on the Island, founder Yannis Vardakastanis has witnessed the severity of the situation first-hand and recognises the need for drastic protection in order to ensure that the sea turtles are able to survive and thrive in their natural habitat and nesting waters. Learn how to help reduce your impact and prevent yourself from becoming a threat to the sea turtles of Zakynthos!

For over 30 years, Yannis Vardakastanis has fought to protect the Caretta caretta (loggerhead Sea Turtle) population of Zakynthos and their precious nesting beaches from habitat disturbance.

The Zante Turtle Center collects and tracks sea turtle nesting data , cleans and monitors Gerakas beach during the nesting season, and works to develop protective policies in light of the area’s over-tourism. Our sand saver showers were built in 2023 and recycle the sand by filtering the sand to be returned to the beach, because 60% of Gerakas Beach has been lost as a result of tourism.  In 2011 we began to build the Sea Turtle Rescue & Information Center in Gerakas. The information center opened to the public in 2012, and has since encouraged visitors to take a closer look at the natural beauty, wildlife , and rich heritage of Zakynthos, and promoted the importance of sustainable tourism. We attract an estimated 70,000 tourists from across the globe every year! We are raising funds to become an active rescue center. If you are interested in supporting this cause donations are accepted here.

Become more involved by applying to our volunteer and internship  programs!

Protecting our Island’s Wildlife

Protect caretta caretta.

Through steady action, we will ensure a bright future for our beautiful planet.

The Sea Turtle Rescue & Information Center was built in 2012 and has since been operating as an Information Center for visitors. In the meantime we have been in the process of completing the rescue facility but it takes time, money and help to get there. Once we are up and running we are going to be able to rescue, rehabilitate and release sea turtles back to the wild.

“ Robert A TripAdvisor “ Was a twenty minute walk from our hotel. Really glad we visited. The team here are doing an amazing job protecting the native sea turtles. No turtle’s to see when we visited which was a good thing really, given that this place is a rescue centre. Really informative centre and a good learning experience.ce. ”
“ Francesca M TripAdvisor “ Very interesting. AMAZING work. It was very educational and informative. People need to go here and learn how to behave on the beaches to save the Turtles and not disturb their nests. We saw some babies here. The shop and cafe were good and all the money goes to saving the turtles. Making a donation here goes a long way. Please go and donate. ”
“ devonvisitor0 TripAdvisor “ Well worth a visit. Although no turtles were present during our visit, this is the most amazing place. Everyone is welcome, easy parking, no entrance fee, food available, interesting displays . Great information about the turtles nesting at the adjacent beach. Don't miss it! ”
“ Mitchyone TripAdvisor “ Amazing. This place really fascinated me, and you can share the beach with the turtle nests. 5 -10 min walk down the road. Obviously some part of it is sectioned off. If you go swimming I recommend taking a pair of those beach plastic shoes, it's a bit pebbly when you first go in. The staff do an amazing job at the rescue centre and have lots of knowledge. Don't forget your loose change to give. It all helps. They do a great job. ”

Sea turtles in Zakynthos: how to see them and where to find them.

tartaruga Caretta Caretta turtle Zante

The Loggerhead turtles Caretta-Caretta are the second attraction of Zakynthos Island , after obviously the famous Shipwreck Beach. Every day thousands of tourists flock to the beaches of the Marine Park and the excursions to be able to observe them in their natural habitat. It is possible to find them very easily in the bay of Laganas for two simple reasons: the first is because it is the place where they breed from April to August, the second is the shallow depth of the sea which allows them to be easily identified. Here are 4 ways to see them swimming in the clear waters of the Gulf of Laganas and some tips to be able to see the hatching of the eggs

4 ways to see the loggerhead Caretta-Caretta turtles in Zakynthos:

Snorkeling con le tartaruga Caretta Caretta a Zante

During a swim or while you are snorkeling it can happen that you come across a Caretta-Caretta turtle. The best area to meet it is that which goes from the island of Cameo to the small port of Agios Sostis . Swimming around the islet, especially in the early morning and late afternoon, it is quite likely that you will encounter a couple of specimens. If you do not want to let the turtle escape, approach it slowly, approaching it from the side, and do not touch it to avoid being bitten. Tip : pay close attention to the boats, a buoy can be very useful to be identified by the boats.

Kayak or pedalò

kayak e pedalò per vedere le tartarughe Caretta Caretta Di Zante

It is possible to rent kayaks or pedal boats on the beaches of Kalamaki, Laganas and Agios Sostis. To find the turtles you have to follow the excursion boats, as soon as you see them stationary in one point it means that they have identified the turtle and you just have to wait for them to leave. We advise you not to jump into the water nor to get too close to the boats, as they have to carry out numerous maneuvers to stay close to the turtle.

escursione per osservare le tartarughe caretta caretta Zante

The excursion is the best solution for turtle watching in Zakynthos . Before booking an excursion ask for information on the size of the boat, generally a boat of 20-40 passengers is an excellent compromise to get close to the turtle without disturbing it. Most tours are licensed by the Marine Park, check the reviews before booking. The price can vary from 7-10 € for the observation of the turtles only, we advise you to spend a few euros more and make some additional stops on the island of Marathonisi and the caves of Keri. More details on “ Excursion to the Marine Park “

Rent a boat

Noleggio barca

Boat rental is an unforgettable experience , as you can drive the vehicle independently to look for and observe the turtles, also making additional stops in the less touristy coves and bays of Zakynthos. If you are not very experienced in maneuvers, we recommend that you keep a distance of at least 10 m from the turtle to avoid injuring it with the propeller. The staff will explain the operation of the boat and the safety measures. If you are looking for more comfort, you can rent a boat with a skipper. More details on “ Boat Rental “.

Where to see turtle hatching in Zakynthos:

caretta caretta motorboats zakynthos

There is little chance that you will be able to see the eggs hatch during your holiday in Zakynthos . In fact, the hatching takes place from the end of July and mainly at night. However, if you are motivated enough and a little lucky, you will be able to live this experience too. To see the hatching you have to go every day for a couple of hours, to one of the beaches of the Marine Park, the ones where it is more likely to see it are Kalamaki, Dafni and Gerakas , placing your towel near as many nests as possible (the towel can be placed only on the water’s edge). As soon as you notice the WWF volunteers near groups of people standing, it’s time to grab your camera to immortalize the little turtles heading towards the sea.

We had great experience while our stay and Hilton Hotels!

T he History of the Caretta Caretta Loggerhead Turtles

caretta caretta motorboats zakynthos

Loggerhead Sea Turtles (Caretta caretta) have been on earth for 250 million years and are contemporaries of the earliest dinosaurs. The species, as with all sea turtles, is currently on the endangered species list. Every summer hundreds of Loggerhead turtles return to Zakynthos to mate and lay their eggs on the beaches in Laganas Bay.

The Caretta Caretta Loggerhead Turtles Life Cycle

Once turtles reach maturity, they return to their original nesting grounds and begin courting and mating. Males will court several females, but do not form any long-term pair bonds or parental roles in the turtles' lives. Females typically lay three to five nests throughout the summer season with eggs incubating for about two months before hatching. During this time, turtles travel further in search of food and mates. After hatching, the turtles face an arduous trek from the beach to the sea and are at risk of predators during this period. Once turtles reach adulthood, they exhibit similar basic nesting behaviors as before mating. This includes long-distance migrations and return trips back to their original nesting grounds. Therefore, turtles can often be tracked by long-term tracking studies which helps researchers protect them from predators and other threats to their survival. If you are interested in turtles, there is plenty of interesting information available about the Caretta Loggerhead turtles life cycle. You can also buy essay about turtles and understand how turtles' life cycles vary among different species. Understanding turtles and their life cycle is key to protecting them and ensuring their longevity in our environment. With a better understanding of turtles, we can work together to protect these amazing creatures from extinction. Every effort counts!

The Caretta Caretta loggerhead turtle’s mating period may last up to six weeks. It appears that the turtles court their mates. Nuzzling, biting, head movements and flipper movements are all examples of male courtship behaviour.Studies show that male Caretta Caretta loggerhead sea turtles approach the females and attempt to mount them, while females resist. The male and female Caretta Caretta sea turtles may circle each other, and if the male has competitors, the female may leave the males to struggle with each other. The winner then mounts the female and mating begins.

Over a mating season in Zante the female Caretta Caretta loggerhead turtles usually produce two or three nests. After this they produce no eggs for an average two to three years. Unlike other sea turtles, courtship and mating usually do not take place near the nesting beach, but rather along migration routes between feeding and breeding grounds. In the Mediterranean, Caretta Caretta loggerhead turtles mate from late March to early June. The nesting season peaks in June and July, but varies by nesting beach. All sea turtles have similar basic nesting behaviors. Females return to lay their eggs on or near the beach where they hatched. They haul out of the water, climb the beach, excavate a body pit, lay eggs, fill the egg chamber, fill the body pit, and finally return to sea.

Caretta Caretta Turtles Nesting in Zante

Hatchlings average about 1.8 inches in length and weigh around 20 grams when they are born. After hatching, the baby Caretta Caretta turtles enter the sea and swim away from land for several days. The “post-hatchlings” then return to find a home rather close to shore. They may stay there for months, feeding on floating material and occasionally swimming to keep from getting too cold.

caretta caretta motorboats zakynthos

Eventually, they enter ocean currents farther from shore and move into the oceanic zone where they remain until they reach the juvenile stage of their life, between the ages 7 and 12.

Only one in each 1,000 baby Caretta Caretta turtles is expected to survive once they make it to the open seas. With soft shells they are eaten by fish and other sea animals. They also get caught in fishing nets and are sometimes suffocated by plastic bags floating in the ocean. Those that do survive go on to move into the neritic zone and remain there until reaching adulthood. The neritic zone is also an important area for adult foraging and inter-nesting habitats. Sea turtles live in almost every ocean of the world. Their smooth shells and paddle-like flippers help them speed through the water as fast as 24 kph. These long-distance travellers have been known to swim up to 4828 km. Although Caretta Caretta sea turtles cannot withdraw their heads into their shells, the adult Caretta Caretta loggerhead turtles are protected from predators by their shells, their large size, and of course the thick scaly skin on their heads and necks.

The Caretta Caretta Turtles in Zante

Zakynthos is the most important nesting ground for the Caretta Caretta Loggerhead turtles in all of Europe, with 80% of the Meditteranean population of turtles returning each summer to lay their eggs on the beaches in Zakynthos – particularly in the Southern coastal region. Loggerheads only return to the beach where they hatched, often thirty years previousl, so the Zakynthian population is indigenous to this spot. Due to this, if they die out the island will not be repopulated by turtles from other areas in the Mediterranean. With more and more threats from tourism effecting the turtle marine and coastal habitat in Zante, it is crucial that we work to save their home and existence.

The Caretta Carette Turtles and Tourism

As well as being a sea turtle nursery, Zakynthos is ofcourse also a popular holiday destination. In the summer months, at the same time that the turtles return, the island of Zante beacomes a holiday location for thousands of tourists from all over the world.  With unchecked tourist development of the land, nesting areas are under immense pressure from illegal building, pollution, illegal beach furniture and traffic. Turtles are facing obstables from boats, fishermen, and beach furniture preventing them from nesting. From 11.5km of nesting beach in Laganas Bay, only 5.5km remain in a good state to attract nesting turtles.

caretta caretta motorboats zakynthos

The Caretta Caretta Turtle needs space and peace to lay her eggs

Tourism is a critical and worsening situation in Zakynthos in terms of nesting beach destruction, this coupled with the fact that only 1 or 2 out of every 1000 hatchlings naturally survive to reach adulthood and reproduce, means that the species is teetering precariously on the edge.  Yannis Vardakastanis, ESS’ founder, says that when he was a child growing up at Gerakas, he remembers the beaches black with hatchlings and females nesting during the daytime.  30 years on this is no longer seen, due to the degradation of nesting beaches, tourists on the beaches day and night, falling nest numbers and many hatchlings not even making it to the sea.  Moreover each summer many adults are seriously injured or die as a direct result of tourism. More about such turtles you can read at essay writers with creating an order.

caretta caretta motorboats zakynthos

Turtles are scared, and somtimes injured, by tourist boats crowding to get a glimpse of them

Although water sports have been banned in Laganas Bay, boating activity is unchecked.  Private yachts come and go as they please with little regard for speed limits and buoys delinating the restricted Marine Park maritime zones. Turtle spotting boats are rife. Many chase the turtles, some pull them out of the water to show tourists, and cause immense distress to these animals which are only trying to rest after their exhausting nesting process.  Then there are the glass bottom boats which operate in such a way as to force the turtles to dive underneath in order for paying customers to see them.

caretta caretta motorboats zakynthos

Turtles are an attraction in Zante, but are not always respected and can often be harassed by tourist boats

Although fishing is banned in Laganas Bay over the summer months, laws are not enforced and as a result turtles are still being caught in nets, ingest hooks and fishing line and become ill and die.  They also swallow plastic bags which float in the water like jellyfish.  These become twisted in the gut, the turtles are unable to eat, grow weak and starve to death.

caretta caretta motorboats zakynthos

Adult turtles are found dead on the beaches – there are more and more obstacles facing them now in the summer months

However, the most horrific injuries occur when speed boats collide with turtles.  Injures consist of deep cuts to the carapace (shell) and internal organs, from which turtles can die a slow and agonizing death. We have not included such graphic images to avoid any distress – however, unfortunately such injuries and deaths are becoming more and more frequent.

The Future of the Caretta Caretta Turtles in Zante

Normally, when an injured turtle is found in Zante, she is flown the Rescue Hospital in Glyfada, Athens, a flight of more than 1 hour.  Unfortunately, in recent years flights for the turtles are no longer available, so they have to be driven and on a noisy ferry on a 6 hour journey.  This wait can be the difference between life and death.  Immediate treatment is essential for the turtle to survive. Earth, Sea & Sky has teamed up with Sea Life Centre UK’s SOS Campaign to raise enough money to build a Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre in Zakynthos to treat the turtles here on the island. We want to ensure that injured turtles can receive immediate medical treatment from specialist marine vets, rehabilitation and ultimately release back into the ocean, all without having to be flown to Athens.  The centre is set to launch in June 2012 and we hope that many of the injured turtles found on the beaches and sea can be saved and rehavilitated here.

The Turtle Rescue Station is nearing completion and will need volunteers year round

Earth, Sea & Sky Global also continue to run a Volunteer Programme  in Gerakas, Zakynthos – offering people the chance to take a holiday in Greece while contributing to the future of the Caretta Caretta turtles at the same time. Our wonderful volunteers help to educate the public, clean the beaches, monitor the hatchlings and much much more. Please consider volunteering with us – every person helps us to make the Caretta Caretta’s future a little brighter.

Turtles Careta Careta

  • Zakynthos - Panorama 360°

On the island of Zakynthos is the only Greek marine national park. It is associated mainly with sea turtle Careta Careta nesting. Turtles swim everywhere, but especially a lot of them is located across the bay of Laganas, which extends from the end of cape Vassilikos to the end of Keri Cape. Across the bay there are designated zones: A, B, C. In zone B and C, you can not move with your boat faster than 6 knots, in zone B you are not allowed to anchor, and zone A is completely closed to any boat traffic.

Turtles swim in the shallow water of the bay - you can take a boat and watch them from it - the best time for observation is June and July. These are the main breeding periods. In most places on each pier there are offered expeditions in search of turtles - with a catchy motto: no turtles met, then we give you back your money. And in fact during the expedition with a small boat for 10-15 euros per person we have almost 100% chance to see turtles in the water. The beaches of Laganas and Kalamaki (but also beaches Dafni, Gerakas and others on  peninsula Vassilikos) are closed at night. At night, the turtles come to the beach to lay eggs. It is being observed by volunteers, who appear throughout the day at the beach in the characteristic blue T-shirts with the logo of the national park. Immediately after laying eggs and burying them on the beach, volunteers indicate the location of each nest to sunbathers, so they don't trample them. It is also prohibited to get closer to nests. Approaching to the nest changes the temperature of the sand, and the temperature of the sand affects the sex of the turtles inside the eggs. A specific problem can be met by turtles near hotels. Small turtles that hatch from eggs are encoded in the genes, that after hatching they are supposed to follow the brightest place (going towards the light). Have you ever been on the beach at night? It's worth it. The entire water surface reflects the light of a bright moon and stars. It is a one great shining tile. Turtles are meant to follow the sea. The problem are the hotels located close to the beach - light emited by these is much stronger than the glow of the sea and the young turtles may have a problem. Therefore often near the hotels can be seen screens of straw spread around the nests, especially those, whose period of small turtles hatching from eggs is coming. It is done to seperate the turtles from the bright lights of the hotels. If you would like to see turtles in the water - take a paddle boat from the town of Laganas or Kalamaki and try swimming about 400 meters far from the beach along. Additionaly if you find a bigger boat with tourists - you can for sure find a turtle there. Turtles swim underwater, but they must emerge to get some breathing air. They do it in intervals of 2-45 minutes. You have to be lucky to see them showing close to you.

Heather on her travels

Saving the Caretta Caretta turtles on Zakynthos – in Greece

On my holidays to the Greek island of Zakynthos, I’ve often visited the Turtle information centre at Gerakas beach. It’s run by Earth Sea and Sky organisation, dedicated to preserving wildlife in the Ionian Islands.

Turtles on Zakynthos

Yannis Vardakastanis who runs the centre, has won several conservation awards for his work to preserve the Caretta Caretta, or Loggerhead Turtles that nest on the beach near where he grew up. Here’s my interview with Yannis which will interest all of you committed to travelling in harmony with the natural environment.

Table of Contents

Interview with Yannis Vardakastanis

Yannis, your family’s from this part of Zakynthos, so what got first got you interested in the turtles?

The thing that got me interested in the turtles was the richness of wildlife you see around you. It’s so important for us to save them, and preserve them for the next generation.

The sea turtles have been here for thousands of years using the beaches of Zakynthos at Gerakas. I grew up here, and my family comes from this area of the island.

My first steps of life were down on Gerakas beach and I grew up playing with the turtles and swimming with them. In those days it was just me and my family. Sometimes I found myself in the middle of the summer in July and August on my own with the turtles.

Tourists started visiting the island in the early 1980s when the first charter flights came to the island. Since then, I saw a lot of people visiting the beach and slowly, slowly the numbers grew. I recognised that there would be a problem in the future.

So in the early 90s I made a decision to get away from the beach. I used to run the the beach bar, the sunbeds, umbrellas and pedalos. But, I started to feel that I was part of the problem and I didn’t want that, because this is my home, this is where I learned to walk my first steps.

Founding Earth Sea & Sky Wildlife Centre

So now you have the Earth Sea and Sky Wildlife Centre at Gerakas, tell us about the work you’re doing there?

I started Earth Sea and Sky around ten years ago, but my work here started long before. I aim to inform visitors coming here how to protect this areas, especially the turtles, the beach, the birds, the reptiles, and all the creatures of the area.

Also the very important issues such as climate change, the local resorts, the bush fires. I want to educate the visitors that come to this area, to be careful how they spend their holidays here.

I give them the right message to take back home and do the same thing back where they come from. So we try to promote tourism but in the right way.

Earth Sea and Sky Centre at Gerakas Beach

Threats to the turtle population

What would you say the main threats are to the turtle population here?

The loggerhead sea turtles live in the Mediterranean and they don’t move out of it. The only predators the sea turtles have in this part of the world are humans, and the threat from human activities.

The turtle’s survival is the human’s responsibility. We try to educate people to respect the turtles. If we don’t care about the turtles nesting sites or we use the speed boats here, then we are the biggest threat to the turtles. We should recognise that soon we may cause their extinction.

Caretta Caretta turtles on Zakynthos

Responsible turtle viewing

So if people want to come and see the turtles on Zakynthos, but they want to do it in a responsible way, what advice would you give them?

If you go on a boat trip to see the turtles, you should make sure the boat is friendly to the environment. It shouldn’t pollute the water and shouldn’t allow visitors on the boat to throw litter into the sea.

You should make sure the sewage system is working and that they don’t throw their sewage in the sea, because it can enter the turtles’ stomachs. They must respect the laws of the marine park.

Turtles on Zakynthos

The laws are very clear: go no closer than 10 m to the turtle, slow down and not drive fast around them, and don’t chase them. Any turtles in distress should be left alone – this is the best way to discover the turtles by boat.

Volunteer conservation projects

You also have volunteers who come and work with you, on these conservation projects. How can people get involved in that?

They can contact me via my website or Earth Sea & Sky and we can organise for them to come out here. They can work with us to preserve the marine life on Zakynthos and also the other wildlife – like birds and the reptiles and insects. In ecology everything is connected to each other so we have to protect them all to give a chance to these beautiful creatures.

Earth Sea and Sky Centre at Gerakas Beach

Do you have any more projects in the pipeline?

I already started some activity holidays. This is conservation work where you go out into the environment and see wildlife, at the same time you help protect them, and preserve them We clean the beaches and do any work that needs to be done to make sure these creatures have the right environment for survival.

Turtle nesting at Gerakas Beach

How do you enjoy working with the visitors who come to Zakynthos?

I really enjoy working with the visitors who come here, especially those who give us great help. Not just those that help with their hands but also in creating an economy to support this beautiful area.

They help to preserve the culture of the area, to keep the Greek families happy. This brings benefit on both sides, for humans and wildlife, especially the turtles.

Tips to conserve the turtles on Zakynthos

  • Make sure you take all your rubbish home from the beach, especially plastic bags which turtles can mistake for a tasty jellyfish snack.
  • If you visit a turtle nesting beach, keep well clear of the turtle nests that will be marked and roped off.
  • Don’t venture onto turtle nesting sites at night or shine any bright lights on these beaches. The hatchlings use the lights reflected off the sea to guide them and may be confused by other lights on the shore.
  • If you are lucky enough to spot a turtle while swimming, observe them from a distance to avoid them any distress as they can also deliver a nasty bite if you get too close.
  • If you take a boat tour around Laganas bay, don’t choose an operator that guarantees you a turtle sighting or your money back. This practice encourages boats to seek out and harass the declining numbers of turtles in the bay.

Friday 31st of August 2018

@Brian I think there are lots of issues as so many people are excited to see the turtles and yet it just leads to them being harassed. It would be worth you contacting any tour operators you see that are not respecting the rules of the nature park as it is a protected zone.

In school we have been learning about Zakinthos' turtle island. When coming across this website i was thrilled. I have learnt so much more about the turtle island and I'm chuffed. We have learnt about how Yannis helped the turtle island and it was great hearing another side of the story. It is fascinating how one man can start something that has gone global and helped so many turtles. one day i would love to go to the turtle island and witness this miracle again. Thank you Heather for having this website so more people can learn about Yannis' story and hopefully reach out to more people. :) When you were at Zakinthos did you manage to speak to Yannis and hear his thoughts for the future? :)

@Sioned Thanks for the comment, my sister lives on Zakynthos so we go each year to visit her and usually I will pop into the Earth Sea Sky centre to see what they are doing - they are a dedicated bunch but sadly the turtle numbers are declining. They have a volunteer programme if you are ever interested in going out there.

Saturday 3rd of October 2015

We have just got back from Zante on holiday ,we went on a tourist boat to see the loggerhead turtles , it deeply upset me how the boats were going round and round chasing this one turtle ,so busy ,the turtle was hounded it was disgusting ,maybe I was abit naive but I was shocked ,surely more can be done to protect them .

@Susan I'm sorry you had this experience. The rules of the marine park are that each boat can only stay for a certain time near the turtle and they should not harass or surround the turtle. Unfortunately the turtles are getting fewer and fewer in number and every boat tour wants to give their guest that experience of seeing the turtles so the few there are in in danger of being harassed as you found. I think the responsible thing is to never book with anyone who will guarantee you to see a turtle as this leads to more harassment and also perhaps it is better not to book a specific 'turtle spotting tour' but to do a pleasant boat trip that stops for a swim and if you see a turtle that's a bonus.

Nice article, Gerakas is a beautiful beach and well protected.

Did you not meet any of the ARCHELON volunteers who work on the beaches with the turtles?

@Laurance I love gerakas beach although it probably isn't ideal to have so many visitors to a beach with turtles nesting tehre. I didn't get a chance to talk to the Archelon volunteers but had a look around the Earth Sea Sky centre at Gerakas
