Historical:

XARIFA 1927 has a long and interesting history full of racing, luxury, public service, scientific research and as in all original historic vessels, plenty of intrigue. Her first owner was Franklin Morse Singer, one of the many sons of the multimillionaire king of the sewing machine, Isaac Singer, and a well- known American yachtsman. Franklin Singer’s mother Isabella Eugeny Boye, French, was taken as model by the sculptor Frederic Bartholdi for the Liberty Statue stepped in New York harbour in 1866.

As Mr. Singer did with all his previous yachts, he named her Xarifa, an Arabic word which means ‘noble’, ‘honest’.

In 1930, he ordered his new next yacht and sold the Xarifa to the British businessman and newspapers magnate Edward Mauger (who was given the title of Baron Iliffe in 1933). Mr Mauger renamed her as Radiant. During this period, the yacht was raced actively and hosted important private social events on board.

In 1934, she was bought by Camper & Nicholson.

In 1936 the ship was sold to the Baron Louis Empain, the youngest son of Baron Edward Empain, a wealthy engineer, entrepreneur, financier and industrialist from Belgium, who gave her a new name, Oiseau Blanc. Under this ownership, she crossed many times the Atlantic Ocean, sailed the St. Lorenzo River and took several cruises in Europe and in America.

It has been published in many articles that around 1938 the yacht was sold again to Georgette Malou, who called her Georgette. However, since November 23rd 1936 until 1939, there are no records of the boat. In 1939, Professor and Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison, from the American History Department of Harvard, acquired her. As per the papers of Professor Morison, kept in the archives of Harvard University, in mid-1939, he and other benefactors “purchased a derelict three-masted schooner yacht, which we renamed Capitana and rerigged as a barquentine”. Professor and Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison re-baptized her as Capitana, in honor of Columbus´s Flagship. For a long time Prof. Morison was interested in Columbus´s voyages to America.

As published by the magazine Traffic World in June 8th 1940, the yacht changed hands once again and was bought by Clementino Benoliel De Carvalho, the son of Antonio Miguel de Carvalho, owner of the company Antonio Miguel de Carvalho et Cie. from Cape Verde. The boat was registered for trade use between New Bedford and Cape Verde in what was known as the Brava Packet Trade routes.

In April 1941 Capitana was acquired by an Icelandic merchant called Magnus Andersson in New Bedford, who took her to Reykjavik to be used for fish transportation between Iceland and Europe.

He later sold the vessel in 1947 to the Danish owner Tuxen and Hagemann, converting her into a fishing vessel, while preserving her name.

Negotiations were made by Hjamal Olsen, a Danish yacht broker.

It is thought that Hjamal Olsen navigated and was in charge of some of the “sikre ruter” (secure routes). After the meeting at the Hôtel Angleterre in 1944 between German Officers and members of the Danish resistance, where a secret collaboration was agreed (the resistance transported German goods through the “sikre ruters” between Denmark and neutral Sweden and they received weapons), Hjamal Olsen navigated these “sikre ruters” with a boat called “Capitano”.

In 1951 the famous Austrian Scientist and voyager Hans Hass (some refer to him as the Austrian Cousteau) bought the yacht. He initially renamed her Manta, in honor to one of the principle actors of his acclaimed film Under the Red Sea, released on October 2, 1952 and which was awarded first prize at the Venice Film Festival, as well as winning other major awards. However, he soon gave her back her original name, Xarifa. The yacht took many voyages around the world, especially through the Pacific and Indian oceans, thus becoming famous for Hans Hass’ oceanographic and scientific researches. By way of the International Institute for Marine Research, this new research ship was mostly financed through the proceeds of Hass´s film Under the Red Sea, and then by way of photo safaris in the Red Sea and by the BBC.

In 1960 she was purchased in Singapore by Italian multimillionaire Carlo Traglio. Under his ownership, she went through a refit in Italy and was then taken to her new home port, the Tee-Pier in Port Hercule, Monaco, where she remained berthed until 2012.

Finally, she was bought in 2012 by her current owner. A new full refit and her outstanding original architecture, made it possible for the Xarifa to recover all her strength and magnificence.

Since 2014, she has participated in several regattas, displaying once again her splendour and elegance: Cannes Régates Royales, Les Voiles de St Tropez, Argentario Sailing Week, Copa del Rey – Mahón, Regata Puig Barcelona, Monaco Classic Week, Panerai Transat Classique 2019.

The 50m classic sailing yacht XARIFA (ex Radiant, Oiseau Blanc, Capitania, Georgette) is a beautiful 1927 schooner designed by engineer J.M. Soper and constructed by J. Samuel White & Co. Ltd. in Cowes, UK. She was refitted numerous times over the years, with the most recent refit in 2014 at the Metalships & Docks Shipyards located in Spain.

NOTABLE FEATURES: ~Vast deck ~Lovely sunbathing area ~Modern entertainment equipment ~Individual Air Conditioning controls

XARIFA represents a three-masted schooner, featuring a sail area of up to 1,386 square metres, with sails made by North Sails. They were produced in a cream colour to complement her classic look. She is also equipped with Lewmar hydraulic power system, able to reach 140kg/square centimetre to activate and run the bronze winches, which can achieve a pulling capacity of 7,000 kg, while being perfectly integrated in the Burmese teak wood deck. The Harken furling system, model Unit 5 and Unit 6, is made of aluminium for lighter and easier use.

Xarifa has been created to take advantage of all the spaces found aboard. Her layout and furniture are arranged in a way to maintain the yachts classical personality while featuring modern entertainment equipment.

For relaxation and pleasant socialising there is a U-shaped sofa near the bridge and at the stern there is a comfortable sunbathing area. The engine room casing has been lowered and covered with teak wood which has created a new area with sun loungers for guests to relax.

XARIFA has a professional galley on board, offering top quality appliances, as well as a 2,5 m3 cold room and a wine cellar.

The main engine, a Caterpillar 3406 with a power of 400 BHP, has been preserved and is capable of reaching 9 knots speed. The engine was fully repaired by the Official Technical Service and sensors have been installed in order to monitor it from the control board of the schooner.

By Editorial Team   4 February 2015

The recently refitted 50m 3-masted schooner XARIFA is the most recent addition to the global charter fleet, and will offer luxury charters across the West Mediterranean .

A classic yacht boasting an epic history, sailing yacht XARIFA was originally delivered in 1927 by J.S. White & Co, with naval architecture by J.M. Soper. She had successful spells cruising the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific, Indian Ocean and throughout Europe and America, used as both a pleasure and research vessel. Once the host to key diplomatic international meetings in the 1970s and James Bond himself, XARIFA now is available to charter for the first time.

Recently restored to the status that saw her rise to fame as one of the most elegant yachts of her time, the final works of her refit were completed in late August last year before she completed her maiden voyage in Cannes . An engineering overhaul and extensive exterior and interior work now means she perfectly blends the inimitable classic style with latest features found on modern sailing yachts.

Her interior offers the best of new and old, with classic artworks, wooden cabinetry and ample comfy seating creating a stylish retreat from everyday life. S/Y XARIFA will comfortably accommodate up to 12 guests in five traditionally-styled staterooms on charter vacations, comprising of a master suite, a double stateroom and three twin cabins.

Her range of water toys include a 3-person inflatable kayak, two sets of state-of-the-art scuba diving gear and 2 folding bikes – which are ideal for exploration ashore.

For more details about experienced the newly-restored classic yacht XARIFA first-hand on a luxury yacht charter, contact your preferred  charter broker . Alternatively, feel free to browse all luxury yachts available for charter in the French Riviera  to compare vessels which cruise here.

Owner's declaration: ONLY PRIVATE USE.

Ι am a Spanish national and I have purchased the said yacht in question οn 9.6.2016. After her purchase, the yacht was classified for private use (recreational craft) and was registered in the ship registry of Malta under the new owner (private person). The yacht’s relevant certificate of registry was issued by Maltese Registry of Ships οn 10.06.2016 as well. Pursuant to the European legislation, the recreational craft (yacht), for which the VAT has been duly paid in any member state of the European Union, is able to freely sail within the maritime borders of European Union.

It is noted that, at the time of purchase of the yacht in question, I became aware of the fact that she was classified as professional. I have that time sent an e-mail dated 10.01.2017 to the former chartering agents of the yacht, namely Fraser Yachts and others, informing that said yacht should not be included in the chartering catalogues of the following year 2017-2018, because its professional permit has terminated, owing to its classification only for private use.

Besides, I never had any relation with yachts’ chartering. Considering my explicit mandate dated as from 10.01.2017 to the former agents,), I was convinced and took it for granted that the aforementioned agents would have complied with the mandate and that they would have deleted the advertisement from the internet websites.

Exiled russian oligarch’s 257’ superyacht amaryllis seen towed through palm beach.

The Amaryllis being towed past the former mansion of Henry Flagler, built in 1902

By John Jannarone and Alan Hatfield

The 257’ superyacht Amaryllis apparently owned by exiled Russian oligarch Andrey Borodin was towed past Palm Beach, FL on Friday morning, according to a visual account by CorpGov .

The yacht, whose owner is frequently cited as Mr. Borodin by enthusiast publications, moved slowly through the Lake Worth lagoon where bridges were raised for its passage. A towboat with flashing lights about 150 feet ahead pulled the Amaryllis , built by German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen in 2011.

While CorpGov could not officially confirm Mr. Borodin as the owner of the vessel, his wife, socialite Tatiana Korsakova, has posted dozens of Instagram photos and videos aboard the Amaryllis. A yacht broker interviewed by CorpGov confirmed that Ms. Korsakova is indeed aboard the Amaryllis in the photos and videos.

The sighting comes as billions of dollars in Russian-owned yachts have been seized around the world as a result of international sanctions. CNN has published an extensive list of seized vessels, which were taken in harbor cities including Mallorca, Spain and London.

However, it is unclear if the Amaryllis was being seized or voluntarily towed. Very large yachts often choose to be towed because bridges are required to raise for them, according to the yacht broker.

The former Bank of Moscow chief was granted political asylum in the UK in February 2013 after fleeing what he alleged to be politically-motivated fraud and embezzlement charges. Mr. Borodin would go on to be tried and convicted in abstentia in Russian Court in 2018, but not before managing to enlist a number of prominent American lawmakers to lobby Washington for a U.S. visa. Despite Russian extradition requests to the UK government, Borodin’s controversial attempts to make large donations to the NHS, and the uncovering of an assassination plot against his life, the fugitive banker remains overseas, having been granted access to his Swiss bank accounts and having made several notable London real estate purchases during his time in exile.

Mr. Borodin is widely listed as a billionaire, but his total wealth remains difficult to confirm accurately, with the governments of Switzerland and the Bahamas having been asked to help the Russian government in its legal case. In 2012, Borodin purchased the UK’s then-most expensive home, an 80-hectare 18th-century estate in Oxfordshire, for upwards of $217 million. In 2017 he was granted access to personal Swiss accounts holding a reported $378 million. The Amaryllis was purchased for a reported $120 million.

Mr. Borodin did not immediately respond to an emailed query from CorpGov , while the FBI declined to comment. An emailed query to The Department of Homeland Security was not returned.
