Classic Explorer 60

60 foot super yacht

Virtual Tour

The circumnavigator.

The Selene Classic Explorer 60 is a design from an entirely new mold with the Selene Deep Hull™ structure resulting in a raised sheer and a significantly higher deck which generates increased headroom in the cabins and the engine room. The Selene 60 is a perfect transitional yacht between the successful Selene 53/54 and Selene 62/66 series. She features a full-height engine room, a separate crew’s quarters aft with a transom door.

An expansive and functional flybridge layout incorporates a 10-person U-shaped sofa with a built-in BBQ, sink and refrigerator. One of the unique selling points of the Selene 60 is its full-height commissary, or utility room, that is placed between the owner’s cabin and the engine room for storage, freezer, washer/dryer and access to the electrical compartment.

2,500 nm range at 8 knots in luxury

This commissary is an even better isolator of the engine room noise into the master cabin! Behind the « walk through » engine room you find the lazarette, which is so spacious that you can easily store your tools, spare parts and diving equipment. This roomy lazarette also offers the possibility of building a crew-cabin with head. The standard settee molded into the cockpit creates a gracious space for relaxation under way or at the dock.

The European transom with inset swim platform puts the Selene 60 into the mini mega-yacht class. The FRP hardtop enhances both the functionality and profile of this graceful yacht. The quality and beauty of the Selene 60 have been confirmed by many owners of Selene Trawlers who have described this yacht as « the best designed and most accomplished boat from Howard Chen’s drawing board! » Built to Lloyd’s Category A standards, the Selene 60 has the range, strength, and stability to cross oceans, yet with a moderate draft it is also at home in shallow tropical waters or for gunk-holing rivers and creeks. First deliveries of the Selene 60’s started in the fall of 2006 and since then, over thirty Selene 60 have been delivered…

Amel 60 review: This modern cruiser is a true benchmark for quality

Matthew Sheahan

  • Matthew Sheahan
  • March 12, 2020

The French yard has built 50+ years of knowledge into its new world cruising flagship the Amel 60, reports Matthew Sheahan

Product Overview

Manufacturer:, price as reviewed:.

I’m guessing that rival manufacturers of bluewater cruisers know when their prospective clients have been to Amel. They realise when their prospects come to them to discuss the detail, and they’ll be holding a long list of questions about what is included in the standard specification.

The list will be long. Very long. And if these potential customers then choose to reveal their budget based on this detailed list, the challenge for any of Amel’s rivals will be to suppress the inevitable sharp intake of breath when their sales staff hear the bottom line.

Amel has long held a reputation for producing high quality, long distance cruisers that come equipped with everything. It’s a reputation that’s well deserved.

Since launching their first boat, the Euros, back in 1966 the French builders were led by the company’s founder Henri Tonet, (better known as Henri Amel), with his seemingly simple objective – to create the best cruising yacht for a couple to sail to deliver “maximum pleasure for minimum effort.”

While other yards may lay claim to a similar goal, it has been Amel’s dogged determination to keep things simple that has contributed to the French company’s sustained success.

For starters, it has never produced more than two models at any one time. “In our firm, we don’t change models every year, but we keep perfecting the ones we make,” Henri is quoted as saying.

Amel 50 review: An indoor sailing experience to excite even hardened sailors

Amel has a long established following for yachts designed and built to match the needs of liveaboard and bluewater cruisers.…

But restricting its new launches to one a decade for the first 34 years was a strategy at odds with others in the business. Surely anyone looking to buy a boat they call home rather than a weekend plaything would want to express themselves and put their mark on it?

This is where Amel has been so clever because, while this is broadly true, the flip side of swapping life ashore for that of living the dream afloat is that many people are nervous about such a big step, no matter how boldly they started out.

To be shown a detailed standard specification where all the key thinking has been done goes a long way to calming any post-purchase, pre-delivery anxiety.

The new style Amel involves more than just good looks. Modern lines, a plumb bow and wide aft sections make for a powerful boat. Her jib leads on the coachroof are a subtle indication of the new focus on performance. Photo: Rick Tomlinson

As an example, the list of options for its latest and largest Amel doesn’t even make two pages of A4. For most, the decisions that are required will need so little debate that the entire boat could be specified over a lunchtime pint at the pub.

So, when it comes to writing a boat test for the new Amel 60, there’s a temptation to start with the long list of standard equipment and build a story around that. Yet to start there would be to do little justice to a new model that marks the second chapter in a big step forward for this company.

Let’s be honest. For all their attributes, Amels have rarely been the prettiest of boats nor, I would argue, the most contemporary. But the Amel 60 changes all that. This new Berret-Racoupeau design doesn’t just look modern, she is clearly on trend, starting with her hull shape.

The Amel 60 is a Berret-Racoupeau design. Photo: Rick Tomlinson

Plumb bows are all the rage, as are fixed bowsprits. So too are lines that open out into beamy, powerful sections aft that then benefit from twin rudders. And given that when these shapes are combined with the correct buoyancy distribution they can deliver a quicker hull form with few vices, it’s an obvious choice for cruising designs to adopt the secondary benefits that come with this fuller form.

Increased volume, both for the accommodation and the deck lockers, are among the key advantages. Twin rudders reduce drag when heeled and provide a more balanced, surefooted feel when under way, but they also provide a level of redundancy should one of them get damaged. Plus, for those who spend more time in areas like the Mediterranean, the shallower rudders help with mooring stern-to.

The Amel 60 has all of these advantages and, with its dark, rectangular hull portlights and tinted wraparound windscreen, it takes on the looks of the modern cruising generation.

amel-60-sailing-yacht-test-review-at-anchor-credit-Easyride

With a layout designed to be as versatile as possible, the Amel 60 can be operated by two, easily sleeps six and has the capacity for eight people in total

The smaller Amel 50 was the first to break the mould and set the new style when launched in 2017. A brave new look along with its quality of build and fit out was recognised straight away and it shot up the charts winning European Yacht of the Year in 2018. The company has since built just short of 50 boats. Apart from looks, one of the biggest departures from the original style was the move from ketch to sloop rig.

Previously, ketch rigs were incorporated to divide the sail plan into manageable chunks and make sail handling easier. Yet that was in an era where sail handling systems were not as efficient and reliable as they are today. Plus, with the modern trend for aft swept spreaders and full-width chainplate bases, taller rigs can be more secure and dispense with the need for running backstays.

Higher aspect ratio sail plans are more efficient as a result and are also easier to manage thanks to improvements in sail furling technology. Add twin independent fixed backstays into the equation and you have an extremely well supported mast.

In short, times have changed and Amel has responded. But the 60 takes the concept even further by making a bold statement with a carbon mast fitted as standard. Interestingly, it’s the sail plan that provides some of the bigger decisions when it comes to ticking boxes on the options list.

Among the key choices is the option to have a self-tacking cutter rig. The test boat had this and it worked well, particularly as the staysail has decent proportions and is mounted sufficiently far forward to make it a good sail on its own in a breeze. Unfortunately we didn’t have such conditions for the test, but even though a staysail adds just short of €20,000 to the bill, for me it’s an obvious box to tick.

Another is the option for a free-flying, furling Code 0, which will nudge the bill up by another €18,000. But again this is money well spent in my mind to provide an extra gear for light airs upwind sailing (which we did get to experience), along with better performance in stronger breezes downwind.

On the other hand I’d be less inclined to rush into opting for the furling gennaker. Fine if money isn’t an issue (this adds another €12,500), but the areas of sail development and handling systems are changing fast and improving with each iteration.

The move to sloop configuration has also freed up deck space as well and simplified the overall layout. The most obvious area is on the after deck which is now a wide, open space, perfect for sunbathing or stowing a dinghy on deck if you don’t want the optional davits.

Keeping the side decks clutter free has always been one of the key features of an Amel and nothing has changed aboard the 60, which has to be one of the easiest and most secure decks to move about on that you’ll find in this size and style. The solid rails running around the entire deck, higher than most conventional guardwires, are another common and popular feature of the marque.

amel-60-sailing-yacht-test-review-deck-detail-credit-Jerome-Ricoul

Solid deck rails add to the sense of security on board. Photo: Jérôme Ricoul

Security, both real and perceived, is an important feature of an Amel and nowhere is this more obvious than in the centre cockpit. This deep and largely enclosed area is more pilothouse than cockpit, albeit with a sliding solid sunroof that helps to open things up in the right conditions. Yet given how enclosed this area is, the all round visibility is generally very good.

When it comes to handling the boat alone under sail, it is pretty easy thanks to the well-sorted panel for the sail control systems. Indeed, although it is possible to wind everything by hand, you’d consider yourself pretty unlucky if you had to break out a winch handle.

But while I was impressed with the layout, comfort and security, a particular reservation I have with this configuration is the ability to drive electric sheet winches that are behind you. The ease with which you could activate a winch without seeing a hand placed on it or the accidental development of an override is worrying.

amel-60-sailing-yacht-test-review-cockpit-credit-Ilago

Amel has stuck to its offset, forward helm station from which the entire boat can be managed with guest seating behind. Photo: Ilago

The answer would seem to be to be diligent about never operating a winch without looking aft, but then this does raise issues about looking ahead too. Having said that, what did get my vote in this department was the mainsheet winch mounted to starboard of the companionway hatch and within easy reach of the helmsman.

A far smaller issue was the angular and rather sharp feel to the grab handles mounted in the guest area of the cockpit. Stylish perhaps, but not a great feel.

But a big plus, especially for those with plenty of sea miles and real world experience, is the engine room access. Lifting the cockpit floor with the help of the permanently fitted gas struts provides access to the business end of the boat in seconds. It is, quite simply, the best engine access you can imagine.

amel-60-sailing-yacht-test-review-engine-room-credit-rick-tomlinson

Engine access is the envy of the bluewater cruising world. Photo: Rick Tomlinson

And with such a large opening the engine room cools down quickly and provides plenty of light, air and space when you’re down there.

Comprehensive fit-out

When Isabelle Racoupeau set about creating the interior design for the Amel 60 she put a particular focus on lights and lighting that create, ‘warmth and refinement’ as well as a ‘chic, open and bright’ atmosphere. And from the minute you descend the companionway steps to enter the saloon you can’t miss what she’d set out to achieve.

Light streams into the accommodation and, aside from being very much on trend, the effect is a welcome one that is enhanced by the modern styling throughout the accommodation.

When it comes to the overall layout there’s nothing particularly surprising. The main saloon is amidships with the navigation station tucked away to port while the longitudinal galley is to starboard and the owner’s cabin set aft. Forward a pair of doubles is mirrored each side of the centreline, each with its own shower and heads.

All are finished beautifully in a choice of either light oak or walnut. Mahogany is no longer an option aboard Amel yachts. Style and layout are, as always, subjective, but what is not up for debate is the level of detail and the comprehensive fit-out.

The galley is the best example. Here, from the microwave to the induction hob, the washer-drier to the dishwasher and plenty more, all are fitted as standard. And when the layout has been so expertly installed it would seem rude not to tick the boxes for an icemaker, a wine cooler and a second deep freeze.

amel-60-sailing-yacht-test-review-galley-credit-rick-tomlinson

The comprehensively fitted out galley is set to port. Photo: Rick Tomlinson

Among the most expensive extras on a short list of options is the air-conditioning at €26,000, the heating system at €18,000 and the watermaker at €18,500. Given the variety of uses that owners may wish for their 60, it is easy to see why Amel has left these as options rather than adding them to the list of standard equipment.

Our light weather sea trials demonstrated how well the Amel 60 would slip along in light airs. In 6-7 knots true wind and flat water, we sat at 5.4 knots – impressive stuff for a 26 tonne boat. With its cutter configuration, the Amel sails well and is easy to manage while its electrically furled Code 0 is a doddle to operate.

Sadly we didn’t get to sail in a stronger breeze and bigger seas. Here, the key for me would be in whether it has the feel to make it a boat you would want to helm for the pleasure of it or whether the autopilot would go on.

amel-60-sailing-yacht-test-review-running-shot-credit-rick-tomlinson

I say this because I have reservations about the long steering cable runs to her twin rudders and, based on colleagues’ comments about the Amel 50, I would take a guess that finger light feel is not her strongest card.

While twin rudders provide some real benefits when the breeze is up and the pace is on aboard any yacht, another drawback comes when it’s time to manoeuvre at close quarters under power. The Amel 60 is no different, and the lack of propwalk makes it difficult to turn tightly in a small space.

Fortunately, the option to fit a retractable stern thruster in addition to the standard bow thruster changes this and makes her a nimble and manageable boat under engine. In many ways the yacht’s construction is the easiest part to describe and assess. Built as a solid laminate below the waterline and a PVC foam sandwich above it, the hull and deck are resin infused, a technique introduced with the Amel 50.

Where it remains the same as its predecessors is that this is a solidly built boat throughout, has Amel’s well known maintenance-free, teak effect decks and adheres to the best practices of bluewater boat building. The conclusion is clear: this is a genuine go-anywhere cruiser for two from a company with a pedigree and popularity to back up such claims and a price tag to make others draw breath.

For those familiar with Amel it will come as no surprise at all that the 60 is a comprehensively fitted out boat, well built and reassuringly easy to handle short-handed. For those who are not, and who are looking to buy a boat of this size and type, you really should put this on your list in order to check out where the true benchmark for value for money versus practical and solid engineering lies. And, if you can, go to the yard in La Rochelle and see the operation for yourself. There are few others like it in the world.

Oyster 565 A

Oyster style and performance

The oyster 565 is amongst the best 60 foot yachts for sale, built using the most robust marine design and technology available and specified well-beyond normal requirements, to withstand the toughest of environments..

The 57 foot hull of the 565 is designed, engineered and certified to meet Lloyd’s Register Certification and constructed using the highest quality materials. It features a reinforced, monolithic composite structure for superior strength, stiffness and weight-optimisation, with further reinforcement in the slam zones and keel area.

Incorporating the latest nautical and domestic technology, every element from the hull, winches, through to the generator and door hinges are specifically specified for performance, strength and longevity. The levels of finish and luxury are of the highest standards thanks to the skill of our designers and master craftspeople. Every detail of the Oyster 565, from the strength of the hull, down to the smallest fixing, has been considered for outstanding robustness and seaworthiness to give you complete confidence at sea.

Oyster’s DNA runs through the length and breadth of the 565’s sleek lines. Naval architect Rob Humphreys-designed twin rudder hull form creates a longer waterline, delivering meaningful power and balance.

Packed with features cascaded down from our larger yachts – from the signature triple Seascape windows to the optional superyacht inspired hydraulic bathing deck, the 565 is a true luxury 60 foot sailboat for sale. The instantly recognisable deck saloon offers the perfect place for guests to relax under sail or at anchor. Twin helm stations are centrally located aft of the cockpit and with concealed lines, together with flush fore and aft decks, moving around is safe and easy, while providing ample space for entertaining.

The Oyster 565 is a joy to sail shorthanded or with a crew.

Designed for fast cruising, this 60 foot sailing yacht has an impressive turn of speed. The standard push-button in-mast furling, with a fractional-rigged sail plan, make her easily manageable in any conditions.

Twin helm positions house the intuitive powered sailing controls and navigation equipment, with electric winches in easy reach. A fixed bowsprit accommodates a choice of asymmetric sails and the 105% overlapping headsail. Her wide-beam aft and twin rudders make her sure-footed and well-balanced in boisterous seas, yet light, direct and agile on the helm. On long passages, she ticks off the miles effortlessly and when arriving safely at your destination, her optional, powerful, retractable bow and stern thrusters make her simple to manoeuvre – spin her on her keel and slide into the tightest berths.

The exceptional volume below decks offers the opportunity to create stylish contemporary interiors that make a real home from home.

Oyster 565 Galley

Contemporary luxury and comfort

The interior of the oyster 565 offers an expansive sense of space not normally found on a 60 foot sailing yacht, thanks to the volume created by her generous beam..

Well-appointed throughout, the social spaces, galley and cabins are all well-proportioned, comfortable and luxurious, while being eminently practical. With materials, fixtures and fittings carefully considered, from the mood lighting system to the saloon table, optional day bed and intuitively positioned grab rails – everything is specified to the highest standard. Oyster’s attention to detail reveals itself in everything from the beautiful handcrafted cabinetry, hand-assembled wiring loom, to the rubber mounted wooden floors that eliminate floorboard creaks. With a choice of versatile cabin layouts, there is space for up to six guests and on extended ocean passages the versatile work room doubles as a cabin for an additional crew member.

Oysters are a platform for adventure, designed to take you anywhere in the world in luxury, comfort and safety.

Informed by decades of owner adventures, the Oyster 565, the best 60 foot sailboat, is a liveaboard yacht designed for long periods at sea. Every inch has been considered to provide a welcoming environment, extensive stowage and easy access for maintenance.

On deck, a convenient forward sail locker and a full width lazarette aft provide excellent stowage. Down below, the heavily cored hull creates a real sense of peace and calm, a safe haven in heavy weather. Home luxuries include full-sized appliances in the longitudinal galley, which is well designed and equipped for cooking at sea. The saloon is light and spacious, with excellent natural ventilation from the forward opening saloon windows and optional air conditioning. The generous cabins, quality, deep mattresses, island berths, mirrors, cedar lined wardrobes and en suites create living spaces that are relaxed and comfortable.

All new Oysters feature technology you would expect and the 565 is no exception.

Equipped with a variety of convenient and connected tech, living aboard is easier, more enjoyable and safer than ever before. From Infotainment systems, wireless sound and sophisticated mood lighting, through to optional internet, WIFI and enhanced navigation systems, the 565 delivers on technology we take for granted. The dedicated navigation station in the heart of the saloon is the technology hub, featuring a optional PC, lift-top desk; plotter; VHF radio; power management; generator control; switchboard; and plenty of power sockets. It doubles as the ideal work-aboard space and is home to the Oyster Command™ system – Oyster’s intuitive digital switching system which connects everything including entertainment, utilities, lighting and monitoring systems. It can also be accessed from the helm station and additional touchscreens can be fitted in cabins as an optional extra.

Average Yacht Prices | 40, 50, 60, 70, 100 feet + Helpful Examples

How much do yachts cost? Let’s look at yacht prices per size.

SELECT SIZE ⇩

Note: We will look at yachts that are a few years old. Very few people buy brand-new yachts as the price comes down a lot after only a few years.

How much is a small yacht? Let’s start at 40 feet length.

40 Foot Yacht Cost

A 40-foot yacht can be found used for around $200,000 and new models can cost as much as a million dollars. There are always lots of used yachts for sale around 40 feet in length, which makes them more attractive to first-time buyers.

Technically, a yacht begins at 23 feet. However, yachts that size will more often be referred to as boats.

A 40-foot yacht is a great option for looking for relative simplicity and plenty of comfort and capability. This size is great for day trips in the Caribbean dedicated to speed boating or simple cruising.

The size remains manageable, but the vessel can be updated with extra living spaces and amenities as desired, with a more affordable price than larger options.

The maintenance prices will remain lower as well.

Make sure you are considering the age of your yacht. Even if it is on the smaller end, it will be more expensive if it is new and custom-built to your wants.

Even if you think a 40-foot yacht is the cheapest option, these small factors make for a sliding price scale.

You might find that a smaller, new, custom yacht is more expensive than an older, simpler, larger yacht. One benefit of an older yacht is that it should have the improvements and equipment that make it comfortable to operate and will not have those additional costs.

For  sailboat prices specifically, check out this article .

Our Pick: Viking 42 Convertible: Cruise and Fish (2014)

Price: $895,000

60 foot super yacht

  • Cushioned seats
  • Underwater lights
  • Flybridge fiberglass hard-top
  • Recent engine and service
  • Joystick control
  • Cockpit shade with poles, freezer, and step-up box
  • Custom chairs
  • Coach roof overhang to provide shade
  • home theater setup
  • Freshwater wash area
  • Cockpit freezer and drink box
  • Forward-facing viewing windows in deckhouse

Here’s a great example of a yacht with differing ages and year models. It has twin diesel engines, 600 hp each, and cruise at 35 mph (pretty fast!).

Yacht Price Examples for Three Other 40-50 Foot

  • 42-foot Grand Banks 42 Classic; trawler-cruiser style yacht; twin diesel, 350 hp each, cruising speed is 13 mph. Price: $370,000 for 2004; $124,500 for 1986; older ones for less
  • 45-foot Sea Ray 450 Sundancer or Sedan Bridge; single or twin diesel, about 1,000 hp total; cruising speed about 26 mph Price: $472,000 for 2012 twin-engine
  • 41-foot Back Cove Downeast; single diesel 715 hp; cruising speed is 26 mph Price: $619,000 for 2016

50 Foot Yacht Cost

50-foot yachts are  normally owner-operated, so you wouldn’t need to pay for a crew. Now we are around the size of 2-bedroom yachts.

They can provide more living space giving the owner flexibility for more guests and making it a more permanent residential option. With more space comes the opportunity to install more amenities as well.

The biggest difference between the 40-foot vessel and the 50-foot is the accommodations.

Expect three-cabin layouts, which give plenty of space for rest. The opportunity to create guest rooms, owners’ suite, and entertainment spaces are better with these yachts.

Our Pick: Hatteras GT54 Convertible Sportfish

60 foot super yacht

The price for the 2017 model of this used yacht starts at $2,249,000.

This yacht is 53′ 10″ long and weighs 75,000 pounds! It has twin diesel engines, 1,300 hp each, cruising speed of 35 mph.

It has a 1200-gallon fuel capacity with three staterooms. It sleeps up to 6 people, so it is perfect for entertaining without being so large to the point where maintenance becomes very difficult. It is known for its great propulsion rates and is very smooth and agile.

It specializes as a fishing boat but allows plenty of room for guests. In addition to the three staterooms, it has a large salon deck, a spacious galley, and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating.

Yacht Price Examples for Two Other 50 Foot

  • 51-foot Azimut Magellano 50; express cruiser; twin diesel engines, 425 hp each, cruising speed 16 mph Price: $670,760 for 2013
  • 52-foot Carver C52 Command Bridge; twin diesel engines, 600 hp each; cruising speed 18- 26 mph Price: $1,149,000 for 2017; $1,750,00 for 2021 with bow thrusters, gyro-stabilizer

How much is a large yacht? Let’s  step up to 60 foot.

60 Foot Yacht Cost

Now we’re looking at 2-bedroom yacht prices. A yacht in this range approaches the upper end of the owner/operator criteria.

This means that owners need to decide whether they can handle this size yacht on their own or if they need to hire outside help from a crew.

If you’re thinking of buying a boat this size, the cost may not be an issue, but understand that adding crew members adds substantial extra expenses! Crew salaries start at around $3K /mth for junior members and $10K for captains and experienced crew members.

This size is great for longer travels beyond day trips and adds more and more space for extra amenities. Hosting guests becomes easier.

Here are some examples:

Our Pick: Hatteras M60

60 foot super yacht

The average base price for this model is around $2,995,000.

The Hatteras M60 is great for someone who wants the luxury of a larger yacht but still wants to be an owner-operator. The deck’s layout below and above is spacious, with a large salon and a full master suite. It can be customized to order with hardwood floors or specific carpeting and amenities like TVs, a bar, a full kitchen, etc. It is a motor yacht, meant for pleasure cruising.

It has twin diesel engines, 1135 hp each; cruising speed is 28 mph.

Yacht Price Examples for Two Other 60 Foot

  • 64-foot Schaefer 640; express cruiser; twin diesel engines, 625 hp each; cruising speed 25 mph Price: $1,299,000 for 2017
  • 60-foot Sunreef 62 Sailing Catamaran; twin diesel engines 110 hp each; cruising speed 10 mph Price: $990,000 for 2009

70 Foot Yacht Cost

We’re now looking at 3-bedroom yachts. Once you reach this size yacht, it is almost guaranteed you will need a crew to help operate it. A crewed yacht is very different from an owner-operated yacht.

This is just shy of the superyacht category, so if you settle on this size, know you are almost there!

As previously mentioned, as the yacht size gets larger, so do the number of factors that make the purchase more layered and complex.

When yachts reach this size, the interior layout begins to change more drastically. They often have a spacious main deck perfect for dining and entertaining guests, whereas below, the yacht would likely have four or more cabins and crew quarters.

With more rooms comes more cost and more opportunity to customize the space to make it your own.

Here are some great options for this size:

Our Pick: Hatteras GT70 Convertible Sportfish

60 foot super yacht

The 2017 GT70 model runs around $4,500,000, but keep in mind the extra costs of maintenance, furnishing, and a cabin crew to help it run. It’s great for a long vacation and far-away destinations.

The GT70 convertible sportfish is known for its speed and agility, and high propulsion power. It has twin diesel engines, 1900 hp each; cruising speed over 30 mph.

It is 70′ 6″ with 2,140-gallon fuel capacity. The inside is lavish, with a galley, a huge salon, and five staterooms.

Yacht Price Examples for Two Other 70 Foot

  • 75-foot Hatteras Motor Yacht; sport cruiser; twin diesel, 1800 hp each; cruising speed 28 mph. Price: $4,375,000 for 2017
  • 74-foot Ocean Alexander Motoryacht; twin diesel, 1150 hp each; cruising speed 24 mph. Price: $1,895,000 for 2011

100 Foot Yacht Costs (and up):

You are officially in the superyacht range.

These yachts come in all styles and shapes, allowing for cruising along coastlines or focusing on watercraft and speed boating.

Since this is likely the peak size boat for practical use, you can expect a lot of additional costs for hiring a crew, maintenance, docking, as well as stocking your boat full of amenities.

You’re likely to spend the bulk of your costs furnishing this size boat as bigger yachts typically are sold without furniture. The previous owner will want to hold on to designer furniture and other expensive interior.

Check out these great  examples of 100-foot yachts .

Our Pick: 143′ 04″ Virtus 44

60 foot super yacht

This model cost around $20,189,000.

This mega yacht is anyone’s dream.

It is home to a fully integrated beach club with room for a pool deck, floor-to-ceiling windows in the main salon, a hot tub on the top deck, five staterooms, an 8-person crew, and room to sleep ten guests.

It has room for water toys and other gadgets, with a layout that keeps them purposefully hidden from the outside world. It has a 12-knot cruising speed and 16-knot max speed,

Other 100+ Feet Yachts Price Examples

  • 98′ 5″ AB 100 Price: $8,843,260 for 2018
  • 161′ 04″ Acico Nassima Price: $17,933,000 for 2012

How Much is Yacht Insurance?

Insurance on a yacht is around 1% of the purchase price per year. It can go higher if you have lots of expensive designer furniture. This can add up over the years. It’s often cheaper to insure a sailing yacht but the price range is still within the 0.7-1.3%.

What Other Expenses Do Yacht Owners Face?

Harbor fees is another expense for yacht owners. It’s also a yearly fee that varies but as a rule of thumb, you can expect to pay around $100 per foot per year, depending on how popular the marina is. You will also have to be on a waitlist if you want a good location.

How Much Does a Luxury Yacht Cost?

A super yacht fall under the category of “luxury yachts” or “mega-yachts”.

The world’s largest private vessel belongs to the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s Azzam. It is 590 feet long and costs $600 million to build!

It is outliers like these that increase the price average for yacht owners, perhaps scaring potential owners when they start their research.

As a luxury yacht price guide, however, we need to look at averages.

Currently, the average superyacht costs $275 million. This does not even account for maintenance costs, either.

Superyachts are large and luxurious, needing a professional crew to help them run. They are designed to emphasize comfort, speed, and longer expeditions – depending on the yacht builders.

They might have:

  • swimming pools,
  • water toys,
  • diving and fishing poles,
  • fully furnished rooms,
  • helicopter landing pads,
  • and smaller support vessels

Just to name a few amenities. They are truly the epitome of the elite.

What Size Boat is Considered a Yacht?

The normal yacht length starts at around 23 feet, and can extend hundreds of feet.  If the boat meets 23 feet, it can be considered a yacht.

A boat does not need luxury features to be considered a yacht.

It can be minimal and stripped of the “extra” stuff to fall into the yacht category, so long as it meets the size and length criteria.

11 Things to Consider Before You Purchase

When making this purchase, the yacht size you buy needs to reflect what you hope to get out of the vessel.

Some important questions to ask yourself before you buy are:

  • What does your perfect day on the water look like?
  • How long will your average day on the water be?
  • Will it be more boating/watercraft focused or long cruise focused?
  • Will you use the yacht for fishing?
  • Will you be on the yacht every day of the week or just on weekends?
  • How many people do you hope to fit on the yacht?
  • Do you plan to stay on the yacht overnight?
  • Where will you dock the yacht?
  • How much boating experience do you have?
  • How fast do you want the yacht to go?
  • How important is it to have extra amenities like furnished rooms, water toys, electronics, etc.?

These questions will guide you to understand the size you really need and will be able to realistically maintain versus what your most ideal yacht would look like.

When Do You Need a Full-Time Crew?

At length over 50 or 60 feet, you may need a full-time captain or crew.

A full-time crew person will be needed to keep all the varnished woodwork looking good and all the little things maintained.

Sometimes, you must be honest with yourself about what you want and what you actually need. Be self-aware about your abilities (or lack thereof) in taking care of a specific size yacht.

If you don’t know much about boats and navigation, you will need more help to use your vessel.

Hopefully, this comprehensive guide gives you a good starting point as you begin your yacht price research process.

Important Things to Consider As Well

Although there are many factors to consider when understanding a yacht’s prices, it is an exciting purchase nonetheless and should be enjoyed as much as possible.

At the end of your research, you’ll be the owner of a beautiful yacht you can use for leisure, cruising, sports craft, fishing, or all of the above.

Although this article is a good starting point, we would also recommend getting in touch with a  yacht broker who can help you find your best fit , model, year, and the price is given your personal budget.

They are great sources of knowledge in addition to personal research.

Make sure you are as patient as possible in this process to make sure you are covering all your bases, but most importantly, enjoy the process!

Here’s How Much Yachts Cost on Average:

Yachts start around $300,000 for smaller 40-foot models and can go as high as several hundred million dollars for superyachts.

These are the main contributing factors to the price of a yacht:

  • The size of the yacht
  • The age of the yacht
  • The brand and  type of yacht

In general, the larger the yacht is, the more important the quality of the build becomes.

Also, potential owners need to understand the cruising speed and propulsion of different yachts.

The yacht type is also broken down into two categories:

  • Mediterranean Style Open style expresses yacht with maximum space for sun, little-to-no shade on the deck.
  • Hard-top express Semi-enclosed or fully-enclosed space on deck for the operator
  • Flybridge yachts

An express yacht is often referred to interchangeably as an  express cruiser  or  sports cruiser .

It has a single deck above the hull with a living space below.

They are much sleeker, too.

A flybridge yacht is often referred to as a sedan bridge or sport bridge, and it is typically used for fishing. It has additional space above the main deck.

Since the flybridge area has more space on the second deck, the main deck is normally made up of enclosed spaces and rooms.

It can have an open-air layout but can also have a hard-top.

Captain of Superyacht That Sank off Sicily Doesn't Respond to Prosecutors' Questions, Lawyer Says

ROME (AP) — The captain of a superyacht that sank during a storm off Sicily last week, killing seven people, decided not to respond to prosecutors’ questions on Tuesday, his lawyer said.

James Cutfield, a 51-year-old New Zealand national, is under investigation for possible manslaughter and culpable shipwreck charges and was questioned for the third time by the Termini Imerese prosecutors on Tuesday.

“He just exercised his right to remain silent, probably prosecutors were expecting that,” lawyer Aldo Mordiglia told The Associated Press, adding that the captain’s legal team has just been named and needs time to work on his defensive strategy.

Cutfield was among 15 survivors of the Aug. 19 sinking that killed British tech magnate Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah and five others.

Chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio, who’s heading the investigation, has said his team would consider each possible element of responsibility including those of the captain, the crew, individuals in charge of supervision and the yacht’s manufacturer.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged luxury yacht, went down near the Mediterranean island in southern Italy. Investigators are focusing on how a sailing vessel deemed “unsinkable” by its manufacturer, Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed.

Prosecutors said the event was “extremely rapid” and could have been a “downburst” — a localized, powerful wind that descends from a thunderstorm and spreads out rapidly upon hitting the ground.

The crew was saved, except for the chef, while six passengers were trapped in the hull.

ROME – The captain of a superyacht that sank during a storm off Sicily last week, killing seven people, decided not to respond to prosecutors’ questions Tuesday, his lawyer said.

James Cutfield, a 51-year-old New Zealand national, is under investigation for possible manslaughter and culpable shipwreck charges and was questioned for the third time by the Termini Imerese prosecutors Tuesday.

19 sinking that killed British tech magnate Mike Lynch , his daughter Hannah and five others.

The boat’s rapid sinking happened at about 4 a.m. local time on Monday, after a waterspout, or a small, localized tornado on the water, caused the vessel to heel over and eventually capsize, sending it about 165 feet to the bottom of the Mediterranean. Fifteen people were rescued by a nearby vessel. Authorities identified the body of Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan, who worked as the sailing yacht’s chef.

The celebratory trip aboard Bayesian took place shortly after Lynch was acquitted of fraud charges in the U.S. in a long-running legal battle against accusations that he had defrauded Hewlett-Packard after he sold Hewlett his company, Autonomy, for $11 billion.

Boat International has quoted a crew member as saying that the boat was struck by a freak weather event, which caused it to heel 20 degrees on its right side. It continued to heel until it began to take on water and sank in just 12 minutes. “We just didn’t see it coming,” Capt. James Calfield told Italian media.

A number of experts have speculated that water entering through the top via open hatches could have caused the sinking. Some witnesses have said that the mast snapped before the boat sank, but divers report the vessel is intact on the sea bottom.

Dario Boote, a ship structures and naval architecture professor at the University of Genoa, told paper that he expects a series of lawsuits to determine responsibility. “Clearly, only once the wreck is raised will we know more,” he told the

YACHT HORROR: How did billionaire's 'unsinkable' boat end up on sea bottom? Back to video

Billionaire tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch’s cage was gilded to be sure but a cage nonetheless.

And when he was cleared, Lynch took pals for a Mediterranean cruise on his super yacht, the Bayesian, which he was mulling selling. That will never happen.

On Monday morning, the Bayesian sank off the coast of Sicily killing Lynch, his daughter Hannah, 18, two couples and the yacht’s Canadian chef.

Now, investigators are trying to determine how — and why — the “unsinkable” 184-foot yacht sank 160 feet to the bottom of the sea. The yacht’s captain may be the only person who has the answers.

Here is the latest:

— Lynch’s daughter Hannah, 18, is still missing after five bodies were found in the wreck;

— His wife revealed she was awoken by a “tilt” as the yacht went down;

— Experts believe the yacht’s “tallest mast in the world” may have contributed to the tragedy after a freak “Black Swan” weather event;

— Frantic text messages from survivors who piled into a tiny raft revealed the chaos.

For two hours following the disaster, police questioned Kiwi captain James Cutfield, 51.

One major question is why the Bayesian sank so quickly.

“Every time a vessel sinks, there is never just one reason,” shipwreck researcher Bertrand Scibo told The UK Sun . “It could be that the keel was also inside or outside, because they can remove the keel [sic].”

He added: [There would be] no reason to remove the keel because they do that only when they go into harbour. Only the captain will be able to answer this special question.”

So far, five bodies — including Lynch’s — have been recovered with six being confirmed dead. There were 15 survivors.

Scibo was also concerned regarding the slow trickle of information and answers being released by officials. He said “all the information seems to be a bit secret.”

The CEO of the company that manufactured the yacht, Giovanni Costantino, claimed his boats are “unsinkable” and the “safest ever.” Instead, he told Italian TV that “human error” was to blame.

As the horror unfolded in Porticello Harbour on Monday morning, witnesses in a smaller boat claimed the mast was hammered by a waterspout causing the boat to capsize — and then vanish beneath the waves.

A British lawyer specializing in maritime law told the Daily Mail that officials will likely target the crew for answers.

“They will want to find out if the captain was at fault over anything,” lawyer Stephen Askins said. “If I was looking at this I’d be very interested in the weather report, what the captain was briefing the crew and what the captain was briefing the owner.”

He added: “It’s a case of looking at what happened and then asking yourself whether in all the circumstances what he did was reasonable.”

Shipwreck researcher Scibo said open windows and portholes could also be a recipe for disaster with the water flooding in “very quickly,” expediting the yacht’s demise.

“If you’ve got a combination of all these reasons, the keel, the mast, the portal, the windows and this very big tornado,” he said. “You find the reason of the sinking.”

The child of Irish immigrants, Lynch won a scholarship to a posh private school and then attended Cambridge.

Only two months ago he won a shocking landmark victory in the U.S. courts. Tech giant Hewlett Packard claimed Lynch artificially inflated the value of his software firm, Autonomy.

He had sold Autonomy to HP for a whopping $11.7 billion in 2011.

Prosecutors had accused Lynch, along with Autonomy’s finance executive Stephen Chamberlain — who died in a tragic car crash Saturday — padded Autonomy’s bottom line.

After being cleared, Lynch told The Times of London that he had feared dying in prison.

″If this had gone the wrong way, it would have been the end of my life as I have known it in any sense,” Lynch told the newspaper. “It’s bizarre, but now you have a second life — the question is, what do you want to do with it?”

Superyacht security on the high seas

Despite lower-than-average piracy incidents this year, the shipping and yachting industry continues to pressure all vessels to remain vigilant as violent attacks remain a concern. The International Chamber of Commerce International Maritime Bureau’s Piracy Reporting Center (IMB) detailed that sixty incidents of piracy and armed robbery against commercial ships were recorded in the first half of 2024, a decrease from 65 incidents for the same period in 2023.

ICC Secretary General John W.H. Denton AO says, “While we are reassured to see a fall in the number of overall reported acts of piracy, the concerning rise in incidents of a violent nature underscores the need for continued vigilance from the international community to ensure the safety of all seafarers — especially at this time of heightened uncertainty for maritime transport.”

Of the 60 incidents reported this year, 46 vessels were boarded, eight reported attempted attacks, four were hijacked, and two were fired upon. Perpetrators successfully boarded 85% of targeted vessels.

Luxury yacht rendering with protection system

Violence towards crew continues, with 85 taken hostage compared to 36 in the same period last year, with 11 kidnapped and two threatened. Guns and knives were reported in 34 of the 59 incidents, a worrying increase from the same period the previous year. While most reported pirate attacks are on commercial vessels, Yacht owners are advised to maintain strict anti-piracy watch and measures, especially at anchor.

Ransomware Gang Targets Google Chrome Users In Surprise New Threat Twist

New details emerge about why ‘the acolyte’ was cancelled, trump vs. harris 2024 polls: harris leads by 4 points in post-dnc survey.

The Caribbean Safety and Security Net (CSSN), notes the top destinations in 2024 for theft aboard a private boat are Grenada, St Martin, St Lucia, St Vincent, British Virgin Islands, and Antigua. In February, the catamaran Simplicity was found abandoned off a beach on the island of St. Vincent. According to reports , the bodies of the owners were likely thrown overboard after their yacht was hijacked.

I spoke with yacht owners about how they are spending millions setting up their large yachts with military-style technology while training their crews to avoid conflicts, as well as MARSS , the leading company providing security solutions. They provide protection for the maritime and yachting industry against airborne, surface, and subsurface threats. This includes enhancing surveillance capabilities with AI detection and verification, as well as connecting to onboard countermeasures and remote support.

The luxury French tourist Le Ponant yacht was seized by Somalian Pirates in 2009.

MARSS recently delivered its advanced security and surveillance system, NiDAR, to a very famous billionaire who added to their 400+ foot yacht and 200+ foot support vessel with a revolutionary $4 million state-of-the-art security installation.

According to Frederik Giepmans, MD of Safety and Security with MARSS, “Developments in AI are transforming security on superyachts by improving accuracy and efficiency and reducing operator burden. In the case of securing yachts, AI can be used to rapidly analyze data from sensors, such as radio-frequency detection, cameras, radars, and sonar, and present key relevant information as specific targets and threats.”

“What may appear as a few pixels in the distance on your screen can be identified as a bird or drone threat with the help of AI,” he adds. “AI can also help determine whether something is a threat based on parameters such as course, direction, and speed, and will alert operators only when there is a real threat and action is required. Systems like MARSS’ NiDAR have been using AI for years to learn, constantly improve, and help operators to work better, faster, safer.”

NiDAR CUAS Compact anti drone system

Additionally, MARSS says “With the rise of intelligent, evolving, and more sophisticated threats around the globe—particularly with the proliferation of drones—superyachts need to have the correct safety systems in place to protect those on board. Yacht owners want seamless, unobtrusive protection so they and their guests can get on with life, knowing any incoming threats can be detected.”

NiDAR is the primary protection system, and offers long-range, multi-layer, 360° perimeter security for superyachts, tenders, toys, guests, and crew. The product uses the latest sensor technology connected via MARSS' proprietary command and control touch user interface with data fusion and machine learning capabilities. In real-time, NiDAR monitors, identifies, and tracks manned and unmanned air, surface, and underwater objects. The system utilizes AI-powered software algorithms to automatically analyze and rank threats, alerting captains and crew to take appropriate action.

ClimberGuard technology

There are countless protection devices on the market, but the most popular include the following from MARSS:

NiDAR X-COMPACT , an air surveillance system designed for use on mobile platforms, including superyachts. The system is equipped with radars, an IR camera, and Radio Frequency Monitoring to provide 360° surveillance for protection against drones and unmanned vehicles. The NiDAR CUAS Compact system (NiDAR Core is the company’s software-based AI platform, while CUAS means counter unmanned aerial systems) can detect and thwart up to 1,000 drones. The customizable system uses artificial intelligence and sensors for drone detection and optional electronic countermeasures.

CLiMBERguard : This unique high-accuracy climber detection system is an automatic climber detection system for the instant detection, classification and alert of onboarding activities on the side of a vessel or maritime structure.

MOBtronic is MARSS's Man Overboard detection system. This has been designed for vessels with a minimum 18-foot freeboard, (typically cruise ships) as the inbuilt radar needs sufficient time to create a track and identify the thing going overboard as a person (as opposed to a deck chair, umbrella). MARSS is already working on a system for yachts which would assist vessels experiencing rough waters and inclement weather.

Feadship escape pod concept

Other protection additions for yacht owners include Long-Range Acoustic Devices (LRAD), which provide pain-inducing sound beams to invaders; Underwater Sonar Detection Systems, which detect movement below the surface; exterior lockdown systems, which provide total lockdown and are used on many yachts; and Safe Rooms, which act as fortified areas on a ship where the crew can take refuge in the event of a pirate attack.

Dutch superyacht builder Oceanco receives countless special security requests from clients as they fit their massive yachts. Among the requests are Citadel rooms, where owners can retreat to a hidden safe room to override access to the yacht's navigational and satellite communications systems. The rooms have ballistic-protected walls, an independent ventilation system, and water and food supplies.

IMB Piracy & Armed Robbery Map for August 2024 (yellow=attempted attack, orange=vessel boarded, ... [+] blue=vessel fired upon, red=hijacked, purple=suspicious activity)

Also requested are Emergency escape life pods that offer a rapid getaway, resist impact, and feature built-in GPS trackers, temperature and fire barrier controls, and air purification systems. Currently in development are Smart floors that track movement but can also be used to control lighting or heating.

There are certainly more lethal devices used aboard some superyachts. According to an eyewitness report in the Sunday Times, "The captain of a superyacht once deployed sonic weapons and 'pain rays' to fend off armed pirates in the Arabian Sea. The captain targeted ear-splitting, high-volume acoustics at the pirates using narrow beams of electromagnetic energy that trigger a burning sensation on the skin. The threat of pirate attacks is all too real. In some areas, such as along the coast of Africa in the Gulf of Aden, it's even expected. Any protective technology worth having will find its way aboard a yacht."

Superyacht captain investigated on suspicion of manslaughter after deadly sinking

ROME — A multiple manslaughter investigation has been launched into the captain of a superyacht that sank in a violent storm off Sicily , killing British tech magnate Mike Lynch and five other people, his lawyer has told NBC News.

James Cutfield is also being investigated on suspicion of causing a shipwreck, the lawyer, Giovanni Rizzuti, said in a telephone conversation on Monday. He added that Sicilian prosecutors will question Cutfield, 51, again Tuesday.

In a separate interview Tuesday, Rizzuti said that Cutfield was expected to be questioned by prosecutors at around 3 p.m. local time (9 a.m. ET) at the hotel where the captain, crew and survivors have been staying following the shipwreck.

Being placed under investigation in Italy does not imply guilt and does not mean formal charges will necessarily follow. Notices to people under investigation need to be sent out before authorities can carry out the autopsies on the bodies of the dead.

It is unclear whether other members of the crew of the $40 million Bayesian or any other people will also be put under investigation along with Cutfield, a New Zealand national.

After the luxury 180-foot vessel went down early last Monday, 15 of the 22 people onboard survived and were rescued from the waters off Porticello, a small fishing port off northern Sicily.

The body of Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan national who was the ship’s cook, was recovered shortly after the ship went down.

A massive search effort was then launched for Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, as well as Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International and the British insurance firm Hiscox, and his wife, Judy; and a well-known New York City defense attorney, Christopher Morvillo, and his wife, Neda.

All of their bodies were eventually pulled from the wreck.

The Bayesian was owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was one of the 15 people rescued after it capsized in what Italian officials called a “violent storm.”

Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered Bayesian could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast was the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.

Lynch, who was regularly described in U.K. media as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” was acquitted by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who took along those who appeared in his defense in U.S. court.

Announcing the opening of a manslaughter investigation at a news conference Saturday, prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said the sinking could have been caused by “behaviors that were not in order.”

Claudio Lavanga reported from Rome and Henry Austin from London.

Superyacht Captain Under Investigation Over Death of Billionaire Mike Lynch and Six Others

Italian prosecutors are investigating the captain of a luxury yacht that sank at almost lightning speed off the coast of Sicily “for manslaughter and shipwreck,” according to local reports confirmed by Reuters .

Autopsies are due to be soon carried out on the bodies of those who died in the disaster , including billionaire U.K. tech magnate Mike Lynch, who was only weeks earlier acquitted of fraud by a U.S. court over the $12 billion sale of his company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011. Among the other victims were his 18-year-old daughter Hannah , as well as Lynch’s lawyer and one of his team’s key witnesses during those proceedings.

A New Zealand national, 51-year-old James Cutfield had served as captain of the 184-foot superyacht Bayesian, which sank within just 60 seconds on Aug. 19 after being hit by a “tornadic waterspout” during a storm while moored about half a mile from the port of Palermo.

Under maritime law, Cutfield holds final responsibility for the well-being of all passengers and crew aboard the vessel. He has already been interrogated twice by police, and authorities have not yet indicated whether they plan to place any of the other eight surviving members of Cutfield’s crew under investigation.

Inside Story of Billionaire Whose Luck Ran Out on Superyacht

Though it was ultimately a sudden turn in the weather that saw the Bayesian swallowed by the waves, Ambrogio Cartosio, head of the local public prosecutor’s office, recently said it was “plausible” human error had also played a role in the boat’s sinking.

Local press has further quoted nautical architect Franco Romani, a member of the team who designed the yacht, saying there was a possibility the vessel took on water at great speed due to a side hatch having been left open.

Fifteen of a total of 22 people aboard the boat survived its sinking, including Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, and another woman, named as Charlotte Golunski , who saved her 1-year-old daughter’s life by holding the baby over her head above the waves.

In a bizarre twist to already tragic events , Lynch’s co-defendant during his recent trial, Stephen Chamberlain, also died in a U.K. hospital within just hours of the boat’s sinking, succumbing to injuries sustained in a car collision two days earlier.
