Records made in Queensland’s Surf to City Yacht Race

The 2022 Surf to City Yacht Race, hosted by the Queensland Cruising Yacht Club (QCYC), was sailed from the Gold Coast to Shorncliffe on Saturday January 22 incorporating both inshore and offshore fleets.

There were 75 entries with some late withdrawals.

The delivery south on the Friday proved to be an endurance exercise for many of the offshore fleet as an extreme weather system caused very strong south easterly winds and a short, sharp chop in the northern areas of Moreton Bay. Fortunately, most of the inshore competitors were able to trailer their yachts to Southport thus avoiding the unpleasant delivery.

Southport Yacht Club’s newly completed Super Yacht Berth allowed any yacht who required a berth to moor safely overnight. Due to Covid restrictions, the Friday night briefing was broadcast via Zoom and Facebook. This worked very well with the exception of some minor microphone issues and all competitors were able to acquire the relevant information

The total reach on the Race Facebook page in the 28 day period pre and post race was over 7,500 people.

Inshore race:

Thirty monohulls and 17 multihulls lined up for the Saturday morning start.

The inshore fleet were led off by the multihulls at 9.10 am, followed by the faster monohulls ten minutes later then by the remaining monohulls at 9.30am. The start sequence is designed so that the combined fleets do not all meet up at the narrowest section of the course at Jacobs Well.

The starts were without incidents and all yachts enjoyed running conditions for the first leg. As predicted Parabellum, an extreme 40 catamaran, skippered by Joel Berg, soon left the fleet in their wake. Crank, Andrew Wickland, one of the favourites for monohull line honours, was an early casualty having dropped their mast and retired to Horizon Shores. Peow Peow, Gavin Arnold, reported taking a swim but fortunately recovered to finish the race.

4 Shaw, Stephen Broadbent, another monohull line honours favourite suffered equipment failure and was forced to retire. Local Doyle sailmaker, Charles Baker on board his yacht More Dough proved it was self-righting however did suffer damage to the bow prodder whilst doing so but managed to still get to the finish line.

Towards the back of the fleet, Madman, Neil Finlayson’s recently refurbished Ross 780 lay down off Peel Island and took some time to recover. Elles Belles, Chris Noble, dropped their spinnaker and stood by in case assistance was required as did Joanne Brodie, Daniel deBuriatte. Fortunately, Madman recovered and finished the race.

Race officials, Harley Cowlishaw and his wife Ann, had waited at Southport for the offshore fleet to start at 10am before driving to QCYC at Shorncliffe. When they were at Yatala, Brian Richards aboard his Peel Island check boat, phoned to report that Parabellum had just passed them and in Brian’s words: “You could water-ski behind them.”

The finish boat, Shoestring 11, manned by the owners John Hughan and his wife Therese were only able to set the finish line up after noon due to tidal restraints. Fortunately, the line was set in time to see Parabellum cross at 12.16.31 with an elapsed time of three hours six minutes 31 seconds smashing the previous race record and over an hour ahead of the second placed multihull Ritalin, Craig Humphries.

The monohull fleet was led home by Lambourdini 11, David Lambourne, in a time of five hours six minutes 38 seconds closely followed by Scratch, Patrick Hanlon, five hours seven minutes 42 seconds.

Overall inshore results:

Line honours multihull – Parabellum (Extreme 40) Joel Berg, (race record).

Line Honours monohull – Lambourdini 11 (Masrm 8) David Lambourne

Offshore race:

The fleet of 24 monohulls which included four two handed and four multihulls had to contend with a very sloppy Gold Coast Seaway to get to the 10am start. All yachts weathered the Seaway with the exception of Morning Star, Jack Kliner, which experienced some engine issues but fortunately managed to rectify the problem and started the race 30 minutes behind the fleet.

Kerazy, Shane McKay, having recently repaired a broken boom vang which occurred during the Sail Paradise regatta in early January had the same fitting fail once again and had to withdraw just before the start.

The fleet experienced 20 knot south easterly winds with gusts up to 30 knots for their ride North outside Stradbroke and Moreton Islands. Not a diamond, David Redfern took an early monohull lead from Kerumba, Tam Faragher and Yeah Baby Flow Sails, Andy Lamont. They were soon overtaken by the first multihull Rushour, Drew Carruthers, which went on to break the multihull record in a time of six hours 56 minutes 52 seconds which is close to breaking the overall offshore record currently held by Black Jack.

All yachts experienced an exhilarating ride North. The Two-Handed Division had some first time entrants. Italian Job, Tom Johnson and crewed by Steve North, recorded speeds of 19 knots whilst Jenesis, Michael Andrews reported that it was a great learning curve.

Not a Diamond held on to claim the offshore monohull line honours with an elapsed time of eight hours 51 minutes 40 seconds, 28 minutes ahead of Kerumba in second place.

Considering the testing conditions, all offshore yachts completed the course with reports of only minor gear breakages. Blunderbuss, Danielle Hutcheson, lost their stuffed Lama mascot whilst sailing in the north east channel only to have it found on the shores of Bribie Island a few days later (thanks to social media) and returned, washed and no worse for wear after quite a long swim.

Overall offshore results:

Line honours multihull – Rushour ( Drew 15), Drew Carruthers (race record)

PHRF multihull – Rushour, Drew Carruthers OMR multihull – Chill Pill (Schionning G Force), Wayne Bloomer

Line honours monohull – Not a Diamond (Hudson Hake HH 42), David Redfern

PHRF overall – Not a Diamond, David Redfern

IRC overall – Not a Diamond, David Redfern

Two-handed – Apriori (Farr 11.6 Mod), Trevor Hill

ORCi Flyaway – Paul-Stratacare (Beneteau First 47.7), Jim O’Hare

AMS – Sassy (Walker 11), Phil Lazzarini

Veteran – Sassy (Walker 11), Phil Lazzarini

Huntington Beach city clerk race heats up

Regina Blankenhorn, left, and Lisa Lane Barnes, right, are the two candidates for the office of Huntington Beach city clerk.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

For the first time in more than eight years, Huntington Beach voters will seat a new city clerk when the general election is held in November.

Current City Clerk Robin Estanislau is retiring, and two candidates — Regina Blankenhorn and Lisa Lane Barnes — are vying for a four-year term.

The first couple of weeks of the campaign have already proven contentious.

Barnes hired an attorney to challenge Blankenhorn’s ballot designation of “city executive coordinator.” Her team argued that this was misleading, since Blankenhorn held that position in the city of Tustin — not in Huntington Beach.

“The ballot designation is very important, and when you use the word ‘city’ … it implies that you work in that city,” Barnes said. “Your ballot designation cannot be misleading, and that is misleading.”

The issue did not require litigation. On Monday, Estanislau agreed to reject Blankenhorn’s initial ballot designation and change it to her second alternative “municipal executive coordinator.”

Blankenhorn said she respected the decision.

“Executive coordinator is my job title, and I work for a city,” she said. “I thought it made sense. They said it was misleading, that people would think I was appointed to something or that I worked in Huntington Beach. I was like, everyone Googled me already and found out I worked for Tustin.”

Lisa Lane Barnes is currently a member of Huntington Beach's Community and Library Services Commission.

For the record, Barnes’ ballot designation lists her as “businesswoman/Huntington Beach commissioner.”

Blankenhorn has been an executive coordinator for Tustin for 11 years, providing support to its city manager and city council in their dealings with the public and outside agencies, including media, while ensuring that policies and procedures are adhered to by the council.

A 25-year resident of Huntington Beach, she was previously an instructor in the Coastline Regional Occupational Program. She’s currently the chairperson for the Enterprise Corp. for the Coast Community College District, a for-profit corporation that operates the swap meets at Orange Coast and Golden West colleges.

Blankenhorn, who said she was listed as No Party Preference for years before recently registering as a Democrat, believes her experience in municipal government sets her apart.

“I want to make sure that a person who’s in there is experienced, because that person is going to be a department head and they’re going to have to lead that department and staff,” she said. “It’s not just a matter of conducting city council meetings. The city clerk is the elections official, and they’re also the records keeper.”

Among Blankenhorn’s endorsements are the city clerk of Laguna Beach, Ann Marie McKay.

Blankenhorn said that when she found out that Barnes was the only one running at the time, she decided to throw her hat in the ring.

“I didn’t know her name,” Blankenhorn said. “I just knew someone was running that was a Realtor in town and had absolutely no municipal government experience. I thought that was wrong. As a resident myself, I would not want to have an inexperienced person in that position. So that’s why I decided to run.”

Regina Blankenhorn was an ROP teacher before landing her current position working for the city of Tustin.

Barnes countered that she directly serves the City Council in her current role as a Community and Library Services Commissioner , a position to which she was appointed by Councilman Tony Strickland in 2022.

Her background is is business. She said she previously worked for a global chemical manufacturing company before settling in as a local real estate agent two years ago.

“It’s always been one of my goals to be deeply involved with my community,” said Barnes, who has lived in Huntington Beach for a dozen years. “When I was working corporately, I did a lot of travel, and that really prohibited spending as much time as I would like to within our community. When that changed and I became a Realtor, it was a great opportunity for me to really anchor myself in the city and just become involved.”

She sees becoming the city clerk as an extension of that. As to Blankenhorn’s contention that she is unqualified, she noted that she’s proud to be on a commission that advises the City Council on what to do with Huntington Beach’s 78 parks, five libraries and one golf course.

Barnes said she has conservative values. She has endorsements from the Republican Party of Orange County, Mayor Gracey Van Der Mark, Mayor Pro Tem Pat Burns, City Atty. Michael Gates and state Sen. Janet Nguyen, whose District 36 includes Huntington Beach.

“I’m embedded in the fabric of this community,” Barnes said. “I’ve never met [Blankenhorn], I’ve never seen her at a City Council meeting. I’ve never seen her at a city event in Huntington Beach, because she’s in Tustin.”

Huntington Beach City Clerk Robin Estanislau is retiring after eight years in her role.

As the conductor of municipal elections, the city clerk could see increased importance in Surf City in future years.

In March, Huntington Beach voters approved Measure A , which means the city could require voter identification, provide more in-person voting locations and monitor ballot drop-boxes starting in 2026. Weeks later, California Atty. General Rob Bonta and Secretary of State Shirley Weber filed a lawsuit in Orange County Superior Court , arguing that Measure A was illegal and preempted by state law.

Blankenhorn said she’d be ready to go on day one if elected.

“When I don’t know something, I’m going to have my staff to help me, guide me and direct me,” she said. “And I’ll have other city clerks that I can turn to. I know city clerks.”

Barnes also believes she is qualified, adding that the livelihood and well-being of the community were important to her.

“When I became involved, I loved it,” she said. “I absolutely loved it, and I wanted to do more for our community … I believe I am the best candidate.”

Calm Island With Some Greed

It would be nice to find some treasure., amazing race china 3: moscow, russia.

Even with Zika, filthy swimming pools and really fragile security, the Brazil Olympics has officially started, and I couldn’t care less, cause I don’t really watch the Olympics for leisure.

After a celebratory video from the teams, they are now headed to the host of 1980 Summer Olympics location, Moscow, Russia (but in technical terms, it would be U.S.S.R at that time).

So, have a vodka from the sword in the morning (which, would net me a penalty cause I will avoid drinking alcohol whenever I can, and what is the name of that tradition?), and head on!

Route Info: Will Work For Bread (Physical)

Carrying 20 heavy loads of flour to the shop, nasty even with the distance being so near. Having to put it neatly, is diabolical for people that are not physically inclined.

The sadist in me says that they should finish the entire bread that was given before they can even check in.

(Kinda pity that the show can’t use the Moscow railway as their only destination, it would be a great break from the lack of self driving for this season after Infiniti toss them for another Amazing Race knockoff).

Fast Forward: Circus Acts (Skills)

Actually both of the acts are kinda meh. The plate spinning is actually easier than the one in Amazing Race US Season 17, and the acrobatic stunt is kinda basic for a Fast Forward.

For me, I would add an Accordion playing and doing a balancing act to make it more tougher.

Still having a battle between Team Returnees & Team Siblings are kind of nice, cause the format of Fast Forward right now should be abolished.

Fast Forward winner: Team Siblings.

And for the rest of the leg, they full on copying the tasks from both Russian legs from Amazing Race US Season 21, but no caviar or learning who Anastasia is? Boo.

Synchronized Swimming (Physical + Skills)

Good news is that the task is definitely difficult and fun. Bad news is that it is more difficult that the other task and not many people are able to swim effectively to finish the challenge.

Trepak Dance (Skills)

4 episode in and we already have 3 fun and difficult dancing challenges (which will add up to 5 in the next leg, and one of them include flamenco dancing), guess Tokyo dances is seen as boring for the producers, and with Team Returnees using the Express Pass, next.

Roadblock: Russian Time Zone Exam (Mental)

Fans of Amazing Race know what this challenge is, and sadly to say, the examiner here is too bland.

First Place: Team Siblings

Penalized: Team Actors for taking some kind of illegal transportation (which is like, huh?) & Team SHN48 for violating traffic rules (which is understandable, cause they are idols, and in the idol world, they want them to be as pure as possible). Both teams took 30 minute penalties, which I have to say, is extremely harsh, do you think that these are the reasons why the teams right now are scared of taking the penalty?

Still, eliminated for passing through the red light would be a moment by itself.

Non-Eliminated: Team Dancers, again.

Strangely, I felt that leg is too short, but that just me.
