We are hoping that the administration can rectify this issue soon, but unfortunately at this time we can make no promises as to when... we have been working on letting the higher powers that be 'know of the situation... hang in there iboaters, we've been through a lot over the years and this is just another rough weather system rolling through to endure is all. Re: Seidelmann 37 Sloop Research don't know anything about a 37 footer, but if it is anything like the 24 and 33 that i have had the pleasure of sailing on, it is one fast and fun boat. check the phrf ratings on it and you will find it to be quite spirited.

Review of Seidelmann 37

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The Seidelmann 37 has been built with different keel alternatives.

One option is a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel.

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 1.80 - 1.90 meter (5.91 - 6.21 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Another option is a fin keel.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.49 - 1.59 meter (4.89 - 5.19 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Seidelmann 37 can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.22 - 1.32 meter (4.00 - 4.30 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Yanmar diesel engine at 22 hp (16 kW).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.3 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Seidelmann 37 is about 220 kg/cm, alternatively 1234 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 220 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1234 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 37m 2 (398 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Hunter Legend 37

  • By Gregg Nestor
  • Updated: June 14, 2011

seidelmann 37 sailboat review

Warren Luhrs founded Hunter Marine Corporation in 1972. The company’s first offering was the Hunter 25, designed by Bob Seidelmann, a sailmaker and accomplished racing sailor. This was followed by a series of cruisers designed by John E. Cherubini, of Cherubini Yachts fame. As the company grew, an in-house team became responsible for all sailboat designs, including the Legend 37, which was built from 1986 to 1988. Today, Hunter boats are known for their Bergstrom & Ridder rigs, traveler arches, Euro styling, and low cost. The 37 is a design that falls somewhere in between.

The overall design of the Legend 37, with the flat sheer visually connecting the sharp, aggressive bow to the reverse transom, gives it the appearance of a high-performance boat. To offset generous freeboard, the coachroof is kept low and slopes forward, where it dissolves into the foredeck, somewhat after the style of the spartan deck design pioneered by Nautor’s Swan.

Like all Hunters, the 37 is a production boat built to a price point accessible to the company’s target market. Older models will have the expected maintenance issues that are common to boats of this era and cost.

Hunter built the Legend 37 with a solid-fiberglass hull, a balsa-cored deck, and molded interior liners that also incorporated structural components. A beefy transverse stiffener divides the main-saloon sole, and stringers run longitudinally on each side of the keel in the boat’s midsection.

The Legend 37’s interior is designed to comfortably accommodate a crew of four. In the forward cabin there’s a generous V-berth, a hanging locker, and a convenient vanity with sink. Immediately aft of it, and well forward of the boat’s midsection, is the main saloon, with its centerline drop-leaf table and near circular seating.

Aft, offering a combination of standing and stooping headroom, the spacious owner’s stateroom features a pedestal double berth and his-and-hers hanging locker/bureaus. It can be entered via the galley or the head.

Under the waterline, the Legend 37 has a balanced spade rudder and either a deep fin or a shoal-draft bulb/wing keel. Aloft, the fractional rig incorporates double swept-back airfoil spreaders and a split backstay. While the jib is small, the main is reasonably large and should be able to handle some heavy air without creating significant weather helm. The SA/D ratio of 18.6 suggests that the Legend 37 performs well in light air.

According to Ted Ambers, the owner of our review boat, the Legend 37’s best point of sail is a close reach; its worst, he says, is closehauled. For auxiliary power, the Legend 37 has a 34-horsepower Yanmar 3HM35F diesel. Coupled to a 16×10 two-bladed propeller, it easily moves the boat at hull speed. Delamination of the balsa-cored deck due to water saturation appears to be a common problem, but it can be detected by judicious sounding of the deck in conjunction with the use of a moisture meter.

The Legend 37 is a contemporary-styled performance sailer with a spacious interior that can make good on a family’s cruising ambitions. If you’re looking for one today, you can expect to find asking prices that range from $45,000 to approximately $65,000, depending on the boat’s condition.

Seidelmann 37

The seidelmann 37 is a 36.83ft masthead sloop designed by bob seidelmann and built in fiberglass by seidelmann yachts since 1980..

The Seidelmann 37 is a moderate weight sailboat which is a good performer. It is very stable / stiff and has a low righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a coastal cruiser. The fuel capacity is originally very small. There is a short water supply range.

My wife and I bought a 1985 Seidelmann sloop 34ft, hull #35, that we think is very solid and it looks and sails great. We bought it right and have spent a lot of $$ over the last year cleaning, repairing and updating her. I have noticed that Seidelmanns are few and far between and haven''t held their value. Can anyone give me insight on the manufacturer, on seaworthyness, and the value issue. I''d be especially interested in hearing from Jeff_H ([email protected]). I read your info on US Yachts and was impressed with your depth of knowledge. Where you appear to be in the Maryland area and Seidelmann built in Berlin, NJ, hopefully you have some insight. Will

seidelmann 37 sailboat review

If I remember corectly Seidelmann was a New Jersey sail maker. In the 1970''s he produced an interesting little 25 footer. They were clearly designed as race boats and did acceptably well on the race course because they were intended as rule beaters. These early boats were reasonably well built but by any objective standard were tender and especially well rounded. Seidelmann expanded their line fairly quickly and with this growth the design and build quality really seemed to go down hill. Seidelmanns quickly developed a very poor reputation. The later boats that I have been around were clearly very poorly put together. That said, if you have had your boat surveyed and it was found to be in solid condition, and you are pleased with the way the boat looks and sails then that is what counts. I would avoid putting too much into the boat as their reputation would tend to limit resale prices even if the boat was in premium condition. I am sorry that I don''t have better news. Respectfully Jeff

Correction: The Seidelmann 25 "by any objective standard were tender and NOT especially well rounded." Jeff

Thanks Jeff Sounds like we found one of the better ones. Will

Just found this topic today and have also sought out Seidelmann information. I recently purchased a 1978 Seidelmann 25 after almost 3 years of searching. The majority of reviewers aren''t as kind or objective as Jeff H. is, but I haven''t seen anything yet that would have prevented me from buying mine. It''s solid across the entire deck and sails very well once the wind picks up and she hardens some. Mine is definitely a project boat, and perhaps she''ll never be considered a ''jewel'', but as Jeff said, if you like the way she looks and sails (and I do), then that''s what matters. I''ve looked for clubs or forums that pertain to Seidelmann''s, but have had limited success. Please consider emailing me with your thoughts and ideas regarding any modifcations or remodeling you''ve done to your Seidelmann. So far, I''ve had a couple responses to emails I''ve sent to current owners Thanks. BallastBoy "RoadWarrior"

Ballastboy, you might want to check your messages in the Message Center at the left.

I acquired a ''82 Seidelmann 25 w/o spars, retro fitted her as a fractional rig witha mast 2 '' shorter and the boom 2'' off coach roof instead of 4'' that gave same main sail size; have 130 genoa on roller = lost about 60 sq ft of high aspect as result that on light days may have been nice to have or in a race on such a day. She really more 1/4 ton design with deck beam at 9.5 and waterline beam at 7,lwl is increased and lends a bit; however having the wider deck beam helps as location for counter-balance. I like this boat for her elegant lines and handling, points high - sail her year round in NJ, race to include ocean appearance. Jace

Edson pedestal? Check the cables are all still running where they should be... Might have jumped a sheave. Any play in the rudder blade when wobbled?

Wish I knew the sizes and also how many bearings there are on the S37.

Seidelman Rudder blue water, I sent you a message earlier, and trying to remember more. There are two bearings on the rudder post. The upper one is also what holds the assembly up. It has a flange on top, and the quadrant rides on this flange to support the entire assembly. When I did mine, had to replace the shaft, which as I said earlier, was either 2 or 2 & 1/4 inch, Please excuse my poor memory. On my boat it was impossible to get the quadrant off the shaft. After two days of heat and a 1/2 inch impact to no avail, I cut the floor out of the cockpit and took the post and quadrant out the top. But my rudder was damaged and the post bent, so it all had to come out. There are 5 bolts holding the quadrant to the shaft. Two pinch bolts on each side, and one through the center and through the post. I would still look at the mounting plate under the pedestal first. Mine was pretty far gone. Water seeps through the pedestal mounting bolts and apparently basically sits on that plate. I will look for pics and send you what I can find. Good luck with the repair.

Zoomtoob said: here's a thought. the grinding noise is hard to specifically locate but... try an automotive mechanics stethoscope. I use this for all kinds of things. try it applied to the rudder post, pedestal base, any sheaves you can reach, anything you can access while someone operates the steering. That might prevent you running down the wrong rabbit hole, so to speak. Click to expand

I think If my memory hasn't failed me, I believe that flange the quadrant rides on, is also the upper bearing. The bearing has a lip on it which is the flange. It seems possible that you could change that bearing without removing the rudder, IF you could figure out some way to keep the rudder from dropping. I don't remember there being any kind of stuffing box or seal in there, as the top of that assembly is above the water line. This would explain the water coming in when the boat moves around. And a worn bearing would certainly let more water pass and enter the boat. If you could rig some kind of sling under the rudder to hold it up, you could probably manage to change this top bearing pretty easily, if you can remove the quadrant. If the bottom one is bad, then an entirely different story.

Lower rudder bearing. I found a pic of the lower rudder bearing after some looking. Sorry for the delay, but have been in Dallas visiting with family. Here is the only bearing pic I have. Hopefully this will help.

Good Luck Hope things work out for you. I am thinking that the noise has to be from the upper bearing. It sounds more to me like it has dropped down, as opposed to a side load. The upper bearing is above the water line, but you will have to either pull the boat, or support the rudder when you remove the quadrant. Should not be a major problem to rig a sling of some kind under the rudder and use the jib winches to keep it up in place.

seidelmann 37 sailboat review

Captjim1 37 Seidelmann I have a 1980 S37 and I installed a rudder with a 3 1/2" dia. I had this installed back in 1990 it has been working better than the old one. I have put 9000 NM without any rudder problems. I did have problems when the Helm Wheel chain slipped off of the gear. This happened during teaching a newby how to steer a 37' sailboat Risque'. Never allow someone to turn the wheel hard so the chain jumps off the helm steering shaft.

  1. Seidelmann 37 Strengths?

    1. Seidelmann 37 Deale, MD. Jun 24, 2010. #9. Fast and reliable. We've had our S37 for over a year now at it has proved a great sail. I wouldn't say the engine is underpowered because it is a light boat, 13,900 displacemnet. We live aboard so we have alot of junk and have a 24hp Yanmar and it still gets up to 8 knots.

  2. seidelmann 37 review and seaworthy

I'm not sure about the 34 or 37 but the 30 was VERY beamly. An unusual looking boat, very wide in the middle, narrow at the ends. I was told back then that as a result of the unusual shape the boat was extremely tender. It makes sense, most of the boat is above the waterline. I was told that in rough weather or offshore the boat would be on it ...

Robert Williams. Dec 22, 2005. #2. Seidelmann in the Caribbean. I've been cruising in a S37 "IWI" for the last 8 years, down the east coast of the States and Bahamas for a year and 7 years in the Caribbean. I would certainly recommend an S37 for long term cruising in these kind of waters. I have made a few modifications that may be of interest ...

The l/b ratio for Seidelmann 37 is 3.08. Slim Wide 66% 0 50 100. Compared with other similar sailboats it is more spacy than 66% of all other designs. It seems that the designer has chosen a slightly more spacy hull design.

They were clearly designed as race boats and did acceptably well on the race course because they were intended as rule beaters.
