Seidelmann YachtsMy wife and I bought a 1985 Seidelmann sloop 34ft, hull #35, that we think is very solid and it looks and sails great. We bought it right and have spent a lot of $$ over the last year cleaning, repairing and updating her. I have noticed that Seidelmanns are few and far between and haven''t held their value. Can anyone give me insight on the manufacturer, on seaworthyness, and the value issue. I''d be especially interested in hearing from Jeff_H ([email protected]). I read your info on US Yachts and was impressed with your depth of knowledge. Where you appear to be in the Maryland area and Seidelmann built in Berlin, NJ, hopefully you have some insight. Will If I remember corectly Seidelmann was a New Jersey sail maker. In the 1970''s he produced an interesting little 25 footer. They were clearly designed as race boats and did acceptably well on the race course because they were intended as rule beaters. These early boats were reasonably well built but by any objective standard were tender and especially well rounded. Seidelmann expanded their line fairly quickly and with this growth the design and build quality really seemed to go down hill. Seidelmanns quickly developed a very poor reputation. The later boats that I have been around were clearly very poorly put together. That said, if you have had your boat surveyed and it was found to be in solid condition, and you are pleased with the way the boat looks and sails then that is what counts. I would avoid putting too much into the boat as their reputation would tend to limit resale prices even if the boat was in premium condition. I am sorry that I don''t have better news. Respectfully Jeff Correction: The Seidelmann 25 "by any objective standard were tender and NOT especially well rounded." Jeff Thanks Jeff Sounds like we found one of the better ones. Will Just found this topic today and have also sought out Seidelmann information. I recently purchased a 1978 Seidelmann 25 after almost 3 years of searching. The majority of reviewers aren''t as kind or objective as Jeff H. is, but I haven''t seen anything yet that would have prevented me from buying mine. It''s solid across the entire deck and sails very well once the wind picks up and she hardens some. Mine is definitely a project boat, and perhaps she''ll never be considered a ''jewel'', but as Jeff said, if you like the way she looks and sails (and I do), then that''s what matters. I''ve looked for clubs or forums that pertain to Seidelmann''s, but have had limited success. Please consider emailing me with your thoughts and ideas regarding any modifcations or remodeling you''ve done to your Seidelmann. So far, I''ve had a couple responses to emails I''ve sent to current owners Thanks. BallastBoy "RoadWarrior" Ballastboy, you might want to check your messages in the Message Center at the left. I acquired a ''82 Seidelmann 25 w/o spars, retro fitted her as a fractional rig witha mast 2 '' shorter and the boom 2'' off coach roof instead of 4'' that gave same main sail size; have 130 genoa on roller = lost about 60 sq ft of high aspect as result that on light days may have been nice to have or in a race on such a day. She really more 1/4 ton design with deck beam at 9.5 and waterline beam at 7,lwl is increased and lends a bit; however having the wider deck beam helps as location for counter-balance. I like this boat for her elegant lines and handling, points high - sail her year round in NJ, race to include ocean appearance. Click to expand Wish I knew the sizes and also how many bearings there are on the S37. Seidelman Rudder blue water, I sent you a message earlier, and trying to remember more. There are two bearings on the rudder post. The upper one is also what holds the assembly up. It has a flange on top, and the quadrant rides on this flange to support the entire assembly. When I did mine, had to replace the shaft, which as I said earlier, was either 2 or 2 & 1/4 inch, Please excuse my poor memory. On my boat it was impossible to get the quadrant off the shaft. After two days of heat and a 1/2 inch impact to no avail, I cut the floor out of the cockpit and took the post and quadrant out the top. But my rudder was damaged and the post bent, so it all had to come out. There are 5 bolts holding the quadrant to the shaft. Two pinch bolts on each side, and one through the center and through the post. I would still look at the mounting plate under the pedestal first. Mine was pretty far gone. Water seeps through the pedestal mounting bolts and apparently basically sits on that plate. I will look for pics and send you what I can find. Good luck with the repair. Zoomtoob said: here's a thought. the grinding noise is hard to specifically locate but... try an automotive mechanics stethoscope. I use this for all kinds of things. try it applied to the rudder post, pedestal base, any sheaves you can reach, anything you can access while someone operates the steering. That might prevent you running down the wrong rabbit hole, so to speak. Click to expand sailaway78 said: blue water, I sent you a message earlier, and trying to remember more. Click to expand I think If my memory hasn't failed me, I believe that flange the quadrant rides on, is also the upper bearing. The bearing has a lip on it which is the flange. It seems possible that you could change that bearing without removing the rudder, IF you could figure out some way to keep the rudder from dropping. I don't remember there being any kind of stuffing box or seal in there, as the top of that assembly is above the water line. This would explain the water coming in when the boat moves around. And a worn bearing would certainly let more water pass and enter the boat. If you could rig some kind of sling under the rudder to hold it up, you could probably manage to change this top bearing pretty easily, if you can remove the quadrant. If the bottom one is bad, then an entirely different story. sailaway78 said: If my memory hasn't failed me, I believe that flange the quadrant rides on, is also the upper bearing. It sounds more to me like it has dropped down, as opposed to a side load. The upper bearing is above the water line, but you will have to either pull the boat, or support the rudder when you remove the quadrant. Should not be a major problem to rig a sling of some kind under the rudder and use the jib winches to keep it up in place. sailaway78 said: Hope things work out for you. 1. Seidelmann 37 Deale, MD. Jun 24, 2010. #9. Fast and reliable. We've had our S37 for over a year now at it has proved a great sail. I wouldn't say the engine is underpowered because it is a light boat, 13,900 displacemnet. We live aboard so we have alot of junk and have a 24hp Yanmar and it still gets up to 8 knots.
I'm not sure about the 34 or 37 but the 30 was VERY beamly. An unusual looking boat, very wide in the middle, narrow at the ends. I was told back then that as a result of the unusual shape the boat was extremely tender. It makes sense, most of the boat is above the waterline. I was told that in rough weather or offshore the boat would be on it ...
It takes into consideration "reported" sail area, displacement and length at waterline. The higher the number the faster speed prediction for the boat. A cat with a number 0.6 is likely to sail 6kts in 10kts wind, a cat with a number of 0.7 is likely to sail at 7kts in 10kts wind. KSP = (Lwl*SA÷D)^0.5*0.5
Robert Williams. Dec 22, 2005. #2. Seidelmann in the Caribbean. I've been cruising in a S37 "IWI" for the last 8 years, down the east coast of the States and Bahamas for a year and 7 years in the Caribbean. I would certainly recommend an S37 for long term cruising in these kind of waters. I have made a few modifications that may be of interest ...

1. - - Chicago Il. Mar 17, 2007. #1. We are thinking about purchasing a 37' seidelmann we had a 31' pearson, I know they are different qualities of boats but we are on Lake Michigan and are just moving up in size until we go full time cruising in 10 years. What is your opinion of the seidelmann sailboat we cruise all over Lake Michigan.
The Seidelmann 37 is a 36.83ft masthead sloop designed by Bob Seidelmann and built in fiberglass by Seidelmann Yachts since 1980. The Seidelmann 37 is a moderate weight sailboat which is a good performer. It is very stable / stiff and has a low righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a coastal cruiser.
