The team at Winch Design have dreamt up a superstructure so unique that she promises to be unlike anything that has ever come before. Her exterior lines draw the eye up to the bridge and owner’s decks which are surrounded on all sides by curved floor-to-ceiling mirrored glass, the largest panel a staggering 6m in length. The statement glass reaches 180 degrees around the master suite meaning that sleeping guests can wake up in the morning fully immersed in their peaceful surroundings. The interior of Excellence, also penned by Winch Design, is a fitting match for her iconic exterior.

Providing the perfect opportunity for indulgent relaxation, she features a swimming pool and platform, as well as jacuzzi, sprawling beach club and impressive limousine tenders. Ensuring that when anchored she is as smooth as a spaceship floating in orbit, she is fitted with 'zero speed stabilizers' which work when the yacht is stationary, providing maximum comfort even when cruising through rough waters. Excellence smashes the mould and promises to turn as many heads in 20 years’ time as she does today. With her striking bow and her visionary, industry disrupting layout, Excellence brings forward a new era for superyacht design.

EXCELLENCE yacht interior

The interior of the EXCELLENCE yacht was designed by Andrew Winch, an English yacht designer specializing in the luxurious and unusual design.

The yacht perfectly combines indoor and outdoor living with her three-story glass atrium that allows the interior to be bright and open.

Fourteen guests find space on board in seven cabins, as well as a crew of 20 who have a designated area below deck. The interior of the yacht is decorated in beige and creme tones, perfectly complimented by dark wooden elements.

The EXCELLENCE yacht has a length of 80 meters (262.5 ft), a beam of 14.45 meters (47.4 ft), and a draft of 3.45m (11.3 ft).

Her twin MTU engines allow her to reach top speeds of 17 knots, although her average cruising speed lies at 14 knots. She carries 30,000 liters of water and 50,000 liters of diesel on board.

The EXCELLENCE yacht is the 7th largest yacht built by ​​the renowned German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen.

Her exterior was designed by Andrew Winch, who also worked on the interior of EXCELLENCE.

Her most unusual feature is definitely the reversed bow that is sure to catch the attention of onlookers anywhere she docks.

She has plenty of deck space that can be used for sunbathing or covered up with awnings if required.

On the main deck, a pool with a swim-up bar allows guests to relax and unwind. EXCELLENCE has a sizeable aluminum superstructure and an elongated steel hull.

It’s no surprise that a luxury yacht named EXCELLENCE has come out of the Abeking & Rasmussen shipyard which is known for the quality and size of its builds. 80m/262ft EXCELLENCE went to take the  Exterior Design Award and  Finest New Superyacht Award at the sixth Monaco Yacht Show Superyacht Awards Ceremony  this year, a product of meticulous engineering and design spanning four years from concept to launch.

The journey began at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in 2015 when the Owner of a fleet of luxury yachts named EXCELLENCE saw a concept for an 80-metre by British design studio Winch Design that would be built in conjunction with Abeking & Rasmussen – a shipyard he had used before. The latest EXCELLENCE would become the sixth superyacht of his fleet to bear the name.

Striking glass exteriors

If there is one material that characterises a modern luxury yacht, it’s the use of glass: Gone are the small portholes and square windows of yesteryear to be replaced by sweeping floor-to-ceiling windows that connect those on board to the surroundings. Nowhere is this more evident than aboard M/Y EXCELLENCE, where the amidships section sports a three-tier glass exterior of 25m/82ft. This mirrored glass is 8cm at its thickest and acts as insulation to reduce reliance on air conditioning systems. Held in place only by two slender steel frames, she represents a staggering engineering achievement. All these glazed surfaces match effortlessly with her silvery-white hull and superstructure, and onlookers are immediately drawn to the curve of her inverse bow which further adds to her futuristic appearance.

More than just good looks went into the making of this motor yacht, and guests on board can treat themselves daily to the main deck aft counter-current swimming pool with a glass-bottom panel, a private Jacuzzi on the Owner’s deck, and the bridge deck aft sports a 14-person alfresco dining table, a sumptuous lounge along the stern and a bar.

Personalised interior spaces

The Owner wasn’t considering charter use when EXCELLENCE was built and the result is a stunning contemporary living space from Winch Design that takes inspiration from the art deco styling to be found along Florida’s coast. His passion for sports cars is also on display and paid tribute to in styling accents such as the Cadillac-style cream sofas in the skylounge that have metal grille detailing, or the drawer handles which mimic the badges found on the front of cars.

The makassar wood and marble tops contrast harmoniously with the ivory white carpets and upholstery, and accents in light taupe to bring everything together. There are over 30 different marbles used on board, with golden onyx. Colourful and playful artwork – such as the Mickey Mouse statuette – personalises different spaces on board.

Amenities certainly aren’t lacking inside either, as guests move to the nine-person cinema or the main deck spa fitted with hemlock and teakwood stone from Paonazzo, and containing a sauna that has excellent views out of its large windows. The tender garage opens up through side hatches to launch and retrieve the custom tenders and create a more alfresco environment for those taking refreshments at the bar between the beach club and the tender garage. There is also a great selection of water toys stored here, including Scuba diving gear, a RS200 sailing dinghy and Seabobs.

The engine room is almost forgotten about by guests who enjoy the latest technology for reduced noise and vibrations, but twin MTU 12V 4000 M65R diesel engines provide the power to cruise from one destination to the next at 14 knots or at a top speed of 17 knots when in a hurry.

Accommodation

There are seven en-suite staterooms to provide for up to 14 guests on board, and the Owner was adamant that the six guest cabins would be of equal size (25m2/269ft2 in area) and of equal luxury to avoid competition. Each room is finished in high-end materials such as makassar wood, marbles and leathers. Mirror-sheen headboards emphasise the space and light within each cabin, which has TV entertainment opposite the bed and a desk right beneath the broad windows for guests who need to continue work but don’t want to miss out on the adventure.

Excellence – owner’s cabin

The Owner’s suite in particular is furnished with a wool carpet and enjoys sweeping forward views through floor-to-ceiling windows, and oversized armchairs accompany the daybed and desk to create a functional private space elsewhere, the en-suite bathroom has crocodile skin-style frosting patterns on the large showers and directly outside is an alfresco lounge where guests can wake up to coffee in the fresh air. The Owner also has access to a library/office space where silver leather is pressed with tobacco leaves and birdseye maplewood surround those seated at the desk.

Luxury yacht EXCELLENCE is an example of revolutionary engineering which will no doubt lead to further changes in superyacht design in the future – and she will be thoroughly enjoyed by her Owner and his guests in the cruising seasons to come.

PORTICELLO, Sicily (AP) — Divers searching the wreck of a superyacht that sank off Sicily found the bodies of five passengers Wednesday, leaving one still missing as questions intensified about why the vessel sank so quickly when a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed.

Rescue crews brought four body bags ashore at Porticello. Salvatore Cocina, head of the Sicily civil protection agency, said a fifth body had been located. Divers on-scene said they would try to recover it on Thursday while continuing the search for the sixth.

The discovery made clear the operation to search the hull on the seabed 50 meters (164 feet) underwater had quickly turned into a recovery one, not a rescue, given the amount of time that had passed and with no signs of life over three days of searching.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometer (a half-mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout.

Fifteen people escaped in a lifeboat and were rescued by a nearby sailboat. The body of the ship’s chef, Recaldo Thomas of Antigua, was recovered Monday.

Thomas was born in Canada, according to his cousin David Isaac, but visited his parents’ homeland of Antigua as a child, and moved permanently to the tiny eastern Caribbean island in his early 20s. Italian officials previously listed Antigua and Canada as the nationality of people on board.

The fate of six missing passengers had driven the search effort, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch , his 18-year-old daughter and associates who had successfully defended him in a recent U.S. federal fraud trial.

Lynch’s spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office investigators were acquiring evidence for their criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy despite no formal suspects having been publicly identified.

Questions have abounded about what caused the superyacht, built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, to rapidly sink, when the nearby Sir Robert Baden Powell sailboat was largely spared and managed to rescue the survivors.

Giovanni Costantino, head of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the ship maker, blamed human error for the disaster, which he said took 16 minutes. “The ship sank because it took on water. From where, the investigators will say,” he told RAI state television after he met with prosecutors.

Costantino cited AIS ship tracking data which he said showed the Bayesian had taken on water for four minutes when a sudden gust of wind flipped it and it continued taking on water. The ship straightened up slightly and then went down, he said.

But was it merely the case of a freak waterspout that knocked the ship to its side and allowed water to pour in through open hatches? What was the position of the keel, which on a large sailboat like the Bayesian might have been retractable to allow it to enter shallower ports?

“There’s a lot of uncertainty as to whether it had a lifting keel and whether it might have been up,” said Jean-Baptiste Souppez, a fellow of the Royal Institute of Naval Architects and the editor of the Journal of Sailing Technology. “But if it had, then that would reduce the amount of stability that the vessel had, and therefore made it easier for it to roll over on its side,” he said in an interview.

The captain of the sailboat that rescued survivors said his craft sustained minimal damage — the frame of a sun awning broke — even with winds that he estimated reached 12 on the Beaufort wind scale, which is the highest hurricane-strength force on the scale.

He said he had remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship’s position as the forecast storm rolled in.

“Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea,” Karsten Borner said in a text message. But he said that might not have been possible for the Bayesian, given its trademark 75-meter (246-foot) tall mast.

“If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea,” he said.

Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight, sub-compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water.

The underwater search continued in dangerous and time-consuming conditions. Because of the wreck’s depth, which requires special precautions, divers working in pairs could only spend about 12 minutes at a time searching, though reinforcements outfitted with special equipment to enable longer dives were on the wreck Wednesday.

In all, some 27 divers took rotations, including four who helped with recovery after the 2012 Costa Concordia disaster off Tuscany. They called the Porticello wreck a “little Concordia,” fire crews said in a statement.

The limited dive time was aimed in part at avoiding decompression sickness, also known as the “bends,” which can occur when divers stay underwater for long periods and ascend too quickly, allowing nitrogen gas dissolved in the blood to form bubbles.

“The longer you stay, the slower your ascent has to be,” said Simon Rogerson, the editor of SCUBA magazine. He said the tight turnaround time suggested the operation’s managers were trying to limit the risks and recovery time after each dive.

“It sounds like they’re operating essentially on no decompression or very tight decompression, or they’re being extremely conservative,” he said.

Divers were also working with debris floating around them, limited visibility and air tanks on their backs.

“We are trying to advance in tight spaces, but any single thing slows us down,” said Luca Cari, spokesman for the fire rescue service. “An electric panel could set us back for five hours. These aren’t normal conditions. We’re at the limit of possibility.”

The body of UK tech tycoon Mike Lynch was recovered Thursday from his sunken yacht off Sicily, as the search continued for the last of the six people missing -- his teenage daughter.

Specialist divers were still looking for a missing woman, a coastguard official told AFP, with a source close to the investigation having earlier indicated Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah had yet to be found. 

On Wednesday they pulled up four bodies from the wreck of the "Bayesian", while another was brought onland in Porticello, on the north shore of the Italian island near Palermo, Thursday morning. 

The latest grim discovery brings the death toll to six, after the body of a man believed to be the yacht's chef was found shortly after the ship went down in a storm before dawn on Monday. 

The 56-metre (185 feet) British-flagged sailing boat had been anchored some 700 metres off Porticello when it was struck by a waterspout -- akin to a mini-tornado.

It sank within minutes. 

Fifteen people were rescued, including Lynch's wife, but the businessman and his daughter were among six people reported missing.

- 'Unimaginable grief' -

The passengers were guests of 59-year-old Lynch -- a celebrated technology entrepreneur and investor sometimes referred to as the UK's answer to Bill Gates -- celebrating his recent acquittal in a massive US fraud case. 

Lynch's lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda, and Jonathan Bloomer, the chair of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy, were also among the missing.

"This is an unimaginable grief to shoulder," the Bloomer family said in a statement Thursday.

Jonathan and Judy "were incredible people and an inspiration to many, but first and foremost they were focused on and loved their family and spending time with their new grandchildren", it said.

"Together for five decades, our only comfort is that they are still together now."

Emergency workers brought a hyperbaric chamber to the quayside Thursday, and could be seen performing a test run.

The chambers are used to treat or prevent decompression sickness in divers, commonly known as the bends.

"I would think the hyperbaric chamber has been brought in as a precaution" as the divers searching the yacht are descending to a great depth, Matthew Schanck from the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told AFP.

- 'Errors' -

Many questions remain about why the yacht sank, and on Thursday the head of the company which built the boat said the tragedy could have been avoided.

"Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors," said Giovanni Costantino, head of the Italian Sea Group, which includes the Perini Navi company that built "Bayesian" in 2008. 

He told Italy's Corriere della Sera newspaper that bad weather was forecast and all the passengers should have been gathered at a pre-arranged assembly point, with all the doors and hatches closed. 

Security camera footage of the ship from the shore showed the lights on its mast going out, which Costantino said indicated a short circuit, meaning that the ship had already taken on water. 

"A Perini ship resisted Hurricane Katrina, a category 5 (hurricane). Does it seem to you that it can't resist a tornado from here?" he told the newspaper.

- 'Trapped like mice' -

Costantino said it was "good practice when the ship is at anchor to have a guard on the bridge, and if there was one he could not have failed to see the storm coming".

"Instead it took on water with the guests still in the cabin. They ended up in a trap, those poor people ended up like mice in a trap," he said.

The "Bayesian"  boasted a 75-metre mast, the tallest aluminium sailing mast in the world, according to the Charter World website.

It was reportedly owned by Lynch's family.

Lynch was acquitted on all charges in a San Francisco court in June after he was accused of an $11 billion fraud linked to the sale of his software firm Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard.

A co-defendant, former Autonomy executive Stephen Chamberlain, died after being hit by a car on Saturday in England.

Italian authorities have opened a probe into the sinking, while the UK's marine accident investigation branch sent four inspectors to Palermo.

The builder of the sunken superyacht owned by British billionaire Mike Lynch, who died with six others after the vessel went down earlier this week , is blaming an "endless chain of errors" for the maritime disaster.

Flying under a British flag, the 184 foot Bayesian was built in 2008 by Italian builders Perini Navi and should've been "unsinkable" had proper procedures been followed, argues Giovanni Costantino, CEO of the Italian Sea Group, which owns the yacht manufacturer.

"Everything that has been done reveals a very long sum of errors," Costantino told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera in an interview, as translated by People . "The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor. And then why didn't the crew know about the incoming disturbance?"

Red Sky at Morning

An investigation into the sinking is ongoing. It's believed that a small waterspout , or a waterborne tornado, struck the vessel as it was anchored off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, around 5 am local time on Monday, according to  CNN .

At some point after encountering the fierce winds, the ship's towering mast — the second tallest aluminum mast in the world — snapped, before the vessel appears to have capsized and sank with 22 people on board.

Costantino argues — pretty bluntly, we have to say — that the crew and passengers should've anticipated the stormy conditions.

"The passengers reported an absurd thing, namely that the storm came unexpected, suddenly," he said in the interview, per People . "It's not true. Everything was predictable. I have the weather charts in front of me here. Nothing came suddenly."

"Ask yourself, why was no fisherman from Porticello out that night?" he added. "A fisherman reads the weather conditions and a ship doesn't? The disturbance was fully readable in all the weather charts."

Batten Down

Their errors didn't end there, according to Costantino, who said in the interview that there would've been "zero risk" had the right maneuvers been made.

The captain and crew, he further explained to the New York Times , should've turned on the engine, lifted anchor, steered the boat into the wind, and lowered the keel for extra stability, while the passengers should've been gathered in the deck's main hall.

Another precaution would be shutting all the doors and hatches on the ship's side and stern. Costantino claimed that the Bayesian could list, or tilt to one side, to 75 degrees without capsizing, and shouldn't have sunk. But if some of those doors and hatches were left open, he told NYT , the ship could've taken on water too quickly.

As it stands, it's unclear how many of these procedures were executed. The ship's captain, James Cutfield, survived the ordeal and was questioned by authorities, but has not spoken to the media.

It's worth noting that Costantino's arguments could be seen as trying to exonerate his company of any wrongdoing. That being said, the speed at which a vessel of Bayesian's size and reputation sank has stunned sailors and investigators , who are trying to understand why most of the crew survived while six passengers perished.

The body of British billionaire Mike Lynch has been recovered from the sunken luxury yacht off the coast of Sicily.

More than 20 people were on board the vessel – owned by the tech tycoon – when it was hit by bad weather and rapidly sunk.

Divers are still searching for the last missing person, believed to be Mr Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah.

British tech magnate Mike Lynch and five other people were missing after their luxury sailing yacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily early Monday, Italy’s civil protection and authorities said. Lynch’s wife and 14 other people survived.

Lynch, who was  acquitted in June  in a big U.S. fraud trial, was among six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off Porticello, when a tornado over the water known as a waterspout struck the area overnight, said Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency.

One body was recovered, and police divers spent the day trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) off Porticello where it had been anchored, rescue authorities said. They returned to the site after 10 p.m. to see if it would be possible to search through the night, when weather conditions were expected to worsen, said Luca Cari, spokesman of the fire rescue service.

It had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, the Italian coast guard said. A sudden fierce storm had battered the area overnight, and struck the place precisely where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian had been moored.

“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Cocina, noting that another superyacht nearby wasn't as badly damaged and helped rescue some of the 15 survivors, who included Lynch's wife Angela Bacares.

The Bayesian was notable for its single 75-meter (246-feet) mast — one of the world’s tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.

One of the survivors, identified as Charlotte Golunski, said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported, quoting the mother. The father, James Emsley, also survived, said Cocina.

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, said he had noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realized the ship had simply disappeared, ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported. Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.

Eight of those rescued were hospitalized while the others were taken to a hotel. One body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, said Cari, the fire rescue spokesperson. The rescue operations, which were visible from shore, involved helicopters and rescue boats from the coast guard, fire rescue and civil protection service.

Fisherman Francesco Cefalu’ said he had seen a flare from shore at around 4:30 a.m. and immediately set out to the site but by the time he got there, the Bayesian had already sunk, with only cushions, wood and other items from the superyacht floating in the water.

“But for the rest, we didn’t find anyone,” he said from the port hours later. He said that he immediately alerted the coast guard and stayed on site for three hours, but didn't find any survivors. “I think they are inside, all the missing people.”

He said he had been up early to check the weather to see if he could go fishing, and surmised that a sudden waterspout had struck the yacht.

“It could be that the mast broke, or the anchor at the prow pulled it, I don’t know,” he said.

Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries: In addition to Britain and the United States, passengers and crew were from Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain, he said.

Among the dead and missing, four were British, two were American, and one was a man with dual citizenship from Canada and Antigua, according to Luciano Pischedda, the Italian Coast Guard official overseeing the rescue operations.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was “providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families.”

Dutch foreign ministry spokesperson Casper Soetekouw said the lone Dutch citizen on board, a man, had been rescued and was not in life-threatening condition.

Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp.

The not-guilty verdicts followed an 11-week criminal trial in San Francisco that delved into the history of HP’s  2011 acquisition  of Autonomy, a business software firm founded by Lynch.

The  fraud accusations  represented a dramatic turn in the fortunes of an entrepreneur once described as the Bill Gates of Britain — a title he seemed to live up to when he netted an $800 million from the Autonomy sale.

The acquittal vindicated Lynch, who had vehemently denied wrong doing and portrayed HP as a technological train wreck.

“I’m looking forward to returning the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” Lynch said in a statement released after the verdict.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate 12 passengers in four double cabins, a triple and the master suite, plus crew accommodations, according to Charter World and Yacht Charters.

The vessel, which previously was named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag, featured a sleek, minimalist interior of light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions and photos on the charter sites.

Excellence V, the superyacht built with the charter market in mind

Excellence V has the luxury of space where it matters, which gives her wide side decks, a five-level lift encircled by a central staircase, three hull openings for boarding from the sea, large main-deck guest suites, a dedicated cinema, a water-front gym, a beach club, an owner’s deck and multiple outdoor lounges and spa pools.

‘The exercise was how to put the interior of a 78 metre superyacht into a 57 metre hull, and then we stretched it to 60,’ says Captain Shore. Shore has been with owner Herb Chambers since 1989, and the two of them have built a hugely successful charter following with their yachts, starting with the original 38.7 metre Feadship that was the first Excellence . ‘When he started designing this boat, more room was key, as was incorporating things not heard of five years ago,’ says Shore. ‘He knows what he likes, and we use a lot of input from our repeat charter guests.’

Thirty years of offering his yachts for charter has given Chambers an acute understanding of the market and what makes a yacht a success. For example, there is a handsome double cabin on the upper deck, just aft of the master suite and opposite the office, designed to accommodate a charterer’s children, bodyguard or doctor. An adjacent door, hidden in the paneling, gives this cabin access to the deck’s pantry and to the stairs to the galley and crew areas below, should the person occupying it be a staff member.

Flexibility is why there are three hull openings, too. By putting the beach club amidships to starboard, guests congregating there aren’t bothered by the launch and retrieval of the tenders, which happens at the stern, or by the use of the portside platform that doubles as a crew tender access point and a waterfront gym or massage room. Flexibility has also driven the provision of 10 different outdoor spaces for guests, including three bars and seven lounging areas.

A small asymmetrical saloon with a bar on the starboard side and a cool wood floor, leather walls, crocodile tabletops and velvet chairs forms the transition from the aft arrivals deck to the interior. Forward of this is the dining area, set apart by its leather flooring, Macassar table and black emperador marble and white onyx countertops. This splash of drama sets the stage for the beautiful and dramatic foyer, with its gleaming glass lift, marble floors and a custom stair surround that is a majestic, four-storey, deco-style tableau of transportation.

A stairway takes guests on board Excellence V to a lower foyer opposite the beach club, and glass walls with a sandblasted pattern are all that separate them from the blue beyond when the club deck is lowered. Pass through the glass doors and this club is like an island. It has a shaded bar, a seating area and open teak decking large enough to host a couple of lounge chairs just above the surface of the sea. With its access to the stairs and lift, it’s a great place to arrive by tender.

The beach club isn’t the only reason to venture to the lower deck of the superyacht; forward is a state-of-the-art cinema with 102-inch screen and nine reclining chairs that vibrate along with the heavy bass audio tracks of action movies. A ‘candy store’ and beanbags for children complete the scene.

As pleasant as the guest cabins on Excellence V are (two twins, two doubles, and a VIP), the master suite is the sort of show-stopper you would expect of an owner with 30 years’ experience of messing about in boats. The suite’s subtle arrangement of doors and stairways helps give the owner privacy or informality when needed, and allows him to interact with the captain and crew. A fore and aft private outside staircase takes the owner down to the main side deck, while a circular staircase brings him directly to the bridge deck above. Thus the owner can arrive by tender or passerelle at the stern and move to his suite without going through the rest of the superyacht.

But the pièce de résistance is the waterfall, which splashes down the back of the superstructure and seems to disappear under the sole, only to reappear in a glass-fronted spa pool flanked by a bar with stools and sunpads. It’s a fitting feature for this yacht, which with equal emphasis mixes youthful relaxation and fun with the highest quality finish and technical sophistication.
