Hanse 315 : All-rounder is good enough even when used

Alexander Worms

Very manoeuvrable thanks to the self-tacking jib: This means that even narrow waters like the one we tested in Friesland are no longer scary

Used boat profile of the Hanse 315

Prospective buyers must pay attention to this, model history, market situation, the hanse 315 in detail, yacht review of the hanse 315.

Finding a good compromise is undoubtedly an art. Sporty sailing characteristics require low weight, but this is often at the expense of living quality. A lot of living space, on the other hand, is heavy and can therefore only be properly manoeuvred with large sail areas. This means sacrificing ease of handling. An overly durable design is expensive, which makes the boats unaffordable for many. The Hanse 315 strikes the famous happy medium between cosiness, fun-filled sailing and neat construction.

Everything there for four

Below deck, the dimensions are comfortable, although not huge. The headroom of 1.80 metres in the foredeck and WC and 1.85 metres in the saloon is fine. The berths are actually quite large, certainly in the foredeck. The bed there even measures 2.30 metres in length. That's almost too much, as the aft berth is a few centimetres shorter than a comfortable length. Nevertheless, the bed fits the headroom. If you are not taller than 1.80 metres, a berth that is 1.90 metres long is sufficient.

The feeling of space is great. Although the dark wood creates a very nave-like atmosphere, this is brightened up by the white main bulkhead and the large windows with sufficient light. This is pleasing, cosy and reasonably timeless. The shipyard called it "New England style" at the time. Some models even still have wickerwork in the hatch doors. Although this ensures good ventilation, it is somewhat sensitive. The test boat has solid hatches.

  • Type: Hanse 315
  • Design engineer: Judel/Vrolijk & Co
  • Built: 2005-2007
  • Quantity: 330
  • New price ready to sail: 70.000 €
  • Price today: 50.000 €

There is a small locker and the large berth described above in the foredeck. It is a full 1.60 metres wide at shoulder height. Enough space for two. Aft is a little tight, as the inner berth is only 30 centimetres high in the foot area. However, this only applies to the version with steering column and wheel. If a tiller is installed, there is more space. The width of the berth is fine at 1.50 metres.

The wet room is just as successful. It offers plenty of space, even for showering. In the saloon, four people sit comfortably around the large table. It can be folded to the side so that it is easy to get through to the foredeck. The Hanse's designers even found room for a real navigation station. However, this comes at the expense of the length of the saloon benches. 1.80 metres is enough for two people to sit on, but for many it is not enough to sleep on. Moreover, the width of 50 centimetres does not invite you to do so. However, you don't want to spend long periods of time with more than four people on board anyway. There is not enough space in the cockpit alone. No problem for a 31-footer.

Also interesting:

  • Dehler 35 Cruising used boat test: pioneering sports hotel

The galley is complete. Cupboards, cooker with oven, sink and fridge compartment - everything is there. The wooden surfaces have a dignified look and, together with the matt fittings, are almost elegant. You would like to spend some time here, not least because everything fits in terms of size. The passages are wide enough throughout, and the seats and backrests provide ergonomically comfortable seating.

There are a few details that are particularly pleasing: first and foremost the wet room. The passageway into the cockpit locker is practical to allow access to stowage items further down in the deep storage area. And a small, but still available clothes rail for wet oilskins answers the question: where to put them?

In the forward cabin, part of the berth area can be folded up. This creates a very comfortable cabin for single occupancy with seating and - almost more importantly - the option of getting dressed standing up in the cabin. The starboard berth is then still 75 centimetres wide. So much for the equipment below deck.

On the wind goes well

The wind is blowing at 10 to 14 knots during the test off Lemmer, ideal for the Hanseatic League. With a full sail, the yacht heads upwind through the narrow Friesland fairways. The yacht from Greifswald is very responsive at the helm. The wind edge is easy to find, and angles of well under 90 degrees are possible when tacking. A good 5 knots of speed is almost pleasing. The Hanse runs really well, also because of the folding prop on the saildrive.

The sail plan with self-tacking jib is typical of these boats. A real pleasure on a cruise, with virtually no work involved in tacking. Hanse advertised this very actively in the catalogue at the time: "A cruise with a Hanse becomes a luxurious cruise at sea." So far, so good. And then the copywriters orated at the time: "You promised your wife that a long time ago."

One thing is certainly true: Hanse has put an end to the days of huge headsails that could only be cranked tightly on small large-series winches with thick upper arms. This advantage comes at the price of two compromises: Firstly, the mainsail is correspondingly large and you have to know how to keep its power in check, and secondly, the self-tacking jib hardly works on courses deeper than 60 degrees to the wind.

While the main can be easily tamed with a little practice thanks to the strong backstay staysail, optional traveller, outhaul and downhaul, you have to invest in the headsail situation. You can either order the optional 140 per cent genoa package - which, however, brings with it the cranking problem downwind - or you can use a code zero or gennaker.

Gusts are acknowledged with pressure, the ship moves off

In any case, two additional winches in the cockpit are helpful. The platforms for this are already provided. If the gennaker is to be actively trimmed and the boat is being sailed with a tiller, then the person should ideally stand at the very aft end of the cockpit. This is not possible on the version with a wheel. There is not enough space. Regardless of whether you are turning or pushing: You need coloured cloth for the way to leeward, otherwise it's no fun.

The situation is different downwind: gusts are acknowledged with pressure and the boat sets off. If the gust prevails, a pull on the backstay helps, or the traveller moves to leeward and the pressure can be reduced to a desired level. This is just right for a sporty cruising yacht.

A steering wheel is installed on the test ship. Its movements are transferred to the quadrant via a rod. This works perfectly and without any play. If a traveller is installed, it divides the cockpit and no table can be attached to the steering column. However, the owner has found a retrofit solution for a table. However, it is stored in the large cockpit locker when not in use.

Tiller provides more legroom in the aft chamber of the Hanse 315

Keyword steering wheel: a tiller would certainly look good on the boat. It is agile and a lot of sailing power comes from the main. The helmsman can operate it easily when sitting on the high edge on the specially flattened coaming with the extension in his hand. The traveller and sheet are then perfectly within reach. The tiller also provides more legroom in the aft cabin and, when folded up, is virtually unobtrusive in the harbour.

There are also some nice details on deck: The rigging is continuous, so the shrouds can be trimmed from the deck. The gas locker is easily accessible, and two lockers to the side of the passageway to the bathing platform offer plenty of space in addition to the already large storage space on the port side. It could be a little better organised. Things quickly disappear into the depths.

The shallow anchor locker is not so good. The chain will quickly pile up behind an (optional) anchor windlass. Compromise: This is also the reason why the bunk in the foredeck can be so - almost unnecessarily - long.

The Hanse 315 is like a VW Golf. It works well, has space for four and can also be a little sporty on the road if desired. It is also visually appealing without being particularly experimental. All of this also applies to the Hanse. Anyone looking for one should make sure that the hull-deck connection is still intact, plan to have the hull painted (if it is coloured and this has not already been done) and check the area around the keel for hairline cracks inside. This would be an indication of running aground damage. Otherwise, the usual suspects are waiting: The saildrive boot will often still be the first one, given the years of manufacture, and has therefore reached the end of its service life. The same applies to the standing rigging after 15 years.

Otherwise, the Hanse 315 is a very worthwhile alternative in the club of 40,000-euro second-hand yachts, precisely because it has achieved an excellent compromise.

Gelcoat: Coloured coatings in particular tend to fade. Polishing often no longer helps. The result is an expensive repainting. White gelcoat is less susceptible

The 315 replaced the 312 in 2005 and was replaced by the 320 in 2007. During this time, the ship was built around 330 times. Examples with a tiller are rare. As was customary at Hanse, many ships were delivered with coloured gelcoats. The deep keel dominates the draught. 30 hp diesel as an option

The ship costs from 50,000 euros second-hand. More or less depending on the equipment and condition. The boats are usually sold quickly, so if you see one you like, don't hesitate for long.

Hanse 315 boat test – packing a lot into a small space

  • Toby Hodges
  • February 10, 2016

As other builders go up in size, Hanse looks to the smaller end of its fleet to bring in the customers. And the Hanse 315 packs a lot in a small space, says Toby Hodges

What do Tesco Metro, iPad Mini and a Hanse 315 all have in common? They are the result of big firms concentrating the best of their products into a more compact, feature-rich, yet user-friendly version.

Take Tesco, UK’s biggest superstore chain. Its success, from the 1980s to today, is linked with its ability to adapt quickly to consumer trends using the size, range and variety of its stores. Its smaller, compact Metro branches, which first appeared in 1994, are a clever example of the company’s versatility.

Hanse Yachts was founded at around the same time (early 1990s) and soon developed a wide range of modern production cruising yachts with broad appeal. But recently you could be forgiven for thinking that its success with large yachts would tempt the Greifswald yard to focus on the top end of the scale. Hanse has sold over 175 of the 575 in three years, and has taken six orders for the yet-to-launch 675.

However, Hanse’s 315 shows that keeping equal focus on the smaller sizes is smart. It attracts people into a brand where, as with supermarkets, retaining loyalty becomes key.

The same applies to other large yacht builders, so why should you be interested in this particular 30-footer? In my opinion, the Hanse 315 is the best recent example of a compact big yacht. It takes many intelligent ideas seen on larger modern designs and includes them in a size that is both practical and fun to sail.

The 315 has more volume than the 325 it is replacing, a larger sailplan and deeper L-keel (providing CE category A). As Tesco’s Metro branches have done to larger stores, Hanse’s 315 could render many larger yachts obsolete.

The shape of things to come

Many of the best features of the 315 stem directly from her hull shape. Judel Vrolijk has given her a modern performance profile that closely resembles that of her sister brand Dehler. Benefits from this shape are felt in the cockpit space and generous volume aft. Broad aft beam creates the option of twin wheels – she’s the smallest production yacht to have this.

But the prime advantage of her hull design, the calling card of the 315, is her superb sailing ability. It is the reason why I wanted a second sail after a brief autumn outing during the European Yacht of the Year trials.

Her flared quarters look aggressive and, together with a near plumb stem and stern, help maximise waterline length when heeled. The result is that she is simply a delight to sail, aided by steering that is superlight and responsive.

1yw2,12,15-269 copy

The 315 is a surprisingly addictive boat to helm. Most yachts take some getting used to, as you try to get the balance right, tweaking the control lines. The Hanse is instantly playful, encouraging you to throw her through tacks and maximise your time on the water.

UK agent Phil Dollin thought a reef or two might be prudent with the wind gusting over 20-25 knots as we left the Hamble River. But with flat water and an interest in seeing how she responds when pushed, he agreed to keep full sail. It helped to demonstrate how manageable this 30-footer is.

Advantages of a self-tacking jib

The 315 brings sailing back to basics, thanks in part to her single-point mainsheet and a self-tacking jib. Admittedly, there were times when Dollin needed to play the main as we headed into chop and Force 6 gusts around Calshot, or when I would feather the main if I were sailing her solo. But she only rounded up once, ever so politely, when over-pressed.

The vang and backstay are sufficiently adjustable to flatten the large main to keep it driving rather than overpowering the boat.

The self-tacking jib helps make sailing smooth and easy. It also aids confidence, especially with the breeze up. Instead of gybing, for example, you can just throw in a handbrake turn – a 270° tack – which only requires the helmsman to spin the wheel.

One problem we found when doing this with the single-point mainsheet was that it can get caught on the (optional) primary winches when it goes slack.

I was surprised to hear that few Hanse owners in the UK opt for a downwind sail. A furling asymmetric at least would top my extras list to help compensate for the small headsail area and its poor sheeting angle when sailing deep – the narrow width of the track is dictated by the coachroof to which it is mounted.

yw2,12,15-285 copy

I would also welcome the ability to trim the jib from the wheel, by creating a lead from the coachroof to a primary. For couples, or those intending to sail solo, the standard tiller steering might be a more practical option for adjusting main and jib trim.

The Hanse 315 is sprightly and spirited to sail, particularly upwind and close reaching. We averaged around 7 knots close-hauled, where 32° to the apparent wind (45° true) was the sweet spot. Pinch more and the mainsail loses power and speed drops off quickly.

Reaching speeds touched 8 knots, well heeled – nothing to get worried about, just enough to give a safe thrill. The twin wheels help maintain the sporty feel with direct feedback via Jefa linkage.

The down sides of entry-level

Building a compact cruising yacht with a wealth of positive features for an entry-level price invariably involves drawbacks.

The pushpit is the first downside I took issue with. Hanse offers a beamy swim platform, above which is just a single guardwire to protect the cockpit. We were quick to point out this safety deficiency during our trials of an early 315 model in La Rochelle.

During those same trials, the fitting supporting the optional genoa sheet arrangement became detached – it turns out there was no backing plate below the deck. Hanse has since addressed both problems on later models.

yw2,12,15-390 copy

The starboard steering column on the Hanse test boat in the Hamble also had play in it and it felt as if the mounting needed better reinforcement. Hanse commendably builds ten prototypes at this size, but these are issues that should be seen and resolved before production begins in earnest.

The test boat had a lot of optional extras, including an upgraded engine, twin wheels, laminate sails, sprayhood, heating, etc. It served as a good example of how the finish price of a production yacht bears little resemblance to its base price. With everything included, the test boat cost double the £50,000 standard price.

Looking through the spec sheet, I’d still want an offwind sail as well – and, having seen one hull in metallic blue, perhaps even a vinyl wrap.

Standing room

Pause at the foot of the companionway and you’ll notice something rather unusual for a yacht of this size – you can stand. By lowering the sole to the minimum height above the bilge, Hanse has created 6ft 3in headroom here.

This has a greater impact than you might imagine; it really gives the impression of a much larger yacht below. You can stand to work at the galley or chart table. The only problem is that you soon forget you are on a 31ft yacht, and promptly bump your head when going forward.

1yw2,12,15-17 copy

The layout is beautifully in proportion. The design team has been particularly clever with the cabins. Rather than just have a vee berth and open bulkhead forward, they have created an option for a cabin with a door. To achieve this, the length of the berth is reduced and insert boards used each side aft. This creates three different options: a child’s berth, a single berth with changing seat, or a full double vee berth.

However, it is the aft cabin that will be used by owners – if they can get into it. The entrance is short and narrow, but once there, you are rewarded with a giant athwartships double berth that extends under the cockpit.

yw2,12,15-55

It is wide enough, in fact, to be used as a longitudinal single berth should you want to. An angled backrest against the hull encourages you to recline comfortably in the area with most seated headroom.

The port saloon sofa is long enough to sleep on and the saloon is generous in size. Although the heads is also large, it feels rather bleak. It’s simply a wet room, a glassfibre pod that brings home the mass-production nature of the build. But there is plenty of light and 6ft headroom and it puts practicality first, including space to hang wet weather gear over the shower tray.

Hanse owners can escape the ‘cloned’ feel to some extent thanks to the numerous options on offer. There is a multitude of colour options inside and out, including gelcoat tints or vinyl wraps, upholstery and veneer finish. I was impressed to see big boat features as standard too, such as LED lights that can be dimmed or controlled from a smart touch panel.

As Tesco’s slogan says: ‘Every little helps.’

Be realistic, how many large cruising yachts would you really want to take out for a quick spin, two-up? I don’t know of many that I could or would want to do what we did during our test sail: hop aboard for a photoshoot, throw her around and sail her solo at times while over-canvassed. Yet the Hanse 315 was a joy, despite the dull winter conditions.

The price might not be quite as attractive as it might seem at first glance – not exactly ‘entry level’ by the time you’ve ticked enough boxes to make the boat comfortable – but the 315 still represents good value.

There were a few concerns with build quality on deck, signs that Hanse is perhaps cutting corners to keep cost down, but this is related to the larger issue of trying to create a truly affordable new yacht.

That aside, if you want a small family cruiser or a sporty, compact yacht, look no further. The Hanse 315 has the space and pace of a 35-footer with the price and practicality of a 30-footer. She puts the basics back into enjoyable sailing. Light and manageable, easy and fun, she has a shape that ensures an entertaining ride.

When done well, it is the convenience of a compact model, whether that be electronics, supermarkets or cruising yachts, that attracts the customers to come back.

The sister of doomed teen Hannah Lynch, who died on a superyacht after it was struck by a mini-tornado, has spoken out for the first time.

Tributes continue to pour in for victims of the sunken 56m yacht, the Bayesian, which went under following a wild weather event on Monday. Among the victims are the yacht’s owner, UK tech billionaire Mike Lynch, and his daughter Hannah.

Mr Lynch, once dubbed “Britain’s Bill Gates”, had invited friends and family onto the boat in Italy to celebrate his recent acquittal in a massive US fraud case.

But the $58 million yacht was struck by something akin to a mini-tornado before dawn on Monday as it was anchored off Porticello, near Palermo.

Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah died on a superyacht last week after it was struck by a mini-tornado.

Mr Lynch and his daughter were among six bodies recovered from the wreckage. The 18-year-old was the last person unaccounted-for with the body of Mr Lynch and four others recovered by rescue divers on Thursday.

Fifteen people were rescued, including Mr Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares, a mother with her one-year-old baby , and New Zealand captain James Cutfield who is recovering in hospital.

Hannah’s sister Esme has spoken out for the first time since the tragedy, remembering her younger sister as her “little angel”.

“Sometimes beaming with a smile, sometimes cheeky, sometimes for advice,” she said in a statement.

The body of Mr Lynch, 59, was found on Thursday and that of his daughter, Hannah, on Friday.

“No matter what, she brought boundless love to me. She was endlessly caring, passionately mad, unintentionally hilarious and the most amazing, supportive and joyful sister and best friend to me.

“And on top of all this, she had even more love to give endlessly to all her friends and passion to give to her incredible studies and goals. She is my little angel, my star.”

Friends also paid tribute to Mr Lynch, who helped pioneer a form of artificial intelligence, describing him as a pioneer of the British tech scene.

“Mike was the most brilliant mind and caring person I have ever known,” friend Andrew Kanter said.

“There is simply no other UK technology entrepreneur of our generation who has had such an impact on so many people.

“His passion for life, knowledge and all those around him was instantly inspiring to everyone he met, and he will be sorely missed.”

The Lynch family have said they are “devastated” and “in shock” but are being “comforted and supported by family and friends”.

Sky News reported a spokesperson for the family said in a statement on Friday that the Lynch family is “devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends”.

“Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy. They would like to sincerely thank the Italian coastguard, emergency services and all those who helped in the rescue. Their one request now is that their privacy be respected at this time of unspeakable grief.”

Hannah was just 18 years old.

Sicilian prosecutors said Saturday they were investigating possible manslaughter as it emerged that trapped passengers scrambled for air pockets after it went down.

“The Public Prosecutor’s Office of Termini Imerese has registered a file with the state against unknown persons, hypothesising the crimes of negligent shipwreck and multiple negligent manslaughter,” state prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio told reporters on the Italian island.

But he said he was only announcing the probe due to the huge international interest in the case, stressing: “We are only in the initial phase of the investigations.

“At this stage, precisely because the investigation could develop in any way, we are absolutely not ruling anything out.”

How the ship went under is being pieced together by investigators, with Girolamo Bentivoglio Fiandra of the fire service telling reporters it sank by its stern and came to rest on its right side on the sea bed, some 50m.

He said the passengers trapped inside “took refuge to seek safety in the cabins on the left side where somehow the last air bubbles formed”.

“We found the first five bodies in the first cabin on the left side, and the last body in the third cabin on the left side.”

‘Human error’

Italian Sea Group, Giovanni Cotantino said ‘human error’ is to blame for the tragedy.

The firm that built the superyacht said “human error” is to blame .

Last Thursday, the head of Italian Sea Group, Giovanni Cotantino, said the tragedy could have been avoided after the $58 million ship capsized in a water spout.

“Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors,” Mr Costantino said.

The company, which includes the Perini Navi company, built the luxury 56-metre yacht in 2008.

New Zealand captain James Cutfield, who survived the tragedy, was questioned for several hours by authorities as an investigation into what happened has been launched.

Mr Costantino told Italy’s Corriere della Sera newspaper that bad weather was forecast and all the passengers should have been gathered at a pre-arranged assembly point, with all the doors and hatches closed.

He claimed the Bayesian was “one of the safest boats in the world” and was virtually “unsinkable”, telling Italian publication Corriere della Sera: “The passengers reported something absurd, that the storm came unexpectedly, suddenly. That is not true. Everything was predictable.”

Captain grilled

Prosecutors, who have been interviewing survivors from the tragedy, questioned captain James Cutfield for several hours about the disaster, Giornale Di Sicilia reported.

The 51-year-old, who managed to escape from the vessel, told Italian media, “We just didn’t see it coming” , when speaking of the abrupt nature of the water spout.

There is no suggestion of any wrongdoing by Mr Cutfield.

  11. Hanse 315: All-rounder is good enough even when used

YACHT review of the Hanse 315. Finding a good compromise is undoubtedly an art. Sporty sailing characteristics require low weight, but this is often at the expense of living quality.
