The Custom Life With Evan K. Marshall

  • By Thomas  Chatterton  Williams
  • Updated: October 24, 2016

Evan K. Marshall

Some people are both fortunate and driven enough to do exactly what they were born to do. Evan K. Marshall, the 57-year-old founder and head of EKM Limited, is one such lucky man. Born in Manhattan to the children of Barbadian immigrants, his exposure to yachts was early and consistent. His novelist mother encouraged his creative inclinations while his father, a sociologist-turned-executive at AT&T, docked a cabin cruiser at the 79th Street Boat Basin, a short distance from the family’s Upper West Side apartment and where Malcolm Forbes kept his legendary Feadship The Highlander . He began to draw yachts as a boy, poring over his father’s subscription to Yachting magazine. With a degree in architecture from Hampton University, he enrolled at the Yacht Design Institute in Maine. After stints at Sparkman & Stephens and Winch Design, he opened his own firm in 1993.

I visited Marshall at EKM’s London offices on a rainy day in June, just before the Brexit. Nestled in Plantation Wharf, in a labyrinthine live-work complex across the Thames from Chelsea, the six-person studio designs the exteriors and interiors of some of the world’s most sought-after custom and semi-custom yachts — from a modest duplex overflowing with sailing paraphernalia and books on Botticelli and the universe of Venetian interiors. On the second floor, across a short wooden patio that constitutes the entirety of his daily commute, is the airy apartment he shares with his Dutch wife and two children.

Marshall, who has a shaved head and flawless brown skin — as far as he’s aware, he’s the only black man in the world designing superyachts — cuts a meticulous figure in a blazer, jeans and two-tone monk-strap shoes. He flashes a huge smile when he pulls out a stack of decades-old Yachting issues from under a sofa and pages through them.

“Jack Hargrave, William Gardner, Edwin Monk,” he says, rattling off the names with the kind of reverence another man might reserve for legends of music or sport. “They had styles you could identify just from looking at the drawings.”

Lady Sara, Trinity

Marshall, on the contrary, prides himself on remaining as transparent as possible. “Nowadays, things have changed to the extent that clients for the larger custom boats are looking for a unique style that’s personal to them,” he says. “I’ve tried to develop a reputation where we’re known for being able to work with diverse styles, from very contemporary to very traditional.

“At the same time, there’s a job that we do for Ocean Alexander — we have about 10 different models for them,” he adds. “We have to think very differently about the design, almost like an automotive design, looking at the market and really understanding what the buyer of that [semi-custom] boat expects.”

Out of 126 designs during the past 23 years, Marshall estimates that 90 have been built. Within that number, it’s impossible to say which is his favorite. He grabs an iPad and swipes through a range of eye-watering beauties, from the faintly Asian to the gold-plated baroque, from an interior sheathed in black-and-white rock ’n’ roll photos to one with painstakingly engraved mirror panels rendered in highly polished chrome.

“A lot of owners will say, ‘Evan, don’t let me do something that will make it harder to sell,’” but others want to leave their mark, and they encourage Marshall to think creatively.

“Straight off the bat, as soon as I started [EKM Limited], I was doing a boat, a house and offices. I was working out of my apartment, doing it all. No social life, but a great way to start a company.”

“This was my first client,” he says, scrolling to a series of colorful photographs of a palace in Austria filled with marble and gilt and what seems like every other luxury material known to humanity. Marshall worked on all aspects of the space, down to the table settings — store-bought items were blended with custom designs to amplify the aesthetic.

“We did his boat and offices, and then he asked me to get involved in portions of his house in Salzburg. He was very over the top. Everything was Versace. And then things that I designed for him, this fireplace, I knew he liked naked women,” he says with a chuckle, highlighting twin columns straight out of a Renaissance fresco. “We replicated from sourcebooks images of other pieces made in Italy.” Yet, after all that, the house remains vacant. “For tax purposes, he had to leave Austria. He moved to Liechtenstein and Ibiza.”

Trinity Lady Linda

That’s par for the course in Marshall’s line of work: Buyers change their minds or simply lose interest. Still, he does not consider the work to be in vain. At the time he landed the palace job, he was working with Andrew Winch. When his employer and the client had a falling out, he shrewdly proposed to mediate, leaving Winch on the condition of setting up his own company and overseeing the completion of the Austrian’s project.

“You have an opportunity like that, you’ve got to jump,” he says. “Straight off the bat, as soon as I started [EKM Limited], I was doing a boat, a house and offices. I was working out of my apartment, doing it all. No social life, but a great way to start a company.”

With Marshall’s architectural background, EKM Limited was, from the beginning, a one-stop shop for clients who wanted to unify the visual language of their yachts and homes. Today, the residential aspect of the practice is expanding.

“Now we’re getting involved in some projects in Moscow,” he says about the Russian developer’s apartment complex.

“The reason this company contacted us initially was that they wanted a nautical theme for the lobby and common spaces. They were trying to come up with a marketing angle. As it evolved, it didn’t become a whimsical design, but a sophisticated interpretation because the site is close to a port in Moscow. Hopefully, with this company, we’re on the verge of doing several more buildings.”

EKG Design

Marshall doesn’t have a vessel he calls his own, but a lot of his friends have yachts.

“I do a fair amount of sailboat racing on Skylar [a restored 53-foot Sparkman & Stephens design from 1937], the boat of Tara Getty, the grandson of John Paul Getty. In fact, they’re sailing now in Argentario, Italy. The racing that we do on the older boats, it’s a whole other era. The boat’s impeccably maintained. It’s a piece of jewelry. Then he has two other classic yachts we stay on.”

But isn’t it frustrating not to have a mega-yacht of his own? I venture. “How are you getting home?” he parries with the smile of a man who controls his own fate. I mutter something about the Overground and the Tube before he answers his own question. “Matter of fact, I’ll give you a ride.”

IAG King Baby

We duck out across the deck through his home and down a flight of stairs into the building’s garage, where he mulls over the otherworldly decision between a sea-green 1960 Aston Martin DB4 and a metallic-blue 1966 Jaguar E-Type, both perfectly preserved — easily a cool million in vintage coupes. We lower ourselves into the second option, and as we exit the complex, the rain has cleared.

A man standing beside a new Bentley cranes his neck to admire our ride as we drive by. Marshall gestures toward the river and notes that the zoning law is likely to change soon.

He’ll be able to dock a boat, something modest for his own family like the cabin cruiser his father had, right outside their apartment in the heart of the city.

Rocking the boat: how evan k. marshall became a leading yacht interior designer.

“I never liked those old, slow boats much as a kid,” reminisces Evan K. Marshall about the sailboats that dotted the New York City waterways he plied as a youth in his father’s motorboats . “I used to like to go by them fast and give them a good rocking.” At age 63, Marshall, one of the planet’s top marine interior designers, has yet to cease rocking boats.

Related A Master Class in American Boatbuilding

Born in the late 1950s to Paule Marshall, a prominent novelist, and Kenneth Marshall, a civil-right activist turned AT&T executive, Evan K. Marshall grew up on the water. “My father always had grand ambitions of buying a classic boat and fixing it up,” he says. “We had an Elco because even in the ‘60s an Elco was considered a classic, and I remember on my 6th birthday we packed all my friends into the car and drove to the boat to take it out, and when we got there, there was about two feet of water in the cabin.”

But Marshall’s spirit was not dampened. In fact, his fascination with boat design would only grow as he got older. “We used to keep our boats at 79th Street Boat Basin—it was the place to be in those days. Malcom Forbes used to keep his [162-foot Feadship] Highlander there. And back then nothing was locked up, not like now, so I could climb around the docks and the boats as a kid, and I got an education in boat design that was impossible to replicate anywhere else.”

Related The Worth Guide to Riding the Luxury Electric Boating Wave

It was a schooling that would serve him generously in the years to follow. Marshall worked his way through the ranks from fairing boats by hand to nautical design school to a plum job at the legendary naval architecture firm Sparkman & Stephens , and now he runs his own eponymous firm located in London that works on yachts, both production and custom, as well as homes. And he is renowned for successfully tackling jobs dispensed from some of the most demanding clients on Earth.

“Working with high-net-worth people, a lot of times you think all you need is good design,” he says, “but so much of it is knowing how to work with people that are very demanding and who have high expectations. I love it, but it can be challenging. These are people who don’t like to hear ‘no.’ There’s no room for screwups. You can’t show up to this party if you don’t bring your A-game. And to me, that’s what it’s all about. I never make excuses—if we screw it up, we own it, and we eat it. I don’t care if that cuts into my profit; it’s much more important to me to keep that high level of trust with the client.”

Related Is Green Yachting the Next Wave?

Aside from his exemplary levels of conscientiousness, what also makes Marshall stand out is his deep level of understanding of the interior design space, and particularly how it relates to yachts. “With interior design, the initial thing to get right is space planning, squeezing every ounce out of the space,” he says. “That’s a real skill, and you acquire it by drawing layouts, and that’s what I’ve been doing since I was 5 or 6 years old. It’s as important to me as styling. When I have the initial conversation with the owner, I start there. And once the layout is fixed, you start figuring out furniture based on the tastes of the client. It all comes together like a pyramid; you start with the basics and refine it as you go up, all the way to the top.”

And making it to the top is something that Marshall has always had in his design.

What does it mean to you to be an ISS judge? I always enjoy having the opportunity to be inspired and celebrate my colleagues in the industry as they endeavour to create beautiful and valued projects for their own clients. Being a part of a process of reviewing and selecting outstanding designs is a very rewarding experience for me.

What do you like about the ISS Design & Awards Gala? Like any industry it is important that we acknowledge our achievements and what better way to do so where we can get together with our colleagues and friends and have a wonderful celebration.

How did you get your start in the yachting industry? Considering that I sketched my first boat at the age of five it would be fair to say that I got my “start” in the industry during that period of my life boating with my family with my sketchpad always with me. From that early age I never had any other career aspirations other than becoming a boat designer.

What is your favorite part of your job? I would say there are two aspects of my work that I find the most rewarding. The first is that initial creative flush at the stage one realizes a great idea is starting to take shape. The second most rewarding part of my work is when a project reaches its completion and is handed over to its pleased and satisfied owners.

Who has influenced you the most? I drew some of my most important inspiration and design philosophy as a young child gazing at boats designed by the American yacht designer David Martin who was responsible for the design of our Pacemaker 31’ as well as many other American production boats from the mid 60s and early 70s. His clean crisp lines and timeless styling forms the backbone of my approach to yacht design.

What is the most effective daily habit you possess? The ability to stay focused and concentrated on my work

What advice do you have for the next generation? Love what you do!

The superyacht designer talks about his lifelong passion for boats.

“I grew up boating with my family in and around New York City. My father had owned small cabin cruisers since before I was born. We’d head up to Long Island Sound, Newport or Nantucket for holidays. This was before electronics or anything like that, so when I got bored on the boat I was given a pen and a piece of paper and told to draw something. That was when I started drawing boats. I still have a lot of those sketches starting from around four years old. I was hooked. I didn’t want to become anything else and I drew incessantly.

I took a degree in architecture, then afterwards I did a degree in small craft design at the Yacht Design Institute in Maine and went to work straight away for Sparkman & Stephens in New York. After about three years, I started to see what European designers were doing and decided to visit the Genoa Boat Show. That was 1986.  As soon as I walked in, I was blown away and realised Europe was where I wanted to be.

#humansofyachting – Evan K Marshall

I wanted to get into yacht exterior styling and interesting interior design, but I didn’t have a portfolio to show off my skills as most of my stuff was naval architecture-oriented. So I spent six months after work developing a portfolio of Italian-inspired designs. When they were ready to be presented, I resigned and moved to Paris and started interviewing with different design offices. I ended up working with Andrew Winch for three years and then left to start up on my own.

Understanding our clients’ tastes is something I’ve worked hard at. You have to listen, you have to be sensitive and you have to be open. It can’t always be about what you like. A lot of us have relatively narrow personal taste – when you suspend that and look at things through the eyes of the client – you discover that your own taste also evolves. Like someone that appreciates all different styles of music, I now appreciate all different styles of design.

#humansofyachting – Evan K Marshall

Some yachts today are on a par with high-end residential properties and in some cases they surpass them. We are able to create spectacular results because there are fewer boundaries; these boats are for private individuals, so they are not limited by the constraints that you might have in a corporate setting. For example, if Apple wanted some amazing new headquarters, there would still be a lot of constrictions and sacrifices that we don’t have in the yachting world.

Projects can take two to three years, so you need to have a comfortable and trusting relationship with your clients. I just returned from a refit in Malta – I’ve worked with the client now for almost 18 years; half of the pleasure is being in the company of somebody who has become a friend. After a meeting, we’ll go out to dinner, we’ll spend time in their home and see their family. I enjoy that aspect of the job very much – and you couldn’t do it if you didn’t have that kind of relationship with clients.

#humansofyachting – Evan K Marshall

Diamonds are Forever

I used to race on boats a lot but I stopped when I moved to the UK. Over the last seven years, though, I’ve been racing regularly with a friend who owns a 1930 Sparkman & Stephens boat. So I am now back in the thick of it doing some sailing. It’s particularly special for me as I used to work right next to the drawings of this boat, as my desk at Sparkman & Stephens was next to the archives, which I would occasionally pull out over my lunch break. It’s been great to reconnect with racing.

I often get inspired by cars and what the automotive industry is doing, and residential design also inspires me. Craftsmanship is also a big part of it. In Italy, there is a strong apprenticeship tradition so you might go to a furniture factory and there’ll be a couple of generations of workers there. Seeing pieces of furniture that are bespoke and well executed is something that many owners really enjoy. They want everything to be perfectly aligned and perfectly made. An important part of our role is understanding how materials behave, so that even if a client loves a certain fabric, you have to tell them it isn’t durable enough for a sofa, or you have to point out that a certain stone might have small imperfections or look slightly different to the sample.

#humansofyachting – Evan K Marshall

Once the boat is finished, there is a troubleshooting sea trial phase which is very important. People tend to encounter yachts in peaceful marinas but we always have to remember that these things are designed to go to sea and can be caught in the elements quite easily. As a sailor myself, I realize the importance of that.”

Design , interior designers , exterior designers, www.evankmarshall.com.

Established in 1993, Evan K. Marshall Ltd represents the evolution of a personal passion for drawing boats that was inspired by Marshall’s early love of the sea and boating with his family on their cabin cruiser the “Boni Joni”.

“As a youngster, every boat I drew in my sketch pads, in the margins of my schoolbooks, on paper napkins even, was driven by a desire to create designs that not only challenged conventional ideas, but offered truly innovative concepts.”

In his design office on the banks of the River Thames in London Evan Marshall and his team continue to adhere to that early philosophy. His company, EKM Ltd, is committed to realising its clients’ dreams by using their unique and inspired perspective on all aspects of design.

Marshall’s passion for innovation is expressed in the unique space planning that his office is renowned for, as well as the balanced and inspired exterior styling he brings to both custom and production yachts. Examples of his innovative approach to space planning can be found in the first tri-level Master Stateroom featured on a yacht (Opus II) and the first series of production yachts with split level Master Staterooms, (PR Marine, Destiny Yachts & Millennium Super Yachts) are all first in the yachting industry created by Evan K. Marshall. The style of Marshall’s interior designs can range from the most grand and opulent to the most subdued and cozy , which again is a hallmark of the company’s open philosophy regarding all aspects of design culture.

Above all, the cornerstone of Marshall’s design philosophy is the teams close collaboration with each client to realise their ideas and goals for each project. By listening to clients and respecting their requirements and wishes, EKM Ltd has established a reputation for creating truly personalised and inspired design solutions.

While specialising in both custom and semi-custom yacht design, both exterior and interior, Marshall’s office has also branched out into other areas of luxury design. These include residential projects, private coach interiors and several other special creative endeavours. Given that Marshall’s background includes training as both a naval and land-based architect, as well as an interior designer, these three disciplines guide and influence every creation his office produces.

Description

Evan K Marshall/Usonia V was founded in 1993 by Evan K Marshall. His studio represents all the hard work and personal passion for drawing. Evan's love for the sea began when he cruised with his family in the "Bony Joni". Since he was a small kid he draw in every piece of paper that he had a boat and in every one of them he tried to create designs that will challenge conventional ideas and offer advanced innovative concepts.

The company's philosophy adhere to the idea Evan had as a kid. They want to become true every dream the client have. Evan K Marshall/Usonia V uses particular and refreshing perspective on all of their design.

The passion they have for innovation is shown in the unique planning that his office is known for and the balanced and exterior concepts he brings to both custom and production of yachts. Some examples of this are the first tri-level Master Stateroom features on a yacht (Opus II) and the first series of production yachts with split Master Staterooms (PR Marine, Destiny Yachts & Millennium Super Yachts)

Evan K Marshall/Usonia V works in close collaboration with all of his clients so that he can fulfil all their ideas and goals for the project. He is known worldwide for creating truly personalized and inspired design solutions.

Marshall has also been involved in other luxury designs. He has done residential projects private coach interiors and several glamorous endeavors.
