Omega 42 Charisma, SWE 301

Start: 2000

Case story: The dream-come-true project started the moment I realized that a boat builder was going to start building the classical yacht Omega 42 again. It was introduced in the 1970's, by the legendary yacht designer Peter Norlin.

I convinced the builder to re-think, and forced them to sell me the first one under the condition that I could re-design the interior into a modern design version, instead of the classical dark brown 1970 standard-ish format. They agreed eventually...

A new bright and white interior

The standard boat interior design has been based on "brown wood only" for too long. For natural reasons of course. But it was certainly about time to look at it from a new perspective – what is the purpose, what do we want from our life in a boat after a Millennium, what are we in fact doing in there when sailing and when not sailing, how much time do we spend indoor, what do we really need and what old-school stuff and habits can we exchange for new ones?

The hull was totally empty when I stepped into it the first time. My imagination went wild. I talked to Peter Norlin, I discussed with the boat builders, I doodled tons of drawings. I was curious about how a professional industry designer, not coming from the traditional boating industry, would approach such a golden opportunity. I met with renown designer Björn Dahlström and his team. After an hour together with them and their 3D CAM/CAD modelling computers, I realised that the point of no return was already behind me. I swallowed at least twice and then we made a deal to team up and challenge the boat interior status quo. Here is what our ideas and thoughts, and their talents, turned into:

omega 42 yacht

After comprehensive measuring of all angles, curves and proportions (since there was no reliable drawings available) the 3D software did its work. The idea was to open up, get the light in, re-think the purposes of a sailing life, introduce new materials and plan for the idea that scaling down on stuff onboard would bring joy to the overall experience and freedom.

omega 42 yacht

Another ambition evolved from a sailing project and food event we were dealing with at the time – Food Onboard with the Chef Of The Year – meaning that designing a galley, we should strive for making more room for cooking and less room for navigation. It felt logical as plotters and smartphones made navigation work easier outside by the tiller. Cooking and enjoying nice meals together should move up on the list of sailing lifestyle priorities in my mind. The meals are an as important part of sailing, as the sailing itself nowadays.

omega 42 yacht

I was in heaven. Suddenly I found myself discussing new bold ideas with legends like Peter Norlin and Mange Olsson, with extremely talented boat builders, professional chefs and awarded industry designers. I also had the opportunity to experience how the ideas materialize with the help of rocket science CAD/CAM-modulation software at Björn Dahlström Design Studio.

One year later...this is the final result by the boat builders: White surfaces and lots of light, no doors between cabins (how private is it anyway?), a see-through ladder, more "space" and less storage room (how much stuff do you need anyway?) and a generous galley and "dining room" for great cooking opportunities and socializing moments.

Press event in Stockholm, May 2001

To celebrate the re-birth of a new classical yacht, we arranged an event for media and other guests. We named the new design version "Omega 42 Charisma" and on May 8th the press release and invitation was sent out. Only a few days later we gathered on the pier of Riddarholmen in Stockholm city center, with the waters of Riddarfjärden and the City Hall – the Nobel Dinner palace – as our backdrop. It was truly a sunny day. Read or download the Press Release.

Legendary yacht designer Peter Norlin and other members of the team guided the media and sailed with them under the sun. The team in front of the sculpture "Solbåten" (the Sun Boat): Boat builders Niklas Lindell and Håkan Benghtsson, Chef of the Year 1999 Karl Ljung, yacht designer Peter Norlin and industry designer Björn Dahlström.

While at it... we introduced a redesigned Omega 42 logo.

A sleek yacht and classical archipelago cruiser

The Omega 42 was the undisputed queen of yachts in Sweden back in the 1970-ies. A 42-footer was considered a big yacht at the time and the sleek lines were loved by the owners and admired by other sailors. It had some constructions flaws being a single layer hull and slightly to weak construction for its size back then. Read the full story (in Swedish) on the Omega 42 Sällskapet website

The production went down eventually, but luckily the shipyard Lidköpings Båtsnickeri bought the rights to start again in 2000. They initiated a tight collaboration with the Omega 42 yacht designer Peter Norlin and the multi-experienced skipper and sail racing icon Mange Olsson, and a new stronger hull and and rigg construction was designed.

S/Y Johanna was the first in a new series of Omega 42s. The white, open interior created lots of buzz at the boat expos we participated in that summer of 2001. Young visitors entering the boat loved the design. But the conservative boat market was not yet ready for anything else but a classical brown wooden interior and the good old conservative solutions.

The Omega 42 Charisma version became a one-off. Our ideas in 2001 were 10-20 years too early for the market. But, in 2015 my phone started ringing again, people from Germany, Norway, Denmark, Luxembourg and France had spotted the "le classic beautyfyl lady with the white charismatic interieur". She was not mine when they called, my once in a lifetime experience and treasure was sold and owned by other sailors.

We caught the new exterior on video for the press...

The Omega 42 Charisma became a one-off. But hey...rumours told me some years ago that a shipyard in Germany was planning for a new production again. Maybe time has catched up and they will pick up some of our design ideas?

Unusual media coverage

We did get some, but very slim, coverage from the boat magazines in Sweden. They were for some reason hard to get at the time. But the largest interior design magazine was quite exited. They were non-sailors and curios for other reasons. Is that ironic or what? Anyway, they came and enjoyed a good Swedish fika, loved the ideas, the materials, the details, the light and the open space and published a seven page article about the new ideas and designs...

The interior design magazine Sköna Hem covered the story on seven pages. Read the article and translated English version here.

Swedish daily news papers showed enthusiasm about the re-borned classic and its bold interior design ideas.

Charter sailing during 2001-2003

Having a yacht measuring 42 feet and an archipelago offering 40.000 islands close at hand, opens up opportunities for hosting guests on sailing adventures. So, a side business was registered and officially launched. Smaller groups were invited.

We had great days out on the water and the journeys were much appreciated. Making people happy by sailing in the Stockholm archipelago is an easy fix. Valuable team building experiences within the groups comes as a bonus. Here are a few memory lane references:

Happy sailing, happy cooking... happy drinking?

Serving catered food was as joyful as the sailing in itself. We served home made sandwiches along the ride and we stopped at random islands for prepared picnics and barbeques. We used good recipes and trix from our Food Onboard project.   What about drinks, one might ask? For a skipper on duty it is of course a no-no. But serving the guests some chilled white wine for lunch or sharing a drink after the boat is tied up in a marina should not be a big deal. Well, in Sweden it is.

Here is a story I laugh about today: To serve alcohol on a charter event requires a permit. Fine with me. However, I had to be at least a certified "bartender" to just be able to apply for such a permit.

So I attended a bar tender admin education and 1500 Euros later I did complete the exam. But did the Swedish Authorities approve my application? Nope. Instead they unveiled the requirements I would need to fulfil onboard, in order to be allowed serve food and alcohol: A separate fridge for the guest's food, a separat dish washing area, active ventilation and a separate bathroom for staff etc. Thanks mate:-)

But I was also informed that if the sailing was not a public event but with a "closed group", and if the members of the group brought their own alcohol, I would not need a permit. Nor a bar tender certificate.

Hahaha... looking back I can not stop laughing about how insanely bureaucratic we are in this country. Or about how naive I was. But on the other hand I am still a certified bartender...

Bye bye...always a sad moment to leave the guests after a great day onboard.

Review of Omega 42

Basic specs..

Both the hull and the deck is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. The deck is a double deck which improves the indoor climate.

The interior is like most other boats made of teak. Teak has the advantage of being naturally very oily and therefore water-repellent, which is suitable on boats. The boat is equipped with 4-6 berths, a galley, 130.0 liter fresh water capacity and toilet facility. Note: the boat has also been sold to be self-made/-interiored, which means that the quality of each boat may vary.

The boat equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a genaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.

The Omega 42 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel.

The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed.

Omega 42 can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.67 - 1.77 meter (5.48 - 5.78 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Yanmar diesel engine at 20 hp (14 kW). The speed is 8.0 knots.

The transmission is a shaft drive. A shaft drive will in the long run require less maintenance than other types of drive e.g. a sail drive.

The fuel tank, which is made of stainless steel, has a capacity of 50.0 liters (13 US gallons, 10 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Omega 42 is 1.60, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.7 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Omega 42 is about 207 kg/cm, alternatively 1163 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 207 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1163 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

What is Relative Speed Performance?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 36m 2 (387 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Imagine a gentle breeze, a rippling crosswind sneaking along cobs and cuts, a few quick tacks past shoals and bays, sitting in the lee, with your hand trailing in the warm water. The sun is going down, but the summer night is short and sailing in the silence of the June night until dawn is too few to experience.   And with a jolt I wake up from my daydream, work work work, boat ads must be made, some more inspiring than others, and if it weren't for my considerable shack I would have bought this beauty any day of the week. Me and my girlfriend had an excellent experience on Swalan. It’s a beautiful ship and it sails and manoeuvres wonderfully. The home harbor and starting area is not so interesting, so sailing for the west coast is what we did. The west coast is beautiful and the many islands and villages are wonderful. Ola and Lars were very helpful, flexible, they responded quickly and were overal a joy to communicate with. We very much recommend this boat to expierenced sailors whom can appreciate a classical and fast ship.

Very easy going and polite. We had bad luck with the weather forecast but they where super flexible and got everything sorted for everyones best interest. The boat was clean and gas was filled as well. I would recommend them as renters any day.

We had a great time! The boat is a great sailor (because it sails fast and is easy to handle) and the environment is amazing! We sailed to Kattengat via the North of Orust. This was a really good trip with beautiful islands and coasts. The boat contains everything you need and the comfort is okay. The harbour was not very beautiful, but there was sanitair available. Eventually, we recommend this boat since it gives you a great sailing experience in an unbelievable surrounding!

When finally decision about dates where set. Everything went supersmooth. Left the boat in good conditions.

Kinesis is 35 per cent more efficient than any other yacht of her size. 35 per cent less power is needed to produce almost 16 knots top speed. These figures are based on tests in flat sea conditions. Contrary to the notion that seas of 1-2 metres would reduce performance, the reality is the opposite. In these conditions, 20 per cent more thrust is generated. Kinesis is one of a range of 42 metre yachts allowing owners to prioritise economy and speed. With an exceptional range of 4.000 miles, over 750 miles come free of charge thanks to remarkably frugal fuel consumption that is 30 per cent less than on a conventional displacement yacht.

FAST DISPLACEMENT HULL FORM The design of the hull form by Van Oossanen & Associates, is based on the Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) concept and has been optimized for speeds up to 16.5 knots. The required power levels for a yacht of this size and tonnage are better than ever and a comparison with a number of other successful designs show that the hull form is up to 20% to 40% more fuel economic. This is a truly “green” design – especially in combination with the Hull Vane. THE HULL VANE The 42 m Fast Displacement design is offered with and without the Hull Vane. The Hull Vane is an invention by Van Oossanen & Associates and consists of a foil fitted below the hull. This foil, when of a particular design and when fitted at a particular location, decreases the resistance of the hull. For the 42 m yacht this resistance decrease is 19 % at cruising speed and 23 % at maximum speed. This lowers the resistance of the already very efficient hull to a level never before achieved by a motor yacht of this length and displacement. At a design displacement of 350 tons, the yacht with Hull Vane achieves 15.9 knots with 2 x 1080 kW. At the cruising speed of 12 knots the power requirement is only 2 x 240 kW. The fuel consumption figures are correspondingly low. Detailed performance figures are given in the table and figure below. The Hull Vane has no moving parts and is constructed of steel. The strength and stiffness of the hull fitted with the Hull Vane is not adversely affected. The Hull Vane does not protrude below the bottom of the hull or outside of the waterline shape of the hull. MORE COMFORT IN WAVES An additional advantage of the Hull Vane is the significant reduction of unwanted motions in waves. Model tests have shown that in head seas, the pitching motion of the hull, both in terms of amplitude and acceleration levels, are decreased by up to 40%, depending on wave length and wave height. This is due to the damping effect of the foil below the hull. When the bow pitches upwards due to a wave the foil produces a force causing the bow downwards, and when the bow pitches downwards into a wave trough the foil produces a force causing the bow upwards. The result is a more comfortable behaviour of the yacht in waves.

Step by step: Companionway Concept

  • Yacht Refit

After weeks and weeks of stressful “real life” work I at last found a Saturday to be spent in the shipyard at the Lake Mueritz, where my Omega 42 is being built . Apart from the fact that I haven´t seen the progress on the boats for almost two full months (!) now, it was a very emotional visit. It´s just making me so happy and calm. Everybody should get his own boat build, believe me, the best sedative from the oddness and all the vulgarity of life. Anyway …

omega 42 yacht

As I stood there inside the boat – still, every time I visit the yacht it excites me how freaking big she is! – I noticed a detail: The ladder. Or to say: The non-apparent ladder. I´ve had quite some discussions and exchanged a whole lot of ideas with Heiner, boss of the shipyard, of how we could realize the companionway for my Omega 42. And since this is one crucial element of the yacht, I thought, that´s a nice detail to write an article about. So, here we go.

A central and hugely important part of the boat

Why is this something worth excruciating my head? Well, the entryway and the ladder/stairs in particular is a central element of a boat´s interior. It´s the connection between the cockpit, the “up”, and the salon, the “down below”. I don´t know how many times during an average sailing session one is entering up and down, but I guess it´s a couple of dozen times. Per day. I am sure, the companionway is the most used single part within the boat, much more used than the toilet . So, one cannot overestimate the importance of it.

In my job as a boat dealer I know for sure from hundreds of boat visits and boat tours with clients and prospects that people interested in buying a yacht have a special interest in the companionway. It should be easy to use, not too steep and safe to utilize even in rough weather. So, for example, Beneteau has a motto: No companionway on an Oceanis should be steeper than 45 degrees! It´s also important that, when going up or down, some grab handles are apparent so that anyone going up or down can have a safe grip. Looking at the steep bare bulkhead in my Omega 42, it becomes clear what a task this really is.

Boat entryway ladder: Scratch built?

First of all: We don´t have to invent the wheel over and over again. So I was doing a bot of research if there are steps for boat companionways available. That was because I didn´t wanted to come up with completely scratch built steps, which according to my restricted budget would certainly have been ungraceful and unsophisticated … well, planks. And I found some: The steps of Bavaria Yachts. You can buy them right away. And I did.

The steps, five of them, arrived a couple of days later. You may have read my article about the great finishing and heavy material quality of Bavaria Yachts especially when it comes to the joinery, and here´s another proof of that. The steps are made of massive wonderfully form-fit glued white Oak with some milled anti-skid rills. I really like those!

A simple yet beautiful solution for the Omega 42

One half of the thing is set, but how should the entryway ladder be looking like? Above you have seen how they realized this on hull #001 WINDFAENGER . This is a solution I don´t want to have for some reasons. First, in this version the ladder has only two steps and is sitting on top of an extra cupboard. This may provide for some additional stowage but I´d like to keep ALPHA as open and lofty as possible. Secondly, my most beloved boatbuilding brand Oyster funnily published a nice concept of their new entryway ladder, which I really liked:

omega 42 yacht

It´s basically a single chrome plated steel spine onto which the steps are fitted. The spine is nice and wide, making the steps “float” in the air. Apart from the fact that underneath the stairs Oyster did fit some stowage too, I really loved this idea. Heiner, boss of Mueritz Bootsservice, the shipyard that builds the Omega evo, nodded and agreed: It´s an elegant, modern yet very “discreet” solution. Nevertheless, for guaranteeing a dead-certain stability when using the ladder (and also for heavier people standing on the edges of the steps when heeling), he slightly changed the single central-spine concept a bit …

omega 42 yacht

We produce a quick sketch. The idea is to use double VA4-tubes to either side of the steps. This is made so that each step will have four mounting attachments to sit firmly in between. As Heiner puts it, the forces will be met much better when taken out of the steps to the ends rather than have a central spine and pivoting forces when somebody stands at the outside of the steps. Another nice effect: Those tubes simultaneously function as a handrail for a safe grip. Elegant, easy and simple.

omega 42 yacht

Naturally, we will have a much steeper angle than in modern production boats. This is due to the interior layout of the boat. The ladder cannot be taken too far into the boat (to lower the steepness) because it would block the entry into the bathroom and the transit into the galley/pilot´s berth. By this, we safe a lot of volume inside, I´m perfectly fine with a steeper ladder. Later, at home, I make a more elaborate sketch (yeah, it´s a bit clumsy, but more in detail) to think about this idea:

omega 42 yacht

I guess I like it. Although, Oyster has the best solution … but hey, this isn´t an Oyster. Back aboard, I kneel down and check how the steps could be arranged. Yepp, it for sure will be a steep entryway, but my kids are used to boats and simply love climbing, guests aboard will have to accommodate. In the end, the Omega 42 is a boat from the Seventies, boats were made to sail these days …

Creating additional stowage?

But one thing began gnawing in my mind: The space underneath the entryway ladder is indeed a wasted. I mean, I certainly don´t want a heavy cabinet there but it is too much of a tempting location for stuff. Maybe one of two shelves would be cool there? To put away al the little things you need up on deck but also want them stored away: Like the binoculars , sailing gloves, sunscreen, sunglasses ? Also, this might be a great place for safety equipment like the fire extinguisher and such. Certainly, this is something I will think about soon.

omega 42 yacht

For the time being I am really happy to having (almost) solved this big question and I am excited to see how Heiner and his crew will turn these sketches into reality. We discussed the next open details, like the material of the countertop, mini nav-station and salon dinner table and the deck hatches and windows, which will be the upcoming production steps. But this is another article. For now, I am happy that in my Omega 42 some very nice German Oak steps will make sure that transiting up and down is safe – and in style.
