Review: Hatteras 80' Skylounge Motoryacht

Discussion in ' Hatteras Yacht ' started by YachtForums , Nov 30, 2004 .

Hatteras 80" Skylounge Life Is Good At The Top! by Capt. Chuck Gnaegy Impressive... that accolade comes quickly to mind as the defining word for the new Hatteras SkyLounge 80, an even richer refinement of its 80 Motoryacht introduced last year. This new, enclosed flybridge model, with its added 252 sq.ft. of accommodations, offers sweeping panoramic views from every point of its well-designed interior. Typical of the style and reputation Hatteras has built over its many years, the quality of workmanship as well as choice of fabrics and finishes sparkles as few others in this mid-megayacht market today. Every rounded corner, every sweep of exotic woodwork gleams as if dipped in multiple layers of polyester protection, producing a finish with unsurpassed visual depth to the fine teak, Java and African mahogany, and other exotics. Spacious salons and staterooms boast couches in buttersoft leather, blending fashion and comfort to the highest level. This innovation, as with many of Hatteras’ style leaders, was inspired by customers who have been loyal to the builder for many years. These owners know what pleases them, and, according to Jan Boone, vice president of sales, Hatteras listens carefully to their suggestions. Some of this year’s and other years’ innovative designs are direct results of those conversations.

Performance and safety is ingrained in the Hatteras brand name as well. This builder extends a five year warranty of its hull, while most offer only one year. Hulls are hand laid solid fiberglass, with no coring below the waterline, and also in areas above the waterline where thru-hulls are installed. Heavy stress areas in the bottom, such as strut locations, rudder posts, shaft logs and engine beds, receive overlaps for additional strength. Divinycell foam coring in the balance of the hull reduces weight, yet provides stiffness, strength, and impact resistance without the risk of water intrusion that some balsa coring may be subject to. Hatteras superstructures are also hand laminated as one-piece sections to impart structural strength and seamless construction, with a high strength-to-weight ratio. The result is strong, lightweight parts with a smooth finish, imparting thermal and acoustic advantages. The bright new star of this show, however, is the Sky Lounge, its enclosed flybridge topping off the seagoing and living arrangements, which include the expansive bridge, enlarged salon/dinette area, and country kitchen galley below, as well as commodious staterooms and related spheres for relaxation. This, truly, is a megayacht in an abbreviated format.

When the water playground beckons those on the rear party deck, ample space has been reserved for those ubiquitous PWCs and miscellaneous water toys, which must be safely stowed underway, but instantly accessible. When the blue water changes to light green and the shallow sand bottom heaves definitely in sight, it’s time to get splashing. Or, if an exotic island sends out its siren song, the RIB on the top deck can readily be launched via its davit to zoom the mariners ashore. The spacious aft deck is made for entertaining, with a full overhang, teak table and molded-in lounge. Overhead lighting and speakers complete the arrangement.

At the outset, the helm is imposing for its view, as well as its completeness, including a PC-based system that displays an LCD touch screen at the center, with a closed-circuit TV to one side, and a Northstar 952XW GPS/plotter at the other. Two fine leather helm seats gain command of the horizon and everything in between, while the Captain can easily converse with his guests directly behind. That social circle lounges comfortably on stools at the wet bar or L-curved sofas and settee, with the capability to applaud every decision made at the helm. The Sky Lounge, topping out three stories high to offer 360-degree visibility out of the weather, sports a full helm with twin helm seats, plus a pedestal table for snacks or game playing. To port is a desk with a large chart flat. Along with its pop-up 32” plasma TV, stereo, CD/DVD, its wet bar, ice bar, double electric grills, and refrigerator stand to satisfy every appetite at a moment’s notice. The helm features power assisted steering as well as computer controlled Ethernet monitoring and touch screen LCD display, plus audible signals for engine monitors. Abaft on the upper deck is built-in fiberglass lounge seating with storage and a solid surface table. A nicely fitted stairwell provides access from helm to galley, on the main deck.

Down the molded-in circular staircase to the main deck, inside the twin stainless steel sliding doors is the expansive, soothing salon, beautifully decorated with fully functional teak and mahogany, sturdy and fashionable cushions and leathers, exceptionally well chosen for their purpose. An expanse spreading to 377 sq.ft. of space, the entire salon aura conveys an esthetically pleasing art-gallery luster, with the full 18’ beam width devoted to matching sides – twin sofas, twin club chairs, twin end tables and coffee tables. Overhead is a designed headliner, defined to separate sections of the room, while the large windows on both sides are cloistered in custom-designed valances.

In all, the Sky Lounge 80 may be as dedicated to social entertaining as it is to seagoing, and handily meshes the two in a number of different venues. In the dining area, form has followed function as well, with an ovoid, fine wood inlaid table seating six, and mirrored headliner above. Hatteras offers a $10,000 china allowance for those owners who wish to express their dining taste in their own fashion. Trimmed in African mahogany -- satin or high gloss finish. The open salon provides a full array of seating to include twin sofas, twin club chairs, twin end tables and coffee tables, Lutron lighting and decorative valances. The sofas also offer storage beneath. A China cabinet with wet bar and ice maker are within easy reach of the dining area, which is suited for up to eight guests.

The galley, designed as a “country kitchen” on the Sky Lounge 80, is easily accessible from above or below, by the built-in circular stairs. Functionality is adhered to here as well, with granite countertops and backsplashes, plus special teak-patterned Amtico strip flooring that withstands the worst of spills. Appliances include a sub-zero upright refrigerator/freezer, microwave, full-size oven, and four-burner ceramic cooking top, all spiced with genuine mahogany inlays. A dishwasher and trash compactor round out the appliance list.

On the lower deck, the master stateroom is a crown jewel, a combination of full-beam roominess and excellent design for form and function. Natural light floods into the large windows by day, enhancing a water-level view that is no less than stunning. Its king-sized island berth dominates the space, but there is ample room for a custom headboard, twin nightstands, a double dresser and cedar-lined wardrobes. A plasma TV and entertainment center takes care of those late night programs-not-to-miss. The décor includes custom wall coverings, his and her heads with vanities and separate entryways, plus a shared shower. The full beam master offers six oversized portholes (one opening) as natural daylight sweeps through. Reached through an arched, sketch-faced door, with automatic lighting when the door is opened. The master bath is mirrored and seems even more spacious, with bowed African mahogany cabinets with granite flooring and countertops, as well as his/hers optional heads with an oversized shared shower.

Just forward, the VIP stateroom is almost as opulent, sporting a queen-sized island berth with coil-spring mattress and stowage below, nightstands, plus an entertainment capsule including a 20” TV/CD/DVD. Along the hull and bulkheads are multiple cabinets and drawers, cedar-lined lockers, while the private head offers stone flooring and countertops as well as a shower and soaking tub. A full length mirror allows personal inspection as well as enhancing light reflection. Additional stone-floored guest rooms at the forepeak offer several berth options – twins, crisscross, or tapered Pullman singles, as well as private showers and ample linen storage: including a full-length cedar-lined closet plus eight stowage cabinets.

Aft is engine room access, with a stand-up height and walk-around room designed to house the 1,550 hp Caterpillar C30s. Operational data such as rpm, gph, and boost pressure are noted and displayed. The accessories list includes visual and audible alarms for the mains, gensets, gears, smoke detectors, high bilge water, and A/C power. The engine room is state of the art with variable speed induction systems drawing combustion air, eliminating side-vents and allowing additional stowage. Wiring and plumbing are finished in polyurethane for easy maintenance. Cat C-30s are standard, with twin 27.5 kW generators.

Exterior features include an anchor with 4,000 lb. hydraulic windlass, freshwater wash down, stainless steel bow rails and cleats. So to wrap up our tour of this lovely yacht, we conclude that this Hatteras Sky Lounge 80 is not only esthetically pleasing, beautifully finished and furnished, but is also a proper seagoing yacht. With what she has to offer, this “megayacht in midi clothing” will surely leave lesser vessels in her wake.

Hatteras redesigns their 80′ motoryacht model

Emerging from the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show 2012 comes news of a redesign of the popular 80′ Hatteras Motoryacht model. The new 80′ Hatteras will retain the key elements that have made her one of the brand’s most successfully selling yachts only offering a new and improved layout including additional standards and options. The original 80′ Hatteras MY debuted in 2003 and since then 45 have been sold according to their director of marketing. Some of the exterior modifications include the relocation of the radar arch on the flybridge which gives the yacht a sporty profile. Centered between two horizontal port lights on each side are large port lights that offer a change in styling when compared to the vertical port lights on previous models. Furthermore the new exterior has a riding seat on the bow that comes standard which offers additional lounging area. Inside you will find a variety of changes to the layout from the saloon through the galley and in the staterooms. Now you will find side-by-side berths in lieu of bunks in the starboard stateroom. Also, like the larger 82′ Hatteras, the crew quarters now has a lounge space which makes for a comfortable retreat for your crew to have some space.

Hatteras 53

Convertible, motor yacht & extended deckhouse, by david pascoe.

Without doubt, the 53 Hatteras Motor Yacht is the most successful medium sized motor yacht ever built, with over 600 of them between their various incarnations. The main flavors are the standard motor yacht, cockpit motor yacht, the extended deckhouse (ED) version of the early 1980's, and the 53 Convertible which is the same hull. They were in production from 1971 to 1989, a full nineteen years.

My view of why this yacht was so popular is a combination of excellent quality, good design, and a fair price. It certainly didn't have anything to do with performance because it is a relatively poor performer. Coming in at a whopping 55,000 lbs. in its original version, you need 1600 HP or more to move this yacht at the kind of speeds people like to have today. Instead, you're only going to get 850 from a pair of 8V71's or 924 from the 6V92's found only in the 1983-84 models of the motor yacht. In all the years of its production, the weight never changed much.

53HatLines.gif

The hulls and superstructure are built like a tank with the bottoms about an inch thick with balsa cored sides and decks. The coring is rarely a problem unless someone has drilled the decks full of holes and improperly attached equipment. Quite often you'll find that the pedestal seats on the sport fish bridge have let water into the core, and this will be notable from water dripping out of the aft housetop overhand in the outboard corners. Or you'll see green mold, water stains or cracks here. Shown nearby is a photo of one that survived Andrew after taking out a dock and mangling a concrete sea wall with little damage to the boat.

And, of course, you'll probably find the famous Hatteras blisters on the bottom, but with laminates this thick, who really cares? Hatteras probably should have taken out a patent on the blistering process.

Speed wise, you could only describe these boats as just plain doggy, if you're a speed freak. If you want to cruise at 20 knots or better, these boats aren't for you. They're just too heavy to make them go any faster. People have managed to squeeze another two knots out of the 53 convertible by adding 3-4" chine extensions, and a lot of them have them.

All things considered, these are first rate production motor yachts, although you'll find the electrical systems in the North American Rockwell boats from the second half of the 1970's leave a bit to be desired. Other than that, these boats have no major problems. Nor should they after Hatteras had 19 years to work out the bugs. That's the advantage of long-term production.

The primary weak point is the 8V71TI engines which have a poor turbocharger/intercooler system. The two part AirResearch turbos are held together with acorn clamps that frequently crack and leak. And the intercoolers are notorious for getting clogged up with sludge and causing high engine temperatures. Plus the venerable 8V71 was never intended to put out this much power, so its being run on the edge  of her power range. The Allison M20 gearboxes were another weak point. They had trouble with getting adequate lube oil to the upper shaft bearings, which was a design defect. Many of these got a fixit kit installed after the boxes went bang.

Most of these boats through the early 80's had upsweep, water jacketed risers. Which means that if the riser leaks, as it eventually will, the water runs into the engine. Many of these systems were revised, others were not. Best to look for one that has insulated risers.

Leaking windows in these boats were not much of a problem except for the Convertible front windshields, many of which have been removed and filled in. The anodized frames don't last forever and a lot of them will have holes in them which can be repaired in most cases by just welding up the pitted holes. This happens because nobody ever bothers to clean out the salt and debris from  the bottom of the slide tracks.

All models have dual control stations, so you don't have to look around for this feature. Another good point for folks in bad weather climates is that visibility from the lower station is quite good.

With her 15'10" beam this is a big 53 footer and the layout takes maximum advantage of that space. Most people love the galley down layout with the dinette opposite which is great for informal meals.  And the galley is big enough, and well enough equipped with a full sized Moderm Maid range top, oven and dishwasher for the serious chef, while still having adequate counter space as well as plenty of storage space.  The owner's stateroom is adequate but the guest stateroom is cramped and many prefer to use the forward crew or guest stateroom instead, despite the upper and lower berths. Heads and shower size is more than adequate.

Seaworthiness? I hear a lot of captains complaining that this isn't a good sea boat. To which I respond, "compared to what?" A lot of these guys get off multimillion dollar custom yachts and complain how these boats handle. Apples and oranges. These are not designed as passage makers, nor do they have the fuel range. If you want the accommodations that a full bow gives, this is what you get. In my view, it handles okay, and does especially good in a short 3' chop where most folks in this size boat have trouble. The deep entry hull design is one of the reasons she doesn't go so fast. Being built like a tank means that it doesn't bob like a cork. She's a slow roller and she'll throw water like a busted fire hydrant.

The style of the earlier models is definitely pass, so the prices have come way down and a lot of people who can't afford a boat this size have purchased them. That means that they can't afford to maintain them either. Which means that you can find them at very good prices, but the older ones are essentially restoration projects. The ED models are still very popular and command good prices. Also, they changed the hull shape a bit so you'll get a little better speed out the 1980's models. If you want to know the specifics, call Hatteras.

Taken altogether, the popularity of this yacht is well deserved.

53 Convertible was discontinued in 1983 with the introduction of the more efficiently designed hulls of the 52 and 55 Convertibles. You'd think the convertible, being the same hull would weigh less than the motor yacht without a superstructure. But it doesn't; it weighs more at around 61,000 lbs. Part of the additional weight comes from the usual 12V71TI's and Twin Disc or Allision M20 gear boxes. Where the rest of it comes from I haven't the slightest idea.

Hatteras 53 Convertible survived hurricane Andrew with virtually no structural damage.

This is one of the ways we get to find out just how well built a boat really is. In the 160 MPH winds of hurricane Andrew, this 53 Convertible  took out several 12" dock pilings and the bottom battered against the concrete seawall  with virtually no structural damage resulting to the hull. Nor did the windows blow out or suffer from any major leaks.

Shown above is a photo of a late model 53 that survived hurricane Andrew after taking out some 12" pilings and battering the hell out of a concrete seawall without much damaging the boat. When it comes to talking hull strength, I often draw my conclusions on situations like this, not just tapping around a bit with a hammer.

The standard 650 HP engines are just barely adequate for this boat, and generally give good service. But a lot of folks have souped them up, sometimes correctly, often not, so you find engines going "bang" a little more frequently than they should. At least you don't have to tear the boat apart to get at them as there are plenty of hatches above so they can be lifted right up.

Undoubtedly the most popular large sport fish ever built, its still a neat boat in my view. With much of the weight further aft, her performance is quite a bit better than the motor yacht, and I love to watch one these thing plowing through the tide rip heading out Port Everglades with a halo of rainbows glittering in the sun. She does throw a bit of water. On the later models they added propeller pockets which lowered the shaft angle and supposedly gave a little better speed.

For a long time I thought they were terribly squatty until one day I realized that that is partly an illusion presented by the unusually low cockpit, magnified by a very high freeboard forward. My view is that these are all-around neat boats, just that they don't perform by today's standard. The strong suit of the layout is a huge cockpit, salon and bridge, with the forward accommodations being sacrificed for these spaces, as is appropriate for a real sport fisherman. Not quite as macho as a Bertram of the same genre, this is still a muscle boat with interiors that are hardly plush.

The main flavors were galley up and galley down, with more of the former in later years, and more of the later in early years. All had transom doors that never worked so good. Plus the optional tackle centers had too much wood in them. Later models come with a built in bow pulpit, and all have transom doors. Earlier models have a bridge layout that's not nearly as nice as the 1980's models. Nor are they known as leakers, despite the forward windshields which needed infrequent rebedding.  The window frames do support the bridge, and boats that have been abused will often have cracked window glass. Otherwise, its not much of a problem.

Aside from forward windshields, there are few faults to be found with these boats. The age old problem of broken forward cabin soles appears in many, particularly when there is a built in washer/dryer combo up forward, but this is no big deal. A little more serious, and frequently overlooked, is the fact that the engine room vents pull a lot of salt spray in that can really wreck equipment and engines. If you buy one, you need to install filters on the vents.

The hull/deck joint back aft is a bit weak and you'll often find a lot stress cracks in this area. At least it doesn't have those horrible aluminum rub rails like Bertram used. Rather have cracks than that unsightly stuff. Even in the early years the cockpits were full Fiberglas liners, and although the hatches were kind of crummy, at least it isn't wood like a Bertram. The bait wells aren't too swift either, being narrow and deep. With fuel tanks on center line, there isn't much storage under this large deck which is very low to the water, which definitely is nice. Nor does that fact have the tendency to sink these boats.

For some strange reason, Hatteras never did a very good engine room layout in these boats, and this never changed throughout all the years of production. The engine room is big enough, but also feels cramped with accessibility not as good as you'd expect in a boat this size. Perhaps that's why E.R. maintenance in these boats tends to be substandard compared to others. Things are hard to get to, and a bit disorganized to boot. At least the generator isn't under the cockpit deck. Its shoved back against the aft bulkhead where you can only reach one side of it.  And whereas the wiring in the 53 Motor Yacht is nice and neat, for some strange reason in the convertible it is messy.

During the early 1990's quite a few people poured a lot of money into some of these boats. That wasn't a particularly good investment. While a lot of them thought they'd get their money out, they didn't. That means that there were (or are) a lot of good deals to be had on 53's that are all dolled up, including some weird paint jobs like blue or yellow hulls.

If you want a big, serious sport fisherman, but find a new one way out of reach, the 53 Convertible is still worthy of consideration.

Specifications

Available with an open flybridge or enclosed Sky Lounge (u0022Preferenceu0022 being the open version), the Hatteras 80 is a luxurious Eurostyle motor yacht with four ensuite staterooms (plus a large captainu2019s cabin aft) and an impressive 21'3u0022 beam. The Hatteras is constructed on a low-deadrise hull with propeller tunnels to reduce shaft angles for improved thrust and less draft. The accommodations are as extravagant as they are spacious. Dominated by a vast main salon with hardwood flooring and indirect lighting, a formal dining area for eight is forward, opposite a huge country-style galley to port with extensive granite counters. Forward, there are two settees in the pilothouse together with port and starboard deck doors. A day head is on the starboard side just before the stairwell to the lower staterooms. Below, the enormous full-beam master suite has a king bed, walk-in wardrobe, and vertical hull-side windows. Crew quarters (aft) consist of two cabins, one with single berths and the other with a double berth. The spacious aft deck features a full overhang, teak table, and molded-in lounge. Twin 1,550hp Cat C-30 engines cruise the Hatteras 80 MY at 20 knots (low 20s top).

Most expenses are deducted from an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), a fund that is added on top of the charter price. The expenses, such as provisioning, fuel, marina fees, are deducted from the APA. The APA is based on the price of the yacht and ranges from 15% (crewed sailing yachts) to 30% (motor yachts with higher fuel consumption). You can actively control these expenses in your preference sheet (local vs. imported beverages) and by choice of itinerary (distances traveled). The remainder of the APA is returned after charter.">Price Terms: Plus Expenses
